and why would it shatter instead of splatter, bounce or other? Does this claim apply to new silly putty, or was the test done with old, brittle putty? And if you drop silly putty from that height onto the comics from the Sunday paper, will it still pull the image onto itself?

Morgan, I forget the technical term for this, but have you ever noticed that if you pull a piece of Silly Putty apart slowly it stretches and gets thin, whereas if you pull it apart quickly it (more or less) breaks without deforming to much? I think that's why the silly putty would shatter upon impact. Would like to see video, though.

Is it something like "non-Newtonian" ... ? I've seen a video of a big ball of the stuff, still new and squashy, dropped several storeys and it does indeed shatter.
