Mahendra: probably not. - Robert Scoble
That seems like a good idea, but I think you're already following a lot of these people - Carlton Prest
Seyfi: why don't you follow me and see how it goes? - Robert Scoble

Mahendra, you're not following the threads in Russian (that's my only hint) :D - Micah Wittman
Robin: oh yes. But I'm never sure what's worse. the people who just want to talk about the numbers or the people they may be able to impress. - Rachel Clarke
Aaman - Friendfeed doesn't make link-tracking easy, so it's less interesting for spammers to infest. - Mahendra (SkepticGeek)

@Micah: Oh, good I don't read Russian! :) - Mahendra (SkepticGeek)
Scoble: you convinced me! (thought you just needed self-validation, sorry) - Derek Pangallo
Derek: heh, yeah, I am watching this, among other things running across my screen. - Robert Scoble
Robin: Facebook is the same but I think to a lesser extent - it's harder to find people I think. But still got a load of friend requests that I ignore as I don't know them - Rachel Clarke
Robin: you mean like people you went to high school with and didnt' like adding you on FB - Derek Pangallo
I already do. what i mean is if we don't keep FF, Twitter limited to our interests, wouldn't it be garbage we already try hard to get rid of. Or how far can we extend our interests in life or amount of information we consume? - Seyfi Erol
Derek -- I mean people I really have NO connection with at all. I've only friended a couple of people I work with, and 2 other real friends. I'm getting friend requests from people I don't know at all. - RobinDotNet
Seyfi: you haven't discovered FriendFeed's groups and lists yet, have you? - Robert Scoble

I'm the spammer u follow alrdy HA! - Rich Weaver
Did you know that Facebook has started selling parts of itself to the Russians? At end of May, they sold 1.96% stake of Facebook to Russia's Digital Sky Technologies for $200M. - RobinDotNet
Robert: I shouldn't have underestimated you. You probably have started much longer comment threads on Friendfeed before. - Mahendra (SkepticGeek)
Mahendra, Robert, I agree, FF has been very good at keeping out junk - Aaman (Clone of FF)
Micah: Uh, wow! - Mahendra (SkepticGeek)
Mahendra: I have. I gave away $5,000 once and got more than 1,000 comments on that. But that cost me a lot of cash. Can't afford to do that again. - Robert Scoble
DST is run by Alisher Usmanov who is closely tied with Putin. You feel ok to that, but re-read the company's user agreement where it says it can share all of your info with third parties. Of course, it's irrelevant to this thread, but I thought it was interesting. - RobinDotNet

John: there are lots of interesting topics here on FriendFeed. Did you know you could search by them based on number of likes? Click "Advanced Search" and try. - Robert Scoble
John: Nope. Twitter's 'bout Trends, FF's 'bout Friends. - Mahendra (SkepticGeek)

Why are you doing this? You have one of the best listening audiences on twitter! Is there a point to prove that we will post here or go to wefollow? - David Cole
Now those not on FF will miss this one;) - JP Holecka - Jaypiddy
David: actually that's not true. Most of the Twitter audience I had has moved over here. - Robert Scoble
I'm intrigued and will watch with interest -- and hey, you're always interesting. Well worth the follow! - Don Tamihere
real-time on FF is awesome - nchenga
David: and I can prove that. Twitter's audience has become less and less engaged lately. - Robert Scoble
Wow, powerful shift by Robert Scoble, I'm really interested in seeing how this works for you Scoble. I slept through all the big news here tonight. - Jimminy Fuller
Always up for your social explorations Robert. - JP Holecka - Jaypiddy
And you're not even halfway through the unfollowing process. :) - Ken Brady
wao, let's good. - naokits
Interesting experiment. This is probably one the most commented feedfriend threads in history! - Menno te Koppele
Plus, David, if you all are listening, you are listening because of my ability to find cool stuff. Mostly that's been because of FriendFeed over the past 18 months. Now I've seen how ascerbic Twitter's spammers have gotten on my accounts. - Robert Scoble
agree, it's an interesting experiment. - nchenga
Menno: actually it's not. There are many 1,000+ comment threads here. - Robert Scoble
Here's a search with all 1,000 comment threads displayed: http://friendfeed.com/search... - Robert Scoble
Interesting. This is going to boost 1000 egos for sure :-) - Freddie Benjamin
So will it be a matter of just trying to say ahead of the spammers by jumping from one early adopted social network to another? - JP Holecka - Jaypiddy
JP: no. I am not leaving Twitter. I AM, however, deleting all their accounts so I will no longer be passing them juice. - Robert Scoble
I wonder how will your FF homepage look like after this. - ahmet bulent
Does this make you anti-social media? - Cory Brown
To follow commenters from here on Twitter will be a lot of work for you Robert. Or do you have some magic tool that helps? - Tibor Holoda
Robert, how many of the 100k do you think you'll still be following when you are done? - RobinDotNet
~~~> Robert!! Follow me back again. [a] I'm a real fan of the @Scobleizer... and [b] I'm much nicer than some of these sassy bloofers. ;) - Kim Sherrell
1,100 - Robert Scoble
That's good to know. - George Hall (Australia)
So what if you have all 58k + comment on here? And you have to keep everyone! And your plan is foiled, sir. Okay give or take 10k for the neglected abandoned twitters and the spammers. Btw, you're already following me on both twitter and here. But come on, you're not really. : / - Lise
That's cool. I am finding the spammers too much to manage these days myself. - JP Holecka - Jaypiddy
I promise I want tell them - Noel Kelly
Because I can't keep myself from doing math, that's 1.1%. - RobinDotNet
Lise: I see you a few times a day, but you're right. Heheh. - Robert Scoble
Are you trying to make a point about FF v Twitter? I have spammy things to say about my amateur photography, potential homelessness, and run-ins with public-run health system in the US. Isn't all Twitter spam--just spam you want? :) - Dean Hall
the auto-refresh on this thread is mind-blowing, fun to watch - nchenga
Do you ever worry about SM burnout Robert? How do you pace your self? - JP Holecka - Jaypiddy
Interesting to note many of most commented threads are in languages other than English. Can we suggest FF has a better international appeal than Twitter? - Kaan Bingol
Good idea, as you say, stop juicing up the spammers - it'll be interesting to see the stats once you've finished. - Andrew Piggott
Dean: your Tweets aren't spam. I might keep you. Heheh. - Robert Scoble
I only followed people who were interesting to me, otherwise it is like trying to find a needle in a haystack of brain dumps. - Daniel Durrans
Exactly. So I expect to be cut. And considering I'm in a crowd of close to 60k, it'll be the same thing. - Lise
There should be a counter in front of the comments... - Willem Karssenberg
okay seriously ? - Asankhaya Sharma
What sort of comments do you want Robert? - Travis Koger
Lise: actually no. On FriendFeed I can absorb quite a few more people than on Twitter thanks to Groups. - Robert Scoble
a good cleansing is wise once in a while :) Power to the (real) people. - Benjamin
Travis: I'm already following you. - Robert Scoble
Lise: and because FriendFeed's search engine is better here too. - Robert Scoble
Robert, yeah I know. Thought you might have meant for your secretscoble twitter account ;) - Travis Koger
It's kind of like a giant SM break up Robert. *Oh the hearts you are breaking...* - JP Holecka - Jaypiddy
I'm fairly selective about who I follow and I follow so maybe you will follow me back! - Richard Cunningham from iPod
Robert, care to explain how you use groups in this kind of context? Because I don't get the point of following people who are then placed into a "I don't read this much" kind of group. How do you use groups so that you're (1) not overwhealmed, and (2) actually read what people are saying? - Ian Betteridge
How many people do you expect to end up with, Robert? What is a reasonable number? - Lise
You don't have to follow me on Twitter. I think the FriendFeed party palace is mighty fine. - Josette Torres from fftogo
(Not that I'll probably see your response, btw - something at the bottom of 350+ responses is effectively buried until FF has better threading tools. Which I'm sure it will, some day.) - Ian Betteridge
@Ian I believe that it may come in Google Wave. - JP Holecka - Jaypiddy
@Daniel - ditto, and for me it is generally development related also. Robert - I know you have to try and keep up with everything going on in the social media space, but I'm always surprised when people follow so many others as it must be extremely difficult to find the wheat in amongst all the chaff. - Donald Matheson
Robert: I did not know about that search trick. Thanks! - Menno te Koppele
looks like a lot of comments - Rory Partalis
Ian: a "I don't read this much" kind of group is awesome for serrendipity. Also, anyone who I find there who is high value gets quickly moved to a smaller group. - Robert Scoble
What? Are you saying you're not following me already...? ;-) - Jarno Peschier
Lise: on Twitter? Less than 2,000. I can't follow more. - Robert Scoble
Done. :) - Smeerch
Jamo: I am already following you. Scott: why not? I am already following you too. - Robert Scoble
Robert, it might be a problem for me re-gaining your following as my tweets are not 100% English only (whether that means trying to speak English or no English at all ;). How do you deal with occasional non-English tweeters? As that's clearly a noise for you. - Tibor Holoda
if only twitter were as engaging as FriendFeed has become, and as instantaneous as things like this comment thread, then maybe I would use it more. Hence why I'm all for unfollowing who you conceive as uninteresting; and if that includes me, then so be it! - Nick Soden
Tibor: I just skip over most of them. Sometimes I translate them to see if I was right. - Robert Scoble
It is my hope that I provide you with something as interesting as what you provide me with. Either way, I will continue to peruse your posts with interest. - James (!?)
hmmm - imran
Hi, I'm still newish to this social media thang - but good on you for taking a stand. - Jus
Do you prefer night owls? Because what about all the poor people in SV who went to bed at a decent hour and missed your post? Bummer for them, huh? - RobinDotNet
I'm back from picking my wife up at the airport and ran across this on my way back to sleep. - nuBound CEO - Mark
shhhhh - Luigi Filograna
Robin: heh, all the real geeks in SV are still up. - Robert Scoble
Interesting idea. I firmly believe SEOs are working day and night to figure out FF. - Ian Ceicys
Ian: I bet they are too since FF is starting to pull better on Google than Twitter is. - Robert Scoble
I am such a sheep. @markmeyerphoto - Mark Meyer from iPhone
I have nothing interesting to say, don't follow me. - burc sahinoglu from BuddyFeed
what about me? ... sniff - Andy Ghozali
Me me me ;) - Alemsah Ozturk from iPhone
looking for owls? - Dave Senior
Well I am out for the night. Good luck on your mass un-follow Robert. I look forward to your report on the results. - JP Holecka - Jaypiddy
Robert, this is looking like a long thread already. :) - Robert Miller
Andy, Alemsah, and Dave, I'm already following you. - Robert Scoble
Do you consider FF to be less spammy if you are trying to find your new Twitter "friends" here? - Dušan Šimonovič
Dusan: are you a spammer? - Robert Scoble
lmao on here you are, not on the big T tho nevermind I will follow you there too, been a fan.... - Andy Ghozali
bold and yet gutsy move...love the trending topic already! - Feersum Engine
Follow on FriendFeed or Twitter? :P Or Google Rader? :P - Qbat
Türkçe ne diyor arkadaş ? - Sinan İŞLER
The wild and woolly blogosphere is replete with all sorts of good stuff. Hard to follow 500 people, let alone 1000. I applaud you for trying to take the reins. - Jack B
hey there - deadmanwriting
And will you unfollow me if I send a DM ;)? - Sudar
I don't get it - Sheldon Levine
Qbat: I'll follow here on FriendFeed. Sheldon what don't you get? - Robert Scoble
Sudar: no, if you send me DMs here, that's good. - Robert Scoble
How long is the unfollow process going to take? And do you think FF will have as much noise as Twitter? - Duc Nguyen
So it's Twitter DM that you don't like? - Sudar
Sudar: right. - Robert Scoble
I'll make one comment and raise you two more. :) - Bryan Lee from iPhone
And will you follow me? don't know if you ever have, but I am following you on twitter. - Jus
Hey, Thanks for following me - Michael_techie
Would love your company, Robert. - Daniel Zarick from iPhone
Even worse is Twitter DM spam, of course. - Dennis Jernberg
It funny you put spammers, SEO experts, bots, social media experts all in one bucket. What are you implying? Btw, I'm none of these... - Peter Chee
.. and it works!! Just got a mail saying Robert is following me now... :) - Sudar
Peter: I did that to piss off the SEO experts. :-) - Robert Scoble
This makes me realise that posting from Twitter as opposed to "to twitter from FF" allows the Twitter stream to grow on the back of FF comments ! otherwise not : as in my case - what do you think Robert ? FF to Twitter ? Or FF aggregating all your tweets ? - Nicholas Paul Gordon from iPhone
Nicholas: shhhh, you are discovering my secrets! I'm doing more and more from FriendFeed lately. - Robert Scoble
I comment and you follow me. Its totally worth it - Arvind
Do I have to follow you too? :) - Mobilepax
Arvind: even better I was following you before. Mobilepax: no. I really don't care about followers. Inbound is more important than who is listening to you. - Robert Scoble
and does that mean I have to write in English from now on :) - Mobilepax
Awesome. I'm the 439th commenter. :D - Jhay Rocas
Mobilepax: no. I translate interesting posts to English. - Robert Scoble
More than 400 comments in about 2 hrs. Not bad. I wonder if there'd be nearly as many twitter responses/mentions. - Franz Binder
Franz: no way. Not even close. - Robert Scoble
Nice one - it's cool that you give friendfeed (and all the commenters of course ;-) much kudos. - Alex Vermeule (@alexve)
If you just follow everyone in this thread, won't you just wind up with noise from 'engaged' people. I mean, does this solve the problem? - Missionary Broadcasting
Good thing its 4am and my car alarm went off, otherwise you wouldnt follow me! I had to look up a video online how to break the key fob apart becuase aparently its battery leaked and was self activating the panic switch. Damn VWs! a replacement key is only like 150 bucks!! - Charlieray
Missionary: no. You have not discovered that FriendFeed has groups and MUCH BETTER search. - Robert Scoble
Its funny that if you say "SEO" on twitter its an instant 10 followers - Charlieray
A friendfeed promotion experiment? - John Mandia from iPhone
What is a comment? - Meriç Dağlı
I'd rather follow you on Friendfeed, Robert. Your tweets get cross posted here anyway, and there's a much greater sense of engagement in that conversation than there is over at Twitter. - Andrew Terry
John: no. Meric: you just made one. - Robert Scoble
John: I've been promoting FriendFeed for 18 months. Where have you been? - Robert Scoble
FF rocks :o) - Cowan Group
Everyone that "follows" you really does know you love FF. So did you build a tool to follow everyone back that comments on here or are you seriously going to manually follow people back? - Peter Chee
Theres 451+ comment here, do you really follow *everyone*? - Fajar Nurdiansyah
woohoo! I'm in :P - Tim Bergman
Because I am up at 1:20 a.m. PT, why not... I must be your target audience then. - Georgiana Comsa
It must show you how many people enjoy engaging with you Robert, with the number of people posting here. - Steve Farnworth
Amazing to see the comment thread to this entry expand constantly in real time. - Christian Bolstad
Peter: I've manually followed everyone on this thread so far. - Robert Scoble
Peter: although to be fair I've already followed quite a few people who have commented here. - Robert Scoble
Hi, you are already following me. My solution to get rid of spammers on Twitter is to block them, that is what I do. If everyone started blocking them, I think things would improve - Asgeir
Are you going to sleep tonight, or watch the fun?:) - Aaman (Clone of FF)
is that enough to get followed? - Ouriel Ohayon
do I accumulate credit, maybe towards an afterlife? You are already following me :-) - Anindya Chatterjee
really anyone? :D - Francesco Marconi
What about the SEO experts who accidentally find this feed? - phil baumann
Robert, but you're following commenters here, not on Twitter, right? Not that i care about Twitter that much, as for me it's just a pipeline. FF and FB are conversational platforms for me, or the places i hang out these days. - Tibor Holoda
Spammers being blocked doesnt do anything as they are hoping for that 1 in 100 hit of someone clicking that link, eventually they get banned and create a new account. - Charlieray
Aaman: Sleep? some of us are just starting the day. We're waiting for the US to go to sleep so we can talk about you ;-) - Rachel Clarke
the term SEO expert is a crock of shit - Charlieray
like that's gonna work... - thinkingpot
I hope you like hype machine loved tracks. - Neil Godfrey
FriendFeed is better only if U want feedback and have the time to check it out. - Marko Dvornik
Hello from the UK... - robkeynes
Marko: not true. It's better because it has very little spam. It's better because it has a better search engine. It's better because it has comments and likes. It's better because it's an aggregator. And more. - Robert Scoble
you don't have to follow back. but i'll take the chance to say great work with building 43. - Alexandre Gamela from twhirl
where's the 'hide button'??? :-D - Massimo MaxKava Cavazzini
Massimo: right up top. Heheh. Alexandre: thank you! - Robert Scoble
After 6 months out of the social media loop I came back to a whole bunch of follows that I either couldn't remember who they were or why I had followed them - how can that be relevent? So, I culled my follows back to less than 200. I'm now just looking to find the signal amongst the noise. - Colin Walker
What about FriendFeed? Is there any @notsecretscoble too? - Ludwik C. Siadlak
Friendfeeding for Scoble to follow me while on vacation in Montauk. There is something wrong with me. - Mitchell Schneider
Mitchell -- you just don't want to miss the fun. - RobinDotNet
robkeynes -- nice to see you up and about - RobinDotNet
Ludwik: no, because here I can just start a new list of users. - Robert Scoble
Well, this has been fun to watch, but it's almost 2 a.m. and I have to be very smart tomorrow morning, which is easier when I'm not too tired, so everyone have a great [whatever comes next in your time zone]. - RobinDotNet
Robert, I'm trying to understand this follow/unfollow strategy you are applying as Napoleon Bonaparte on a battle field ;) Interested to know the result - Thierry R. Andriamirado
pushing this thing to its limits just to see what happens? interesting. - livefast
I really do think the way Twitter has changed in the last few months, with all the media attention, certainly begs for it to be used differently now. - Nicola Quinn
SEO what?! :) - Kobayashi
Wow that's a whole lot of people commenting in the last 2 hours, Rob - How many of the new people you are following from this list are NEW to friendfeed? (estimate?) - Roy Herrod
i'm new! - Luigi Filograna
Roy: 40% - Robert Scoble
Does this constitute a comment or are you looking for some insightful commentary on the state of new media? ;) - Iwan
40%? This must have turned out to be one of the biggest promotions in FF history, even if it wasn't intended that way. BTW, I'm new to FF too. - Dennis Jernberg
guess it's good to clean up the list once in a while. - shadow
Ha ha, nice.... So any major ramifications from the mass unfollow? - Alistair (alpinefolk)
Alistair: other than losing about 1,000 followers so far? No major ramifications. - Robert Scoble
Robert, I'm coming out with a project in the Continuing Medical Education field in the next weeks so if you are interested, I wouldn't mind if you will follow me :-) - Marco Fabbri
Won't tell anybody, specially Seo people, ssshhhh..... - Giorgio Burlini from iPhone
No comment ... :) - Charlie Anzman
Too late. - Alex Gonzalez
You had me at don't tell the spammers... - Sean Kelly
I think it's a hoot. Now I'm wondering whether to reverse my recent move towards following more, not less. I do believe that from my experience so far FF is more attuned to building/maintaining community than is Twitter. - Des Walsh
Great move Robert - I like it a lot - Robert Davies
Des: on FriendFeed you can do both strategies at the same time. You can follow a lot more in one list while following even fewer in another. - Robert Scoble
Des - Once more people re-engage in the conversation here, they'll realize the continuing outright potential of Friendfeed. I still some here before I read my e-mail - Charlie Anzman
Hi Mr Scoble, I'm with you (but on a smaller scale) I unfollowed about 150 users on Friday, felt good! I pretty much hang out in FF now at my home page and my groups - Lee from iPod
wow...just wow :) Robert, you have many fans !! - Hayk H.
Good luck on hiding from the bots, they have ways of finding people.... :) - Chris Holm
well, who am I to refuse such a nice offer? here I am!!! - niccolò vecchia
Good to hear! I have only ~2000 followers, but I can't follow more at the moment due to Twitter's follow limit rule. - Martin Lindeskog
I can't resist. skeptical, however. - thinkQuick
Robert maybe the effort to get to 1 million is too great?? LOL Look forward to being in special company - Wayne Mansfield
lol! ;-) - auro
Following for the sake of it - Rudi
follow, unfollow. it's all work... - punkwithgun
Great way to test the chemistry between FF and Twitter. I like it. - E-Advocate Network
Robert - I'am definitely not a spammer when it comes to broadcasting anything to people, who doesn't want to hear it :) but I do sometimes respond (mostly on twitter so @reply) to some tweets not aimed on me, but that's what everybody actually asks for when publicly broadcasting anything. - Dušan Šimonovič
Lovely. - Kevin Montgomery
Scoble is a superstar :) - Peter
Woohoo. :) - mjc
Enjoy your tweets - Keith Humphreys
Domo arigato, Mr. Roboto. Himitsu o shiri tai. (Secret secret. I've got a secret.) - Rich Puskarich
Shhh...don't tell anyone but I'm neither of those (the spammers, SEO experts, the bots, or the social media experts,) though, I like the heck out of the concept of this thread... - Vincent Wright
@euaneggs :) - Euan Rowlands
Good idea about the unfollow. It was an interesting experiment whilst it lasted but given your lifestyle I'm sure most Twitter messages just passed you by. I never DM'd you however, it was nice to think that I had the option if I wanted to. Anyway I've been on FF for ages now, and what I need is a good FF app (for pc), any ideas anyone? - Nick Bristow
Nick: I just use a browser with FriendFeed. - Robert Scoble
Only 530 comments so far? Come on people you are not even trying. - John Cooper
FIRST... well almost - Rhys Amos from iPod
oh,i'm 538? - M∂hmood
hello hello! - May Wong
I am really curious to check the result of this experiment... - Alessandro Galetto from twhirl
Good to know. Scoble is a superstar. - jaspio
@Rob Sellen, did you see the comments on the most recent ffundercats podcast entry. http://friendfeed.com/ffunder... Over 1000 in a very short period of time. Although I expect that this post will also get up to those levels. - Travis Koger
Ah Scoble allways busy. - erwin blom
If you use Yahoo or Hotmail for email instead of Gmail I am curious and have one question: why?
TextEdit_001.png
I use Gmail and Yahoo mainly, for mail. Yahoo plus comes with my ISP and has some nice features that Gmail doesn't... AddressGuard and an alternate address being the primary ones. - LogEx
I don't have the citation handy but I read an article that showed that Yahoo! was quite far ahead of Gmail as far as UI features go. - Akiva Moskovitz
I have yahoo too b/c of filckr and yahoo pipes...but wouldn't if it was just for email. - Mike Bracco
The CRAZY thing is that you have to pay to be able to use POP with Yahoo email...pure craziness. - Mike Bracco
I'd be hard pressed to give up Yahoo if my ISP stopped providing the premium version for no extra cost. - LogEx
Logical: your ISP pays for a premium Yahoo email account? - Mike Bracco
Yeah (AT&T)... so I get 11 POP accounts and the other features without added cost. It may be a grandfathered thing, I'm not sure. - LogEx
Logical: oh cool, didn't know that happened, good to know. - Mike Bracco
I have a hotmail address, but I check all the mail to it via my Gmail account - LANjackal
Just haved used yahoo since 99 - orionstarr
Maybe it's just me being a tech elitist and I apologize if I sound that way but when I get an email or someone gives me an address that's a hotmail address - I immediately stereotype them as non-technical and not really with it. - Mike Bracco
I have an old Yahoo account for backup purposes only. - Mathew™ one of a kind
@Mike: Same here. If you give me a Yahoo or MSN/Hotmail address I immediately discount you, lol. - LANjackal
LANjackal: good, I'm not the only one...haha....if it's an aol email it's even worse!!! - Mike Bracco
My main email is Gmail. I still use my yahoo.com.br account which always had free POP. And I still have a hotmail account that receives some traffic from time to time but I dread having to open and read it. I find it hard to get rid of accounts and actually good sometimes to have different accounts for different things. - Michel Goldstein
You're discounting a lot of people. Yahoo! + Hotmail combined make up a staggering percentage of all email users. - Mistletoe Glen
@glenc: We know that, I assure you lol - LANjackal from IM
Glen: A lot of people also watch American Idol and The Hills on MTV - I don't find them quite that compelling though - however, the masses do. just saying that mass use doesn't equal quality :) - Mike Bracco
@Mike: Don't really watch The Hills but LC is my favorite female celeb by any measure - LANjackal from IM
LANjackel: not sure if I would say my favorite female celeb but I like - http://partyhopper.typepad.com/photos... - Mike Bracco
@Mike: :P - LANjackal from IM
I use all three and there's several reasons why. 1) I need more than one account 2) Each company owns different components of the web which I use. For example; I have a Yahoo account to access Flickr and the mail just comes with it. 3) I can't get into my original Gmail account (long story) which had my preferred username, so I opened an account at live.com where my name was available.... more... - Michael Fidler
One other thing; I've been using Hotmail since the day they opened and long before Microsoft even thought of purchasing them, so there's an element of loyalty involved. I should use my Gmail more,but it's so important to me, that I'm overly cautious when it comes to giving it out. - Michael Fidler
Next to Gmail I use Live/Hotmail for the Live services, Messenger, 25GB skydrive (in combination with Gladinet Cloud Desktop http://is.gd/14jrS ), downloading Windows 7 etc. Recently opened a Yahoo account so I could use Flickr. - Willem (@wim66) ☠
I have a gmail account for email that I want to see, my Yahoo mail is for mail that I want to receive but don't need to see it daily - Kim Landwehr
I migrated from Collegeclub to Yahoo to Gmail. I still have an account with Yahoo but prefer Gmail's conversation mode of viewing the web. I'll still send emails from Yahoo on occasion. ... Want to really think someone is anti-tech? My roommate has a COMPUSERVE email account. - Miss Elle
That reminds me: in addition to AT&T dsl making me migrate their email to yahoo, I had an old yahoo account before then (checks account): only 254 new messages! - Steve Lowe
oops. 506 new ones, all spam or newsletters/catalogs I signed up for. my bad. guess I should get rid of that account - Steve Lowe
Flip Video Ultra HD makes its unofficial debut, gets unboxed
Notable niceties include an HDMI output, 120 minutes of record time (up from 60 minutes), a removable / rechargeable battery and support for AA cells in a pinch. We're still waiting for the full rundown of specifications (and the price, too), but feel free to tap the read link for a stellar unboxing in the meanwhile. Update: Looks like it's going for $199.99. Thanks Matthies! - Michael Fidler from Bookmarklet
Crap! I just bought a Flip Mino HD not two months ago for $209. - Joey Gibson
How is it? - Michael Fidler
Gotta tell you guys. I've been playing with a Creative Vado HD which some have reviewed as having better video quality than the Flip. I've then compared that to the HD movie mode that my Panasonic TZ5 is capable of and it's much better. Especially in low light. Furthermore the Panny is also an excellent camera, has image stabilization, and a 10x optical zoom even in video mode. Oh, and... more... - Mark Krynsky
Gah, I just bought a Flip HD for $200 a few weeks ago. - Stephen Mack
Mark, I just asked someone the same thing. I've heard mixed things about the Vado, but for the most part it was well received. The Panasonic is another story. I'm very interested to learn more about it. Thanks - Michael Fidler
Michael...my guess is that the video mode of the Panny is better than the Flip HD based on what I've seen. I'd be more than happy to do a shootout with someone who has a Flip. - Mark Krynsky
Want .. now. - Charlie Anzman
Mark, What about the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ28K 10MP Digital Camera. It's only a couple bucks more, but has a higher resolution for photography, and a couple of other features, Do you currently have one? - Michael Fidler
I just bought a Canon HF10 which I got cheap since it's been replaced by the '09 models. I like these well enough, but I like a camera that looks like a camera (and it's 1080P). - Derrick
Yes, I also have the FZ-28 and am very happy with it as well. It has the same HD movie mode. I bought the TZ5 for my wife. If you get one just be careful to buy the right SD card fast enough to handle the video mode. I recommend the Kingston Class 6 card. I bought an Adata class 6 only to find out these cards aren't created equally despite the ratings and it errored on recording. - Mark Krynsky
So many gadgets! Maybe I'll buy my fiancee one :) - jcunwired
Thanks Mark, I've been putting off buying one for a month now. But, I'm ready to buy one tomorrow. I still want a high end camera, but this should do the job until I 'm ready. Thanks for the memory tip, too:-) - Michael Fidler
Here's a CNET review of all the pocket video cams out http://bit.ly/2BzwJ - Michael Fidler
FZ-28 is the best choice in the price range - 250-300, but if you can wait until June, and have a few hundred bucks more, the Panasonic GH1 will be THE ticket to ride. After seeing the GH1 sample videos coming out of Japan this weekend (just released there), I wish I had saved up and waited. There's big debates on forums comparing the pros and cons to the Canon 5d Mark II. The very fact that it is even debated is HUGE!! - Adrian
Adrian...I totally agree on the FZ28. I had considered possibly upgrading to the Canon SX1 IS after hearing it was finally going to be released in the US but then have heard that the video mode has some defective issue. The Panny GH1 sounds very interesting to me but that means I move into the DSLR world which I'm not sure I"m ready for. I'll have to look into it more once it is realeased. What forums do you frequent for info? - Mark Krynsky
FYI...I love Dpreviews.com and here's the preview of the GH1 http://www.dpreview.com/news... brief hands-on here http://www.dpreview.com/news... - Mark Krynsky
What surprised me last friday was when I was shopping at Costco, I saw the Flip there...for $199! I was really tempted to buy one. - imabonehead
Mark, Dpreview is generally the spot for info, here is a link for a debate on GH1 vs 5DmkII http://www.dvinfo.net/conf... - Adrian
Is it true that none of the flip cams have anti-shake? - KyleHase from twhirl
Kyle: I believe that to be true. I use mine on a monopod which makes it a lot better. - Robert Scoble
The fz28 has anti shake and decent continuous auto focus as well as an awesome Leica lens for a few bucks more. Won't fit in your pocket though. - Adrian
Thanks for the info Robert. Doesn't having to carry a monopod defeat the purpose of buying a tiny camera? :) - KyleHase from twhirl
The TZ5 has anti-shake and will almost fit in a pocket and should have about the same quality as the FZ28. - Mark Krynsky
Interesting.... - Do Young Min
@mark, good point, the tz5 would then make an ideal pocketable cam/corder - Adrian
I recorded video while holding both the the TZ5 and Creative Vado simultaneously so I could compare quality. I'll see what I can do about posting video for you guys to see the difference. - Mark Krynsky
That would be great! - Michael Fidler
I've always thought these were ripoffs since you can get a digicam that has optical image stabilization, optical zoom, and could actually take photos too :). But most current gen digicams record to MJPEG which creates HUGE files. If you want to upload to youtube, you'd have to re-encode or else the upload would take forever. Also, most digicams use a CCD sensor and recording lights/sun causes purple lines. The Flips use a CMOS sensor which doesn't have that effect but then it gains the wobbly rolling.. - Rodfather
.. shutter effect too. So there's give and take for either. - Rodfather
I agree. If I could add one feature, it would be image stabilization. It hard to take a nice shot without a tripod. I borrowed a friends regular flip, and the upload to YouTube was a breeze. There's a lot to be said for that kind of convince. - Michael Fidler
Here's a low light video with my FZ28. Download the original near bottom right for full effect... http://vimeo.com/4068287 - Adrian
I don't think it's a fair to compare a Flip vs a SuperZoom camera. The Flips are made for dead simple operation and pocketability. You don't have to take out an SD card to transfer files since it has a USB jack. The FZ28 should have better quality since it has a huge lens. But like it said before, once you shoot at light, the video is ruined. Plus it records to mjpeg and re-encoding to upload to Youtube kind of defeats the purpose. - Rodfather
It's all about trade offs one way or another. However the tz5 has similar imaging capabilities to fz28 and it's pocketable. The fz28 does have a usb jack and it isn't that hard to deal with to upload, but you are right about the file formats. - Adrian
IMO, if you want something like the Flip, just get an iPhone, jailbreak it, and use Qik. Streaming straight to a site is as convenient as you can get. If you want quality, get a real camcorder like a Canon HF S100. - Rodfather
I can't have my cake and eat it too? I tend to gravitate towards quality on all levels. - Michael Fidler
Well, if you're set on a digicam, wait for a newer pocketable Panny that record to h.264. There's still the sensor issue, but at least the files are smaller. The Panasonic ZS3 is the successor to the TZ line. They are the same size as the TZ5 but record 720p using the h.264 codec. - Rodfather
What so you think of Mark's idea of going with something like the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ28K ? I just realizes how active this thread has become. I better read it. - Michael Fidler
I've put off a video cam purchase for too long . I can spend up to $500.00. Quality is the most important thing. Convince would be nice, but really is isn't important to me. - Michael Fidler
I'd get a real camcorder then. I've read some good things about the Sanyo FH1. The Canon HF100 were going for $500 in November but has gone up since then. - Rodfather
I was just looking on CNET and prices are all over the place. So are the reviews. Here's their top 5 http://reviews.cnet.com/best-ca... I think it might be possible to get one under $500. I just found it interesting that they include the Flip HD in the list. - Michael Fidler
There's also the Panasonic HDC-SD20 which is their lower-end HD camcorder. http://www.camcorderinfo.com/content... - Rodfather
The Sanyo FH1 is going for $449 at the moment. (http://www.amazon.com/Sanyo-V...). I've read it only has digital image stabilization. Shooting in low-light is supposedly really good. It's also one of the only camcorders that can record 1080p at 60fps. Here's sample footage: http://vimeo.com/4020813 - Rodfather
I have to check all these out. The low-end market is red hot. I was just looking at a new Sony, which does 1080P for $200 bucks. The review was average, but it's clear that competition will force one of these companies to come out with a great sub $200 camera. I don't think it's a good time to buy one right now. I think I’m going to spend more, and buy a camera that will last me a while. - Michael Fidler
I have one other option. I have friends that works at Sony Studios. Usually I can get 40% off anything they make. Is there a descent Sony that's worth looking at? It’s not a sure thing, but I’ve done so many times in the past, I don’t think it will be a problem again, unless they changed the rules. BTW; thanks for helping out! - Michael Fidler
No problem :). Hm. Sony consumer camcorders are usually fairly expensive. Try getting a price for the SR11 & CX12. The Sony TG1 is compact. The successor is the TG5. The easy pick last year was the Canon HF100, but like I said before, the price has gone up. - Rodfather
I know its another story but what about canon mark II ? @mark? - Alemsah Ozturk
I'll take it if I could get one for $1,000 tomorrow! I saw a HV-30 for $599 that looks nice. BTW, the video of the turtle looks great. This is a different segment of the market entirely. Whenever I start looking at these, It makes me want to spend more and not make any compromises. It’s a tough call. My original intentions were to buy one low-end camera, and one high-end model. Now I need to do some research. - Michael Fidler
Do you know why the price went up on the Cannon's, and is it expected to stay that way? - Michael Fidler
There's an HF-100 for $599. I could do that. Is that the best choice? - Michael Fidler
I suspect they went down in price for the holiday season and went back up again. The Canon is a very good bet. Ask Derrick how his HF10 is. The HF100 is exactly the same but the HF10 has internal 16GB memory while the HF100 has no internal memory. You'll just have to grab a SDHC card. - Rodfather
I think it's the one. Thanks for the advice. How much are the memory cards? What size do you recommend? The review I just watched was excellent. They love the camera. If I can find the HF10 at the same price, would it be better to have internal memory? I would rather buy a couple memory cards and just swap them out. - Michael Fidler
Ya definitely grab a HF10 if it's the same price. You get 16GB internal memory plus the SDHC slot. A quick search at newegg, a 16GB card is going for $33. http://www.newegg.com/Product... - Rodfather
Thant's not bad at all. I think this is definitely the way to go. Thank You!!! Now watch, I'll end up with the Flip. Kidding! However, I might get one, some day. lol - Michael Fidler
Haha cool. Don't just take my word for it. I'm sure more people will chime in. :) - Rodfather
I still appreciate you taking the time. I love how it's possible to have an entire conversation here, as if nothing else were going on. I love ff! - Michael Fidler
So I just read the review on the new Canon SX200 IS. Here you have a 12x optical zoom with image stabilization camera that records 720p movies in H.264 unfortunately the optical zoom doesn't work in movie mode. You can read a review and see sample movies here: http://www.dcresource.com/reviews... - Mark Krynsky
@Mark Krynsky Thanks! What a coincidence, . I was reading and watching reviews, also. This is just me dreaming, but check this out, http://bit.ly/2mc5YN It's footage from the Panasonic's Lumix GH1. If money were no object...I'm going to check out the Canon right now. - Michael Fidler
Watch the HD version. I think the link defaults back to the SD one. - Michael Fidler
@krynsky Nice review. I like how the image stabilizer is available during recording. If the Flip had this feature, I wouldn't think twice about buying one. More food for thought! Thanks again! - Michael Fidler
@krynsky I got it! I was at Costco yesterday, and they had all three of the camera’s. I based my final decision on how much money I had with me at the time. The Canon HF-10 was selling for $560.00 and the sx200 was $345.00. The Flip HD with tripod was $300.00. At the time, I had $500.00 with me. I ended up buying the sx200. I only had a chance to play around with it a little today. I’m going to finish loading the software and see how the pictures look. I’ll update soon! - Michael Fidler
Great Michael. Keep us posted on how you like it and what you think of the video mode. It sounds like optical zoom while recording wasn't an issue for you, but unfortunately that's a prob for me. Purchasing at Costco is a good choice as well since they offer a very liberal return policy if you aren't happy. - Mark Krynsky
Mark, My thoughts exactly. Costco has a great rental...I mean return policy:-) I have 90 days to get a better idea of what I really want out of a camera. - Michael Fidler
Does Design Matter in Comparison to Content? - http://www.idratherbewriting.com/2008...
The best design is full-text RSS feeds. I don't give a f&*k what your blog design is cause I read your stuff in Google Reader. - Robert Scoble
it depends, as always. on a blog the content is clearly important. but i have to admit that whenever you are "choosing" what to read ex. in friendfeed, it could be more attractive a note that has an image. its like designing the way the people would look at your info. - hector juarez
I agree that content matters more than design, yet I wouldn't go so far as to say design doesn't matter at all. Not all people use feed readers, so I think design does affect their perception. And, for those that click through the feed readers, design affects their impression of the writer's professionalism, too. - Helen Hoefele
There is no chicken-egg situation here. Without content, design is just a geegaw. You can have content without design, but the idea of design is to make the content accessible in an appealing and useful way. I'm also a full-content RSS fiend, but I appreciate it when images, videos, and code specimens show up nicely in the feed too. When I link to articles, especially ones continued... more... - Dennis E. Hamilton from twhirl
Uh, so I am agreeing with Helen, just took more words. - Dennis E. Hamilton from twhirl
Robert - yes, but you usually read it in Google Reader after you visited it at least once. Content is King, but the design is still the Queen, she is also important and supportive to the King. 80-20 law at work? - Raanan Avidor
The design is not just the colors of the web or blog, even in a feed reader like Google Reader the design acts there, in a very minimal way, but if we reduces this, imagine the feed in a disorder without an align text and non.centered images, that’s blow the mind of the reader and he going to decide just to not to read that post. If the content is not dumb-friendly it just not going to work out of the geekland limits. Disculpen mi ingles. - Borja from twhirl
Design is important. First impressions mean a lot. You can't run around with a default blogspot template or default wordpress theme and think you are going to be a big success. (this is especially important if your blog is hosted on Blogspot.) It's too common and doesn't stand out in the least bit, and everyone has seen it a million times on splogs. If you want to be taken seriously or trusted by the average person, you need to do something that shows you are not just another common splog. - April Russo (app103)
The answer should be obvious to people who anchor their view of design to Charles Eames brilliant definition: "A plan for arranging elements in such a way as to best accomplish a particular purpose." You can only critique a design in relation to its purpose. Design is about meeting objectives. It's not (primarily) about looking pretty. - Michael Markman
People are more influenced by appearance than they think they are. Read Paul Buchheit's "first thing that you need to understand about humans." It was an epiphany for me, as I detail here: http://ourdoings.com/2008-02... - Bruce Lewis
Derrick
Do you believe in love at first sight, true love, or "the one"? Did you have to cultivate your relationship or was it instantaneous?
The hopeless romantic in me says yes.. I fell for Candy the moment she walked into my office at work. :) - Haggis (Sean Loyless)
The night I met my husband, I asked him to marry me 3 times. Was it love at first sight? I don't think so, but I did feel an affinity toward him. I don't know about "the one". I don't think there is any one person for someone else. I believe there is 'the one' person for you at that moment in your life. If I had met my husband 5 years before, I doubt I would have even spoken to him. - Admiral Anika
Not sure, but probably not. What Anika said about Right One at the Right Time. - Cyndy
To be honest, I knew I was meant to marry Jas the second I saw her. Years later she told me she felt the same thing. Crazy, I know. - Shey, Jamaican of FF
That's sweet Sheryl. - David Cook
Awww Sean. And, Derrick, to answer your question, I don't know about love at first sight. But, I do believe there is a person out there for everyone. - Yolanda
I've never experienced what I would think of as "instant love." But I believe that love can grow into something profound. I don't believe in "star-crossed lovers" or "soul mates" or "the one." If you look at the success of many arranged marriages, it's plain that love can be cultivated. - Jen (SquirrelGirl)
Nope. Not at all - Outsanity
Yes. :) - Mona Nomura
I agree with what many have said...to think about a woman in Argentina in a village and her true love working for UPS in Cleveland and their paths never crossing is silly. But the hopeless romantic in me is just feeling extra romanticky. - Derrick
I used to. Not sure what I believe anymore - other than all things wind up being as they are supposed to be. For reasons we'll never know. - Cheryl
it was first sight for us. and we even have a snapshot that was taken the instant we met - Melissa Maskevich
first sight! - Janet
I would love to say yes, but I'm also of the belief that we may have many "ones" because that is how life works sometimes. some people are meant to be with one person forever, and some of us are meant to roam and seek pleasure everywhere we go. :D - DO ANYBODY NO MONIQUE
What ever happened to sex at first sight? :( - Outsanity
There are two great scenes from movies that discuss this. "Four Weddings and Funeral" with the whole thunderbolt or learn to like the look of someone discussion and then in "The Bronx Tale" with the 3 great ones in your life on speech (while Chaz is driving backwards). Should I post the clips? i believe in a combo of true love/the one ... Nowadays, more cultivation is needed IMO. - Amani
Absolutely not. Mating for the purpose of offspring is as the core of our animal instinct...and human as well. Everything starts from there. The concept of 'love at first sight' is merely 'lust at first sight'. Love comes from getting to know someone, once you've gotten past all the animal instincts and carnal lust associated with initial attraction. Why do you think there so much... more... - Fleagle
Lord knows I've suffered from "lust" at first sight. Maybe that's why I'm still single. Sigh. - Derrick
As for me...?? I do not believe in it. Even if there is chemistry from the beginning, I believe you have to work hard not to lose it. Otherwise people lose what they loved to begin with and grow apart after the first year. I definitely don't believe in "The One" either. What I once thought was my "One" turned out to be someone else's "One". Sorry if this sounds really pessimistic. [If it counts for anything I am thinking about spending the rest of my life with Debbie. Just have to save a little money =)] - David Cook
I'm a hopeless romantic so I believe in all three. It wasn't at first sight with me and my wife though. What we have now was cultivated over time even though I "knew" pretty early on that she was the one for me. I "knew" at 3 months, proposed after 9 and we were married at roughly 16 months. So not instant but not too long either. - Give 'Em DBizness
Yeah, I think I lust more than I love. - DO ANYBODY NO MONIQUE
Love at first sight? No. Lust/intense like, a deep attraction to someone yes. I've had that both for platonic and romantic relationships. I've had meetings with people were I feel like I've known them forever and I'm excited about actually getting to know more about them. But a deeper friendship requires time, energy and motivation, on both parts. Love, as much as I believe in it, isn't the end all be all to a relationship. - ♥patricia♥
what pea said. :D - DO ANYBODY NO MONIQUE
No on the one... too many people in the world we will never meet for that, too many people who find a second happiness after their partner passes. We can each love many in various ways, all you've mentioned. The rarity comes when both parties feel the same and bit of it all. And you must cultivate every relationship; family, friends, loves. *edit* and what pea said :P - Michael W. May
Here, here, MWM. While my romantic love life has been elusive, I couldn't make it through life with my very dear friends who put up with my crazy shenanigans. I'll always love them dearly for that. - Derrick
Yes, Yes, and Yes...and how can anyone put "rules" on life? I would NEVER deny a feeling to justify a pre-defined rule....but that's just me. :-) - Live4Emma (L4S)
Yes... living example of it. - Juan Pablo González
i do believe in love at first sight and true love. i do not, however, believe that either of them last forever without a whole lot of work, patience, and occasional bouts of drama. ... wrt my current relationship, it just kind of happened. we clicked from the instant we met. but it took us 3.5 years, some tito's vodka, and a plane ticket to see "us" as an option (opposite coasts and another relationship will do that). - tiffany
Personal experience says yes. The real question is, can true love survive? So far that answer is also yes...but it's not easy. - Joe Silence
yes and no - Marco(aureliusmaximus)
I believe it happens/exists, it just hasn't happened to me. :-( - Kol Tregaskes
I'm not going to rule out love at first sight as a possibility. I just think it must be extremely rare, if it happens. I DO believe lust at first sight is often mistaken for love, and that sometimes it develops into a true bond. - MiniMage TKDteacher of FF
Love at first sight, no. True love is based on your own truth. The one? Maybe several ones spread out over the course of a lifetime. Yeah, I'm a cynic. - cecily
I believe that people believe in love at first sight, true love, and "the one". Our relationship was instantaneous and we have to constantly cultivate it (been doing it for the last 22 years). - Raanan Avidor
