My first rating and commenting of a PLoS article in my own field (Scary!) - http://stevekochscience.blogspot.com/2009... (via http://friendfeed.com/steveko...)
Well done, Steve. - Daniel Mietchen
Thanks, Daniel. - Steve Koch
Am I correct that there is no way to sign up to be notified about new comments on an article? I also can't find a link on my PLoS profile to take me to all of my prior comments. Am I missing something? - Steve Koch
Also: Do the authors of the article get email notification when their article is commented on? If not, then I suppose it would be courteous of me to drop them an email? Maybe I should do that anyway? Advice? - Steve Koch
They do, though it may not be immediate. E-mailing them directly is a nice gesture, though. - Bora Zivkovic
Thanks, Bora. I just sent an email to the corresponding author. Now that I've sent the email, it obviously seems like the right thing to do! It seems to me now that I should do this whenever I make a serious online comment or blog post. - Steve Koch
Usually as a matter of course, I email a corres. author when I leave a comment and for sure, they appreciate this. - Graham Steel
I think it also takes any sting out of criticism - "I liked your paper and made some comments, hope that is helpful..." - Cameron Neylon
Steve makes two very important points: sign up to be notified of comments, and a "commenter profile" showing all one's comments. I think both are essential to promoting commenting on articles. - Bill Hooker
