Just about every name in Iain M. Bank's Culture Novels. I'll BRB with some samples.
- Anika
Millennium Falcon, obviously. It's such a sports-car sounding name.
- Rob H.
I'm browsing Larry Niven and Known Space on wikipedia right now, and there are some really good ones there. The Long Shot and The Lying Bastard.
- Andy Bakun
The Halo series has some good ones as well; UNSC Pillar of Autumn, UNSC In Amber Clad, Truth and Reconciliation, Shadow of Intent and so on.
- Rob H.
Damn, those are good. Truth and Reconciliation reminds me of the weapon named Reason in Snow Crash ("I'm sure they'll listen to Reason").
- Andy Bakun
Okay, here's a few ship names: Size Isn't Everything, Hand Me That Gun And Ask Me Again, Youthful Indiscretion, No More Mr. Nice Guy, Just Read The Instructions, Problem Child, I Blame My Mother, I Blame Your Mother...there's a lot more.
- Anika
You almost can't go wrong. Serenity, Star Destroyer, USS Enterprise, Starship Bistromath...
- Vezquex
Ah, the Bistromath. Damn, I should have thought of that one.
- Andy Bakun
i always wanted to see the Bistromath realised on screen. probly never happen, now.
- Joe Silence
Is the Hand Me that Gun And Ask Me Again referred to as just The Hand Me or The Ask Me Again?
- Andy Bakun
Those Banks names are pretty funny. Is there some reason they're like that (those aren't humor books, right)?
- Rob H.
I always liked the way The Defiant implied serious kickassitude.
- Andy Bakun
I don't know. I think the Culture novels are pretty funny. There's an underlying satirical look at wealth's role in society. The droid/human relationship is humorous, as the droids seem to be the Voice of Conscious/Mom. And considering the heavy violence, in which most of the ships are introduced to you, it's nice to have a moment of levity.
- Anika
Also keep in mind that some of the ships are sentient beings and play heavy roles in the stories.
- Anika
I liked "Nostalgia for Infinity" from Revelation Space (Alastair Reynolds). In the epilogue for Galactic North, he admits that his ship names have been inspired by the culture novels and other sources.
- Matt M (inactive)
Ah, yes...Reynolds did have some great ship names. I totally assumed he was inspired by Banks. We named our daughter after a character in Revelation Space.
- Anika
Anika, that's awesome. :) Just pulled the book to confirm: he actually said that "he bows to noone in his admiration of Ian M Banks", but "his ship names were a direct pinch from M. John Harrison's The Centauri Device, not the Culture".
- Matt M (inactive)
Nice. I've never read any of John Harrison's work. If I had read that in the book, I would have searched it out. I have a bad habit of not reading the author blurbs.
- Anika
I couldn't stop reading after that book ended, so I plowed right through the epilogue hoping to hear that he's planning on continuing the series, picking up some interesting tidbits. It's hard to reach the end of a deep series like that.
- Matt M (inactive)
Good list, WorldofHiglet. Accuser, Thunderflare, Inflexible and Death's Head.
- Andy Bakun
That ship-size comparison reminded me of another I really liked: Agamemnon from Babylon 5. Greek heros make good ship names.
- Matt M (inactive)
Reynold's Revelation Space naming convention used by the Ultras, transhuman spacefarers: Nostalgia For Infinity , Gnostic Ascension
- Ken Chen
Matt, those books are good. I'm currently re-reading Ilium, soon to be followed by Olympos, but It think after I'm done with Simmons I'll revisit the Revelation Space world.
- Anika
Ilium and Olympos were such a good read (read them recently after a re-read of the Hyperion Cantos). Loved the Mahnmut and Orphu storyline. I'm just about to start my first read-through of Culture tonight.
- Matt M (inactive)
Serenity and Millenium Falcon are my favorites. Of course, I don't watch a lot of sci-fi with space ships (I watch more of the supernatural sci-fi).
- DAMMIT, MR. NOODLE
Anika++ Ian Banks. My favorite was "Very Little Gravitas Indeed"
- mikepk
Highly recommend Banks. My recommendation is usually to start with "Consider Phlebas", I think it's his first culture book and in my opinion, it's the most 'space operatic' of them. I think it's a good intro to the Culture.
- mikepk
Anika, have you ever read Bank's non sci-fi stuff?
- mikepk
Just picked up Consider Phlebas, after running into the ship names list for The Culture on wikipedia. Sounds really interesting.
- Andy Bakun
It is a very good book. My husband seems to like Player of Games better.
- Anika
Oops! Just read through this thread again and noticed Mike asked me something. No, I haven't read any of Banks non sci-fi stuff. I've been meaning too.
- Anika
Does the Nebuchadnezzar from the Matrix count?
- Roberto Bonini
Any of the Culture ships in 'Looking to Windward'
- Toby Graham
This thread inspired me to start reading the Culture novels a few months ago. I have to admit that they are by far the best ship names.
- Matt M (inactive)
I still have not finished Consider Phlebas, but I did start it... barely.
- Andy Bakun
The Normandy from mass effect is pretty awesome.
- Guschu

It doesn't take many nukes to wipe out an ocean going navy...or an entire navy period. No navy, no ability to invade the US from China. That said, the nuclear option is still a bad idea. The Russians would likely see a nuclear attack on China as an attack against them as well, since the fallout would likely reach them...MAD is a crazy doctrine, but when instituted by relatively rational people, it works.
- Scoble, Alex Scoble
That's my point. Even if we nuked the first wave, they'd still have a second and third wave.
- Victor Ganata

And those waves would be...swimming to attack America? I know this is an absurd hypothetical to begin with but the US's naval strength is about 10 times that of China. You have a ton of people who are basically landlocked if it came down to it.

True, outright military conquest isn't really an option for anybody these days. Economic hegemony is the more efficient way to go (as we've proved quite disastrously in the negative this past decade by embarking on costly imperialist adventures.) There's a definite co-dependency in the relationship, which I suspect over time will grow increasingly asymmetric
- Victor Ganata

I'm only annoyed at the amount of the increase. Another $2 - 4, sure...but this one is ridiculous. What was, in '07 a $7.99 account is going to be $17.98. Features on the site, depending on which hardware I use, has been scaled back drastically. Not to mention that streaming has gotten incredibly worse over the past 3 years. If they're putting that money into make streaming better, then they should probably share that info.
- Anika
I don't blame them for the streaming issues if that whole 20% of the Internet traffic stat is right. I do hope they're using this money to get some more content deals in place for streaming.
- Rob H.
from FFHound!
I've heard people complaining about content, but I don't get *that*, so it's a clearly a YMMV sort of thing. My problem with their content is that that there's too much good stuff + a shitty, shitty searching UI (since they stripped the good UI a few years back) and it makes it hard to make a decision.
- Anika
How can you not blame them for the streaming issues, regardless of usage? If they are pushing a service, they better damn well be able to support it, or cap usage/stop selling it.
- Scoble, Alex Scoble
I think this price raise is part of supporting it by unofficially capping it. If enough people actually cancel their service, Netflix can better serve those who remain while still keeping similar profit margins. It also helps keep content deals in place since many of them are based upon set numbers of viewers that have been exceeded recently (like the Sony deal). I've never had a problem streaming myself and wouldn't even know about apart from the 3% refund email Netflix sends out occasionally.
- Rob H.
from FFHound!
What price raise? Seems to me they kept the streaming plan price pretty cheap and have been steadily raising the price of the disc options. That doesn't sound like they're putting more money (per-customer, anyways) behind streaming if they're not charging any more.

Isn't marriage by definition religious, though? In other words, didn't religion—in some form or another—create the concept of marriage and government later claimed jurisdiction over the legalities of marriage? Either way, religion should have say-so in what THEY deem as a binding union or not. However, I think that government should NOT be bound by what religion claims. The legal...

There's a whole lot of truth in that last sentence of yours, Akiva. Generally, I meant.
- Kisha
Yeah, I actually pretty much agree with what Akiva said.
- Jenthemum
I don't know if I agree with that. Religion, even in its most basest and earliest form, existed before government in its most basest and earliest form. People were far more concerned with the terrors of the night than they were the taxation of crops. I'm probably as inexpert as you are in this particular context of this particular topic but my guess is that religion had a lot more to say on the morality of copulation long before government stepped in and applied levies over it.
- Akiva
Furthermore, marriage is about the recognition of status. Anyone can create a long-term commitment with someone else without outside intervention. Through religious marriage, they're asking their particular religion to officially acknowledge that commitment. Through government, they're asking for their particular state to officially acknowledge that commitment. The laws of divorce are...

The part of Catholic doctrine about divorce is quite short.

from Android
I didn't know that. In Judaism, there is tremendous work in trying to protect the wife and her family. The whole concept of the get, although based in the idea that the wife is property, is to protect her, her family, and the dowry from abuse. The Rabbis argue extensively over what can be done to protect women from predatory men.
- Akiva
I never asserted that position. My point is that, today, the 'institution' of marriage is about the recognition of status in religion and in government. If it wasn't, then there'd be absolutely no argument over it at all.
- Akiva
And, for the record, in the religion on which the predominate Christianity and Islam owe their very existence, there is no restriction against polygamy. In fact, in the Talmud, there's a quantification of who should be having sex the most based on their occupation and, as luck would have it, Rabbis topped the list! Funny how that worked out.
- Akiva
And I'm a theist and see a strong need to divide the state application of marriage from the religious definition of one. Although the idea of marriage may have been fluid over time and place, we have to deal with what we have here and now. I do, however, stand by my assertion that the very idea of sanctioned monogamy is a religious conception rather than a governmental one.
- Akiva
Who's trying to change the religious definition of marriage? Most people just find a new religion or just leave religion altogether if it doesn't allow them to marry.
- Rob H.
If marriage is by definion religious, then wouldn't the automatic guardianship of children born to their parents be as well because it predated tax-collecting governments? Parent-child guardianship is considered first and foremost in the domain of human rights, not religious ones.

Are you talking about the in-app filters? For the most part they suck. 'cept for the b&w ones. Oh and the tilt-shift feature isn't bad either. Instagram is great for sharing but that's about it. Most of the people I follow post-process in another app and then just share on Instagram.

Yes but there's no need for 15 filters that do pretty much the same thing just in a different color. If I wanted the old, cheap camera effect I have more fun playing with Hipstamatic. Instagram is primarily a sharing app. The filters are like afterthoughts.

I'm not a fan of the filters in picplz either, but it's turned out to be a great social/sharing app. I tend to post process in Camera360, and just use picplz to post. It sounds as if Instagram doesn't have a lot of sharing options, either. :/

In a world where everyone becomes motivated by the desire for retribution, the only ones who are safe are the dead.

Did you like or dislike the S60 twitter accounts running an alt-history S60 this past week? (MattAlbie60, DannyTripp60, TomJeter60, etc.)
- Andrew C (✓)
I just check those out a bit... Where do folks find the time?
- SAM
It's basically a kind of fanfiction. They could have sat down and wrote it all in one go, then set up a Twitter client to push them out on a schedule.

The Bartlett administration from The West Wing has a whole slew of Twitter stuff like that. So does Ferris Bueller's Day Off. :)
- Lisa | #TeamMonique
Studio 60 is one of the most infuriating television experiences I've ever endured. The pilot was amazing. Wes Mendell's rant at the beginning had all of the power of Sorkin-era West Wing, setting up a stinging satire and critique of censorship, America's double-standard between sex and violence in the media, the emergence of social media, all sorts of things... but within five episodes,...

I'm pretty sure that Akiva has that previous comment saved somewhere as a Word document so he can just insert it whenever someone brings up Studio 60.
- Lisa | #TeamMonique
Yep. What I just typed is not new. I'm a big fan of Sorkin and watching what was essentially the Hindenberg of Sorkin's career was not pleasant (but at least it was far less deadly).
- Akiva
Seriously?!?! It sounded so familiar, but I figured that was simply because your opinion hadn't changed since the last Studio 60 thread.
- Lisa | #TeamMonique
I thought the Hindenberg of Sorkin's career was when be was busted with pot.
- Scoble, Alex Scoble
from YouFeed
Lisa, I didn't actually cut-and-paste that; I typed it fresh. But the sentiment is identical.
- Akiva
Yeah, Alex, that was it. No one in Hollywood has ever been busted with drugs before.
- Akiva
Studio 60 woulda been better with 30 Rock's in-show cast.
- Rob H.
Rob, I disagree. Studio 60's cast was almost as solid as The West Wing. My only disagreements are the inclusion at all of Sarah Paulson who just couldn't sell the character and I would have reversed Whitford and Perry in the roles of Tripp and Albie. Everyone else, especially Timothy Busfield, Judd Hersch, Amanda Peet, and Nathan Corddry were spot on. In my opinion, of course.
- Akiva
Although, to be fair to Sorkin, considering all the accolades that The Social Network got, I'd say that his career is just fine.
- Scoble, Alex Scoble
from YouFeed
Akiva... I definitely see your point. I hadn't seen the series since it originally aired. I've been marathoning through it today, and it's considerably weaker now. Still, the weaker episodes are more entertaining than the majority of shows out there. I was still really on board even at the Parrumph mark... but yeah, not so great now. Imma push on through though... still getting some laughs.
- SAM
His career was always fine, Alex. Remember, he survived getting fired from The West Wing which was one of the most popular and award-winning shows of its time and commanded an obscene percentage of viewers for its time slot.
- Akiva
Scott, wait until the episode with Allison Janney. It's the best of the last and was the one that was supposed to be the final episode but NBC made last-minute rearrangements. Keep that in mind as you see the very last shots of the episode. It's bittersweet.
- Akiva
Chiming in late - yeah, the cast was quite good.
- Andrew C (✓)
To clarify, Studio 60's in-show show was garbage. Gilbert and Sullivan as the big comeback piece? Give me Tracy Morgan.
- Rob H.
Ahh, sorry, I misunderstood your Hindenberg reference to mean that it was an event that killed his career.
- Scoble, Alex Scoble
from YouFeed
Nah, it was just a project of his that went down in flames.
- Akiva
Oh, man, Rob, are you kidding me? The Gilbert and Sullivan thing was fantastic. I practically wanted to stand up and cheer. It's also very typical Sorkin. And the in-show was SUPPOSED to be garbage. Look at Saturday Night Live. It's 90% rubbish. The in-show wasn't the point of Studio 60.
- Akiva
The in-show was garbage, but the problem was Studio 60 didn't present it that way; it presented it as the flawless work of Matt Albie (Sorkin stand-in), certified genius. ... edit: which is why I enjoyed the fake S60 twitter streams so much.
- Andrew C (✓)
Studio 60 was essentially a huge self-deprecating in-joke about Sorkin and The West Wing. The way the series should have gone (and the way I imagine it would have should the studio executives not have gotten involved) is Albie realizing that he's wasting his genius on nonsense and then pushing the in-show from SNL dreck to South Park levels of social commentary or whatever. There were...

Roll call...this can be great if we all participate. Add yourself to this shared map. I created a placemark on the 2 major intersections near where I live.
- Mark Krynsky
Mo, I'm a newb to the shared maps stuff, but I turned on collaboration and allowed anyone to edit the map. There should be an edit button and then you can add a placemark.
- Mark Krynsky
Robert bought me a new house in the northern suburbs.
- Andrew Trinh
@Bec...nice. You are the first brave female on here.
- Mark Krynsky
Cool idea, Mark! I was thinking something like this would be fun the other day. Duly added myself - or at least the nearest big intersection. ;)
- Jandy
Mousing over the usernames shows your Google profile info...cool.
- Mark Krynsky
I marked a bus stop near my house. But not TOO near. :)
- Nine Ferdinand
If you haven't yet...go add FriendFeed to your Google Profile...it will then auto-discover and allow you to add a ton of other profiles you have.
- Mark Krynsky
Thanks for the profile tip - I hadn't updated it since I moved here!
- Jandy
Thanks guys. This is coming along nicely. It's great to have as a resource to see where everyone is from. Hopefully this can become a standard feature on FF one day.

Current count: 13 US, 11 Europe, 3 Australia, 1 Middle East. Happy to see many others add themselves overnight. Hoping more will continue this.
- Mark Krynsky
I've read the instruction and still don't see the button thing to add myself. I'm feeling pretty stupid right now.

@Jill, make sure you are logged into your Google account and then click on the edit button above the list of names already on the map. You will then see the pushpin in the upper left hand side of the map.
- Mark Krynsky
@Neal yea, we really need a FriendFeed meetup. I might be up there for Web 2.0 in March...or we can have one at SXSW if a large number of us are going. Let's plan and get the Upcoming page going.
- Mark Krynsky
Maybe we can talk Paul & Bret into letting us invade the FF offices for a meetup in conjunction with Web 2.0? That would be sooooo cool!
- Mark Krynsky
Pinned! sheesh this just cost me 1/2 hour of time as I scrolled thru all the folks :)
- bear (aka Mike Taylor)
Except for Bret, there are no FriendFeeders on the penninsula between San Jose and San Francisco. So much for Silicon Valley early adopters.
- Ryan Kuder
Cluelessness alert! I'm not seeing how to add my pushpin!
- Hutch Carpenter
For some reason whenever i use google maps in creation-mode, it defaults to some other maps I've used, not the one I'm trying to access - ah, figured it out. Had to de-activate some other collaborative maps

Added. What a great way to see who's on FF in Austin, TX!

There is no conceivable way that I would switch from an Android smartphone to an iPhone. But I am betting that many people are already eager to switch from an iPhone to an Android smartphone.
A creative explosion of Android smartphones is underway, with dozens of original combinations of fascinating features coming into view, a few of which may match your tastes perfectly. There is only one iPhone 4 and one iPhone 5 -- which is rather boring. And the damned display is too small (on 4, at least).
- Sean McBride
Compare the latest iPhone to an Android 4G LTE with a 4.3 inch Super AMOLED Plus display, and see what you think. Maybe you'll become a convert.
- Sean McBride
I like the idea that there are only one iPhone 4 and one iPhone 5 a positive as it lets developers create apps to a set standard, kind of like console gaming.
- Rob H.
I've always been a fan of creative, high-energy chaos, the messiness be damned. But I guess even Google is now having second thoughts about permitting too much freedom for Android developers.
- Sean McBride
Switching to iPhone from Android as soon as 5 comes out. There's a lot to like with Android, but I want prettier apps and I want them first in the development timeline. I want a closed infrastructure with strict app standards.
- Jonathan Hardesty
I'm betting that Android will offer more apps than iPhone, sell more apps than iPhone, and draw more attention from developers than iPhone within the next 12 months -- probably sooner. And the interface will get prettied up and polished.
- Sean McBride
Just saw the likely specs for the iPhone 5 -- the 3.7 display would be a deal breaker for me. I am betting that the most popular smartphones will end up closer to 5 inches than 4 inches in display size -- mini-tablets, essentially.
- Sean McBride
Nope. But the competition is good for both of us. All of us. About the only thing that appeals to me on Android is the better native Maps app.
- Nathan Chase
I definitely value and revel in the competition -- the more the better. Regarding predictions: once again, the hard sales numbers will be the final judge. Let's check back in six months.
- Sean McBride
To be honest, I'm more impressed with Windows Phone 7 in terms of UI than Android OS.
- Nathan Chase
Can you envision Windows Phone 7 catching fire at this stage of the game? I can't, but you never know. Microsoft has caught up after falling behind before. I know very few people who are even looking at it.
