I've had several conversations today about gay marriage and at the end of the day, the majority feel as I do. Living is tough enough as it is without finding that one person in life you love and want to share everything with and not being able to do so. No one has the right to deny a mutual expression of love - no one. First Obama - now this? We're on a really good streak of good feelings here about getting past old prejudices. I've got more hope for the future happiness of my daughter than ever before.
- Vince DeGeorge
@Vince. Agreed - I'm a longtime Virginia dude who moved out to San Francisco back in 1996. Having been out here 12 years, my sensibilities on things have certainly changed. I wrote this post "Same Sex Marriage in California - What Change Will We See?" (http://tinyurl.com/5kncrl) as a reflection of that understanding.
- Hutch Carpenter
Congratulations! It is always a wonderful thing to see two people publicly declare their love for each other regardless of what gender they are. This world needs more love, not less.
- Riayn
awww Vince... your last sentence... *sniffles*
- Yolanda
I never thought of Gina about been gay (I am, and I really like Lifehacker). You know, just for that stupid thing that I have had to be used: she is a woman, and can be a freak geek tech superb blogger. Now she is more than that, she is a freak geek tech Diva (for me). Wish her (and spouse) all the best!
- Fran
Marriage is more complicated then UR right2use a public park. Marriage is designed4creating relationships 4human reproduction(which*IS*important). When U demand gay marriage UR asking 4the same benefits as people who need government assistance because they have no choice over their functions(in the same respect U can't help being gay) Children R expensive. Please take sympathy on straight people. I don't hate U! Obama doesn't support GAY MARRIAGE!
- Noah David Simon
Noah, if I understand your post correctly, you're repeating the canard that marriage is the purpose of reproduction. If you believe that, then my wife and I, who do not and never will have children, are not married. If you believe that, then you are invited to perform a marital act on yourself.
- Mitch Wagner
Can someone repeat what Tad said before he chickened out and deleted it? ;) Gina = Wonderful person. Hope to meet her IRL someday.
- Yuvi
Great happiness to you and your partner, Gina.
- Chris Baskind
I didn't delete my comment - I think the original poster thought I was being serious. It was just a sarcastic comment decrying the fact that these two loving people are obviously destroying the very fabric of our society with their happiness. Read this quickly in case Mitch removes it!
- Chrimmus Tad
I'm surprised though cause Mitch is cool and he oughta know I was teasing...
- Chrimmus Tad
I am deeply indebted to Gina for her words on her blog, so it's with that deep gratitude that I wish her a heartfelt congratulations! Let your happiness rock this country's puritanical masses to the core!
- Pete Delucchi
Lifehacker rocks because of Gina! I wish you 2 the absolute best in life and in love!
- Siddharth Deb
Mitch: Marriage *IS* about preparing an environment 4 children... absolutely. That does not mean the environment is ready or maybe it might even be sadly nearly impossible. But as long as it it theoretically possible then marriage should be recommended. People can love each other without marriage (right?), they should even have a right to laws that protect them in cases of death and...

- Noah David Simon
I didn't delete Tad's message -- at least not on purpose. I know and like Tad -- well, I know him electronically, we're friends on several social networks at this point. Not sure why what he posted here is now gone.
- Mitch Wagner
Noah, sorry, but it isn' "nearly impossible" for my wife and I to have children -- it is *impossible.* Therefore, any definition of marriage which is based on childrearing excludes us and millions of other childless couples. I wish you the best as well -- and that wish includes your getting over your irrational prejudices against homosexuality and realizing that Gina and Terra's marriage in no way hurts heterosexual marriage.
- Mitch Wagner
you accuse me of being irrational, but it is U who have determined 2have a purely emotional reaction. Sarah is considered to be mother of Isaac according to scripture and yet she was barren. Science is not as certain as the tyranny coming from the Blue State fashion police. As for 2women it will not happen without maybe a "Virgin" birth, but in this case I would be willing 2bet that...

- Noah David Simon
Noah, quoting Scripture is not evidence. You oppose gay marriage because the Bible tells you so? That's fine for you -- but why should those of us who are not Christian be required to follow the rules of your religion? And you have not either showed how gay marriage hurts people -- you simply repeated that it does, several times, and concluded with the assertion that God says so, that's why.
- Mitch Wagner
scripture is not the evidence. it is an example of an exception to the norm. it wouldn't matter if I quoted myth. science is as limited to truth as religion can be and you are very arrogant to think otherwise... the only consistency that I can see is these women will not under any condition be making children together. This is beyond science and religion. the good people who are open minded enough to understand multiple viewpoints on truth will also have enough of a heart to label two women exactly that
- Noah David Simon
you might be able to convince others that the cliff is not there, but the good people will pass legislation otherwise. (regardless of your personal viewpoint of origin and Dasein)
- Noah David Simon
That's so awesome. :) Gina is one of the most intelligent people working in our industry today... no doubt. She must be beside herself with joy.
- l0ckergn0me
my guess is if she is intelligent she will recognize a disruption in the conversation here, unfortunately Intelligence has nothing to do with moral fiber.
- Noah David Simon
Wow...reading Noah is like watching a wild animal in it's natural habitat for the first time or perhaps the last remaining small pox virus samples at the CDC. I had read about them, heard about them but wow...seriously? That's what you believe Noah...
- Kamath (नमः)
it isn't a question of belief in conventional form Kamath... it is a question of what is best for a family. again the blue state libel is so lazy... try harder to rationalize your slants. Existential points will not put food in children's mouths. This is about tax dollars going to people who are confusing arrogance with love.
- Noah David Simon
It is bad enough that you are unethical and unloving, but to showboat it to your snobby friends as some kind counter cultural hip trophy is disgusting.
- Noah David Simon
Noah - you are basing this "norm" from biblical days. By the same grounds it seems you would be opposed to interracial marriage because that is against this norm. I truly hope you are not as ignorant as your posts make you seem - but I'm betting against it right now.
- Chris Ridenour
Noah: (1) I do not speak for all the people of the blue states here. This is just me talking (2) Do you actually know any gay people? Any long-standing homosexual couples? (3) I'm still waiting for evidence that gay marriage is harmful -- you claim to have presented evidence, but I've seen none from you.
- Mitch Wagner
I'm speaking from New York. It is a blue state (plenty of gay couples in my town of Poughkeepsie. Vassar college is here) and our insurance rates are through the roof. my life is here, but not having any ability to reach a common moral understanding has left our society broken. The sexual revolution has left us without a workable frame of reference. Lots of confusion
- Noah David Simon
I've been with my guy for the past 7 years and I'm only 28, we said if we ever had the chance and felt the time was right that we'd go get married. But currently Texas isn't so friendly towards us, even though it has the largest amount of same-sex households in the US.
- Got80s
from twhirl
family is the only kind of socialism that works... it works because it takes into account the different elements of the unit effectively. Each member providing a different role and expectation. the 70s and the sexual revolution abrupted this cohesion and we have yet to of found workable models for those who exist outside of the nuclear family. The best evidence is the insurance rates. NON NUCLEAR FAMILIES DO NOT WORK!
- Noah David Simon
Noah, you're not citing evidence, you're just repeating yourself and paraphrasing your claims. I could say that all elephants are purple, and it wouldn't be true no matter how many times I repeated the claim. You claim to cite one piece of evidence -- that homosexuality drives up insurance rates. What evidence do you have to support that?
- Mitch Wagner
Also, your claim that non-nuclear families don't work is contradicted by the millions of people who've grown up to lead well-adjusted lives after being raised by single parents, or adult relatives. Why, one of them is running for President of the United States. You may not like Obama but you have to admit he's an extremely accomplished individual. His non-nuclear family worked.
- Mitch Wagner
your science Dr. Quack has no relevance when dealing with moral fiber. If you have just discovered that it is limiting then you begin to understand the kind if tyrannical oppression Blue State values have defined truth with. you have just put a hole in your own argument. If you can't see a parallel between so called "Red State" and "Blue State" insurance prices then you don't want to...

Noah - Do you keep a pack of paper towels by your computer monitor, or just wipe the angry spittle off your screen with your sleeve?
- Mitch Wagner
that is libel. I put a lot of energy into this thread and I expect better from you then name calling. I brought up a serious issue and the best response you can come up with is a personal attack. This is very ugly and snobbish. I don't hate. you are the haters.
- Noah David Simon
you can't prove very much when it is a sociological question, but it is very easy to prove that what we are doing here in the Blue States is not working by looking at economic conditions like Insurance rates. We can also look at the pure fact that children will not be fed based on the actions here and that people are being hurt by a disbanded boundary. In the same respect if a women's bathroom is ever deemed unconstitutional then it might hurt the fabric of women's lives
- Noah David Simon
Can we prove that men pooping in the same room as women, hurt the women? probably not. But we have seen higher test score from women in same sex schools. It is the arrogance of science to think it can prove such things, and it is how a generation of young men ended up on Prozac... because a bunch of elitists felt their studies were a truth when in fact their studies reflected exactly what they wanted to sell. bullshit. the emperor wore no clothes.

Firefox 3 has just been released and Firefox is attempting to get into the Guinness World Record Books with the most downloads in a 24 hour period.

i'm not part of the religious right and i think google doing this is stupid. there are plenty of ppl who don't support the queer lifestyle who aren't religious zealots. it's a flawed assumption to assume everyone who's "normal" supports queers. what's abnormal here is two men not realizing that the sperm in their bodies corresponds with eggs and not colorectal walls.
- Brooks Bayne
I don't understand the dust up. What religious zealots will search for anything related to the "gay" word - ie they'll never have to see the rainbow flag unless they choose to. Do we even know if this is permanent? Couldn't it just be a temporary design element, much like the redesigned Google logos for holidays?
- Jennifer Van Grove
from twhirl
It's all part of the Gay Agenda Wolfie baby. First marriage, then Google, and next they'll be recruiting in your neighborhood.
- Chrimmus Tad
Jennifer, just the fact that Google tolerates or in any way endorses, however slight, the evil Gay Lifestyle is enough to set off some folks regardless of whether it affects them or not.
- Chrimmus Tad
it's just secular progressives running amok in america...
- Brooks Bayne
Jennifer: the moment Bill O'Reilly gets wind of this, most republicants will come to Google just to try it out. It's my guess that Wolfsbayne has already tipped him off.
- jcunwired
or anyone who's not a republican that doesn't agree with the queer agenda. that's 70% of america according to most any recent poll.
- Brooks Bayne
Jennifer, Tad has hit it on the head, it doesn't matter if they never see this themselves, the moment it hits the right wing blogs, then eventually O'Reilly, instant zealot storm
- Duncan Riley
Hehe - I love it when people think there's an actual "queer agenda!" I think it's something like the "colored agenda" and the "women's agenda" before it.
- Chrimmus Tad
Ok, I'll bite. There really is a 'queer agenda'?
- jcunwired
The "queer agenda"? Seriously?! I am so glad to finally have a chance to use the block user feature that FF just released. Ahhh, that's better.
- Christopher Sacca
this is not a Republican vs Democrat debate. John McCain is not against gays and neither am I. Gay marriage is not supported by Obama! whip up the bullshit why don't you?
- Noah David Simon
Sacca, Sprague, the moment I saw the comments from Wolfsbayne I did the same thing to him. Bless FF for introducing a block feature, there's no place in my FF stream for hate speech.
- Duncan Riley
Awww, next thing you know Wolfie will be dinging us for not tolerating his intolerance!
- Chrimmus Tad
I get that some might not like homosexuality but how does it effect YOU? Get your nose out of other people's business. This logic leads down to no relationships between folks who are sterile? And I assume this means sperm must ALWAYS be aimed for the egg? *sigh*
- AJ Kohn
Dang, I forgot about the block feature. I love you guys! tee hee
- jcunwired
Every sperm is sacred. Every sperm is great. When a sperm is wasted, God gets quite irate.
- Chrimmus Tad
Hey, I don't see Wolfbayne's comments anymore... what happened? Oh, that's right - he was BLOCKED. I have not patience for intolerance or bigotry.
- Vince DeGeorge
@Noah: You are right. This isn't about being anti-gay. It's about being pro-rainbows. Why so sensitive?
- Andrew
@AJ Exactly! And the only reason anyone who disapproves can gives is religion. Please. I need a much more compelling reason that that.
- Michelle Martinez
I'm not surprised Google did that. I imagine I'll be getting blocked in the coming days. Oh well.
- Bwana ☠
@Michelle: Yup. Not nearly a compelling enough reason. This religious bigotry has gone on forever though. Best shown in Swift's 1726 Gulliver's Travels where they go to war over how to crack and egg. Big Endians vs. Small Endians.
- AJ Kohn
I don't agree with his comments - but I'm also uncomfortable with why everyone is suddenly so self-righteous about blocking someone.
- Victor Ryden
Victor: this is exactly what block is made for: to get people out of your living room who just don't belong there. If you want him in YOUR living room you can keep him. Me? I choose not to let bigots and jerks into my living room and I'd rather not have them as readers, either.
- Robert Scoble
I haven't blocked anyone. If we shut ourselves off from any other viewpoints then our own view can get awful narrow. "What the thinker thinks, the prover proves." While what Wolfsbayne said was tasteless and kind of dumb, it could have been an awful lot worse. I want my memes to be constantly challenged. But yeah, I'll block someone who's extremely abusive or annoying - I've just been lucky enough not to run into any on FF.
- Chrimmus Tad
Tad: I see enough bigotry and idiocy in society. I don't need to see it on my screen.
- Robert Scoble
I didn't mean to insult you - our standards are just a bit different. Besides you sift through enough noise that your tolerance HAS to be a lot lower.
- Chrimmus Tad
Victor, personally I found his hate speech deeply offensive, and he crossed the line for me, as it did for others. It is only the third or 4th time I've used block if it's any help, and the other two times were against FFloggers (FF spammers). as Robert notes, that's what its there for.
- Duncan Riley
Robert - I don't have a problem with blocking someone. It was the bragging attitude of, I don't like it so I will not listen to it. In another post you mention Rush Limbaugh, obviously you haven't "blocked" him, you just realize where he's coming from and take it into account.
- Victor Ryden
Wolfie, you're absolutely right that it's not just religious people who are against the queer lifestyle. Bigots and morons oppose it too.
- Mitch Wagner
Let's re-focus the argument, part of the article said "Google is making overtly political statements in its key search area, a stand that for Google is actually unprecedented as far as I can recall." What if a search for Obama gave only positive results with a special banner. Would that be OK?
- Victor Ryden
Just as long as Google shows a pic of Bush's famous middle-finger pic from the videoframe when you look up anything relating to the GOP
- Glenn Batuyong
A supposedly neutral search engine showing obvious bias is wrong, and I'd feel the same if Google displayed little crucifixes all over the page when I searched on Jesus, or a red-white-and-blue banner when I search on "United States". But it's their search page so they can do what they want with it. Just as I can choose not to use it, which I should be able to do without being called "intolerant"
- Craig Eddy
Victor, the search results from Google don't look all that different from the search results by Microsoft. Unless you want to make the claim that Google and Microsoft are allied in an infernal scheme to forward the "gay agenda," I think you're going to have to drop the "only positive results" line.
- David Worrell
David: I think Victor's point was, IF Google were to decide to only show "positive" results for searches on "Obama", how much could one trust their results on any topic without knowing if there was a search engine bias for/against that topic?
- Craig Eddy
If Google was following a "Queer Agenda" then they would also have the rainbow stripes when you search for 'queer', but the stripes only show when you search for 'gay', 'lesbian', bisexual' and 'transgender'. Therefore it would be safe to say that the Gay Mafia has taken over Google not the Queer Agenda. :)
- Riayn
David - I was just trying to bring the discussion back to treating one search term different from another, it would seem to show at least favoritism, even if the search results are the same. Suppose an Obama search showed a Lapel Flag Pin and one for McCain did not. How about that?
- Victor Ryden
Craig: if that were the case, I'd be very interested in learning more about it. All that seems to be happening here, though, is that Google showing support for a subset of humanity that's been treated poorly for a very long time. And they're doing it in a way that shouldn't really bother anyone (other than people that make a habit of searching for "the gay"). In the absence of any real evidence of bias, I personally couldn't justify switching search engines based on something as trivial as this.
- David Worrell
Congratulations, Victor - you succeeded in coming up with an example even more trivial than this rainbow banner.
- David Worrell
David - I wanted to make a point about the discussion and I chose my example carefully, as "the Rainbow" and "Flag Lapels" are both touchstones to a lot of people. I agree with Terra310, that if you start to doubt Google's impartiality a LOT a problems arise.
- Victor Ryden
Society as a whole is doing a pretty damn good job of marginalising gay people like me. Google putting up some rainbow stripes honestly does not increase this feeling of marginalisation. Seeing the majority of the comments in this post certainly does. Do you all get so upset when Google has a different logo for Black History Month or Martin Luther King's Anniversary? Or is only homophobia cool these days?
- Riayn
Riayn - It's more an issue of trust when you do a search. If Google had done a special Logo on it's initial search page to recognize California's decision, that would be something else. I'm not saying people wouldn't argue about it, they would. However, a lot of us feel that the search is the like Caesar's wife, beyond reproach.
- Victor Ryden
@Riayn, the rainbow stripes don't bother me, nor do different logos for other holidays. I do wonder why Google consistently ignores Memorial Day.
- Larry Huffman
fuck 'em. no seriously, fuck these people who want to keep this country in a time warp. people give them too much credit.
- Cee Bee
The comparison between Obama vs. McCain is false. Reasonable people can disagree over which of them to vote for - or whether to vote for either of them. However, all decent people ought to support gay marriage.
- Mitch Wagner
Google did not filter search results - they just put a little rainbow flag next to them.
- Mitch Wagner
Also, I don't know what this "queer agenda" is, but I'm sure it involves taffeta.
- Mitch Wagner

Robert has blocked me so he cannot read this but please someone explain to him that his "living room" metaphor is lame! You do not go to a public park set up your couch and chairs inviting people for a discussion and once you disagree you ask your bodyguards to through them out of the park! "living room' metaphor works on a blog or a private room, not in a public forum! And for someone like Robert to brag about his blocking is beneath him! I hope he will look at his behavior introspectively!
- Igor The Troll יִצְחָק
True Followers who respect what you saying and engage you is more important than anything! Followers are followers no matter where they follow you, your blog, Twitter, Friend Feed, or other Social Media network.
- Igor The Troll יִצְחָק
I was wondering a similar thing myself since I have more Twitter followers than on my blog. Perhaps I am more interesting on Twitter or perhaps the Twitter format is more appealing than blogs.
- Riayn
A blog takes more energy and time for someone to follow. Think about it: Most people don't even follow 10 blogs, and only the exceptional follow 100+ or 200+. Twitter is much easier because the need to keep up to date with ALL of that information is NOT as important. So it's the blog subscribers that is a better indicator of influence because it takes more to process what you're putting out.
- Ben Parr
blog followers follow your thoughts, twitter followers follow your life, friendfeed followers follow your branding.
- K.D.
I guess it depends on where you post the most useful content. Being followed alone doesn't make one influential. Having ideas that people use and share does.
- Heidi Cool
I don't follow many and am not followed by many. I do get lots of hits on my blog ("lots" being relative), and that's probably the most important to me. Then again, I'm not a pro blogger or integrally involved in computer tech.
- Kimberly J
both blog and other social networking followers are very important, but i think SN followers may also help you by promote your content themselves cause they tend to share more than you blog followers.
- homaid
for my audience, blog subs; actually, I just care if ppl are reading my blog
- Kimberly J
It really depends. I find making a message on Plurk to be complicated compared to Twitter.
- Corvida
I totally agree Corvida. Twitter is much more user friendly and easy to use compared to Plurk.
- Riayn
I'm a big believer in using what works for an individual. I actually prefer even FriendFeed over Twitter now. However, most of my "people" are over on Twitter, so I live in both. Plurk is a non-issue. It doesn't solve any issue for me in terms of features or functions lacking in Twitter that make me say, "I have to have that."

I think it's a mistake to not start one Darren. Think of all the content ideas you could get from it. Ala searchenginerountable....via feedalizr
- Jim Kukral
No, my attention is too divided as it is with social media and writing
- Leslie Poston
I think it is a great idea, but you need a team of moderators who are truly democratic and open to controversial issue! If you start banning users because you do not agree with what they saying, it will be a negative backlash for Problogger! While I have all the confidence in Darren, but I cannot see Darren always moderating the forum. So unless Darren has a group of individuals who he can trust and delegate this authority, while at the same time supervising them, it is better not to do it!
- Igor The Troll יִצְחָק
So Darren please ask yourself this question, "Do I have the proper resources to run a forum?" And resources means technology, people, and your own time and energy!
- Igor The Troll יִצְחָק
FOLLOW UP QUESTION - what areas/topics would you like such a forum to cover (if you answer yes that is)
- Darren Rowse
While I think a forum would work well on your site, because you have such a large and strong community already, Igor has a good point. The resources to run a forum are very different from running a blog. As for topics to cover. Look at http://forum.authorityblogger.com/ they have a good start for a blogging forum and topics.
- LGR
Regarding the follow up question... I think it should cover all the obvious topics, like social media, SEO, affiliate programs, AdSense, etc. Another interesting forum would be an "ethics" forum or something along those lines, for people to discuss their views on the ethics of various promotion/monetisation strategies.
- Eric Daams
I would love one, Darren. I think it could be a great place for bloggers to connect, find like-minded people, and have a place they feel they can have a voice with other bloggers.
- Mark Frost
I think the topics should be Social Networking, SEO, Advertising, Writing Advice, Viral Marketing, and maybe some off-topic sections. Just promise to use vBulletin, Darren.
- Mark Frost
No thank you! Did my Wiki days on Wikipedia! It is very hard to maintain an industry wiki unless you have professional editors.
- Igor The Troll יִצְחָק
I would probably decline if Darren asked me to be a moderator on the forum! It is a lot of work and you have to be impartial, fair, and respect all members beginners and advance!
- Igor The Troll יִצְחָק
I would love to see a forum on ProBlogger, but like many people who have already commented, I am concerned about whether ProBlogger has the resources to run one.
- Riayn
I would sure visit it a few times a week.
- Michael
I'd like to make one more point because I know Problogger is already a massive sort of community even without a forum, but there is no real way for a blogger to get sort of instant feedback from other bloggers about their progress. Take for instance if I wanted help developing my writing skills to connect more with readers or needed tips on how to be more creative, I could probably get feedback within minutes.
- Mark Frost
I'm confident Darren can pull together a team to help. I moderate a large forum and would be willing to help or moderate a new ProBlogger forum as well. I'm a web designer, so could help on installing a forum too, if help was needed with that.
- Traci Knoppe
No thanks. There are plenty of forums for bloggers already. Too much UGC at problogger might allow Darren to retire completely and kill off the main blog itself.
- Andy Roberts
Yes for a forum. Get a few forum users to moderate it.
- Guinevere Orvis
If you make a forum, make sure you integrate the blog. Make it so that each of your blog posts spawns a thread in the forum where people can respond. Have the comments from your blog and the comments from the forum thread cross-pollinate, so that the discussion is complete. If you do this, there will be less of a wall between your blog and the forums.
- Ed Healy
@Ed I'm not sure that's a good idea and that has been one of the things keeping Darren from making a ProBlogger forum in the past. I think if he makes a forum, the discussions should be separate from that of the blog and its posts as to not have the two interfere with each other.
- Mark Frost
Is there a reason why tying them together would be bad? If the concern is whether forum posts will pollute the quality of the blog comments, one solution is to have the cross-pollination only go one way. IOW, have the blog populate forum threads (post only, no comments), so that people can discuss the blog in the forums, but stop the tie-in there.
- Ed Healy
Yes, but only if you'd participate too. :)
- Sarah Parker
I'm not a very big fan of forums. At least, not anymore. I think that the way things go on ProBlogger's FriendFeed Room and comments on the blog it's about right for my needs of communication. It seams I appreciate a lot more the simplicity of FF conversations.
- Alex Cristache
The two comments I posted this morning (WordPress questions) are exactly the sort of thing that I would love a forum for!
- Nancy Nally
Find like-minded people to interact with in one place.
- Janette Toral
thanks everyone for your opinions - lots to think about here. I agree though - I'd only do this if I can find enough moderators to help cover the load. This is what I did at my photography blog and it worked quite well.
- Darren Rowse
I had this idea after the discussion on how many RSS feeds we have. Please post the link to your site or sites that you would like people in the room to subscribe to and we can all show our support for each other
http://knobee.com/feed/ You won't have to worry about me filling up your feedreader, but there won't be any harm in adding me in case I do write something.
- Vince DeGeorge
What an excellent idea! Looking forward to a much fatter RSS reader.
- Muhammad Saleem
That is a great method of sharing. Way to go Jaybol~
- ViralReality
http://eklapper.com — there will be a lot of name dropping as I will be writing a post based on these FriendFeed discussions!
- Ethan Klapper
Ur nuts to think people aren't just going to drop in their own feeds. But I never said I don't like the idea. Checkout MikeonTV's pictureblog http://mikeontv.tumblr.com/rss

Now .. what we need is an OPML file of all these for easy importing.
- Tris Hussey
Just created an OPML file for these, it's hand coded so my apologies if one or two of them don't work but at least it makes it a bit simpler then hand adding all feeds. http://tjnphotography.com/socialm...
- Timothy Neilen
that OPML didn't work... or at least wasn't very "Open"
- Noah David Simon
Worked for FeedDemon just dandy. Thank you! Subbed to all

Thanks for the link. Nice and easy to install which is always a bonus. I am looking forward to giving it a test run on my next blog post.
- Riayn
Yep, we used it occasionally on our self hosted WP. So far, no hiccups with i's Firefox extension while using it. We find the suggested links and articles really helpful while the images comes handy sometimes.
- Jonathan Kong
I used zemanta for a hot minute, but I strongly dislike branding being placed on my site without my explicit permission.
- Andrea Hill
@Andrea: You can take away the logo simply by deleting it.
- Jonathan Kong
This sounds very interesting. I actually just started a blog and I've been looking for something to help spice it up. It's very basic at the moment.
- Natitude
The only thing I don't like about it is that when you colour the text it bulks all the text together removing all paragraphs. Whenever I use it I have to strip out all the HTML that disrupts the formating!
- Joe Dawson
I'm going to play around with it just for fun!
- MikeonTV
You won't be disappointed, check preview before you submit to make sure it hasn't messed up the format though!
- Joe Dawson
Darren, when linking to websites in blog posts, I've noticed that most bloggers do not have the site open in a new window. To me this sorta defeats the purpose of getting traffic if you're going to send them away when they click a link in your post. What's your advice on this?
The blogger that sends traffic away gets it back. Why? Well, I visit sites over and over when they send me to cool things. Heck, look at how addicted I am to FriendFeed. Why is that? Because FriendFeed sends me away to more cool stuff than any other site.
- Robert Scoble
Look at Google. The job of a search engine is to send you to what you're looking for as quickly as possible, with the fewest pageviews. Yet Google has overtaken Yahoo! in pageviews. Go figure. It's the same kind of deal.
- Voyagerfan5761
Bloggers should learn how to create links that open in new windows, most blogging platform have this option when establishing the link. That way your visitor can go away and explore new sites in a new window, whilst still maintaining a connection to your blog if they want to go on reading what you have to say. It offers the best of both worlds.
- Riayn
If you write compelling stuff, people will likely open the links in windows themselves to keep reading your article, or come back anyways. If you don't write compelling stuff, what reason is there for folks to come back? And if the site you link to is more compelling than your stuff, do they not deserve the traffic more than you? Plus people do get pissed off when a site decides to start opening windows they don't want.
- Arachne Jericho
I always have links open in a new window, because as a Web consumer myself, I don't want to have to click the Back button all to often. So for me, the default is target="new".
- Louis Gray
Another thought; I am reminded of the time Neil Gaiman switched to links not opening in new windows, because it did piss off a large enough (or vocal enough) part of his audience. And he has not switched back. To me that seems more than proof enough that "new" shouldn't be the default unless people want to configure their browsers that way. But then again, that's just me. *g*
- Arachne Jericho
Thanks everyone for your comments. I myself prefer a link to open in a new window, because as Louis said, I don't want to have to click the back button, or as is most often the case, I start blog hopping and before you know it, I forget how to get back to the blog I was reading in the first place. But it's not really what I prefer that matters, it's what my readers want.
- Sharon McPherson
I just get into the habit of using Ctrl+Click (to address the new-window issue that popped up in this thread).
- Voyagerfan5761
I've written about this and asked readers for what they think at http://www.problogger.net/archive... hope that that link helps. I personally prefer not to open links in new windows and get a little frustrated when others do it. But as you'll see in the comments of that post - people are divided on that one!
- Darren Rowse
I believe in permission marketing: give users choice over their browsing; if you write great content they will come back. If visitors aren't into what's on my blog then either they're not the target or it's my fault. Building good content, establishing trust and offering choice will get you traffic. Fear of loss isn't a strategy for winning I say.
- phil baumann
Thanks so much for the link to your post, It does like are divided. Those that are in favor of NOT opening a link in a new window, say that it should be up to the reader if a new window should open, however; as one of your commentors pointed out, the AVERAGE reader may not know how to open a new tab or window. I recently saw this to be true when I had to show my 30 year old daughter, who has been using a computer for 3 years, how to open new windows and tabs using the mouse.
- Sharon McPherson
I like having the choice - if I want to go to another window cmd-click will get me there or my browser starts getting busy and distracting.
- Sally Church
I like to provide different link resources on my blog and all of them open in the same window. But for MyBlogLog feed the links to my activities open in a new window! Maybe I am am "anonymous blogger" like Robert Scoble the "omnipresent blogger" says. But maybe we share our Link Love which we can afford to share! Does Robert DoFollow all links on his Blog, including signature links?
- Igor The Troll יִצְחָק
If your reader is an Internet Explorer 6 or below user, they will probably won't be back for a while because IE 6 or below doesn't support tabs.
- Didik Wicaksono
A lot of people don't like having a new window open automatically. I almost always right click and open in a new tab myself. I like to have control over where a page will open.
- Trisha
Voyagerfan5761 Google is crap! Unless you are a developer or an SEO you will not be able to find a donkey's ass with your eyes open! I hit 90% Wikipedia when I Google. the other 5% I have to work my ass off to find relevant information! Remaining 5% is Spam that sits at the top, including Zlob Trojan Malware domains and redirect Viagra!
- Igor The Troll יִצְחָק
Yeah we've found that opening links in new windows or tabs is more annoying to people than it's worth. Personally I do a lot of right-clicking and opening in a new tab. It's a good habit to be in.
- Tris Hussey
I've been on FriendFeed but I didn't actively use it---I just thought of it as an aggregator of Stumbles, Google Reader shares, posts, Twitters, etc.
- Arachne Jericho
Just found FriendFeed today thx to Darren Rowse mention
- Chipper Dave
Just joined today through Darren's Twitter tweet.

I have had ff for about 3 months but did not use it until the rooms.
- chris shouse
I just joined today from Darren's tweet.
- Shelly Weiss
I just joined up a couple of hours ago. Initially the FriendFeed format didn't appeal to me. However, the inclusion of rooms changed that. There was now a sense of purpose to FriendFeed rather then simply a collection of feeds.
- Riayn
I'm a first timer. There's been a lot of pimping of FF this week, with Twitter's recent outages. I'm still trying to see what the advantages are, but that will take time.
- Andre Kibbe
First timer here. Liking what I see so far. FriendFeed's only down side is there may be too much connectivity for folks...
- James Kennison
I joined friday, still learning the ropes
- R. Ferguson
Had an account since October or November of last year, actually. Just didn't use it until this year.
- Voyagerfan5761
I've used it for a while but it was basically just sharing my Tweets. In the past few weeks I've realised how useful commenting is, and this Rooms addition combined with Twhirl may mean I never have to join a forum to ask questions again! ;)
- Caspar Aremi
I fail to see how creating more tweets is going to help Twitter when their main problem at the moment is that their system can not handle the volume of tweets already being generated.
