the Gillmor Gang is on 'hiatus' and the shows that were not released in podcast form (since the end of april) were archived but may not see the light of day - that is totally up to Steve ... some fans have 'bootlegged' the show but i'm pretty sure that there are some missing before people realized they had to record it or it wouldn't be out (in a timely fashion)

"track" is whatever anyone wants to make of the term - no one has a real definition. I hate the term. There are 15 different definitions for track. How about "real-time search"? Makes so much more sense than "track".

I've heard about 5 different definitions of "track" from Gillmor. I'm not sure he knows what it is either. The "track" I knew was XMPP real-time feed based on keyword, along with SMS alerts based on keyword. What Twitter recently released is that, minus SMS.

FriendFeed is definitely a little heavy on resource usage. It also eats up RAM after a while. I'm in Chrome, though.

Mary, nope, not really. I've had it crap out on me a couple of times but it's fairly rare. Keep in mind that I'm running Webkit nightlies so my experience is fairly variable compared to running Safari 4.

@Jesse: It's a dead twitter command "track keyword" sends you realtime updates whenever the word is used. Think of it like realtime google alerts for friendfeed.

Twitter's brought back track, it's just no one cares. You can now have updates by keyword on Twitter pushed to you, via XMPP, just like track used to. Gillmor says that's not track.

You're right Jesse - it's not exactly Track but it's getting a lot closer. The old Twitter Track allowed you to set up multiple search terms (e.g. track iphone) and get those delivered to your IM with zero time lag. At any time you could type "track" to see what you're currently tracking and "untrack" to untrack something - e.g. "untrack iphone". There are some third party tools that...

Arnold Schwarzenegger has been quoted saying that illegal immigrants cost the state $5 billion annually. Given this data, what would you have the state do with illegal immigrants? Turn them into citizens so that they can participate fully in California's economic system (pay taxes)? Send them back home? Do nothing?

Many illegal immigrants pay income taxes too. They find work using dodgy SSNs and taxes get deducted by the employer. The drawback, from what I understand, is that legalizing everyone who is here illegally opens the floodgates to other potential immigrants to also try their luck. Also, it will annoy the hell out of Indian and Chinese H1Bs currently waiting 5-7 years for the employer sponsored green cards.

Don't be dense...no one is saying the people themselves are illegal, as in their existence is outlawed. The whole "no person is illegal" is a linguistic red herring designed to avoid the issue that, no matter how complex the situation from a social viewpoint, from the legal POV it is simple: they are breaking the law by being here because they didn't or couldn't follow the due process for legal entry.

Alex, in fairness it's not a legal term. It's a political term wrangled from a legal definition. They are undocumented, perhaps have expired visas, and their travel may have been in violation of the law. It sounds ominous to call them "illegal immigrants," like being here is something they did in offense to the state that conspired with big business to ease restrictions on undocumented workers in the US.

It's a bigger and quite OT discussion, but the US government watches the undocumented stats and loosens border control when labor falls to a certain level. Right now we have massive unemployment so the government would like to ship the second class work force back home so our natural born citizens can find work.

I made no judgments on the personal qualities of the people who are here illegally. It's not a crime like rape or theft. Most of these people are here because they want a better life and are willing to work for it (whereas there's often no way for them to do so in their home countries). The best way to get rid of them, if that is our goal, is to destroy our economy to the point where it's no longer seen as a place worth dying to get in to.
