Hi Benjamin, I was wondering if you could talk a little about the technologies used in FF? Language(s), frameworks (for web frontend or backend stuff), that kind of thing?
- Diego Barros
Diego: nearly everything is Python. We use Java for search. No frameworks (all custom built) but our frontend is similar to web.py
- Benjamin Golub
Benjamin: Thanks for the response. I wondered if you'd gone the GWT route with UI for a minute. But there's no GWT Python support, just Java (as far as I know)
- Diego Barros
Download the new Yelp app (came out yesterday). So you shake your iPhone 3 times. That activates a feature called Monocle. A message should come up if you activated it. A blue box will come up saying "the Monocle has been activated." It will create a button in the top right corner. Now you should be able to look at the bars, restaurants, etc. Only works on iPhone 3GS.
- Robert Scoble
You point it at businesses, or down the city block. I'll try it right now.
- Robert Scoble
Yep! Works. Took a few tries to get it to activate. Some of the places it shows me have been closed for ages though, guess I need to update Yelp for the area.
- Otto
That sounds so cool. Would love to see a video demo of it Robert!
- Alex Calic
I wonder why it's an easter egg. That sounds great.
- Daniel Ha
I just did it. Very cool. I hear this feature was added for me. I really love it!
- Robert Scoble

Daniel: probably to get it through the iPhone store approval process faster.
- Robert Scoble
from iPhone
Raises the question of whether they would have rejected it if they'd known about it. Or did Yelp tell the reviewers about it?
- Jan Dawson
Very, very cool! Just tried it out. There's not a lot on Yelp near by work (kind of an industrial area), but I did get it to find the nearest restaurant. So cool! :-)
- Josh Bancroft
Nice idea but in my case the locations seem to be about 180 degrees off - i.e. showing behind me instead of in front - but may be down to a fuzzy GPS location or something - will have to keep trying
- Jan Dawson
I wonder why it was "secret", ... undocumented API usage or just to create marketing buzz ?
- Kooleido
I hate that the iPhone 3G can handle all this new stuff, but Apple insists that you need the 3Gs. Qik on the jailbroken 3G has been awesome!
- Elijah Nicolas
@Elijah Nicolas The 3Gs is for the built in compass that is required for augmented reality to work.
- JP Holecka - Jaypiddy
lol if it was added for you Robert it would show the cutest girls in the area instead
- Sherry Reynolds
Didn't I hear that Apple had an embargo on AR apps til next month?
- Brian O'Connell
Very cool, thanks for the info. It appears you have to be logged into Yelp though the app before the monocle option will appear.
- Patrick Looney
1st sentence typo in your post Marshall ;o)
- Alex Calic
Couldn't get it to work by "shaking it" but I got it to work by moving my iPhone up and down 3 times in a vertical motion. Pretty damn cool.
- Doug Rice
Marshall, how do you get that camera view? I can't seem to get mine to work. I've shaken and shaken
- Stephen Pickering
Stephen, you should probably just keep shaking. In publish, with lots of people around. :) No, I don't know. I don't have a 3Gs so I don't have a compass so I don't have the Yelp AR.
- Marshall Kirkpatrick
Unreal... landscape and portrait works.
- Drew Lucas
Yeah this is very cool. Don't know if I want to be the guy standing in the middle of the street downtown using it, but I can see some very practical applications.
- Trevor Childs
I got it to work and man, is it sweet! So smart.
- Leslie Fishlock
Shake the darn thing 3 times :)- they say that break dancin was learnt , robbing hubcaps of a movin car in NYC.. so lets so what the new thing will be by the time th iphone has all the motion sickness activiated apps !!
- Peter Dawson
I already had 2.0.2, but I'm downloading 3.0 now. I'm not thinking it's going to work in my office, but we'll see.
- RobinDotNet
Ok, that's really cool. It even works sitting here in my office at home.
- RobinDotNet
Downloading now. I am absolutely fascinated by the idea of augmented reality!
- Victoria Harres Akers
This is pretty cool but the shake 3 times thing doesn't work too well
- Jason Wehmhoener
from iPhone
This is fantastic, just activated Monocle. For those having trouble, its best to move/raise and lower the iPhone 3 times vertically instead of just shaking it. I was shaking mine like a madman until I tried the vertical move.
- Bryan
very cool - I can't believe stuff actually shows up near my house on the bay - sweet :)
- Susan Beebe
Damn, guess I'll have to upgrade to the 3GS now.
- Damon Cortesi
I am using the app in Indianapolis to find a restauant. As I guessed the augmented reality is cool but not very useful. Other than to help figure out which direction to walk in.

shake your iPhone 6 times, that activates GoogleVoice
- HansVanRock
I just got this going on my friend's 3Gs. I don't even know what to say. That is freaking incredible! Makes me want a 3Gs *just* for that feature!
- Michael Lynton
Just tried this. Awesome! Too bad I'm in a po' dunk town with nothing to do. :)
- Bryan Lee
Amazing, how on earth did you find it! It's still 6:00 am, perhaps I'll Yelp for breakfast
- Nalin Perera
Wow, I'll have to say this is phenomenal. Wish I'd had this on my trip to D.C. a couple weeks ago. Yelp just made an incredibly useful app even more useful. I've seen a lot of developers working on this technology lately but it looks like they beat everyone to the punch.
- Mike Elliott
very cool....it took me a few times to get the blue box, but then it worked. thanks
- Pam Negoro
I just got the yelp AR to work, and I am staying tonight in a hotel, so I went to my window, and held the camera to the window and it was able to show me reviews of the businesses right across the street from me! I am in love with yelp all over again!

suggestion - after you shave it, grow it again based on the amount of money you raise. something like 1 day per $5 raised. so if you raise $100, then you let it grow 20 days before shaving again.

This is why I hate the app store so much. Cool app, massive delay in getting it to market. Why do I have to download this crap through Apple? Why can't I download through FB directly? Frankly, all developers of "free" apps should release through Cydia, so those of us with jailbroken phones don't have to put up with Apple's BS.
- Otto
I hope Spotify release their app on Cydia if Apple rejects it. What a great reason for millions of people to jailbreak their phones. :)

a wavelet provides access control. It provides a branch where participants can be different from another branch.
- Ahsan Ali aka. Slick
a wave, itself, can also have participants: which implies they can see/control all the wavelets
- Ahsan Ali aka. Slick
I've written a bot that creates a post on FF for every blip... but it's not feasible. The alternative is to create a comment for every blip .. and thereby lose all formatting/photos.
- Ahsan Ali aka. Slick
Hmm, I should flesh out the FF side of it. An FF Post can have participants. A Comment has an author.
- Ahsan Ali aka. Slick
From the Wave docs: "Waves are hosted live conversations between multiple participants". Excellent definition.

I think anyone working in tech - not just programmers - can get access to the sandbox. You just have to pitch them a good reason :)
- Ahsan Ali aka. Slick
You forgot that on Friendfeed, a post also has addressees. Addressing specific people on FriendFeed also allows for access control, since the post/thread/conversation will be private. If you post something to a private group (and not your home feed), the whole group will have access (and not the public).
- Meryn Stol
It's a pity FF doesn't allow me to edit/reattach inline images ;)
- Ahsan Ali aka. Slick
Sounds too complicated to start a new technology off with. They need to start more simple.
- Jesse Stay
Jesse, the map is from a technical perspective .. visually, you'd just see a threaded conversation with (optionally) private sections. It is interesting, however, how much FF has achieved with a relatively simple model. Maybe their success is _because_ it was simple ?
- Ahsan Ali aka. Slick
Yeah, the friendfeed side of this mindmap is very simplified right now. I really think Google Wave will run into some mainstream challenges for what I've read so far (don't have wave account yet). However, aren't you really just displaying the threaded feature of a Wavelet? That would just be the ability to comment to a comment in FriendFeed.
- manielse (Mark Nielsen)
manielse, yes. The major difference between the two is threading.. except in Wave, a comment is equal to a post itself (with photos, rich text, etc, multiple participants). Hence the recursive nature of the tree. A comment (blip) can have a reply, which can have a reply in turn.. and so on)
- Ahsan Ali aka. Slick
But these are features that some of the FF users have wanted, to reply back to a comment and also with a richer content such as a diagram that explains the topic better.
- manielse (Mark Nielsen)
Ahsan, I know how it looks visually - I'm on the dev sandbox. I still say it's too complicated for an initial launch. They need to start simple, the Google way.
- Jesse Stay
Google Wave is all about potential. In a sense, it's like handing someone a copy of Visual Studio or Eclipse and saying, 'Okay, now go build what you want!' The majority of people will say, 'Uh... what?'
- Akiva Moskovitz
Akiva, agreed. That's why they haven't released it to the public yet.
- Jesse Stay
Interesting comment, Joelle. I wonder if Microsoft will branch off from the Wave server protocol at some point, like they did with XML, and do their own thing. :) Interesting times, ahead.
- Ahsan Ali aka. Slick
Ahsan -- what a great post! Pure gold. (And I happen to think that Google Wave is the wave (oops) of the future. But I need to get hands on with it for a few days to be sure.
- Sean McBride
Glad you liked it, Sean. Be sure to view the updated version (see the link I've edited into the original post).
- Ahsan Ali aka. Slick
I didnt have a precise enough project to make it into the closed access, apart from having written time and time again that what we should have and want was an open standard, distributed system matching nearly word for word the wave press release... (although the reality will probably be different). AM more interested in what can be done on a node basis than writing bots.
- Joelle Nebbe (iphigenie)
A key question in my mind: will Google Wave feel more cluttered than Friendfeed? The beauty of Friendfeed is the simplicity of the look and feel. Will more power features reduce the impression of simplicity and clarity?
- Sean McBride
You really can't compare FriendFeed and GoogleWave, they're both completely different things. Google Wave is a set of technologies that I feel will contribute heavily to the next generation of social networking tools, however it will not replace them. http://jaredquinn.info/article...
- Jared Quinn
To answer Sean's question, the interface itself looks pretty, but inside the wave it can be difficult to manage: I don't like some of the keyboard shortcuts; the threading in a live chat becomes confusing. While the windowing is slick, you feel like you need more space (at least on my monitor). They need to work on the UI (see Jesse's points above).
- Ahsan Ali aka. Slick
It's nearly certain that people and companies will come up with different client "front end" apps which are slicker to use, focused on using wave for a specific purpose - live chat/discussion, document management, information sharing, location enabled services, archive access, tech support, games...
- Joelle Nebbe (iphigenie)
"the threading in a live chat becomes confusing" (I wondered about that from the first moment I saw a Google Wave demo -- it looked busy and noisy...)
- Sean McBride
We strip the threading out then, sean..... non threaded real time conversations work perfectly well here on FF.
- Roberto Bonini
Roberto -- I need to actually use Google Wave in threadless mode to compare it to Friendfeed. Can't wait....
- Sean McBride
How about an app that implements the FriendFeed API and nothing more. Simple, manageable, achievable, boring (meaning it might get done). Open projects for things with user interfaces end up in religious battles within nanoseconds, imho.
Unfortunately without a better way to filter the types of content being displayed, the content display would be rather uninteresting, I'd think (or overwhelming). Might be a good place to start, however.
- Chris Messina
I think it's the right way to go. Plus it would incentivize lots of experimentation on UI. Further, I would be more comfortable building on the realtime API (which is very nice btw) if it were open source, more so than when the future of FF was uncertain.
- Dave Winer
Now comes the obvious question -- Paul -- would you guys be willing to release your implementation of the API under an Open Source license? That would get things going really fast. Not sure if it makes sense, perhaps the implementation isn't easily separatable.
- Dave Winer
We're looking into open sourcing some parts, but I don't think it's possible to open just the api because it's too integrated with everything else at the moment. Maybe after some refactoring it would work -- I'm not sure.
- Paul Buchheit
How dependent is that on server infrastructure?
- Amit Morson
Somewhat missing the point of why its being talked about in the first place.
- Michael W. May
@Paul, I'm excited to hear some things may be open sourced. What license would do you think you guys are likely to use? GPL/LGPL? BSD? Apache?
- Jason Huebel
Jason- I'd assume Apache, just because that's what they used with V1 of the API
- Jimminy
The potential of this is very exciting! :)
- Susan Beebe
from iPhone
Once a core API is in place it would be easy enough to have multiple UI projects. Without the API there is nothing.
- Eoghann Irving
A client API is a great start, but what we really need is an open source server that emulates the backend of Friend Feed. Then...we can do whatever we want to expand the protocol.
- Gary Burge
But there could be multiple back-end implementations. You could have everything from a new, stand-alone Python engine to some sort of weird Ruby system that tries to use Twitter as a datastore to some PHP glue added to Drupal or Wordpress. For a distributed, federated system to truly thrive, IMHO, the group needs to concentrate on how the parts interact, and then teams can break off and build components.
- Ken Sheppardson
BTW, I agree with your original thought, Dave. It's hard enough for groups to agree on a common data bus system/format (ala RSS vs Atom), let alone on some collective vision of a GUI.
- Ken Sheppardson
In fact, if there were a sort of "stack" of components for implementing FriendFeed-like systems in muliple languages, it might encourage other teams to build compatible systems. You have any sort of architecture diagram you could share, Paul? :-) How bout you and Bret and Benjamin just quit your day jobs and come help out ;-)
- Ken Sheppardson
Wave federated protocol.... people can write thier own servers, or even use other WFP clients.....
- Roberto Bonini
Now you're thinking like good programmers! Modular programs that interact, independent of underlying language or OS. This stack idea is worth developing, I think.
- Kevin L
Roberto, Wave is only a method for communicating changes to objects in real time. It doesn't relieve us from having to define data structures and how they relate to each other.
- Kevin L
Kevin: My point is that as long as clients and server agree on the saame protocol, the underlying implementation does not matter. This means that A) Anyone can write thier own server in what ever language they so please using whatever data store they want B) People can write what ever Ui they so please including web and desktop based clients and C) it means that we can interact with other Waves, seeing chages to those waves IN REAL TIME as part of our FF stream.
- Roberto Bonini
Sure, building a federated social network on top of Wave is a pretty slick project, and Google's going to be pushing that effort, I would think. The only problem is there are currently no public projects that support Wave, let alone FriendFeed. Trying to "clone" FriendFeed starting with a Wave engine confuses me.
- Ken Sheppardson
Wave isn't ready yet but the tools are there: threaded conversations, multiple participants, real-time, public waves (though I don't know if they will retain that for the final version), bots to integrate with servers. So all your conversations would be centralized in Wave, but you would go to a site like ff for 'discovery'.
- Ahsan Ali aka. Slick
I agree. The API is the place to start. I also like the stacks idea. If we are trying for a federated, distributed system, going as modular as possible with as much encapsulation as possible is the best route because it will give users the most possible control of their own installs. I don't know about Wave as the way to go, but I can't back that opinion up as much as I would like as I haven't worked with it too much yet; it just seems half-finished and up in the air.
- Neal Jansons
@jcunwired: I played with a Pre. It's nice. iPhone will kick it's ass. Frankly, so will the new BB's which is what Palm seems to be targeting.

When did you place your 3G S order? I put mine in to Apple on June 10th, and it's not showing as shipped yet; trying to judge how fast they're processing...
- Paul Skudlarek
Mine was scheduled to arrive on Wednesday. Checked again this morning and it changed to Thursday.. Let's see if it changes again to Friday.

iPhone will undoubtedly kick its ass, at some point in the future. The delta is too small between Pre and 3G S to warrant an ass-whooping.

Uh, not sure displaying your tracking number is a good idea. That's about all it takes when requesting a package redirection - and that's pretty tempting!

I'm scheduled for delivery on the 18th... order placed June 8th. God... sounds like a baby... Cheers

I'm really not understanding the i-phone thing. Frankly, I think the phone sucks. I hate the keyboard touch, I can't imagine a woman in this country with a decent manicure wanting to deal with that crappy screen! I have service at home with Verizon in the countryside where we live, my husband's crappy I-Phone drops out about ten miles from the house and not only that, the piece of crap is constantly dropping phone calls. Is the bay area better?

It's probably best for Company X to have pre-established guidelines on how to respond to requests from any government. Under what circumstances will the business cooperate with the request? Under what circumstances will the business refuse to cooperate, for the good of the business? (Note that I differentiate between "requests" and "legal orders.")
