I can understand arguing for open source and evolving past closed systems, but people love brands. People no longer say “Your number is in my phone.” Instead they say “Oh I have that in my iPhone.” “Or it’s already in my Blackberry.” Honestly, how long have we all been saying Band-aid, Q-tip, and Kleenex? - http://tkot.tumblr.com/post...
He does, but I think his fur is shorter on his face! Also, he is missing a leg. That's how we can tell them apart! He always fidgets too much for pictures, so it was a rare treat to have him sitting still until Bella came and caused him to move.

He looks a lot like my RubyRoo, except her "black fur face mask" just covers the top of her head, ending immediately below her eyes, so her nose, mouth and lower cheeks are snowy white. Did I mention that she has "cute tootsie roll poops?"

Joe, my parents brought it to me from a trip to Hawaii so it came from an artist local to there, but my aunt makes similar glass beads (and other things). She actually lives in NC, though, so I suppose she's not local either. But she is talented :)

Wondering if we really need to see these tweets in real time on Google search results.... the quality of these tweets seems to be very low. Maybe Google should be filtering tweets.. Not sure how this is useful at all to someone searching Google for "Tiger Woods"
I think this will only increase twitter spam :(( Google is usually very very religious about their search result quality... not sure how this got through...
- Bindu Reddy
Exactly, the more you tweet, the better your chances are for a site hit

It's good to bring more users to twitter though, as they keep getting twitter rubbed into their face. That being said I should try that search.
- Richard A.
Interesting. So you can try spam these services, and get a high position on Google immediately. But filtering... based on what? The usual filters work on authority which in turn often works on ratings, citations, backlinks etc., and these won't be real-time because people first have to see and digest the message in question in order to link, cite and rate it.
- Philipp Lenssen
It auto-updates and that is an interesting feature. That's something I could see some use for :-)
- Richard A.
On the spam and SEO topic. Don't you think it'd measure retweet strength. If a lot of people retweet a subject then the link would be more relevant/interesting than if just one person retweets. Sorry for going slightly off topic. As an aside do retweets move back up to the top of the search? Should try cop15 and see how it behaves.
- Richard A.
@Philipp: smart question (as usual). I guess that Google's rank/filter could be based not on the tweet, but on the tweeter: e.g. someone who has many followers is a good source, etc. E.g. Google too should (in this case) change its paradigm, switching from a "web of pages" to a "web of people".

@Philipp You have nailed the issue :) It is really really difficult to get a good grip on "quality" if the information/data is real-time. I still can't really figure out what the motivation behind doing something like this on the Google main search results is.

I'm watching Craig Ferguson's show for the very first time. He is talking with Shirley Manson and they are cracking me up. I might have to make this a regular habit. I like this guy.
He's not the second coming, but he's very entertaining. I like him best of all the late night hosts, not counting Jon Stewart or Stephen Colbert. If you want to crack up, watch this (two parter) http://www.youtube.com/watch...

I think he currently does the best monologues on late night TV.
- Rob Haas
I've been watching his show for the most part since he started. He is the smartest out of all the late night talk show hosts, yet he doesn't ever get the respect he deserves. His stand up comedy is hysterical. I saw him live a couple years ago and he has a very smart wit. :) And for you Drew Carey Show fans, he's Mr. Wick from the show.

OK: this is weird. I came back from a party and went to bed around 2am. I woke up around 5am by cat, went into kitchen/great room to feed her, and balcony door was open. The front door was unlocked. Nothing stolen so far. My laptop was in a bag on the kitchen table, and it wasn't taken.
It wasn't particularly windy last night, but that's the only reason I can think the back door was open.
- anna sauce
It's 2 French doors, that I usually bolt together to close, and bolt one on the top to the frame. I am forgetful, so I could have left it unlocked, and the cat opened it.
- anna sauce
A drunk wandered into the wrong apartment?
- Rob Haas
Tip your waitress. I'm here all week.
- Russellreno
yeah I'm wondering if it was a combination of cat + wind. So weird.
- anna sauce
Rob- I'm on the 2nd floor, it's quite a climb. There were some leaves on the balcony too- wonder if it was a tree-entrance? Still the computer and purse and stuff were untouched.
- anna sauce
I don't know much about you or the party you went to, but I guess you excluded the possibility of an alcohol- or other substance-induced lapse in memory?
- Tudor Bosman
Tudor, I'm betting on it. I hear 'party' and 'door open' and it's case closed for me.
- Cristo
Tudor, Cristo, didn't exclude it, it's just unusual. I wasn't that gone actually, just very tired. Came in, had some water, changed into PJs, washed my face, all kind of normal non-drunken stuff. Wasn't dehydrated or anything when I woke up at 5. I'd stopped drinking a few hours before coming home. And then, didn't have more than 3 (started at 8). So... sure, absentminded, but don't...

I saw this suspicious looking guy today on the steps. Suspicious because he looks like some other folks who have stolen stuff from the garage & building. I had to peruse a lot of surveillance cams when my bike was stolen first month I was here. :(
- anna sauce
anna, I'm sure if you put your mind to it, you could become the partier we think you are. Also, have you thought of befriending this potential burglar? Perhaps if you were super nice him, he might think twice about robbing you. Also, it could improve your party points if you shared a bottle of vodka with a random guy in your place. :P
- Cristo
More expensive than the stuff that could be stolen, not to mention safety? If I thought someone might have come into my place while I was sleeping, the locks would be changed the next day.
- Cristo
I can't explain it, and it's illogical, but I just have a feeling that nobody was here.
- anna sauce
Do you remember locking up as you came in? I've left the door open when I have been really tired (or just not closed it all of the way). Cristo might have a good suggestion though - safer to change the locks.
- Jennifer Dittrich
I just checked all of the windows (if the burglar set an easier point of entry, for example) and put lots of doodads on the sills so it'll make noise. Double-checked all the locks. Just being urban-savvy. I'm sure I'm fine. Yeah Jennifer, I could have left it unlocked when I came in. It's the balcony doors open wide that freaked me out.

Um, sleepwalking? (I used to "get up" and turn all of the lights on when I got stressed out.)

"Disney has debuted the first official trailer for The Sorcerer's Apprentice on Apple. This new action-adventure movie stars Nicolas Cage as the Sorcerer Balthazar Blake, Jay Baruchel as his Apprentice, Monica Bellucci, Alfred Molina, Teresa Palmer, and Toby Kebbell. The Sorcerer's Apprentice is Disney's other big summer movie in addition to Prince of Persia. I loved Enchanted and I've been crossing my fingers hoping this would have as much Disney magic as that movie did. It definitely looks nothing like that, much darker and intense, but the visuals look amazing. You'll be surprised and I'm pretty frickin' excited to see this now!"

Chieze, it feels like a strange alternate universe version of National Treasure. Same players, same director and producer, and...of course, Cage.
- Derrick
That said, the visuals ARE pretty amazing. Oh, yeah Derrick, now that you mention it, yeah it does. (Kinda like how The Prestige felt like Bizarro world Batman Begins for the same reason)
- Chieze Okoye
Yeah, the lines sounded mediocre at best (eye-rollingly bad at worst -- thanks Mr. Cage), but the visuals sold it for me. I'm probably going to end up watching it.
- Chieze Okoye
The still above is almost enough to make me want to watch it. I love Nick Cage. the good movies are good, and the bad movies are fun.
- DJF
wow...it at least looks interesting. a cross between wanted, pirates of the Caribbean, and national treasure perhaps
- Sir Shuping
Cage is the same character in every movie, just with different hairpieces.
- rowlikeagirl
does cage even have hair anymore? I kinda of think he just wears a different wig depending upon his mood you know?
- Sir Shuping
I once ran into Cage a comic book store in '98-'99 when he was going to do Burton's Superman. He's a substantial man. Very broadchested. I can't really comment on his hair.
- Derrick
THis is not being my usual Disney Fan Boy/Shill but I got to see it on the big screen today (the Trailer) and every time I've seen new footage of this film, it makes me want to see more of it. Unlike the National Treasure flicks (which I've seen none of and is made by the same team), this looks hella impressive and fun. A science nerd who has to learn magic to save the world? "“The events of the last few months have put a serious dent in the idea that gay marriage is inevitable,” said Maggie Gallagher, the president of the National Organization for Marriage, which opposes same-sex marriage. The movement to expand marriage to include gays and lesbians has gathered force from the perception that it’s a historic civil rights battle, and that its foes are – as advocates often say – on the “wrong side of history.” That’s a message that has animated supporters, silenced opposition – just one New York legislator, for instance, stood up to explain his “no” vote – and generated its own momentum. It has also penetrated broadly into the culture, said Democratic pollster Diane Feldman, whose surveys have found a solid majority of Americans view same-sex marriage as inevitable, “and are variously pleased or resigned to that.”"

Maybe I'm just a glass-half-empty guy, but I think that achieving marriage equality is something that will be distanced for a long time. Too much homophobia, hatred, people lacking the basic empathy to be compassionate and understanding. No one is asking for something MORE than what's fair; no one is asking for anything special; and no one is looking to strip people from what they currently have. But people just don't see it that way, and it makes me very sad.
- Derrick
Derrick, your commentary is spot on. It reminds me of a quote I saw somewhere (I think on FF a while ago) where someone said "why don't the people who are looking to 'protect the institution of marriage' ban divorce? - Pete, Enabling Force
Pete, but it wouldn't become "not-X" it would become a superset of X.
- Chieze Okoye
Oh I dunno. For some people gay marriage would make marriage not marriage. Or something.
- Pete, Enabling Force
People really get too hung up on nomenclature. I think it literally comes down to people feeling that for them, marriage is an exclusive thing. No comment on those who disrespect the institution of it, Tiger Woods, Gov. of South Carolina, etc. for those like me where the very option, isn't an option.
- Derrick
Amen Derrick. MArriage should be about love and commitment, not plumbing.
- Pete, Enabling Force
I will be disappointed, to say the very least, if marriage equality is not the norm within my lifetime. If I am fortunate enough to have children, and any of them are gay and *can't* get married, I will find a way to get them some place they *can* #bigotryisbigotry

I think people should insist on calling it marriage. As long as it is called anything else, it gives people room to think of it as less than, and therefore invalid.
- cecily
from iPhone
The problem with the "m" word Cecily is that it steps into the religious arena. In Canada they explicitly gave religious institutions the right to refuse to perform same-sex marriages in their churches in order to appease those groups.
- Kenton
Because of the separation of church and state, any religious institution that opposes same sex marriage could refuse to perform the ceremony. This is not really about religion, though. This is about equal protection under law. "Marriage" carries certain legal rights and protections which are currently not available to same-sex couples. In the United States this should be a source of shame.
- Bren, Not Grinchy
from iPhone
Then get rid of the word for everybody, Kenton. We shouldn't be in the business of legislating religious ceremonies. Let everyone have a legally-binding marriage (or civil union) and then, if religious-minded folks want to have a religious ceremony, let them go and have it. They can call it "merry booty-gettin' day" for all I care. But to use different words to describe the same legally-binding civil ceremony is not only unfair, it's just flat out wrong.
- cecily
And also: regardless of where the ceremony is performed in Canada, it is still called marriage.
- cecily
I haven't read the full thread .... I might later... But I just want to say that Cecily is full of win. I *heart* her so...
- MASTER OF THE OBVIOUS
Cecily, I don't think you are wrong, just pointing out that it's that word that causes all the ruckus, but it is easily solved.
- Kenton
Bren I'm just curious, because I don't think it is the same in Canada; what rights do marriages give you that civil unions don't?
- Kenton
I have long felt that Cecily's point is key: let the government recognize civil unions, and let all the churches that currently have the right to marry people have the right to do civil unions for any two adults that they are happy to perform that ceremony for.
- s t e v e
The word causes the ruckus because people know the word is important. Either nobody gets married or everybody does.
- cecily
Marriage = social capital. Marriage = community acceptance (to a degree). Even in heterosexual couples, people's reaction changes when a common-law couple decides to "make it legal". By denying social capital to LGBT citizens, we're essentially telling them that no matter what they do, their "civil union" isn't good enough in the eyes of the community.
- cecily
So, in the US, if you don't have the ceremony in a church, you aren't actually considered married?
- Kenton
i agree with c. i think "civil union" should be the term regardless of who is gettin' hitched. i think "marriage" is a form of "civil union" and we would do well to consider it such. too many people automatically add ", a union before G-d" to the end of the word "marriage." i think muddies the water when we start talking about marriage equality, which is a legal issue and not necessarily a religious one.
- tiffany
Kenton, not quite. In the US, the local government issues the marriage license, which must then be validated by an authorized person. That can be a Judge, a Justice of the Peace, a Minister, perhaps others. Compare that to UK, where until 1998 or so you could ONLY be married in a Registry Office, or in Chile, where you MUST have a civil wedding in a government building, but you can also have a religious ceremony in a church if you want to.
- John Craft
I'm for removing the term "marriage" from the license. Domestic partnership contracts/civil unions for any two consenting adults regardless of sex or gender identification, and people can call it whatever they like in accordance with their religious sensibilities or lack thereof. Problem solved.

The joy of eating street food is rooted not only in the flavors, but also in the experience. Sometimes it's more about the latter than the former. This curious establishment was on the 'hit list' that a friend passed to us before we drove to Hat Yai and Songkhla last June. It resides under a stage erected in the courtyard of a temple smack in the middle of the city's Chinatown. For the period between 2011 and 2014, when the exchanges do open, the Medicare option will not be subsidized (and so will likely be quite expensive). However, after the exchanges launch, the Medicare...

This doesn't sound as bad as the initial reports, but it's still not very good.

I had been afraid there would only be the extension to FEHBP run by private insurance companies, which seemed pretty useless. I doubt very much this particular trigger will be pulled, so don't care much about it one way or the other. But the Medicare buy-in for ages 55-64 has the potential to be very helpful, and if that stays in, I'll be happy.

I want to see what medicare at 55 looks like, so far my laid off friends 60 and run out their cobra then are utterly expensively stuck until 65 some with pre-existing conditions can't get insurance for any price - this could be a huge benefit bridging to 65 even if its expensive as typical cobra

What's the public option trigger look like? I mean, could insurance companies forestall it by offering nationwide, but _unaffordable_ plans?

Why is there a delay of years at all? Set it to next month, or the public option kicks in.
- Andy Bakun
I don't think there should be a delay. I think the main reason for it is an accounting trick, to make the 10-year budget number smaller.

Andrew: According to what I've read, the public option would be triggered if none of the insurance companies offered non-profit, nationwide plans through the exchange.

Ruchira and WarLord: I think allowing people 55-64 to buy into Medicare (or a Medicare-like government plan) is the best aspect of the deal that I've seen so far, and one that should have been there from the beginning. It won't help me, but it's still an improvement for the country as a whole.

I'm confused with all this Chrome extension stuff. I've had extensions on Chrome for Windows at work for weeks. Was that because I was on the dev channel and now it's on the stable channel, is that what's new today? Does everyone have themes, or is that a dev channel thing too?
I think part one is that it's available on the Beta channel now (you're right, it's been on Dev channel for a while). Part two is that they opened up the official Chrome Extensions Gallery (https://chrome.google.com/extensi...)

But wasn't that gallery already available on the dev channel? On the new tab page, it put a bunch of puzzle pieces on the bottom right that led to a page of extensions. That was a couple of weeks ago. There are a lot more in it now than there were then, though. Kinda frustrating that they disabled the Mac extensions, though - it's making my brain confused (I've had extensions on both for weeks, now everyone's talking about extensions being new, but I can't have them anymore at home). :/

I don't believe that it was available to wide release till today. I didn't see it till today and I've been on Dev channel for a while now, too.
