FriendFeed API v2: Real-time, OAuth, file attachments, and more - http://blog.friendfeed.com/2009...
FriendFeed API v2: Real-time, OAuth, file attachments, and more
"Today we are launching version 2 of the FriendFeed API for beta testing. We focused on making the API simpler to use, and we added number of compelling new features." Documentation: http://friendfeed.com/api... - Bret Taylor from Bookmarklet
OAuth? Sweet. Thanks a lot for all the new good stuff in the API: can't wait to use it. - Mark Trapp
very nice. great work! - Alfredo 亜瑠布れっど
Yet another reason to like Bret. :-) - Jesse Stay
Great!!! - YungSang from FriendFoo
nice! - Daniel Rust
good job guys, I bet devs are jumping high right now - Dobromir Hadzhiev
Sweet, congrats! - Ivan Zuzak
nice, good to see OAuth support, this will enable a larger 3rd party ecosphere around FriendFeed, I hope - Jeroen De Miranda
After going through the documentation and playing around with some feeds, I love the fact that you can now see the subscriber lists of people who have their feeds set to private as long as you are subscribed to them and authenticate (mimicking the main site functionality). One thing that's absent is a discussion of Direct Messages. Do they show up in feeds if you authenticate? How do we find just direct messages? - Mark Trapp
Mark: direct messages are accessed using the feed ID "filter/direct". Read more about feed IDs at http://friendfeed.com/api.... Also direct messages appear in the "home" feed. - Benjamin Golub
Benjamin: ahhh, I see it now. I missed it when skimming that list over. Thanks! - Mark Trapp
Can you post the wget version of the command line? - Gabe
Gabe: wget --user=bgolub --password=passwd --post-file=MyPhoto.jpg http://friendfeed-api.com/v2... should work. In theory. Edit: nope. I'm not sure it's possible to do with wget. - Mark Trapp
Thanks God it is New API. - AlpB. from iPod
Nice progress here with this release! - Micah
I love it! - friday night
Why is wget questionable? - Gabe
Gabe: wget doesn't support multipart forms as a design decision. If you post a file, FriendFeed returns a 404, and if you post data, the query is too long for wget to handle. - Mark Trapp
Good work, look forward to seeing what developers can create - Joe Dawson
doublepluslike - Vezquex
curl FTW. - Jeremy Kunz
This is great, FriendFeed team. Good job. - Thierry R. Andriamirado
Woowoo, bgolub's password is “passwd” ;-) - Amit Patel
Amit: I wonder how many people tested that :) - Benjamin Golub
Thanks to bgolub posting his password, I now have all of FriendFeed's secret documents about notorious users, useless metrics, Justin Timberlake's promoting FF on Oprah's show, hiring Colbert as a spokesperson, Ev Williams being just a “distraction”. TechCrunch is going to love this! ;) - Amit Patel
Yes big big thanks to the whole team for all their hard work!! - ɐ ɯıʞ sıɹɥɔ from iPhone
thank you;) waiting for the release :) loving clone - abdellah from FriendFeed API Example
Yay subscribers exposed! - EricaJoy
Finally OAuth, I had a hard time memorizing my remote key. - Hugh Isaacs II
This is indeed very cool, anybody started on a c# version? - Jesper Lind

LOL, Soup! - Kol Tregaskes
Too Funny! Reminds me of the San Mateo Cat Shelter where one of the cats loves to sleep on top of the laster printer where the paper comes out... - Greg Lato

@Kol .. :] that, partially, might have been the purpose.... I don't know it exactly either. :] .. was I reflecting on a cat under the fax, and that it is hard to fax that way ... /?:] ... "underfaxing at its worst" .. - pb:
Ah, OK, Petr. :-) - Kol Tregaskes

Just 5 more likes needed. ;-) - Kol Tregaskes
Fax, Petr. :-) - Kol Tregaskes
even a flat cat... faxes just can't handle the hair. You'd have to shave the cat first, else the hair will burn and stick to the drum... a mess! (I am extrapolating from transparencies, mind, i don't have access to a cat to test) - Iphigenie
Hehe, Joelle. This is now tied for the 'likes' top stop. One more then, hehe. :-) - Kol Tregaskes
Hehe, Greg. Blimey! Erm, is that not far from 500 likes now? ;-) - Kol Tregaskes

Am I the only one who saw this and their first thought was - My goodness did someone break that cats neck? It still freaks me out a little - Steve C
Steve, it does look a little out of place, but cats are pretty bendy. ;-) - Kol Tregaskes
They fax much better if you flatten them first. What? - Kevin (aka ThreadKilla)
LOL, Kevin. - Kol Tregaskes

Unladen Swallow :: Python 3’s Best Feature . [forthcoming PEP]
"PEP is coming, proposing Unladen Swallow [see http://ff.im/90Fhc for details] be merged back to Python-core – specifically, the Python 3k branch. Yeah, that’s right – a PEP to merge Unladen Swallow back into the mothership, but to Py3k only. The PEP should go out for review soon, probably within the next two weeks – and more details/information will be coming out at PyCon in February." - Adriano from Bookmarklet
At the moment it is slower and uses 2x RAM... Dependency on LLVM adds maintenance complexity and ruins control over toolset stack. Will merging into Py3k pay out? Will it drive library migrations into Py3k? - Myroslav Opyr

Google to Add Social Features to Gmail - http://www.nytimes.com/2010...
"Later this week, Google will unveil add-ons to Gmail that let people post and view messages about their day-to-day activities, according to a person at Google briefed on the company’s plans. This simple tweak to Gmail will let Google mimic the status updates that have driven much of Facebook and Twitter’s success, as people return to the services again and again to check out what their friends and co-workers are doing." - Paul Buchheit from Bookmarklet
There's so much Buzz in this area... - Paul Buchheit
Apparently it's being announced tomorrow at 10am: http://www.readwriteweb.com/archive... - Paul Buchheit
This would be extremely difficult to get right. Making the assumption that correspondents (even frequent correspondents) equate to a privacy-relaxed social circle would be a mistake. I hope they have something more elegant than a manual 'block this person from seeing my posts' mechanism. I'm looking forward to seeing what it is. - Kevin Fox
great. all we needed. yet another Productivity Killer. Which reminds me how dead is Google Wave? - Nikos Kouremenos
Wave is not dead. It's a completely separate team from Gmail. - Paul Buchheit
Nikos might mean the activity on his own Wave account. I logged in to Wave last Tuesday and found that of the 100 or so of my friend who gave Wave a try, none of them seem to be doing anything anymore (at least that they add me to). I'm sure it's thriving in some small circles, and perhaps that's what it's intended for, but I haven't seen any general uptake. - Kevin Fox
That's cool - Xitong Liu
Wave on Chrome is probably 5x faster than it was 2 months ago. I just noticed that last week. That means for the first time I can use it for real work. - Daniel Dulitz
Wave is not a social network, and was never intended to be one, afaict. It is an incredibly useful tool for groups (work or otherwise) to stay in sync, have complex discussions, build design docs, etc., where giant email threads tend to turn into clusterfscks. @Daniel: Yeah, I notice they seem to have pushed on-demand wave rendering, which has made a huge difference in performance. - Joel Webber
Wave just hurts my head. It feels like they overreached without anyone pushing them back on the usability front. - Kevin Fox
Wave is a great alternative to mailing lists for developers to collaborate. I'm not sure it's a replacement for social aspects of email, it's more a replacement for work-aspects of email. - Ray Cromwell
I agree with Kevin, this will be VERY difficult to get right.. I haven't been impressed with Google's social features to date.. they seem more like an after thought added as a disjoint layer than a solution. If Google Reader's comments and contact/group mechanism is any example it will be a nightmare. Friend Connect is missing some very basic functionality that makes it a non-starter out of the gate. I hope they get this one right!! - Chris Myles
Yup. As I mentioned though, *how* you define that list will be important. FB, Twitter and other social sites let you grab your Google contact list and checkmark which ones you want to add to your social circle. Can Google do something smarter than a fully manual opt-in process? I'm just looking forward to their take on the problem. - Kevin Fox
Gary, that works for privacy during *broadcast* but not during conversation. For example in Reader the person who shares the post determines who gets to see it's comments. If I want to add to a conversation and share the same comment with my friends (and guarantee they'll see it) I have to duplicate the comment and add it to my own share. That's not easy or social !! - Chris Myles
Seems to me like the Gmail team is borrowing some ideas from the Wave team more than it does an effort to transition Gmail into being a Facebook or Twitter clone. I'm looking forward to seeing how it will work. - Mark Davidson from BuddyFeed
Most importantly, how will it work for people who don't use Gmail? Email is (more or less) zero-sum. You're not going to get people to change their email client and email address just to have access to the social features their friends might be using on Gmail. There would need to be a "Gmail+Social-Gmail" experience for people who have friends that use Gmail as a social network but who don't use Gmail themselves. - Kevin Fox
This could be the place you're looking for, Kevin http://www.google.com/s2... (by the way, does anyone know why Google still show services here http://www.google.com/s2... that have been disconnected from Friendfeed months - if not years - ago?) - Jérôme
That's a pretty cool page, Jerome! I hadn't seen that one before. - Kevin Fox
Kevin have you seen Google's social graph API (http://code.google.com/apis...)? I think Jerome's link combines contacts and the social graph API.. - Chris Myles
Links overload here: 246+ direct, 629 secondary connections. - Jérôme
Social graph API applied to Kevin: here are all his followers http://socialgraph-resources.g... - Jérôme

Also, not bothered about the 3G version as I'd rather buy a mifi and use that saving myself cash and letting more devices access the net on the go ;) - alphaxion

It would be cool if I could get a mifi-type device with a $15/30 per month no-contract billing option. That would make all of these devices tempting. - Daniel J. Pritchett
here in the UK 3 offer a mifi with a 1 month rolling contract, 5Gb per month limit with £40 up front for the mifi or a pay as you go mifi for £70 up front - alphaxion
That sounds sweet alpha, I think here it's like $60/mo. with a long-term contract. Let me double-check that. Edit: Looks like the minimum mifi contract is $40/mo. for 250MB and it doesn't say how long the contract lasts. http://www.verizonwireless.com/b2c... - Daniel J. Pritchett

is there no way of buying the low end model and adding in an sdxc card to bump it up to 64GB? Having no camera is ridiculous and as usual you are locked into the apple ecosystem. Once again you either love the way they do things or you don't. It will be a popular device, but I'm always amazed at how many people are quite happy with Apple's walled garden. This is what killed them in the... more... - Phil Ashman

hmm... it also doesn't look like it supports multiple user profiles and it's *still* tethered to a single machine with itunes. - alphaxion

"A year head start." Imagine what that actually means given the speed of innovation. - Cliff Gerrish
@amyloo PDF is less than HTML - paginated, inflexible, proprietary - Kevin Marks
ASUS CEO-Shih thinks it would be premature to release a tablet today and predicts the devices will not be successful until there are easily accessible online stores of books, music, videos, games and other content tailored to the form factor. Check out this beautiful 360 Aerial Panorama of New York. You need to have QuickTime to view it, but if you want the best quality use the plug-in on the site. It’s amazing with the plug-in loaded! http://www.pixelcase.com.au/vr...

is there a link to the orig? I think the FF image is static - Keith - @tsudo
OK, it should be up! - Michael Fidler
Let me know if it works. I think the best view is from Governors Island or the from Downtown with the view pointing up. - Michael Fidler
Over-the-top amazing! - Rob Michael (Atmos Trio)
Awesome. Like taking the helicopter ride I've been too cheap to pay for... - Mitchell Tsai
Here's another one of London. Amazing! http://bit.ly/qjf6M - Michael Fidler
Here's an amazing one. I just let it go, rather than control it; http://www.pixelcase.com.au/vr... - Michael Fidler
It appears the plug-in is no longer necessary. I'm running it in Chrome without one. - Michael Fidler
That is pretty amazing. - Son of Groucho
Nice! - Kol Tregaskes
This is awesome. - Mark Krynsky
The viewer appears to be Flash not Quicktime, - Brian Sullivan
Brian, they changed it since this was first posted back in May. It used to require a VR plug-in which worked with QuickTime, but now it doesn't require anything, However, it looks just as good as before. The images are truly amazing! - Michael Fidler
New York, New York!!! - Myrna
Michael - didn't notice the post date-- "Doesn't require anything" -- Flash must be installed so something is required. The Flash viewer seems to crash a lot though (or at least in Chrome) -- still a great pano. I wonder how it was done -- from a helicopter no doubt but beyond it would be a mystery. - Brian Sullivan
I just tried it in Chrome and recommend Firefox instead. It didn't crash on me in Chrome, but it didn't run smoothly either. - Michael Fidler
Brian, I would love to know how these are made. I know some are done from a helicopter, but if you check out the one from Downtown, it's clearly stationary. I can't even see the reflection of the camera in the building windows when it's turned around 180 degrees. I've posted links to others above. I wonder if I should repost this to a room and if so which one? - Michael Fidler
Here's the link for Sydney http://bit.ly/aFFbZ and I'll grab a few more. - Michael Fidler
I know generally how to make these 360 panos but the only technique I know is shooting from a tripod where you have control of the leveling of the camera and control of the angle of shooting. You have to manipulate out the tripod out of the picture after shooting -- these I have no idea, http://radio.weblogs.com/0127028... is a QTVR one of my living room - Brian Sullivan
All the fisheye does is cut down on the number of shots you need to take -- if it goes 180 in both directions two shots are nominally sufficient on a full frame camera - usually 3 though but that is only if all are shot with the same horizon and with precise angular placement. How you control this in a moving helicopter is beyond me. Maybe more than one camera ? In shots like these where parallax is less of a problem maybe that is the method used - Brian Sullivan
This must be shot completely differently than a stationary panoramic. I'm familiar with the 8 shot method, but the camera needs to be on a tripod as Brian mentioned. If you watch these images load slowly, they look like plates. It sort of reminds me of photosynth, but connected somehow. Now, I really want to find out how it's done. - Michael Fidler
I think regular stationary panoramas are loaded as "plates" (at least you export them that way to edit them) as well so I am not sure that is a clue as to how they were generated. - Brian Sullivan
If I email them, do you think they'll answer? Hi, I was just curious; what’s your secret? You never know. It might be worth a try:) - Michael Fidler
Here's one of U2 (on one of their smaller tours), and I don't think they had a helicopter with them to shoot it. http://www.pixelcase.com.au/vr... - Michael Fidler
That one is done from a tripod or monopod of some type it appears -- you can see if you look down the footprint has the logo on it. - Brian Sullivan
Ya, I noticed one that had the logo above it. May they use it when photoshop doesn't do the job perfectly. - Michael Fidler
Logos like that are used to hide the footprint of the tripod or other -- sometimes it can be a lot of work create a shot to cover the spot (or to fill it in using a bitmap editor) so it is just masked. - Brian Sullivan
OK, check out this one http://www.pixelcase.com.au/vr... and go into planet view. It's the P next to the directional controls. I wonder if that has something to do with it. Shot off a reflective globe maybe. - Michael Fidler
Michael: So you like "Little Planets"? :) http://www.flickr.com/search... - Holger Eilhard
The "P" gets you the "polar view" -- a standard view that can be created from any 360/180 panorama so that is not a clue as to how it is done either from what I can determine (http://www.flickr.com/groups... is a flickr group dedicated to such polar views) - Brian Sullivan
I've seen them many times before and wondered how they were made, too. This guy has some examples and apparently he uses a 10.5mm lens and then maps them into shape: http://www.flickr.com/photos... - Michael Fidler
STUPENDO! Io ci torno il 18 Settembre - PICCHU
Yes the 10.5 is a Nikon fisheye lens -- I use a Peleng 8mm fully manual fisheye -- more suited to my budget. When shooting with tripod you need a parallax correction jig as well -- I use the Nodal Ninja -- which is a reasonable quality low end device. - Brian Sullivan
I was on the Hugin site a few months ago and I found a video that demonstrates how to use the jig. It didn't mention helicopter shots though. In fact, the video was very particular about not having any movement. I think it's time to ask them. - Michael Fidler
Yeah I have seen a number of these panoramas that seem to defy logic. Peter Murphy (who is a pioneer in this type of stuff) has a number of puzzling ones - http://www.mediavr.com/manlyai... (needs Quick time) for example. His weblog has tons of others as well _http://www.mediavr.com/blog/ - Brian Sullivan
@briansullivan I went to an event last night where I came across something that might explain how these are done. If you check out the picture I shot of the equipment; it uses a reflective dome to capture the entire shot all at once and then processes it almost instantly afterwards. http://bit.ly/qD0dn . It basically comes out looking like a globe or a planet before it is processed. Once processed it look like a full panoramic just like the ones here, but in lower resolution. - Michael Fidler
I haven’t seen the digital version yet, but the guy who owns this company told me they would be much sharper than the prints which they give out at the event. I also asked him about the helicopter shots, and he wasn’t sure about compensating for movement, but he didn’t see it as a big problem either. Mystery solved? - Michael Fidler
I don't see this lens/device as "the" answer. Other similar devices have a reputation for low optical quality and low resolution. Peter Murphy almost certainly does not use such a lens. No serious panorama photographer that I have heard of uses anything like this. - Brian Sullivan
I guess the search for an answer continues... - Michael Fidler
Hi - I own Pixelcase and shot the tour of Sydney aswell as all development. Glad you like my work. - pixelcase
Thank you, I'm glad you found this. I love your work. Based on the number of likes and comments for this post, I think it’s safe to say, I’m not the only one. It would be nice if you could enlighten us with some details about how these are made. - Michael Fidler
Here's a link to pixelcase's newest and IMHO best work of Melbourne http://ff.im/eBJZn - Michael Fidler

Malaysia - Cheong Fatt Tze "Blue" Mansion in Penang
© Lucie's Photography / www.luciedebelkova.com posted a photo: Penang (Malay: Pulau Pinang, Chinese: 槟城/檳城, Chinese: 槟榔屿/檳榔嶼) is a state in Malaysia, located on the northwest coast of Peninsular Malaysia by the Strait of Malacca. Penang is the second smallest state in Malaysia after Perlis, and the eighth most populous. The 110 year old Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion is located in George Town, Penang. The most unique feature of this Chinese courtyard mansion is its original indigo-blue paint. It has 38 rooms, 5 granite-paved courtyards, 7 staircases & 220 vernacular timber louvre windows. It won the UNESCO's Asia-Pacific Heritage 2000 Award for Conservation. The distinctive blue colour of the mansion is the result of mixing lime with natural blue dye made from the Indigo plant. The blue was very popular in the Colonial period and the dye was imported from India. The lime wash was very effective in a tropical weather as it absorbed moisture and cooled the house. However the blue is a colour...

There was a lot of chatter about the future of FriendFeed this weekend. The short answer is that the team is working on a couple of longer-term projects that will help bring FriendFeedy goodness to the larger world. Transformation is not the end. Consider this the chrysalis stage -- if all goes well, a beautiful butterfly will emerge :)
What is transforming... FriendFeed, or the idea of FriendFeed? - Christopher Galtenberg
Thanks for the update, Paul! - Anne Bouey
THANK YOU! - tehKenny
Fabulous News :) - Susan Beebe
Noticed the "leaked" Facebook UI screenshots and the groups blog post today, and both seem FriendFeed inspired: nice to see Facebook trying to bring the stuff we like about FriendFeed to a larger audience. - Mark Trapp

Sounds like they're adding some of FF's features to FaceBook. yay - iTad from fftogo
Mark - got link? - Susan Beebe
Thanks Paul :) - Ashish
Devil is in the details: "couple of longer-term projects that will help bring FriendFeedy goodness to the larger world" == Facebook projects with FriendFeed-like elements == no work on FriendFeed itself. - EricaJoy
Paul, FriendFeed rocks as Gmail does ;) - Orlando Pozo
Thanks for the update, the more you communicate, the less we have to speculate. - Peter Hoffmann
The fact that these improvements are coming to Facebook and not friendfeed will not sway those who like friendfeed but dislike Facebook. - Scoble, Alex Scoble
Thank you Paul for bringing "FriendFeed goodness to the larger world" -- THAT sounds awesome!! - Susan Beebe
I hope out of the chrysalis emerges an infested Kerrigan. That'd be awesome http://starcraft.wikia.com/wiki... - Ivan Kirigin
Thanks Mark, much appreciated... I'll check those out - Susan Beebe

Yeah, I don't give a crap about Facebook. I want to know about FriendFeed. - Rochelle
sadly, no one with any power seems to care about FF anymore. - Big Joe Silence
And there's your answer, Rochelle. friendwho? friendwhat now? Oh, you mean Facebook! (No I mean friendfeed) friendwho? (rinse, lather, repeat) - Scoble, Alex Scoble
there are some ui differences (and i tend to prefer friendfeed in those cases) but i have friended quite a few FF people in FB and the experience is remarkably similar in many ways. - Jason Wehmhoener
Thanks for the transparency on the Friendfeed "ghost town" matter Paul. Much appreciated. - Alex Knight
Thanks Paul... bring the special sauce to Facebook: http://blogs.zdnet.com/weblife... - Andrew
I like the "chrysalis stage" analogy - sounds cool.... goes an looks for FF goodness butterfly! - Susan Beebe
Good to know that FriendFeed still has some fight left; hope that translates into a viable and sustainable platform/utility for the masses (though I quite enjoy the close-knit, uber-geek community that it's become). - Christian
I don't like the chrysalis analogy. The butterfly emerges from the chrysalis and buggers off leaving the shell. Of course, it might then also get eaten by a bird. Tweet, tweet. - Mark H
Mark LOL nice, ... haha - Susan Beebe
Note that he didn't say that FriendFeed.com was going away, only that they're diverted to bringing it to a much larger audience - Jesse Stay
The problem is Scoble (Robert) and MG both just sent half of FriendFeed away so most of those that would benefit from this announcement won't even see it. - Jesse Stay
Jesse, I didn't get that from Paul's comment. I read that some of the friendfeed ideas will be going into FB. I like that idea, but I still prefer FF to FB because of the different conversations here that I don't have with friends and family. - travispuk from iPhone
Yeah, Paul's statement won't help friendfeed. This will just either give people more reason to go to Facebook or find another service entirely. - Scoble, Alex Scoble
What Alex and Rochelle said. This sounds like a "we're bringing FF to Facebook" announcement, and I don't give a damn about Facebook. I want to know what's happening HERE. And Cristo, both, but more the interface. I care about the friends I've made here, and I'm connected with many of them now on Facebook as well, but I prefer to interact with them here, because I like it better. - Jandy
Travis, he didn't say that - you read that, but he didn't say that. I'm willing to bet FriendFeed.com will not go away. - Jesse Stay
As much as I agree about Scoble and MG driving people away, they have also effectively flush out some comment from the FF team. - travispuk from iPhone
Travis, there are better ways of getting the FF team to comment - Jesse Stay
:( I quite liked the caterpillar. - Nick Lothian
Oh I don't think FF will go away, and damn will hope it doesn't either! - travispuk from iPhone
What I do see is more Facebook integrated into the FriendFeed environment - I think that's a good thing - Jesse Stay
The critical difference between Facebook and FriendFeed is the social model. With Facebook as it is today, you need to be mutual friends to see each others content. There is a "fan page" model but it is oriented toward "publishing/celebrity" rather than information sharing. FriendFeed has an asymmetric model like Twitter, where you can easily discover someone's content without any "friend" gesture whatsoever, and you can follow without friending. This makes the converation more discoverable, and useful.. - Adina Levin
Agree Adina. - travispuk from iPhone
If the integration is bringing public/asymmetric to Facebook, then it will be very useful indeed. If the integration is to add FriendFeed-style service integration into the symmetric/private Facebook model, it will be much less useful - it's more of the same - I'll be able to more easily share updates from youtube or last.fm or delicious to my friend network, but be unable to discover new people and infomation. - Adina Levin
@Jesse - I can't see any sign that they are working on FriendFeed at all. All the indications are that the FF team is now working on Facebook, and only Facebook. That's great for Facebook, and I'm sure they will do wonderful work there. But don't delude yourself that FriendFeed is going to get anything more than critical fixes, and maybe the occasional thing done in someone's spare time. - Nick Lothian
Butterflies look totally different than caterpillars and they also fly away - Melanie Reed
Crickets chirping... is this site alive?? :) - Christopher Galtenberg
+100 Adina. The things I like best about FriendFeed (easy content/people discovery, FoaF, asymmetrical following and being followed) are completely opposite to Facebook's core model. That's why as much as people keep talking about Facebook adding FF-like features, I don't see the REAL FF core features making it over, because the mindset is different. - Jandy
I don't see this announcement as anything new, or as reassuring. We knew from the time of the acquisition that there would be would be some movement of FF capabilities into FB. The real question is whether this means absorption of FF into FB or attracting the FB user base into FF. The comment about "bring[ing] FriendFeedy goodness to the larger world" still leaves that question open. - John (bird whisperer)
+1 everything Alex Scoble has said. Friendwhat? What's a feed? Who uses RSS anymore? We've got PubSubWTFOMGBBQ now! - Mr. Gunn
Agree with Jandy on +100 Adina. - Amy℠
Also, I agree with Jandy and Adina's comments. - John (bird whisperer)
Nick, Paul just said they're working on other projects right now. That still doesn't mean FriendFeed is going away. I'm not deluding myself at all. I'm telling everyone else they're deluding themselves by assuming it's going away. All the FriendFeed team is still using FriendFeed, and Paul just tried to give us comfort not to worry. For some reason we all don't want to believe him. It's actually kind of amusing. - Jesse Stay
I wonder what the powers that be mean by "FriendFeedy goodness"? Is it understood what WE like about it vs. FB? - Amy℠
Paul - Wishing you all the best as you tend your new butterfly garden :) I'll be here to enjoy them! - Susan Beebe
This is not the news that Friendfeed fans were looking for. - Vezquex
The issue isn't belief that they are going to do something. The question is what they are going to do, and whether that will continue the core value of FriendFeed, which is not just information aggregation but discoverability. - Adina Levin
I know more about the "Last Days" and heaven than I know about what's going to happen to FriendFeed as we have come to know it than was given in your rather cryptic answer, Paul. :) And while that may not be a fair comparison (God actually gave details and signs), there is something definitely not forthcoming about your response. A person usually withholds details that affect another... more... - Melanie Reed
Hopefully this helps to quiet all of the "friendfeed is dying" talk. Because this thread proves ff is alive and well. - Garin Kilpatrick
@Jesse - I read it differently to you. To me, Paul is saying "We are taking what we were working towards on FriendFeed, and trying to bring that goodness to a bigger audience". No one is claiming they are going to shut down FF. - Nick Lothian
@Jesse - Want to make a bet on the number of new features added to FF before the end of the year? - Nick Lothian
You read my mind. Having seen a few acquisitions, I am wondering if FF staff was told to put the site in bugfix mode. - EricaJoy from IM
Cristo, to deliver some straightforward talk is not about giving away company details. If you have a product that is original and stands on its own, you don't need to refer to it as a "butterfly". Many companies even promote something new and upcoming especially to their loyal user base. It gives a signal. A proper one. It tells your users and future users enough so that they can make an informed decision about what they want to do instead of keeping them on tenderhooks - Melanie Reed
"the chrysalis stage in most butterflies is one in which there is little movement" (via wikipedia) So if you follow that metaphor then eventually FriendFeed will go through a metamorphosis -- that means it's not dead... really how hard can it be to get what he's saying? - Chris Heath
Its pretty hard :) The burning question is if they are putting FF goodness in to the walled gardens that are Facebook or are they bringing FF openness to FB too. I think the people here want the open forums that are FF not the closed ones that are FB. If FB is going hybrid with both walled gardens and open forums that would be OK too. People on FF want open forums... like Twitter and FF... without the crude interface that is Twitter and without the uncertainty that is FF now. - Ed Millard
Facebook is gonna have to rip off much of the privacy to maximize their product in the real-time web world. I am going to assume FF goodness is going to be applied to FB :) *crosses fingers* - Susan Beebe
Just a thought... why does "longer-term projects that will help bring FriendFeedy goodness to the larger world" JUST mean facebook.com? What I get from this is that they are working on a range of things, maybe bringing the FriendFeed sauce to a range of sites, powered by the Facebook back end. Who knows what that means. A FriendFeed service powered by FacebookConnect? Also to...... more... - Johnny
LMFAO. Johnny++ - Rahsheen
FB needs to leave the privacy for the walled garden and the inner circle. Their current user base likes that. They just need a second feed that is an open forum and you can talk there without it bleeding in to your inner circle feed. - Ed Millard
Yes, but blocking doesn't work so well since you can just use Chrome's Incognito mode to get around it. - Scoble, Alex Scoble
Translation: if you haven't switche to Facebook yet, you better do it now so you can get a good vanity URL. - David Chartier from iPhone
I don't know what all the fuss is about. But could we have the long answer too, please? - Laura Norvig
Although I'm interested, FB != FF. I don't see how the two mix in a way that makes me feel otherwise. Mixing audiences is not a good thing for me (with a few exceptions) and I know others share the same thought. - manielse (Mark Nielsen)
Paul, will FF be here in 1 year, 5 years? - Robert Higgins
Thanks for the update Paul.. - Chris Myles
Cristo I am funking nobody, I would like Paul to quantify his post. Simple. Will FF be here in 1 year? Will FF be here in 5 years? - Robert Higgins
IMO friendfeed shoud attract more general audience... Facebook and twitter are having more general users. Most of the FF users are tech bloggers or those who needs aggregation services... I dont know it's just my feeling or not . but this is my impression on FF. but it's great service.. the features are too good... but we will roam were we meet our friends... thats most of the people are into twitter and FB. - Sarath
Ohhhh a perrrttty butterfly, I'm moist with anticipation. - sofarsoShawn
Glad to hear it, Paul. - WoH: Professor MOTHRA
Cristo: i almost made the same observation an hour or two ago when i first read through this posting and its comments. I was skimming and kept seeing alex, alex, alex... and thinking to myself... where's Robert!?! - Chris Heath
Great news. Thanks! friendfeed team. :D - Franc, a rememberer
@Sarath - I have a lot more in common with the people I've met here on FriendFeed than FB or Twitter. Twitter is too hard to search, and FB (and Twitter to a good extent) is driven by the people you know in RL (and unfortunately I don't have nearly as much in common in RL with my family, co-workers and acquaintences as I do with people scattered all over the world who I have met on FF).... more... - Lindsay
I think that in his cryptic statement he means, and a lot of people here agree with me, that more Facebook's going to get more FriendFeedy. Which doesn't mean that FF still isn't dead or doomed. After all, he works for Facebook now. FriendFeed=open forum, Facebook=walled garden, totally opposite master metaphors; but I don't think Zuckerberg gets it, and FF belongs to Zuckerberg now. So this is really about FB; FF's still in limbo. Still, some FF people friended me at FB, and I put them in a special list. - Dennis Jernberg
@FF-team keep on rocking :). BTW I also think it's really cool you guys open-sourced tornado. - alfred westerveld
+1 what alfred said, and good to hear words like "longer-term" & "beautiful" coming straight from The Walrus - keep that vision strong. Hope all goes well for FF team doing some good re-inventing the Octopus Garden of FB - seems you've got your work cut out for you there! It would be so nice if any way to keep a "simple & pure" form of FriendFeed alive (maintained and developed - more open source?) for us to enjoy, but no worries .... you've simultaneously raised the bar and paved the way for the rest! - Dan Freeman
Good luck with the development Paul! Hopefully Zuck has some positive insight. - Garin Kilpatrick
I like butterflies. - Harold Cabezas
Paul: If someone offered me a bag of money to do what you guys did, I would have done exactly the same (probably a lot faster too). However, it would be nice if you spent an hour answering some of the questions here. It might also give people like me a little more faith, in what used to be your primary project; Friendfeed. You made the best platform on the planet - why not use it to let us know what the heck's going on? - Jim Connolly
I'm assuming that Facebook wants to keep their roadmap quiet. I respect that but leaving you community in the dark for a brand that the applications stand for community building is rather ironic. - manielse (Mark Nielsen)
SUPER!! I don't Blame ya 1 Darn bit fer Dumpin' FacePOOP Paul!! ;PPP Wait FacePOOP is the Maggot Stage!! ;)) - Billy Warhol
If I can still have all my friends that I have here on friendfeed and share things with them the exact same way, I don't care what "www" address I have to type in to get it. I just hope i don't have to give up any of FF's awesome features! Thanks for the update Paul! - David Cook
The problem is I don't know whether to wrote an app on your API or not because i'm not sure whether it will all be dropped in the "transformation". Imagine speding late nights and weekends coding something up only for it to be dropped suddenly. Need a decent long term picture. Looking at Cliqset. - Steven Livingstone-Pérez
Good point Steven - and one of the reasons many of us are spending so little time developing our networks here. - Jim Connolly
ffcode: Good luck with that ;-) - Jim Connolly
So the changes are at Facebook not FriendFeed, Paul? - Kol Tregaskes
And good luck to all of your team - Özkan Altuner from iPhone

I do care about what happens next, but this is the best news of the day nonetheless ! thanks for giving us updates at last ! and I do hope FF will awaken again ! such a great tool, but letdown since the announcement of the buyback by FB - laetSgo
will I see this post in my "best of week" email from FF? - Kirill Bolgarov
If Facebook is going to get fixed, please remember that it needs fixing politically, not just technically. It needs to give people the option to open their data to Google - for instance. A walled garden where the walls are fixed in place sucks. - Tim Tyler
@Paul, or perhaps an Alien will erupt forth from its stomach? (kidding, kidding!) - j1m

from PyCon Argentina: "an optimization branch of cPython, intended to be fully compatible and significantly faster. GOALS: 1. produce a version of python at least 5x faster than cPython. 2. python application performance should be stable. 3. maintain source-level compatibility with cPython applications. 4. maintain source-level compatibility with cPython extension modules. 5. we do not want to maintain a python implementation forever; we view our work as a branch, not a fork." http://code.google.com/p... \\ enjoyable video -- almost a stand-up comedy routine based on the dynamic features of Python ;-) - Adriano from Bookmarklet
Even if Unladen Swallow never meets its goal of merging completely into CPython, I have to give big credit for the positive side effects of the project, mentioned at the end of the talk. CPython has already apparently incorporated many changes from their Q1 release, and as a result of needing to debug US, they contributed patches allowing the GNU Debugger (GDB) to hook into LLVM. Wonderful. - Chris Lasher
