It is my impression that people have stopped caring about using social media to create new online communities but are instead using them to strengthen the ties that bound them to their physical-offline communities. Thus the use of maps, organizing walks with the help of GPS, geotagging, face tagging, etc.
This does not mean that online communities are dead. Although social media and networks are also being used to reinforce the role of existing online communities, their main use by groups of people is increasingly for the organization of events, location and georeferencing. But then again, I may be wrong and all that I'm saying is bulls**t :) - Miguel Caetano
