There were some bugs in the "Twitter publishing" code that caused some entries to get published on Twitter when they should not, and others to not get published when they should. I've cleaned up the code to eliminate these problems, but it's possible some settings were lost. Please verify your settings at http://friendfeed.com/setting...
Cheers for this Paul. How cool is it that one of the founders of FF still gets his hands dirty in the code. Once a coder, always a coder :-)
- Keith Bennett
from Nambu
Thanks Keith :) By the way, if none of your posts are making it through to twitter, it may be that you changed your password. To verify, simply click "Save changes" at http://friendfeed.com/setting... and we will check that your Twitter credentials are still good (and sign-out then back in to fix).
- Paul Buchheit
Matthew, in general all the same settings that the old ui had are available on the new one (plus a few more), though they are now divided on to several different pages. You should be able to reach all of the the settings by clicking on the word "settings" below your name in the top-right part of the page (the dialog shows a few, and links to all the others).
- Paul Buchheit
You can filter by service by searching for service:twitter (or whatever service you like), and of course that can be combined with other search operators as well. See http://friendfeed.com/search... for more.
- Paul Buchheit
Thanks Paul, sounds like you pulled an all nighter to fix these.
- Robert Scoble
Yeah, unfortunately the code had gotten rather involved since it was trying to support both the old ui and the new (the old ui worked on a per-service basis instead of letting you decide individually on each entry), and the logic sometimes became inconsistent. I simplified it quite a bit, so there should be less room for bugs now :)
- Paul Buchheit
Nice try, Matthew, I congratulate you on being awake, and carpe-diem'ing Paul here, but have to disappoint you - if FF wanted us to have favicons, they'd already issued us our favicons. Do you see any favicons that made the transition from earlier version. No? You think Paul nuked them by mistake... be my guest, and I'll be looking forward to the next couple of years' worth of your pleading for favicons when you could be learning to live both here and thereater without them.
- ianf ⌘
I'm a bit confused about the "Post my FriendFeed entries on Twitter by default" and "FriendFeed (when there's no Cc box)" options. Are these exclusive? Does checking the first one mean all my FriendFeed posts will get posted to Twitter even if I uncheck the Cc box?
- Tony Ruscoe
Paul, thank you thank thank you for the "Check CC Twitter box by default" option!!! That's one step closer to only needing Friendfeed. I'm almost ready to dump Google Reader AND Twitter now!
- caj needs a haircut
Tony, the "cc twitter by default" option sets whether then checkbox is checked or unchecked by default in the share box and bookmarklet. The other option ("when there's no cc box") applies mostly to the API and other off-site interfaces, such as email (mail share@friendfeed.com) and IM. For any given post, only one setting applies.
- Paul Buchheit
I publish to Twitter by default but now link directly to the source. I figure that those finding outside of FF want to go to the source (while those reading on FF are already seeing the discussion).
- Mike Reynolds
Hi Paul, about 15 mins ago I "shared" an item from FF here to "my feed" and "cc Twitter". But still not showing up on Twitter. Just thought I'd let you know.
- Brian
Thanks Brian. It turns out there was a bug in the "Share" feature that sometimes caused us to sometimes not send the tweets (the new code errors on the side of not sending tweets). It's fixed now though. Please let me know if you spot any others.
- Paul Buchheit
Paul, that did the trick! Thanks for looking into that. BTW, that was a quick fix! Just shared an item on FF and it pushed thru to Twitter instantly.
- Brian
Hello Paul, when I try to publish just my google talk status to twitter and have "Link to source site instead of FriendFeed conversation" selected, it doesn't send the tweet. I'm not sure if this is because twitter seems to be having difficulty right now or if it's the lack of a source link because it's a google talk status?
- ehaab
ehaab, publishing to Twitter was broken this morning, so no updates went out. It should work fine now however, including publishing updates from Google Talk. Sorry about that.
- Paul Buchheit
thanks! it was driving me batty trying to figure out why it wasn't taking.
- ehaab
I think it's still broken. I just posted via the Bookmarklet and CC'd twitter... no go. EDIT: my latest one just posted, must be intermittent.
- Daniel Sims
Hi Paul, Mine is still not working. I have also checked the setting page.

Anyone have the video somewhere other than Youtube? it's banned here in Turkey and I can't wait until we get home (next month) to watch it!!
- Chris Myles
Bret, this video should be titled: A Love Song for FriendFeed ! Great vid (and music) !
- Ahsan Ali
This is superb. I just showed it to my 5 year old son who enjoys Lego and has already taken some great photos, including one or two of his toys. So now he has the seed of the idea that, in time, he could take multiple stills and put them together to make moving pictures. Thank you very much for posting it and giving me and him that opportunity. Maybe, he might use FriendFeed one day too!
- John W Lewis
I think they need to make a full stop-motion version of the Matrix in legos. Now THAT would be awesome. I wonder what bullet-time looks like in LEGO?

i'd pay to see the stop animation lego matrix, but not the sequels

Petr, I have no idea what you mean, but thank you. :-)
- Kol Tregaskes
@Kol .. :] that, partially, might have been the purpose.... I don't know it exactly either. :] .. was I reflecting on a cat under the fax, and that it is hard to fax that way ... /?:] ... "underfaxing at its worst" ..

there ya have me ! :] .... see, to be honest with you, i saw this pic couple days ago, but i let it go, without posting it ..... what does that make me? :]

even a flat cat... faxes just can't handle the hair. You'd have to shave the cat first, else the hair will burn and stick to the drum... a mess! (I am extrapolating from transparencies, mind, i don't have access to a cat to test)

Hehe, Joelle. This is now tied for the 'likes' top stop. One more then, hehe. :-)

Hehe, Greg. Blimey! Erm, is that not far from 500 likes now? ;-)

I couldn't believe it when I logged on from the morning over posting it and saw it was at something 200 likes! You all have a strange fetish with cats and fax machines, hehe. ;-)

Well, I will grant that the sentiment of French Marshall Lyautey has some merit (he asked his gardener to plant a tree and when the gardener objected that the tree was slow growing and would not reach maturity for 100 years the Marshall was said to have replied, 'In that case, there is no time to lose; plant it this afternoon!').... So I am off to plant some trees....

I'm curious now - did google + make you come back to FF? Because that is v interesting.
- WoH: Minding her Steves
yes, we did the podcast when ff was acquired by the book of face.. watched them absorb the real-time elements and i check in from time to time usually through this post as it brings back very fond memories. google + reminds me of the early days of ff - haven't felt that way about any of the social nets that have come since the facedbooked swallow up. heaven knows we've been on them all and they seem so ancient now -- quora anyone? google got it right with +. think it marks the next era for them.
- michael sean wright
Google + right now does remind me of the FF glory days and I am curious to see what happens next.

"Babies can respond to emotions in a human voice at just three months old - earlier than previously thought - researchers believe. The results of scans on 21 sleeping babies suggested the brain responded to the type of sounds being played. Researchers said it had previously been unclear when human brains developed the ability to process voices and emotions."

I go to Cinemark theaters. No commercials except for the stuff they show while you are waiting for the show to begin. AMC can kiss my ass. I don't pay money to see commercials where previews should be.

Umm, didn't movies used to have intermissions about 50 years ago? And didn't they play advertisements (at least for refreshments) during those intermissions?
- Robert Felty
Yup, but those intermissions were a holdover of having to change reels midway through the film.
- Kevin Fox
Don't they still have to change reels midway through the film? I still catch cue marks (or as Tyler Durden called them, "cigarette burns") in the corner sometimes.
- Victor Ganata
Many of those are used as copyright watermarks now, Victor.
- Scoble, Alex Scoble
Apparently there are still some theaters that use the old two-projector setup, although I'm sure they'll disappear long before two generations from now.

one day these kids are going to say, 'dad used us as props for his gadgets!'...and then there will be blood! lol
- .LAG liked that
@.LAG, then I'll remind them how when we parked in what I thought was acceptable shade outside Babies R Us today, they both went nuts, and I had to extract them from their car seats and walk into the store (using the exit), with the pair held tight to my chest, to commiserate with their mother. I'm sure I was quite the sight. "Hey! Look at that guy! He's in over his head!" (fingers pointing)

Hey! Someone should say you - this is really unhealthy!! : (

If your FriendFeed to Twitter publishing isn't working, go to http://friendfeed.com/setting... and login again. Twitter disabled HTTP Basic Auth, so we can only publish your entries if you've gone through the new OAuth routine.
The real problem is Twitter to Friendfeed not Friendfeed to Twitter. Friendfeed doesn't import my Twitter entries. Friendfeed to Twitter now is working, thanks.
- catepol
Please fix Twitter to Friendfeed (with private Twitter account like mine Friendfeed doesn't work since Twitter decided to change OAuth settings)

No problems with FriendFeed to Twitter. Real problem is Twitter to FriendFeed. Trying to create a new Twitter service (or to refresh the old one) on FriendFeed, it says me the Twitter account was not found.

I did that x3, & still no FF to Twitter posts happened. FF to FB publishing has quit for me, too. So I have discontinued using FF to post anywhere for now & will give a new try another day down the road. (So the help tickets I submitted are irrelevant now.)

"The PasswordCard itself is printed in color, and has different symbols heading each column, and a different color for each row. You generate the card's random characters by typing a number into the field above the card and generating it anew. Store that number printout somewhere very safe—a fireproof safe in a deep closet, perhaps—and put the PasswordCard in your wallet. It might take some time to get used to "Note symbol, green" being how you remember where to find your iTunes password, or "Smiley face, purple" for Facebook, but it's a secure system, and even if your wallet is lost or stolen, it's useless to the thief without your number, or knowing your exact scheme."

Last week we noted that the California tax and regulate initiative had made the ballot, and reported on the Oregon Cannabis Tax Act initiative's ongoing effort to make the ballot. This week, we turn our attention to Washington state, where yet another marijuana legalization initiative campaign is underway. ... The campaign is finding support in some unusual places, Dawdy said. "The issue is really popular here, and one of our best hits was at a gun show. Libertarians and conservative Democrats go to those things. Gabe, there have been quite a few LEAP (Law Enforcement Against Prohibition) volunteers and speakers involved with Sensible Washington. Believe it or not there are cops against pot prohibition, many of them took that stance after busting harmless weed smokers for years. It's a fact that most harmful and life-damaging aspect of using marijuana isn't from the drug itself, it's from getting caught and put through the legal grinder.

I have to say that I like the new UI overall, it does stay true to the simplistic TiVo navigation which is very important. Flash concerns me a little but not too much. Like any techie, I just wish there was more changes but I'm hoping TiVo does well with the new S4 devices.

Perhaps I'm ignorant, but if someone really IS too fat to allow his seat neighbors to sit comfortably, isn't it only fair to everyone else that we enact these policies? I'm not saying Kevin Smith falls into this category, but if he did, I would have no qualms about making him buy a second seat. Honestly, being overweight is largely under YOUR control, people. If you choose to eat a certain way and not exercise, that's no one's fault but your own. Why should we be punished for your mistakes?
- Eric Geller
From the reports, he fit between the 2 armrest without over hang, and use the standard seatbelt, so he wasnt "Fat" by the Airline rules
- Fee501st
Ha3rvey, as I said before, I'm not necessarily saying that Kevin Smith should be considered "fat" by airline standards.
- Eric Geller
I'm saying that those who are rightfully classified as "fat" by airlines should pay the price.
- Eric Geller
Kevin may have been wronged here, and indeed it appears that he was, but that doesn't mean the airlines are being evil with policies of charging fat people more.
- Eric Geller
It really doesn't help that they're making seats narrower and putting them closer together back in the chickens and goats section, either.
- ɐ ɯıʞ sıɹɥɔ
Eric, the issue is that this was done after he was already seated and was kicked off the plane. If there was an issue with his weight, it should have been taken care of before he ever boarded. If someone is too fat to seat people comfortably or the allow the plane to fly properly, having the plane's captain come out and kick people off isn't the way to go.
- Rob H.
Rob: Totally agree. They went about it in all the wrong ways. But that doesn't change my point: their underlying regulations are sound and should be respected.

I never said that all policies of treating certain people differently are good. I have no clue what you're talking about in reference to the Air Force. But in this case, there's nothing wrong with the airlines' policies.
- Eric Geller
It's the implementation of the policies that is the problem.

Just heard a tease for this story on the 10pm edition of the local news here in SF (cbs5.com)
- Ken Sheppardson
yeah, if ABC's washington dc bureau had someone hounding kevin for an exclusive from the moment it blew up you'd think that it would be a second/third tier story this evening.... it is a sunday afterall
- Chris Heath
This is a good case study in how not to handle online PR in a post social-web world. If the Twitter account handler was a little sharper, she would have asked Kevin Smith what they could have done differently to accommodate passengers of all sizes. SouthWest could have used this negative attention to make the Kevin Smith debacle a public relations win. This was a missed opportunity for...

from BuddyFeed
Mark, see the problem is that they already know how to make the experience better... more legroom more shoulder and hip room... but of course they're not going to do any of that... all they're going to do is try to mitigate the damage since it's more cost effective to squeeze the cattle in like sardines and then deal with any negative PR that comes as a result of this 'sardine' policy
- Chris Heath
BTW, does Southwest have first class? If not, and I had Kevin Smith's money, you can be darn sure if I had to fly them I'd make sure the seat next to me was empty no matter how wide I might happen to be.
- Ken Sheppardson
Chris - I meant the human relationship aspect and how they treat their passengers. It's a budget airline. Nobody is expecting them create more leg, shoulder, and hip room. It's a customer service issue.
- Mark Davidson
changing their policy (like kevin's asking) is about the only thing they could do - the policy is what harms the human relationship aspect of the situation... it turns the southwest employees into the fat police
- Chris Heath
The latest from @ThatKevinSmith: "Hey @SouthwestAir: you bring that same row of seats to the DailyShow, and I'll sit in 'em for all to see on TV. If I don't fit, I'll donate $10k to charity of your choice. But when I do (& buckle the belt as well)? 1) You admit you lied. 2) Change your policy, or at least re-train your staff to be a lot more human & a lot less corporate when they pull a poor girl off the plane & shame her."
- Chris Heath
on the flight he did get onto eventually the girl in his row got pulled aside (he says pulled off the plane, but not ejected... just aside into the jetway) to be told that she should think about buying two tickets next time
- Chris Heath
Would it really hurt for him to lose a little weight?
- Fleagle
Two issues that crashed into each other. 1- Not everyone who is overweight can control their genetics or conditions that excaserbate it. 2- The pilot has to worry about EXODUS. In a survivable crash, can everyone get out quickly.. even thru escape windows in rows. This (to me) is a plane design problem that both sides are trying to work around.
- Dave Friedel
from fftogo
Dave, I firmly believe that the vast majority of overweight people can control their weight problem. I can't speak for what will happen to the minority. It would, however, be ridiculous to let the fat people who CAN control their weight continue to gain weight and think it's okay, just because instituting this policy would harm a minority.
- Eric Geller
The pilot had nothing to do with this besides being a bullshit reason they gave him to get him out of his seat and off the plane without a scene. He doesn't want to end up in jail, so taking it to twitter and fucking them back just as hard as he got it was an in-kind response if you ask me. Go do yourself a favor and listen to his side of the story in more than 140 characters http://smodcast.com/smodcas...
- Chris Heath
I'm glad Kevin's doing what he's doing. I'm still a fan of Southwest, but they stepped in it in this case, and they deserve to get their noses bloodied a bit. I hope they'll learn from this.
- ha3rvey (Hugs 50% off!)
Not everyone who is fat CAN control weight loss. For some you can diet all you want and work out like crazy and you still don't get an appreciable difference. To catagorise this and basically say all fat people could lose weight if they wanted to is just ignorant and stupid. It's atrocious the things airlines are allowed to do to people before they even board a plane. Why allow them to...

To quote my friend Rich, "BSG is the biggest disappointment of the 00s to me. It started off great, but could not keep it up." I'm setting my expectations LOW for Caprica, but secretly I hold out far too much hope.
- Stephen Mack
The pilot did almost nothing for me, so I'm interested in what happens in the next couple weeks in the episodes I haven't seen. I'm planning on checking those out.
- Joe "Looptid" Pierce
I thought the pilot was interesting if only in the way the holobands were handled. that was some great sci fi. The overarching plot leaves me kind of 'meh' at this point, but the production values are top notch.
- veo
Surprisingly good I thought. I really like how the secret of creating intelligence was related to the finale of BSG. The thought of waking up into a cylon body is horrifying. The spin on religion is also interesting. There's a lot of head room in which to grow.
- Todd Hoff
All this waiting after seeing the pilot only to find it's the same thing I've already seen, only censored. D'oh. Show has potential.
- Tanath
WorldofHiglet: Oh man, the Graystone house from Caprica is such a dream... I can only imagine how cool it would be to explore. What would you say the square footage is?
- veo
veo: I can only guess about the bits I saw.... maybe 10,000 sq feet (I'm not very good at estimating, so that could be way off)? It is fabulous, though! I was on the set, which is an exact recreation of the actual house they used for the pilot.
- WoH: Minding her Steves
Wait... are you telling me that the graystone house in Caprica is not a real house out in a real location? the water/islands out the windows are just a fake backdrop? I was totally convinced.
- veo
In the pilot it was a real house. The pics you see on my flickr are of the set and the backdrop they've done is AMAZING. And MASSIVE! I was right next to it and it seemed real. We'll have to wait until next week to see how well it stands up but I'm expecting it to be totally convincing.
- WoH: Minding her Steves
OH.. ok. I get it. A real house and a set house. My faith in my ability to see FX for what they are remains intact :D
- veo
So in the first new episode they didn't really show anything out the windows.. the only time you even saw them really was when they were being used as a giant display for home movies. Funny.
- veo
It's so sad. The level of engagement on Friendfeed seems to have shrunk to nothing. It's still a great aggregator, and has the best web interface of any microblog, but I'm afraid the critters have left the building. -sigh-
In some ways it's my greatest secret - still very useful regardless of engagement. It's definitely not an engagement tool though any more.
- Jesse Stay
Mo, there are a very small group of people that all engage together, but it's not like what it used to be. I get engagement from that group, but no one else any more.
- Jesse Stay
Sorry, Leo, but you're wrong. Plenty of activity in my feed.

It's also the easiest way to the Facebook team, where Bret is now in charge of Platform.

I'm following a set of users here that I would have never found on Twitter or elsewhere -- my feed is mind-blowing. Not tech-focused, tho
- Christopher Galtenberg
I noticed (was too busy to watch) the TWIT live conversation was almost non-existent, and felt sorry for both Friendfeed and TWIT.
- JCunwired
I've seen the opposite too. If anything, things are slowly getting better.
- Roberto Bonini
from iPhone
You understand that when I say "engagement" I don't mean the quality of the feed. That's unchanged. I mean the conversation around the posts. The number of comments. I get very few even for the live in-show conversations on TWiT. You guys are getting _more_ comments than before?
- Leo Laporte
There are a few cliques that are very active if you follow them but I'd tend to agree there isn't really a great deal of broader engagement like there was when I started using it a few months before the sell out
- Ed Millard
If you are a librarian or Turkish it seems to be the place to be :)
- Ed Millard
There is virtually no tech audience participating any more. There are a few, but much, much less than before. It's very sad.
- Jesse Stay
That's probably because you moved all your fans to IRC.
- David Schmidt
If Facebook would just enable a real-time comments mode you could do the same with a Facebook Page. I wish they'd enable that, then you'd have an engaged audience again on a popular and useful platform.
- Jesse Stay
I'm still seeing plenty of activity on my feed. What I have noticed though, is that the topics of discussion have moved from tech and political topics towards more social topics. (Except for the spike in iPad discussion last week.)
- Jeff P. Henderson
Anyone tried Redux, Scoble was pushing that as his big thing, at least until he declares it dead. Not sure if there is any conversation there. They do have a whole feed for cat pictures.
- Ed Millard
No we ALWAYS had a very active IRC room. That's unchanged. Last year at this time each TWiT would get many comments at http://friendfeed.com/twit-co.... The IRC conversation evaporates but FF lives on and is searchable. I far prefer it.
- Leo Laporte
Leo, have you tried a Facebook Page? It's not real-time, but lives on and is searchable.
- Jesse Stay
I still think think Facebook needs to use FF tech to have a firehose of public content.
- Jay
The FF conversations were altogether a different level of participants, as well. I learned as much from the comments as I did the shows. It really enhanced the experience.
- JCunwired
I have four Jesse! @Jeff - hmm. I guess it's all relative. I looked at your feed and there are only a few comments on your stuff. It used to be like this thread all the time.
- Leo Laporte
I've been making a point to come here and participate more. I love friendfeed.
- Mary-Lynn
@jcunwired, I had the opposite experience... that's maybe why I prefer how things have turned out, with posts increasing in quality and mindless comments decreasing overall
- Christopher Galtenberg
We considered using FF for the iPad launch - now I wish we had. The lack of mobile apps was one factor.
- Leo Laporte
I wanted to comment on Friendfeed, but I didn't see a thread for Home Theater Geeks.
- Vezquex
I blame myself. I started using Twitter more and FF less - but I'm going to make a concious effort to live here for a while. I start a FF conversation for all the shows I host - but the other shows don't. It's up to the host, not me.
- Leo Laporte
FF needs posters who understand the art of starting conversations. The core FF team is actually great at this.
- Christopher Galtenberg
Give me real-time comments on Facebook and maybe a little more aggregation (and public search), and I'm a full convert. Until then FF is the best thing we've got. Keep trying Leo - so long as Facebook isn't moving in that direction they've still got a monetizable (is that a word?) platform here.
- Jesse Stay
I still use it as my feed reeder on steriods. Two typos in this comment.
- Mark
Christopher, I was speaking specifically of the live conversations during TWIT broadcasts, comparing FF with TWIT's IRC participants.
- JCunwired
@Leo, I have never had very many comments on my posts, which for the most part are very techie. Compared to you I have very few followers. What I was referring to is the feed I see and the topics of the posts from people I follow. The more social oriented posts that I see and often participate in tend to get the most conversation.
- Jeff P. Henderson
I still vastly prefer FF to FB, but I have lots more engagement on Facebook. I wish it were over here.
- Heather Solos
Friendfeed activity is like the velocity of a car, and adding friends is the throttle. There will always be user churn, so when some of the people you usually hear from drift off, bring in a few new voices. There's tons of activity here, it just might not be the oldtimers anymore (yourself excluded, of course, Leo).
- Kevin Fox
I can only watch FF when I'm not trying to be productive. Way too distracting. Nothing has changed for that though. I'm watching it while eating lunch right now.
- MarkCarras
Kevin, I've noticed we've lost a lot of the techies though. I don't see near as much Tech conversation as I used to, which is one of the things that made it interesting for me.
- Jesse Stay
I have noticed the opposite as have a number of others here but then I engage on a number of topics. What I notice on all Social media is that when lists become a part of each, the engagement goes down. When privacy features expand, the engagement goes down. When Tech A-listers get bored...... ;)
- Melanie Reed
It dropped to nearly nothing toward the end of last year, but nowadays I'm finding the activity varying
- LANjackal
I'd love to see Facebook either push it or integrate it more to get that mainstream tech audience back.
- Jesse Stay
One thing I've felt lacking on FF is stream-combination. If you post something, which has already been posted and has a conversation in progress, you should be able to decide between joining that stream or starting your own. I've seen several overlapping posts with 1, 2, 3 comments each, but they die at that point. If these people could only talk to each other... (The duplicate post finder right now only works within friend graphs -- maybe that could be expanded?)
- Christopher Galtenberg
I think people are still unsure if it's going to be improved in the future, so turnover ends up high. Facebook just hasn't made that clear. Sure, it may still be here, but what's the roadmap?
- Jesse Stay
But Jesse, all tech and no variety makes, .... :) Still, I don't think you are going to find anything that the majority of those in tech are going to stay with. They are always looking over the hill at the next "latest and greatest". They were not trying to find a "home"...just to be the first to try the couch out.
- Melanie Reed
Can we delete this thread before Scoble comes back and says "I told you so"?
- JCunwired
Melanie, I think Scoble and others would have stayed if they had confirmation from Facebook it was going to continue to see improvements and/or further integration with Facebook. The roadmap is way too unclear. People like a vision on what to expect. It's also why I haven't developed any apps for FriendFeed.
- Jesse Stay
I'd love to see FriendFeed used by developers in the way Wave is, for instance. It has the same productive use as Wave. Unclear roadmap means developers won't come though.
- Jesse Stay
And the fact that people don't want to sink their time and effort into a site that, at best, may never see any upgrades or, at worst, may disappear at any moment.
- Akiva
Jesse, yes. But that underplays what I am saying. Tech is that "medium is the message" thing in a nutshell. It doesn't want to create something and say: "This is good" and enjoy it. It keeps tinkering till its tinkered to death and then moves on. I would ask as a tech, that you "take your shoes off, stay around....y'all come back now. Here?" ;)
- Melanie Reed
I could not agree more. I was hoping Facebook would create an interface for adult conversations on Facebook like FF
- Alan Morris
Melanie, I'm sticking around - I think I made that clear. I'm just speculating why others aren't joining or sticking around. I've tried to convince other dev groups I work with to switch over to FriendFeed and the lack of vision or roadmap keeps them away and using platforms like Wave (which is very buggy and annoying to work with).
- Jesse Stay
I've been trying to keep FF API support in the feed reader I'm developing, its a nice API, but it is pretty hard to justify it with a small and shrinking audience. Working with it does make you appreciate how innovative it was and how great it could have been. Hopefully it will reappear at FB eventually but I have a hard time liking FB.
- Ed Millard
Ed, yeah - I'd like to know that though - there's absolutely no vision made clear. The API group has gone down to practically nothing.
- Jesse Stay
You mean the FF API group or the FB API group?
- Ed Millard
Jesse, yes! and I so appreciate that you do stay. But yes, Wave is the sick puppy tech that needs tinkering with. I think you may want a vision and roadmap, but I'm acknowledging that there are a number of techs who may say they want that, but its a cover for the urge to tinker and move on.
- Melanie Reed
I would love to see Friendfeed in my enterprise 2.0 strategy, both hosted and purchased. That's what bummed me out the most about FB takeover.
- JCunwired
As to vision and roadmap. I don't need one on FriendFeed. It's great. Don't fix it. You have arrived. Enjoy it!
- Melanie Reed
Melanie, I disagree though - those that want to tinker and move on are a very small minority. When you still see technologies such as IRC used actively by a very techie audience it's clear there is a much larger audience that could be here. If the technology's useful, they'll come, but there has to be certainty that technology still has potential.
- Jesse Stay
It occurs to me that Friendfeed *has* actually arrived. The fickle Ubernerds are now looking elsewhere for the next pretty and the users are enjoying using FF as it was meant to be used.
- WoH: Minding her Steves
I agree with Akiva: the idea that FF is running as kind of a headless horseman of a service, with no definitive future is what may be making some of the more veteran users from investing any more time into it than they already are...
- .LAG liked that
Gentleman, it doesn't have to be "evolving" for it to be "working". It *is*. LOL Glen. Good one!
- Melanie Reed
Glen, *any* post that mentions FriendFeed is dwindling (or you're quitting, or it's dead) gets a ton of comments. This post is the exception.
- Jesse Stay
Thanks Jesse! I used to think a lot of the engagement was dropping because many of the technology bright lights left the service, but this year I opened a season-long thread for commenting on NFL games, and even there, besides a few regulars who I usually interact with over sports, it didn't seem the same, even though the thread racked up over 1,700 comments over the 20-week season and playoffs.
- .LAG liked that
Melanie, tell me how well its working without anyone at the helm the next time you get hit with a half-dozen 'Oops! There was a problem...' messages.
- Akiva
The problem with the Ubernerds moving on is it hurt the tech conversation which was some of the draw here. Its more social focused now. Nothing wrong with that but Facebook already has social out the wazoo. Where do go to hear interesting, free wheeling, tech conversation now is one of the big questions.
- Ed Millard
OTOH, i also suspect that there's more to do, and the competition is getting better... Facebook is better (and innovating constantly), Twitter is better... FourSquare, etc., every week it seems there's more things coming online to grab people's attention. Fragmentation of attention seems to happen in real-time too.
- .LAG liked that
Akiva, I probably get more of those using a d-up than you speedsters up there in the NW. ;) (Hope the new place is feeling more like home for you and Audrey and Rochelle) But frankly, it really doesn't bother me. In the scope of things I have to be fair and say it hasn't really been that annoying. I haven't used any tech that doesn't have its glitches every now and then.
- Melanie Reed
Now Ed has hit upon the "rub" as it stands: it really is about the water cooler.
- Melanie Reed
I think one of the reasons why your FF comments went down, Leo, is because your presence in the comments went down. People were wondering where all the love had gone, Leo.
- Garmon Estes
That may be true, Melanie. The issue here is that the service's quality has declined significantly over the past six months. Add that to the fact that you know that it's [most likely] not going to be upgraded... it begins to feel like a dead-end street. What it boils down to is that there's only one feature that FriendFeed has that is really keeping us here: the community. If we could all move en masse to Cliqset or wherever, most people wouldn't really think twice about it.
- Akiva
But what else do you need from it? As you say, the community keeps us here, but feature wise, its still the best aggregator and conversation tool out there, and would be useful with no followers.
- JCunwired
Akiva, I accept the possibility that it won't be upgraded and its doesn't fill me with sadness or dread. The vision of FF was Community. Has it achieved that? yes.
- Melanie Reed
Jeremy, that's subjective. I think FriendFeed's UI is horrible which I fix with a custom userstyle.
- Akiva
jcunwired, as I pointed out above, we're already here and invested. New people aren't going to be interested in blowing time in a site that has no future support and that may just up and disappear without warning one day.
- Akiva
Melanie, but even that community has fractured and decayed. Where's Bwana? Where's Cee Bee? We're losing people left and right in a trickle.
- Akiva
Akiva, what's horrible about it? I have a lovely winter scene with corresponding colors on my widgets. I'm content.
- Melanie Reed
As I wrote, it's subjective. I don't like Cliqset's UI either.
- Akiva
Akiva, I feel as the others: I seemed to have met more people not less recently. Indeed, I can hardly keep up with my feed sometimes and I feel some remorse that I cannot answer or comment to everything.....although, maybe some think this is a good thing. lol
- Melanie Reed
Now I will get to something touchy, so pardon me while I do. When the Ubertechs do get on here, they can at times be intimidating in their response to those wanting to break in or ignore them completely (I have seen that happen as well). So If to join or comment in an Ubertech thread means a lot of ritual rules where an infraction will be met with disdain, I can see where some might not want to comment as much. My apologies for being too forthright.
- Melanie Reed
And here comes CW who never really participates in a thread other than to piss on it.
- Akiva
I disagree CW. I think Leo is serious. He's right about the number of comments decreasing on his feeds. He's concerned.
- Garmon Estes
Melanie, you're dead on with your observation on the ubertechs. Sad to think you are participating when in fact they find you annoying.
- JCunwired
jcunwired, Is that *you* generally inclusive or of me in particular? ;)

Aaaaaaaaand this is where I come back in. Hi Leo! First off, in regards to the TWiT Conversations room, what from I recall, it never really had massive traction except for a few episodes (usually around hot button topics). Thanks, Micah! I was about 3/4 of the way down reading the comments when I jumped ahead to post so I'm sorry if I repeated waht was already said upthread. The thread keeps jumping around in my feed and I was afraid it would move again before I could finish reading.

Don't apologize - I couldn't provide linkage at the time. Onward and upward! :-)

I could post the show notes on our wiki, but I like the idea of making them public in real time so people can comment (which they do less and less). I'll continue to show my confidence in ff by posting show notes here in the TWiT-Conversations room, the stories we're planning to talk about in the TWiT, Macbreak Weekly, and TWiG rooms, and when there's an interesting conversation I'll...

I too, like you Leo, was looking for a Twitter replacement and even though FF is more of a aggregation, I really think its the platform that's _made_ for what Twitter is supposed to do, comment on someone's "life feed" and FF makes it that much more simpler. I always thought Pownce was ten times better than Twitter with all the sharing of multimedia, too bad that died. Twitter died for...

- Billy Warhol
there's a buttload more than 200 ppl on FF, Leo. :P
- Joe The Sausage
@Leo: maybe your engagement on FF is way down cos all the people who are sick of you and R. Scoble crowing about its demise are starting to block you? consider that.
- Joe The Sausage
I am new here and can't keep up with all the interaction I see and am experiencing!
- Paulette
alot of the ones going on about FF dying are almost never on here except to make declarations. they don't take part and then bitch about no one commenting on their posts. plz don't follow their example.
- Joe The Sausage
Joe, Leo hasn't given up on FF. He has *not* taken a slash and burn approach. He's asking hard questions, not attacking (in my view) and stating his committment to put more effort in.
- Micah
from iPhone
joe, Leo's not going on about FF dying... this is probably the first time he's mentioned it - and he has reason - his engagement has declined on friendfeed - it's a measurable value that can be quantified - he's not being a dick about it either so cut him some slack
- Chris Heath
okay, fair enough. sorry for my apparently knee-jerk response.
- Joe The Sausage
It seems obvious from the length of this thread that if you have a subject that people are interested in they will engage. But if your subject matter doesn't interest the audience well ... So either you change the subject matter or change the audience (that might mean going somewhere else).
- Brian Sullivan
Unlikely that Leo will change his subject matter Brian. And any meta discussion on a site about that site will likely trigger a bigger reaction than just about any other topic. (see digg numbers for articles about digg) -- Either way Leo's IRC chat probably has more to do with his declining engagement here than anything else
- Chris Heath
I wonder how much of this lack of engagement for Leo and others is due to Robert Scoble not being here. I suspect on his own with both his comments and his followers/posse he attracted many people to a thread and discussion and with him not participating this type of discussion has dropped off considerably.
- Brian Sullivan
I always show newbies Friendfeed as THE EXAMPLE of how tools can be utilized to filter the noise, surface relevant content (through both sharing AND advanced search), have great conversations and embed them back on your site/blog . What else could I show them that has the same functionality without a steep learning curve?
- Chris Myles
Better does not always mean it will be more popular. I post to twitter, but do it through friendfeed because the twitter interface really stinks. Perhaps it is marketing?
- Cris Fugate
maybe, but I see it more as a conflict between Leo's IRC chat room (which is fleeting) and the friendfeed discussions http://friendfeed.com/twit-co... (which are permanent) -- i view the IRC as the peanut gallery type of conversations that i usually pass on (at least during twit) and the friendfeed discussions as more serious
- Chris Heath
Definately Chris. I wonder if Leo needs to plug the FF room more.
- Roberto Bonini
from iPhone
Cris I agree and use FF or seesmic to post to twitter (does anyone use the web interface?). I think it might be a timing issue.. I really don't think main stream users (with a full inbox and overloaded schedule) *really* understand the power of sharing content and conversations YET. Throw them at twitter or facebook and they'll never see the value through the noise. Hopefully *crosses...

Roberto, he's plugged it plenty... the IRC is very sticky and hard to break away from with it's hundreds of users (peak 1000) -->> also I totally agree with Chris Myles about using "Friendfeed as THE EXAMPLE of how tools can be utilized to filter the noise, surface relevant content (through both sharing AND advanced search), have great conversations and embed them back on your site/blog." <<---- what a great way to put the key points that make friendfeed so great
- Chris Heath
I like FF for a lot of reasons. My company blocks IRC but does not block FriendFeed.
- Peter Costello
No decline for me, I've seen it go back up to nearly what it was before the Facebook takeover. I guess it's different for every user.

Chris (Heath).. The sad thing is I show them friendfeed but don't train them on it (at least initially). I use Google Reader and posterous as the two tools to get them started. I would love to create private groups for sharing/discussing content but I can't vouch for friendfeed's long term viability. It's a bummer really!!
- Chris Myles
Louis is probably working his way down from the top (of this thread).. he might be here in an hour or so :) Leo I think this would be an example of pretty good engagement.
- Chris Myles
I'm not gonna read everything that's already being said in this thread, but I have to say (after seeing the first comments) that it seems like several feeds are still alive, but as soon as you don't interact too much with those people behind it, you don't get any feedback from them. Friendfeed should have taken the world by storm instead of Twitter. It is a far superior platform. Mathew, I tend to agree. I get plenty of tech information from my RSS feed. The more social aspect of FF is what keeps me coming back every day.

Imagine if lots of topics had 1,000-2,000 comments/likes on popular articles. Yes very engaging post! I was drawn to it because I am guilty of abandoning my FF page as of late. My FF world is made up of amazing inspired artists who dazzle me with their posts, but because I am not a part of that community I have nothing to share of interest to them so there is no conversation, It is not surprising that Leo inspired this conversation ..he never disappoints & I just found out we share the same birthday so the Saggie gift of gab strikes again!

Hope FF picks back up. It seems to have many more dimensions than it's competitors and loads of potential.

Call up @tivo to cancel: they tell me at that point I've been paying them more than what they charge other customers. Thanks, jerks. Cancel! [Edit: please read all my comments, as this has been amicably resolved.]
What, they couldn't tell me that when they changed the rates? How is finding out that they've been ripping me off an incentive to retention?
- Mark Trapp
Got a call from Tivo a little while ago: "although we'd like to go back and credit you for all the years [yes, years] there's been this discrepancy, unfortunately we can't, but we'd like to win back your business any way we can" How about you give me my money back? You changed the rates for the plan, didn't tell me, and kept the money. That's stealing. I will never use Tivo again. Fuck that company.
- Mark Trapp
And we're not talking about a couple of nickels here: they were overcharging me 70% every month and didn't say a thing, now they won't credit it back.
- Mark Trapp
Blog the details & I'll forward it like kudzu or swine flu! That is awful!
- Roney Smith
I'm sending this to the Consumerist. It's not even the monetary aspect, it's the principle of companies that think they can just charge whatever they want because your credit card on file. It's wrong, they know it, I know it, and that their solution is for me to remain as a customer without rectifying the fact that they stole from me is ludicrous and infuriating.
- Mark Trapp
Talking to a retention person: rates were changed Late 2007/Early 2008: on hold for the exact date
- Mark Trapp
They don't know exactly when, but they think it was about a year and a half to two years ago. The retention person I talked to said "well if you had found the lower price you should've called us and we would've honored that." That's unacceptable. You don't charge as much as you can get away with it and change it when someone calls you on it: that's borderline illegal and is plainly unethical.
- Mark Trapp
I agree with Davis here . . . similarly, cell phone plan options change over time, often within the period of your contract, and you're typically going to have whatever plan you started with (with x minutes, y SMS msgs, etc) until you contact your carrier to change it. This means you'll often have an antiquated plan that isn't offered anymore, and sometimes you'd pay more by changing...

George and Davis: you're straw manning the issue. It wasn't a teaser rate. It wasn't a discount. It wasn't a deal. It was their standard rate, the rate they charge everyone. Two different Tivo representatives have stated that they were overcharging my account. The fact that they admitted to that, said they wouldn't do anything about it, and then used the fact that they'd charge me what...

It's my responsibility as a consumer to make sure I'm not being ripped off, but it's their responsibility as a company to make sure they aren't ripping off their customers, too. Now that I know I've been ripped off, it's also my responsibility as a consumer to call them on it. It'd be even worse to find out that I've been ripped off and say "oh okay." Companies that do shit like this...

- Mark Trapp
In my example, the mobile phone carrier rates aren't "deals", "teasers", or "discounts" either for the record, so that's orthogonal to the issue here. I'll agree that the method of retention in your case was lousy. You're suggesting that the everyone else's bill /except yours/ was reduced at some point in the past when the "standard rates" changed. If that is indeed the case, then you have reason to escalate the case further.
- George S.
Mark, did you see my message above?

Hey Mark, Stephen's a good guy trying to make it right. Hopefully it helps.

As a gesture of goodwill while Stephen looks into the issue and we resolve it privately, I'm holding off from responding to George and Shevonne and locking this thread. I'll update and unlock after I hear back from Stephen and Tivo.
- Mark Trapp
Just as an update to this, I spoke with someone from Tivo corporate office. After a heated back-and-forth, points of note were: 1) that the other representatives misspoke or there was some other miscommunication, and the change in price was a retention offer, not an official rate; 2) that they would offer me the same as what "Jeff" offered, which was that if I signed back up, they'd...

- Stephen Mack
Thanks again Stephen, I appreciate it.
- Mark Trapp
Got a call from Tivo: because of Stephen, they're going to credit me the difference for the past 18 months. Stephen, you're awesome, much appreciated! Despite the problem I had, I really want to commend Tivo for responding to issues like mine on Twitter and FriendFeed, and following up relentlessly until an amicable resolution has been reached. Tivo should be a case study in how to use social media correctly.
- Mark Trapp
@marktrapp So this was resolved to your satisfaction? Because I am having several issues with @tivo in the same manner... AND I HAVE BEEN WITH THEM 8 YEARS!! and they are tell me after that long of a time I cant cancel without an early disconnect fee.
- J.R. Escobedo
Yeah, they eventually did refund me the difference, and I eventually went back to them after Comcast's DVR sucked hard. The ETF is something I really don't like: Cable companies don't lock you in like that. In my case, I was able to cancel right then and there because I was on some legacy plan or something. I'm not sure how exactly that works, but I think it might roll over to...

But I also know that this prize reflects the kind of world that those men and women, and all Americans, want to build -- a world that gives life to the promise of our founding documents. And I know that throughout history, the Nobel Peace Prize has not just been used to honor specific achievement; it's also been used as a means to give momentum to a set of causes.
