"Many of us would probably agree that women have done some amazing things while wearing high heels: Holding high-level political offices, running corporations, even deadlifting big weights, which you will see in a second. While heels undoubtedly can be visually appealing, and can simultaneously give an air of sexuality and power, what exactly is happening to the feet, ankles, shins and calves of the wearer? Let's see what the research says"

So my running and my workout regime has been going strong for 6 weeks now. For the last 4 days I've been feeling more and more blah. Then I realized this is that point I get to. The point in which I start to lose interest and just get plain ol' tired. Debating how I want to work through this so that I still maintain my positive trajectory.
Sometimes a change of pace to make the routine feel less banal helps get past this point. Are there alternative forms of working out that you can try?
- Hookuh Tinypants
Yeah I can change it up here and there, different classes or try swimming.
- Just Kidée: Road Warrior
Swimming works. You suddenly find muscles you didn't know you had.
- Johnny
If you're working out in the evening switch to the morning or vice versa. That could help. Don't give up! x
- LoisMarketing
Oooooh, swimming is epic. :D I wanted to join city swim but they don't offer lap swim at reasonable times so I'm waiting for the beginning-of-year wackos to clear out of the Gold's Gym by my house so I can sign up and use their lap pool.
- Hookuh Tinypants
Yeah I just checked mine and the times aren't conducive to my schedule :(
- Just Kidée: Road Warrior
Yours is probably like mine...they offer lap swim in the middle of the morning, like 9am...and then at 7 or 8pm. Bleh.
- Hookuh Tinypants
Yup and I can't make either. Though my community center is saying in March a Barre class will start
- Just Kidée: Road Warrior
Yes and Kettlebells and a Bosu and strength training cords and jump ropes. Problem with home workouts is when I get home, I'm home. And I'm done. Hence the gym membership and the running group to motivate me to go out.
- Just Kidée: Road Warrior
To battle the 6 week malaise I tend to get, I signed up for my first personal training session The Guy bought me for Christmas. I go Wednesday night

"As I got closer to my goal of a lean, fit body though, something started to change. I began to realize how much time I spend thinking about my diet and my workouts. Don’t get me wrong. In our modern food climate, we need to be diligent and mindful about what we eat, and our lifestyles have become so sedentary and easy that we need to make time to get the exercise that was a built-in component of our ancestors lives. But as I got leaner, I needed to become increasingly disciplined about calories and macronutrients. At some point I realized I’d gone beyond simple mindfulness about food, and had ventured into the sort of behavior that some people might consider an eating disorder. Every calorie, every gram of protein, every micronutrient was being tracked. That’s what I needed to do to continue getting leaner. But oh, did I look great! Do I want my daughters to grow up healthy and strong? Absolutely. Do I want them to feel pressured to be as disciplined about their diets as I am? Absolutely not."

Our local fitness center is offering a 2 hour Body Blast workout the morning of Thanksgiving. Being the fitness junkie I've become, I instantly jumped on it and scheduled to go. Not long after, my sister, cousin and The Guy all chimed in. I LOVE these people! #workitout#FARP
Exhausted. Ran Monday morning then followed with a strength training class Monday night. Yesterday I ran again in the morning then followed with a run with my sister after work. Two double days...Whew...Taking today off to recover and rest. #kickingass#takingnames#roadwarrior
Signed up for a 12k (7.4m) trail race in October in the Limestone Canyon in Irvine. I'm kinda excited and a little terrified. It'll be the longest distance I've raced before but I can't wait to run through this beautiful area. #12in2012#trailrunning - http://www.irlandmarks.org/Explore...
Thanks. I've been slacking since my last race sucked so hard. I'm trying to motivate myself again

go Katie! I am supposed to have my first since last fall on Sunday, and I have been coughing and hacking my way through allergies for almost two weeks. yeah, this'll be a good run. good luck to you! :)
- holly #ravingfangirl
Thanks Holly, hope the allergies subside. Around here many allergy sufferers are saying it's the worst allergy season so far :(

"If you think kettlebells are just glorified dumbbells, keep reading. "A kettlebell's center of gravity actually shifts during the course of the exercise," says Jason C. Brown, C.S.C.S., owner of Kettlebell Athletics, in Philadelphia. In that way, it's like many of the objects you lift everyday -- briefcase, milk gallon, unruly toddler -- and repeated use provides much the same benefit: Functional, real world strength."

"You know that exercise is good for your body and is essential to your overall health, but did you know it can actually make you smarter, as well? We've mentioned the topic in brief before, but new research shows that it's not a cause and effect relationship, that exercise makes you smarter—it's that exercise is the reason you're smart. That means that regular activity is essential to staying sharp and getting smarter, perhaps even more-so than stimulating cognitive activities are."

"Athletes of all kinds, from cyclists to skiers, benefit from strong legs. Toned legs not only look good, but they can help prevent injuries too. This dynamic yoga sequence flows between basic standing poses targeting your legs and booty while working your core and arms too. Complete all nine poses on the right side first, and then repeat on the left."

"If I had to guess, I'd estimate that for every person who has been weight training and getting good results, there's probably about 50 other people whose results absolutely suck. Some will give it a try for a certain period of time, get no where, and then give up for good. Others will do the same, only they'll periodically try again, get the same sucky results, and quit only to repeat this all over again every few months or years (or annually as part of their New Year's Resolution). The rest have all of the dedication in the world and will never give up. Instead, they'll consistently get virtually no where... forever."

"So ladies, what should you be doing in the gym? You should be working out like a guy who wants to gain 100lbs of muscle and be able to pick up cars and throw them down the street with their bare hands. Alright, that's a bit extreme, but I'm just trying to make a point. You need to push yourself (safely, of course). You need to challenge your body. You need to do more than pick up the...

I know I bulk up quickly so I do better doing more reps with lighter weights.
- Shevonne
YAY!!! As a reward for all my hard work over the last 14 months to get half way to my goal, I finally went out and got myself a belly dancing scarf! I still jiggle a little when I walk but now I also jingle!!!
Tonight my Zumba instructor notified us that she won't be teaching Tuesday nights anymore. You can imagine my :( because the other Zumba class is so impacted I've stopped going to that location. Plus I liked this teacher. Thinking of dropping this class and picking up a running day or a weight training day instead.
"Since May, Drew Manning has gained about 70 pounds on purpose. And he’s not done yet. Drew is a personal trainer and has always been the “fit guy.” He’s now on a journey he calls Fit 2 Fat 2 Fit where he spends six months (he has about 4 weeks left) eating unhealthy food and not exercising, then he will take six more months to get fit again. Why? To experience for himself what it’s like to be overweight, how tough it is to lose weight, and ultimately show others how to get fit. But this is sooo extreme! And I hate that Drew is deliberately making himself unhealthy"

Not to mention that once a fat cell is created, it never goes away (unless you liposuction that shit out). So he will always have a lot of hungry, pissed-off fat cells hanging out, waiting for him to slip. This is kind of silly.
- Hookuh Tinypants
this is gonna be really really hard on his body. harder than what he did to get so fit in the first place. he may never fully recover, in fact.
- Joe Silence
I'm also curious as to how it goes but there is also an "ick" factor about it. It was interesting to read him acknowledge the feeling of food addiction and how real it is. I'll be curious to watch the second half as he loses the weight.
- Just Kidée: Road Warrior
I actually admire that he's willing to do it. That's a pretty serious commitment to cultivating empathy with his clients.
- Spidra Webster
I'm kinda stoked. A dress I bought way back in Feb or March fits much better now! I may even have to take it in to get it tailored a bit since it's loose in the straps! I hope to wear it to the symphony in December. #FARP#winning
"We're live at Motorola's event in New York, where Sanjay Jha just announced a pretty broad leap into the fitness space with MOTOACTV. It's a 46mm square Android-powered device that in addition to tracking your fitness regiment with its own website also serves as an MP3 player. The big plus, though, is that it's entirely wireless. Headphones, heart-rate tracker. No wires. And, yes, it looks like an iPod Nano with buttons."

I'm curious to see how to develops. I use a heart rate monitor (when it's working) and my phone to log my miles and play my music so I'm gadget loaded when I take off. It'd be nice to have a reliable HRM with a good GPS mile tracker that also plays music.
- Just Kidée: Road Warrior
Whoa awesome. Yeah, the heart rate monitor is the key component for me.
- Rodfather
I didn't see any more info, I'll have to google it but I'm interested to know if it's monitored by a chest strap like the Polar I use and if not, how will they get the heart rate data.
- Just Kidée: Road Warrior
The HRM I use with my Garmin 305 syncs with the device. This also has GPS so it seem like the best of all worlds: GPS, HRM and music player. EDIT: It probably uses a chest strap but could do it from your wrist as well.
- Curtis (a) Jackson
Yeah weird. Maybe bluetooth with the headset.
- Rodfather
I just read and I think it's probably not for me. It's mostly for riding and running. I use my Polar for my aerobics and weight training classes too. Probably wouldn't track those well
- Just Kidée: Road Warrior
It doesn't say anything about tracking the heart rate through the wrist. Maybe it's only tracked from the ear.
- Rodfather
"The SF700 (optional) is a Bluetooth® heart rate monitor and sports headphones. Its built-in ear sensor detects your heart rate without the uncomfortable chest-strap squeeze. Heart rate data is audible and also transmitted to your MOTOACTV device. And it's sweat resistant so you can power through the toughest workouts."
- Just Kidée: Road Warrior
My first one was the Polar F6, it was great and did just what I needed. But the chest strap didn't allow for the battery to be changed and you had to send it in to Polar to get it fixed. After 3 years, I decided to upgrade and got the FT40. But the chest strap is the newer version and I think it's going bad. I'm going to try to just change the batter but if it doesn't improve, I may need a whole new one
- Just Kidée: Road Warrior
Looks like there's bluetooth HRM chest straps. By Polar and Zephyr. http://www.amazon.com/Zephyr-.... Works with Android phones but not iOS devices since they don't have the required Bluetooth stack.
- Rodfather
Yeah I think my chest strap can do Bluetooth but it doesn't transmit properly and that's the chest strap's issue.
- Just Kidée: Road Warrior
You go, girl! Awesome job. Slow and steady is the way to keep it off. :)
- Curtis (a) Jackson
It took a year to drop that first 10 lbs. So to drop another two is wonderful. I'm in no hurry just happy to be healthier :)
- Just Kidée: Road Warrior
Too much time off from the gym and too much eating/drinking/enjoying life. I'm weak and pretty much need to start over from scratch.
- Just Kidée: Road Warrior
Trying to set up some schedule where we go from school to karate and then to the gym. I have a 6 month free pass to the Y and they have free child care so my preference is to go there.
- Just Kidée: Road Warrior
There is a 5k in Irvine at the end of August that runs through WetnWild: http://www.active.com/running... I promised myself no more races till allergy season is gone and done but.....this just looks like so much fun!
Damn, this is only the 2nd time this race is being run. I was trying not to sign up for newish races after that last two being horribly unorganized due to not having many races under their belts.
