Mark Trapp
Call up @tivo to cancel: they tell me at that point I've been paying them more than what they charge other customers. Thanks, jerks. Cancel! [Edit: please read all my comments, as this has been amicably resolved.]
What, they couldn't tell me that when they changed the rates? How is finding out that they've been ripping me off an incentive to retention? - Mark Trapp
Got a call from Tivo a little while ago: "although we'd like to go back and credit you for all the years [yes, years] there's been this discrepancy, unfortunately we can't, but we'd like to win back your business any way we can" How about you give me my money back? You changed the rates for the plan, didn't tell me, and kept the money. That's stealing. I will never use Tivo again. Fuck that company. - Mark Trapp
And we're not talking about a couple of nickels here: they were overcharging me 70% every month and didn't say a thing, now they won't credit it back. - Mark Trapp
Blog the details & I'll forward it like kudzu or swine flu! That is awful! - Roney Smith
Oh boy. That's like what Sprint is doing to me. http://friendfeed.com/fabooma... - Anika
I'm sending this to the Consumerist. It's not even the monetary aspect, it's the principle of companies that think they can just charge whatever they want because your credit card on file. It's wrong, they know it, I know it, and that their solution is for me to remain as a customer without rectifying the fact that they stole from me is ludicrous and infuriating. - Mark Trapp
Talking to a retention person: rates were changed Late 2007/Early 2008: on hold for the exact date - Mark Trapp
They don't know exactly when, but they think it was about a year and a half to two years ago. The retention person I talked to said "well if you had found the lower price you should've called us and we would've honored that." That's unacceptable. You don't charge as much as you can get away with it and change it when someone calls you on it: that's borderline illegal and is plainly unethical. - Mark Trapp
Let me get this straight, you signed up for service and agreed to pay a certain amount and now you're upset because you didn't get an even better deal then you already got? Sorry, I don't see this as TiVo's fault but your own. You could have done better research on what you were paying or canceled if you weren't happy with the monthly cost. You could have also checked back to see if... more... - Davis Freeberg
I agree with Davis here . . . similarly, cell phone plan options change over time, often within the period of your contract, and you're typically going to have whatever plan you started with (with x minutes, y SMS msgs, etc) until you contact your carrier to change it. This means you'll often have an antiquated plan that isn't offered anymore, and sometimes you'd pay more by changing... more... - G. Sigh
Mark, I work for TiVo. Sorry to hear about your situation. If someone hasn't already responded, please DM me your contact info and I'll make sure that a senior account specialist takes a look at your case. Best regards, Stephen - Stephen Mack
How much were you paying? - Shevonne from fftogo
George and Davis: you're straw manning the issue. It wasn't a teaser rate. It wasn't a discount. It wasn't a deal. It was their standard rate, the rate they charge everyone. Two different Tivo representatives have stated that they were overcharging my account. The fact that they admitted to that, said they wouldn't do anything about it, and then used the fact that they'd charge me what... more... - Mark Trapp
It's my responsibility as a consumer to make sure I'm not being ripped off, but it's their responsibility as a company to make sure they aren't ripping off their customers, too. Now that I know I've been ripped off, it's also my responsibility as a consumer to call them on it. It'd be even worse to find out that I've been ripped off and say "oh okay." Companies that do shit like this... more... - Mark Trapp
In my example, the mobile phone carrier rates aren't "deals", "teasers", or "discounts" either for the record, so that's orthogonal to the issue here. I'll agree that the method of retention in your case was lousy. You're suggesting that the everyone else's bill /except yours/ was reduced at some point in the past when the "standard rates" changed. If that is indeed the case, then you have reason to escalate the case further. - G. Sigh
Mark, did you see my message above? - Stephen Mack
Hey Mark, Stephen's a good guy trying to make it right. Hopefully it helps. - Kevin Fox
Hey Stephen, I just sent you a DM. - Mark Trapp
DM received -- escalating to a senior account specialist now. Sorry again for the problem. - Stephen Mack
Thanks a lot, Stephen. Looking forward to a resolution. - Mark Trapp
As a gesture of goodwill while Stephen looks into the issue and we resolve it privately, I'm holding off from responding to George and Shevonne and locking this thread. I'll update and unlock after I hear back from Stephen and Tivo. - Mark Trapp
Just as an update to this, I spoke with someone from Tivo corporate office. After a heated back-and-forth, points of note were: 1) that the other representatives misspoke or there was some other miscommunication, and the change in price was a retention offer, not an official rate; 2) that they would offer me the same as what "Jeff" offered, which was that if I signed back up, they'd... more... - Mark Trapp
With all that said, I want to commend both Stephen Mack and Tivo in general for at least keeping tabs on their brand on FriendFeed and Twitter and following up repeatedly, even if an amicable resolution has not yet been achieved. - Mark Trapp
I'm also putting in a word with his superiors. And thanks Mark. Again, my apologies for this situation. - Stephen Mack
Thanks again Stephen, I appreciate it. - Mark Trapp
Got a call from Tivo: because of Stephen, they're going to credit me the difference for the past 18 months. Stephen, you're awesome, much appreciated! Despite the problem I had, I really want to commend Tivo for responding to issues like mine on Twitter and FriendFeed, and following up relentlessly until an amicable resolution has been reached. Tivo should be a case study in how to use social media correctly. - Mark Trapp
@marktrapp So this was resolved to your satisfaction? Because I am having several issues with @tivo in the same manner... AND I HAVE BEEN WITH THEM 8 YEARS!! and they are tell me after that long of a time I cant cancel without an early disconnect fee. - J.R. Escobedo
Yeah, they eventually did refund me the difference, and I eventually went back to them after Comcast's DVR sucked hard. The ETF is something I really don't like: Cable companies don't lock you in like that. In my case, I was able to cancel right then and there because I was on some legacy plan or something. I'm not sure how exactly that works, but I think it might roll over to... more... - Mark Trapp
I never heard of charging a fee because you've been a customer for so long, that's a new one. Usually it's the other way around. - Mark Trapp
J.R., can you please e-mail me (estephen@tivo.com) with your contact info? I'd like to investigate. Best, Stephen - Stephen Mack from iPhone

But I also know that this prize reflects the kind of world that those men and women, and all Americans, want to build -- a world that gives life to the promise of our founding documents. And I know that throughout history, the Nobel Peace Prize has not just been used to honor specific achievement; it's also been used as a means to give momentum to a set of causes. And that is why I will accept this award as a call to action -- a call for all nations to confront the common challenges of the 21st century. - Buddy press

If you're upset about a particular prize being awarded to someone, it's not useful to blame the person RECEIVING the prize. Why not instead cast your ire towards the group GIVING the prize?
yes. - Kamilah Gill
I think part of the contention is that Obama is so charismatic that he's duped otherwise reasonable people into thinking he's proto-deitic. - Mark Trapp
Because that's not as politically inflaming. - Cristo
In the immortal words of Homer Simpson, "Don't blame me. I voted for Kodos!" - Louis Gray
Ah, Mark, so it's "Damn you for being so charismatic! You hypnotized them!"? - Stephen Mack
I voted for Kang, but in all fairness, he said he'd only enslave the top 2% of Earthlings. - Mark Trapp
I for one outright reject our new Kang & Kodos overlords. - Stephen Mack
I think so Stephen, at least based on a regular reading of Michelle Malkin and WND: that the collective wool has been pulled over everyone's eyes. - Mark Trapp
He could have declined - Lindsey is Fierce!
Why should he have? - Kamilah Gill
I'm not sure what declining would've accomplished other than a Caesar-like declining-of-a-symbolic-title gesture. They don't re-award the Prize to someone else if the recipient declines, and it's still recorded that the recipient won the Prize (as in the case of Jean-Paul Sartre). - Mark Trapp
I don't know the etiquette and ramifications of declining but I bet it's not a good idea. - Stephen Mack
The point is, people think he didn't deserve it. Stephen's asking why are they blaming Obama. They can blame him as well as the committee if they feel he should have declined. If I had won an award I didn't feel I deserved, I would like to think I'd decline it. - Lindsey is Fierce!
The Peace Prize isn't just awarded for past accomplishments, but to acknowledge ongoing or in-process work. Obama being a Nobel Laureate has the potential to help both US and International interests moving forward, regardless of whether he deserved it based on past accomplishments. - Mark Trapp
Mandela received the peace prize BEFORE apartheid ended. - James Williams
Wait, we're talking about Obama? Sorry, I meant the Olympic Committee giving it to Rio instead of Chicago. I'm sick and tired of people blaming Rio. Even if Rio doesn't deserve it, it's not like they campaigned actively to be the location. - Stephen Mack
That's probably a bad analogy, Stephen. Rio did campaign actively, just like Chicago did. The president of Brazil made a personal appeal to the IOC, just like Obama did. - Mark Trapp
I know, it's terrible, but I just wanted to pull a switcheroo. - Stephen Mack
Stephen, well done. :) - Dario Gomez
A stray thought on the meaning of such prizes anyway: maybe the Nobel Peace Prize should be considered a consolation prize for losing the 2010 Olympics in Chicago.;) - Melanie Reed

Robert Scoble
My FitBit has arrived. Will it encourage me to get in shape? Or is it yet another intrusion into privacy? Let's discuss here:
http://www.fitbit.com This is a small device you carry with you. It keeps track of your activity during the day. The website asks you to keep track of other things like what you are eating. It shows you how you are doing every day. Oh, and you can share this too. I'm really wondering whether I should. On one side the peer pressure would help me get into exercising. On the other side I really don't want my lack of exercise to be part of the public discourse. :-) - Robert Scoble
awesome. Can't wait to see the six pack - Zee.
I can't wait to get mine...still waiting... - Mike Bracco
Zee is right, you probably look like Lou Ferrigno soon! - Bastian
The next piece of the puzzle would be to have something that auto-registers all the calories you eat and not have it be a manual process. I've used the Daily Burn and their iPhone app but it's still a rather manual process. While the fitbit is cool for seeing cals burned, you really need the other side of the equation of cals consumed to really see what's going on. - Mike Bracco
Bastian: that's not very probable. In High School I ran two hours every day and did four marathons and I didn't look anything like Lou Ferrigno, but I sure was in shape! - Robert Scoble
Robert FitBit is a good idea because it's when you loose track of your eating patterns & activity that you gain weight. Keeping fit is really a life long goal. It's not a "Oh I lost 25 pounds, I reached my goal weight and now I'm gonna quit working out". When you quit the weight sneaks up on you. "Just like a spider" :) - Jeunelle Foster
Without knowing the effects of our actions or habits - how do we really know what to change in our lifestyles? If used consistently, the Fitbit provides great Personal Metrics that can help you see what you could do to improve your lifestyle. The Fitbit really turns the process of staying (or getting) healthy into something that's measurable and interactive - seamlessly (and relatively effortlessly) blending the technology with lifestyle. - Sarah Doody
Mike; I'm a dailyburn user too, I'm just wondering how they could make it easier to track your food intake? The barcode scanning iphone was the best solution I could think of, any suggestions? - Steven Cains
Back to the original topic, I think peer pressure motivates us all. A long time ago I brought a rowing machine from Concept2 that let me upload my data (via USB) to the manufacturer's site to track my results. You could also share your results and become part of an online leaderboard. Certainly helped motivate me - Steven Cains
I think for personal use and ways to improve your health it's a great idea; however, controlling the data and where it does is a must. I blog about many such devices and there are insurance companies who offer discounts to employees who agree to participate in wellness program that review and get involved in the process, so make sure you know where your data goes and who gets to see it,... more... - Barbara Duck
Steven: Yeah I definitely agree that the barcode scanning is the best solution today. When I said making it easier I was really talking about big picture/way down the road tech that doesn't' exist today. It would have to be some sort of nano-bot in your body that sampled food and registered caloric information upon consumption. Obviously something that doesn't exist today :) - Mike Bracco
UCLA has a program/study where they are looking at participatory sensing with devices that report data, how do we work with them without disruption and stay within privacy laws, this is going to get real interesting as this area grows. http://ducknetweb.blogspot.com/2009... - Barbara Duck
Steve, I also used to log my rowing workouts with Concept2 - I agree, great motivation. That's element of competition - whether against self or others - certainly moves us to make changes in our habits. Another thing I've noticed - with all the location based tools (such as Foursquare) - this element of peer motivation is become more common. For example, if I get a notification that my... more... - Sarah Doody
Robert: as for you question about privacy, Google can already track every website you search for. To me, that is a lot more personal than how many calories I burned today or how long my run was. Obviously my health records are a different issue but the info that fitbit captures about you is not that sensitive or a big risk - IMHO. - Mike Bracco
I know some people will hate this idea but imagine how much more efficient health insurance could be if everyone was monitored in this way. You could easily see who has healthy habits and who doesn't and then charge those who don't' higher premiums. A large part of the healthcare issue is due to the fact that the system doesn't reward (or punish) people based on diet and exercise habits. - Mike Bracco
Just saw this post. Robert ( or anyone who just got one) did you just get it? I ordered 2 last winter and was wondering. Thanks - Tracy Benham
Mike, you should check out an article that Techcrunch wrote on a new company (not launched yet) called HealthyWage http://www.techcrunch.com/2009... - Sarah Doody
I want one as well, but there are not available in Canada... I hope it will help you get in shape, every little motivation helps! - Tyson Williams
I'm still waiting for mine to show up in the mail. I'll be happier if I can better track sleep and the other things which it instruments. - rob friedman

Hey, I was just playing with...I mean investigating one of these locks at Lowe's the other day. Was it hard to install? - CAJ, somewhere else
CAJ, it's not hard if the door is metrics are good to go. For the front door I had to file a wider hole for it to fit. For the back door (same model, just installed it yesterday) I would have been filing all day, so I had to drill to widen it (my kind neighbour had the needed 2" hole saw bit; 2" clearance is plenty, you don't quite need that much). - Micah Wittman
Cool. Thanks for the info! - CAJ, somewhere else
We're really happy with how this lock is designed. I would _not_ recommend the combination Weiser (http://www.amazon.com/Weiser-... - what you see on amazon is the model rev I had; but at least cosmetically they've update the product line this year; don't have any experience with those) which I had to replace for front and back door because they... more... - Micah Wittman

Tad, the biometric locks do seem sexy, but not so practical in cold climate locales. Removing a glove in -30, -40C temperatures - not so great I can tell you. :) - Micah Wittman

vegemite, it's like marmite but with more wrong ;) - alphaxion
we did eat the raspberries to help remove the vegemite taste. - Trish Haley
alphaxion, what's marmite? - Trish Haley
Heh... Trish, I had a friend who went to live in Australia for a while and came back with a wife and a small jar of vegemite. He spread a fingernail sized area of toast with it and bid me try. I did. It was astounding to feel my face muscles contort into a state that they had never before and have never since attained! - Jim Hearts FF
marmite is a yeast extract based spread from here in the UK (vegemite is an australian version of this)... their ad campaigns centre around "you either like it, or loathe it". - alphaxion
Johnny, I wonder what kind of noms you would want from here... is there anything you've always wanted to try? - Trish Haley
Dude, you used way too much - Darren Heydon
Haleys + Vegemite = You're doing it wrong! - Trish Haley
i put Vegemite right up there with durian fruit. or should i say down there? - Joe Silence is not dead
gross - Andrew Smith
Classic faces! Although Trish looks like she's in pain. - CAJ, somewhere else
thanks alphaxion... very educational. i still wonder WHY? @CAJ, I tried to chew it all and get it down, but had to spit it out in the sink, wash my mouth out, and eat various other things to get the taste out. - Trish Haley
an yeah, that's WAY TOO MUCH on there. - Joe Silence is not dead
Vegemite is awesome, we are lucky that we can buy it from Tescos here in the UK. As everyone has said though, you need butter (not margerine, but it will do) and spread it lightly. As for Marmite, that is some disgusting stuff right there! - Travis Koger from iPhone
I will try again later with butter and a SMALL amount, to do my friend Johnny's effort justice. - Josh Haley
ZOMG y'all have Tim Tams? You HAVE to have a Tim Tam Explosion then. There's no excuse not to. In fact, I'm going to have one when I get home (I have a supply in my freezer). - tinypants - Hagitha of FF
@travis.. actually, you can't buy margerine in the shops.. all of those butter type spreads are thr same (disgusting ;P ) - alphaxion
"Tim Tam Explosion" sounds a bit kinky. - Josh Haley
@amanda, too late. we devoured them. - Trish Haley
amanda herself is a bit kinky. - Trish Haley
oh, and so jealous that she has a supply of tim tams in her freezer. - Trish Haley
I'll send you some more Tim Tams, different flavours too... - Johnny Worthington
Trish and Josh, you need to get Johnny to talk to you about all of the different types of Tim Tams like the double coat ones or caramel. - Travis Koger from iPhone
johnny, i will send you another something lego for tim tams. what do you covet? - Trish Haley
Trish's face is hilarious. I was raised on Marmite and hated it the entire time. Ate as little as I could get away with. Vegemite is more awful than marmite. Poi isn't bad, just a bit bland to me. Still laughing at Trish's face. (Josh's is funny too.) Excellent capturing of the moment. - Stephen Mack
I'll check it out - Johnny Worthington
The face tells the story - johnpiercy
@Johnny, be sure to at least send them the caramel, the double coat, and the dark chocolate ones. *wets self* - tinypants - Hagitha of FF

Tinypants, double coat are my favourites, except that you get less in the packet! - Travis Koger from iPhone
Yeah... it's an acquired taste, I suppose... one that I apparently haven't acquired yet either... it wasn't for me either when I tried it. - Walt Ruppar
@Travis: It's a fair tradeoff, methinks. :D @Trish: One of my best friends is Australian, so he keeps me supplied with Tim Tams (I send him cash on PayPal, he sends me a box of Aussie treats). In fact, his first time visiting the US, he packed like ten packets of Tim Tams in his suitcase just for me. I almost passed out from joy. :D - tinypants - Hagitha of FF
vegemite is the worst export Australia has ever made - Rob Schonberger
nice arrangement, amanda! - Trish Haley
Tinypants, we do the same when we visit my sister in New Hampshire, but get them in the UK. - Travis Koger from iPhone

Thanks for giving me my morning laugh. It's not like Nutella! ;) - Bryce, Low in Sodium from iPod

Oh this made me laugh soooo hard! I love Vegemite, but if someone gave me a piece of toast with it spread that thickly on it I wouldn't go near it with a 100 foot pole! Thanks for the laugh! Now it's off to make some Vegemite toast for brekkie :D - Penny
So what you're saying is that it's the equivalent to drinking a bottle of soy sauce as oppose to sprinkling it on your rice? - Josh Haley

Trust me, they are. I had the camera ready and this is what we got. - Josh Haley
I just realised, I sent Brome some Vegemite the other week, it should get there soon. But I wrote a note explicitly saying to spread it thinly :) - Bryce, Low in Sodium
Spread thinly. Got it. If Josh tastes it again with butter and spread THINLY and says it's good, I may try again. But tomorrow. I still have some floating around in my system and can't stop the gag reflex thinking about eating it again. TWSS!! - Trish Haley

I also want to assure you that this isn't some huge prank we came up with to trick everyone else :) - Johnny Worthington
Vegemite, is Austrailia's trick on the world. That and that Koalas actually exist. #stopmakingstuffupsouthernhemisphere - SAM
Koalas? How about kangaroos and duck-billed platypuses (platypi?)? I'd say those are both at least as improbably as koalas! - Ladybug Heather
So true Sr Ladybug, more penal colony marketing drivel... (Ouch, don't actually know if the penal colony jokes are in bounds for Australians, don't want to get shanked.) Johnny, please ignore this last ignorant comment. I know not what I speak of. *whispers to the group - "but we know it's true" *wink** - SAM
*former* penal colony, thankyou very much. - Bryce, Low in Sodium
Penal............ *snickers* - Johnny Worthington
Gah! I love Vegemite, but that much on toast with no butter would destroy me. Think of Vegemite as spreadable salt. You don't have Vegemite on toast, you have hot, buttered toast with a meagre dash of Vegemite. - Edward Coffey
@Josh It's a foul spread, can't stand it myself. - Mo Kargas
Foul spread is a good description ;) - Kittyburgers from IM

Yes, it's an insult to the cracker. - Kittyburgers from IM
When our Aussie friends came to stay with us for a while, they had us all try it. My 2yr old at the time LOVED it on Ritz. I didn't mind it myself. MUST be put on very thin though. - tomit

I felt a lot of trepidation when I saw that Intuit is buying Mint, then I realized that's a bit hypocritical...

Heheh. - Mark Trapp
That's hilarious. - τorƍue
At least you caught yourself before you started wondering aloud how long it'll be before Intuit just shuts off the service and tries to move everybody over to a "new and improved" Quicken. - Ken Sheppardson
Now, if mint just open sources the list of bank account numbers ... oh, wait. - Micah Wittman
LOL @micah - Roberto Bonini
What we really need is a distributed personal finance management system. I should be able to own my own financial data and be able to run an application like Mint on my own system. Give control back to the user. - Ken Sheppardson
I have no faith in Intuit not to mess this up. Mint.com is everything their business model isn't. - Jonathan Terleski
terleski-doesn't that assumption make it a wise decision on the part of intuit? Filling in the gaps, so-to-speak? I'm hopeful. - Jenna Bilotta
I am hopeful but I don't like Intuit and have avoided their products since they went crazy with the DRM in turbo tax. - Lurking Grue
LOL, and LOL at Micah too. - Jim Hearts FF
Hehehehehe...this is the best thread ever. Thanks, Kevin, I needed a good joke. - Alex Scoble
I used Quicken's first billpay service years ago. The way it worked was paper bills were sent to Henderson, NV and scanned in. You managed the billpay from a website. After a couple years, they shut it down, and it took me months to sort out the bill paying. I'd be worried. - Cristo
I didn't trust Mint before (nor did I see the utility of it for my own purposes), I wouldn't go near it now. - LogEx
@jenna - Intuit has a history of consumer lock-in, strong arming financial institutions, and has an incredibly greedy business model. I hope that the acquisition is a sign of change, or a nod to them potentially exploring this new model, but I'm not holding my breath. I mean, I'd probably pay $60/year for Mint and certainly Intuit knows that. - Jonathan Terleski

Come one, come all! See THE AMAZING FRANKEN draw these, our UNITED STATES. TWO BITS is all you need, right this way, folks. No pushing, everyone will get a chance to see THE AMAZING FRANKEN and his wonderful PEN OF GEOPOLITICAL BOUNDARIES as he DRAWS, FREEHAND and FROM MEMORY the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. - Andy Bakun
The "at the Minnesota state fair" makes it look like a sideshow. And it is, since I doubt few other Senators could do this. - Andy Bakun
It's definitely a gimick. This was something practiced, but still very cool for all that. Folks from the great state of Maine might be disappointed in the shrinkage from Franken's hand though. - Kevin Fox

We have a print given to us (and taken) by our friend photographer Bill Hayward of Franken in front of one of these drawings of the US map that he painted. Here's the image: http://www.artcritical.com/badbeha... It's framed and hanging in our bedroom. I bet no other elected representative of ANY STATE could draw a sketch of the US that was any where near as good as Franken's. My bet stands for 30 days from today. - Jason Miller

Robert Scoble
My (at the time 14-year-old) son argued porn and censorship with a FCC Commissioner and people are up in arms that the President is talking with their kids? This country is just so idiotic sometimes. I guess they forgot what the last President was doing on 9/11. That is right, talking with school kids. Sigh.
Amen, Mr. Scoble, Amen. - Michael
It amazes at all of the lows people do to bring the President down. It's rather pathetic. - Minu Nianda
Heaven forbid anyone just step back and thinks people could be up to a couple good things, good grief. - Chris
Sadly, I think that (general) America has forgotten that every society before us has crumbled, be it from war, poverty, starvation, political dispute every society has fallen. It's just a ticker now as to when we follow suit. - Adam
Please. I have no problem with our President talking to our kids. As long as I'm in the room as well in order to call his BS. No matter who the President is at the time. - Chris Kalaboukis
completely different - bush was reading to students - not pitching his agenda. read the paper the dept of education sent to the schools. and you liberals forget the last time a president spoke to school kids was in 91 when Bush Sr talked about staying off of drugs - and you liberals screamed and yelled that it was inappropriate. now its ok. i love the liberal hypocrisy. - Tony Kanzia
Chris: you sir are an idiot. You can do that at home. - Robert Scoble from iPhone
Typical liberal - if you don't agree with them, then you're an idiot. What a shocking response. - Tony Kanzia
I took my son to see a Whitehouse and President I despised. - Robert Scoble from iPhone
Chris, you think teachers are any less fallible? Do you accompany your children to school and sit with them throughout the day to call BS on things a teacher might say as well? - Andru Edwards
This is all so ridiculous. If you don't agree with what he's saying, teach them to be proud of that opportunity, teach them to listen to their President, and then talk to them about the things you don't agree with when they get home. Don't conservatives believe in family values any more? - Jesse Stay
Tony: I live this stuff. Have you taken your son to see a President you didn't like? I have. - Robert Scoble from iPhone
Chris & Tony, thanks for being on hand to demonstrate the exact kind of intolerance that Robert is talking about. - Jeff Harbert
what i think got everyone up in arms was the curriuculm that went along w/ the president's speech. while this has since been taken down, people feel they are being told from the government what to teach their kids - Jonathan Jesse
E Pluribus Unum - "Out of one, many". Once the President is chosen, we all have to unite. We don't have to agree, but he is still the representative of this nation and we should respect, and be proud of that. - Jesse Stay
Tony how is Obama pitching his agenda to kids when he's simply telling them to stay in school? Give me a break. - Minu Nianda
or that bush sr. talked with school children as did reagan. i suppose it's only ok if repubs do it (shocker). - Kayce Maisel
I find it even more fantastic that parents don't think their kids can think for themselves. - Robert Scoble from iPhone
Teaching our kids not to respect the President takes away that unity. If we don't agree, we should instead be sharing what we don't agree with, not removing the opportunity altogether. This is ridiculous! (note that I was saying the same thing to things the liberals were doing to Bush as well) - Jesse Stay
Jesse Stay- You hit the "nail on the head" so beautifully! - earl wallace
Complete idiots are people who think that their kids hearing a few words from ANYBODY are going to hold sway over the impact of their parents, their environment and ability to think freely. - suecosby
@tony i agree with you on most of the comment. the problem with the speech i had was the accompaning lessons, since removed from the d ept of educations website - Jonathan Jesse
You know, I just read the speech, and I don't see ANY political agenda in it, much less a liberal one. "And that's what I want to focus on today: the responsibility each of you has for your education. I want to start with the responsibility you have to yourself." Sounds pretty conservative to me. Read it here: http://tpmlivewire.talkingpointsmemo.com/2009... - John Craft

Jesse: yeah. Gotta have a permission slip to learn. - Robert Scoble from iPhone
Let's see, how does it go? I pledge allegience to Robert Scoble...wait that's not it. - Sean Montgomery
Robert, you're absolutely right... but I can't help but wonder where the promises were from this administration on working across the aisle and having full transparency. I think this administration has provided the fanatical opposition with all the ammunition it needed to take situations like this and blow them up. Once again, I agree that all children should be able to hear the President speak without opposition. I just think this administration is blowing the PR front. - Douglas Karr
Robert I am giving you a fist bump for this man. Well said!!!!!!!! - Joe
@robert i think the heart of the problem is what you stated "Parents should teach values" and i don't think that is happening whether political, religious or moral and too many people are relying on the school system to do so. - Jonathan Jesse
Helen Sventitsky- I just read Obama's speech and I don't think I could have put it any better' I do not detect any undercurrents or subliminal manipulation. I heard the same advice when I graduated from high school. - earl wallace
"too many people are relying on the school system to do so." - and this is President Obama's fault how? Are you saying that, since the parents aren't doing their job of teaching values, no one should be allowed to talk to their kid about values? - John Craft
Robert - I'm a conservative but agree with your original point. POTUS should be able to speak to students. You have to acknowledge that if W. had tried to do the same thing (national satellite address) to students, liberals would've been just as outraged as many conservatives are now. - Paul Goldsmith
Paul: You're flat wrong. - Jeff Harbert
I think @Paul is correct, FWIW. - Kurt Starnes
Let's face it - there's a significant portion of this country's population that, if Obama gave a speech about puppies being cute, would launch into an apoplectic rage randomly spewing the words 'liberal' and 'socialist. - John Craft
Paul: you are wrong. Bush spoke to students and I don't remember anyone so angry. - Robert Scoble from iPhone
Yeah...who is he to define cute. - Sean Montgomery
John Craft: lol - Minu Nianda
Really? Bush gave a national address to school kids? I honestly did not know that. - Paul Goldsmith
@robert, Bush 41 spoke to students in '91 and there was opposition from the Dems. - Kurt Starnes
Kurt: I will take your word on that. That is stupid too. - Robert Scoble from iPhone
This is an amazing opportunity. Until now it simply wasn't possible for a single President to speak to an *entire* nation of school kids. Until now it was only possible to do it in person on a school-by-school basis. When I was growing up it was an extreme privilege to have the President visit your school. We should be embracing that! I don't care if you agree with Politics or not. - Jesse Stay
Kurt: so, where will we be in eight years? - Robert Scoble from iPhone
Kurt: will we have a better country where kids are encouraged to learn and think critically or are they going to learn that politics is like sports? - Robert Scoble from iPhone
Double fist bump Robert. - Joe
There was opposition from Dems in '91, but there was no ranting and raving that Bush Sr was going to indoctrinate school kids. - Rene Wirtz
@Robert Watched a great documentary on text books and our kids are NOT encouraged to learn and think critically. They are misguided. That's one of the key downfalls with our education system... which is controlled by people trying to indoctrinate their own beliefs and avoid criticism from any extremes. - Douglas Karr
It's funny I've been so inured by the idiocy, venom & deception coming from the White House for the past 8 years I have a hard time even grokking there are people who don't view the new guy as a massive breath of transparent, humanistic fresh air. And also that a US president talking to our kids could be a bad thing. Altho the guys in this thread who disagree may not be idiots, generously I would at least characterize them as "Fox-addled". - Thom Kennon
@Robert - I'm with you on those thoughts re kids learning to think critically. I may not agree with Obama on many things, but I would encourage my Daughter (almost 11 y.o.) to listen to any of his speeches. I do think there is some hypocrisy on this school speech issue, though. FWIW. - Kurt Starnes
Just for the record, I think it's awesome that the President has the opportunity for a national address to students. Great opportunity for the President and children alike. - Douglas Karr
1991: "The Department of Education should not be producing paid political advertising for the president, it should be helping us to produce smarter students," the New York Times quoted House Majority Leader Richard A. Gephardt (D-Mo.). "And the president should be doing more about education than saying, 'Lights, camera, action.'" Decent article on the history of these school speeches here: http://www.cbsnews.com/blogs... - Kurt Starnes
@Thom transparent? Like the close-door, one-sided bills that have been rammed through? Stop watching Fox OR MSNBC. Start reading http://factcheck.org/ - Douglas Karr
BTW, I wasn't following the Bush 41 school speech in '91, but would think the opposition to Obama is very likely much more heated than it was for Bush 41. - Kurt Starnes
Kurt: OK. So where will we be in eight years? Will your guy speak to school kids? - Robert Scoble from iPhone
@Robert - I don't have a guy or a party that represents me (See Jesse's sentiments). :-\ In an ideal world, Presidents would speak to kids apolitically and all parents would support such speeches. And I would ride off into the rainbow on my white unicorn. - Kurt Starnes
@Kurt @Robert Everyone should have the right to speak and be heard... what are we teaching our children through censorship of our very own President? Regardless of whether or not his speech is political, it should not be fought. He is OUR President and OUR childrens' President. PS: Robert... don't you mean in 3 1/2 years? ;) - Douglas Karr
I just had to laugh at the person who said Obama was transparent. Wow. Don't read much do you? Obama just made sure 8 months of Presidential White House visits will remain secret. How about those meetings with drug companies, huh? - Spencer
@Douglas - I generally agree with you. But, just as Obama has the right to give the speech, folks have the right not to listen, even though I think all should listen. Some conservatives seem to have missed the point that neither schools nor the WH require *mandatory* viewing! Folks still have a choice and this, to me, makes all of the protestations seem so silly. - Kurt Starnes
Scoble++ I wish I could fave this post. - Tanath
@Kurt we agree... and I also don't fall for the rainbows and unicorns. - Douglas Karr
In fairness, I think the ONLY real objections were over the slip that the president wanted children to tell him how they were going to help him. Most people don't like the idea of indoctrinating children. They didn't want their child coming home to harass them about why healthcare reform wouldn't pass, etc. This might be a paranoid nutter fear, but for all the political manipulation many parents are used to via their children. My children are constantly bringing home political notes about taxes, funding. - Jason Nunnelley
This whole debate is sorta silly. If you don't want your children indoctrinated, then listen what the man has to say then give them your opinion -- teach them the value of free speech which is to let all ideas out into the world and let the good ones stand. Taking your kid to the White House to se a President you hate? Makes perfect sense to me. - Dean Rodgers
Wait a second don't we spend years indoctrinating our kids on everything from how to eat properly to what sports team to follow? I guess it's just other people's indoctrination we don't want them exposed to? ;) - Eoghann Irving
Eoghann Irving, duh. :) - Jason Nunnelley
Eoghann, // I AM NOT COMPARING THE PRESIDENT TO THE KKK // But, how would you feel about your child attending a meeting where they taught that certain races were immoral, corrupt or otherwise less worthy. Sure, you could just explain that the bigot they listened to was wrong. But, children are impressionable. That's exactly why we work to brainwash... ahem, excuse me, train them young about things like pollution, recycling, civic responsibilities, etc. It's why schools have them to recite the pledge. - Jason Nunnelley
For the record, I'm looking forward to my children listening to the president. It will make for good dinner conversation. - Jason Nunnelley
My point is that sending someone to school and then complaining because they might be "indoctrinated" is a ludicrous position. Of course they will be indoctrinated. That's why we're sending them there! The objections to Obama's speech that I have seen are entirely party political and not motivated by any real concern for social or moral damage. - Eoghann Irving
Jason, FWIW I did attend a meeting that told me exactly that when I was about 11 at a local baptist church. There was a book and tape burning afterward. My mother was mortified when she came to pick me and my sister (9) up. Neither my sister nor I was 'impressionable' enough to take what we were told at face value, and we had a very lengthy conversation with my mom about what we thought... more... - FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
@Jason: you hit on something crucial. There's a lot of white folk (especially here in the South) that do not want the president to talk to school kids, because it may just empower black kids. - Rene Wirtz
Eoghann Irving, well sorry. I reserve the right to choose what indoctrination I subject my children to and I don't much care whether others think I'm backward or ignorant for reserving that right as a parent. I consider one's refusal to exercise that right cowardly. Even allowing my child to attend public school, and attend the Obama presentation is a decision that is mine to make. I won't whine or complain. I'll take physical action to stop people from doing anything to my child I don't like. - Jason Nunnelley
Tina, I can't defend the position taken by a minority of paranoid parents that their children shouldn't be exposed to the president's presentation. But, I do defend their right to be notified and that decision belongs to the parent. I think withholding your child's attendance is a poor decision. But, I think the suggestion that parents don't have the right to direct their children's education and experiences in childhood is unacceptable in a "free" society. I determine who trains my child, nobody else. - Jason Nunnelley
Jason Nunelley, I'm curious where you think I said that you didn't have the right to raise your children any way you see fit. Or that it was ignorant or backward to reserve that right. I don't think I made either statement. My point remains that this isn't about any real concern for the welfare of the children. It's a politically motivated stunt. - Eoghann Irving
Eoghann Irving, you said "sending someone to school and then complaining because they might be 'indoctrinated' is a ludicrous position." That statement indicated to me that you think taking action to limit said indoctrination is likewise ludicrous. The rest of my statement wasn't aimed at you personally or your comments but more the generic conversation. There are lots of people openly calling concerned parents racist and stupid for even suggesting that the curriculum shouldn't be political. - Jason Nunnelley
What I'm trying (and perhaps failing) to argue is for people to give the real reason they are pulling their children from school. It's not because they're "being indoctrinated" which is a vague phrase that has negative connotations which makes it hard to argue against. It's because of something specific. And the reason they're not giving a clear reason is that it isn't really about the... more... - Eoghann Irving
Rene Wirtz, this is a major disconnect between reality and perception. People who don't like Obama's tactics aren't all racists. They're not fearful that black children will see his example and obtain an education, get a better job, etc. They're fearful that Obama's policies will usher in big Orwellian government. I'm hopeful that Obama will inspire black students. But, I don't want his legislation to pass. I'm also southern, but that doesn't mean I'm a bigot. - Jason Nunnelley
jason totally onboard with your statement, though i know it will get me some less than lovely responses. i definitely do not want Obama's policies to to become embedded because I think they are the wrong ones, not because I want to see him personally fail. I think the best chance for the country to succeed is if his policies sputter - Zachary Adam Cohen
Eoghann Irving, I agree with you. The Republican "protect the children" spin is disgusting. But, I disagree with you on this idea that none of the parents are sincere. A significant number of parents don't like having their children used as pawns. I tire of it in my redneck, backwoods southern town (so you can all assume it's because I'm a racist :). My local school pulls this crap... more... - Jason Nunnelley
Though I consider the reaction these parents have to be bad. I respect a parent's right to opt out of a political stunt. Do I consider the firestorm the Republicans are fanning a political stunt? Of course. But, I don't automatically assume the parents are insincere, or racists. My kids are enjoying logical discussions on why some of the president's desires are noble and some are less so. - Jason Nunnelley
@Jason: I wasn't calling you a bigot, far from it. But I can see and hear from my relatives there is a deep seeded mistrust. And it is doubly so, because Obama is black and because he is a "socialist", two things that are not very popular amongst the mostly Republican voter base. I do want him to go a progressive course, but to call Obama's political course socialist is laughable at best. - Rene Wirtz
Rene Wirtz, I knew you weren't calling me a bigot. It's the southern comment I'm chastising. Since we're both in the south, I think we should be careful not to further feed this idea that southern people are bigots. It's just not true, at least no more so that Californians or New Yorkers. If J.C. Watts had run and won the presidency, these same relatives would love him. It's not a fear... more... - Jason Nunnelley
I think we need a "back to school" czar. - Spencer
I straight up asked my daughter what she wanted to do and her response was "I'd rather do something else". But how about this - I respect the president's right as president to address children in the public school system, why can't MY right to not have my 7 year old daughter listen to it regardless of message be respected? - Michael Koby
@Michael - Good point. - Kurt Starnes
@Scott - You think they're nutty, they think you're nutty. Ain't America grand? :-) - Kurt Starnes
a lot of political agenda is spun in schools. I can understand being wary. What your child does is well... up to you. I wouldn't be cool with my kid arguing porn at 14 years old with the FCC commissioner, but I am totally okay with you letting your kid do so. It is your choice. - Holden Page
on a sidenote, I would let my kid go (of course, it is the president!) and I would make sure when he/she (whatever my future has in store) get home we would sit down and discuss what was said in detail. - Holden Page

Oh man... Al Franken *dies a little inside* - Holden Page
does anybody think that, independent of what obama is going to talk about, it's not the president's job to address the nation's kids and this is not appropriate for thim to do in a free country? http://masstrovato.tumblr.com/post... - masstrovato
How do you get from people being upset with a lesson that insructs children to write an essay on how they can help spread the President's message to them being racist? - Robert Hafer from iPhone
Scott, (answering q1) Bill Ayers, though people may argue Obama didn't actually associate with him. Jeremiah Wright, though people will argue Obama attended church for twenty years and didn't fully understand the lessons Mr. Wright preached. Obama's nominee for Green Czar, Van Jones, though I realize people will claim that nominating someone to a cabinet position doesn't mean they agree politically. - Jason Nunnelley
Scott, I sincerely appreciated Mr. Wright's willingness to be honest about his message. While Obama tried to pretend he didn't understand that message, or that the preacher didn't mean what he said, Mr. Wright had the courage to say that Obama had no choice but to disassociate himself from that message but that he stood by his statements. I don't like Mr. Wright's message, but respect that he has the guts to say it and stand by it. - Jason Nunnelley
Scott (answering Q2) Originally, the president intended to ask students to participate in an exercise to describe how they would help the president. I view this as relatively innocent, but some do not. That has been changed in reaction to public response. Now, though I find it innocent, I don't like it. http://www.washingtontimes.com/news... - Jason Nunnelley
Scott, I don't have a problem with his present version. But, pretending people are reacting to the version out now and ignoring the history that brought this controversy to most people's attention ignores the true motivations. I'm just suggesting you should consider the reality that your link isn't the source of the controversy. - Jason Nunnelley
I think kids in all 57 states should have the opportunity to hear him speak if their parents don't object. - motownmutt
I had forgotten what Bush was doing that day. That is a great point. If I remember correctly, wasn't the book he was reading to the kids upside down? Or is that an urban myth? - Mike Kirkeberg
Agreed. Robert. Kids today are more evironmentally concious, know whats right and wrong and better perspectives of life, bring on anypne who wants to talk to them, there is no guarantee that they will listen as they are independent :) - Shashi Bellamkonda
The reaction to Obama's original plan is not in a vacuum. The movement to recruit children and young adults into new nationalist organizations concerns some people. It's not so much right-ring Republican types, but more the anti-government types. Pretending this is a flame alone in a desert isn't intellectually honest. http://www.youtube.com/watch... http://www.youtube.com/watch... << The rhetoric that spikes the concern. - Jason Nunnelley
Your son sounds like a genius. You sound like a liberal elitist. Sometimes liberals are so annoying. Sigh. - practicehacker
Thanks for the links, Jason. I knew some Norwegians who I believe served one year mandatory military service. I thought it served them well. - motownmutt
This administration is serious about engaging young people in quasi-military service. Its cabinet members talked about it openly during the campaign. You can pretend that didn't have an emotional impact, but that's just hiding your eyes to reality. That rhetoric set the stage for the sensitivity you see today over something as innocent as the president encouraging students, even to... more... - Jason Nunnelley

Jason Nunnelley, Seems that just further backs up my argument that this is a politically motivated and cultivated hysteria. Doesn't surprise me that it's been tried before. - Eoghann Irving
Eoghann Irving, I live in a bedroom community in rural Alabama. We're a 70% Republican community. I've not heard a single parent complain about the presentation - not one. The only thing I've heard is reports that the original message contained a curious question from the president to the students, and the president (being much better a man than his political activist supporters) removed it to avoid the conflict. There is no [widespread] fear about Obama's presentation to students. - Jason Nunnelley
Eoghann Irving, this idea that there's widespread panic over the president addressing students is akin to Sarah Palin claiming David Letterman joked about someone raping her daughter. It's a stunt. But, that's different from the hand full of people that have legitimate concerns about this administration's "statist" tendencies. And, I continue to encourage people to avoid dismissing... more... - Jason Nunnelley
citing Bush talking to school kids on 9/11 is not the best evidence that it's a good idea. Sigh - Michael Markman
Wow, @scobleizer fail on this one! http://www.washingtonexaminer.com/opinion... Democrats wigged out so bad, they even had an investigation of Bush's speech to a single classroom! I still think you're right - it's idiotic to get all up in arms. But looks like (as usual) both sides are just as guilty. - Douglas Karr

My childrens' school didn't run the speech today. I am so embarrassed. I completely missed this one. I'm back to my original reaction to the vitriol on both sides of this conversation. Politics is for suckers. - Jason Nunnelley
When I first heard that people were up in arms about the President speaking to school children... I thought maybe I had fallen into prolonged sleep and was not aware that Hitler was at the head of state again. Plz people. Can we get to what the REAL issue is at hand... and I don't like to play that card ... but sometime it's just too obvious when THE CARD is being played from the other side. - Jim Turner
What is at stake here is not the fact that the President wanted to speak to the kids--that is good. The issue was that it was framed as how we can help the President (hint, hint--his agenda)--and that my liberal friends is what the commotion is about. Obama is about the most disingenuous President I have seen in all my years of closely watching politics. He had the audacity to say that... more... - Sean O'Reilly

Bug list for Human Body 1.1 - http://www.zeigen.com/blog...
leonardo-da-vinci-bones
From the post: "Bug # 1114: Intermittent freezes during flight or flight processing. The other night, as I was putting my nearly-two-year-old daughter Sophie to bed in her crib, my wife and son came in to her room and I turned my back on Sophie. In that time, Sophie started climbing up over the rails of the crib. My wife made an inarticulate shriek, and I turned and froze in horror as Sophie continued to climb over the edge and tumbled head-first to the floor. Fortunately she landed safely on carpet, and was not injured. But my fight-or-flight routine totally failed me. I was paralyzed. This is a sub-optimal response. Fix please." - Stephen Mack
Please suggest your own bugs/RFEs for 1.1. We'll need a good PM and several talented bioengineers. - Stephen Mack
Bug: pain signal fails to turn off after notifying operator of problem. - Matt Mastracci
Bug marked as invalid. Resolution: user error. - Mark Trapp
Matt: Bug accepted as bug # 9388. Priority set to "High." For short-term workaround, please tell affected users to ingest a buffered analgesic in accordance to directions and limits provided by third-party supplier. - Stephen Mack
Mark: Re-opening. User has experienced this same freeze in several conditions and feels it's a design issue more than a training issue. Requests stack trace from debug logs. - Stephen Mack

The most glaring bug is the conjunction of a waste-disposal facility with procreation/pleasure centers. I mean, what's up with that? - Glen Campbell
Before we can answer that, you'll have to open a new ticket, Glen. - WorldofHiglet
Meat shells . . . I'm still laughing at that one. Just in case there was ever any doubt, this post proves that you're a nerd deep down at heart. - Davis Freeberg
In regards to the breathing tube, we might be able to solve this problem by creating a blow hole in the back of our necks like whales have. At the very least it would be a better place to exhale all of the hot air. - Davis Freeberg
Davis, your proposed fix is accepted. Please diagram with pseudo-code and then check-in to mainline branch at earliest convenience. - Stephen Mack
Glen: Having the stadium erected at a site colocated with the sewage plant is a design decision that we are unable to revisit at this time. - Stephen Mack
I tried to build a prototype, but every time I punch a hole in the back of the neck I'm getting a terminal error pop up. How are we supposed to fix these defects, if the entire system crashes whenever we make improvements? - Davis Freeberg
Ideally we could reboot the system. If not reboot, at least get some hot-backups so we can start up a spare if the first one crashes. - Matt Mastracci
None of these bugs are P1 bugs. None of them get in the way of the primary function, passing DNA on to the next generation. - Rich Thomas
It's true, some of these are P2 or lower, but it's all relative. As with all projects, you have to prioritize bugs and RFEs based on the goals and objectives of the project. Which would you place as top priority, Rich? What other bugs do you want to file? - Stephen Mack

DEBUNKED - The 3,000 mile oil change is a myth. | California Integrated Waste Management Board - http://3000milemyth.org/
"Needing to change your car’s oil at 3,000 miles is a myth. Many cars today can go longer without affecting engine wear. Automakers are regularly recommending oil changes at 5,000, 7,000 or even 10,000 miles based on driving conditions. Yet research conducted by the California Integrated Waste Management Board (CIWMB) shows that nearly three-quarters of Californian drivers change their motor oil more often than automaker recommendations. Following the 3,000 mile myth generates millions of gallons of waste oil every year which can pollute California’s natural resources." - Stephen Mack from Bookmarklet
They're fairly polite at the site, but basically the scam is that if you go to any of the well known oil change services (Jiffy Lube, etc.) they'll put a sticker saying to come back in for another change at 3k miles. Owner's manuals do recommend oil changes at 3k miles under certain conditions, but for most drivers, between 5k-12k is probably the recommendation for their driving conditions. - Stephen Mack
Why not use synthetic oil and change even less often? My car tells me when to change the oil based on how much fuel has run through the engine. My average interval between oil changes is 15-16K miles or once a year. - Jeff P. Henderson
Jeff, what do you drive? - Stephen Mack
A 99 BMW 528i with 180,000 miles on it. It is still running very strong. - Jeff P. Henderson

The recommended interval on my 2001 Audi S4 is 10,000 miles (using synthetic oil). - Ken Gidley

I don't understand it at all. I was driving in ATL last summer and traffic everywhere and all the highways have at least six lanes in each direction. In NY, we're lucky to have 3 lanes. - Bryan R. Adams
Looks more like Toronto during rush hour. - Zachary TG
@Anika: Yup, they've called it speghetti junction as long as I can remember. @Bryan: Atlanta's a case study in proving that adding more lanes (past 3 or 4) does approximately squat in terms of making traffic any better. @Daniel: Atlanta's not too bad if you stay in the city, preferably near the train. The suburbs blow (I grew up in one). Still too damned hot, though. - Joel Webber

I have to break down and go to the California DMV. Luckily, these days you can make an appointment. Unfortunately the next available appointment is September 21, so I wrote a little app to watch the waiting time without an appointment, which they publish live for each office.
Specifically, I want to know if there's any better strategy than "be there when they open". Looks like the answer is no, there isn't. The times just keep growing. Worst time to go: 2:30PM. Wait time at the Daly City office peaked at 1:56 yesterday at 2:30pm - Ken Sheppardson
Today they opened at 9AM and at 10:30 the wait is already 0:42 in San Francisco and 0:56 in Daly City. Sigh. - Ken Sheppardson
You need to open source and publish that bad boy. :) - Micah Wittman
I was thinking I'd just run it for a few days and publish some graphs. After I've been there, that is. :-) - Ken Sheppardson
The times when I had to go to the DMV in the L.A. area, I was always out in under an hour. - pea ♥ fierce as a woozle
It varies a lot between offices. For example the wait time in Daly City right now is up to 0:56, but in San Mateo it's only 0:26. I suppose if one were completely nuts one could do some sort of Google Maps mashup that factors in driving time to tell you where and when to go... - Ken Sheppardson
Yuck. :( We can't make appointments in WA state. I've been married for almost 2 years and my license is still in my maiden name because the wait is always so, so long. I've gone 4 times now to change my name and waited 2+ hours each time before giving up and leaving. I can't just sit in a stuffy waiting room all day when I have an infant. - Rochelle
And in hindsight, I've spent more time on this than it would've taken me to just go there and wait, but that's not the point now, is it? - Ken Sheppardson
I've always had pretty good luck in WA, but I'm usually going to offices in fairly low density areas (or, when it was still open, right into the DOL offices in Olympia, lazy-style.) MD, on the other hand, has to have a circle of Hades reserved solely to lease to DMV offices. - Jennifer Dittrich
i made my appointment for the Sept 2nd over a month ago :) Imagine if we didn't have the ability to make appointments online. - rob friedman
Just go to the SF office, get your ticket, and walk to Massawa for lunch. When you get back, you'll only have to wait a few minutes. I recommend the Sambusa and the Zigni. - Cristo
Showed up at 8:02 just as they were opening the doors to let the line in. Got a number at 8:15, called my number at 8:30, out at 8:40. Painless. - Ken Sheppardson

"Learn how Google Reader can help create a lifestream feed by merging multiple feeds into one. It’s easier than combining feeds in Yahoo Pipes." - Kol Tregaskes from Bookmarklet
This sounds very interesting. - Kol Tregaskes
I'll set this up later today. - Kol Tregaskes
I don't know if my thinking on this is right. I wanted to post my FF items to a Blogger blog in order to save them in case they "go away." I thought there was some way I could do this automatically, but I can't figure out how. Second, I set up a posterous and put that in the reader. That works fine and I put my new, so far empty blog in the reader. I guess I just need to know how to get stuff onto my blog from FriendFeed. Any ideas? - Kimber Scott
Shame I cannot use my user-friendly URL, e.g.: http://www.google.com/reader... instead it's http://www.google.com/reader... - Kol Tregaskes
One thing you cannot add to this is your GReader Shared Items. :-( - Kol Tregaskes
BTW, here's a long list of GReader users, why not add yourself here: http://ff.im/6mh5s - Kol Tregaskes
And then read these tips from Svartling here: http://ff.im/6mh5s (the main one being to add everyone to a group so they can see your shared items and are allowed to comment on them). - Kol Tregaskes
Done mine, see entry here: http://ff.im/6Ci0P - Kol Tregaskes
I've just added GReader Shared Items via a FF search. I couldn't think of a better way to do it. - Kol Tregaskes
Too bad this doesn't work with Google Reader for Mobiles : ( - Andrew Currie
I've created a lifestream bundle here: http://www.google.com/reader... - Kol Tregaskes
sounds like an easy way to create a "clipping" service for an intranet minus all the hassles and money - Glenn Batuyong
careful with that functionality: if you publish the link to such a tag/folder, and people go to that link's share page (the typical google reader share page) and choose "subscribe", they won't get 1 feed, they will get a new folder with all these feeds automatically subscribed. Not what I would have expected! - Joelle Nebbe (iphigenie)
Yep, you can see the feeds by clicking on the + button at the top. - Kol Tregaskes
Thanks, Chris. - Kol Tregaskes

I'd like to reiterate my call for Facebook to open source the Friendfeed codebase (as AOL did when it bought Netscape). A federated OpenFriendfeed is the best for users - and fits Facebook's move toward an open social platform. I'll pay to run a server. Would you?
