"Nokia did exactly the right thing in pushing Microsoft. It's absolutely necessary for the future of the platform. It's not about how many devices you have, but what the price range is (or if you like the addressable market). You can't sell to someone if you don't have a device in their price range. Doing both high end and low end devices means different specs. That of course means compromises and yes fragmentation. But it's how you hand that fragmentation that really matter. Microsoft here are doing a much better job than say RIM or Android in terms of making a clear cut and definition between the two groups. Yes I think the big brand apps need to be fixed, but as the same time they are just a few apps. More importantly in terms of out of the box experience the difference is minimal (speed / features). The point about the 710 pricing is a good one... but the 610 will no doubt undercut even that."
