Wow, more of my vendors get thrown together into the same company. Yay, less bills! So I guess the next version of JungleDisk won't require S3?
- Mark Trapp
Mark: the way they are talking, by the end of the year. I'll get an official answer after the event.
- Robert Scoble
The size, quality and resolution of the live video stream is amazing. The best I've ever seen. I even saw Scoble tapping away on his notebook :)
- Mark Krynsky
Mark: we're in the Austin CIty Limits studio. Good to hear the video is clear! :-)
- Robert Scoble
They just announced a partnership with Limelight Networks too.
- Robert Scoble
It's exciting, and Mosso is a leader in the cloud, but..erm...well...I think you'll see many guys who host websites with Mosso still 'iffy' about the reliability. Wonder if they are going to push some more resources into Mosso operations.
- Andrew Leyden
WOW. Thats huge. So RackSpace is going to need to create more data centers around the world to do this. It wasn't that long ago that they had a major power outage in their main facility knocking out many of my clients servers.
- Uncle CW™
i'm trying to see what differentiators are vs S3, dropbox, MS Live Mesh etc
- adolfo foronda
I wrote a post with coverage from an amazing Cloud vendor called Workhabit who specializes using Amazon EC2 to host Drupal sites. Info & some great presentations from them here http://krynsky.com/highlig...
- Mark Krynsky
Christopher: SliceHost was a very profitable company. The founders told me they came to Rackspace because of how many data centers they were building and the resources that were available to them.
- Robert Scoble
One of the benefits of Amazon is seamless integration. I wonder how all these distinct services can be brought together into one cloud with an API and fast and favorable bandwidth pricing?
- Todd Hoff
Robert: Thanks. One of the things that scares me about cloud vs. server is if my server crashes for some random reason, I can call a techie at the data center who can focus on repairing 'my server' as soon as possible. If the cloud crashes, then I'm sort of at the mercy of when they can deal with the 'bigger issue' which might take longer than fixing say one box. (I should note I use both mosso & ded. servers)
- Andrew Leyden
Just a random aside about Friendfeed. Look at all the comments here in just 25 minutes. Definitely a tech interested audience on this site.
- Andrew Leyden
Andrew I think we're going to see a move to multi-cloud operations so that instance of the cloud was really down you failover to another cloud. Some cloud vendors are positioning themselves as a redundancy option to Amazon.
- Todd Hoff
Ooh, the slicehost offering sounds interesting for personal hosting. I've heard some good things about them and intro packages starting at $20 a month? I need to look into them.
- Mark Krynsky
Does this mean they're going to fix Jungledisk on Windows? Around here, we call it Crashy McCrashalot.
- Brett Kelly
Mark: I've used them for a few months for personal hosting, and they are definitely worth a look. We just started using them professionally for our low-end sites a month or so ago.
- Mark Trapp
@adolfo you're listing services across different layers in their integration of the Cloud. This stuff can be confusing and we need more people to start doing a better job of explaining this stuff.
- Mark Krynsky
The Limelight thing sounds very interesting, a lower cost way to take advantage of CDN. I wonder what Akamai are thinking...
- Elizabeth McLaughlin
@mark krynsky good point, it's a nice suite of offerings via aquisitions and partners. Guess it never hurts to have competition, heres to price drops across the board.
- adolfo foronda
I don't know if I should "like" this or not. I've been a loyal Slicehost customer for 8 months now and I have been very happy with things the way they were. Still, congrats to those guys.
- Benjamin Golub
Retweeting @lalorek Rackspace paid $11.5 million payable in cash and stock, with potential for up to $16.5 million more for Jungle Disk & SliceHost
- Robert Scoble
I just bought a copy of Jungle Disk this week.
- Jason Shultz
from twhirl
Thanks for the info Mark Trapp. I've wanted to look into personal hosting in the Cloud, but prior to this it was ~$100 a month to do it and not cost effective but now at $20 it might be worth dipping my toe. I feel there will be a major shift and the majority of sites will be using the Cloud in ~5 years.
- Mark Krynsky
I guess I'm a minority here but my favorite feature of S3 is BitTorrent seeding/tracking. Any sign of that coming from RackSpace or other cloud providers?
- Louis Choquel
Louis: I asked them about that. It's definitely on their list of features they want to do, but they have other stuff to do first.
- Robert Scoble
Did you see that Amazon EC2 just announced Windows installs and an SLA? Probably trying to one-up these announcements.
- Dan T
I have waited for the spark to light the silicon valley rebuilding process, let the ideas flow, and I would like to work for Robert and Rackspace.
- Nicholas Chase
I would love that. Please reduce my bandwidth costs from EC2 and I'll switch. All this communication with the Twitter API and Social Graphs is getting really expensive!
- Jesse Stay
Learned at least one new tip here. Thanks!
- Jamie Dool
Yea, I did too. I didn't Know I could Force Quit a App
- charles cole
If you find an app crashing alot, open Safari and Force quit it. It's usually Safari hogging memory. You don't have to reboot the phone this way.
- Rob Haas
I didn't know that you can slide from from shift to the letter you want. Thanks Robert. I'll try that next time!
- Aaron Hood
It's quite easy to do it with a Blogger blog. You just have to have the image be the first thing in your post. Nothing else special is needed.
- April Russo (app103)
April, that's good news! I moved from Blogger a few weeks back and I don't believe that was the case at that time. Glad to hear it though.
- Daniel J. Pritchett
Thanks for the info Daniel. I tried this a while back and couldn't get it working as my feed wasn't generating the proper syntax. I will try it again as I think this is a great feature to add to our blog feeds.
- Mark Krynsky
I used Blogger with images for months and they didn't show up, I wonder why? I never really investigated into it until recently.
- Daniel J. Pritchett

***Here is the FF-enabled version of the MediaRSS plugin*** on Google Docs: http://docs.google.com/View... Cut and paste the text of that file and save it as "mrss.php". Upload that file into /wp-content/plugins/mrss/mrss.php and then activate the plugin from your WP control panel.
- Daniel J. Pritchett
Actually, I am not sure if that is what it is. I think you need to upload the images to Blogger rather than another server. The posts with images that are not showing a thumbnail on FF all have the images uploaded to my server rather than Blogger, or created with Live Writer instead of the Blogger post editor.
- April Russo (app103)
That might be it - I always used Flickr as my image host rather than Blogger.
- Daniel J. Pritchett
from IM
It would be nice if they offered it for all images uploaded to any Picasa Web album and not just the Blogger album. Live Writer creates it's own album when you post images because it can't upload to the Blogger album.
- April Russo (app103)
It would be *really* nice if an RSS manager like FeedBurner could automate this process for all of its users, thereby solving the problem across multiple blogging platforms.
- Daniel J. Pritchett
How exactly does it work with blogger entries??
- Amani
I see that Andy replied to you Daniel.. http://twitter.com/skeltoa... Oh, nm, mediaRSS in the WordPress addons repository has already been updated.
- Phil G
Clean, simple, the Google trademarks. (It's also looking a lot like Zoho)
- Gary Burge
I think I prefer the new look, seems cleaner.
- Robert Nelson
Needs a few Greasemonkey tweaks but overall it's better.
- richrecruiter
looks cleaner but less usable to quickly scan things, due to the far lower contrast (no more blue highlight and menu background). Everything blends together on my screen. Will get used to it, i guess. The typography does not look harmonious, they ought to tweak font sizes and spacing a bit.
- Joelle Nebbe (iphigenie)
too much white! I would have loved to see it go in a different direction.
- vijay
i got confused. i meant to like this one. looks cleaner for sure. i LOVE helvetireader script though. it kills
- Cee Bee
+1 for Helvetireader! Lots of space and clean to the max.
- vijay
I haven't seen the new gReader.. but you know what still looks gorgeous? Feedly. ;)
- Phil G
I don't like it yet. It feels sharp and poorly spaced. But I'll get used to it.
- Glen Turpin
I like it. If you were new to reader this would be an easier interface to use, IMO.
- Clay Newton
pretty much the only reason i use google reader instead of another web service is that it used to be fast (not anymore) and the social feed websites integrate with it.
- Joelle Nebbe (iphigenie)
It's too early to tell, Sarah. It does look -- *brighter*
- Jorge Escobar
I like it, just hope a redesign means that they bring in themes.
- Zach Chisholm
Any idea how to decollapse the navigation pane back again? I don't say a way to undo the evil that I did.
- Todd Hoff
I was expecting something drastic so I'm a little disappointed. Seems like more of the same with a little cleanup. Nothing offensive and certainly no major changes that make it bad.
- Kenton
I'm inclined to say that the new Google Reader is much superior to the old GR.
- Jamelle
Love the feature upgrades, style is a little stark for me.
- Kamath (नमः)
Disagree. I was so used to the previous version. But that's because I live there.
- Louis Gray
I actually didn't like it when I signed in after getting home. Perhaps I was far too used to the previous look? It's practically always open in another tab. But I'm getting used to it, and it's not too bad..
- deepikaur
I like it, but I want to hide the "Friends shared items" from the sidebar. That's the one feature I don't use.
- Larry Hudson
Like, but I also want to see which blogs you put in the B, C, and D-list, Sarah. :)
- Matt Cutts
Looks sweet, but appears to show less articles on the screen at once.
- Mike Reynolds
like the new google reader and i like sarah too
- Zee.
Haven't seen it yet, as I use Feedly.
- Grant Bierman
I like that I can now find the "Add Subscription" button without scouring the left-hand pane for 5 minutes
- Craig Eddy
Some things are better. Two things I don't like is that the font size in the feed panel on the left seems to have doubled, and sometimes keyboard shortcuts don't work.
- Tanath
liek it, but it looks weird with Helvetireader now - and that was soooo nice... well, hope for a Helvetireader and Better GReader greasemonkey updates now.
- Peter Efland
The script helps, but it has a downside too. When you mark an item as read with 'm' the highlighting goes away. Why can't anything be perfect? :P
- Tanath
loving most of it - especially the collapsing of stuff, but hoping for themes soon. having occasional problems with the keyboard shortcuts though :(
- siggimus

Thanks for shining the bright light of truth and justice, Allen! "First, let's begin with a number of disclosures. the words "open source" and "enterprise" don't quite mix :)
- Vincent van Wylick
Vincent, why not? IBM and countless others adopt open source principles http://www-03.ibm.com/opensou... - not to mention the leading web platforms all being open source?
- Matt Harwood
yeah, i tried it out - wasn't too impressed to be honest
- Zee.
I'm with Nate. It looks intriguing and I'd like to check it out, but am not going to sign up just to find out what it does.
- Jim Misses SP
Made my way to their blog. It looks pretty sweet! But I the SMS capability uses an international number. Definitely worth watching to see how they grow this, though. Here's the blog: http://www.contrast.ie/blog/

What's the objective of create personal twitter clones? Maybe intranet twitters for companies, right?
- Leandro Ardissone ⍨
@Pras, from my experience with it so far...the main benefit of Twingr over Yammer is the idea of multi-communities with one login. So almost like as if twitter had groups
- Zee.
Wow, I didn't know that Zee. I never like Killerstartups, because it's messy and RSS feeds are really messy too to read, it's almost impossible (I think). But that thing makes me more hate KSU...
- Kristian Salonen
"Online video site YouTube has been offering a "watch in higher quality" option since earlier this year. But higher quality doesn't mean high definition. It simply means that the videos are encoded in a higher bit rate and if you have a fast enough internet connection to keep up, the videos look a little better. But now it looks like YouTube is starting to add some honest to goodness high definition, 720p videos to the site. Members of the Video Help forums have spotted some videos available in HD, including the popular "Where the Hell is Matt" video."
- Kristian Salonen

the quality still sucks imo. vimeo is the way to go
- Cee Bee
Does it really matter? I don't care really so much...
- Kristian Salonen
That link is wrong. You need to watch it embedded with different parameters. Check it out here: http://blog.wired.com/busines... Looks much better. Edit: The link of this post links to the Wired article. Don't just watch it on Youtube's site.)
- Jared B. Luther
if it doesn't matter, why post this? thanks jared. the quality has definitely improved for sure, but it's still not as clear and detailes as what i've seen on other sites. i think users should expect more from these sites by now
- Cee Bee
A little off topic, but help me grow this meme: How many places have you visited personally in the Matt Harding dancing video? http://friendfeed.com/e...

"It seems to me that other smartphones trade principally on their keyboards as the advantage. They appeal to people who are really tied in to email, or perhaps text messaging of various forms. The iPhone, by contrast, trades on its web browser. That’s not to say the other capabilities aren’t excellent, but the web browser is what really makes the iPhone rock. "

It seems like the whole browse > search > download > install process is very streamlined. A simple process encourages experimentation - I've tried a lot of free apps I would not have if the process had been more cumbersome, as it was on my old WinMo phone.
- Jennifer Dittrich
I agree with Eldon. First: It can be a nightmare to find decent freeware apps for other phones (WM, Symbian). Second, some fucktard developers require you to download the applications onto a Windows PC first, instead of downloading it straight to the phone. Not so fun as a Mac or Linux user.
- Thomas Stromberg
True about the web browser... I call mine an internet device... I hardly use it as a phone... it's all about the browser and connectivity
- Aad 't Hart
Definitely true about WinMo distribution systems often requiring a PC. That's so annoying. I used to use Handango on my Apache (Sprint), but I had a Handango account long before I had that phone, and preferred to have my purchases associated with the years-old account.
- MiniMage TKDteacher of FF
I love the browser, the apps, the design...everything about the phone. There are times that I don't even have to take the laptop with me to business meetings. Never be able to do that with a Blackberry.
- Al Stevens
GitX is a git GUI specifically for Mac OS X. It currently features a history viewer much like gitk and a commit GUI like git gui. But then in silky smooth OS X style!
- Leandro Ardissone ⍨
Awesome! I love HDR photos. Nice site design too Justin.
- Mark Krynsky
Cool shot! Can you share some info about your "Lightroom HDR" technique?
- Brian Johns
Mark - Thanks! It's not really HDR per say.
- Justin Korn
Brian - perhaps in a future post...I'll need to find the original source to give credit. Also, this is the only picture it has REALLY worked for so far. I've tried on a few others and it didn't turn out so well.
- Justin Korn
Total awesome ! Love the greens on the tram
