"although both claimed they were with each other by mutual agreement. The man has been sentenced to six months in jail and his wife was found guilty of being his accomplice and given a lesser sentence of four months. "

"These are exclusive pictures to Reuters of a Canadian polar bear eating a cub that it killed and cannibalized. A global study released in 2008 suggests that climate change has turned some polar bears into cannibals. However, a local Inuit leader told journalists that a male polar bear eating a cub is a normal occurrence."

male cats sometimes will kill kittens in a litter. Jealousy? Insecurity?
- Rev. Dr. W!cKeD Rock
On a Planet Earth episode they mentioned that the only predator a mother polar bear has to worry about for her cubs is a male polar bear. I think it is a normal occurrence.
- Benjamin Golub
I think this is getting extra attention because it makes a good story apropos global warming. As Rev. above points out, tomcats often kill and eat freshly born kittens. It doesn't happen seldom, it's a matter-of-fact thing. But this too is probably caused by global warming, naturally...

Some male animals kill the young of other female animals so they'll go into heat and mate with that male.
- Shey, Jamaican of FF
I wonder if he washed it down with a nice, refreshing Coke?
- MVB (Grinch of FF)
Probably, with the reducing ice caps, this will happen more often because there's much more competition between males.
- João Almeida
Probably not, João Almeida. The adult male sees the cubs as potential rivals and dispatches them before they become a problem.
- MVB (Grinch of FF)
I agree with Benjamin Golub, I heard the same on Planet earth:Pole to Pole episode.
- ashish
Echoing João, probably it won't happen bc of competition, but because there's no damn place to hunt!
- 'Like' robot (frɐnc)
I think it's probably normal behavior too, unless they can measure an increase in the activity. Male animals have an incentive to kill rivals' offspring.
- John (a.k.a. dendroica)
The question would be is this increased above normal or maybe a survey of seal kill vs cub kill
- WarLord
Some guys will do anything to get out of child support.
- Spidra Webster
Some male animals kill cubs but they usually don't eat them. This is not normal. Their habitat is melting, and they are starving.

I'll point you again to my review of the Romanian healthcare system, which this article proves so well. My review is here: http://www.raoulpop.com/2009....
- Raoul Pop
Very pertinent article vis-a-vis my own review of healthcare in Romania and the endemic corruption in the state healthcare system, where you're required to bribe virtually everyone in the hospital if you're to get any care. More details here: http://www.raoulpop.com/2009....

Booted up my Windows VM, and have wasted the last 20 minutes with OneCare alerts, Java updates and Security Center alerts. It looks like I'll waste another 20 minutes before I get to do any of the work I needed to do inside Windows. This is why Windows sucks. Every time I boot up the VM, I have to deal with this crap.
I should probably start posting stuff when I'm happy, too. I'm not always grumpy, in spite of what people might think. But when stuff pisses me off, I tend to vent, loudly.

I can't believe how dumb some dogs can be. The damned idiots will go on barking for hours, pedigree or not. Where's a Star Trek stun gun when you need one?
it's usually not the dogs fault. A dog bred to hunt will never be happy in a yard every day and it will bark. A hound bred to run down predatory animals should bark and drive people crazy. Dogs are easy to breed for special tasks. The owners who do the research and buy a quiet breed are un-noticed but lumped in with the a-holes who buy a dog because they like the way it looks.
- Gary Fredrick
I blame the owners, too, they're the root of the problem. I know you gave the hound dogs as an example, but these aren't hound dogs. The dogs that PO-ed me tonight happen to be German shepherds. And there are countless other examples, most of them mutts. This might help offer you some background on my frustration:...

when I was growing up in the city I remember there were packs of wild dogs. It happened to be close to being one of the most politically corrupt city governments in the nation. I'm sorry to hear that where you're living, dogs are a menace. Feral dogs are dangerous.
- Gary Fredrick
I should say the guy made it harder for himself when he refused to identify himself and say why he was taking photos, and what sorts of photos he was taking. A little bit of courtesy would have gone a long way. Still, threatening to submit someone to the FBI's hit list and calling him a terrorist photographing for the Al-Qaeda just isn't right. Plus, if you're in law enforcement and you're spouting off about the London bombings, you ought to know their specific details, not state fiction as fact.
- Raoul Pop
Yeah, they're a lot of fun. Kind of tough to photograph though, without a good camera and a fast lens. Those fish just refuse to hold a pose while I take their photo. :-)
