Let's say you're a geeky guy living in an area where there are few ISPs to choose from. Should he go with VPS hosting, or run his own server in his basement?
"The game's popularity has led to official merchandise from Valve including plush Companion Cubes, Internet memes including the phrase 'the cake is a lie', and fan creations such as recreations of the cake and replicas of the 'portal gun.'" -- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki...

Tells you what people are saying about that page on FriendFeed, I think.
- Rahsheen ™
Yes. this is the feedly mini toolbar. Gives you metadata from friendfeed, google reader, digg and allows you to share the content of the page on Google Reader, tweet it or gmail it. If you find it too intrusive, you can turn it off see preferences for more information http://www.feedly.com/home#pr... Please let me know if you have other questions

It depends on the context, but on a desktop - no, not "too large," about average I'd say.
- ianf ⌘
Oh, I was talking about for a webpage. On dialup, it would take at least sixteen seconds for the 90 kilobyte image to load. The image is probably far too large.
- Rishabh Mishra (p248)
Motivation comes from within. Usually things like a friend or family member dying young can serve as a "come to jesus" moment.

Track stats on everything, and compare the stats to global stats. Give achievements for specific things. So...make it a video game.

Rodfather: I actually attempted that with an eleven-year-old Compaq desktop. Nearly damaged the hardware--not as if the loss of the Compaq would be very big or anything.

Publicity. On the web, the more people you can get to say your product or service is popular, the more it will be. It's a self-fulfilling prophecy of a sort.

coz of its features and privacy and also coz of lack of innovation on the part of myspace. but at the end of the day, its about viral marketing.
- gtp19
i think people like it because there are a lot of people on it :) i know for my non tech family members being able to find old classmates and friends is a big plus. I think us geeks and those who use friendfeed have to realize there is a whole world out there that doesnt like the same things we do :)

Back when it was college only, we had to demand they open the service to our school. It became exclusive, other people wanted in, and it spread from there. Today it's the only "complete" social network in that you could replace your website with a Facebook page.
- Brandon Mendelson
Ah, all these explanations make sense. I just don't understand why any of the Facebook users put up with the user interface.

I think I screwed up my Android phone again. That's what I get for attempting to install all sorts of different Android spinoffs.
Yeah, DMKrow. I installed the SPL before the radio. That's what I get for not reading the instructions.

I guess they have figured out how to restore the G1 through JTAG http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthr... but I am sure it requires a fair amount of effort/equipment. Let us know if you resolve it in any way short of buying new.
- DMKrow
Wait, hold on. They figured it out? I thought the JTAG work was still under development.
- Rishabh Mishra (p248)
I can't seem to find more info than that post ------ "I can now confirm that we are fully able to jtag G1 and Diamond (read/write/erase) now. Also it seems that we can flash Diamond images without bigger problems into G1 *big thanks to dream_kill for helping me testing*, but cannot flash G1 into Diamond. The reason for it is simple : Diamond checks hardcoded crc for qcsbl in pbl,...

- DMKrow
Odd. I think I'll have to ask around in the Android IRC channel.

"Dreamlinux is a free, modern and modular GNU/Linux system. It can be run directly from a CD/DVD/USBStick and optionally be installed to a HDD, including IDE, SCSI, SATA, PATA and USB drives."

"Linux Live is a set of shell scripts which allows you to create your own Live Linux from an already installed Linux distribution. The Live system you create will be bootable from CD-ROM or a disk device, for example USB Flash Drive, USB Pen Drive, Camera connected to USB port, and so on. People use Linux Live scripts to boot Linux from iPod as well."

I'm thinking about creating my own distro, based on DreamLinux, that has a 2.6 kernel, X.org, busybox, and so forth. Anybody think it's a good idea?
- Rishabh Mishra (p248)
I tried running the official U3 Uninstaller in Linux/Wine; didn't detect the drive. I tried running it on an old Windows XP computer; detected the drive but refused to uninstall. Now going to try on a Windows Vista installation.
- Rishabh Mishra (p248)
Reporting live from Windows Vista. Vista didn't detect the U3 drive. Now going back to Linux to see if I can scrape together better luck there.
- Rishabh Mishra (p248)
U3 is completely evil; I cannot imagine what possessed Sandisk to think that it was a good idea. Even if you do have Windows, it's annoying, sluggish, and has been known to cause BSODs. Fortunately, the uninstaller did work OK for me. Dunno why it's not for you... *shrugs*
- i80and
U3 has a built in uninstaller...I can't remember the process, but in the options (once it's loaded) there is an option to remove/uninstall permanently.

Purely through the wonders of cheap plastic, the flash card inside one became emancipated from the case. And I still used it, just plugging the circuit board into computers. Yeah, neither interesting nor really something intentionally done, but there you have it.
- i80and
In theory, so long as it's not being used when it's getting wet, it should go through a soaking more or less OK so long as you give it a chance to dry out thoroughly afterwords. My old flash drives went through the washing machine fairly often before I fully developed a rigmarole for electronics care and pre-wash pocket-checking. I'd be more worried about short-circuiting or static shocks.
