"Back in August upon the launch of Apple's Snow Leopard we delivered benchmarks comparing Mac OS X 10.5 and Mac OS X 10.6 along with initial benchmarks of how Ubuntu 9.10 was running against Mac OS X 10.6. Since that time though Ubuntu 9.10 has been officially released with various changes since last August and Apple has issued two point releases for Snow Leopard, now putting it at version 10.6.2. As we await the release of FreeBSD 8.0 to deliver a larger operating system comparison, we have carried out a fresh round of tests comparing Mac OS X 10.6.2 and Ubuntu 9.10 (both x86 and x86_64 editions) under a variety of tests."

There’s been some buzz today based on a post by Nicholas D. Kristof at the New York Times suggesting that Bing filters results for searches conducted outside of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) using Simplified Chinese characters for their query. As Mr. Kristof reported over the summer, we did fix a bug in web search that addressed this issue. There are some queries that provide very balanced web results, for example 六四 天安门 (June 4th Tiananmen). We recognize that we can continue to improve our relevancy and comprehensiveness in these web results and we will. In addition, today’s investigations uncovered the fact that our image search is not functioning properly for queries entered using Simplified Chinese characters outside of the PRC. We have identified the bug and are at work on the fix. We expect to have this done before the Thanksgiving holiday. Bing’s intent for these types of queries is to provide relevant and comprehensive results for our customers. We appreciate the dialog...

I have never been one to wake up the morning after Thanksgiving to go and wait in a line at the mall for those crazy holiday shopping deals. As much as I have thought about it, the idea of sitting outside at 2AM in the freezing cold still trying to wake up from my Thanksgiving dinner food coma never really sounded that pleasing. Well things have certainly changed. Now I can take advantage of some great holiday savings right from the comfort of my very own home. Starting on November 27, Bing cashback will be offering increased discounts at a select number of merchants. There will be some pretty attractive savings at retailers like Macy’s, Home Depot, Dell, and many more. So Friday morning after you have had your first of many leftover thanksgiving sandwiches, don’t worry about getting ready to go to the mall, just grab a laptop, a cup of coffee, your wallet, and a seat on your favorite couch and start your holiday shopping! Make sure you are following the Bing cashback team on Twitter...

I am sitting here in the office wondering why the hallways are so quiet and it dawns on me….Stefan is not here. Which means two things, I can work without listening to him rock out to early 90’s greatest hits and that he is not here for me to film him for #FTF. So sadly all you get today is a short post from me. Which is actually not all that bad since today we actually have five SIGNED NFL practice jersey’s from some of the top players of the Seattle Seahawks to give away with the ever so coveted Bing t-shirts. Here are some of us from the office modeling the jerseys that we have to giveaway: Matt Hasselbeck #8 , Julius Jones #22, Lofa Tatupu #51, Nate Burleson #81, T.J. Houshmandzadeh #84 For this week’s #FTF you have to follow the rules correctly. You need to tweet us a link to a search result (See sunnyopen’s example below) to @bing, include #FTF and @bing in your tweet, and your search result must be relevant to this week’s theme. Also, please include if you have a preference of...

Great news. All the new features we blogged about last week are live for 100% of our users. Many of you may have seen them over the past few days as the ramp progressed, but now everyone can take full advantage of the great work the team has done in this fall wave for Bing. I wanted to point that out because recently, to my complete surprise, I was told that all of you don’t follow every single one of Bing’s developments with breathless abandon. I had simply assumed that all of you had alerts on this blog complete with a hacked-up method of automatically sending texts to your mobile devices whenever some nugget of search wisdom materializes on the blog. Apparently I was wrong. My wife drove this point home to me a few weeks ago when grilling me about just exactly it is that I do at work all day. I stared at her dumbly – more so than usual – and said, “you know, I work on Bing! All those new features we’ve launched since June that map to those unmet customer needs you always hear me...

"The social media data company Rapleaf has just released the final parts of their 3-part study involving the demographics and online behavior of webmail users. In the first part of the study, gender and age data was examined and revealed some interesting findings...like the fact that Gmail has more female users than male, for example. In the final sections of the study, the company has turned its attention to social networking data to discover more details about webmail users' social media profiles, memberships and network preferences."

"The Practice of Everyday Design is a new partnership founded in 2009 with a focus on installation art, product design, and architecture. The Practice is committed to the merging of seemingly irreconcilable ideas to form new design opportunities. The practice is not afraid of pushing the boundaries of convention, the status quo, or the constraints imposed by current technologies. Ideas emerge from the desire to reevaluate the banality of the everyday and reinvent them to create innovative and playful designs. Using art as a means to investigate process and design — there is no clear boundary between their design practice and their art pieces. Check it out."

With just 38 days left until Christmas, I’m sure I’m one of many who is frantically making shopping lists, planning trips to the mall, and researching the hottest toys and deals for the season. (Please visit the site to view this media) Luckily Bing cashback continues to welcome new retailers to make it easier for all of us to get our shopping done, including Macy’s, and you know what they say “everything’s better at Macy’s”. And right now you can get 5% off any purchase from Macys.com when you buy through Bing cashback. (Please visit the site to view this media) For those on your list that are hard to shop for/have everything already, head to Bing cashback to get 5% off your Home Depot purchases, including gift cards. Maybe I’ll get my father-in-law one of those new auto-hammers (and I may need to pick up one of those inflatable snow globes for my own front yard too). We have also just welcomed GSI Commerce to the Bing cashback program. GSI is an e-commerce provider for hundreds of...
