The thing that may cause top bloggers to quit blogging is economic downturn. If the bloggers don't have to go do other jobs to pay the bills, they'll lose their usual audiences because either the audiences have to work more often or their jobs crack down severely on computer activity that isn't work related.

I agree that FF is feature-rich and while its learning-curve is steeper than Twitter, it's more immersive. Does everyone see value in twitter still or will it go the way of MySpace (random noise, company/product promotion)?

@Chris @ Daniel, I too ran the twitter2ff app two days ago and found that every time I do a massive Twitter-Following-Spree I get both a boatload of reciprocals but also a secondary wave -- from folks who I hadn't followed. Same hasn't been true for me on FF. I'm not sure there's any significance to that, but I've also just felt that people are quicker to follow on Twitter.

seems like the "value" of twitter followers decreases as people follow more and more people

Well, for one thing, we have near 2,233 people auto-following on SocialToo.com. Amongst those, there are near 2 million followers. So, near 2,233 people are automatically following you when you follow them. I'm sure that's only one factor though. Also, you have to follow them first to get them to follow you back.

@Deva and @Bob, my thinking is that if there is a statistic out there to be counted, people will find it. Also, I believe people are growing more comfortable with following many and not treating it like Facebook, etc.

I think 1-2% of real people are comfortable/capable of following many but most people are not and prefer water cooler style network news, dumbed down for the masses without having to think too much, perfect for the couch and no thought required

Followers are spiking, but if you read Darren Rowse's new blog TwiTip regularly, I GUARANTEE you'll see a noticeable spike in your followers. Darren Rowse is a preeminent authority on how to use Twitter.

I can't use the twitter2ff app because my own usernames differ on the two services. But I'm OK with that - Twitter is still mostly an afterthought for me. Friendfeed is my home base. Live and learn on the username thing, though. Personal branding fail.

I've seen a large uptick in followers which a large majority of are from FF so I do think that users here are heavily usin the Twitter2FF app. I'm glad they have too because I am now following many folks from here because of it.
