Regarding FB/FF - Here's how it's [probably] going to work. You will most likely have an account merge, all of the services FriendFeed supports will now be aggregated on Facebook, and all of your FriendFeed friends will be in a "list" on Facebook. The FF Groups will become Facebook Groups. The FF lists will become Facebook Lists.
the only thing that might get lost in the shuffle would be the Saved Searches - those don't have an equivalence on Facebook, and may be hard to port over... - Nathan Chase
that's my guess anyhow. - Nathan Chase
still the issue at hand is the past data... if they could figure out how to port over all the previous conversations and comments to Facebook - that would be a monumental achievement - Nathan Chase
I'm feeling a little nautious just thinking about it. - Daniel Sims
I dont't want this. Don't like facebook. Don't want to be there. I think Friendfeed is over for me:( - Ozgur Uckan
Yup. - Roberto Bonini from iPhone
It did not happen. - Ahmet Yükseltürk
Kinda wish it did. - Nathan Chase
Not me. While I wish FF had regular maintenance, I'd much rather be neglected than get the constant UI/privacy issues that FB has. - Spidra Webster
Seconding Spidra. - Absentee
What Spidra said. - John (bird whisperer)
Agreed. - Andy Bakun
For better or worse, FF walks its own path. - Micah
Andy Bakun
Favorite sci-fi space ship names...
Heart of Gold from HHGTTG is a good name, but I always pictured it shaped like a running shoe, rather than a sphere. - Andy Bakun
Just about every name in Iain M. Bank's Culture Novels. I'll BRB with some samples. - Anika
Millennium Falcon, obviously. It's such a sports-car sounding name. - Rob H.
I'm browsing Larry Niven and Known Space on wikipedia right now, and there are some really good ones there. The Long Shot and The Lying Bastard. - Andy Bakun
Here's some for inspiration: http://conservationreport.file... Although admittedly, these aren't very individually interesting. Lexx is a pretty good name. - Andy Bakun
The Halo series has some good ones as well; UNSC Pillar of Autumn, UNSC In Amber Clad, Truth and Reconciliation, Shadow of Intent and so on. - Rob H.
Damn, those are good. Truth and Reconciliation reminds me of the weapon named Reason in Snow Crash ("I'm sure they'll listen to Reason"). - Andy Bakun
Okay, here's a few ship names: Size Isn't Everything, Hand Me That Gun And Ask Me Again, Youthful Indiscretion, No More Mr. Nice Guy, Just Read The Instructions, Problem Child, I Blame My Mother, I Blame Your Mother...there's a lot more. - Anika
You almost can't go wrong. Serenity, Star Destroyer, USS Enterprise, Starship Bistromath... - Vezquex
Ah, the Bistromath. Damn, I should have thought of that one. - Andy Bakun
i always wanted to see the Bistromath realised on screen. probly never happen, now. - Big Joe Silence
Is the Hand Me that Gun And Ask Me Again referred to as just The Hand Me or The Ask Me Again? - Andy Bakun
Those Banks names are pretty funny. Is there some reason they're like that (those aren't humor books, right)? - Rob H.
I always liked the way The Defiant implied serious kickassitude. - Andy Bakun
I always loved the Star Destroyer names on the XWing games - WoH: Professor MOTHRA
I don't know. I think the Culture novels are pretty funny. There's an underlying satirical look at wealth's role in society. The droid/human relationship is humorous, as the droids seem to be the Voice of Conscious/Mom. And considering the heavy violence, in which most of the ships are introduced to you, it's nice to have a moment of levity. - Anika
Also keep in mind that some of the ships are sentient beings and play heavy roles in the stories. - Anika
I liked "Nostalgia for Infinity" from Revelation Space (Alastair Reynolds). In the epilogue for Galactic North, he admits that his ship names have been inspired by the culture novels and other sources. - Matt M (inactive)
Ah, yes...Reynolds did have some great ship names. I totally assumed he was inspired by Banks. We named our daughter after a character in Revelation Space. - Anika
Anika, that's awesome. :) Just pulled the book to confirm: he actually said that "he bows to noone in his admiration of Ian M Banks", but "his ship names were a direct pinch from M. John Harrison's The Centauri Device, not the Culture". - Matt M (inactive)
Nice. I've never read any of John Harrison's work. If I had read that in the book, I would have searched it out. I have a bad habit of not reading the author blurbs. - Anika
I couldn't stop reading after that book ended, so I plowed right through the epilogue hoping to hear that he's planning on continuing the series, picking up some interesting tidbits. It's hard to reach the end of a deep series like that. - Matt M (inactive)
Good list, WorldofHiglet. Accuser, Thunderflare, Inflexible and Death's Head. - Andy Bakun
That ship-size comparison reminded me of another I really liked: Agamemnon from Babylon 5. Greek heros make good ship names. - Matt M (inactive)
Nostromo. - andrei_c
Reynold's Revelation Space naming convention used by the Ultras, transhuman spacefarers: Nostalgia For Infinity , Gnostic Ascension - Ken Chen
Matt, those books are good. I'm currently re-reading Ilium, soon to be followed by Olympos, but It think after I'm done with Simmons I'll revisit the Revelation Space world. - Anika
Ilium and Olympos were such a good read (read them recently after a re-read of the Hyperion Cantos). Loved the Mahnmut and Orphu storyline. I'm just about to start my first read-through of Culture tonight. - Matt M (inactive)
Serenity and Millenium Falcon are my favorites. Of course, I don't watch a lot of sci-fi with space ships (I watch more of the supernatural sci-fi). - COMPLICATED MR. NOODLE
Anika++ Ian Banks. My favorite was "Very Little Gravitas Indeed" - mikepk
or maybe "Xenophobe" - mikepk
I really like the Culture names here. Maybe I should read the series. The Halo names are great too. - Andrew C (✔)
It's a really fun series to read, Andrew. - Anika
Highly recommend Banks. My recommendation is usually to start with "Consider Phlebas", I think it's his first culture book and in my opinion, it's the most 'space operatic' of them. I think it's a good intro to the Culture. - mikepk
Anika, have you ever read Bank's non sci-fi stuff? - mikepk
Just picked up Consider Phlebas, after running into the ship names list for The Culture on wikipedia. Sounds really interesting. - Andy Bakun
It is a very good book. My husband seems to like Player of Games better. - Anika
Oops! Just read through this thread again and noticed Mike asked me something. No, I haven't read any of Banks non sci-fi stuff. I've been meaning too. - Anika
Does the Nebuchadnezzar from the Matrix count? - Roberto Bonini
Any of the Culture ships in 'Looking to Windward' - Toby Graham
This thread inspired me to start reading the Culture novels a few months ago. I have to admit that they are by far the best ship names. - Matt M (inactive)
I still have not finished Consider Phlebas, but I did start it... barely. - Andy Bakun

2000 or 110% of your following, whichever is greater. At least that is what it used to be when they added the cap. - NOT THE CRICKET
I have 1,100 followers, so I'm unsure about the percentage cap. It shouldn't cut me off at 2,001. - Eric - Let Me Know from iPhone

Hehe, Roberto, I wish it worked like that. Unfortunately the Trust/government have said they need to cut costs, so not really their fault. It's a real shame but some of the cost-cutting makes sense. I made a small journey through FF-sphere. Just to see what other people did theme-wise. Whether they had wanted to be original or liked it more the way it was. not pictured is a Verizon iPad sleeve with a pocket for the MIFI 2200 - Mike Nencetti
This is how green I am to Apple. I did not know there was 64bit Itunes. downloading it now. Also did not know you *have* to connect an iPad to a computer with Itunes to use it. 80 meg download. wow. - Mike Nencetti
First connect to Itunes, and I am asked to upgrade the iPad from 3.2.2 to version 4.2. I say yes. The download appears to take 1 hour. another wow. - Mike Nencetti
success. now to activate the MIFI. (edit MIFI up and running, I like how they put the install in the device) ready to start testing. - Mike Nencetti
I don't think my wife has connected her iPad to her computer since she first set it up weeks ago. - Bruce Lewis
the MIFI is easy to setup. To change the default settings you need to go to and log in with a default password of admin, however the directions make you go to a Novatel wireless page, and look for the PDF, scroll to page 26 to find this simple fact out. - Mike Nencetti
Testing on a bumpy commute home. Connects fast. Not sure where to put the mifi device...tonights testing will be printing to wifi and pc connected printers. - Mike Nencetti
Apparently my HP Photosmart Plus 209b is not compatible... 210b is. May buy a 4$ printing app, as the list of air printers is rather small. - Mike Nencetti
Yeah, we're using a linux box as a print server. With it works well. - Bruce Lewis
installed airprint on my windows 7 PC. Took a while to find links were not working.... I found it on 4shared. I had to manually add airprint.exe to the firewall, was not prompted. when I connected to each printer on the ipad, I had to sign in with my local userid and pw for the home computer. it works! - Mike Nencetti
As a test, I printed the instructions off of the web page. Then I realized it is 85 pages, 500 meg. the local computer can cancel the printout, fortunately. - Mike Nencetti
Thanks for that link mike. Will get AirPrint running ASAP. - Roberto Bonini
Printing to a laptop on a Domain, running Win 7 64. I was able to print, by authenticating to the laptops local admin account, with the laptop's wifi off of the corporate network. it was not letting me authenticate to my domain account. I prefer it connecting to the local account. - Mike Nencetti
I don't get the archiving Gmail to the All Mail folder, instead of deleting. That threw me off. fortunately you can set it to delete. The default is archive. - Mike Nencetti
Signed up for my first NetFlix account. I played a documentary about parking lots. the movie froze up 15 min in, then was grainy. I accidentally exited the app, apparently this ends the movie, and signs me out of Netflix. Netflix has no record of me watching the movie. I will experiment with this more, but it is not easy with very few good movies to watch. - Mike Nencetti
We had a similar experience with our first attempt at Netflix streaming a couple months ago. It's been a lot better since then. Just bad luck I guess. We really like it now. - DB, Lil LB's Dad
Purchased first iPad app WinAdmin, to use with VPN. This is a Windows remote desktop protocol (RDP) client. definitely worth 9$. (works fine over the MIFI) This is something that the Android platform cannot do. Cisco IPSEC Group Authentication. Maybe someday they will add it.... it's not on 2.2 - Mike Nencetti
Tested Print Bureau. This prints directly to my wifi HP Photosmart Plus 209b. There are more features like file sharing that I have not tested, as I use Dropbox. Recommend this for people with WIFI printers that are not Airprint compatible. - Mike Nencetti
Watched Star Trek on Netflix. no pauses, no grainy video. Maybe Netflix isn't that bad. - Mike Nencetti
Testing Winadmin and VPN at home. Rotating the IPad 90 degrees disconnected me from my remote session, but not vpn. I just had to re log on to the remote computer. need to disable rotation or look into the Winadmin options. - Mike Nencetti from Android
Done most of my iPad testing. Weprint and the service airprint both seem to cause freezeups on the computers I loaded them on. Windows Defender thinks Weprint could be malware, most likely due to its file share feature. Another interesting point I need to document. I bought 2 apps using my cc, and the transactions have not shown up..... - Mike Nencetti from Android
Mike, try OurDoings on the iPad now. It's better on every platform (other than FF3 or IE7), but especially improved on the iPad. You can swipe to switch pictures. The photos fill the screen. Controls disappear after a few seconds, and reappear on a tap. - Bruce Lewis
Great thanks! Will do - Mike Nencetti
