"Almost a year ago, I won an Oscar for writing Milk, a film about a famous gay-rights pioneer. My acceptance speech was a call for gay rights that got me lots of attention and plenty of hate mail. Then last summer, my film was banned by the college in the small Midwestern town where I was scouting my next project. It would have stayed that way, if not for an unlikely coalition of conservative local leaders, students, and a gay kid in short-shorts who fought to get the film its due—and gave the town some hope. While scouting in West Michigan last spring, I was led to the small city of Holland, a picturesque hamlet with strong Dutch roots, and the place where I would start pre-production on my directorial debut—my first project since Milk. I packed up and moved there last August. The sun was warm and the reception from the town even warmer. I hadn’t run across such courteous people since I left Texas when I was 13 years old. As I drove down College Avenue, I passed a school. The sign...

Leo calling his mom on air, invading her privacy(?) - want her to login to Facebook to see privacy settings, was - as Dvorak just said - radio/podcast history. Great moment. :)

Keep your salary. For the work you do and the trail you're blazing, you deserve the salary, donations and more. Facebook = Walmart. Schmit Vader is a good Sith name. Great show

Leo, with all due respect, this idea of having people donate money to pay your salary while they still have to endure the ads is seriously screwed up. It's a real insult to your audience. Think about it. I love you man, but this is really messed up. Oh, and don't ever tell people you're objective when it comes to sponsors with this whole Sync/Mustang crap. You edited out my comments on...

- Bill Heald
Actually, commenting when you dont know the whole story is "screwed up." The donations are a way for the Community to buy into and have a part in the Twit network. Similar to a commune or buying a stake in the network. This model actually reduces the amount he takes from the big picture, while still allowing us to take part (donations.) It is obvious these comments are coming out of old...

echostreamer, I love your comment because I love being accused of "old media thinking." I don't give a flying rat's ass about Leo's model, or yours, or anybody else's because I'm speaking as a consumer of the TWiT product. And I'm not going to pay Leo for his media while having to listen to ads, any more than I would pay for any audiobook that was filled with ads. Old media will soon be...

oh, and why did you delete your first comment... i thought it was pretty good
- Chris Heath
I work in big media also. The only difference between you and me is that I know the ships going down and Leo's got the life raft. I sniffed you out as old media, I get credit for that right? This isn't a multinational corporation, the rules are different for advertising, revenue, and donations (not to be confused with subscriptions.) Your rebuttal is a spelling correction.....nice...

No, I don't consider myself old media, or big media, or new media. I'm just a journalist, who does print, web, you name it. Twit is all free, you dont have to pay anything. Its completely free to all of us. If you are talking about "print" media, you pay for the product AND have to endure the ads. English speakers: there is no need to pronounce Copenhagen as "Copenhah-gen" It is not more authentically Danish if you pronounce it that way. You see, Danes call that city København. If you want to be more authentically Danish, call the city that. If you use the English name for the city, pronounce it "Copenhay-gen".
It's a bit silly that every language has to rewrite the names for other countries' places. Why can't we all call places by what the locals call them? But in the absence of that, yeah, might as well not be a poseur.
- LogEx
Is it really officially "Copenhay-gen" in English? I feel like I've heard it "Copenhah-gen" as a matter of course, not as a way to be more elite/authentic. Both sound equally acceptable to me, neither sounds more pretentious or anything than the other.
- Jandy, ConcertMaven of FF
Jandy, maybe you just hang out with more high-brow types than we do ;)
- LogEx
I was just trying to figure out which I'd naturally say if I weren't thinking about, and I have no idea. Probably because I'm thinking about it.
- Jandy, ConcertMaven of FF
I tried four times to correct my above comment, changing the "I" to "I'll" but was foiled each time! Anyway, for what it's worth, København literally translates as "Buying Port" or "Buying Harbor" because of its origins as a trading center...
- Mark "DerBingle" J
+LogEx. Once I was old enough to learn for myself that foreign places had their own localized designations (or at least pronounciation) I thought it pretty stupidly ego-centric to keep using the Western/Anglo version we made up for them.
- ɐ ɯıʞ sıɹɥɔ
from iPhone
The worst part of it is that we're not even consistent! When I was a kid it was Peking and Bombay. Now it's Beijing and Mumbai, which is fine, but why didn't we get it right in the first place. Maybe we'll just rotate the "preferred" name on a bi-decennial basis?
- Mark "DerBingle" J
But yeah, generally I agree with LogEx. Is it that hard to say "Italia" or "Praha" or "Firenze" instead of Italy, Prague, and Florence? No. But if you actually used those names in English, it'd be way pretentious. You'd have to get everyone to do it first, like Mark's examples.
- Jandy, ConcertMaven of FF

"It's a bit silly that every language has to rewrite the names for other countries' places." - not really, it makes sense to re-write the name to a rough phonetic equiv. in the target language. That's what people are getting at, I think, having it sound similar. On the other hand, we'd have to learn where the heck Suomi is :) http://translate.google.com/#en|fi|...
- Richard pancakhaus Walker
So funny how this post was just lying here quietly then suddenly got discovered! a) I have no problem pronouncing Göteborg albeit with a slight American accent. Ahhh, but then say you try to say the local version and pronounce it wrong when asking for directions or something...suddenly you're heading in entirely the wrong direction and you don't even know it. I've always said HAY not HAH, and that had the approval of a one-time Danish friend.

If you wanted to be cool (at least in Norway) you would just call it "Køben" (with a "ch" sound at the beginning) :)

"ch"? Kinda like how Swedes pronounce, "att köpa" then?
- Spidra Webster
I always pronounce it "Copenhäagen-Dazs"
- Jim Norris
Spidra: Exactomundo. Swedes do that too. Whilst the Danish use a normal "k" sound (as you´re probably familiar with)
- Thomas Bøhm
some places change names, often through independence, such as a number of African countries, or places like Ceylon, which became Sri Lanka
- Ian May
Oh yeah. It's just odd that Göteborg is changing its name to the Anglicization of its name. In the case of Oslo it's almost as weird because Christiania is the colonial name. It was named after Denmark's King Christian IV. It would be almost like Cork, Ireland changing its name back to Queenstown.
- Spidra Webster
But Danny Kaye sang "Wonderful, Wonderful, Co-pen-hah-gen" in "Hans Christian Anderson." So that's what we learned.
- m9m, Crone of FriendFeed
Yes, but I'm positive that's because somebody thought that "posh" way of saying it would sound more authentically Danish.
- Spidra Webster
Reading this made me realize how many Western American cities are Spanish named, but pronounced in American English.
- Rob Haas
While we're at it: "Häagen-Dazs" is pure marketing: it is simply two made-up words meant to look Scandinavian to American eyes (in fact, the digraphs "äa" and "zs" are impossible in all Scandinavian languages)" http://friendfeed.com/zee...
- Micah Wittman
Correct. I worked at Häagen-Dazs (in fact, I spoke Swedish with a co-worker) and it always amused/irked me. I always thought Frusen Glädje at least had it right but I just looked it up and they were actually Frusen Glädjé, which is incorrect Swedish. But we do it a lot. Especially with é to make things sound French. Even taking genuine things like "le tigre" and making them "le tigré".
- Spidra Webster
True, Rob. A Cuban-American friend of mine makes fun of some of the worst ones. OTOH, it's pretty understandable for a place that was overrun by another nation. Roman placenames in Britain remained but were pronounced differently by those that succeeded them.
- Spidra Webster
Copen- hay-gen is the correct way. I twitch every time I hear the other one. As for Häagen-Dazs, it doesn't really sound Scandinavian, more like southern German/Austrian or something like that..

Both Andy and Joe have been more than generous in picking up on the stuff I write about here on Blabbeando and I haven't always acknowledged it or thanked them for it. This gives me a chance to highlight their tremendous work and also say gracias. Additionally, when it comes to these interviews, I also had the pleasure of transcribing the original interviews from Rex's digital recorder while I was in Maine in early November to cover the heartbreaking marriage equality vote so, in some ways, I am incredibly familiar with their words. "...My only hope as a young atheist growing up was to find some group where I belonged that offered a significant degree of solidarity without intellectual and emotional disparagement. This is the hope of all humans to a greater or lesser degree. As an atheist, groups such as this one were, for a long time, something I hoped to find brotherhood and companionship in. Alas, no matter how “intellectual” and socially “sophisticated” atheists and academics claim to be, they are, in every instance, whiny, disagreeable and emotionally incompetent. I have, as I said, more or less withdrawn from all social circles as atheist groups are not the only groups, of course, to allow an emergent tribalism and exclusivity to dominate relations. "(AP) Til death do us part? The vow would really hold true in California if a Sacramento Web designer gets his way. In a movement that seems ripped from the pages of Comedy Channel writers, John Marcotte wants to put a measure on the ballot next year to ban divorce in California. The effort is meant to be a satirical statement after California voters outlawed gay marriage in 2008, largely on the argument that a ban is needed to protect the sanctity of traditional marriage. If that's the case, then Marcotte reasons voters should have no problem banning divorce. "Since California has decided to protect traditional marriage, I think it would be hypocritical of us not to sacrifice some of our own rights to protect traditional marriage even more," the 38-year-old married father of two said. Marcotte said he has collected dozens of signatures, including one from his wife of seven years. The initiative's Facebook fans have swelled to more than 11,000. Volunteers that include gay activists...

While I love the point this effort makes I think if it passed it would do far more to hurt marriage. My suspicion is that if it were enacted that marriage would all but cease to happen in California.

Today is a day long coming... A day of sadness... A day I want to just lock myself away and hide... but a day I know I can't, that's not what he would have wanted and not what he taught me how to operate... I'm so scared...
If he had a friend like you, I'm thinking that he was a quality man that is now in a much better place. Thoughts and prayers for all that knew and loved him.
- Morgan Haley
So sorry to hear this Johnny, my condolences. :(
- Charlotte M
Aww, fcuk, man, that's rough. When/if you're ready to talk about it, you know we'll be here, mate. If not, well...., you know we'll be here, mate. :-(
- Andrew Terry
Sorry to hear about it. You obviously held him in high regard. That's not always the case with bosses. Sincere condolences from half-a-world away.
- .LAG liked that
You guys are helping more than you ever will know :)
- Johnny Worthington
I'm so sorry, Johnny. It's great that you cared so much for your boss - or that you worked for someone you cared so much about, looked at another way. But that does make it harder now. {{hugs}}
- Jandy, ConcertMaven of FF
No doubt he'd have been pleased to hear you held him in such high regard. Good thoughts during a hard time.
- Jack (a.k.a. Jeber)
Oh my gosh, Johnny. I just saw this. I am so sorry for your loss. My thoughts are with you, your coworkers, and your boss's friends and family.
- Call me Bronco
My boss killed himself back in February. Didn't feel the same as you, TBH. Dude was a real PITA to deal with. Condolences anyway, sorry for your loss.
- LANjackal
Hugs to you and your family, Johnny. So sorry for your loss... :-(
- Lisa L. Seifert
Oh, Johnny, I just saw this now. I'm so sorry for this loss. The pain of it helps tell you that it's real; the friendship and the beauty of knowing and caring for someone deeply. My heart goes out to you.
- Micah Wittman
Sounds like a special guy, sorry to hear about the loss, buddy. :(
- Pete Delucchi
Yahoo seems to have forgotten it is a "internet technology" company. First it decided to give up on search and now it's decided to give up on profiles/identities.
Why do you think we've given up on profiles/identities?
- Mistletoe Glen
from iPhone
I still use Flickr. I'd hate to see the likes of Microsoft get hold of it.
- Ian May
Glen, if I were Yahoo , I would have come up with my own better version of FB connect. Right now FB connect has a couple of issues that it would be great for someone to address. Instead by adopting FB connect it seems to be doing the opposite thing.
- Bindu Reddy
Glen, my brother works at Yahoo as well :) I think they have some great pdts. However I was bummed when I heart about the search deal and now I am not sure what to make of the connect announcement
- Bindu Reddy
Distributed data is the best thing to happen on the web. Period. Too bad Yahoo! took so long to implement a FB Connect or a similar OAuth API sign in method.
- Mona Nomura
I have to be honest and say that I don't think I'll find much use myself in the Yahoo/Facebook connect thing, but that's not a reflection on Yahoo, so much as I'm a reluctant Facebook user. I understand why they've done it though.
- Ian May
I am all for taking your data with you / using the same login in many sites etc. However, Yahoo being one of the few big players should also be focussing in coming up it's own compelling version of connect. If it does have one I am not sure any big site uses it today...
- Bindu Reddy
Mona, what I am trying to say is that Yahoo seems to be on the path of simply using technology developed by others. If I were them I would be implementing a a better version of FB connect - Yahoo Connect.
- Bindu Reddy
That is what I don't understand - can you elaborate on better version?
- Mona Nomura
So as an internet tech company what is Yahoo core competency? Lately they have maintained it is social-apps. However they seem to have not succeeded in that space at all. They should have been the ones doing stuff like Federated identity/profiles/streams etc. They had a huge user-base to experiment on. They were in this space when FB was really small.. Now they have been reduced to simply pushing their activities to FB... Off couse, given the position they are in, this is better than doing nothing
- Bindu Reddy
Then again, in some ways it would be nice if something like OpenID was really universal. Having said that, there's a danger in having one master key for everything.
- Ian May
I'll simply note that, just because we're allowing Facebook Connect, dies not mean we're only using it.
- Mistletoe Glen
from iPhone
Internet tech company != social networking site - enabling users to megaphone their activities to Facebook is a strategically beneficial move. Yahoo! is also one step ahead of Microsoft and their cluster mess of a MSN ID (or whatever it's called). Also, remember that Facebook is a more focused niche, where as Yahoo! is a gigantic entity with a breadth of properties.
- Mona Nomura
Agree they are definitely ahead of MSFT on this front..
- Bindu Reddy
On top of that, Maxamad, Yahoo! Mail is, IMHO, the best Webmail interface available today
- Curtiss Grymala
Yahoo lost not because they did not have good products, but rather they had too many products. And now they plain wonder what to keep. It seems it would only be yahoo.com, mail and flickr. Its sad to see Pipes not catching up though. It is still a good product!
- Amit
Their developer tools are indispensable as well. YUI is very useful for webdev. YQL is very cool as well. There's also the bias against Y! products from so-called geeks online as well
- Itachi
It's different strokes for different folks though. I personally don't like Yahoo Mail. I don't find the spam control very effective either. I didn't like Gmail when I switched from Outlook five years ago, but I would NEVER go back to using Outlook now.
- Ian May
I just wish those repeating Hulu ads would STOP. It's you! No, it's an ad! And YOU, YaHOO, have ditched the charming hillbilly. I feel bad for him.
- Richard pancakhaus Walker
I haven't fired up Hulu in the longest time here. I think my wife might do soon though, as we're looking at ditching cable TV. I watch almost no TV, and my wife only some. Our roomies tell us they can no longer afford half the cable bill each month, so it's gonna go Internet only, saving a small fortune.
- Ian May
I meant facebook connect will let you login into yahoo mail.

Can I get all my data out of Facebook yet?
- EricaJoy
Ok that was just odd. I nodded off for a moment - all the sudden I'm trying to switch directions on the Paris metro. Very high-tech station with the longer distance trains intermixed. High-tech escalator that presents a slippery metal surface until it forms into stairs. Family with disabilities negotiating it right in front of me. I - http://mic-ro.com/metro...
Yeah, but he's been there before...They were referring to Titanic the same way

How much of the movie have you seen? I caught a big bunch of it at Adobe MAX and I think it looks to be the best movie of the year.
- Luke Kilpatrick
So you think it will be better than Up or The Blind Side or Inglourious Basterds?
- Alex Scoble
from IM
Personally, I've been using the Waterworld comparison, but Mr Cameron is well entrenched in many august fields these days. I'm sure he'll do well. The picture looks different than I'd hoped, and I'm simply dubious. I'm not a good mainstream guesser, I just make art.

not a response to the guy directly above me, a response to the post in general...
- Kamilah Gill
The Abyss is his best movie. At least to me, and in terms of making a real narrative feature film.
- Derrick
It doesn't look like what I expected either, but I'm still hopeful. I really like the concept of the movie, but all the clips I've seen kinda look like video game intro CGI. Granted it looks great, but I was expecting something revolutionary.
- Adrian
I'm not sure what your response is supposed to mean though...are you disagreeing that he is in fact doing a live/CGI action remake of Fern Gully? Because that's exactly what Avatar is.
- Alex Scoble
from IM
Ooh, I've only seen the Abyss once. I think it's high time to watch again sometime soon.
- Adrian
Yeah, that was pointed towards Kamilah. And Fern Gully is about a guy who's hired to rape and pillage a pristine landscape for its resources, but falls in love with one of the locals and realizes the harm he's doing...which is what Avatar is also about.
- Alex Scoble
+Adrian. That's pretty close to my take from what I've seen, too. Alex: I've not seen Fern Gully, so I don't really have a thought on that, but most films are remakes of something mixed around (or not) anyway. Blah. High-concept sci-fi can't be groundbreaking and popular at the same time, apparently.
- ɐ ɯıʞ sıɹɥɔ
from iPhone
ok, so now I get it. I thought you meant there would be another movie coming up that was a remake of Fern Gully. I didn't make the connection.
- Kamilah Gill
Ahh, hehe, that makes sense. Sorry it wasn't more clear.
- Alex Scoble
from IM
Yeah, James Cameron and Mary Mastrantonio aren't on speaking terms because of that scene
- Alex Scoble
from IM
i remember that's covered in a sort of mealy-mouthed way in one of the documentaries on the multi-disc set i have. she was very not happy about how they did the resuscitation scene.
- Joe Silence is not Santa
You guys are making me want to see what you're talking about. In brief, what happened in those Abyss scenes?
- Kamilah Gill
also, the safety diver putting Ed Harris' scuba mouthpiece in upside down and nearly killing him probly added to the unhappiness in that production.
- Joe Silence is not Santa
@Kamilah: it's really best if you watch it yourself. be sure to get the director's cut with the 20 minutes added back in that the studio chopped for distribution, cos it makes the film MUCH better.
- Joe Silence is not Santa
most of this revolves around a scene where the mini-sub Harris and Mastrantonio is dead in the water and leaking quickly and there's only one scuba tank. Mastrantonio convinces Harris' character that he is the stronger swimmer and she should drown so he can drag her body back to the underwater base and revive her there.
- Joe Silence is not Santa
I'm confused. Fern Gully == Kids' movie. Just because they share some plot, they're the same?
- Rahsheen ™, Coach Rah
OK thanks for the summary. I wasn't sure when, if ever, I'd get around to seeing that particular movie. Soooo many movies on the list to see. For example, I haven't even seen Karate Kid yet. I just saw Back to the Future for the first time earlier this year. I'm way behind.
