Most companies let multiple staffing agencies battle it out - even after they tell one staffing agency that "you've got an exclusive". There is no risk to the company using 5-7 staffing agencies and praying one gets lucky enough to find a candidate. This is especially true in a down economy when most staffing agencies are desperate for business.

Very true, I agree. I don't mind if a client has one other firm working on a search, but if it becomes obvious it's been farmed out to everyone, I'll drop the search and I spend my time with other clients or developing new business and getting retained searches. Down economy or not. I think the main issue lies in the candidates understanding how to deal with multiple firms calling them about the same position so they don't hurt their chances of getting the job.
