ماکارونی غذای خوبیه ولی از بس تو خانواده ها و یا مجردها به خاطر سریع و آسان بودن درستش میکنن دیگه اون جذابیت لازم رو نداره - پاستا انتخاب بهتریه

"Critics have called alien epic Avatar a version of Dances With Wolves because it's about a white guy going native and becoming a great leader. But Avatar is just the latest scifi rehash of an old white guilt fantasy. Spoilers..."
- Steven Perez

"These are movies about white guilt. Our main white characters realize that they are complicit in a system which is destroying aliens, AKA people of color - their cultures, their habitats, and their populations. The whites realize this when they begin to assimilate into the "alien" cultures and see things from a new perspective. To purge their overwhelming sense of guilt, they switch...

It's interesting that even when "we" are invading "their" planet, "they" are the aliens. Go figure.
- Mark J
I found it much more "Heart of Darkness." The general was very Kurtzian. And the colonialism themes.
- Shawn Zehnder Rossi
Ummm *what*? Wow, a guy makes a sci-fi movie and people immediately turn it into a racial issue? #sigh. As I've said before, it's possible to read racial undertones into *anything*, but that doesn't make your conclusions correct. This is total bullshit IMO.
- LANjackal
Did you not see the movie? The whole movie is about race, culture and colonialism.
- Rob H.
Mark, I thought that it was actually interesting because at the end, Jakesully (I say it that way because he was mostly Na'vi in his thinking by that point) was like "the aliens were forced off of Pandora, and only a few were chosen to remain" referring to the humans. I thought that switch was clever. BTW, I think that the original article is a classic case of making a mountain out of a...

Like, I feel like there not only this string of "white guilt" movie plots, but also the "guilt about white guilt" commentary that always follows close behind (very meta, I know). To me, it's a bit tiresome how predictable it all becomes.
- Chieze Okoye
+Chieze. But I also get tired of these kinds of movies getting made over and over again.
- Kamilah Reed (K. Gill)
And here I thought it was just a decent movie with great graphics, some explosions, and a happy ending. What well-balanced human wouldn't want to be a Na'vi after seeing how cool their culture/world is? BTW, there's already a Wikipedia article on the language: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki...
- Tinfoil 2.0
LogEx, yeah, no kidding! I want to ride fucking blue dragon things every day and walk through luminescent forests and connect with a planet-sized brain. 8^D
- Chieze Okoye
What I really want to know is... what's with Hollywood and naked blue people? First Watchmen, now this.
- Tinfoil 2.0
Kamilah, yeah, I can see that. But for me, the spectacle of this movie trumped all of that. I was engrossed in how visually rich it was, so the banality of the plot honestly was quite far back in my mind at the time.
- Chieze Okoye
Finally saw it, and it would be one thing if Avatar was on its own, but it really is following in a long tradition. (money quote from io9: "This is a classic scenario you've seen in non-scifi epics from Dances With Wolves to The Last Samurai, where a white guy manages to get himself accepted into a closed society of people of color and eventually becomes its most awesome member.")...

Was anybody expecting something else? - I like Eric's points. Would this be a different story if the lead character was a person of colour, or minority culture?
- Alistair (alpinefolk)
Alistair, yeah, it would be "The Word for World is Forest" by Ursula K Le Guin. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki... I really do think the story would be pretty different if an actual Na'vi instigated the armed resistance against the humans, instead of a human in a Na'vi body. This meme actually has a name: "What these people need is a honky." http://oyceter.livejournal.com/602541...
- Victor Ganata
Agreed. Before it was "Dances with Wolves," it was "Lawrence of Arabia."
- Ciaoenrico
@Victor - I can't decide whether that name is funnier or "Mighty Whitey" ( http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki... - warning, as a TV Tropes page, it is highly addictive and you may lose hours of your life following links to franchise writeups and then other tropes.)
- Andrew C (✓)
@Victor, actually you are right. Although I'm not sure the story would be all that different if the hero was a human from a minority culture.
- Alistair (alpinefolk)
Alistair makes a good point. It only appears to be white guilt because Hollywood is very bad at making movies with a diverse group of actors. If James Cameron were half as smart as he thinks he is, he would have cast a non-white in the leading role. He's undoubtedly the best technical director that we have today, but that doesn't mean that he's anywhere near the best director.
- Scoble, Alex Scoble
God forbid that they would actually have a black man lead the black tribe. I mean this is an old fantasy still alive, like white men play native american indian roles in old US westerns. You would think that to make the character more believable they would actually use real authentic indians to play the part of native american indians. It's like removing a race, telling them they don't...

- Jeunelle Foster
Alistair, the story would be largely the same with a human of a different ethnicity, sure. But it would be quite different if the hero was a native Navi.
- Andrew C (✓)
from Android
Removing a race, telling them they don't exist yet playing their parts, culture and identity is like telling them you don't trust them enough to even act the part or be themselves. It's a fucking insult to my race. I'm happy to say that I have already eaten all my enemies :)
- Jeunelle Foster
It's true that Hollywood is quite unable to cast a person-of-color as the lead in a movie, unless the movie revolves around the actual race and culture of the person-of-color. But the "Mighty Whitey" trope is another thing all together. It wouldn't have changed the underlying problem at all if all they did was cast a person-of-color as Jake Sully.
- Victor Ganata
I agree with you mostly Victor, but "It's true that Hollywood is quite unable to cast a person-of-color as the lead in a movie, unless the movie revolves around the actual race and culture of the person-of-color." is a bit overbroad of a statement. Will Smith? Denzel Washington? Maybe "finds it hard" would have been a more accurate phrase, but I get what you're going for.
- Chieze Okoye
Yeah, I admit it's hyperbolic, but it does seem to have been a struggle. I feel like it's only been in very recent years that they've let Will Smith and Denzel Washington actually play true leads
- Victor Ganata
Clearly the answer is for imperialist non-white nations to embark on large-scale colonization and empire building so that they can then experience a collective guilt that will manifest itself in "a whole new world" of "Pocahontas-Dances With Wolves - District 9 - Avatar' storylines. Or... maybe not.
- Mark J
(I know that "A Whole New World" was from The Little Mermaid (not Pocahontas) but it sorta worked here, OKAY!)
- Mark J
LOL. It's from "Aladdin". I guess that movie *does* have a blue person who doesn't need humans to save him.
- Victor Ganata
Okay Victor... I've never been good and tracking my Disney tunes! I also continually get Snow White and Sleeping Beauty mixed up! They looked pretty much interchangeable in my books when I was a little tyke.
- Mark J
@Victor - *laugh* ... hey wait, he totally needed someone to use their third wish to free him.
