Wasn't it the first gaming machine to use optical discs as it's main media?
- Mark Layton
i think that distinction goes to another, long-dead system. it was called 3DO and made by Panasonic. came out the year prior.
- Joe Silence is not dead
The first CD-based console is, Panasonic's 3DO in 1993, Then Sega Saturn and Commodore's Amiga CD-32 (Amiga500 based Commodore CDTV has basically boots from floppy disks , too)

- Cristo
I don't have either, but my brother has both, and he seems to always go with the PS3 version. I'll have to ask him why.
- Victor Ganata
The graphics on the PS3 will out-perform those on XBox only if the game has been optimised for the PS3 hardware – which is usually not the case when it's released on both platforms at once. Also, the XBox Live online community is larger than the Playstation's so for multiplayer games you might want it on XBox as well. I say all this as a Sony fanboy, but I'm realistic.
- kaigani
Depends on the game but most likely Xbox for Xbox live
- Rodfather
from Android
My PS3 can emulate an Xbox 360 anytime. I just press the Off button. :P
- Adrian Scicluna
Live older than PSN, it means more user, and friend invite to game. at live once you buy a game you can download it countless time, but at PSN it is limited. and also cross gaming chat,
- siniradam
Wait, isn't PSN free while XBox Live isn't? (In terms of online multiplayer gaming, specifically.)
- Victor Ganata
PS3 uses less energy to operate then the XBox, food for thought.
- Heather
Well, now I know why my brother prefers the PS3.
- Victor Ganata
Yep Xbox is expensive compared to the PS3 if you total up Xbox Live and any extras you need (like the wireless adapter that you get as standard with the PS3).
- Kol Tregaskes
I'll give some examples of games I would like on the Xbox that are also on the PS3: Batman: Arkham Asylum, Brutal Legend, Colin McRae: Dirt 2, FIFA 10, Ghostbusters, Needs for Speed: Shift, SIlent Hill: Homecoming, WET and Assassin's Creed 2. Which format would you buy these in?
- Kol Tregaskes
The only one I can comment on is Batman, which had additional content on the PS3, so I'd recommend getting that version.
- kaigani
@Heather The PS3 energy usage is higher than the Xbox 360s according to NDRC; I think it was the Wii you are thinking of that's lower.
- Wade Dorrell
Wade is that the PS3 or PS3 Slim which has better energy usage?
- Kol Tregaskes
@Kol That study (http://arstechnica.com/gaming...) compared a couple revisions of both consoles but didn't include the PS3 slim nor recent 360 revisions. So I don't know.
- Wade Dorrell
Ah OK, would be interesting which is better. I believe it's the PS3 Slim.
- Kol Tregaskes
Multiplayer games: Xbox. Anything else, usually the PS3. I'm still a fan of the PS style controllers, but online multiplayer is so much better on the Xbox. (And yes, totaled up, my Xbox was about $150 more expensive than my PS3, and it still doesn't do Blu-ray.)
- Jennifer Dittrich
Jennifer, I think that's a good shout about MP games.
- Kol Tregaskes
@Kol I'd bet latest rev of the 360 and the PS3 slim are about equal, based on a couple estimates for the slim & estimates for the Falcon rev 360. (1 rev before the current Jasper rev.) The internets don't seem to have done a conclusive test yet for some reason. If I had a Japser-rev Xbox 360 & a PS3 Slim (I have neither) I'd grab the Kill-A-Watt and get measuring. :)
- Wade Dorrell
Xbox for Live, Achievements and I also prefer the Xbox controls.
- Jemm
Anyone have experience with Xbox vs PS3 wireless controllers? Does one work better than the other for different room play. E.g. your game box is in a central closet, and you play the games from different rooms. Also, is it even possible to use a Wii from different rooms?
- Cristo
Chris, if you had to make a guess, Xbox controllers use RF and PS3 uses bluetooth. I'm not sure which reaches further or through certain objects better. Wii controllers also use bluetooth.
- Rodfather
Rodfather, I think the problem with the Wii is they have wired receivers they want mounted directly above or below your TV. Problems are 1) You wouldn't want to have to put that special purpose cable in the wall to different rooms. 2) You only have one plug into the Wii for the remote receiver, so you'd need a multi-plug to single plug adaptor, which seems unlikely to exist. 3) I'm not aware of any general purpose bluetooth repeaters/converters that could be used with the Wii receiver.
- Cristo
Since the Xbox controller is RF, it doesn't care about where you are, as long as you are within range. (About 30 feet is what I've read). Of course, this might change with Project Natal. I don't have any experience with PS3, so other than it using Bluetooth, I don't know if there are any other restrictions.
- Cristo
PS3, only 3% breakdown rate. Atleast you don't get the Ring of Deaths, I got tired of getting my 360 replaced until I got my loved PS3. Now I can play Modern Warfare without any pain.
- Faraz Mullick
The sensor bar can be hacked to be battery powered. All that's in there is a few IR LED's to help the Wii controller. You can even use a pair of candles to simulate the same effect of the sensor bar. As for #3, well, if it's too far, then you're screwed anyway.
- Rodfather
PS3. Xbox controller looks like too much work
-
Rodfather, interesting about the battery powered sensor bar.
- Cristo
Xbox. Prefer the controller, all else being equal.
- The Letter M
Any thoughts: http://ff.im/bQ1yL - I've read the Brutal Legend could be slightly better on the Xbox 360. I'd be more interested to know if there are big differences with these games, graphically and game-wise.
- Kol Tregaskes
If I had both, I'd buy it on PS3. The system is more powerful, graphics on some mutliplatform games are better. And the online content is free.
- Will Higgins™
Except Will, that when you actually go to play online you'll find a lot fewer peeps to play with on the PS3 vs 360. Microsoft's Xbox Live service is the bee's knees for online gaming.
- Alex Scoble
Heh, I know that there are far more people on Xbox Live than on PSN, but how many millions of people do you need to be online at the same time to enjoy a multiplayer game, though? Lack of players is certainly not something I've heard my brother complain about.
- Victor Ganata
according to rumors PSN going to paid service.
- siniradam
I doubt they'll switch requiring payment. Sony needs to offer PSN free to have any hope in trying to catch up to MS, which may never happen.
- Victor Ganata
For games made before 6 months ago? XBox only because of Live, for every single game going forward from that point? PS3. It's just many more times the box. Go to BestBuy and look at demos of MW2 on the 2 of them. XBox may as well be Atari2600 for all the rendering it can muster. Live is only so cool, at some point the sucking of the games has to be the deciding factor.
- Matthew DeVries
Playing a game by yourself isn't cool...Xbox 360 wins.
- Alex Scoble
If I want to play crappy games with other people, I can use the MSN Hearts Network. Good games > than getting to scream "PWN N00B UBER l33t HAX PR0N WTG FTW ROXORZ BOXORZ OMG HAX" over a headset
- Matthew DeVries
Enjoy your PS3 where you can play crappy games by yourself. I have rarely had a bad experience playing on line on the 360 and I have ZERO complaints about the graphics quality of the games either.
- Alex Scoble
I don't have a PS3, only long for one. Lame XBox regret is my name. I knew the PS3 had the longer productive life, but I let my friends convince me...... Lesson: Be your own man!
- Matthew DeVries
I usually get the PS3 version unless I know it's something my RL friends will be playing online. Like CoD or Halo.
- ronin
Matthew, they both have the same product life. The PS3 isn't sufficiently advanced to give it much more life vs the 360 and the 360's service offerings make it much more desirable from a consumer standpoint. The only reason why the PS3 is in the game at all is because of Microsoft's poor design choices that gave it the legendarily bad reliability.
- Alex Scoble
You provide specs of completely dissimilar processor units to prove a point? Guess what, not going to work. Never mind that the cell is notoriously difficult to work with, never mind that Microsoft has built some of the best development tools available for the 360, because both of those things aren't on your spec sheet. And never mind that game performance on games like Borderlands is...

- Alex Scoble
Oh and let's forget that Microsoft is constantly developing for the 360, while Sony can't even get a proper Netflix app built for the PS3. Yeah, let's forget all the facts and just give the victory to Sony, a company that can't even build a $3k TV that lasts 3 years.
- Alex Scoble
When the game is new, I don't see the problem with finding other people to play with on the PSN. MW2? No problem. The smaller population on PSN becomes a problem when you want to play something 6-12 months after it came out. So you have to decide whether that's worth $49.99/year to you.
- Victor Ganata
You want further proof of the dominance of the 360 community? http://raptr.com/ None of the top 10 most played games are PS3 versions. Microsoft built up a service that people love and refuse to leave even after 5, 6, 7 failures. The attach rate of the 360 is much higher than on the PS3. Developers know that they have eyeballs on the 360 and that's where they are putting the bulk of...

These are all about £25 each on the Xbox. WET and Silent Hill are £20 on the PS3 but Brutal Legend and Ghostbusters are £30 each on PS3.
- Kol Tregaskes
Both, determine which one looks best to you, and send me the rejects. Seriously though GB looks better on xbox360, Brutal Legend looked better and played better to me on the ps3, the others I don't know about though.
- Tsali, The Native of FF
from fftogo
"Both versions stack up really closely, but the Xbox 360 offers a more solid experience with less frame tearing throughout. This has to rank up there as one of the most fun Head2Heads we have captured in a long time. Brutal Legend is a great looking game that is fun to play and has many laugh out load (LOL!) moments. So if you are a fan of hack n’ slash, old school heavy metal, Jack Black, and comedy you owe it to yourself to pick this game up. Yeah-he-yeah!!!"

PS3's going to be Firmware upgradeable for future 3D Gaming. Wow. Would this then make you want to go out and buy a Sony 3D TV when they come out next year? Sure, you might need the funny glasses, but Wipeout HD in 3D.....Modern Warfare in 3D? Would be a strange feeling....
So let me get this straight. A game system that can't even keep up with 60 frames per second is going to be asked to now do 3D where it has to render each frame twice and Sony expects that to work ok? Good luck with that.
- Alex Scoble
Well Alex, they obviously know something that we dont. People dont even know how to get round their encryption for games. The PS3 is still a big secret to be honest.
- Giraffes Up In The AIr
Yeah, they know that marketing works even when the technology doesn't quite support it.
- Alex Scoble
Maybe you'll just need to buy one for each eye.
- Ken Sheppardson
Well Ken, you are right on that. I just remembered, even with Burnout Paradise you couldnt have 2 players on the same console. Sky have said their 3D service will run between SD and 1080p. So, maybe they are admitting it wont be quite full HD since the amount of data needed to broadcast such a signal would take up too much space...
- Giraffes Up In The AIr
Alex, where is your source that the PS3 can't run games at 60 fps? Call of Duty 4 from 2007 runs at 60 fps. I'm sure there are several other games. It's a matter of software developers taking the time to learn to code so the their code can fully utilize the hardware.
- Mark Layton
The PS3's 8 core CPU ( called, well, Core) is damned powerful. Even researchers use it ( protein folding etc.). 60 fps should be well within its capability. 3D even at 30 fps (assuming you can get the data to the PS3 in the first place, should be quite fine.
- Roberto Bonini
The problem since the PS3 came out is for the game developers need to learn a new programming language to produce a new game from the ground up for the PS3. Instead, they develop the game on the Xbox 360 which is easier to program (basically it's a PC) and then port that code to run on the PS3 and it looks and runs like shit on the PS3. EA is notorious for this.
- Mark Layton
Well, its something they'll soon have to learn. Get on it people!

"Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is the Citizen Kane of repeatedly shooting people in the face. The storyline makes less sense than a gas ladder, but in terms of technical achievement, this is an undoubted masterpiece. The visuals, the soundtrack, the level design, the game mechanics … they're all second to none, and they work together to create something that's not so much a videogame as a borderline nightmare experience. The phrase "an assault on the senses" doesn't come close: it's thrilling, immersive, sometimes scary, always exciting, and occasionally downright overwhelming."

Tomorrow, im going to Sainsburys to Pick up Call of Duty MW2 for the PS3. They are selling it for £26 ($43) How much of a bargain is that for a brand new game?! :)
Nice, I'll be grabbing a PC version at some point. As I have an impromptu day off I can start looking for the best prices for a few games I'm after. Just waiting for my money to come through from my last job.
- Kol Tregaskes
Yeah! Its gonna be awesome. Cant wait to go online with it at least, or get the girlfriend to do the multiplayer mission with me! :D
- Giraffes Up In The AIr
Cool. I got the first one cheap on STeam the other day, might try that later.
- Kol Tregaskes
I wandered around the shops in Horsham last Thursday and saw this in Argos for 50-60 quid! LOL. No chance.
- Kol Tregaskes
I think if you spend more than £30 on a game you are spending too much. Either shop around or wait for the price to drop (which can only be a few weeks).
- Kol Tregaskes
Defo, go play it! Its loads of fun! Its a bit crazy the RRP for this is £55. Sainsburys selling it for less than half. Mental. Just shows you the profit margin that GAME makes.
- Giraffes Up In The AIr
You can pick up classics like BioShock for under a tenner atm. Snapped that up as soon as I saw it. Really looking forward to the sequel. :-)
- Kol Tregaskes
Asda are selling it tomorrow for £32 as confirmed in the papers today. Tesco havent announced anything i dont think.
- Giraffes Up In The AIr
Actually at £26 they'll be making a little loss on the game, so it's a little puzzling but it's there call and I'm not complaining. :-)
- Kol Tregaskes
yeah! Sainsburys dont open til 8am though, so will be getting the lad from college, then driving round to it! I dont care if im late for University, ill never be able to get this game that cheap for a few years guaranteed! :)

I think most of the supermarkets are selling new top games cheap nowadays. I know ASDA is one who sells them dirty cheap.

While Sony has certainly delivered in that respect today by announcing a new smaller, cheaper Playstation 3 as well as an on-device movie store for Europe (bringing it into line with America) it’s missed a major trick by ignoring the power of social media."

A PSN API would be nice, but the Wii has even less online/social interactions and yet it outsells everything. I think Microsoft has more incentive to add these kind of features because they have to justify the $50 a year they charge for Live.
