Finally watching this. This isn't the speech of a future presidential candidate, this is the speech of someone on the verge of a breakdown. It's all over the place, but I don't think politics got to her. I'm guessing something happened internally.

A sign of stress I would imagine. This isn't the calm earned from a hard decision made for the better. She didn't want to do this.
- Todd Hoff
Todd, yes, something like that. Combined with the wording... part of me thinks she could better tell the truth and the whole truth, no matter *what* the repercussions. This is not what I call "graceful"...
- Meryn Stol
no, she didn't want to do this.. but she' s also seen the extremely negative attention that has been brought down on AK and so this is a selfless act.. not a "cover up". She mentioned the photoshopping of a photo of Trig, her son with Down's syndrome by an AK DNC blogger. That is most likely the straw that made her say, "enough of this crap.. it isn't worth it"
- Craig
Craig she gives it out pretty good. As she did in this speech. It's a little hard to believe she can't take it as well. I'm not sure where a "cover up" fits in.
- Todd Hoff
Todd, there are people saying she's resigning as a cover up to keep some deep dark secret from coming to light. Sources close to Palin told MSNBC that she's "out of politics for good". You can all celebrate now, threat neutralized.
- Craig
I'll celebrate when people stop thinking ignorance is a praise-worthy worldview.
- Andrew C
It's not clear how that would keep anything out of the news. Once revealed it would still be news. If anything the democrats would love to have her run, don't you think? The "you can all celebrate now" is weak.
- Todd Hoff
Much worse has been done to others. And she has said "Absolutely not. I think that, if I were to give up and wave a white flag of surrender against some of the political shots that we've taken, that ... that would ... bring this whole ... I'm not doing this for naught."
- Todd Hoff
OK, my bad. Apparently the SA Photoshop thread was in response to Palin's response to the blogger's Photoshop.
- Robert Haas
Yeah, what Todd said. National TV pundits like Limbaugh quite famously attacked Chelsea Clinton. The right thing for those politicians to do, then and now, is defend their kids, but not just step down.
- Andrew C
Did they also hack into family e-mail accounts and post everything they found on the Internet (again, the son of a Democratic lawmaker)? It's okay, though, because she's Sarah Palin and people don't like her.
- Craig
I can see there's no discussion here Craig. But it would be interesting to know what happened. I hope nothing horrible is going on.
- Todd Hoff
I agree that worse has been done and of course it's possible there's more to it. The default conclusion, though, that she's done something wrong. It's just on par with the other attacks that have been aimed at her since she came onto the national scene. She was a threat that had to be neutralized at any cost.
- Craig
That's the default conclusion because what politician resigns out of selflessness?
- Robert Haas
Crazy, I know..especially when you have people like Sanford running around. Doesn't mean it's not true, though. Lt. Gov's response to the resignation - http://www.ltgov.state.ak.us/news...
- Craig
She's got a very young special-needs kid and a young grandchild. If she's actually doing this for family's sake, I can respect that.
- Robert Haas
See, but if she's doing it *NOW* because she's got a very young special-needs kid and a young grandchild... all of these cards were on the table when she was running with McCain. If she can't be governor now for that reason, what the heck was she doing running for VP? Gotta be something more going on.

[eats amphetamines] [washes down with can of Red Bull] Of all the things with which people can take issue, i don't see why people are finding anything wrong with this speech which is reminding me of the great words of previous Palin speeches which always have been at their very heart pro-America and full of fondness for that country which we call America and Alaska specifically of which...

"What you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul." - http://www.viddler.com/explore...
Warren Ellis » Instrumentation -"Perhaps iPhone 3GS users need a bumper sticker for the backs of their instruments that reads IT’S OKAY: I’M DOING SCIENCE." - http://www.warrenellis.com/...
"I discovered today that, through the very good technology house Expansys, an unlocked iPhone 3GS costs pretty much a thousand pounds per unit. Which is a bit strong for something that only learned how to do MMS five minutes ago. But. A thousand pounds per unit actually forces you to recontextualise the iPhone a bit. That’s not a mainstream consumer street device anymore. That’s a digital instrument. That is something very different from a mobile phone. That’s something you don’t dare carry around in your pocket because it costs a thousand pounds. And if you do carry such a thing around in your pocket, you are either a wilfully conspicuous consumer of a piece with the people who used to lug mobile phones around when they came in briefcases or you are some kind of scientist performing science on the street with a digital instrument or else why would you be carrying around a device that costs a thousand pounds per unit? Perhaps iPhone 3GS users need a bumper sticker for the backs of their instruments that reads IT’S OKAY: I’M DOING SCIENCE."
