God as a Drug: The Rise of American Megachurches ScienceDaily (Aug. 19, 2012) — American megachurches use stagecraft, sensory pageantry, charismatic leadership and an upbeat, unchallenging vision of Christianity to provide their congregants with a powerful emotional religious experience, according to research from the University of Washington. "Membership in megachurches is one of the leading ways American Christians worship these days, so, therefore, these churches should be understood," said James Wellman, associate professor of American religion at the University of Washington. "Our study shows that -- contrary to public opinion that tends to pass off the megachurch movement as consumerist religion -- megachurches are doing a pretty effective job for their members. In fact, megachurch members speak eloquently of their spiritual growth." Wellman and co-authors Katie E. Corcoran and Kate Stockly-Meyerdirk, University of Washington graduate students in sociology and comparative...

Megachurches, or churches with 2,000 or more congregants, have grown in number, size, and popularity in recent years, coming to virtually dominate the American religious landscape. More than half of all American churchgoers now attend the largest 10 percent of churches. Megachurch services feature a come-as-you-are atmosphere, rock music, and what Wellman calls a "multisensory mélange"...

Fave part: Face Part: "Limp-wristed homosexuals who are atheists often have great difficulty throwing spirals." Tebow beign such an incredible loser disproves that theory.

" ScienceDaily (Sep. 14, 2011) — Researchers at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine with help from an amateur fossil hunter in College Park, Md., have described the fossil of an armored dinosaur hatchling. It is the youngest nodosaur ever discovered, and a founder of a new genus and species that lived approximately 110 million years ago during the Early Cretaceous Era. Nodosaurs have been found in diverse locations worldwide, but they've rarely been found in the United States. The findings are published in the September 9 issue of the Journal of Paleontology..

lol That's one helluva intricate bumper sticker, you probably get more readers if you just detail the mind-maps on the side of your car :) On that note, yes it's fairly, imprecise in its precision but these graphs are just a distillation of Wellington's elaborated on arguments. In depth however, he explains very convincingly how when it's faith/religion/tradition vs the scientific method of improvement, Science wins out.

Akiva -- what is the distribution of great Jewish scientists among ultra-Orthodox, Orthodox, Conservative, Reform, Reconstructionist and secular Jews? And wasn't Jewish scientific genius unlocked by the Aufklärung (Enlightenment)?
- Sean McBride
Sean, once again, you ask a question already knowing the answer. Most Jewish scientists are Reform or are unreligious entirely but that doesn't stop them from being Jewish. Genetics are genetics even when you cast religion aside. Wasn't it Einstein who said that Buddhism is the only religion truly compatible with science?
- Akiva
Akiva -- not only are these Reform, secular and irreligious Jews who excel in science Jewish, but I would argue that they represent the very best of the Jewish tradition. They are quintessentially Jewish in their rigorous and vigorous questioning of everything, in their arduous wrestling with "God" -- that is, with reality. And to a considerable degree, Orthodox and Talmudic religious traditions have helped to nourish and cultivate this intellectual excellence.
