i did it in college once also for charity.
- MG Siegler
I shave my head every two weeks. In fact I shaved it today. What's the big deal?
- Jason Toney
Bah, you have short hair anyways! SHAVE IT! :-P
- Matthew Horton
gotta do it! hair grows back, and an awesome idea can't stop at the first person
- Donny Warbritton
Dude...you've been double-dog-dared. Do it, then call out DVORAK!
- Jim
Talking about calling someone out! - Flip it, donate double his call out and pay some to shave their head, so the game can continue!
- Brad Parler
come on! it's just hair, it will grow back!!!
- Chris Jones
from twhirl
you're asking us? where are your walnuts?
- sean808080
from twhirl
Yes! You do have great hair and that's all a better reason to shave it off. I'll donate to your charity if you do it. This is some quality entertainment!
- Rachel Rubin
Lol talk about pressure. Ouch! Just give the money to charity yourself bro - keep the hair...
- Calvin Robinson
from twhirl
DONT DO THE HAIR, just give the money. lol Maybe give double so you DONT have to shave it. lol
- Leslie Poston
You need to do it since others will do it simply because you have done it. Think of the charities that'll benefit and remember it'll grow back :) Oh ps. your lady friend will dig you doing it for a noble cause
- Greg Rosen
from twhirl
Do it Kevin! Don't let things come to a screaming halt this early! Then call out Laporte!!! Leo your time is coming!!! LOL!
- Robert Couture
from twhirl
You're screwed. You better do it...at least it grows back...well it does at your age ha!
- Francis P Bonnemere
Do it Kevin!! It will grow back - Then yeah, call out Laporte or better yet - Dvorak!!!
- Les Zaldor
Do it. I need more blog fodder. LOL. P.S. Don't call me.
- Todd Jordan
I doubt that this thing will catch on... I'd be much more impressed if, I don't know, maybe if it was a contest with a prize from Gary, and that to be part of it you need to chip in in order to gather a big amount of money for a charity, skipping all that hair stuff. Or maybe to spread awareness about sites like Kiva.org, and get people involved. Kevin and Gary both have a lot of power in their hands, but I think there are more efficient ways than this hair thing. Best of luck though guys! Hope this works.
- Vincent X
It's like a reality game show: video double dog dare, pressure from the audience, and if you don't do it you should get voted off. Besides, it's for charity, so there's no harm.
- Pete Delucchi
do it and have Alex or Leo be next. Patrick would be too easy his hair is too close
- Todd Proffitt
Here's an idea - instead of shaving your head, amend it to say that if you don't shave your head, you double the amount donated
- Clay Levering
This is a great idea, but man I feel for you! How about everyone that comments here sends $5 as well?
- Rob
Lighting a bit dark but, heh, whatever: it's Gary with Kevin!! :)
- Barbara K. Baker
Love these guys! They make me laugh no matter what words come out of their mouth. Good points about the wine fridge, but I still want one.
- Rachel Rubin
I just started playing with Seesmic this past weekend and have been having so much fun! Since twitter was down most of the weekend I did find myself spending more time on Seesmic. I haven't figured out searching yet (for twitter I use summize) so you just have to get lucky for and be online during a current conversation. But I'm sure I'll figure out some more tricks soon.
- Rachel Rubin
It's amazing how many social media tools I saw in use today. Yeah, it's not changing fast enough for most of us passionate types, but it sure is changing quickly.
- Robert Scoble
Cool! I'd love to know what social media tools those folks in DC were using today!
- Susan Beebe
@Robert Great post. I loved how Congressman Culberson owned the guy from TMZ. That was a classic. It will be really intriguing to see how committed these politicians are to building relationships using the social media tools that they have at their disposal.
- Chris Rodgers
Amazing post Robert. What an incredible day you must have had. Curious to hear what Patrick though of it all too. So envious. I've been looking forward to this post all day as I could not follow you live. We are clearly helping shape the future with our efforts on there here socnets. Wait till GW hears that we are talking to people in Iran on Friendfeed. *chills down spine*
- Brian Daniel Eisenberg
Wow, this is great story with amazing amount of detailed use of social media tools. who would have known?! shock and awe
- Susan Beebe
Great article! I love the bit about the Congressman twittering from the Oval Office.
- Michael Zitek
I believe in the tech I was arguing in it's favor 8 years ago on the Hill but until it decides in a House or Senate election, I call bullshit. Robert I believe in the earnest and true honestly of belief of your effort. I am not talking ideology or what the people belief you think but until it decides an election they(DC Hill folks) really won't believe.
- Thomas Vincent
Thomas: do newspapers or radio decide House or Senate elections? I don't think so. They sure help, though.
- Robert Scoble
True Robert, but more so than internet does yet? But we are getting there soon :-)
- Thomas Vincent
Thomas: I think for people passionate about politics the Internet is already having way more impact than any other media. For those who aren't passionate, yes, TV is still the #1 way they get their info, but that's changing pretty quickly too.
- Robert Scoble
It is changing things, but you also have to ask it changing things across the whole spectrum of those who are involved in politics, i.e. the rich and the poor, the educated and the not? A system in which everyone has access to this that and the other thing is nice, but you also has to ask who all is included in 'everyone', especially in a country in which many people don't have computers or net access.
- Andrew Leyden
Think your theme loses out to Lawrence Lessig's idea on changing Washington.http://change-congress.org/pledge... Don't think it matters if a guy is corrupt and pork barreling and Tweet's or doesn't. The system is bad, not the toys they use to navigate it.
- Mark Forman
Perfect no Andrew, but those who have an interest can find their way
- Thomas Vincent
Mark: Lessig's idea is awesome, but Culberson disagrees with you. He is of the belief that if you shine light on things that the roaches scatter.
- Robert Scoble
Robert-on that point certainly holds validity. That's why discussion is better than a monologue because it allows consideration on more than one point.I think that many different idea and discussions are needed to make DC a little bit better, not even good or passable, just a little better. Ironic that that place was a swamp.
- Mark Forman
I worked on a "low-budget" Maryland senate campaign for Allan Lichtman in 2006, fresh out of college, and we were dubbed in an article by Business Week as the first campaign to fully embrace myspace/facebook. We had a staff member who's full time job was adding friends, and other profile management type services. Now, campaigns have full-time departments to do just that! amazing. Here's that article: http://www.businessweek.com/technol...
- Brian Ries
There is also a huge divide between the politics of the Hill and the politics of a campaign. The two are very very different things and those who work on the Hill usually don't know the first thing about campaign politics and vise versa. Both worlds will find completely different uses for new technologies
- Marco(aureliusmaximus)
I wish @BarackObama would post more from the campaign trail. No, I don't expect to be him personally, but yes, I'd expect him to have a guy or gal to post one thing to Twitter each day.
- Kirk Kittell
Kirk. I told Obama's tech guy just that at breakfast.
- Robert Scoble
Robert: Did you find out if he ever does it himself? I mean, not all the time, but once in a while is it him who updates it? I guess probably not.
- Eric Florenzano
Thanks Robert - However, I might have appreciated it more if you had volunteered me ;-)
- Kirk Kittell
I believe the word we are searching for here is "transparent"!! I think everyone wishes that government officials were more transparent with their decision making processes as well as things happening on Capital Hill. Kudos to Scoble for shedding some light on a new wave of thinking from inside the hallowed halls of our government!! Even if the wave is too small to ride yet!!
- Nathan Finley
Eric: it isn't him most of the time but he says that Obama is the fastest keyboarder on a Blackberry. I told him (and one of McCain's advisers too) to use these tools interactively. We will see!
- Robert Scoble
@scobleizer How is tech changing Washington politics? Interesting FriendFeed discussion here. Thanx!
- Barbara K. Baker
too bad there isn't a directory of Govt folks to show who's on online using social networking tools like twitter, FF, Qik, etc.
- Susan Beebe
Still pains me to think about how tech-illiterate McCain is-- remember his interview on TechCrunch. The tech future's in much better hands with Obama, but that's an argument for a different time and place.
- Harish V
He thinks tech isn't important. Obama is going to make this one of a number of issues they nail McCain on. Many in Washington are saddened that he has changed his tone and positions to cowtow to religious right.
- Robert Scoble
couldn't make it work. is it supposed to work in the friendfeed window?
- fbrunel
forget about what I just said, downloaded the wrong file
- fbrunel
I just tried and the integration is great! it's faster to watch videos on Twhirl than on the Seesmic website. Do you plan to integrate video recording as well?
- fbrunel
oh! I was hoping I would be able to play seesmic videos that are aggregated by FriendFeed too! Is that not yet possible or am I missing something?
- Parth Awasthi
from twhirl
You need an unreleased beta version of twhirl to use seesmic directly. Follow the link posted by Loic to get that version.
- fbrunel
Seesmic just got 200% more usefull to me. Now I have a reason to actually start convincing my friends to use Seesmic. Hope you guys are working on some kind of text embed and not solely relying on Friendfeed to place text alongside video or something. Also, please PLEASE integrated all account windows into a single one, my entire second screen is now taken up with just Twhirl, its a bit...
- Robert
from twhirl
Thanks Robert, we are exactly doing all this!
- Loic Le Meur
from twhirl
@fbrunel I upgraded to 0.8.2b via the Linc Loic had posted. I hope that is the correct version...
- Parth Awasthi
from twhirl
Something interesting I noticed: the default stream that Twhirl shows is your Seesmic friend stream. Its not the public feed, which is hidden underneath the world icon (i like that icon btw). This shows the focus has shifted to the twitter model, while for a long time it was centered around the public feed. This makes far more sense to me, so way to go. Time to start spreading the Seesmic love umungst the sysadmic crowd, let see how many people I can convince to use it :)
- Robert
from fftogo
worked perfectly... Seesmic + Twitter + Friendfeed in the same application... remind me to buy a biggest screen... :)
- Steph
excellent !! but could we have only one window to check all accounts ?? great work seesmic team ;)
- Denis COUTURIER
from twhirl
that sounds like a job for the Google Reader team. Your feed subscriptions are great explicit data to make custom memetrackers for whatever you want
- Nicholas Molnar
from twhirl
I think the Best Of feature of FriendFeed is a great way to get what you described.
- Mike Doeff
Maybe I'm missing what you're after, but it sounds like you could cook up something close with feedhub
- Andrew Codrington
Fred, I think you're looking for an A-Lister Techmeme... cool idea for sure. One spot we can go to in order to stay in touch with their stuff. smart! FriendFeed "Rooms" could accommodate this feature request.
- Susan Beebe
isn't that just... techmeme? ;) sounds like you are saying "can i get a techmeme without techcrunch, cnet, or the news wires"
- Jeremy Toeman
why don't you just set up a new FriendFeed account and only follow those people, then use the "show best of" to get the top stories
- Duncan Riley
ohh yeah, let's not forget about Guy Kawasaki's Alltop. Not perfect, but might be what you're looking for
- Nicholas Molnar
from twhirl
@duncanriley - what i am looking for is a service that does the work for me. i didn't have to do that on techmeme
- Fred Wilson
Yes. It's called a "feed reader" and you can get them from a variety of sources. :)
- Ian Betteridge
Wow, so that's what the 5D can do at ISO 1600? Great shots.
- J. McConnell
thanks all, J. McConnell, the 5D is awesome at 1,600. I'm expecting even better things coming from the 5D Mark II when it's out as well given what we've recently seen from Nikon using iso expansion with the Nikon D3.
- Thomas Hawk
The D3 (and D300) at high ISO is unreal. Makes me want to upgrade.
- Benjamin Golub
from fftogo
Wow, I hadn't looked at it before but the D3 is unbelievable. I'll have to keep my eye out for 5D Mark II news. Thanks for the info, Thomas.
- J. McConnell
Will you sell one of your cameras? Looks like they are magic. Apart from your skill of course :)
- funkyboy
from Posty
It's not the camera; Thomas could definitely do magic with a cheap P&S
- Benjamin Golub
