My 23 year-old sister signs up for Twitter, cancels. "Saw no point in the account."
Screen shot 2009-11-06 at 11.03.33 PM.jpg
From this evening. Another thrilling Friday night. - Louis Gray
Whenever I am on Twitter my gf never fails to remind me how stupid and pointless she thinks it is - Holden Page
So someone in *your* family doesn't grok Twitter either. My brother says he'll never even set up a Twitter account at all; he sees no point either. Apparently these people see the words "What are you doing?" above the text box and think it's nothing but the Facebook status update without Facebook. Some people just don't get it at all... - Dennis Jernberg
In *my* family (asterisks per Dennis), most of them use Facebook. Nobody else uses Twitter at all. - Louis Gray
in my family everyone uses Facebook as well, my mom has a twitter account, she never touches it, she thinks it is dumb. - Holden Page
Sure enough, Facebook is exactly what everybody in my family but me uses, too! Well, I'm on Facebook too, but I don't use it like they do. For one thing, I don't play any of the games; I hide them instead. And none of them has even heard of FriendFeed... - Dennis Jernberg
hahaha that is epic!! Twittter got dissed by Ms Gray :D - Susan Beebe
My family is the same. Twitter is pointless to them. There's so much more than just status updates to them. - Jesse Stay
Well, I don't get Twitter either. Anyone want to explain it to me? - Cristo
It's not fun when you sign up and have no friends / people to interact with...and all the interesting people only talk to each other. All my friends didn't "see a point" until they built their own network(s). Just sayin' - Mona Nomura
My wife is also that way, btw - I may *just* be able to get her to join FourSquare though. - Jesse Stay
Social media circle jerk. - Cristo
Jesse, it took a lot of work, but i got my gf to join FriendFeed haha - Holden Page
As if Twitter is some brilliant thing that only a certain so-called tech crowd gets. - Cristo
My sister has known that I've used Twitter for several years now. Whenever I brought it up, that was her reaction, "Don't get it. Don't see the point." She created an account a month or so ago and she's totally into it now. When I asked her what made the difference, she shrugged and said she wasn't sure. "Your friends started using it, didn't they?" I asked her. "Yes." heh. :D - pea ♥ fierce as a woozle
Why don't you guys go have this conversation on Twitter? :) - Cristo
Pfff. Cristo, you know full well twitter can't deal with the c word. :) - Micah Wittman
I will make the bold prediction that most of my brothers and sisters will never join or use Twitter. I have one brother that does, occasionally, but the rest will never, ever use it. There's no point when they can get the same thing from Facebook and more. - Jesse Stay
Mona - nailed it! :) - Susan Beebe
Re Mona: I myself didn't even bother to sign up for Twitter till this last June, when I discovered an existing online songwriting community I belong to had a Twitter presence. That's when I set up my account and started to use Twitter. Then I found that some of the NaNoWriMo offshoots I take part in also had a Twitter presence. That was the beginning. Since then I've built up a much... more... - Dennis Jernberg
my girlfriend has no interest in it either. she uses facebook for all her net communication needs and is quite happy... - Terry O'Fee
I got all my friends to sign up for Twitter, all found it pointless. So, I really don't get the point either. I'll delete mine too. :D - Faraz Mullick
This is why I am on most social networks. - Robert Scoble from iPhone
Only a few of my real-life friends are even on Facebook, and the ones that are rarely update. The social web can be pretty disappointing sometimes. - Michael Slattery from iPhone
Most everyone I know is on Facebook now, with a few exceptions that refuse to use much of anything on the internet except for youtube and blogs. Nobody gets the point of twitter, especially with facebook/friendfeed offering the same type of communication options, if not more. However, the nice thing about twitter/friendfeed is that it's searchable. The other day I was watching the events from Fort Hood unfold on twitter. I couldn't do that easily on facebook. That's where twitter shines. - Ⓐ ☠ slayerboy ☠ Ⓐ
My Second Life avatar started on Twitter in the good old days, when everyone you followed followed you back. But my real life account has about 20 followers, so it only really works as a reader - and that rocks. - Michael Slattery from iPhone
second life.. i read books like snow crash, get excited and find SL nothing like it ;) - Terry O'Fee
If new users have no followers and fail to get the reader part, of course they stop. And the statistics confirm that. - Michael Slattery from iPhone
I do agree. It is really difficult to convince someone to use twitter. And even if I do, they don't stay active on the service. They too state "I don't see any point in the service". Often are the times when they are convincing me it is nothing but a blog platform with 140 characters limit. - Amit
I've learned that it's not a good idea to try to convince friends to join Twitter. Unless they get it, they will simply annoy you with Facebook style Tweets. Better to seek out Twitter users who have learned the knack of posting interesting Tweets. - Jimmy Walker
If she doesn't get it, or anyone else for that matter, be glad they're on their way. Twitter never worked for me either and I'm happily not participating as well. - FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
I just realized I've been forgetting to tell them to start by following interesting people and not even think about posting their own tweets for the first little while (Robert's advice) - I wonder if that would make more of a difference. - MaryB, BrandingBroadOfFF from iPhone
My 25 year old brother said the same thing. - Rochelle
My family is a Facebook family as well. - Trish R
+Mona I think there is a follower critical mass that needs to be achieved (of real interacting/interesting people) before anyone 'gets' Twitter - JSNFLMNG from iPod
She's ahead of the curve. Take note. - EBrewer
I see Twitter as another information portal, and a social channel (albeit limited). For those things it's great. I don't use facebook all that much, but it's good to chat with old friends to say howdy and share current happenings. I'm me no matter what social hub I'm on, but the local laws/rules/community etiquette fits my preferences better in some virtual hangouts. - Mark Essel from iPhone
My daughter of about the same age also got and shortly thereafter canceled a twitter account. - SuezanneC Baskerville
Twitter is useful as a minimalist news broadcasting system. Twitter is worse than useless as a medium for conversation. I mostly use Twitter in combination with Topsy searches to pluck off the most interesting news stories of the day on selected topics. Without Topsy, I would stop using Twitter entirely because of the information overload. - Sean McBride
Mona's point is pretty much spot on. I kind of "imported" a Revision 3 forum network into Twitter, which led to FriendFeed, which had sort of a recursive bend back into Twitter, which led to finding Twitter recommendations, which then opened me up to following people from IRL, and then...ah crap. I've stopped using Twitter as much, though, because Facebook is where the people I CARE about really are. And in case you're wondering, I'm friends with Mona on Facebook ;) - Mike Nayyar
I've hit a wall trying to get my friends to sign up for Twitter. It's like they've got an image issue. Whenever I try to explain it's value for news and as RSS replacement, people sort of stop listening. They're left thinking it's Facebook without the "fun stuff," which is lesser and redundant for them. - Jeremiah Green
Is it fair to say that the tweets related to tech news that some folks think are so wonderful and important are primarily links to web sites, blogs, new articles, and so on produced by someone other than the tweeter? So far as I've seen, subscribing to, say, all the employees of a company doesn't produce much news about the company; instead you see posts about where the employees ate lunch and stuff like that. Of course I may just not be looking at the people. - SuezanneC Baskerville
Unless you have a defined business strategy, there really is not much point to Twitter, unless you just want to connect for fun, which is under my business strategy :) - Steve Borgman

@sacredgeometry huh? yeah, gotta disagree with you there, i'm painfully myself.

lol, I love how a bunch of people who don't actually know you (I assume) keep accusing you of not acting like yourself... :) - Amy
Yea really, if this came from Ryan or your mother, then i be worried! - Fee501st
Hehe, Veronica, maybe the question you should be asking them (as a social experiment) is precisely how they think you should be acting and see if they all say the same thing. - Amy
Perhaps they just catch Tekzilla right after an episode of the Guild and get confused... ;) - Thomas
I can't even understand where people get these ideas. What are they pulling that from? 140 characters? - Veronica
Maybe they want you to scrap the gadget premise of your shows and just dramatise your life on screen instead? - Amy
Maybe they are the people that think that attractive women can't be into tech. - Carlos Urrutia from Android
Sure, there'll be people like that, but I'm sure they'd just come right out and say it then. They wouldn't be accusing Veronica of hiding her personality. - Amy
I could see how he maybe could get that from Tekzilla, but not in any way from Twitter. - Dave Friedel
Dave: Really? - Amy
Well, I mean it's a scripted show, so maybe he's misinterpreting that. - Dave Friedel
He is still talking: http://twitter.com/sacredg... - Veronica

Maybe he doesn't understand what that means? - Veronica
Maybe he thinks I'm TOO MUCH myself? Like a caricature? - Veronica
I guess not. Oh well, may as well see about getting more more caffeine into my system to make up for that guy :) - Carlos Urrutia
C'mon -- There can never be *too* much Veronica... :) - Thomas
Veronica a caricature? I don't think so. I say you look at act pretty real to me. - Carlos Urrutia
Maybe it's all the flipface art... - Thomas
well that his problem if he dont understand, because, we like you just the way you are Veronica! - Fee501st
Or the guy could be thinking, "Oh look, pretty woman on a tech show. MUST be doing it for the guys." - Carlos Urrutia
Fee: agreed :) - Carlos Urrutia

Why Won't Google's GMail Team Stop Spamming Me?
Screen shot 2009-11-07 at 6.12.33 AM.png
You slept with GMail Team's wife? - Matthew DeVries
Everyday I get numerous messages from Google's "Gmail Team" about messages left on server. I don't want them. These are spam to me. It is a pain to have to delete them all every single day. How can I stop them from showing up in my email box? I can't seem to find a setting in gmail to deal with these unwanted intrusions into my life. Why can't I opt out of this barrage of harassment... more... - Thomas Hawk
Stop using gmail, would be my first suggestion. It isn't reliable; convenient to have and use under certainty circumstances for sure, but not really reliable. I certainly wouldn't count on it for important business use (but I'm sure you're not doing that anyway). - Kittyburgers
o.O Show me a single company's email service with a better up time than gmail. I know my corporate email system has been down more in the last month than gmail has in the last decade. - Matthew DeVries
I'm sure there are numerous services around the world that are more reliable. My ISP's mail servers, for example, are more reliable. There are lots of systems in place around the globe. - Kittyburgers from IM
Furthermore how can we "BLOCK" them from sending us any more spammy messages? I hope to see them work on this annoying problem. Its getting way out of hand alright. At least if we're able to block them it won't show up in my direct messages but get kept somewhere else where it's out of my view. - Jeunelle Foster
to g or not to g - VAL D.
actually I really love gmail and I really appreciate all of the spam that they do filter out of my life. I just wish that they would allow me to opt out of these damn left on server messages. Does anyone know if there is a way I can get Apple's email system to somehow automatically dump anything from the "gmail team" to the garbage bin or somehow to convince Apple's own spam system that this is spam. I've tried to train apple's email reader that this is spam by marking it spam but they still keep coming. - Thomas Hawk
I would think that of all people, the gmail team would be sympathetic to this problem. - Thomas Hawk
Thomas, why don't you just build a filter? - Matthew DeVries
Is it really from the Gmail team or spoofed emails? - imabonehead
How do you know it's the Gmail Team? It could just be spam spoofing as coming from the Gmail team. - Maxamad (Amazigh)
Maxamad, I'd be surprised if this is the case. In general gmail does an *amazing* job at killing all of my spam. I might get 2 or 3 spam messages a week out of thousands probably that I would get otherwise. If this many spam messages are now getting through with spoofed sending all from the gmail team than that's just as big a problem for the gmail team to be aware of. I think that these are in fact actually from google though. - Thomas Hawk
Perhaps you're actually part of the Gmail team and you forgot about it? :P - imabonehead
Good point, but if I'm part of the gmail team now I've somehow missed the paychecks. ;) - Thomas Hawk
Why would the gmail team send you anything related to your facebook password. Did Google buy facebook when we weren't looking and integrate it into gmail?? - April Russo (app103)
Just mark it all as spam and setup filters to send it to spam automatically. - Maxamad (Amazigh)
April, I think they are sending me a notification that someone else's facebook spam contained a dangerous link so they didn't forward it on to me. It's these notifications that I'd like to somehow stop. Maxamad, I've marked them as spam in Apple's mail program dozens of time. They don't go to spam. I'm not sure how to set up a filter with my apple mail client to automatically route this to the garbage. - Thomas Hawk
Oh, I meant filters in Gmail...I'm not sure how they work with Apple's mail since I don't use IMAP - Maxamad (Amazigh)
Create filters in the gmail web interface. The tags you create in gmail will be seen as folders in Mail.app. Just make the filters in the web interface, and Mail.app will behave the way you want automatically. - Jason Wehmhoener

I am formulating a Tree Form Machine doc (http://tfdocs.com/) to make it easier for people to mix & match statements & add variables, to make their own. What would be really helpful is if yours includes statements pertaining specifically by name, to various ad networks, 3rd party scripts, etc. about their privacy policies and how it relates to yours. April - I lug my 17" HP 8730W around quite a bit. It's a heavy beast, but it's still nice to be able to lug it around. No, I don't carry it around as much as I would a Netbook, but I certainly carry it a lot more than I would a desktop computer. That's why I have a bag with wheels.
