I learned from @leolaporte yesterday that it's supposed to be pronounceud PAHS-terous, as in preposterous, as opposed to POST-erous, as I'd been saying it. Is that correct? Do they state that anywhere on the site?
- Joey Gibson
I presume like always you can't tell us anything about what's brewing at Posterous
- Pavan
Tech reporters should need to do their homework before writing headlines like this: http://mashable.com/2009... this is the worst article I've ever seen Mashable write.
- Robert Scoble
Mashable should pull that article and do a better job of editing before they publish.
- Hugh Briss
Hugh: my problem is 70% with the headline, but 30% with the lack of effort to understanding FriendFeed.
- Robert Scoble
Robert, i know you are not the biggest Wave fan yet, but have you tried looking into the public waves? Just add: public@a.gwave.com as a contact, then define a search for example "with:public@a.gwave.com" and you get the full stream. We have a fun discussion over at Hacker News: http://www.victusspiritus.com/2009... I guess you probably know about it already :)
- Bastian
Yes, Public Waves are interesting. But far too geeky. If Mashable writers complain they don't get FriendFeed well, then, they have no hope of getting Google Wave.
- Robert Scoble
If your going to compare something to something else at least try and give me a grid or something to show the features differences. Cnet's prize fights or Louis Gray's excellent article on twitter clients http://blog.louisgray.com/2009... are examples of how it should be done.
- Luke Kilpatrick
totally agree, the problem with Cliqset is that they will now be always labelled as a friendfeed clone.. people should move away from putting a clone stamp on services and let them be their own value.
- Jaap Willem
RT @Christina Warren: Oh FriendFeed Mafia. Calling people who don't get your service dumb is a real way to win friends and influence people
- Wins Fern
Wins: another inaccuracy. No one ever called her "dumb." I called her article the worst Mashable has ever written. But they are not the same thing.
- Robert Scoble
I bet it would be pretty easy to find worse Mashable articles. Given the site's longevity and frequency of publishing, they are no doubt out there. But it would make sense that if you were set up to present a case as an authority figure/journalist, you would have a good idea of the services being compared, and that's not the case here.
- Louis Gray
BTW, thanks Luke. I didn't see your link until now, but I agree! :)
- Louis Gray
Louis: y ou are probably right but this is one I know a bit about so can be authoritative on pointing it out. I don't remember anything with a more incorrect headline on Mashable, though.
- Robert Scoble
The Zune is getting good reviews, Windows 7 has been getting rave reviews for months leading up to it's release, and Xbox still seems to be doing well. Nope, don't see where you're going with this Robert. :D
- MarkCarras
actually I disagree.. I have been to training events for their mobile team in the last month and very very few of the young developers were there. They are a hollow shell of who they used to be and now one I know in the startup world here in Seattle has any desire to work there. I think perhaps part of it is cultural, as their work force has aged they have become more and more...

Yes, Zune and Bing are big moves in a good direction
- Leigh Marriner
I think MS is moving in the right direction. Aren't there still EU troubles?
- Mike Lewis
If they push out WinMo 7 by the end of this year and make it a free upgrade then I'd give them Company of the year with the release of Windows 7 and the new Mobile OS.
- Santa CW™
Would credit Yahoo's failures more than Microsoft's success for everything that happened relating to Yahoo.
- Ed Millard
As much as I am loathe to say it, don't forget to include the drastic improvements made to IE in the list of things MS has done lately.
- Curtiss Grymala
Agree on the whole. I always find these categories a little artificial: Really "Forrester-speak". :) I think the recommendations are the most interesting. I'd make a separate post out of that.
- Meryn Stol
You say it yourself: "What’s interesting isn’t this vision for the future, but what it holds in store for brands, " . I'd like these recommendations to be fleshed out with concrete first steps to take. Doesn't have to be more than links to relevant resources.
- Meryn Stol
Meryn The recommendations are fleshed out in the actual reports. Our clients (brands) have access to see them.
- Jeremiah Owyang
Hmm ok... Then I'll need to get the details elsewhere I guess. :)
- Meryn Stol
Interesting categorization of the development into eras. Any consideration to the impact of scale on the 5th era? Just as a recent example with Facebook, their format evolution was not well received by what is not an insignificant number of members, and yet the reality is - that change - negative impact not withstanding is not rolling back.
- Patrick Boegel
There will be a give and take between communities and brands. The thing is, Facebook doesn't have a competitive alternative that users could go to. In my report, we suggest that active communities could define specs for products, and bid MULTIPLE companies to build it.
- Jeremiah Owyang
I completely understand that Jeremiah, just wondering if the nature of scale impacted or perhaps better said impacts the thought process for very complex long term brand relationships, ie Health Insurance, Financial Services, a college/university choice, where consversation and user invovlement can be complicated. Very interested in the full report either way. Thx.
- Patrick Boegel
good stuff Jeremiah, enjoyed and some good thought provokers there for the future
- Richard Binhammer
Nice paper but really expensive for young people. $750 means $41 for page.
- Alp
Great information, understanding the future's potential is more important than ever on the social web.
- Maria Reyes-McDavis
Interesting, but very general and hard to apply. I see companies more as å provide of tools/stage for conversation, aka the gold rush mining vs selling tools
- Anders Dahlberg
Alp, Many of Forrester's clients are large brands who have a subscription. We're still sharing a great deal on this blog, and have given the report to bloggers to cover, so there's value to be had there.
- Jeremiah Owyang
Jeremiah (and the team), a great piece of work and, I imagine, a labour of both love and loathing at times! I have been very interested in this area as I have looked at the shift in skills to deliver social media activity changes from one of basic coding knowledge to much more human, interactive skills.
- Paul Fabretti
Fantastic article! I found it SO intriguing that I've even printed it out!
- J. D. Ebberly
"How Brands Should Prepare" is a great bit of information. Jeremiah, it would be nice (i'd be reading) if you expanded in future blog posts about the "How Brands Should Prepare".
- frank barry
That's likely to be a research report I'm thinking about writing Frank
- Jeremiah Owyang
Probably correct in assuming that most online social networks will neither spawn nor solidify to the point of being considered ‘affinity groups’ with the level of cohesion, unified budgetary authority or organized implementation capability of NGOs, churches, or employee aggregations. Even in the era of social commerce. I hope I’m wrong.
- A Mitchell
Great post, understanding the future's potential is more important than ever on the social web.

"Celebrity photographer Annie Leibovitz has won an extension on a $24 million loan in a financial dispute that threatened her rights to her famous images, the two sides said in a joint statement Friday. Leibovitz and the company, Art Capital Group, said the 59-year-old photographer had been given more time to repay the loan. The loan's deadline passed on Tuesday, but both parties had continued to work to try to resolve the dispute. The statement did not specify the date of the loan extension. "In these challenging times I am appreciative to Art Capital for all they have done to resolve this matter and for their cooperation and continued support," Leibovitz said in the statement. Her spokesman Matthew Hiltzik declined to comment on specifics of the deal."

That's what open microblogger should be. Twitter should be an implementation of that, not the other way around. It should be decentralized OR they should get their act together OR they should be purchased by someone who will.
- Louis Gray
love the background Louis...the number of people that must have tried clicking on your dock...(including me). :)
- Zee.
TweetDeck is still working for me though

503s have been driving me nuts, too. FF seems to have enough of a user base to keep us amused without getting bogged down/timing out/crashing.

people are looting stores around the world in protest

I don't know about you guys, but I constantly have the phrase "We're having an earthqu-" typed into my Twitter box so I can be first to post it just by hitting return.

Jesse, I'm trying to pick on the framework underneath. But, I actually don't know if they're still messing with Rails.
- Jason Nunnelley
Twitter's problem is an issue of priority, if you consider their downtime a failure. I don't. I think it's working out just fine for them. The more they go down, the more people realize they're addicted and continue to use the service. They've almost proven downtime doesn't hurt growth.
- Jason Nunnelley
Jason, I think that's a mistake for them to have that attitude. I use Twitter less and less the more they go down, and the more of these shenanigans they keep pulling, both as a developer and user
- Jesse Stay
Jesse, not to be a jerk (and I know I'm a broken record), but I assure you they don't care.
- Jason Nunnelley
Jason, that's okay - I'm a broken record in trying to get them to care. :-) I do know they're listening though (I've been on a panel with Doug Williams and Ryan Sarver, and chat with Alex and others frequently via e-mail), and they'll apply the things that make the most sense to them, or at least that they're allowed to implement by management and their investors.
- Jesse Stay
My hope is my "complaints" are constructive though. I've included a lot of information and suggestions with those complaints, so they can take them as they please - it's not my business in the end, but I'll share the knowledge I have at least.
- Jesse Stay
Maybe I should use the Twitter page less and TweetDeck or Seesmic more...
- Dennis Jernberg
Dennis, it's an API vs. web interface toss up. There's no doubt their biggest problem is with the web interface, but I've had API fail also. So long as you just want to read tweets, the API seems to be the best route, meaning Seesmic/TweetDeck, etc. seem to work best.
- Jason Nunnelley
Can't. Went from the panel to a dinner with storage geeks from VMworld. (it's my other hat)

Did you get on the suggested user list? :-)
- Robert Scoble
Robert, I didn't ask. All I did was congratulate Ev on his new baby, pass along the business card and say that obviously used both Blogger and Twitter. Real simple. :)
- Louis Gray
Look! I caught a Scoble thread before it had 400 comments!
- Fa La La La Lindsay
Maybe you did and just haven't noticed yet, like everyone else who has done the upgrade ;-)
- Andrew Leyden
Andrew: that's funny! Lindsay: heh, don't worry, engagement is down here.
- Robert Scoble
I'm totally diappointed. I thought you're an early adopter! :P
- imabonehead
I'm a little disappointed I paid money for it. There's really not much difference. It's a service pack, that's all.
- Jesse Stay
I want to be the last person on FriendFeed to do it.
- Rob Sterling
Yeah! This is the perfect way to show that you're a rebel!

I'm currently recommending people wait to install Snow Leopard. It breaks too many things and there's no apparent benefit (unless you need a specific new feature like Exchange support in Apple Mail).
- Leo Laporte
Longest I have gone without installing a major upgrade.. (after working at Apple for many a year) and unfortunately not very excited about it either.. Over heard people at the coffee shop voice their disappointment as well.. Is this a poor excuse for an upgrade? wheres all the amazing new features for our main desktop platform? Apple pouring focus into mobile and letting the core slip?
- Tyson
Oy vey. It just blows my mind that people are complaining about the lack of wow factor in an upgrade that has been, from near the start, touted as an under-the-hood upgrade.
- Akiva Moskovitz
All I've been hearing about snow leopard is that it breaks stuff.
- Rahsheen ™, Coach Rah
What I've been telling people is this: there's more to a major OS upgrade than just a bunch of desktop eye candy. Things are going to break even if it is an Apple product. Luckily for me, the only things that have broken have been very minor (Glims and Privoxy). Thus, the caveat that should haunt the release of any OS upgrade: unless you like living on the edge, just wait until the...

- Akiva Moskovitz
so we have to wait another year for the next "major upgrade" ?? Im sure Apple have a load of features they could have released? Apple can dictate tech trends.. Then I wonder are they actually slowing things down.. then I wonder is facebook also guilty of this by buying friendfeed?
- Tyson
Akiva: it sounds like Snow Leopard is Apple's Vista.
- Robert Scoble
As they say after a team's disappointing hockey season, It's a rebuilding year.
- Micah Wittman
I have all Mac's in my studio and only started with one, it's really fast...
- Jade Y. Gunver
Vista took 5 years to produce, it overpromised, underdelivered and is cludgy on computers made 3 years later and costs hundreds of dollars. Snow Leopard took 2 years to produce, promised very little, costs $30, and delivers speed, refinement, and stability and makes 3 year old laptops run faster
- El Pub
And yes: I'm a mac user and a red wings fan so...
- El Pub
Robert, if you lose your geek cred for not installing Snow Leopard right away, then something is wrong with the geek community.
- Eric Geller
oh well....I won't remove the geek credentials for that. In fact Id say they are stronger :-)
- Richard Binhammer
Are "geek credentials" really useful in order to be considered as a professional?
- Thierry R. Andriamirado
from email
I haven't installed it either. From all I've read and heard, it sounds like a maintenance upgrade that you have to pay for. I'll wait for 10.6.1 and give all the apps a chance to update to the latest version. I think I'm more excited about the Windows 7 upgrade. :)
