"When downloading data to a file using downloadDestinationPath, data will be saved in a temporary file while the request is in progress. This file's path is stored in temporaryFileDownloadPath. When the request completes successfully, one of two things happen: If the data is gzip compressed (see information on gzip compression), the compressed file will be uncompressed into downloadDestinationPath, and the temporary file will be deleted If the data is not compressed, the temporary file is moved to downloadDestinationPath, overwriting any previous file"

Identi.ca. The code is open source (I think it is called Laconica), so anyone can go and recreate FB, FF, or Twitter. Not just Torvalds.
- Justin Whitaker
So we just need to convince Rob Scoble to join?
- Ralf Rottmann
Identi.ca is a twitter clone, not a friendfeed equivilant.
- Paul Kinlan
laconica / identica are indeed excellent and constantly improving, still prefer FF even more
- Mike Chelen
Paul, I am saying that it Identi.ca could be a starting point. No need to rewrite all the code if part of what you need is status updates. It has native URL shortening. Identi.ca can do linkbacks and integrate into Google Analytics via plugins. Wired is also saying you can do image/video sharing, although I don't see that in the specifications anywhere. Someone more code savvy than I would have to hack it, but it might be a good starting point.
- Justin Whitaker
justin: decantralized is good, just need it not to be a twitter clone, I really don't buy micro-messaging anymore, for me FF proved that micro-messaging alone doesn't work, but rather a almagmation of all my online presence aggregated against everyone else's
- Paul Kinlan
The FriendFeed acquisition is yet another strong case for finally creating an open source, community-owned service. We've seen this before: Facebook will change content ownership policies. Facebook will try to monetize based on FriendFeed behavior, maybe again without letting us know. Where is the Linus Torvalds of the Social Network World?
You mind telling me where the money to run this magic network of yours will come from? Unlike apps, services need to be running to exist. Running them requires resources, which will ALWAYS require cash and monetization. P2P hosting only brings up huge QoS and leecher issues - just ask Joost how well that idea went. Or see Wuala, which is going nowhere fast. There will be no Torvalds of the social network world simply because it's logically impossible.
- LANjackal
Hopefully, users will not have to deal with Facebook monetizing without our knowledge
- courtney benson
They already have monetized FB. That would explain the ads, the Bing search results, MS' $250 million investment, etc.
- LANjackal

LANjackal: We might want to ask the Gates Foundation to sponsor it for the next, let's say, 1.000 years. ;-)
- Ralf Rottmann
LANjackal: Another option could be to ask users to donate in favor of guaranteed privacy. Would love to see how that "business model" would work.
- Ralf Rottmann
I WAS subscribed to Bret, but he went to a private feed? Either that or be blocked me for some reason. Edit, yep, blocked me. Don't know why, don't think I ever even commented on any of his posts :/
- Mark
It looks like Bret's feed is now private. At least, that's what a quick test on his feed thru the API says (error 405 : Not Allowed)
- Zackatoustra
from IM
Zack: 405 means method not allowed (IE you used a GET when you should have used a POST or vice-versa)
- Benjamin Golub
One important thing FriendFeed API doesn't seem to have on a very cursory fast read: location, location, location! Really it's too bad.
- Robert Scoble
Benjamin, I take that back, very cool, thank you!
- Robert Scoble
Thanks Dave checking it out. Great work Benjamin & team. Now to figure out how to use this to save many hours coding up similar stuff for my selfish project.
- Mark Essel
Geo location features sound awesome :)
- Susan Beebe
I hope Atebits will do a FriendFeed client for the iPhone now!
- Ralf Rottmann
Agree with Ralf. We *need* a killer FriendFeed app for the iPhone!! Please?
- Timothy Federwitz
Why are posts from weeks ago coming up now?
- Mark
Probably me discovering older posts and liking? Nope it wasn't me :)

It is illegal to be on your iPhone while driving in CA. Unless it's hands free.

Wait, but what about turns? This gives me an idea: have that keyboard where you type on the back of it integrated into your steering wheel! you might have a few stray strokes, but it would at least be funny.
- Californian
We use this on a Nokia E71 without crashes. Can't you see my feet propped up watching the Right Coast waves? http://mundy.org/whereib

Why are broadcast reëmission times on the site NOT written in the universal UTC time format, but in American-centric EDT-time zone one? At the very least you could have thought of including just the starting and ending times of it in UTC - we can do the rest of the math ourselves.
- ianf ⌘
Thanks for your honest feedback. I wanted to get the post out first. Will add another time zone later!

And hey, Ian, at least Apollo 11 was a US mission...
- Ralf Rottmann
from email
You don't have to thank me, I should not have to write it at all. What's "Moon landing shown: 4:17:40 pm EDT" in CET/CEDT [currently GMT +0200] terms? 20:17 this evening, just 77 minutes away?
- ianf ⌘
Ian, I always appreciate feedback. Even if it's not that positive. And even if it's not that friendly. :-) Updated the post with CET timestamps. Hope this helps.
- Ralf Rottmann
It's interesting, Ralf that while you say that "you always appreciate feedback," you can not hold back expressing some disapproval of it because it may not have been as "friendly," as you apparently expect/ed. Also, knowing that I post this from FriendFeed, you never cared to reply straight to my direct time question here, but expected me to make a second trip to your eyeballs-counting...
- ianf ⌘
@Ian: I initially responded via email (as you might easily grasp from the FriendFeed comments) because I was almost out for today. I recognized your criticism and added the CET times to the post simply because that way it might help other TNW readers, too. I did not mean to "drag you back" to what you are referring to as "eyeballs-counting" site. If you'd prefer not to visit our site,...
- Ralf Rottmann
I deactivated it, too. I regularly check new followers via Tweetie (iPhone) or Twitter's (enhanced) Web interface and decide whom to follow back, whom to block and whom to ignore. It's kind of a scheduled maintenance at least once every two weeks. ;-)
- Ralf Rottmann
How do we know Apple is going to approve it? Don't they treat all development program members equal? Just kidding here... (really frustrated with the review process that slowed down significantly over the past couple of weeks, again).
- Ralf Rottmann
Sounds like the (Places directory) app by Google for Android phones, I really like that one :-)
- Alex M.
sounds good, will there be a S60 app next :)
- Anthony Farrior
I wonder if we will hear about that new Dell soon
- Mark
@Alex: I'm definitely impressed with the number of forward thinking apps for Android. iPhone is just a cluster f*ck of apps all badly doing the same thing. I know I just got the new 3GS, but that's only because in 18 months Android will be a VERY tasty proposition :p
- CannonGod
@Jake: In order to push a notification that you're near a place, the app would have to continually send location updates to your server, meaning the app would have to be either open or running in the background. In other words, not possible with the iPhone SDK (AFAIK).
- Raj Advani
Robert, I swear you have A.D.D. Adoption Dependency Disorder :)
- Rhys Amos
from iPod
@Raj: A valid point, though I'm wondering if Apple are looking to lower the Push interval from 15 mins to 5 mins (or custom) in light of how much they've pushed Push for OS 3.0. An interesting case study for now would be the Palringo app. They don't yet use Push, but you can close the app down to the Home screen and still get buzzed IM replies in near real-time.
- CannonGod
Right, although the push interval isn't the problem for this particular feature. For something like Palringo, the server can push updates to the phone because the updates are in response to external events (people sending you IMs). In the Yelp example, you're getting notifications as a result of internal events: your phone changing location. It's that step of transmitting location when your app is off that isn't possible yet with iPhone 3.0.
- Raj Advani
It should work on Android as well. Augmented reality apps using the compass and the camcorder mode, those are awesome.
- Charbax
Camera based augmented reality apps have to wait until the release of OS 3.1. Otherwise, a non-camera interaction AR would tread on other company's IP. Yelp should be careful.
- Ryan
"Um, I guess you didn’t see the naked pictures of me in Mike Arrington’s backyard, have you? I guarantee you our HR department has seen those."

- Ralf Rottmann
Now the question is, how did Sarah Lacy manage to stay out of all of those photos? I hear she was there, too. :-)
- Jesse Stay
scoble, you rule. I thought this whole thing was funny and I love that you got it and came back with more.
- metalerik
Hee, great pics. Setting a good example for the youth of the world <G>. Yeah, where was Sarah Lacy?
- JimmyJet
I think I like you better now. You might be a geek, but at least you're not a dork. Besides, it looked like you were having fun, and that's the only thing that matters.
- Michael Fidler
In case the Mac OS X Leopard Boot Camp assistant complains "Files cannot be moved" use Drive Genius 2 to defragment your volume. Helped on ALL of my Macs. http://www.prosofteng.com/product...
I can't tell you how I got this photo and I can't tell you why I am dumping my Mac when this comes out but this is the first Dell that has me slobbering in a very long time.
- Robert Scoble
Didn't you say something similar about the Nokia N97 a few months ago?
- Beau Giles
You've got to tell me more than that for me to believe why you might throw your Mac away??
- Aaron Myers
Really - with the build quality they are renown for!!
- Ian Lewis
If it runs windows 7 then at least there is some reason for this madness. Anything else and you've completely lost your mind!
- Devlin Dunsmore
Amit: I can't explain why, sorry, but this will get a lot of attention and Apple will have to react to it. Why do you think Apple has been attacking Windows 7?
- Robert Scoble
Looks like a "laptop" and it's "black".
- thund3rbox
Yes, it looks sleek, but it's still a Dell.
- Bob Young
From the keyboard, it looks like a 15.4" or 17" widescreen that's super thin. (keyboard is chiklet-style)
- Eugene Hsu
You can't throw out your mac! You'll eventually be crawling back.
- Matt Ruiz
Yes, I got excited by the Palm Pre but I don't think I said the Pre would get me to throw away my iPhone. Of course we don't know what Apple will do but this will make Apple guys at least raise their eyebrows.
- Robert Scoble
Throwing away your Mac is a bad idea.
- Louis Gray
May I suggest to sell The Original Scoble MacBook Pro on ebay and hand the money in for charity?
- Ralf Rottmann
NokiaN97 does widescreen videos with new Qik, by the way. iPhone doesn't.
- Robert Scoble
Don't throw your Mac away!! Keep it as 'backup', you might need it ... ;) ;)
- Ronald
Asgod: believe me Engadget will be all over this.
- Robert Scoble
This was rolled out to selected laptop users 4-5 months ago, wasn't it? Lots of drooling, if I recall. But you should keep your Mac as a backup. And so far as "I can't tell you how I got this photo ..." is concerned, what's with the name tag on the fellow doing the Vana White?
- Bob Young
Mona you have to fight Allen and I for it first
- Jesse Stay
I'm thinking full solid state, very fast

Nooo... I wanted a Dell 15' with nice reso but no HD. Not avaliable in Europe. I had to buy a MacBook Pro. Received today. Nice but I loved my Latitude.
- Jérôme Flipo
BTW, nice tattoo's Robert! When did you get those?
- Dean Kakridas
And with that very light and low on heat
- Jesse Stay
so what's the specs on it ? intel T9900, DDR3?
- Khaled A
touch screen? that doesn't seem mac-trash-worthy. flips around like a tablet, with touch screen? nah. super battery with built in wimax or 4G connectivity? maybe.
- Chip Ramsey
Dean, per the nametag that's @rockmanusa, Robert's producer/photographer
- Jesse Stay
I'm intrigued by the google map you have attached with it ... battery park city?! Sounds quite interesting indeed, but I won't be interested, unless it can polish my shoes, feed the cats, and wash itself every 3 hours :) Ohh I wouldn't mind if it has a proper multi-touch trackpad.
- Shivanand Velmurugan
Asgod: I broke all sorts of rules to get this photo. Photography is expressly not allowed where I am. It is geek heaven though.
- Robert Scoble
robert - you might want to crop out the person's name who is in the photo :)
- Allen Stern
Robert: So how did we get a photograph then?! (good ol' don't give a crap about the rulez eh? :) ) A lot of hype, it better be seriously good :)\
- Shivanand Velmurugan
it was leaked a few days earlier on another site though :>
- Khaled A
Who's the bigger sucker here ... Scoble ... or those sucked in by this post
- Don Strickland
are you serious? c'mon, it's a PC! The main component of any computer is not the hardware, it's SOFTWARE.
- Konstantin
Don: it does a few things your Mac doesn't.
- Robert Scoble
Konstantin: really? Why don't you use a Mac Classic then and why do all Mac fans slobbering when new hardware comes out? Finally you should try Windows 7 on your Mac. You might be surprised. I am running Windows 7 on my Mac.
- Robert Scoble
Francine: I am buying Crunchpads for a different reason.
- Robert Scoble
Can I just point out did a search for "scoble 'Palm Pre' 'throw away'" to see what you said back at CES... and Google already has the comments on this thread indexed?
- Ken Sheppardson
Jeff: I think this Dell will help Microsoft poke Apple in the eye again.
- Robert Scoble
I saw the specs, and it just doesn't *seem* that spectacular. Maybe it makes waffles and prints money...
- Carlton Prest
Nice, thanks for the heads up Robert. Don't mind the fanboy's calling you a heretic. ;)
- Adi
Has me curious. I'm not going to be so bold as to claim in an Apple "fanboish" way that nothing can possibly beat Apple.
- Angus Burton
19 hours of battery is impressive if true
- Brian Hill
"I can't tell you how I got this photo" -- Perhaps by standing next to Rocky as he held one on the NYSE floor yesterday? :-)
- Ken Sheppardson
100+ comments later... mission completed. You won't throw or give away your Mac for a Dell w/ Win 7
- Jonathan Brown
You'll hurt your shoulder carrying that thing around, but man, what a great screen!!
- RobinDotNet
Looks like picture was taken at the New York Stock Exchange. Maybe it's a multi-touch screen?
- Steve de Mena
Steve: all I can say is it has stuff Apple doesn't yet do.
- Robert Scoble
Robin: I have a bag with wheels for my Mac so my shoulder is OK. The photo was taken tonight.
- Robert Scoble
Microsoft Bing: We did not find any results for "tell you why I am dumping my Mac when this comes out but this is the first Dell" ~ giggle
- Don Strickland
I'm glad you have a wheelie bag, now you can buy it with impunity and wheel it through airports all over the world, feeling happy about your awesome laptop. :-) (How much does it weigh?)
- RobinDotNet
@Robert "Steve: all I can say is it has stuff Apple doesn't yet do...." TBH, there has been a lot of things the Macbook line hasn't been up to par feature wise for a long time. This isn't nothing new. My 1yr old XPS has eSATA, "F/W", "ExpressCard", 10in1 MMC, Biometrics, HDMI, Blu Ray, 4USB and integrated 3G all of which would be 'show stoppers' if Apple announced them. So its all relative.
- Adi
Adi, those features would become "amazing" and "new" were they announced by Apple -- much the same way that video is suddenly an amazing new feature of iPhones.
- Christopher A Carr
"has stuff Apple doesn't yet do" ... hmmm ... when placed on a Microsoft Surface it transforms into a puck for Microsoft Surface Hockey, played by waving your hands at the built-in Natal controllers.
- Don Strickland
Will it run Pro Tools. It seems as if I need to use it for digital editing of raw audio.
- Mathew A. Koeneker
Mathew: I would imagine it would, but I don't have it to try that, so will have to wait to tell you definitively.
- Robert Scoble
Thanks, Robert. Being out of the music & video biz since '97 has me playing catch up. The KDHX studios where I will be working are a mac house.
- Mathew A. Koeneker
Since it looks like a shell.. I will assume its the touchscreen with MS Surface on Windows 7 :)
- Tim Hoeck
looks like old black macbook to me! nothing new at least not in image! whats so special?
- matjeka
To back Robert up, I got to try this bad boy right after him. And I can agree, this will make me switch too (after 25 solid years of Mac OS) Holy crap, Dell must have a secret time machine in the basement if 1/2 of these "special" features are true. WOW WOW WOW, and price...WOW!!!
- sean andersen
Robert, Honestly I am not really impressed by the picture, as some mentioned before it most likely is not Mac OS X, is it? And what about battery life, does it match the MBP 17 inch battery life time?
- Peter Simoons
If this feels better to use than a mac, then it will do well. A shopping list of new features won't matter if it doesn't do the core things that make people love Macs.
- Sam
from twhirl
I don't believe you :) Let's revisit this thread when it comes out and see if you follow through
- Bwana ☠
So this is going to bring beleaguered Dell out of the doldrums? Apple did that, but I'll not hold my breath because of Dell's basic build-em-cheap philosophy.
- Rick Cogley
there's claims it is sporting a Mobile Intel GMA 4500MHD, Series 4 for video.. if so, that's one giant missed opportunity!
- alphaxion
touch screen would be great, there is a big need in netbooks because of the improvement of usable input area
- Mike Chelen
ok, I'm also intrigued. I can't figure out what is so special about this new notebook.
- timepilot
Robert: Can have your Mac when you're done with it? :)
- John Fox
Hmmm ... I am thinking Dell beat Crunchpad to market with a touchscreen running Win7... If so, Yay for Dell, way to go!!! I will definitely want a Z if so!! *Looks around for @RichardatDELL* :)
- Susan Beebe
The way things are going my mom will never get her new computer. I keep telling her something better is just around the corner.
- ChiliMac
I'm assuming it's windows 7 multi touch and gestural support. The surface code that's now part of windows 7...
- mikepk
mikepk: there are more features than that that Apple doesn't yet have. Gotta wait, though, I promised not to leak.
- Robert Scoble
Dont throw it away! Im sure there are plenty of people that would love to have your old mac!
- James Hague
If it doesn't run OS X it's pointless.
- Peter Kruit
Peter: it runs it, but you can't buy OSX legally for use on non Apple computers. I totally disagree with your thesis, though. I'm running Windows 7 right now on my Mac and it works VERY NICELY.
- Robert Scoble
I'm sure Windows 7 is working nicely, but Windows just doesn't compare to OS X. Mind you, I've only been using OS X for a year now. Before that I was a Windows/DOS user.
- Peter Kruit
Peter: again, I totally disagree. It's clear you haven't tried Windows 7 out on your Mac yet. There are many things in it that are nicer than Apple has. Especially the toolbar and especially Google Chrome.
- Robert Scoble
I have tried Windows 7. It's the same registry and DLL hell that it's always been.
- Peter Kruit
Agree with Scoble... Win7 has many things nicer than OSX.
- Adnan
Peter: I haven't had a problem with DLL hell and the registry for years. I guess you still trying to run VB 2.0 apps? ;-)
- Robert Scoble
1. Never put anything into the registery unless it will affect another part of the system. 2. DLL hell ended in Win98. WinXP/2000 added a way to solve all DLL problems with no rebooting, but the coders have been lazy/ignorant (see #1).
- xero
Yes, case in point- and that's a deal breaker for just about any Mac user.
- Dean Kakridas
from email
I switched to Macs 3 years ago but I have to say Windows 7 will make me rethink that decision. It is much more than a "Vista Service Pack".
- Steve de Mena
My husband has a Dell laptop and it's really nice, so I am definitely gonna check the Z out...
- Susan Beebe
Peter: It is possible to install MAC OSX on your Dell thanks to the OSx86 Project: http://wiki.osx86project.org/wiki... Although it may not be entirely legal this is still going to happen and Apple should roll with it and embrace the hacker culture. If this Dell can run Boot Camp (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki...), and give users the option of running either Mac or Vista that would be awesome!
- Garin Kilpatrick
Garin: that's possibly the ultimate manifestation of "lipstick on a pig"!
- Dean Kakridas

Dean: No way, Sarah Palin is the ultimate lipstick pig and Mac OSX on a Dell is cool!
- Garin Kilpatrick
Garin: that she is and might be the ultimate candidate for a Dell actually.

Is there some new synchronization feature using Microsoft's Mesh technology or something? Win7 is suppose to have some Mesh tech built-in.
- Jeff Weber
Dean: Haha! Jeff: Mesh is probably windows only syncing, but I have not investigated. I use http://www.getdropbox.com/ for syncing my files between my PC and Mac, and it works great!
- Garin Kilpatrick
interesting! Windows 7 indeed rocks... and yes - i own macs and pcs
- andy brudtkuhl
Damn hype and secrets are eating my brains clock cycles. Raises fist at Robert ;)
- Mark Essel
I hope you won't need to call Tech Support for it.
- Head Ov Metal
Doesn't look all that impressive to me. It's a Dell with Vista. Whoopty-do. *curmudgeon*
- Jason Huebel
Jason: it doesn't have Vista. Thanks for playing.
- Robert Scoble
any idea if this is a joint effort with the alienware talent they acquired?
- Trey Philips
Even so, it's a Dell with Windows. If it's touchscreen, great. Facial recognition? Bleh. Unless it runs on cold fusion and can predict the future, it's still just a Dell with Windows. That said, I love W7. But I love Mac OS X much more.
- Jason Huebel
Jason: let's talk after you see it. You might still be a Mac fan but you will at least pause after you see the secret stuff this does.
- Robert Scoble
I remember when Apple's PowerBooks had that rubbery/leathery black finish. Dell's bringing the PowerBook-y back, evidentally.
- Wade Dorrell
Fair enough. I believe you saw some things that really were impressive, so I suppose I can withhold judgement. I'm just naturally skeptical of "this is a Mac killer" or "this is an iPod killer" comments, since so many have tried and ultimately failed.
- Jason Huebel
Jason: You are right on. And furthermore, many have not even really "tried". Nothing out there that claims to even compete with Apple products have put close to the level of time, resource, and dollar investment in design and software that Apple has. Anyone who has been in the tech industry for the past 10 years now knows that there's Apple and then a bunch of pretenders and bad imitators.
- Dean Kakridas
from email
That's like saying I am throwing away my Mercedes for the new Chrysler. You still get Dell support and service which has forced me to find new vendors. Wish windows server products ran on os x server. Then we could go all mac hardware.
- Dan Douglass
from Nambu
I've never had a single problem with Dell support. Apple's on the other hand is useless. 10 working day repair time for a machine, compared to next business from Dell. Had to repair a failing disk ourselves because Apple wouldn't replace it, if tech tools said it was bad, 'tech tools isn't any good', and when disk utility said it was bad, 'tech tools is more accurate'. Wouldn't put anything important on Apple hardware or support.

The sync between iPhone and desktop on TweetDeck is a cool feature
- rshore
so far my favorite is Reportage. I have tweetdeck installed, but i find it difficult to read, not so with any other twitter client. TweetDeck remains on of my 2 favorite desktop clients, the other being the web client TwitZap.com
- Ralph Friedman
Tweetdeck if they can squash the bugs because the syncing is good news. Tie between Tweetie and Twittelator for now.
- Warner Crocker
Tweetie is favorite for best duplicating the desktop experience. But Tweetdeck has great potential with the syncing feature. It crashes too much right now.
- Curt Moss
I've been happy using twitterfon, but I've been playing with tweetdeck, it looks like I might have to switch, syncing is a killer feature
- Ken Power
I use Tweetie. The reviews I've seen of Tweetdeck make it seem a bit too much for the iPhone. Are those reviews wrong?
- Curt Mercadante
Tweetdeck is the only iPhone app for twitter
- planetMitch
I'm still sticking with Twitteriffic. I moved over to Twitterfon because it started lacking with features, but moved back when it finally got the update it so needed. Don't really know why i like it so much, just always have. Just wish they'd update the desktop version too.
- Simon Wicks
Photogene because I can brand my photos with a text bubble before I upload.
- Craig Shipp
Twittelator Pro: myriad of features including URL inline minification/expansion; configurable RT format, pic provider, URL minifier; copy&paste; saving drafts; tweet URLs from Safari; and many more. one of the best apps I have purchased.
- Dennis Homann
Has crashed when using its browser feature
- Mark Traphagen
My must have iPhone Apps are: > Tweetie > TwitterLink - Allows Safari URL Shortening via bookmarklets > TweetDeck Hopefully TweetDeck can incorporate a few of the missing compenents which are keeping me from dropping the other two apps.
- Josh
Still tweetie. Tried others as they emerge, but the familliar interface to a desktop client, search, find user, favorite, trends all make it very powerful. A rework of the RT vs. Via is in order, but I can live with that.
- Erik Boles
Definately TweetDeck since it's been launched
- Michiel Sikkes
TweetDeck on the iPhone looks great, but I think it's pretty buggy. I constantly get the same notifications displayed and my groups got messed up (and then synced back to the desktop). But I'm looking forward to the next version.
- Oliver Bouchard
Twitterrific without hesitating. Tried TweetDeck but still a little buggy in my opinion.
- Nuno Ferreira
I use Twitterific and I'm pretty fine with it/
- Parth Awasthi
Tweetie. And, judging from the desktop client, it's only going to get better.
- Justin Hileman
I like Tweetie, Twitterrific and TweetDeck but also Twittelator which has a 'Groups' function. Really just waiting for the Seesmic iPhone app which will hopefully sync with Seesmic Desktop a la TweetDeck.
- Nick Reynolds
Twittelator. No other iphone app is as feature rich as this one. It also works well with backgrounder (from cydia).
- Rohit
I actually use the FriendFeed mobile interface more than anything else to view twitter on my iPod, but after that I use twitterfon. As Taavi said above, it's simple and it works. Thinking about trying the tweetdeck though. My son has it and likes it.
- Alex Hellstrom
I went from Twittelator to Tweetie and now to Tweetdeck on iPhone. Tweetdeck is the best thing out there right now IMO for hardcore tweeting, However, Tweetie still rules as a simple, elegant, beautiful UI, client for everyone else.
- Dean Kakridas
Tweetie. TweetDeck for iPhone is nice and is a smooth port from desktop to smartphone, but Tweetie is cleaner to me, not as dark or cluttered.
- David Price
Alex: yeah I use friendfeed a lot more than other Twitter clients, even on my iPhone.
- Robert Scoble
i tried tweetdeck but i like Twittelator Pro more
- Crusader
Switched to Tweetdeck after using Twitfon and Twitterific
- Jim Haw
Tweetdeck, recent convert from tweetie. It crashes when you add someone to a group column is all.
- Jay McCormack
TweetDeck needs Ping.fm integration for selective posting..it feels the lightest of the iPhone Twitter apps and feature wise I think it may now be the most complete..2nd fave is Tweetie.
- George Dearing
I'm liking Tweetdeck also but I bounce around from Twitterific to Tweetie also. Like the multiple columns in Tweetdeck.
- Jeff Gamble
Definitely Tweetdeck.. I wish I hadn't paid for tweetie..
- Can Koklu
TweetDeck after using TwitterFon for a while. Never used Tweetie and probably won't now. Background notifications on the iPhone would be cool. I can use it for @replys or DMs.
- Rolf Schewe
Sadly, I don't have an iphone. Anyone know of a good free symbian app?
- Pranav Bhasin
still using tweetie - have tweetdeck if I need to reference through my groups. but when i am mobile i usually only have time to pay attention to replies and directs - so speed and such is more important. Tweetie wins for me.
- Tony
I like Tweetie. Nice streamlined interface. Although Tweetdeck is nice, I just haven't used it as much since it came out.
- John Fox
I am still using Tweetie but just installed TweetDeck.. seems cool.
- nickgs
Love new tweetdeck on iPhone but it's too crashy, darn it!
- Susan Beebe
No mention of Nambu here. I use that on MacBook. Anyone use their iPhone client? What do you like/dislike about it?
- Larry Hawes
Tweetie, until TweetDeck fixes stability and adds ability to bookmark links.
- Tech Introvert
I have tried Nambu but use Twittelator Pro and occasionally Twitterific. Tweetdeck would have to be exceptionally good to be better than either of those.
- Gilbert Harding
Tried Tweetdeck (which is my desktop app) on iPhone for a couple of days. Too fiddly. Went back to Twitterfon. Really compact and streamlined. Now trying out Flock on desktop instead if Firefox/Tweetdeck combo.
- Narain Jashanmal
Although I have been playing with tweetdeck these past few days, I would still vote for tweetie
- Thomas Chai
@Pranav Bhasin: Gravity is a good twitter app for symbian.
- Hugh Macdonald
I'm using Tweetie, but edging closer to trying Tweetdeck. Tweetie does do everything I need right now.
- Martha
TweetDeck! Used to be Tweetie, but TweetDeck is far better!
- Farrell Kramer
Nambu is cool, multiple accounts, persistent search etc, integrated with tr.im/pic.im, unfortunately friendfeed and facebook are still "currently disabled"
- Liviu Barbat
I use TwitterFon (nonPro), but have been trying TweetDeck out. It is a little buggy as so far it has crashed out everytime I have used it, but I know this is v1 so am sure it will get better. I actually really like the interface as it is very well thought out. My only other gripe is that you need to go into a tweet's detail to go to a hyperlink, as opposed to twitterfon (and tweetie...

Twitterrific 2.0 (The $4 Premium version). The UI is just spectacular. Combining all your replies and DMs in one stream, but still allowing them to be viewed separately, makes it really easy to interact with Twitter as a stream. Plus, more often than not, I find myself using the multi-post window to easily switch a DM to a reply, or vice versa. It's just great.
- David Chartier
Twitterrific 2.0 , tweetie and Tweetdeck in that order
- Wayne Sutton
TweetDeck, despite the occasional crashing, is my favorite right now.
- Paul Maez
Tweetdeck for sure. I like the feel and look of it.
- John Ford
Twitterrific and twitterfon for picking ppl across tweets to thank.

I use Tweetie. I tried TweetDeck but it crashed when doing what should have been simple operations.
- Michael Koby
Reportage has a very refreshing approach. I love it
- Guillaume Thoreau
oh Robert Robert... you should really add a poll to your threads from time to time :) as for your question: I have to say that TweetDeck is not my fav until someone new will launch a better app.
- Orli Yakuel
I use Nambu because of Friendfeed integration, but if TweetDeck gets this I would definitely switch
- Alberto Saavedra
from Nambu
Had Twitterific and TwitterFon for seperate accts, but TweetDeck is the best of the bunch.
- Dave Martinez
I bought Tweetie, but it seems limited after using other Twitter apps. My favorite is SimplyTweet, lots of features that work well and is being updated often.
- Brandon
from BuddyFeed
I was a Tweetie guy, but Tweetdeck may be replacing it for me.
- Joey Gibson
I played with TweetDeck and liked it, but I simply don't use all of the custom panel stuff that it does, so Tweetie does the job for me just fine. The UI is awesome, responsive and (above all) simple. It does exactly what I want and, more importantly, what I expect it to do.
- Brett Kelly
Tweetie : very stable and reliable. Does need a refresh but nice customization options make it for that.
- ashish
TweetDeck is my favourite app for the iPhone, although Tweetie is a close second. The sync feature and what I think is slightly better navigation through the different columns put TweetDeck ahead. TweetDeck is also free, which if I hadn't already bought Tweetie, may have had some importance.
- 321
I like Tweetie because if I get behind or want to see older tweets, I can just click "More" and it loads more of them. Can't figure out how to do that on the desktop version of TweetDeck, so I'm assuming teh iPhone version doesn't do it either.
- RobinDotNet
I like Tweetie. I tried the new TweetDeck and couldn't get into it. So my combo is seesmic on the desktop and Tweetie on the iPhone. We'll see what happens when seesmic introduces their iPhone app, though.
- Josh Asbury
Was twitterfon fan but the Tweetdeck groups sync is a winner.

I can't believe there people that will install this on their iPhone, is that bad then????
- Sebastiaan van den Akker
Well, I've got a standard, regular, clean, official iPhone. I cannot install it anyway. But it's amazing how much love and dedication people are putting into *creating* these themes.

Web 3.0, 2010 Web, Next Web, Real Time Web, what do you call it? And more importantly why? Here's my take on the whole thing: http://andreweglinton.com/post...
You already know my thoughts on this issue. Real Time Web is too limiting. There's other major trends cooking. The web is not a version number, let's get away from that. So, that leaves a few other choices.
- Robert Scoble
I prefer the "Web 2010" label. It does not impose too much and it's clearly definitional.
- Ralf Rottmann
I agree with Scoble, version numbers aren't effective. However, I don't think that labeling the web with a year is any more effective (too much like sports video games). I think the term should be generic, like the "progressive web"...where companies and individuals who adopt the newest tech are simply utilizing "progressive web techniques". The web is constantly progressing, far too fast for labels.
- Kevin Pruett
Kevin: That's exactly why I believe taking the year as a label is best. There likely will not be a single term (progressive, real-time, etc.) that describes it precisely. Looking back having a year attached can help as a reference point.
- Ralf Rottmann
Ralf: I see, I wasn't really thinking about referencing a particular web technology (or set of technologies) at a specific moment in time. Labeling the web with that particular year might do the trick, although much of the web and its progression is built on top of each other....so it would be difficult to pinpoint the technologies three years down the road, for example. But it definitely beats Web 3.0, that's for sure
- Kevin Pruett
Expiration is exactly what we need! Otherwise, everyone will just adopt the generic name and claim to be up to date, progressive, whatever, but with no real understanding of what it means, much less if they are actually accomplishing it! At least with a year attached, everyone will know when you've gotten old and grey in your technology.
- B Bagby
Personally I like the term Next Web to describe what new web applications that are continually coming; it will always be relevant to what is the latest. When talking about what will be mainstream next year - 2010 Web is what I would use. Currently the Next Web and 2010 web describe the same thing for the most part but by the time 2010 hits - 2010 web will not sound as cool.
- Robert Freeze
B Bagby: Definitely a lot of truth in that statement. I tend to use generic terms to try and avoid the gimmicky narratives of many slow-adopting companies. Ultimately, its the consumers that decide just how current their offerings really are.
- Kevin Pruett
I'm curious to find out what people think are the defining characteristics of the Web right now. I see a lot of vagueness here, is this a reflection of the fact that the Web is difficult to pin down and gaining in complexity all the time? Or is there something else behind this resistance? To me naming something is an act of ownership, that we can't name the Web means that we can't own...

Andrew: weird, something happened and it got smaller on my monitor too. I've reported that as a bug.
- Robert Scoble
Does Web 2010 imply we'll have Web 2011? Reminds me a lot of Windows 95 which was installed on desktops for a hellluva lot longer than 1 year (unfortunately.)
- Clay Newton
@Robert - thanks, I was just about to recalibrate my eyesight :)
- Andrew Eglinton
Clay: the web forces you to upgrade. Desktop OS's don't.
- Robert Scoble
I call it Google Wave! But seriously, I hate the year one (like Clay said, there isn't a new one every year). 3.0 is organized, but it isn't very descriptive; however, it doesn't really need to be when people understand it. But B Bagby has a good point: some will just say it as though it is progressive when in fact they are at an outdated stage. Real-time web is nice and descriptive,...

i prefer the term toothpick bird over these terms. why? i think some may be overthinking this classification. anything can be said against any of the terms. for instance, next web is a vague funneling to everything that follows to the future. realtime web implies an aspect. 2010 web implies a dated year that can become limiting shortly. web 3.0 may be too predictable & logical for some that they want another term to break outside the current thinking of web 2.0. sometimes it's easier to name in hindsight.
- sɹǝɥʇɐǝɟʞɔɐןq
I second 'toothpick bird'! [Note: blog post amended to include the toothpick bird!]
- Andrew Eglinton
toothpick bird is funny! Just after I saw a fail whale on Twitter, too. I think you're onto something!
- Robert Scoble
You all probably knew this but I had no idea that a Toothpick Bird was a 'fifties cocktail essential' and look the 2020 site are way ahead of us, they already knew about the Toothpick bird era of the Web 11 years ago!! http://www.2020site.org/toothpi... and does that owl belong to Shel Israel??
- Andrew Eglinton
++ Jamie, Brandon...Exactly, no need to complicate with meaningless labels
- Kevin Pruett
I was proposing "Web.next" the other day. As in "whatever the current web, we can make Web.next better". No numbers, no years, no structural or technical definition... I kind of liked this idea,..., since it were mine...

Quick question: If I add Picasa to my FriendFeed services, will it incorporate photos of all PUBLICLY viewable web albums or what is the criteria, since I cannot set a specific web album.
Well, I've uploaded tons of images to Picasa, so I'd likely stay with it. Thanks for responding anyway. Back to my question: Which images does FriendFeed grab from Picasa? All that are public?
- Ralf Rottmann
Ralf, I don't know the answer to that but I suggest that you create a private group, and test the picasa feed there. If it /does/ import private photos, then logout of your picasa a/c, and add the public rss using the "Custom RSS" service
- Ahsan Ali aka. Slick
Hi Ralf, FriendFeed will only import publicly listed albums (yes, all of them) from picasa. So you don't have to worry about unlisted or sign-in only albums showing up. Hope this helps!
- Ross Miller
I need to get one. Am happy with my current unibody MacBook Pro 15" but WANT the extended battery life...
- Ralf Rottmann
getting a second battery is pretty doable on the older macbooks, but I have to admit that this new battery life is the most alluring reason to upgrade.
- Vincent van Wylick
Looking good! Only problem so far is that your Blip.tv videos are .mov and don't play on iPhone or iPod when syncing from iTunes. Can you make future videos mp4? Looking forward to see how this evolves.
