Haggis (Sean Loyless)
The Hotties of FriendFeed (My FF Crushes)
hotties-of-FF.jpg
By no means a complete list. :D - Haggis (Sean Loyless)
SCREW YOU HAGGIS... I wax me legs, I spend hours in the hairdressers and weeks doing my makeup for you... YOU BASTARD... I HATE YOU... *runs off sobbing* - Johnny Worthington
Oh I have you in another list Johnny: Crossdressing Australians of FF. - Haggis (Sean Loyless)
Well hey thanks! - Brandy Lea
Did I say I wear a dress? Oh wait, yeah I have in the 25 Things - Johnny Worthington
*grabs popcorn* - Josh Haley
Well I saw the Bra, so I only guessed at the rest of the ensemble. - Haggis (Sean Loyless)
... one needs support for one man-tits or one will get a sore back... HEY! EYES UP HERE BUDDY! - Johnny Worthington
You certainly grabbed many of them - RAPatton
I should have been there. - Nation Hahn
lol - Cee Bee
Aww, I hope I'm not offending anyone by not including them on the list. Many times I just go by the avatar and if it's a cartoon or something it's hard to tell and I won't put on here, and also these are just *my* personal tastes. Everyone has different types! - Haggis (Sean Loyless)
Any woman with the brass to be on FF is a hottie in my book. - Chris Baskind
Wow - that'd be a drag to be on a list like that. Still, as I always say, if you want to get a lot of followers get a hot chick avatar. It's sad but it's iJustine. True! I mean true. It's sad but it's true. - Ciaoenrico
++ Chris! - Haggis (Sean Loyless)
Lindsay and Sarah I will agree with however I will not like this cause there is no MONA! - Shawn aka ringking
Sean, how could you miss Dee: http://friendfeed.com/holycool ;-) - Kol Tregaskes
What are you talking about? She's the last one on the fifth row. :D - Haggis (Sean Loyless)
bow chick wow wow! - Morgan Haley
@Kol, She's got a Simpsons avatar, and I don't see any pics in her feed? - Haggis (Sean Loyless)
They forgot me....can you do a redo? - @CrystalinaB
Honorable mention? (and I added you to my list) - Haggis (Sean Loyless)
Yay! I'm married to a hottie! - Chrimmus Tad
Whew, I'm glad I'm not on that list. - Christian (Simply X)
Sean, what the hell is my sister doing on this list!?! - jamar78
!!! Who is your sister Joel? I didn't even know! *hides* - Haggis (Sean Loyless)
http://friendfeed.com/teologia AKA Cardeen Martinez - jamar78
hahahahahahaha - what about the boys??!! - ♥ Stephiepooos ♥
yeeha! Chris Baskind GREAT answer! - @CrystalinaB
All I know is that when the boy's list comes out I better be on that or all hell is going to break loose!!! - jamar78
Happy to see everyone there, a few in particular ;) - Timothy Griffin
I'd hide it too, if my sense of fairness didn't kick in...So these are just women? Where are the MALE hotties of FF. :p ;) - Helen Sventitsky
The picture is too small to see. Am I on it? - Martha
@Helen Start up the Male Hotties list yourself! I find men hairy and repulsive. :D - Haggis (Sean Loyless)
LOL MARTHA!! - Mona Nomura
I wonder... Would I be on the male hotties list? :p - Chris, Taskerrific Guy
hahahaha.... when's the calendar coming out? - Thomas Hawk
@Thomas hahahaha - Shevonne
Ciaoenrico I kinda take offense to that. My avatar is me, it's my face and I shared it on FF after a LOT of thought about it (plus some gender confusion, but that's another story). Because a woman might be considered attractive she *shouldn't* user her face as an avatar otherwise she's just trying to get followers? Bull crap, and sexist to boot. - FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
@Tina +++++ - Shevonne
@Sean, I couldn't agree more. :D Tina, YAY! - Helen Sventitsky
Agreed, Tina. That certainly wasn't the point of this list - it was merely a way to point out all of my FF crushes at once. I hope no one takes offense to it. :( - Haggis (Sean Loyless)
I'm offended....I wasn't on this effing list!! - jamar78
Sean, I'm not offended, personally. I find it rather amusing. The title of this post, to me, however, seemed rather "definitive". YMMV. :D - Helen Sventitsky
I mean my sis' made list sheesh!! - jamar78
I think I'm due for a new picture. I've used the same one since joining. - Rochelle
Rochelle, you had that other one, the B&W one of you smiling. That was great, too - Josh Haley
Quite a collection. There should be a male list too but then that could lead to a match-making game and apps being developed and other memes ... and ... oh dear ... - Amani
I'm not a crush, eh? :P - Tamar Weinberg
@Amani is that what you wanted to talk to me about? Creating that app? haha - Shevonne
We totally need a boys list, totally. And I'll pretend I'm not crying in a corner over here. - Bec Rowe @d0tski
I don't know how I feel about this... - Derrick
Dammit.. I'm about to delete this post. It was not my intention to hurt anyone's feelings. :( - Haggis (Sean Loyless)
I don't think it's a problem pointing out your crushes, hun. I think it's the fact that it's titled "The Hotties of FriendFeed" that can make people kind of uncomfy. That comes across as a direct judgment of peoples' looks, even though we know you didn't mean it that way. - tinypants - Hagitha of FF
@Sean don't ever apologize for your actions. - Shevonne
Okay, I think I understand.. Thanks Amanda.. I just updated the title, hopefully it will let everyone know that this is my own personal list, and by no means a judgement of anyone. - Haggis (Sean Loyless)
It's not my scene, but hey...whatevs. It just feels a little meat market-ish to me. People aren't avatars, and I know a couple on the list who wouldn't be proud of being reduced to a FF hottie on someone's list. - Derrick
This whole thing spun out of control rapidly. Impressive. - Mike Nayyar
Okay, I hope this is better: http://friendfeed.com/e... - Haggis (Sean Loyless)
Derrick - But a lot of the stuff you post to the really gay room is pretty meat market-ish. Just because they're professional models it's okay to objectify them? We naturally objectify each other because we naturally are sexual creatures. I'm not offended by being on this list, but I don't like being objectified and I think what Haggis has done is a sweet gesture, not a gesture of blind testosterone rubbing one out. - Mattie Kenny
Didn't anyone see me grab the popcorn earlier? That's your 1st clue. - Josh Haley
I'm not offended at all btw :) - Tamar Weinberg
Thx Matsie <3 - Haggis (Sean Loyless)
LOL - Pedram
Sean you created a monster didn't you....hehe - jamar78
Ugh.. no kidding.. I guarantee this list will never be mentioned again outside of these posts. I think i'm gonna unplug for a while and let this all die down. - Haggis (Sean Loyless)
ok i just now read the whole thread damnit i always miss everything lol joel... ::shakes head:: u kno to some i'm not a lil sister lol ur so funny i luv u! - Cardeen Martinez
don't let it get to you Sean....all that matters is that you had no malicious intent which you didn't - jamar78
**blushes** - gee thanks. :) And go hide for a while, Sean... it'll all blow over. - Jen (SquirrelGirl)
nice list, i have about half of these in a group called "sexy people" - sean percival
Mattie, any pics I post in the Really Gay Room are A) *in* the Really Gay Room, and B) pictures culled from sites that are meat-marketish to begin with. I would never post pics of Scoble or Louis Gray and say, "oh these are guys I'd like to see naked". And I'm not knocking Sean. I freakin' love Sean. But I also know that there are women on the list who've worked hard at getting to where they are in life and in their careers and to be thought of as a pin-up on FF isn't their bag. - Derrick
It's about time you chimed in Leather...LMAO...love it...haha - jamar78
Leather Donut, Don't ever change! :) - Michelle Martinez
I second her notion...hehe - jamar78
I don't see how posting this in a room would make it any different a situation, Derrick. I don't think that Sean ever said he wanted to see any of the women on the list naked. Is that something I skipped over while scanning the comments? If he said that, then yes. This list is pretty lame. But being admired for your beauty isn't bad. Especially since (for me at least) being a hottie entails being incredibly intelligent and engaging. - Mattie Kenny
Mattie, that's exactly what I consider a hottie. Attractiveness is only part of the factor. Intelligence, a sense of humor, and many other things go into that equation. - Haggis (Sean Loyless)
I see a potential calendar. - Paul
Mattie, I'm not going to fight with you over this. If you want to split ends, say I'm a hypocrite, or engage in double standards, feel free. I don't care. Very simply, I know people who don't want to be referred to as hotties. By anyone. I see them on the list. I speak up. That's it. There are 50 people in the RGR, maybe 20 people see it regularly. That's a HUGE difference than the numbers of people who sub to the home feed. But you know what? Forget I even opened my mouth. Apparently I've become a prude... - Derrick
That's not what I'm saying, Derrick. Now I understand what you meant by putting the photos up in the RGR versus what Haggis did. Did these women speak up for themselves and say they don't appreciate being called attractive? - Mattie Kenny
<3 Derrick.. I appreciate what you are saying, and think it's very commendable that you are seeing this from an angle I didn't really see. I know you only have the best intentions with what you are saying. Please no more fighting over this.. - Haggis (Sean Loyless)
I just happen to know them, Mattie. And I didn't say they didn't appreciate being called attractive. I said they, knowing them as I do, woudn't appreciate being culled up on a list and pointed out for the world to ogle. - Derrick
Sean, you know how I feel about you bud, and I'm not putting you on blast. Consider my hands washed of it. - Derrick
Mattie, how about you look at it from the flip side...those women who DIDN'T make the list and don't have the benefit of feeling all bubbly inside because they've been deemed "attractive"? It's all well and good when you're on the winning team, apparently. - tinypants - Hagitha of FF
yeah Sean you are a good person....don't beat yourself up about it - jamar78
Although you better take my sis' out this damn list!! hehe - jamar78
Awesome post, Sean! - George The Writer
Amanda - I don't think not being on the list deems you unattractive and I don't think Haggis is the be all end all of who is or is not attractive. Wow. I'm on the list. BFD. I don't feel or bubbly inside, nor did I take it very seriously. It didn't blip in my radar until I saw people taking major offense to Haggis having posted the list, in which case I looked at it & was surprised to see myself there. I'm not on any "team". - Mattie Kenny
Haggis, I love the conversations you spawn... feel free to include me in future provocative topics. ~xxxooo~ - Far
I would like to state for the record, should there be a men's list...I would like to opt out. That is all, thank you. - Christian (Simply X)
Ok gents, let's show the ladies how we roll. (and can someone email me that info ahead of time, so I look like I know what I'm doing?) - Morgan Haley
Oh too funny. Thanks for including me, Sean. ;-) - Jennifer Leggio
And the winner for best line from this entire thread..."The picture is too small to see. Am I on it?"...@Martha. thank YOU! I am now cleaning cola off of my keyboard. - .LAG liked that
How did you manage to limit yourself to only 53? - j1m
Ok my cat is really pist off...didn't make the cut...gees! LOL - Susan Beebe
Aaaw, Sean! <3 - Nia
This list is approved, mainly because one certain hottie is the better half :) Sean, not only do you represent a great product, but also exceptional taste. Sir, I owe you a drink! ;) - Matt Harwood
I'm amazed that neither Lisa Bettany nor Sarah Lacy are showing up in any of these clique building seminar visual aides. - Matthew DeVries
Ok I am not the brightest crayon in the box so I want to know how the hell do you see a list of people like that. I have different lists but where do I go to see all in just that one list? - Brandy Lea
Brandy, you see this view when you go into one of your lists then select to Add/Remove friends. - Kol Tregaskes
I think what Brandy is asking is if she can see someone else's list, which we can't. Haggis might have made a list that is friendfeed.com/list/hotties and he'll see it when he's logged in, but no one else would see it if they went to that same URL. He wouldn't even see it if he logged out and went to that URL. - FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
Saw this comin'. Nice job Sean :) - Charlie Anzman
Hey, what am I doing there??? I just saw it now :| - Bibi
Booyah! - Josh Haley
LOL Josh. I was waiting for someone to do this. :D - Haggis (Sean Loyless)
Don't you miss the way the groups used to display pictures like this? I wish they'd bring this functionality back - Haggis (Sean Loyless)
Glad I didn't make the list lol - Jeunelle Foster
I don't think I was subscribed to you when I made this list, Jeunelle. This is almost a year old! :D - Haggis (Sean Loyless)
Don't misunderstand what I mean. I mean I am thankful I didn't make the list period. PRAISE THE LORD :) - Jeunelle Foster
We should have an Academy Award of FriendFeed or something. That I would have a long ass speech prepared telling everybody how I'd like to thank all the little people who were responsible for me winning that award and it should be sponsored by Mashable and FFundercats :) - Jeunelle Foster
How the FF did I miss this thread? Jan 27th??? Thank you! That's a huge compliment. And since it's so old, it's a fun time capsule too. - Ginger Makela Riker

heart broken i didnt make this list - sean percival

What's your REAL problem hiding under other issues? - CNN.com
"(OPRAH.com) -- Tricia was depressed. That was her only problem. Although her life had all the right ingredients -- successful husband, decent job, close-knit family -- Tricia felt so low that she sometimes threatened suicide. Sometimes it's easier to obsess over "designated issues" instead of solving the real problem. When her therapist invited her husband, parents, and sister for a family session, a discussion of Tricia's "spells" devolved into a verbal brawl. Her parents, who'd been drinking, bickered about their mutual infidelity. Her sister wept like a fire hydrant. Tricia's husband shouted that they were ruining his life. In short, Tricia's depression was not her only problem. Instead, it was what I call her designated issue. Tricia herself would be recognized by systems therapists as a "designated patient," the one person in a family or group who's singled out as sick or abnormal, allowing everyone else to feel healthy by comparison. A designated patient "carries" the group's... more... - Helen Sventitsky from Bookmarklet

"Remember the days when the word Google was not interchangeable with internet? Or when every site seemed to have a Netscape icon on it? Or when Flash was still something you cleaned your floor with? Then you were clearly using the web in the mid to late 1990s when pages were rudimentary affairs containing lists of links and information. If you want to import your Facebook status, you must have "Allow friends to subscribe to my status" checked on the "Status Updates" custom privacy setting at http://www.facebook.com/login.... This is the default, but a few people have customized it away.
Picture 78.png
Picture 79.png
Will "my network and friends" work too? - JA Castillo
I think that's fine JA. They key is to have the "Allow friends to subscribe to my status" checkbox checked (the one right above the red bar in the second screenshot). That dialog appears when you select "Customize..." from the "Status Updates" pulldown on the first screenshot. - Paul Buchheit
Wow, that totally fixed my issue. Thanks, Paul (and FriendFeed)! - Mark Trapp
Thanks! - georgeker
Thank you. - Guillermo Esteves
Thank you ! - Joan Dossetto
Awesome! Thanks for the tip. - Reuben Thum
Sorry - this doesn't work. I have that box checked. Unimpressed. - Mathew
Matthew, Facebook has been through at least one major redesign since this entry was posted on 21st October. Anyone help Matthew in getting his FB imported in FF? - Kol Tregaskes
Kol is correct, Facebook has changed their interface since these instructions were posted. Unfortunately, they seem to have eliminated the "Status Updates" RSS feed entirely. If you can find it, let me know. - Paul Buchheit
The feed itself can't be gone - people who added it to FriendFeed before Facebook's UI changed are still having updates pulled in here. But as far as finding it now to add it...I've been unsuccessful. And modifying the URL of a working feed doesn't seem to work, either. - Jandy, ConcertMaven of FF
Yes, the RSS feeds still exist at some level, but the UI for discovering their secret urls seems to have been removed. - Paul Buchheit
I'd love to know what the FFers think about all the changes that Facebook seems to be doing lately. - Eric Florenzano
btw - what i want to do is get my "wall" feed into FF. can't seem to get that, either. - MikeAmundsen
alas, seems like the Facebook people continue to want it to be a walled garden. - holly
I spent like half an hour last week trying to find my custom feed URL so I could import FB status into FriendFeed. No luck. =( - Darren
Looks like FB is kind of blocking FF. Kind of showing teeth =) - Durukan Duru
@Paul: do you anticipate Fb's announce this coming week about third-parties will give FF a chance to improve FF-Fb integration at all? - MikeAmundsen
Yeah, mine was already enabled so it doesn't help me. Thanks for the idea though. - Brad
Wondered how to do this when adding all my services. Thanks for the explanantion :) - Charlotte M
I was able to find my FB status feed recently (but can't any longer), so FB must have recently tinkered with this. - Kevin Whalen

FB is making all this hoopla recently just because they finally "opened" up to 3rd party apps, and they take away the rss feed to our status updates. - Kevin Whalen from email
so how do we get facebook updates to friendfeed? - Noel Nuguid
Would like to know how to enable status, too! - Andreas Stolze
so, FB buys FF, I think status feeds will be back soon - Hakan İyice
@Hakan Agreed, they should be back soon, hopefully with the option to "CC Facebook" like you can with Twitter. - Nathan Snyder
For now this does not work at all. Let's hope, now that 'status' of pages can be synched with Twitter, that what used to funcntion will resume activity again. - lelapin
@mamund Thanks for the link, but it didn't really help me. You wouldn't think it would be that hard to reenable this feed. - Nathan Snyder from IM

I left Twitter for Jaiku. Then Jaiku left me for Google. I moved in with Pownce but it died. I went back to Twitter, but flirted with Plurk, Identica, and Rejaw, and even tried doing it myself with Laconica but it was Twitter I really loved. Twitter finally broke my heart so I left it for Friendfeed. Now Friendfeed is leaving me for Facebook. No...

I think Leo's audience is more likely to click "Like" or "comment" than Scoble's is. When Leo and Rob are both posting on FF, Leo gets more likes and comments - Mark
Didn't you leave a post earlier saying how funny it was that people complain anytime there's a change (referring to the FF buyout)? This sounds like a complaint to me. - Fleagle
Not complaining - just thinking about the future. I think a little Friendfeed DNA will vastly improve Facebook. And I think Facebook is already the big winner with the general populace. I also think we geeks need a corner somewhere else to hang out in. - Leo Laporte
And I have no plans to leave Friendfeed. Yet. - Leo Laporte

You all just have ants in your pants :) - Jeunelle Foster
Leo, u by your self made two companies (services) out of 3 famous and made Google interested enough to buy 2 of them (Jaiku & FF). Google also tried to flirt with Twitter as well. So which one u choose now? Cause we will follow u :P - Sam Ehsan
Sounds like some of my past love affairs. Of course, I'm married now. That, um, was prior. - Paul Chaney

Speaking of Days Of Our Lives: Didn't that show jump the shark when the serial killer was unmasked as Marlena (a character I used to have a mad crush on, and who's now mostly a professional victim)? Why do we all assume this is a bad thing? Maybe the FF Facebook combo will be better?? - Craig Shipp
Maybe they'll keep both open -- FF is the open side, and FB is the closed side. - John Flinchbaugh from IM
Social Networks are sluts? - TheDiva Rockin
It sure is. - Jason Hill
I know exactly how you feel. What's a person to do? I am mad at Twitter for suspending some of my accounts. Gotta find one who is a lady in public and a whore in the bedroom. One who looks like a woman, but thinks like a man. One who tells you you're the only person in their world and worships the ground you walk on. One who's from Venus but want's to live on Mars. One who you know will always be there even when the chips are down. One who looks like a movie star, but doesn't bust the credit... more... - Jan Simmonds
I think a lot of people LOVE to think negatively and don't want to think positively. They think FB is BAD and will ruin FF, but I think if they do it well, FB won't be the bad guy. I think most people who are irked about this are irked because they think the FFers "sold out" to the "man". - Molly, "sorry"
@Mollyanna - I disagree. I am irked because the future of FF is completely uncertain. It's more likely that FB will let FF flounder and close it down than it is that FB will invest time and resources in maintaining and enhancing FF. FB has other interests and is splitting up the FF dev team. That does not bode well for FF. I don't begrudge the FF devs for taking the money. I would be... more... - Fa La La La Lindsay

Why Dictators Love Kitsch
"The very day the Bill Clinton-Kim Jong Il photo appeared, Vladimir Putin’s office released photographs of the Russian prime minister on vacation that are nothing if not totalitarian kitsch. One shows him bare-chested on horseback, another swimming butterfly in a river. “Putin’s action-man holiday album,” was the BBC’s snarky headline, and they were right. All political leaders try to project an image of vitality and vigor, but these photos went farther in their attempt to portray Mr. Putin as somehow superhuman. As such, they are of a piece with the propagandistic purposes of totalitarian kitsch in which the leader is turned into a larger-than-life icon." - Carolyn Chan from Bookmarklet

The Mysterious Math of Cities » INFRASTRUCTURIST
"The mathematics of cities was launched in 1949 when George Zipf, a linguist working at Harvard, reported a striking regularity in the size distribution of cities. He noticed that if you tabulate the biggest cities in a given country and rank them according to their populations, the largest city is always about twice as big as the second largest, and three times as big as the third largest, and so on. In other words, the population of a city is, to a good approximation, inversely proportional to its rank. Why this should be true, no one knows. Keep in mind that this pattern emerged on its own. No city planner imposed it, and no citizens conspired to make it happen. Something is enforcing this invisible law, but we’re still in the dark about what that something might be." - Steven Perez from Bookmarklet
Whoa! ( http://www.citypopulation.de/Canada-... , http://www.infoplease.com/ipa... / http://www.citypopulation.de/USA-Met... , http://www.citypopulation.de/Poland-... - breaks down with #3, but still, http://www.citypopulation.de/Spain-C... ) - So just eyeballing four countries, the last two of which I picked arbitrarily, the #1:#2 ratio is pretty solid. I think from #3 onwards, it's a bunch shakier, but still. - Andrew C
"The same pattern holds for other measures of infrastructure. Whether you measure miles of roadway or length of electrical cables, you find that all of these also decrease, per person, as city size increases. And all show an exponent between 0.7 and 0.9." - I wonder if this is more an effect of density than population size. Larger cities are also denser cities. - Andrew C

i hope we will see accepting news & irc on lagre scale as soon as possible. all substitutions at the moment are so worse then originals... - marcell mars
Sorry but real time conservation was invented before I was made. - Burcu Dogan
Of course Burcu. Two people standing next to eachother talking is "real time", so real-time is very, very old. Now the web is becoming realtime because of improved technology and ubiquity. - Paul Buchheit
My real-time conversation with you, Burcu, a person I don't know, who I know via someone I only follow by virtue of the existence this place, is very new - Christopher Galtenberg
"Things are changing fast at FriendFeed. Buchheit says that the company believes aggregation to be less important than real time conversation.." + skins?!?... this is so wrong. it's picking up the worst things from myspace, facebook and aol worlds... what about analysis and real time statistics about social and content graph... friendfeed vision fails big time... - marcell mars
Real-time conversation about whatever's hot (or valuable and just found) on the internet -- that's a failure of vision? Come on - Christopher Galtenberg
And it's conversation among your network, in other words that graph is built into the conversation. Now it would be interesting if you could get some analytics out of it, but if there's an API that's easily done, a la tweetstats - Deepak Singh
Aggregation is the means to real-time web conversation. It's the how, not the why. - Christopher Galtenberg

Paul, I suppose you were implying to the different phases of web. It was static, the big old-minded boss makes me get only what he wants. Then that old man started to listen me, making web dynamic. And now it gets even more than that and letting me join him even in making strategic decisions. You call it "realtime". But, it's more likely to be a scalability issue, not an innovation. Dont you agree? - Burcu Dogan
A nice http://enjoysthin.gs (my baby) mention in that article. - Ted Roden
Also, assuming realtime is what's next, smarter, more automatic filtering is only seconds behind it. - Ted Roden

Marcell, that's the two points I picked up on this thread of the article: http://ff.im/2vvbh. - Kol Tregaskes
Yes it appears aggregation is less important and concentration is being put on the discussion aspect. Cool! So we don't need the service icons back. ;-) - Kol Tregaskes
Also the news of the themes coming soon is most welcome, so I'll plug this 'themes' group while I'm here: http://friendfeed.com/friendf.... I'll be able to remove the speech marks from around the word "theme" soon, hehe. - Kol Tregaskes
I fully agree. Real time is where it's at. - Drew Lucas
I was a little thrown off by the changes even though I had checked out the beta. But as someone who used to primarily read and like on friendfeed I've found the new format more conducive to posting which I've done a lot more since the switchover. - Mike Elliott
Paul is the man, but most of the time, most people won't be able to keep up with real time in my opinion _if_ that real time includes everyone's everything. Filtering and searching to let me get my realtime on topics I want, in an easy-to-digest way, easier than IRC and with ways to grab something out of the stream for pondering or commenting later. (IRC's not hard, but you have to admit it's rather geeky.) - Rick Cogley
If Gmail and Adsense only took a day, I don't know why Paul is taking so long with FF. - Thaths
I think you are right, but I´m not so sure friendfeed is the place? What can friendfeed offer that you can not find if you combine twitter and facebook? - Terje Sorgjerd
Realtime might be the next big thing because it's an unaddressed niche, but not because it's the most optimal way to communicate. In fact, asynchrony lets people take their time and contribute more substantial things, whereas real-time is exclusively chatty. It's going to be more talk, less links and less text overall. - Mr. Gunn
Is it going to be a set of preselected skins, ability to customize with CSS, or both? - Bruce Lewis
I would have rather seen him put his talent and smarts into designing a flying car. - Rex Hammock
flowing good. multi-person good. real-time NOT IMPORTANT. If I want multi-user chat, I'll use IRC or something. Real-time is useful for monitoring conferences or alerts. Please make FF about conversations around CONTENT, flowing at the *user's* pace around the world across timezones, not jittering every second. - Richard Akerman
real-time is the future. Chats = FF?? HA! Laughable. - vijay
I'm with Mr Gunn and Richard Akerman -- real-time is a waste of time. - Bill Hooker
Right, "realtime" is just going to increase the noise to signal ratio. It's hard to follow, not a suitable content type for most. FF, please dont try hard to sound visionary. - Burcu Dogan
You want an empty marketspace to conquer, here's your slogan: FriendFeed, leader in worldwide asynchronous conversations around content. Rich conversations, informed and engaged user base spending lots of time (maybe once a day, maybe throughout the day, according to their inclinations and schedule)... hmm, you don't suppose a popular site like that might attract advertisers who can put ads NEXT TO RELEVANT CONTENT, not having to fight to be seen for the two seconds a realtime item is at the top of a page? - Richard Akerman
yet Richard, your comment is sitting like a duck for nearly a minute so far. hmm... - vijay
I wish people would be more imaginative and open minded. *sigh* Such short-sighted thinking. - vijay
If you don't like real-time, pause it. There's a button on the right side of the green bar at the top of the feed, or you can hit "q". It'll stay paused until you resume it. Even if you log out. - Ken Sheppardson

I like some of the new FF features, the live view is not one of them. Why? I like the pause function to allow me to browse over my news feeds without getting them live dearranged while I am still not through. Second, I vote for customized and less noisy FF views, e.g. like http://tinyurl.com/cxzgpw , the user images do not add anything (just noise for me) and I have a wide-screen, and want to use it. - joergkurtwegner
I never tire of "new feature X adds nothing" comments. /facepalm - Daniel J. Pritchett
Starting to like FF more and more as a "front" end. Still need to jump on the "actual sites" sometimes, for maintenance, etc... - Stan Augustyniewicz
adding my 2cents re: substantial conversations on ff via this ff thread - http://friendfeed.com/glemak... - mike "glemak" dunn
@Paul - Let me put it differently. I am using FF, because it is since many years the first tool with the potential to reduce my information overload problem on my trusted friend network and news feeds. So, I have a certain reading style and I am *willingly to pay* for a customized view, e.g. as premium FF subscriber. For me the discussion with my friend networks is valuable, any fancy... more... - joergkurtwegner
What the scientists on Friendfeed http://friendfeed.com/the-lif... have noticed is that this new style for FF, even when paused, promotes more "what's your favorite color" kind of stuff rather than more thoughtful content. That's the way Paul is going, we understand. It's the vacuous, personality-driven posts that get the most attention anyways. However, we scientists are content-focused people so the value of the "I'm eating a banana" chat is lost on us. - Mr. Gunn
We're also quite aware of the populist sacrifices that are required to get a larger mindshare. Compare the readership of People magazine to the scientific journal Nature. It's still OK for the most part, because most scientists on FF don't follow the chatters, and because we're handy with userscripts and styles http://www.flickr.com/photos... but the days of people in the life scientists room saying science social networks are dead because friendfeed does everything we need have passed - Mr. Gunn
@ryo, he wasn't.. he was speaking for himself, and seems to have a solid foundation for his thoughts that i suspect most scientists would agree with. - simran from twhirl
btw, this "real time" stuff is overhyped... what's the "core difference" in ff's real time multi person conversatinos and a "group chat" (even ytalk did that like in 1993 :) ... its about the way you use it, and ff might "lead" to a revolution, but it ain't it itself... - simran from twhirl
Ryo, I can't figure out how you got from "the consensus of members of the Life Scientists Room(as filtered through my contacts) is that we preferred the old interface as it promoted more content-driven, thoughtful posts" to "science should be dull". More to the point, we tend to come down on the side of aggregation and not real-time chat, which is apparently where Mr. Buchheit thinks the money is. I don't think it's the first time many of us have found we liked that which is less popular. - Mr. Gunn
Aren't conversations already real-time? What does real-time really mean? - Daniel Brusilovsky
i think when referred to this way its the difference between asynchronous and synchronous communications daniel... - mike "glemak" dunn
Ryo - You don't quite understand the point that's being made. It's admittedly a speculative one, but one that I've heard quite a few people make in slightly different ways. Essentially, there are two modes of use for FF - as an aggregator of activity on other sites and as a twitter-like service. The latter of those is the direction friendfeed is moving in, at the expense of the... more... - Mr. Gunn
I suspect that many of the people who think RT is important live in the same timezone as people they communicate with. - Nick Lothian
Mr. Gunn: methods of using friendfeed are mixed together, in some ways conversation & liking is a form of social aggregation - Mike Chelen
as usual - open versus closed - RT versus nonRT - public versus private - commercial versus noncommercial - adds versus nonadds - customization versus noncustomization - ... - just allow both and take the statistics of who was right afterwards. At the end of the day I care about what I get, and I strongly believe in the three possible principles ... love it, change it, or leave it ;-) - joergkurtwegner
I've asked the question how would to improve the real-time and/or the static mode to make it more usable here if anyone is interested: http://ff.im/2ylTv. I'm personally happy with the real-time mode, I've not hit the pause button since the first day or two of the beta release. After a while I've got used to it. - Kol Tregaskes
I'm also happy that the service icons are gone. The first day I wasn't be changed my opinion over the first few days of using the beta without them and found it brought more discussion to entries from particular services that were virtually ignored before. - Kol Tregaskes
The design is certainly not to my taste but yes that is down to my taste. I prefer a combination of Lindsey's mockup and AJ's comment-highlighting userscript personally but let's see what options we are given when the themes/skins come in a few weeks. - Kol Tregaskes
If you want some more comments, you might find these interesting: http://ff.im/2ugmx (in response to the inquisitr article, which was very negative but Paul kindly replied to some queries - thank you, Paul). - Kol Tregaskes
But lastly I like to thank FF for the new UI, it's great and look forward to the new features. :-) - Kol Tregaskes

Excellent blog posting by Richard Akerman regarding real-time versus asynchronous conversation. Here's the friendfeed link http://friendfeed.com/scilib... and here's his blog link: http://scilib.typepad.com/science... - Steve Koch
I will agree that service icons and avatars may be up to a matter of taste, but the time zone issue remains a major hurdle, especially for people who don't live in the same time zone as their colleagues. - Mr. Gunn
I totally agree with Paul and I love friendfeed and it has great real time stream ;-) - Sakib Mahmud

Holy Moley Guacamole. It's time for the monthly Compete.com FriendFeed vs. Twitter Post. For the month of March Twitter knocked the cover of the ball with an eye popping 76.8% monthly growth rate. FriendFeed grew as well, but far less at 5.7%. I suspect that with the new FF beta though that FriendFeed may pick up some ground in April. thanks for the reminder Atul! :) - Thomas Hawk from Bookmarklet

Twitter is definitely hitting the mainstream. All the TV talk, the celebrities, etc. It's hard to go anywhere in mainstream culture today without hearing about it. I do thing next months growth rates will be interesting. I suspect that FF very well may have a higher growth rate than Twitter next month given the new beta. - Thomas Hawk
Not convinced about Friendfeed growth, but in my 15 minutes of current experience I like. You hit the nail on the head re Twitter media coverage, and I think that's why Twitter is going to keep growing for a while longer /outside the US/. Example: A few minutes Newsnight in the UK just linked up with a BBC Radio 5 radio show. The radio show has been taking comments via Twitter for tonight's cancer awareness special. In my UK based experience, Friendfeed is something you hear about via Leo Laporte... :-) - Andy Bold

Friendfeed is quite a time investment. It's there for the broader conversation, which is nice, unfortunately, I usually only have enough time for the shorter one...on twitter. - timedalkat from twhirl
I'm in the rinse cycle - Josh Haley
I spend the most time on FF on my iPhone, sitting in the bar at work supervising. When business is slow, I'm more active. - Robert Hafer
Robert, I think that because of conversations I had on FriendFeed, I might have a chance of "friending" you and others on Facebook. Oh, the irony. :) Still, if I can befriend only FF regulars on Facebook, it's not very useful. I could as well talk to them on FF. - Meryn Stol
The Facebook iPhone app isn't as easy to use IMO, when I'm at my desk it usually means I have bookkeeping to do and less time for social networks. - Robert Hafer
Actually higher this week than prior weeks. It's a week by week thing. - LPH™ and his dog P™
I feel like I'm living on Friendfeed lately. - Louis Simoneau
Mine is up again. I do have time for it. But in a way I'm a bit dissappointed about the amount of reactions people give on one another. If you're already a big name, people react (like I do now ;-)), but otherwise they stay quite. - Ton Zijp
Just the opposite. I leave Facebook open a lot so people can IM me but most conversations happen on FF. Friendfeed is becoming more and more integrated into my daily work flow. - Rick Bucich
My FF usage is also way down. I've been sleeping more. - MiniMage TKDteacher of FF
Same here. I'm doing less-internet oriented things, lately. - Helen Sventitsky
The weather outside is getting delightful, baseball season's about to start, it's good to get away from the computer, imho. - .LAG liked that
Facebook is for friends - tennis, book group; normal people - and family - friendfeed is for technology. - MaryB, BrandingBroadOfFF
"normal people" :) - Meryn Stol
For the most part FF is a waste of time. There are interesting stories and pics to discover though. - Jeremy Campbell from twhirl
More friends are talking with me through Facebook since the new Friendfeed-like front end was introduced - Pat Kitano
My only complaint so far about FF is that it's difficult to find friends who aren't solely interested in social media, startups, and interwebby-techiness. When I find someone on FF who actually posts about a VARIETY of topics rather than just the latest news on Twitter/FriendFeed/Facebook/etc, I'll usually subscribe to their feed outright. - Ryan Garns
@ryan: I find searching for rooms on other topics that interest me and then browsing through the members is a good way of finding people talking about things other than twitter etc. - Louis Simoneau
We're here, Ryan. Maybe we just don't make enough noise. ;) - Jack (a.k.a. Jeber)
My time on many things is down at the moment due to a mixture of work and some interesting side projects... - Andy Davies
me too... see same stories multiple times a day i login. It doesn't keep track of what I've read and what I haven't. - Sumit Chachra
I think everyone has reduced their FriendFeed activity recently. Although, that doesn't mean people have lost interest or love in FriendFeed for that matter. - Nicholas James
I guess I experienced this emotion 6 months ago. I was spending 4 hrs or more per day on FF and without me even knowing that stopped happening. Because a lot of value of FF was overlapping with google reader, blogs, twitter, FB etc. I just went back to splitting my time between those services. It seems like to me that humans want separate spaces to experience / participate in fundamentally different things. Hence there is not much "natural or un-conscious" value of bringing every thing at one place.. - sameer guglani
Just to followup - I have also stopped going to FF after the new re-design. They seem to loosing identity - sameer guglani
Great conversation here. I've been a FF user a while however; I've only recently been using more and more. FB got to a point of annoyance for me with all the stuff people send you. I'm finding more engaged conversation here on FF and Twitter yet, FF is much easier to track conversation thread. True it is more difficult to find people on FF but, I think I will reach out to everyone on this thread but, it would be nice to have the capability to create "interest tags" & FF recommend people. - Jason Cronkhite
I personally would love one place to manage conversations in multiple web spaces/communities. - Jason Cronkhite
Ryan there are lots of people who don't just talk tech. If I wasn't so lazy I would look up all their usernames ... Rahsheen, Akiva, Rochelle, Tad, Lindsay, Lindsey, Mona, Alex Scoble - pretty much everyone who is into the ffundercats: Johnny Worthington, Josh Haley, Mark Wilson ... - Laura Norvig
I spend a lot more time than I used to on friendfeed, I find the community here is still more active. It's also more advanced. It's what I would like Jaiku to have become. - Richard A.
Same here - 2009 has been a crazy, busy year for me - much less time on the interwebs - Susan Beebe
yeah, been busy with that thing called real life - Dobromir Hadzhiev
Yeah, me too, you can kinda tell when I am not working full-time if usage spikes up :-) - mandyvan
Me too. Switch laptops, work had me running ragged. Nothing setup on lappy. And when I said work ran me (us - team operation) we drove about 20,000 miles this month. - Robert Couture
Friendfeed needs to begin working on recommendative filtering. Interestingness is only the first step (best of day etc). The work that the folks at flexpore are doing with the Flickr API is what I'd be looking at. What/who you like/comment and how can they analyze who likes/comment on similar items and how they can better filter their simple interestingness/best of day algorithm better for you personally. Enough content is here now. It's all about better finding it next -- well, that and search. - Thomas Hawk
Thomas - good idea :) - Susan Beebe
on FF is very difficult have a discussion if u are "unknown" (or not a blogger)... so i prefer twitter.. it's much more simple, faster and easyir have INTERACTION!! :) - albybisy
Defining the right set of friends on FriendFeed is a great way to filter news. Thus, my FriendFeed time is time well spent. Saves me time actually. - Mike Reynolds
I go in spikes. I think I'm fading a little, then I go on an FF bender for a night. - Kamilah Gill
My time on FriendFeed is still robust, but more focused. I spend a lot more time on my professionally-oriented List ("Enterprise 2.0"). So often I'll miss the memes that happen during the day. The funny thing is that those e2.0 folks don't spend a lot of time interacting here, so it can be a bit one-sided. But as a tracking tool, I'm getting more value than ever from FriendFeed. - Hutch Carpenter
I spend most of my time on Twitter nowadays. But I attribute that to the usefulness of TweetDeck. - Winston Teo
Like a pendulum, I change between FF and twitter , increasing the last one by simplicity - Juan Carlos Sánchez
Being a newbie, i'm not!! my bandwidth is done for, so i gotta wait till the next month to become active =) - Praveen Vasudev
ditto - anna sauce
I haven't been on Friendfeed very much because I've been looking for work. - tomit

That's really odd, no doesn't work I get a "Houston, we have a problem" page. :-( I've tried it in Chrome and FFox. - Kol Tregaskes
I'm actually on Safari, so that could have explained things but.... YAY and glad you got there in the end, Kol!! :) - Emma
wow lovely! i am on safari, worked ok. - Tatty Gibson

QUESTION: What types of posts would you like to see LESS of on FriendFeed?
Me: Posts about Twitter. Seriously, I've seen less detalied and shorter commentaries on the freaking Bible than I've seen given on Twitter. It's a social media service and you only have 140 characters at a time. What else do you really need to know? - Steven Perez
Coming in a very close second? Posts about Facebook. - Steven Perez
Is the hide feature malfunctioning or is it the content of the Facebook and Twitter status updates that are too inane? - Mathew A. Koeneker
Agreed, Steven, I'm not a twitter user and the one sided conversation doesn't make sense. - Greg Guitarbuster
Less 5 best, 50 best, 10 worst, 6 biggest, 7 secret, 25 newest whatever posts. - Brian Sullivan
Posts about posts - WorldofHiglet
Mathew: (a) Hide works fine, but I save it for Higlet's posts. :p (b) More about the inane content concerning the 7th-grade-my-dad-can-beat-up-your-dad type of posts that usually surround posts about Twitter and Facebook. - Steven Perez from IM
blah blah blah DYSP! - WorldofHiglet
I honestly like the mix of content as is on FF. Lots of useful / serious topics, tons of stuff & nonsense type posts, rooms for topics I'm into. Also find it super-easy to ignore any and all posts that don't appeal - I do find Facebook really uninteresting FWIW ... - Patrick Jordan
I'd like to see fewer posts about friendfeed :P - ·[▪_▪]·
I think there are way to many serious posts. ;) - Uncle CW™
Steven: That is pretty much how I feel. Now back to b-ball. :) - Mathew A. Koeneker
I'm sick of posts about stuff killing other stuff or how stuff will make money, but that's not a problem in FF alone. - Rahsheen ™, Coach Rah
I with you SP. Freakin twitter app this and twitter app that... - BEX
Thank you, Steven. - Ken Stewart | ChangeForge
LOLcats/etc. Also, discussions about social networking. Also, everything! (kidding about that last one. Maybe.) - Andrew C
There's a guy on here who streams his Spice Girls track list on here - less of that please :-p - Kol Tregaskes
I know that guy! I borrowed his mp3 collection so that we could both play them! :D - Steven Perez from IM
I'm not seeing near enough about Wakoopa. - MVB (Grinch of FF)
Is that some kind of new Pokemon? - Steven Perez from IM
Mark: Whats the whole point of Wakoopa? Steven: LOL - Roberto Bonini
Roberto you may as well ask "how do I understand women" or "Will Twitter ever make money?" No one could possibly answer the question. - MVB (Grinch of FF)
Mark: hehe Nice come back. :) - Roberto Bonini

Three Quick Ways to Inhance Your Flickr Experience on Flickr - Photo Sharing!
"However, looking through Flickr's Explore sometimes gets tiring and boring - it's typically pictures of flowers with nice bokeh, infants wearing cute hats and overphotoshopped self-portraits (those categories seem to represent 80% of what Flickr formula considers to be the most interesting photos). Here are quick tools that I recently discovered that enhanced my Flickr experience." - Thomas Hawk from Bookmarklet
Slickr/FlickrFan, Flexpore, Photophlow -- all worth checking out. - Thomas Hawk
Slickr sounds nice, but I'm too lazy to fill a form to request api keys and stuff. - bnoise
