So, with the ability to share files here, how the dynamics of this group can be improved? Will we send an email with the PDF requested or should we share the file here? Will this incur in some copyright violation? Comments, opinions ...
Excellent link, D0r0th34 :) - Graham Steel
Brill. Utterly unrelated to this thread or anything else in this room, this has just gone live on FF:- http://blog.friendfeed.com/2009... - Graham Steel
I wouldn't say that it will become a repository, we don't know for how long they will keep the files and entries - pn
You can now share files on FriendFeed Posted by Dan Hsiao on Wednesday, June 24, 2009 One of my favorite things about FriendFeed is how quick and easy it is to upload and post a photo. Now, we’ve added the capability to share files as well. You can easily attach any file, such as a PDF or a spreadsheet, to your FriendFeed post. - Graham Steel
Much broader discussion is now here:- http://friendfeed.com/nuin... - Graham Steel
I'll send the files I have access to to the room and we'll see what happens. I may have to create an anonymous account, though. Or even better: a "Paper Delivery" account to which we all have access and can use to send papers. How about that? - Björn Brembs
I prefer to do this openly. If I'm asked to stop by legitimate copyright holders, I'll consider it -- unlikely that I have the resources for a legal battle so I'll probably comply. Between the terrible PR repercussions and the fact that legal opinion is (to put it mildly) divided over whether p2p access sharing of research mss exceeds Fair Use, I don't expect to be hassled unless the room gets much bigger and our procedures become much more efficient. - Bill Hooker
'I prefer to do this openly'. I'm with that and the rest that Bill says 1000%. - Graham Steel
Further, I think it would be much easier to argue that a web-shared pdf breached Fair Use, since any number of people can download it for any undisclosed purpose, than a single copy emailed directly to a colleague for research/teaching purposes. The direct peer-to-peer nature of the system we have, slightly clumsy though it is, probably affords us considerable legal protection. Personally I don't think it would be a good idea to use the new filesharing capability for the Refs Wanted room. - Bill Hooker
Ok, Bill, now you got me completely confused. First you say you'd share the file in the room with your own name, then you say it wouldn't be such a good idea. Now which is it? :-) - Björn Brembs
I'm with Bill and D0r0th34 ! - Graham Steel
Sorry, I wasn't clear, Bjoern -- in my first comment, by "openly" I just meant "not using an anonymous account", and I was thinking of email OR fileshare. Then I realised the extra implications of fileshare or shared accounts, and added my second comment. - Bill Hooker
