Just was talking to http://www.friendfeed.com/garin and we came to the conclusion that if you are going to comment on a friendfeed item you should either be first or last. Why? They always are visible. So, here's your chance! :-)
Any worthy FF thread will engage interested parties enough to read most of the comments.
- iTad
Do I get bonus points if I end up being the thread killer?
- Kevin Johnson
Kevin you could always delete your 1st comment. :)
- rob friedman
Kevin! Yes, and we're having a great time watching this. It will get old fast, but for now it's really fun!
- Robert Scoble
Dang it I am 5 min too late. So I guess it is like posting on a blog post, you always want to be first.
- Jeff
Hey Enrique.. that would suck. Oh... LAST! Oh Jeff... Last.
- Ted Bradford II
That's why these threads just go on and on and on... people just want to have the last word. ;-P
- Chris Heath
Chris: I don't want the last word. I want the penultimate word. :-)
- Robert Scoble
Nope, I like the riffng of the conversation. Jump in anywhere. Enjoy the free flow of ideas and worry not about being seen by the scanners. Those who take the time to expand the thread have such a richer experience.
- michael sean wright
if i wasn't so tired i'd play that out Chris (as my last post was truly in jest). Late here in East TN. Gonna go tip a few cows and call it a day.
- Ted Bradford II
Ted: so was mine ... didn't you catch the winky tongue? (i'm on cape fear so i'm soon to bed as well)
- Chris Heath
Good point, unless you're actually using the RT chat aspect of FriendFeed, I guess...
- Andy Werner
I actually come back 5 days later to make comments so I can have the last word. Everyone has already forgotten what the conversation is about by then.
- Jeff
Chris- I did, but needed a segue into a cow tipping joke... cause I've never done so before. I do know this, tomorrow I will use the word 'penultimate' and dazzle family and friends. Hope alls quiet on the Cape bro. These storms have been a biotch. Annnnnnd Jeff just trumped us all. Tell him what he's won Enrique... nite all.
- Ted Bradford II
Second to last is always visible on my screen. :)
- Bwana ☠
Clever way to get the most commented upon comment on FF ever....
- Barak B
Ted, if you haven't dozed off- i'll have you know that the coastal winds tend to keep a lot of the storm systems at bay- if you're close enough to the water - a mile or 5 inland can make a big difference some days - and spot t/storms can be localized around here big time - for instance yesterday it rained (for a short period) at my house while i was at work 5 miles away getting no rain - only knew cuz the ground was wet when i went home for lunch... ok - it's really time for sleep now - g'nite FriendFeed
- Chris Heath
friendfeed should allow for "liking" comments so top comments can be the ones shown, no matter the chronology. And allow the users to watch comments by likes, threaded or chronologically.
- Charbax
A blatant attempt at gaming the FriendFeed statistics for no real useful purpose... Oooh, can I be last, Please Please!!!
- Peter Kelley
No, Peter, you may not be last. That's my position.
- Chris Charabaruk
Are trying to go for the longest comment thread again?
- Amit Morson
Amit: no, most times one post gets hidden.
- Robert Scoble
In a different timezone you can have the advantage :)
- Rene de Vries
Okay, people, nothing to see here. Just walk on. This is the last comment. It's all clear now.
- Ruud van Wijngaarden
What if you write backwards? Does that help?
- Kieran Daly
Okay, people, nothing to see here. Just walk on. This is the last comment. It's all clear now. says Ruud van Wijngaarden
- Julian Edward
It would be nice if we could pick the number of comments shown at the top and bottom, I'd like to see the first 3 and last 3 for example.
- Kol Tregaskes
I usually read all the comments of something I'm interested in. I don't just read the top and bottom ones so I don't care where I come in. I comment on what I want to because I want to say something. It's nice if the original poster reads/responds to it, but not absolutely necessary. Most of the time the most fun/interaction comes from other commenters.
- Molly
Being last has one drawback. It makes you a thread-killer. I'm not sure some of us like being that. Sometimes I'd rather see the discussion keep going.
- George Hall (Australia)
Do like the suggestion made earlier that there should be bonus points for being the thread-killer...
- George Hall (Australia)
And there is nothing I hate more than reading that first comment that childishly claims "First!" and nothing more. "Last!" (until the next comment comes along)
- Jim Espinoza
By the way, I'm the last commenter in a very participated thread recently started by Robert Scoble, but that didn't gain me almost any new follower. I'm fine with this though, as I'd find silly being advantaged for being the last commenter ;-)
- Opensource Obscure
112 comments - but there can never be last comment, can there? Unless there is a FF limit on the number of comments - Paul, is there a limit?
- WoH: Minding her Steves
The current last comment is the next penultimate comment.
- Brian Sullivan
Not everyone is on here to market themselves to infinity. Why people, other than people who actually make money off of exposure, insist on wanting the most friends on ff/fb/ms/tt is beyond me. Not everyone is a Scobilite! Yes I did just make that word up... where do I copyright it? lol
- Jason Williams
Didn't someone blog about tinyurl's dominance a while back - about how they have too much power. Might have been Gillmor or Winer
- Bwana ☠
Winer. I don't think they have too much power
- Steve Gillmor
Kevin: i did not say it was spam. I put the smiley face indicating my partial joking nature. but only partial.
- Jeff
Robert: I could not figure out how to disable comments for particular post. It is really not a big issue since I have gmail, but I do think this post may never die.
- Jeff
I seem to be last on many of Steve Gillmor's posts @techcrunchit, the kiss of death to many a conversation. I should be so lucky here.
- Aron Michalski
from fftogo
A good way to stop? - Scoble puts in his penultimate comment Kevin Johnson says zaloom!
- Julian Edward
This is the Seinfeld of FF....the post and comments about nothing. I wonder what the record is for the most comments on FF?
- Jeff
As a fine-art platform, as a painting, do you think anyone would be interested in a full-screen image feed animated by Judith Supine? http://www.flickr.com/photos...
- stephen harlow
I like most anything distilled...information, bait...(distilled bait...is that like the worm at the bottom of the mezcal?)
- guruvan (Rob Nelson)
The difference would be that in this case the worm will stay on the bottom. No matter what.
- Ruud van Wijngaarden
I reckon it'll be Ruud van Wijngaarden
- Julian Edward
I am not quite sure about that. But willing to accept it. (Wait! You just called me a worm? The most underrated but valuable animal on the planet, that brings us fertile ground and eats dead stuff? It is a nice compliment, but might be a bit much).
- Ruud van Wijngaarden
No, No! - I didn't mean you worm. Although as you say they are useful beings. I do hope you'lll be in heroic position of last commenter! This is a case of the last shall be second. (Kevin Johnson being first of course). Scoble is penultimate we would hope. I'm aiming for 5th to last!
- Julian Edward
Yesterday somebody asked: 'if you pass the number two in a race, which place are you in?' and I answered wrong. Passing the last one in this race will be hard...
- Ruud van Wijngaarden
you mean Twitter Gar1n? You were talking on TWITTER WEREN'T YOU! LIAR "friendfeeed Garin" pfttttt still the same bi-polar
- sofarsoShaw BAZINGA!
Interesting comment, SFSS, very interesting indeed. So interesting, in fact, that I think that nothing further needs to be added to this thread. Ever.
- WoH: Minding her Steves
אתם כל כך מלא חרא, אבל זו בעיה שלך, לא שלי :-)
- David Gross
from email
actually i don't know how not to be the last commenter :)
- İ. Emre Kutlu
If only I could puncture the depths of Scoble's scratch-the-surface brain fart, techno-vangelizing, then I'd actually care WHOLE HEARTEDLY about this meaningfully retarded thread.
- sofarsoShaw BAZINGA!
The only way this thread can be made even more ridiculous and anachronistic is to move it to identi.ca.. Myspace would work, too.
- Tal Shafik
And since you can't guarantee being last unless you are the originator of the thread or can convince the originator to end comments (but since Robert is AWOL that is unlikely) -- you better be first. ;-)
- Brian Sullivan
That is a very neat app. It will be useful in places you do not know, but also, as it pushes updates, in places you do know as well. Definitely a must-have app for Android!
- Steve Farnworth
Seems like a bit of work to set all the channels, the settings for each friend, etc. - is there an app that would know all your preferences and apply them for you? Or is that one's wife?
- tom matrullo
It comes with a few default ones, but you need to get your own feeds based on your preferences. Did you watch the video?
- Robert Scoble
Tom: it's not much work. Did you watch the video?
- Robert Scoble
It all looks very intuitive. Tell you what, it would be killer on something like a hotel kiosk for users without smartphones.
- Steve Farnworth
Robert - I was thinking of you and 400 friends - each one requiring a specific setting. I'm nearly through the vid - it''s very rich - love the idea of having job info from CL coming in. Also, fantastic for GPS, no?
- tom matrullo
Desideratum: an app that would say "here there are no Starbuckses"
- tom matrullo
just watched the video at the gym. I wonder why he said he wasn't allowed to say that he was working on the iphone version? Then he said it was obvsiouly coming to iphone but he couldn't officially say it was. That was a bit odd.
- Mark
Mark: yeah that was a PR plan being exposed. Companies want to be able to give TechCrunch exclusives.
- Robert Scoble
from iPhone
Very smart idea and nice interview! Shall be interesting to see if it picks up. Might be too much for the average app user addicted to his 101 latest app games?
- Antonella Stellacci
"Paul Rawlins, make be a brew" reminds me of the first words Alexander Graham Bell spoke on the phone, "Mr. Watson, come here. I want to see you."
- Charlie Barone
Don't know what a "Boo" is? Ask Mr. Alexander Graham Bell!
- Charlie Barone
I was planning the first message to be "Ahoy hoy" but I said test I think :)
- Paul Kinlan
Exclusive. Building43 is first site to use JS-Kit's real time commenting engine, Echo. Watch video and try it here: http://www.building43.com/videos...
Cons? Noise. Also FriendFeed's real time comments not yet integrated (they promise those to come "soon").
- Robert Scoble
Checking it out via Friendfeed... this comment should just automagically show up, yes? EDIT: Oh, grunnocks. Should've RTFP in my haste to go 'first'.
- John Field
We sit down for a video with Khris Loux, CEO, where he explains how this will change comments for bloggers and other publishers and we also talk about the impact this could have.
- Robert Scoble
Keep us posted on how you like it. Looking forward to see Echo in action.
- Louis Gray
John: unfortunately not yet. They are working on FriendFeed comment integration. That will take a few more weeks.
- Robert Scoble
Louis: Building43 has Echo running now so you can comment there and try it.
- Robert Scoble
Thanks Scoble. Yeah, shouldn't have been so itchy-fingered.
- John Field
andy: Disqus isn't real time. Disqus looks old. On the other hand, I think JS-Kit needs to come up with more ways to control noise.
- Robert Scoble
Did I hear Scoble say... noise? What day is it?
- Bwana ☠
Oh, I've always been concerned about noise. I'm just less adverse to it than other people.
- Robert Scoble
Nice concept, but appears to be very very alpha.
- Daniel Sims
Daniel: when you're the first everyone gets to see the bugs. Yeah, there are a few. I'm sure they will get fixed in real time now there is some real load on the page.
- Robert Scoble
There seems to be some glitches that just turned up - we're on it :)
- Chris Saad
fyi in ie7 the b43 site (home and story pages) takes a very long time to load and basically "freezes" for a bit before finishing loading. it seems to stick on the echo piece from what i can tell.
- Allen Stern
Haha, my friend, you forget: You're using IE7. XD
- Sam Goldfield
sam - guess what - i try to live like a normal average internet user - helps me when i review services, provide consulting and run my startup - if you live like an early adopter geek but hope to reach the mainstream with your service, ur mistaken :)
- Allen Stern
Oh, no, I totally understand. I'm an early adopter in nature, but if I'm testing something I'll always check cross-compatability and loading times. For extra comfort, I test my projects in my DS web browser. :D
- Sam Goldfield
Allen: in that case, how's IE6 working out for you? :-)
- Robert Scoble
I'm not so sure I like the idea of comments from noisy environments (ala Digg, Reddit) appearing with the content generating them. On the other hand, seeing who's talking about the content on Facebook or Twitter or FriendFeed would be fine. There's gotta be some real good noise filtering there for this to work well. Threading too, in other to keep the conversations from multiple sources together and sane.
- Otto
(i am watching the video next) But - how is it more "real time" than disqus?
- andy brudtkuhl
I've never felt that Disqus was real-time by any means, although it probably depends on the site where it's implemented. Echo seems to be on par with FriendFeed for "real-timeness", for what it's worth.
- Tyson Key
Hi Guys, we are just testing a new service built on friendfeed and our vooices.us platform, it is an micro-podcasting service called FriendBoo - http://www.friendboo.com/ - we would love it if you could try it out and let us know what you think and how we can improve the service.
Google releases 20k+ lines of Wave Protocol code and Instructions. First step towards your own version of Wave. – The Next Web - http://thenextweb.com/2009...
Man, i can't wait to see other implementations over the coming months
- Zee.
Does that mean FriendFeed Wave Robot/Gadget is around the corner?
- Charbax
The question is, will other Wave servers be able to communicate with Google's Wave sandbox? If so, could someone else open up public access before Sept. 30?
- Dave
...oh yeah, Utterli, Utterz, forgot all about that...
- .LAG liked that
Good quality, remind me what the use case is?
- Buzz Bruggeman
What's the difference between this and AudioBoo? Oh, Btw, Robert, I couldn't find the NRU app on the app store. Do you know if its coming soon?
- Stephen Pickering
it is different from audioboo in that we are a service built upon Friendfeed, we are trying to push new content on to Friendfeed and allow people to easily disseminate their messages through what is very aswesome site (FriendFeed) - you get a heck load of meta data with friendfeed, such as likes and comments and we are planning to take advantage of that soon.
- Paul Kinlan
Utterli dial-in doesn't work from the UK any more Rasheen.
- alison gow
We didn't know about cinch, but it seems that works by posting the audio file via email, which there is a restriction on friendfeed about how many you can do, this uses the new FriendFeed API directly (which although it doesn't mean much) allows us to do some pretty cool stuff.
- Paul Kinlan
And we hope to be super simple - using the sign-in with oauth you don't have to do anything to get started, all you do is dial in and leave your message :)
- Paul Kinlan
And we are also trying to use this group as a distribution mechanism.
- Paul Kinlan
Sound Quality - okay, phones aren't the best to record with but comparably this wasn't the best. I do like a phone-quality message, just the sampling was way too low. For a good phone quality, look towards iPadio.
- CannonGod
Ease of Use - Very happy with calling in and entering PIN. Also the added advantage that any calls ended/disconnected are not recorded. This is good :)
- CannonGod
Cool we were debating on where or not to send all send the recorded message regardless... we chose not to send it in the end. :)
- Paul Kinlan
Social Networking - Obviously this is a service designed for FriendFeed users. I can have it post out to my Twitter through my standard FF settings, however it suffers the same of iPadio which is not being able to title your posts. Now while iPadio lets you change the default of your post, I would expect the creators of Vooices.us to allow me to verbally title my FriendBoo post. That would be rad as no-one yet does this! :)
- CannonGod
Emailing Audio In - I've been using the Voice Memo app on my iPhone and emailing in updates to my Posterous account. It would be nice if there was an option to do this here, with the possibility of a higher bit rate quality on recording. This would also allow me to title my post other than the default.
- CannonGod
FriendFeed Connectivity - I would like some control over where my posts can be sent, eg. Groups. This could be achieved if there was emailing options. This could also allow me to attach an image with my recording? That would be sweet :)
- CannonGod
Cool so you would have two audio prompts, one for the title and one for the body?
- Paul Kinlan
Conclusion - While I've mentioned using email a lot, that's only because it's easiest and why everyone else has done it. But as you guys have built a voice recognition system you should play to it's advantages and have it control any aspect I would consider typing. But to keep things still phone-based might I suggest allowing one to set up triggers using the keypad, i.e. post to a certain group - press 1# at end of call? I'm sure you guys are smart enough so you've probably considered most of these options.
- CannonGod
@Paul: Something like that, so only the title is converted to text. You may also want to consider converting the whole dang thing to text and posting that as a comment (or series of comments) and get the jump on AudioBoo doing audio transcribing with SpinVox ;)
- CannonGod
sure we need to workout what extra little features might make it in we were thinking of being able to set up tags but I like the groups idea more... not sure about transcription - spinvox isn't exactly cheap
- Paul Kinlan
Probably better then if it's just the title that's transcribed. I know SpinVox allow a limited amount of free transcribing of about a minute, enough for a title.
- CannonGod
We are looking for some testers of http://www.friendboo.com/ FriendBoo is a micro-podcasting tool build for FriendFeed - we have a UK and US inbound number and we are really keen to get people testing it in the real world so that we can make the UX super smooth.
Sure thing, just visit http://www.friendboo.com click Login and it should tell you how to work after that - if it doesn't then it is a bug and I will try and fix it asap :)
- Paul Kinlan
I'll definitely give this a try again later :)
- CannonGod
Jake: Cool, we would love the feedback
- Paul Rawlings
Paul, I'd definitely like to give it a spin. Off to check out the site...
- FFing Enigma
I would be glad to help as well. Enjoy me a good beta testing.
- Cody Heitschmidt
FFing: cool just log in and follow the instructions - if any of it doesn't work give me a shout.
- Paul Kinlan
Cody: excellent, if you login and spot any problems I am all ears :) spotted some issues already.
- Paul Kinlan
Just one thing, if Caller ID is withheld we can't hook it up to your account so you won't be able to use it.
- Paul Kinlan
Paul, seemed to work seamlessly for me. Few "noob" notes. 1. I am an idiot and tried to dial the zeros before the country code, I know I am an idiot but why put the zeros there. 2. It would be great if the robot english lady just told me to hung up once I am done, other than that seems sweet.
- Cody Heitschmidt
Cody: thanks, To be honest, I didn't know if the number should use 00 or not. So should the number be 14153764128?
- Paul Kinlan
thats what worked for me!! (no zeros worked for me!) (zeros didnt!)
- Cody Heitschmidt
Cool just updating the page now :) - thanks
- Paul Kinlan

The launch of a service like Google Voice is overdue. There's great open source convergent technology to control phone calls for some time, but no one serious has put a great service out there for free. I just wonder when Google Voice will be available in Brazil.
- arnaldostream
I'm also hoping that Google Voice will come to Mexico anytime soon, but I totally understand that phone companies will be against it. I agree with you that is long overdue.
- Diego Espinoza V.
Telcos already have some issues to deal with, a service like Google Voice is just another (big or not). They'll most likely make deals with these phone service providers, another race, between telcos, to see which one gets more traffic.
- arnaldostream
Clark: If I had a Google Voice number, I'd still keep my texting plan, because like you said, maybe some companies will start to complain about GV.
- Diego Espinoza V.
The telcos are probably partnering with Google, they still have to route the traffic anyway.
- arnaldostream
But how do you feel having your voice going through Google as well, shortly they will send you ads based on the content of your call.
- Roni Segoly
Great run through of the basics around Google Voice. I use it primarily as a disposable number for telemarketers et. al.
- sean808080
I hope it will become available in the EU soon.
- Șerban Dragoș
Roni Segoly: That's a good point, did you read the usage policy and the legal stuff yet?
- arnaldostream
Digging around a bit more, commenters at http://adland.tv/content... cite a Gawker claim that it was for a CourtTV show called Parco PI. The blogger behind the billboard, thatgirlEmily (http://thatgirlemily.blogspot.com/ -- last updated in July of 2006), mentions Parco by name. Case closed.
- Stephen Mack
seems i could just go on, just cause this one billboard was viral, dont mean it hasnt been done, :(
- chaz2b
I don't believe the daily mail and flatheadbeacon ones are real either. You're right it's possible that it's been done. I just find it very unlikely, given the cost. Why pay that much on revenge when you could just take the money?
- Stephen Mack
Very cool product. Would have been nice if they were clearer about what the product actually is on the home page - had to dig thru to the products page to know that it was a solvent you apply to a surface. Wasn't sure if the product was a solvent/coating or if it was in the marker. I would buy this.
- The Fat Oracle
This product has been around for awhile, right? I could have sworn I've seen this stuff in non-web media.
- Zach Landes
Zach, yeah I'm sure but very cool! :-)
- Kol Tregaskes
Oh, definitely Kol. If I were building one of those trendy silicon valley offices (kinda like the one in the photo...)I'd totally have to add this.
- Zach Landes
Or if I were a parent of a 3 year old. My sis & her husband just bought a house. They could so use this given my niece's affinity for crayons.
- The Fat Oracle
the walls in the study rooms of our new library are like this.
- Marie
nice! One of the walls of our conference room is coated with a material that makes it a whiteboard as well. Very handy
- Tamara
It's uncomfortable while drawing in the conner
- Tony
I was looking at this just yesterday for the room we'll be homeschooling in. I'm excited to try it.
- Heather Solos
Ironically, I just finished making a homemade white board with clear acrylic and some hardboard and some woodworking. If only I had know, I could saved a lot of work....
- Jim
This is so cool. I was actually talking with someone yesterday about having a room with whiteboard in my house. So this was very useful. THanks!
- *Tiffany Diamond*
Just wait til the late 2010s, when nanotechnologically-based paints appear. You will be able to paint computer screens onto any surface in your home.
- J. D. Ebberly
Allen: there is a lot of data portability in what I saw, yes.
- Robert Scoble
i think Data Portability is the future :D </obvious statement>
- Chris Saad
Dj: it is going to be interesting to see how this changes people's approach to blogging and Tumblr/Posterous.
- Robert Scoble
Dj: it is going to be very interesting to talk with Steve Rubel on Friday afternoon after the demo.
- Robert Scoble
it's the first ever virtual blogging tool - you just imagine your posts and they appear!
- Allen Stern
Allen: I imagine that you appear and you do, how do you do that? :-)
- Robert Scoble
oh i just bought guy's package - i have hired a team of allen's - for example, i am the evening shift allen (allen2.1 internally) - the night allen arrives at 11pm (allen 4.2 internally)
- Allen Stern
Am I that far behind? Why is blogging dead, and by real time you are talking about more than live stream video?
- ASKJDOG
Hmmm. Sounds like FF benefits from this.
- Nick in Manila
Nick: FriendFeed might benefit, yes. JDOG: we are talking about real time text. Just like here.
- Robert Scoble
miiko - sometimes we all need to smile, that's my job as Allen2.1
- Allen Stern
Allen: personally I like the morning shift better. Since I'm in London I'll go to sleep now and wait for him to show up.
- Robert Scoble
Got it: real time text stream = "blog." Blogging is dead; long live blogging!!
- Tom Guarriello
remember when techCrunch said they were gonna break embargoes... you should, too
- Marco
aah still in london! get off ff and have some fun
- Allen Stern
Allen: I was off FriendFeed all day!
- Robert Scoble
How can you bring something back that isn't gone. Have you seen the WordPress growth numbers? They have been very consistent and very impressive for many, many months.
- Christopher Harper
Missionary: well, I have definitely left a lot of my blogging due to real time interactions like these, but I don't have page views to worry about.
- Robert Scoble
Mark: I don't know about video, but I'm sure that the second this gets announced it will be discussed on FriendFeed to death.
- Robert Scoble
miiko - be nice or i get out the voodoo doll!
- Allen Stern
Thanks Robert. I'm starting to "get it" just thinking how to implement this in my niche
- ASKJDOG
I just add a lot of this other stuff to the blogging I'm already doing. Most savvy bloggers are doing the same thing. They sort of all fit together in my world.
- Christopher Harper
somehow this feels like a test of the "tc50 and demo broadcast system" - im sure we will see more of these "oh hot damn i just saw x but i cant talk about it until y" posts come sept.
- Allen Stern
Allen, why do companies talk to people about products and then tell them they must tell no one about it? I mean, since no one can talk about it, no extra excitement is generated? I don't really get it
- Mark
@Allen, to give the individual an opportunity to form an opinion and write a well thought out article when the service launches.
- Darren
Mark, tomorrow's event will be streamed live. Hopefully it all goes smoothly.
- Miiko Mentz
from iPhone
Mark - embargoes give writers a chance to test and play before the tool goes live - so the posts should be better than just press release copy - i rarely ever mention a product before it goes live - scoble likes to build excitement about what he sees. i just wish that more companies learned that excluisves are bad for startups
- Allen Stern
Mark: PR people tell me they use embargoes so that they can brief a large number of people without pissing anyone off. If I wrote about this stealth company tonight, for instance, lots of other journalists would get pissed off at the company. Some, like TechCrunch, even refuse to write about companies if they aren't given equal access. It also, like Allen says, gives writers a chance to produce videos and test out products so they can write more authoritatively about them.
- Robert Scoble
So its largely to stop competing blogs, sites etc from complaining that Site X got earlier access than Site Y for example?
- Mark
Robert/Allen, well said. Mark, in theory, yes. But it doesn't always work out that way.
- Miiko Mentz
from iPhone
So what was all the fuss Arrington was making last year about embargoes? Didn't he say he would violate every single one?
- Mark
Mark: Arrington just said he reserves the right to break embargoes when he wants. Usually if the company deals with him straight up he'll agree to the embargo. What I hate are companies that give some people special deals. Apple does this all the time, which is why I never go to Apple press conferences anymore.
- Robert Scoble
a good example of poor choices are YC startups - they go to tc/sent to tc/etc and miss so many more opportunities for coverage - works well for TC tho - they always get a HN frontpage.
- Allen Stern
So I wonder what this would mean for newspapers.
- Michael
from iPhone
Can't wait to hear more. I hope it's a tool to make it easy to aggregate content into blog posts -- that's what I've been wishing for lately. Sometimes I have up to ten browser tabs open to pull in all the urls, images, videos and quotes I want to include in a new blog post.
- Andy Kaplan-Myrth
It will be interesting to see what it is. Maybe my guest bloggers will cover the story. I am on a worklife summer break! Blogger since '02.
- Martin Lindeskog
Robert Blogging has never gone away! Not in my book.
- Technogran
Scoble, are you referring to LazyFeed ?
- Ahsan Ali
We here at Posterous are looking forward to the announcement. Innovation is always great -- can't wait to see what's going down on Friday.
- Garry Tan
I really don't like being forced to spam my tweetstream just to sign in for an Echo invite. I won't do it. Bad bad practice, guys. But fascinating service concept.
- Nick in Manila
I understand scoble's statement now. I was all ready to shift 97% of my publishing off my blog and onto platforms like FriendFeed till I just saw how Echo and the new Disqus features are enhancing the conversation on the blog. It's dragging me back.
- Nick in Manila
Glad to hear you will be blogging more Nick - FriendFeed and other services are fantastic for virality and discussions with your friends - We feel that Echo makes those services even MORE relevant while putting your blog back in the picture.
- Chris Saad
Chris - interesting. This certainly isn't an either/or thing. Well, not any longer. Heh.
- Nick in Manila
It rarely is :) Communication systems rarely go away - they only find their place
- Chris Saad
Nope. I am only inviting people I've met face-to-face and who I want to follow. I'm already following you here on FriendFeed, though, which is even better.
- Robert Scoble
that makes complete sense... so after your jaunt across the ocean head over here to Hawaii :-)
- Crystal Clear
Isn't it a little rude to refer to hidden feeds? As they used to tell us at NSA, true secrets are those shared with no one.
- Jack&Cleo
Jack, it is very rude to talk about a secret group, but that's one of the things I'm studying too. Humans are fun to study. SEO types are going crazy over trying to get into this account, by the way.
- Robert Scoble
Robert, really, I'm just going to say this just once - repeatedly talking about your "secret feed" is ridiculous. It completely looks like an 11yo trying to grab attention and prove he's a "popular" kid. You admit it's completely rude to talk about hidden feeds, and yet you justify it because "I'm studying humans," which is another arrogant and incredibly rude thing to say (you do not refer to people as subjects, ever). Scoble, for someone with your accomplishments, I expected better character...
- Ben Parr
Just open it up, let us follow @SecretScoble, but refuse to follow us back, whats the big deal?
- Mark
They trade Scoble nudes like baseball cards in there. That's the word on the street.
- Geoff Schultz {TF}
I can see your use of the secretscoble account to be very simalar to my use if twitter. I have started to put a cap on the people I follow, rather than blindly following everyone back, about 60% of the people in my twitter stream I have met in person, and about 20% are people I hope to meet. I have found I start missing things important to me if I go over 450. I do respond to every...

Ben: sorry, every Twitter company is studying Twitter's users. Every single damn one. If that's rude to do, then go postal on all the Twitter developers. Mark: it's a big deal because I want to talk with a very specific audience there, not with everyone. I am studying how that changes my writing, or what I want to do. In my research of how normal people use the Internet they want...

Ben: and how will this make me more popular? Or prove to others that I'm popular? You have some weird ideas of how to prove you're popular. James: my secret group. Gotta go, the black suburbans are here. :-)
- Robert Scoble
As a uk tax payer I'm helping to pay for your blogger holiday - can I get in ?
- Adrian
Adrian: no. It's like the Suggested User List. Only less fair.
- Robert Scoble
Hmmmm... I think I was following that account on my old @freddavis account... another hassle with Twitter never giving me my account back... add me as @fucktwitter, or just follow me here ;-)
- Fred Davis
So in other words, you're finally experimenting with "the friends are the filter"... you know, the method that you were absolutely insistent wasn't as good as "follow everyone" a while ago? I'm not going to say "I told you so" but... I told you so :)
- Ian Betteridge
Great friends can be the best filters and can allow you to get a much cleaner stream of what's happening than following everyone - same story with RSS feeds - I think Ian is quite right, but maybe you are onto something different Robert...
- Robin Good
Robin, I think we're actually both right: a lot depends on what you're looking to use your feed for. Robert uses his quite differently to the way that I use it. I don't care about 99.99% of the stuff which comes up enough to need to know about it *right now* - Michael Jackson's death being a classic example. But there are certain things that I do want to know about now, and those tend to be the kinds of things that friends would pass on.
- Ian Betteridge
You could do a quick mashup on your site that could authenticate with twitter and show the home feed for @secretscoble on that page to everyone, without them having to join. Couple of issues with that, though. It would also show tweets from people whom @secretscoble follows who otherwise have protected feeds. Also, basic HTTP authentication b/w your server and Twitter - not very secure.
- sameer
just take screen shots from time to time if you want to make a point about what you are seeing there. then get your friends' permission, and write a blog post about it.
- Laura Norvig
Bob Plunk have you been on the sauce? Just add the people he follows to your account and you have a replica of @SecretScoble. I promise you Robert is not saving all his pearls of wisdom for that twitter account. He isn't tweeting revelations that will change the world on his alternate account. It's just some experiment he is running on things such as how much attention people pay to invites.
- Mark
Until you figure it out, I'll use your SUL as a filter to find interesting streams I am not currently following.
- Alberto Saavedra
Twitter should just display posts from everyone you are following in a stream, just like they should allow anyone to sample someones followers. Basic.
