"And I'll tell you why. Most of the versions only concerned themselves with who Jesus and Judas are in the picture and the rest of the disciples are just matched for body positions. The figure to the left of Christ is meant to be John though it is often thought to be Mary Magdalene (due mostly to the Da Vinci Code), hence many of the versions have a female figure in that place. Maybe a few artists thought out who would be Thomas, but did they pick characters to be Matthew, Thaddeus, and Simon? I doubt it."
