I know they're very different kinds of acting. But I thought the crux of Kol's question was people who are primarily actors who also do music (I fully admit I then listed a lot of musicians that went into acting). Musical theater actors FROM THE BEGINNING are people who do both music and acting. It's part of the job description. (This is not to say they're not talented...I'm just saying it's not as remarkable a mix in a musical theater actor as it is in your garden variety film/TV actor.)

Spidra, I think the only difference is timing. Some start with one and add the other, some start with both. That said, you will notice I am treating musical theatre as a singing career and not listing anyone who hasn't also appeared on TV or a major motion picture that doesn't involve singing.

This evening I made an interesting soup/stew. Fry off scallions and chorizo in a little olive oil, add kale cut into thin strips, 1 1/2 pints of chicken or veg stock, smoked paprika and a large squeeze of tomato puree. Next add in a tin (240g) of chick peas, stir well and leave to simmer for about 20 mins. We had ours with gnocci, but it's just as good with crusty bread.

I'm not sure what the answer is. It's true that LSW definitely has a presence here, and I'm sure that's why some people are here. Others might have come because they knew people who were already here. A few prominent library bloggers have feeds here, so that could attract some, as well. Tech and social media is part of some librarians' jobs, so they might have originally checked it out for those reasons. The reasons probably differ for all of us.

Jasmin, there are professional companies that specialize in industrial/heavy duty waste cleanup and such that can be hired to come clear out everything. I've priced a few and they're ridiculously expensive. Of course, there's then an issue of pest control if there are bugs, mold control if there is mold, etc.

Tad, for younger people, it's usually depression combined with Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder. Schizophrenics can also end up with homes like that due to the utter lack of organization in any part of their life. In older adults, it's usually depression combined with dementia.

Jasmin, it would be worth if for sure if the person was moving out. But to do a cleanup for someone who will continue living there, it's not worth it unless they're also being treated for the problem. Otherwise, they'll fill the apartment right back up again in no time.

Rochelle's right, but I don't think this person is a hoarder. Usually hoarder's houses are full of stuff that are somehow meaningful to them like old newspapers or magazine and other stuff which is often stacked relatively neatly. A friend's mom was a really bad hoarder, but she didn't have ANY food or other unsanitary stuff laying around. Her house smelled fine - it was just full (to the ceilings) of junk (newspapers, mail, etc)

This hits pretty close to home. My dad is borderline with hoarding. It's probably why I went in the opposite direction with being a neat freak. He doesn't keep food, but seemingly everything else. I dread the day he dies and I have to deal with his house +5 storage units of stuff.

Seriously, hoarding can get pretty awful. It's not uncommon for them to keep things that healthy adults would consider garbage, like fast-food wrappers, already-opened envelopes. There are people who even store all their stool and urine in baggies and in cups.

Rochelle, do people who suffer from this tend to also ignore their health? I have a friend who lived this way who died recently and she ignored all her symptoms until it was too late. We spent days cleaning out her house and found about $10,000 worth of stuff never taken out of the original wrappers and mail order boxes.

Oh, I'm totally late in responding to Trish R's question. But yes, Trish, that's very common because people with hoarding problems generally have coexisting mental illness, which goes hand-in-hand with neglect of personal health care.

Very sad. (I'm surprised it hasn't all gone up in flames.) I bet many of us know someone with some version of this problem, and some of us might have milder forms of it from time to time. (My stuff does get messy, but I'll go into purge mode periodically to get rid of all the crap. My problem is more that I run out of time daily to tend to some stuff properly. I definitely don't leave food out and stuff like that, though.)

Oh man, we have a friend who pronounces suave as 'swav-ay'. The first time I heard her say it, I laughed because I thought she was being facetious to the person she was talking to. Over the years, I've learned that's that how she says it and insists because she's French, that's how the French say it. I've never heard a French person use it, but my BIL who is French said she's wrong.

I will NOT get baited into ... ah CRAP. I follow very few people on twitter, mainly only to find info from Android developers (my topic of choice). If you mention anything about the food you are currently eating, etc.. you will probably not be followed. If you post 80,000 times a day, you will not be followed, since Twitters interface sucks (not so for FF). Also, no offense to other social users, but if you resend your FF/FB/<insert other social site here> entries to twitter, I probably won't follow.

still wondering how you are able to handle such a big load of subscribers here and e.g. so many followers with twitter o_0. I am already (sometimes) lost with the few i got till now. Lately with one sweep almost 40 to 50 contacts in twitter disappeard and i have no clue why ... boah, how are you handling the noise? Hell, with so many ppl in, you might have a terrific noise? Or you wear just good headphones ;)?

I very much agree that being choosy is the key to Twitter. I'm not nearly on the scale that you are, but in my experience, freely following people (whetther they follow me or not) and then mercilessly cutting back on them over and over again results in a kind of darwinianly better and better signal to noise ratio.

I have a second account that I decided to experiment with. I followed about 700 people on there. It has had about double the followers of my main account consistently. It occurred to me (and surely to someone before me), that different definitions of "following" might be a big factor here. If I'm following someone, it means I'm following along with their updates. But others might see themselves more as becoming part of a person's "following". Not that they are necessarily reading the person's stuff, but they are willing to be considered part of that person's inflated Twitter posse, as part of the influence-trading aspect of Twitter.

Bryan: because I'm following people one by one and putting them into lists on my screen. Autofollowing means you aren't doing ANY of that thinking. Also, autofollowing will get you spammers, if they ever show up (and they will).

Very interesting post - I've always thought that you guys who follow loads of people must get completely swamped by noise! Like you, I've found it useful to follow companies I use that have interesting products like Zoho and Evernote as a way of keeping up to date with their latest innovations. I've never understood the auto-follow procedure on any social network. Even on Facebook, where it is obligatory, one can still lower the noise by simply hiding the updates of those who want to follow you, but perhaps also have little personal connection and therefore can be hidden.

It seems like the unfollowing was the easy part. Choosing who to follow again must have been a chore. I think it is crucial in twitter (and FriendFeed for that matter) to have a clear out every six months or so otherwise you get bogged down in an information feed you don't really care about.

Hey Robert... Great post... On FriendFeed, I increasingly put people without meaningful and valuable content on a separate feed that I rarely check... Its a more "sensible" way to unfollow, i think... I only unsubscribe if I get pissed at someone etc. I wish, FF gave users the option to only unsubscribe from comments and likes (but keep the main feed). This would be a good tool to control the noise...

I agree with Robert (duh!). I very briefly made the effort of checking out the new follows and deciding whether to follow back. I think once I hit a thousand I shifted to a model of occasionally saying, "If you want me to follow you, talk to me." Hit two thousand and quit saying anything or checking followers. I don't care if they follow me as long as they either say useful things like real people or don't talk at all. I've never autofollowed back. This strategy works for me.

I have a large difference between people I follow (around 2000) and people who follow me (around 1800) - I choose people who are important sources of information. People choose me if they think I am an important source of information to them. I never thought it would have to be a one-to-one relationship as to who is useful to whom: some are informative, others are good listeners and learners. I learn from people I follow and I hope my followers learn from me.

"Spam followers matter.... in a bad way." - I certainly agree with this. I block pornbots just as quickly as they follow me. I'm less vigilant about the commercial follows, but usually they go away by themselves after a while.

@Andrew Regarding spam followers and the idea that allowing them to follow you somehow dilutes your credibility, I just have to disagree. To me that places the burden on the wrong person. I don't have time to waste pruning those who follow me, unless they are overtly annoying.My stream is public, they can follow me anyway. What matters to me is that the spammers leave me alone. If they don't, I block them. If they keep quiet, I don't care.

Funny my twitter feed is much noisier but I have been very selective on who I follow. I have tried to make the feed relevant and actionable. At times I post things that seem out of the norm on my twitter feed but that is mainly for the few people who follow me that don't get it but I am trying to keep up their interest level. How do you really know if you should be following someone until you follow them for a while? Sometimes I don't start talking to someone until I see a common interest, then I tweet back and we start talking, but that could be months later. I don't follow everyone back, but I follow back those that interact. I will unfollow once I see that won't happen, or I don't like their tweets.

Just goes to show the differences in language. I make flapjacks that hubby takes to work and he had a very weird conversation about flapjacks with a colleague and it was only after they both got really confused did they realise they were talking about completely different things called 'flapjacks'
