Be honest who bought any Michael Jackson songs online, iTunes, Amazon etc?
I bought Wanna be Startin Something off iTunes. - Mike Fruchter
I have not. I did hear a 2008 electronic mix of Wanna Be Starting Something on the radio that was good enough to buy, though. - Louis Gray
Not me. Heard a bunch on the radio and that was enough for me. I was never really a fan and don't feel like I should suddenly become a fan just because he died. - Akiva Moskovitz
Do you know who did the remix Louis? - Frankie Warren
Apparently a lot of people have: http://friendfeed.com/poppy... - J.D. Deutschendorf
Already had all the ones I wanted.. many, many of them.. - Andy Connell
Good question, Frankie. I can poke around. It was on 92.7 Energy out of San Francisco the evening he died, and was called the 2008 remix. - Louis Gray

I just talked with Steve Gillmor and he said "track is back and you can quote me on that."
he has an inside 'track' on this one. Steve was talking about this at the Building43 launch. now the ? is: for how long? - nicefishfilms
Off topic, but speaking of Steve Gillmor, has there ever been any official announcement why the Gillmor Gang was taken off the air so to speak. No more podcasts available for download. - Joel Marcey
It is on Twitter too - I don't know why he doesn't accept that - Jesse Stay
http://staynalive.com/article... - I can do the exact same things on Twitter now with track that I used to, albeit in beta - Jesse Stay
Joel: Leo Laporte said in the preshow of some podcast (cant remember which one) that Steve didn't have time for it anymore - George Deane
To bad was a good podcast. Now tell me what "track" is all about - courtney benson
Oh. Ok. Thanks George. I thought for a while they might have been doing the podcast live w/o archiving it for podcast. I guess now it is gone all together. As Courtney said "Too bad". - Joel Marcey
the Gillmor Gang is on 'hiatus' and the shows that were not released in podcast form (since the end of april) were archived but may not see the light of day - that is totally up to Steve ... some fans have 'bootlegged' the show but i'm pretty sure that there are some missing before people realized they had to record it or it wouldn't be out (in a timely fashion) - Chris Heath
Jesse: I can't use the Twitter feature. So it is not track. - Robert Scoble via iPhone
isn't this better than twitter TRACK because it TRACK's not only tweets but any posts from any service which is textifiable ? yes i made that word up - Mark
You could start a rap with that line :) - Roberto Bonini
Also unless you can filter by usinggroups of people It isn't track according to Gillmor. - Robert Scoble via iPhone
"track" is whatever anyone wants to make of the term - no one has a real definition. I hate the term. There are 15 different definitions for track. How about "real-time search"? Makes so much more sense than "track". - Jesse Stay
I've heard about 5 different definitions of "track" from Gillmor. I'm not sure he knows what it is either. The "track" I knew was XMPP real-time feed based on keyword, along with SMS alerts based on keyword. What Twitter recently released is that, minus SMS. - Jesse Stay
I know Steve will have plenty to say on this at the conference. Hope its USTREAMED. - Mark
Otherwise Twitter, who invented the term, doesn't know what track is either because they named their recently released feature "track" - Jesse Stay
So the idea is you "TRACK" a keyword and you get notified when someone uses a tweet with the word in it? - Mark
Mark, that's what Twitter just released, yes - FriendFeed's doesn't do that yet - Jesse Stay
Where is this new feature twitter just released? - Brian Roy
another bonus for friendfeed is that the 'track' or 'realtime search' picks up words in the comments as well as the entries themselves (and i've noticed that expanded urls are also searchable after the tld) - Chris Heath
So If i type Chris Heath in a comment it will appear here: http://friendfeed.com/search... ????? - Mark
Brian, see my link above to my post on it a week or so ago - it's about a month old, but no one seems to want to give Twitter credit for it - Jesse Stay
Test Chris Heath Test Test Test - Mark
Holy Crap! - Mark
dude... i think you just blew your mind - Chris Heath

Just noticed that if I have FriendFeed open in a tab, Webkit hovers anywhere between 8-45% CPU usage in OS X.
No wonder my MBP is running hot. I'm not sure if it's changed since real-time search was implemented or not but I only today noticed the temperature. - Akiva Moskovitz
I get that a lot when I open multiple tabs with flash heavy objects. Sometimes it spikes to 100% till I close 'em out. - Adi
Have you had trouble with Safari 4 quitting on you too? I've had that a bunch, especially if I have a few other windows open and 2-3 CS4 apps going too . . . on a MBP. - Mary Baum
FriendFeed is definitely a little heavy on resource usage. It also eats up RAM after a while. I'm in Chrome, though. - Rahsheen ™
Mary, nope, not really. I've had it crap out on me a couple of times but it's fairly rare. Keep in mind that I'm running Webkit nightlies so my experience is fairly variable compared to running Safari 4. - Akiva Moskovitz

Real-time search. We have it. It's here. - http://blog.friendfeed.com/2009...
realtimesearch2.png
Try http://friendfeed.com/search... It's also fun to watch the embedded search on the blog blog post (http://friendfeed.com/search...). You can see people discussing the blog post, from the blog post, in real time! - Paul Buchheit
coooool - zsafwan 
GREAT ! - Stanislas Jourdan
Eeee. Awesome. - Mark Trapp via iPhone
Impressive! Now you can save real time searches as embeddable widgets. That's just awesome! This is a massively POWERFUL feature. Thank you FF team! - Brian Daniel Eisenberg
Lol, you flipped the switch before the post came out as far as I can tell. I was searching for it and I couldn't see it. - Daniel J. Pritchett
Yowsa. Makes quick easy work out of social media monitoring, don't it? - Ian Wilker
YAY!!! FriendFeed staff rocks, that's all there is to it =) - FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
Congrats Paul to you and your team! Another one bites the dust! - Jorge "JungleG" Escobar
WAAAAAAAAA.. meta real time search.. love the concept of embed a real-time search !! Way to Team FF -- luv u guys !! :)- - Peter Dawson
Do you guys sleep? Honestly, love the constant output and attention you guys pay to user feedback. I know this highly requested and probably not easy to implement. - Frankie Warren

Wow, great work! - Meryn Stol
I stand in awe of your hackfullness. - Ted Gilchrist
Good work. Much-anticipated. - Louis Gray
@Jesse: It's a dead twitter command "track keyword" sends you realtime updates whenever the word is used. Think of it like realtime google alerts for friendfeed. - Daniel J. Pritchett
I'm pretty sure Gillmor et al kept calling it "track" because that's what Twitter called it back when they had it for a week. - Daniel J. Pritchett
On a related note, live embeddable searches mean that I can hack together my own FF embeds for the pages that don't have them yet, like say "comment:dpritchett" http://friendfeed.com/search... - Daniel J. Pritchett
Daniel, Twitter never had this - this isn't "track" - Jesse Stay
you guys rock. - Karoli
...wowsers! Very nice! - JA Castillo (جاسون)
The blogpost said they're working to implement "keyword notifications" Jesse, that will be "track" - Frankie Warren
Twitter's brought back track, it's just no one cares. You can now have updates by keyword on Twitter pushed to you, via XMPP, just like track used to. Gillmor says that's not track. - Jesse Stay
That's why I hate the term "track" - no one knows what it is. The way Paul is explaining it, as real-time search, is a much better way of explaining it. - Jesse Stay
I guess we're still missing the realtime notifications piece that folks want. You can shape the firehose to watch terms in realtime but you can't yet get it pushed outside of FF via email or IM? - Daniel J. Pritchett
Daniel, Twitter has that right now, but Gillmor says that's not track - Jesse Stay

this is definitely cool and all, but what about API? We are falling way behind on feature sets :) - Tim Hoeck
It's like an alternative to watching TV, in a literary sort of way. - Ted Gilchrist

Yay! This is the killer feature (once it's in the API, of course ;) - Brandon Titus
I'd love to see a blog post about how this is implemented. Real-time search has some interesting problems. - Chris Lamprecht
I take it back - I can't integrate this into my blog until I can filter it to a single list. I really need an embed for "comment:dpritchett list:e20" except lists are still virtual in that no one other than me can see them unless I use the atom export. - Daniel J. Pritchett
Awesomeness! I'm loving this right now. - Anthony K. Valley ©
Wow you guys rock! - Alfredo
I am sloooooooooooow. But what/where is the template to make the embeddable widget. please? - Marg Uerite
You're right Jesse - it's not exactly Track but it's getting a lot closer. The old Twitter Track allowed you to set up multiple search terms (e.g. track iphone) and get those delivered to your IM with zero time lag. At any time you could type "track" to see what you're currently tracking and "untrack" to untrack something - e.g. "untrack iphone". There are some third party tools that... more... - Mike Doeff
Paul, is there a way to change the title of the embed? The long search string looks kinda bad. - Jesse Stay
Mike, Twitter offers that today. Gillmor says it's not Track. - Jesse Stay
Marg, after you do a search, click the "Share / embed search" link to get the embed code. - Dan Hsiao
Jesse, are you sure? Can you provide a URL describing this feature? I think you're referring to Twitter Search (and saved searches) which is totally different. - Mike Doeff
Mike, it's in beta and available to developers, but it's back, minus SMS support: http://staynalive.com/article... - Jesse Stay
Jesse, when / where did Gillmor say that isn't track? I'm pretty sure that Steve just wants the old track brought back, with some filtering capabilities added (the old Track didn't filter out blocked accounts). - Mike Doeff
Yay! Have been eagerly awaiting this. :) - Rick Turoczy
Mike, he's said in various comments. Looks like Track to me... Heck, it's even called "track". - Jesse Stay

Can You Live Without Your Vicodin? You May Have To. – Zelda Lily: Feminism in a Bra
"On Tuesday, an FDA panel voted 20-17 that prescription drugs that combine acetaminophen with other painkilling ingredients should be pulled off the market because of their strong relationship to accidental overdoses. These drugs include the very popular Vicodin and Percocet. Panelists cited FDA data indicating 60 percent of acetaminophen-related deaths are related to prescription products. “We’re here because there are inadvertent overdoses with this drug that are fatal and this is the one opportunity we have to do something that will have a big impact,” said Dr. Judith Kramer of Duke University Medical Center." - Steven Perez via Bookmarklet
Well fuck. - tehKenny
Well, tehKenny, what the FDA wants is for the oxycodone and (drat! is it hydrocodone?) to be dispensed on their own, without tylenol in them. It's not like you can't buy tylenol OTC and take it with those meds. - Ladybug Heather
How bout we just legalize pot instead. - Geoff Schultz
I would much rather prefer the narcotic alone, tylenol is worthless to me. After surgery I would ask for the Vicoden with Advil instead, better as anti-inflammatory anyway. - jlt-Janet

Arnold Schwarzenegger has been quoted saying that illegal immigrants cost the state $5 billion annually. Given this data, what would you have the state do with illegal immigrants? Turn them into citizens so that they can participate fully in California's economic system (pay taxes)? Send them back home? Do nothing?
did he provide some sort of reasoning behind this statement? - Cassidy
You mean why it is this way or why he stated it? - EricaJoy
Sorry, should've been more specific, how do illegal immigrants cost the state that much? - Cassidy
And how much do illegal immigrants working in Central CA's farms contribute to the state's GDP? And the taxes bit? A *lot* of illegal immigrants already pay taxes. - Thaths
How do they pay income tax if they aren't technically citizens? - EricaJoy via IM
sales tax - Roshan Vyas
Ah, good point. So does paying sales tax mean hanging out without paying income tax is ok? - EricaJoy via IM
No it's not ok, but i think the action should be country/state providing a faster path towards immigration rather than deporting them. I think many (most?) of the immigrants would happily pay those taxes if it meant being able to live without fear of deportation, exploitation, vigilantes, etc. - Roshan Vyas
I am also of the legalize and reap the benefits bent, however what drawbacks would there be to faster legalized immigration? Any? - EricaJoy via IM
I might be the wrong person to ask. I'm biased highly in favor of less (or completely un-) restricted immigration. But (to put on my Lou Dobbs hat - which i presume is worse than playing devils advocate) I would think that if everyone were able to attain citizenship along with the rights associated with that, there would be less manual labor to exploit with sub-minimum wages and no... more... - Roshan Vyas
Many illegal immigrants pay income taxes too. They find work using dodgy SSNs and taxes get deducted by the employer. The drawback, from what I understand, is that legalizing everyone who is here illegally opens the floodgates to other potential immigrants to also try their luck. Also, it will annoy the hell out of Indian and Chinese H1Bs currently waiting 5-7 years for the employer sponsored green cards. - Thaths
Lot's of "illegal" immigrants pay state and federal income tax too. It's a great stepping stone to becoming a citizen. - Anika Malone
Any attempt to continue the notion of "nations" is doomed to failure just as much as a few centuries ago the notion of "kingdom" was doomed. Open all the borders, stop pretending people are separate in ways they are not to make them more easily manageable. - Neal Jansons
"No Mr. Garrison, we can not get rid of the Mexicans" - South Park. - Wizetux
Man I wish people would stop calling people illegal. It's a dumb term. Likewise, illegal workers is a stupid term. How can working be illegal? Silly government. If you really hate immigrants make them legal tax-paying workers and let them participate in the broken state like the "legal" workers. - Jason Nunnelley
It's not a dumb term. It's a legal one. They are here illegally. They are breaking US laws. They cannot legally work while here, so if they do work, again, they are breaking the law. If you don't like the laws push to have them changed. - Alex Scoble
@Alex. Unless they take someone else Social Security number, then the real owner is responsible for that income on their federal taxes. - Wizetux
Jason thats interesting. I use the term illegal immigrants because "alien" is overloaded and and the immigrants have not gone through the legal immigration procedure. - EricaJoy via IM
Don't be dense...no one is saying the people themselves are illegal, as in their existence is outlawed. The whole "no person is illegal" is a linguistic red herring designed to avoid the issue that, no matter how complex the situation from a social viewpoint, from the legal POV it is simple: they are breaking the law by being here because they didn't or couldn't follow the due process for legal entry. - Neal Jansons via IM
Alex, in fairness it's not a legal term. It's a political term wrangled from a legal definition. They are undocumented, perhaps have expired visas, and their travel may have been in violation of the law. It sounds ominous to call them "illegal immigrants," like being here is something they did in offense to the state that conspired with big business to ease restrictions on undocumented workers in the US. - Jason Nunnelley
Say the laws are wrong-headed, but don't pretend that means they aren't laws and they aren't being broken. Even argue that civil disobedience of such a law is justified. But to try to claim they did not commit a crime is to lie. - Neal Jansons via IM
However you put it, they are here illegally and are breaking laws simply by existing in this country. For better or worse that's the situation. - Alex Scoble
Neal, yes I think the laws are wrong-headed. They're also designed to be broken. It's a bigger and quite OT discussion, but the US government watches the undocumented stats and loosens border control when labor falls to a certain level. Right now we have massive unemployment so the government would like to ship the second class work force back home so our natural born citizens can find work. - Jason Nunnelley
Now that we have fully stated the problem, how about a solution? - Wizetux
"The US government watches the undocumented stats and loosens border control when labor falls to a certain level." Really? I'd like to read more about that. Got a link? - EricaJoy via IM
Alex, I'd respect the laws more if the government didn't encourage this behavior. Even the government of Mexico openly encourages undocumented travel to the US for labor trade. They have government printed pamphlets. - Jason Nunnelley
Jason, I'm sorry, but until I see evidence of such a conspiracy it seems far-fetched. Government does very little effectively, why does everyone seem to think they are capable of such Luthor like conspiracies and plans? - Neal Jansons via IM
EricaJoy, I'll check to see if that's publicly documented. It's a secret court that convenes, similar to FISA. Only FISA isn't secret anymore. - Jason Nunnelley
I didn't say the laws needed to be respected, but they do exist. - Alex Scoble
Alex, I'm just saying let's not castigate good hard-working people for committing the crime of working for money. Call them what they are: undocumented labor, undocumented immigrants. I assure you they're mostly just decent people doing what we encourage them to do, as a society. - Jason Nunnelley
Ok so naming conventions aside, supporting immigrants who unlawfully entered California costs the state $5B per year. How do we fix that? - EricaJoy via IM
EricaJoy, stop funding the welfare state? - Jason Nunnelley
Elaborate? - EricaJoy via IM
EricaJoy, you've two options: 1) physically remove anyone that doesn't fit our definition of a useful citizen (and you're farmers will hate you); 2) Deal with the systems which are abused and figure out why they don't benefit the general welfare of the state. If you need immigrant labor, and you want healthy people, then these services are just part of the trade for cheap labor. If you... more... - Jason Nunnelley
I made no judgments on the personal qualities of the people who are here illegally. It's not a crime like rape or theft. Most of these people are here because they want a better life and are willing to work for it (whereas there's often no way for them to do so in their home countries). The best way to get rid of them, if that is our goal, is to destroy our economy to the point where it's no longer seen as a place worth dying to get in to. - Alex Scoble
Alex, I think I kind of know your personality well enough to know you're not a bigot. But, that term is often used by people with whom you wouldn't want to associate. I'm too close to that kind of redneck myself not to be sensitive, so I just complained about the term. It's politically loaded. - Jason Nunnelley
People like me and bigots alike can get together on my plan. If you really want to screw the undocumented worker, make him legit. Give him a real SSI number and let him just work for money like the rest of us. Social programs are a different problem. EricaJoy's concern won't be handled without addressing that different, though tangential problem. - Jason Nunnelley
I don't think that would screw them, I'm also not sure (for a number of reasons that have been talked about above) that there's the political will to do that. Because the unintended consequence of a real foreign worker program, which would also include enforcement of minimum wage, would be higher costs of a range of goods and services in this country. - Alex Scoble
