Anyone know of similarly-priced but more reliable alternatives to 1and1? I'm experiencing my third outage in less than 7 days with them, and their response to all this just plain sux, because they're not doing a thing other than to prop up a crappy web server.
I am currently out of commission with them as well, I think it might be a site-wide issue or at least multi-servers as we are on diff setups. My site went down earlier, your was still available for a while afterwards, I thought it was just going to be me. For the record, I have never had issues in about 4 years until now. - cmiper
I've had good experience with Register.com and GoDaddy - Sally Church via Alert Thingy
Bluehost.com seems to be down at the moment. I can't get to it. - Raoul Pop
I hear GoDaddy deletes domains at will when they get complaints. I'd rather not be in that sort of a situation. - Raoul Pop
They delete domains? I hadn't heard that! - Sally Church via Alert Thingy
Yup, it's back up now. - Raoul Pop
I was going to say "as is 1and1" but I see that's not the case for all of us...wonder what's going on. - cmiper
My site is "sort of" up at the moment. It's available, but slow. - Raoul Pop
Dreamhost wasn't bad for me; can't compare it to what I use now (Slicehost) but it was fine for me. - Benjamin Golub
I had a DreamHost account, and when I reported persistent issues with my sites there, one of their admins didn't like my tone and told me that if I didn't shut up, he'd close my account forcibly. Regardless of his subsequent apology, I left and never returned, nor would I ever recommend DreamHost to anyone else. - Raoul Pop
I also used to use DreamHost, it was good for a while but I began to have problems with it toward the end (mainly because of the limitations on access). I now use SliceHost and also have a MediaTemple Account. MediaTemple is a great point and click host and Slicehost gives as much control as you will ever need. The extra money is definitely worth it for either of these hosts. MediaTemple's customer service is fantastic. - Brandon Titus
About MediaTemple's customer service: once I forgot to check a box on setting up email for a site and was panicking so I called their customer support. The rep was extremely personable, asking where I was calling from, said he had never been there. I couldn't find my password or something but he told me to go ahead and ask my problem while I was looking for the password. He answered my problem before I ever found my password. - Brandon Titus
Sounds like pretty cool service, Brandon! My thanks to you and the others for the advice! - Raoul Pop
1and1 finally responded to my emails sent to complaints@1and1.com, and have told me that they've credited me for 1 month of web hosting. I replied and told them that 1 month of free hosting at the current level of reliability (3 web server outages in less than 7 days) is a gift I DO NOT WANT. - Raoul Pop
Bluehost is good, and I use it. But the problem with Bluehost (IMHO) is that they don't have Python 2.5 and they require a photo ID for SSH. - Rishabh Mishra (p248)
I feel for you guys that have to deal with these types of server outages. A couple of years ago I tried to run a hosting business that would provide high end hosting for the financial markets, but even these business level clients are expecting supreme support and less than $10 a month. I quickly learned all hosting is a commodity, most people don't care (or are not willing) to pay for additional support. So you end up with a bunch of vendors that throw up overloaded servers and try to make it in volume. - Mark Anderson
The doofuses at 1and1 have managed to let the web server crash one more time. I really think they're doing it on purpose to get rid of me, now that I'm beginning to use more resources, even though I'm not even using 10% of what they advertise. At any rate, I've signed up for an account at mediatemple, so we'll see if they turn out to be more reliable. - Raoul Pop
