@loudmouthman Microsoft has 320 million users on Hotmail and Messenger. Facebook only has 100 million. Never count Microsoft out.
For now. :-) - Alex Williams
As much as people give Microsoft a hard time. they are still here and as strong as ever. Microsoft is not going away anytime soon. The numbers prove it. - Michael McGimpsey
They looked tired and jaded at Enterprise 2.0 - Dennis Howlett from twhirl
Man, we all know MSN is an empire... - Jack
does anybody have independent studies of whether hotmail, or yahoomail, or gmail actually makes money? - wilsonng
The hosted version of Sharepoint / Exchange is in beta as a service from MS. It will make them billions and establish them almost instantly as the most important "cloud" provider for businesses. - Soulhuntre from twhirl
does anyone consider the yearly growth rate? - Axel Quack
Can you comment on Amanda Chapel http://tinyurl.com/4ptxga - Igor The Troll יִצְחָק
And 300 of those 320 million are spammers. - TranceMist
Igor: it's a dude named Brian in Chicago who writes that Blog. - Robert Scoble
320 M is truly a big number.i wonder how the geographic distribution looks like. - Davide D'Incau from fftogo
How many of those users are active? I have a Hotmail account, but I never use it anymore. - William Beem
Those people are not early, medium or late adopters though, those are people who don't want to embrace anything new... Those users don't typically migrate to better services - why would they be interested in a social network? - Rich
email is a very private matter -- we'll see how well msft does at converting that to a real user relationship. doubtful - Jason Goldberg
People also still put gasoline in their cars... ;-) - Mary Anne Davis
How many of these are throw away accounts or simply abandoned? Still an impressive number but well inflated. - AJ Kohn
AJ: none: those are all accounts which have been used in past 30 days. - Robert Scoble
i still keep my hotmail/msn just so i dont lose contact with some people. its a hard magnet to avoid - Ruben Llibre
I have a bunch of old account running about .. Thankfully they all forward to my Gmail Accoint :) - Tyler (Chacha) from twhirl
This is a good example of an audience's understanding of what the picture looks like our of their immediate demographic. People have a hard time realizing what's outside of their own 'fishtank' so to speak. There are people that like MSFT, there are people that love using their online services, there are people that truly would rather keep things IE/Live/Office/Windows because it's what... more... - No Name from twhirl
Thankfully I don't use Hotmail as my Main Email - Tyler (Chacha) from twhirl
Robert: Really? so we're talking 320MM ACTIVE accounts, plus xMM of lapsed/inactive. Interesting. Thanks for clarifying. - AJ Kohn
I had four accounts , each created when I forgot the password of previous one, I use none now, only gmail. - sirishkumar
I very seriously doubt these would be active or real accounts. Plenty of dead ones or ones used for spamming. Ask them if they can give you a number of accounts that were logged onto in the last 3 months once a week. EDIT, ok, I did not read your article, shame on me, so they have active users. Still don't see how chat accounts can be seen as weapons. - Gerard van Schip
Why did Yahoo self-destruct in regard to Microsoft? Although it is a minority opinion (which I have detailed previously) Yahoo may in fact not need Microsoft to the degree that many think. - Alex Hammer
What is Microsoft's growth though, as compared to Facebook's? - Jesse Stay from twhirl

Fax, Petr. :-) - Kol Tregaskes
even a flat cat... faxes just can't handle the hair. You'd have to shave the cat first, else the hair will burn and stick to the drum... a mess! (I am extrapolating from transparencies, mind, i don't have access to a cat to test) - Iphigenie
Hehe, Joelle. This is now tied for the 'likes' top stop. One more then, hehe. :-) - Kol Tregaskes
Hehe, Greg. Blimey! Erm, is that not far from 500 likes now? ;-) - Kol Tregaskes

Longest thread ever: Variegated miscellany. Now used for status updates.
In 1986, on Usenet, the "Longest thread ever" post debuted. It was kept going continuously for over eight years. How long, I wonder, could a FriendFeed post be kept going? This is just a place for random posts to go. Think of it as a long slow chat room that will never die. Topics vary. - Stephen Mack
Sure, why not? This one. This one... FOREVER. - Stephen Mack
Not very long. Unfortunately, unless they've fixed it, threads tend to disappear from the friendfeed radar after a certain length and length of time. Even ffholic stops cataloging them properly. - Scoble, Alex Scoble
But if I or others kept bumping it... - Stephen Mack
You're a crazy man, Stephen Mack. - Kate Schmidt
Step 1: "like" this post. - Steve and 4 other people
Comment now to get in on the first screen of what will be the historic longest FF post ever... - Stephen Mack
I want to be apart of history. - Dario Gomez
You can never be apart from history, because it's all around you every second. - Stephen Mack
@Kate, I think by "crazy" you mean "awesome" :) - Georgia
Thank you, Georgia, but I would put myself in the crazy category sooner than the awesome category. - Stephen Mack
I hath determined that posts with images get more comments. Can you edit this with some cute graphic? I'd suggest something along the lines of http://blog.wired.com/photos... - Steve and 4 other people
You are correct, Steve, but it's now too late, the train has left the station and it's unstoppable. The best I can do is add ASCII graphics to the initial post and the first comment. - Stephen Mack
Georgia and Stephen - I think you both are under the miss-assumption that crazy can not also be awesome. - Rachel Lea Fox
Crazy is to awesome as fish is to bicycle? - Stephen Mack
A fish on a bicycle is totally crazy awesome! - Rachel Lea Fox
An orange, because a vest has no sleeves. - Stephen Mack
Continuing to edit the title is a nifty idea. I'm sure there all kinds of clever things that can be put there on a Friday afternoon. - Steve and 4 other people
I hope so. Because keeping this thread alive is my newest hobby. - Stephen Mack
I posted on long threads in my comments here: http://friendfeed.com/e... . Best one: "Whoa. A forum dedicated to Rush (yes, that one http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki... ) has a thread starting with "I'm Bored" which is up to 412,374 posts http://www.rushmessageboard.com/cpmb... Back-story here: http://www.urch.com/forums... " - Micah
Long motortrend thread: http://friendfeed.com/e... - Micah
You're being beaten by Alex's post about questions that don't require an answer. Step it up, people! - Steve and 4 other people
Domo-kun is awesomesauce! - Scoble, Alex Scoble
Define longest thread? Most posts? Just the length of text shown down the page? - Dario Gomez
Or is it time? In which case how often do we need to post to this thread to keep it alive? - Dario Gomez
Now with crazy grafix! ⨌ ⤨ ✌ ❦❧❣ ☠⌨ a҉w҉e҉s҉o҉m҉e҉!҉ - Steve and 4 other people
I'd say "longest" in this case means the thread that has the largest # of comments. - Stephen Mack
Micah, those are indeed some very very long threads. - Stephen Mack
You should add subjects to the title and change them now and again. give us something to discuss, and as soon as one subject starts to get boring, change it. - Rachel Lea Fox
Good idea -- I was trying to a little bit (bacon, bel air, xzibit so far) but will be more explicit. - Stephen Mack
This party sucks. I'm going home. - Scoble, Alex Scoble
Drive carefully Alex, and tip your wait staff. What are you all doing this weekend? - Stephen Mack
Going to a party in the city tonight. House chores tomorrow, and then Beer league softball sunday. - Dario Gomez
Visiting family in Crystal River, maybe see some manatees, and finally finishing our never-ending kitchen cabinet update. - adf
Random bump, 'cause this needs to become # 1. - Dario Gomez
6:30am Saturday is a perfectly reasonable time for two small children to wake up and want to go to the zoo. Absolutely. Anyone know any 24-hour zoos? - Stephen Mack
Watching the cat attack my husband's feet while he tries to fix the armchair. - Kate Schmidt
cat attacks are awesome!!!! good plans. - Rachel Lea Fox
no 24 hour zoos I know of, unless you build on in your house. my sister seems to be working on one. SF zoo has some great baby animals now though! - Rachel Lea Fox

Heh, best part is that we are totally doing the ceremony in front of a small lake tomorrow :) but the risk is low. - George S.
Why did I eat so many tacos? - Kate Schmidt
What kind of tacos were they, and how many did you have? - Stephen Mack
Just ground beef tacos, but I spiced them from scratch, not a mix. I had two and some homemade refried beans. I've had a tummy ache for a couple of days, though, so I haven't eaten much other than tea and toast lately. The delicious spicy tacos were a bit shocking to my tum. - Kate Schmidt
Talking about tacos, I think I'll be having some after my softball game today. - Dario Gomez
You should just post your status message updates here instead of to twitter. Who needs a whole website when you've got a single post on FF? - Steve and 4 other people
I believe the current FF leader is: http://beta.friendfeed.com/ffunder... - Steve and 4 other people
1625 comments, that'll take a while to beat. No problem. Slow and steady. - Stephen Mack
Man it was hot this weekend. How hot was it? It was so hot, my cat had to lie under my _______. - Stephen Mack
You will have to explain the match game. - Dario Gomez
1625 comments over 8 years? I don't think it'll be that hard.- oops missed that was for FF. Sorry. I think we can do it. - Dario Gomez
Of course we can do it. As for The Match Game: You are part of a panel, filling in the blank in that sentence, and trying to match the pre-written answer. - Stephen Mack
It's too hot out. :( - Dario Gomez
Isn't today a special day? - Steve and 4 other people
I know tomorrow is a special day. - Steve and 4 other people
Well it's a spare the air day. But I bet there's another reason the day is special. - Dario Gomez
The thing I hate most about hot weather is not being able to sleep well at night. TOO HOT!!! Can someone bring back the late-90's Bay Area weather? I like my 67 degree evenings, please! - Steve and 4 other people
Agreed. apperently it's suppose to rain this weekend as well. It's so wrong. It's not suppose to rain until September at the earliest. - Dario Gomez
I think I just melted. - Kate Schmidt
I think we should discuss other threads in this threads. Like, how it sucks that Stephen has pink eye (get better soon.) And how now is the time scam Georgia. :) - Dario Gomez
Hey Georgia -- I talked to the doctor and apparently the only way my eye is going to get better is if you buy me some special $83 medicine. Please help! - Stephen Mack
Ok, thanks for the heads up Dario, now I'll know to say no to you! - Georgia
And yes Stephen, since it's your birthday, I'll buy you $83 eye drops :) - Georgia
When have I ever asked for anything? :) - Dario Gomez
Hey, why isn't anyone posting to this? Post your excuse for not posting. :) - Dario Gomez
ummm... I haven't seen it pop up lately! - Rachel Lea Fox
My excuse? Pink eye! - Stephen Mack
excuses excuses Stephen! ;) - Rachel Lea Fox

I'm going to check out Bill's latest play. It's the king and I playing in palo alto. - Dario Gomez
People should go see the play. The singers are excellent! (ok I'm biased, my roommates girlfriend is in it, even so trust me it's good.) - Dario Gomez
Ah, glad you updated -- got a link for tix? - Stephen Mack
HEY YOU, LIKE THIS THREAD! - Steve and 4 other people
I can't decide, do I like it cool and breezy, or hot and sunny? They both actually have their good points. I like the hot weather because it's pool weather. I like it cool and breezy because it's more comfortable at mid-day. I like it when it's hot enough to eat dinner outside, but I don't like it so hot that it's still 80F in my bedroom at midnight. - Steve and 4 other people
Link for tickets to king and I http://www.paplayers.org/tickets... - Dario Gomez
I think what we need for success here is for .*Scoble to like this thread. Then you're set! - Steve and 4 other people
We do have a Scoble who liked this thread! ... then he left. - Stephen Mack
Rain on Saturday in the bay area... - Stephen Mack
Isn't that what you said last week? - Steve and 4 other people
I said no more rain until September. I might have been wrong. - Stephen Mack
I know we need rain, but I always think it's strange when there's any rain between May 1st and September 1st. - Dario Gomez
I couldn't handle Seattle weather. Got enough of that growing up in England. - Stephen Mack
YAY rain! My garden will appreciate the rain! - Georgia
New topic (4/29, 11:45am): Have you ever broken a limb? If so, when and how? - Stephen Mack
Yes, my left arm, at age 10, while tight rope walking the parallel bars at the playground behind my grandparents house. I went back and forth 10 times before falling on my arm. AND it was my grandfather's birthday. Also fractured my shoulder blade, not sure that really counts as a limb though. (edit - didn't break the shoulder blade, I must have been having a brain fart moment) - Rachel Lea Fox
Never broken, but I did chip a chunk of bone off of my elbow, to me that counts! - Georgia
Georgia, how did you do that? - Stephen Mack
Gymnastics. I fell forward off of the uneven bars and put my arms out to catch myself. In doing so I dislocated my left elbow, and it chipped the bone when it was relocating itself... OUCH! - Georgia
eeek, sounds painful. I broke three fingers in my right hand playing basketball in college, but otherwise have not broken any bones. - Stephen Mack
This lame in comparison. I broke my toe jumping off the top bunk of my bunk bed when I was 7 or so. The bad part was my parents didn't believe me for a couple of days. The worst part, all the doctor did was tape it to the toe next to it and I was fine. - Dario Gomez
No other limb breakers? - Stephen Mack
no, sorry - grant fox
Yeah, sorry, I'm fracture-free, so no good childhood stories here. - Steve and 4 other people
Sorry to change subject, but who's watching wolverine this weekend? - Dario Gomez
I saw it on Sunday. Awful, just awful. I'll write a review for my blog, but I had low expectations that were not met. Bad special effects, bad story, bad acting -- this movie fizzled on every level for me. - Stephen Mack
So, the question is: Was Wolverine worse than X-Men 3? Now *that* was a bad movie. :) - Steve and 4 other people
I liked Xmen three. - Dario Gomez
I didn't think X-Men 3 was very good. But I think Wolverine is far worse. On the 0-100 scale, X-Men 3 I'd give like a 38 or so, and Wolverine a 23. - Stephen Mack
Wolverine was ok to me. Not great, but entertaining.... - Georgia
so how many people have already lost the summer blockbuster competition? - Steve and 4 other people
No one yet! It could all go downhill from here... - Stephen Mack
I already lost. Wolverine will not be rated well. :( Oh well next year. Wolverine was a good action flick with the required elements to try to explain what happened to wolverine. So I agree with Georgia's statement, not great but entertaining. - Dario Gomez
I'll be seeing Star Trek this weekend with my parents. I have to say, of all the upcoming summer releases, this is the one I'm most looking forward to. - Stephen Mack
YAY! I want to go this weekend as well! - Georgia
Was glad to take my parents to see it, definitely enjoyed it a lot. Despite some plot quibbles (and what would a trek movie be without those?), it's an extremely well-made and likable movie with a charismatic cast and plenty of summer popcorn thrills. - Stephen Mack
Agreed! I'm not a Star Trek person, and I really enjoyed the movie. It's just a good summer action film! - Georgia
I didn't get a chance to see it:( - Dario Gomez
I loved it. i hope to see it again, though next weekend i'm going to see wolverine, even though its not supposed to be that good. - Rachel Lea Fox
Dario, just go see it! Rachel, I really was disappointed in Wolverine, but it has its moments. Set your expectations low -- no, lower -- no, lower than that. A bit lower. Not THAT low! There. Right there. - Stephen Mack
Wolverine was good. Just think of it as a mindless action flick and it'll be fine. - Dario Gomez
So who's going to see Angels & Demons this weekend? - Stephen Mack
I was thinking about it... is it supposed to be good? - Georgia
I hate this thread and having to click 'more' to open it and then scroll down 10000 lines. Hiding. :( - Ken Gidley
Georgia, it has 51% positive reviews on RottenTomatoes, so, no, sadly it doesn't look to be very good. Ken, I hear you on that. It is a bit annoying. But for science, I will soldier on to make this the longest thread in FF history (no matter how long it takes). - Stephen Mack
So, did anyone see Angels & Demons? - Stephen Mack
Seriously? After the DaVinci Code, why would I? DaVinci was even bad by my "airplane movie" standards, which are pretty low. - Steve and 4 other people
I thought DaVinci was passable. Tom Hanks is usually watchable, and there was interesting scenery if nothing else. I'm very surprised that Angels & Demons beat Star Trek last weekend (http://www.the-numbers.com/charts..., $46 million to $43 million). - Stephen Mack
Woah, new Terminator only got 31% on Rotten Tomatoes? (http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m...) I knew it'd wouldn't score high, but didn't expect it to be THAT low. I'll see it tonight anyway though... - Stephen Mack
I'm glad you posted to this. I haven't been able to find. And I will reiterate. Lower expectations makes for better movie experience. (well at least I hope so.) - Dario Gomez
Why isn't anyone posting to this thread? - Dario Gomez
Good question! Anyone going to see UP this week? Maybe I should switch topics. Of the summer blockbusters, so far I've seen Wolverine, Star Trek, and Terminator, but not Angels & Demons (3 for 4). I give Star Trek a 4/5, Termination a 3.5/5, and Wolverine a 2/5. - Stephen Mack
I will hopefully see UP next week, I'm really looking forward to it! - Georgia
It would be great if this were at the Pruneyard's Diaper Days/Nights. Then I could try to take the kid(s). Check http://www.cameracinemas.com/diaper... Last week was Star Trek. - Steve and 4 other people
How do you like the Diaper showings? Is it possible to really watch the movie? - Stephen Mack
It depends on the movie and the crowd. Sometimes it works, and other times not. We went to see Horton Hears a Who there, and it was a bit chaotic, because it caters to kids, so there were lots of toddlers there. It could be said that it's a livingroom experience, (lights on, kids talking) so it's not a huge win over just Netflix, but I think it's good practice for the kids to go to a real theater. You should give it a try and report back. :) - Steve and 4 other people
Pixar's Up grabs 98% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes, beating Star Trek's 95%! http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m... -- wow, some amazing reviews there. I didn't expect it to score this well with critics. Why do I ever doubt you, Pixar. - Stephen Mack
Wow! I didn't expect that either! Go UP!! - Rachel Lea Fox
I better go leave negative feedback so I can still win the contest :) - Georgia
It only counts well-known critics, Georgia, so you'd have to set up an alternative career and corpus of reviews first! - Stephen Mack
Has anyone seen up! yet? - Dario Gomez
Anyone paying attention to this thread? - Dario Gomez
So glad to see "Up" took #1 for a second weekend in a row, and that "Land of the Lost" was beat out by "The Hangover." Saw Up, last night, it's very very good. - Stephen Mack
I heard "Land of the Lost" will be the "My Greek Wedding" of 2009....;) - Roger N
And no.. that last comment has not been influenced by other outside factors such as the "Movie Blockbuster" contest.... - Roger N
It's always possible that LotL could a huge international hit. Will Ferrell is bankable overseas. - Stephen Mack
didn't want to start a new thread, but saw a link about thread killing. I seem to be running at 39%http://chrispeoples.com/ffthrea... does that seem high? - Dario Gomez
Dario, 39% is highish among the people who responded, but very close to mine. - Stephen Mack
I'm glad you commented I thought I had killed this thread. But now... oh never mind. :0) - Dario Gomez
No, this thread will never ever die, sorry. It will take its slow but sure way to infinity. In 2086, when FriendFeed runs in our brains, it'll still get bumps for historical interest. - Stephen Mack
So what movie is a MUST see for this summer? - Jannifer @wordsforliving
So far, UP and Star Trek are tied for me as must-sees. - Stephen Mack
Yeah, I'll second that, Stephen. - Scoble, Alex Scoble
Doesn't look good for Year One: 20% on RT. (http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m...) -- "Has neither wit nor wisdom nor charm nor beauty." -- Stephen Wittier - Stephen Mack
Is our attempt at longest thread ever dead? - Dario Gomez
No, I just wanted to see if anyone else would bump it :) It'll never die. - Stephen Mack
So what's the status of this thread with the news that Facebook will be taking over the joint? - Dario Gomez
This thread will still be the longest thread ever. Guaranteed. Will never stop. Never stop. And with the new "comment at the bottom" link, it's easier to use than ever. - Stephen Mack
GI Joe. Worth it, or does it Destro-y even more Saturday morning cartoons? - Neal Krummell
Neal -- I'm gonna pass on GI Joe. If the RT reviews were higher, I might have checked it out. But for now I'm waiting for District 9 and Inglourious Basterds. - Stephen Mack
OK, wrapping up summer movies (http://www.zeigen.com/blog...). Now it's time for Fall TV (http://www.zeigen.com/blog...). Anyone watch Leno last night? What did you think? - Stephen Mack
I thought it was interesting. I don't hate him like a lot of people on FF seem to. But I will not be spending much time watching either. The new set is amazing. It did seem to go by quickly, and the 2 chair/no desk setup makes it a lot more intimate...just in time for Leno to ask Kanye about what his dead mom thinks of him interupting Taylor Swift's acceptance speech, watch Kanye flounder for words, then see him immediately go get gangsta rap on stage. What's not to like? - Josh Haley
Surprised this thread is still going - maybe it really us the longest thread... - Rich
Rich, it's not there yet (with only 160 comments) -- some threads here on FF in the last 30 days have almost 1k comments. But I won't let it die, never. - Stephen Mack
It just needs to be the longest lasting thread right? - Dario Gomez
Dario, I think we decided at the beginning it had to have the most comments. If it's just oldest-continuously bumped thread, then someone could bump an older thread and snatch victory away from us. - Stephen Mack
I think Leno was a bore the other night....even with Kanye on it! I think Leno is going to be the bottom of the barrel in TV ratings for the 10pm time slot. - Bonnie Foster
He doesn't have to do well to make money for the network, though, given how cheap his show is to make compared to, say, an episode of Law & Order. - Stephen Mack from iPhone
So how is everyone who reads this thread doing? - Dario Gomez
Any one see the prisoner sunday? - Dario Gomez
------------------- 2010-May-12 --------------- I'm resurrecting this longest thread ever and will use it for status updates that I don't want to have in a whole new post. Feel free to join in. Also: Feel free to hide. Here's my first status update: Bleaugh, I'm starting to not feel well. Achy joints and headache. Will go to bed early. Long for Lucozade. - Stephen Mack

It was me on June 8th... Kind of weird, haven't signed on since then, and this thread is at the top! - Rich
Hey Dario, thanks for bringing it back! I've thought about this thread a bit but wasn't sure if it was practical to keep bumping it. I suppose people can hide it if they hate it. - Stephen Mack
And Rich, that is weird. You and Dario must share a psychic connection. - Stephen Mack

Think Progress » Right-wing protesters at GOP rally display prominent sign tying health care to the Holocaust.
"ThinkProgress’ Lee Fang snapped this photograph of a prominent sign being displayed at today’s GOP anti-health care rally. It’s unclear whether this sign is one of the many being handed out by Americans for Prosperity, the corporate front group sponsoring today’s rally. The sign reads “National Socialist Health Care: Dachau, Germany – 1945”:" - Vampire Hunter DYSP from Bookmarklet
The Hitler angle on health care is the most hilarious, I think. Because the main reason he's so infamous is because of the inefficient health care system he crea... oh wait, that's not it. - Lo
So making it easier for people to get health care is just like killing them. Right. - John (bird whisperer)
This disgusts me. Is there no education about the holocaust in America? - Rich
Yes, but education doesn't spread like talking points. Near as I can tell from my right-wing family members, Hitler a) created a government-run health program, and b) used the word 'socialist,' therefore c) he and Barack Obama are the same, thus d) concentration camps are the inevitable outcome of providing health care to the uninsured. At least, I think that's their logic. - Lo
That is so foul...for SO many reasons. - Prosey BUTTONS!

Irrational devotion to anything does tend to incite rancor in me. Of course, I'm also not a fan of people who summarily dismiss what seems rational to me as being completely irrational and insane, either. - Victor Ganata
So far, people believe at 44% that apple have the more annoying fan boys followed by play station at 12%, xbox at 9%, IE and windows both at 7% there is 135 votes. - snipe123
I hate people who hate other people for enjoying and standing behind their favorite products. Don't be mad just because you want such neutral opinions on everything that no one can express their deep fondness of anything. :3 - Devin Gaughan

What the heck is 'brown sauce'?
photo.jpg
It's brown sauce - tastes like um. Brown. I don't like it that much. The branded version is HP Sauce, which is loved my everyone in the UK apart from me it seems. - Rich
I can't help but think it is made of pureed ups delivery guys. Thanks for clearing it up! - Joe Beda from iPhone

It's the same as steak sauce I think, usually put inside bacon butties here in the UK :) - Charley M

I think I saw an episode of 'Dirty Jobs' that involved brown sauce. ;-) - Herb Hernandez
For that matter, what is salad cream? - COMPLICATED MR. NOODLE
Brown sauce is the only possible condiment for bacon. Get real US people!! - David Semeria
It's made out of feces. - Dave Winer
I've heard about this Brown Sauce for years. Now it's time to try some - I've just ordered some from Amazon: http://bit.ly/2laHhs They even have Salad Cream and I guess I'll have to try that too. - Drew
I did not think FreindFeeders would be so closed minded. Brown sauce is the blue collar term for a version of what Canadians call Steak Sauce. Usually it's a blend of molasses, vinegar, dates, sugar and spices. In the UK "HP" is the favoured brand. Personally I find it unpleasant as it's dominated by a vinegar-y taste. It's competitor , Daddies, is far smoother. - Liam Hemmings
Oh yeah and salad cream....well as long as I can remember that's been a market dominated by Heinz...a US company. I love it. Poor man's mayo, sweet, sour and creamy. - Liam Hemmings
Brown Sauce is great for eggs too. I love a fried egg sandwich smothered in brown sauce. - Matthew Neale
Ok. So salad cream sounds almost like Miracle Whip. Over here in the U.S., they usually either refer to it as Miracle Whip, or sometimes just "salad dressing" (not sure what, as that certainly gets confusing). - COMPLICATED MR. NOODLE
http://bit.ly/11FyP7 Man! Amazon shipped the sauce fast. OK, so after the first taste I have to say that it tastes like A1, but slightly less flavorful and more tart. It's pretty good! - Drew

TURN ON THE NEWS RIGHT NOW.
Six year old boy got into an experimental aircraft and launched it. He's 10,000 ft above sea level in this thing. UPDATE FOR LATECOMERS: The boy, Falcon Heene was not found in the balloon when it landed at the site, authorites looking for him. BOY FOUND AT HOME, HIDING IN THE ATTIC! - tehKenny
I repeat: this is not a Disney comedy. THIS IS REAL. - tehKenny
Why wasn't he in school?! - Anika
They're talking military uses? This is crazy. - Anika
Oh man! Dad knew the kid was inside, but thought the aircraft was tethered. How far as the balloon traveled? - Anika
At least they know it flies. And well. - Anika
Hope the kid will be OK. From the live video, it sure looks like it's going really fast. (ok, the anchor just said the estimate is 20-25 mph) - Andrew C (✔)
I really hope that kid is ok. Man, I would be passing out about now if it were my child. - Charley M
The newsreader on MSNBC is pissing me off with her cutting people off. - Anika
They're. Calling. Out. The National. Guard. Holy fuck. - tehKenny
National Guard is launching a helicopter! This is too much. - Anika
So, that thing is filled with helium? Wow! I wonder if the kid can see what's going on. - Anika
Holy crap. Watching right now. - Rochelle
Uh-oh. Looks like the camera man lost the balloon. - Anika
Funny. These people don't give 6 yo that much credit. I guess if you shut them out of learning, they'd be pretty lost. I'd rather assume that the dad at least explained to the kid what does what, physics and such. - Anika
The balloon is headed toward Denver (according to Fox which I turned to to see if they had Live footage of the kid) - tehKenny
It's been in the air for TWO HOURS?!?!?! Holy crap!! - Anika
Well I know what I'm watching today. - tehKenny
That is so bizarre. Hope he gets down. - Lo

Oh dear. :-( - vicster: full-bodied
That's what CNN just said. They haven't found him on the ground but a sibling thought they saw him fall out right when it was taking off. Plus, they can see in the pictures right now that the door is hanging open. - Rochelle
The MSNBC feed I'm watching hasn't said anything about that. Maybe it's behind? - Jordan Hofker
Conf: Said the aircraft wasn't supposed to carry anyone. They said the the child is inside the aircraft for sure. Not sure on what the purpose of the aircraft was besides a family project. - Anika
The boys name is Falcon. At least that's what I'm hearing. - tehKenny
Ah, the school district was off today. (answered my question). Dad had no idea the boy went in. Another sibling saw him go in and told the parents. - Anika
Parents are Richard and Miami? I hope this all turns out alright. - Jordan Hofker
If he fell out when it first took off, and it's been in the air for 2+ hrs and they've STILL not found him on the ground...geez. - vicster: full-bodied

Good point. - Jordan Hofker

Okay. I don't watch that show :-) - Jordan Hofker
Is the silver behind them in that picture the balloon we're watching now? - Jordan Hofker

That's what I was wondering, but the shape seems odd - Ryan Versaw
Jordan, it looks like something similar. - Rochelle
Were I to be a 6 year old with a helium balloon in the back yard tethered, you can bet your ass I'd climb in and go for a ride. Just sayin'. - Wirehead

I really REALLY hope the kid is just hiding somewhere because he's afraid he'll be in trouble for launching the balloon. - vicster: full-bodied
Which is why I'm amazed there's no schematics posted online yet. - Anika
amen to what vicster said. - Louise "Weezy" Alcorn
the kids brother ran into the house after he saw him go into the compartment, and the balloon then became untethered and took off. police already searched the house for the boy - Neil Bernhart
But I'm laughing at the police tape stretched between the 2 SUVs. There's nothng else around! - Anika
at some point someone (ie: the father, neighbor, etc) mustve stated "theres a 6 yr old boy in there." anyone know how this report began (mentioning the boy)? - Carlos Ayala
The family called the local news for help tracking it, they said. - Jordan Hofker
They're saying now that his name isn't Falcon. That's another sibling in the family but the boy who is missing is named Ryo. - Rochelle
Anika, true, but not for long. - Micah
Well, I hope wherever the boy is, he's safe. - Anika
If he was there, he would have experienced -14C. Frostbite and hypothermia would already have set in. - AJ Batac
If that bottom area is made of cardboard, would it have even retained that shape? (The bottom was still flat) - Ryan Versaw
And the lack of oxygen and the amount of He wouldn't be nice. - Rich
Ugh, this is making me feel ill. - Rochelle
Same here Rochell....ugh - Just Mrs. V
Ah, I thought it was 10,000 feet - Rich
Wind blew it shut? - Jordan Hofker
Ryan/Clark/Jordan, they said it was locked/latched shut. - Rochelle

dangit! sorry, Rochelle... I'm slow. - Neil Bernhart
Sheriff's office is looking at some cell phone video (maybe?) - Jordan Hofker
Neil, that's okay. - Rochelle
Jordan, source? MSNBC? - Rochelle
It's like they're not aware the camera is on. - Jordan Hofker
Sounded like he was unsure of the cell phone video though, as he only heard it from the other reporters. He missed what the sheriff (or whoever) said - Ryan Versaw
Okay, I flipped over to Fox News. I've been going back and forth between CNN and MSNBC. - Rochelle
Now the dude is saying a neighbor maybe saw two of the brothers on their roof video taping? - Jordan Hofker
(I'm just typing whatever I happen to hear on this stream) - Jordan Hofker
Or him as he flew away. - Jordan Hofker
@Jordan, thanks. I don't have sound here at the office. - vicster: full-bodied

Here's a state patrol and sheriff audio feed for the area, though I've heard nothing related to it at this point: http://www.radioreference.com/apps... - Ryan Versaw

Also, you can switch to a Fox News Talk Radio live video from the menu on top of http://interactive.foxnews.com/livestr... - Ryan Versaw
Update is that the family says a box/compartment was attached to the round thing on the bottom and THAT'S what they boy was in. So that box part fell off, presumably with the boy inside. - Rochelle
Awwww :( - Lo
That box piece has not been found. - Rochelle
The kid has been found safe and sound? (Looking for sources: http://ff.im/9TKGp) EDIT: NOPE. - Jordan Hofker
Nothing in those threads says he was actually found. - Kenton
Yeah, retracting that. - Jordan Hofker
This is like the 21st century version of those old "boy stuck in a well" events. Except now it's Twitter instead of radio that everyone is paying attention to. - Kevin (aka ThreadKilla)
RE. Baby Jessica, "A poll taken by The Pew Research Center for the People and the Press in 1997 that measured coverage of Princess Diana's death earlier that year found that in the previous decade, only Jessica's rescue rivaled the Paris car accident in worldwide attention." http://www.cbsnews.com/blogs... - Micah

If anyone is still interested... Live local news: http://www.9news.com/video... - Ryan Versaw
I hope that's not true. Like Kevin said in the other thread ( http://friendfeed.com/jamesfe... ), it's a balloon - if he really fell out like that, shouldn't it have shot upwards? - Andrew C (✔)
any news ? - Viva Vida
Oh wow, Rod. - NOT THE CRICKET
I hope it isn't real - Rodfather
Same here. - Jordan Hofker
i don't think it is, they said he was in an external basket, I have a feeling that that upper compartment was for filling the balloon as well as instrumentation, it's possible it was just some meteorological gear, hopefully. - NOT THE CRICKET
I heard that is the basket and there was some damage on the bottom. Could be wrong. - Rodfather
Rod, that's what everyone thought, the parents confirmed there was a plywood basket that was attached to the pole sticking out of the bottom. - NOT THE CRICKET
Sheriff says that the balloon that landed was in the same condition as when it took off. (According to local MSNBC news) - Jordan Hofker
Whatever Rodfather posted, it's gone now. - Lo
I hope that means it was a fake. - Jordan Hofker
I still don't understand this. If there was no basket (as they're saying now), what did the father originally say? - Ryan Versaw
Sheesh, looks like the family-blaming has already begun. - Lo
He's apparently at the house - Ryan Versaw
He's at the house and fine - Rodfather
in the attic in the garage - Rodfather
OK, so now that he's home and safe, can we a) start making jokes now and b) move on? - Kevin (aka ThreadKilla)
Well, if you look at twitter, people starting making jokes immediately... - Ryan Versaw
Oh good, now we can get back to work (aka minesweeper) - Lo
If this was done on purpose, I'm going to cock punch the next storm chaser I see. - Rodfather
he is so busted. - anna sauce
@Rodfather - Hey! Just punch the whacko stormchasers. Oh...wait. Okay, just punch the ones who take their KIDS! (That's just stupid) - ‘-.-’ Tutivillus Grift
Jill, I was referring to the quotes from neighbors/"friends" of the family saying that the father put his kids in danger... picked up by ABC while everyone still thought he was dead. I'm a child of the 80s, used to parent-blaming commencing only after the crisis has ended. It is pretty messed up that the sibling lied when the severity of the situation must have been clear to him. - Lo
I'm glad they found him and that he's okay. - Jordan Hofker
Every time there was a threat of a tornado, my family would go outside to watch. I'm still alive and I've seen some neat clouds and stuff. - Jordan Hofker
Thanks, Rodfather - just caught it. - Micah
Yeah Jill, I'm not saying the parents have no responsibility, it was the timing that was depressing. After their news appearance, it looks like the parents may have even more responsibility than it first appeared! - Lo
So what do people think about the kid telling Wolf Blitzer (filling in for Larry King) last night that it was "for the show"?? And then puking on the Today Show (twice)... poor kid must have not had a very good night last night. - Chris Heath
I think someone needs to be cock punched now - Rodfather
I forgot about him as soon I saw that baby falling under the train video. Besides, if they're going to endanger their children for attention, I'm happy to give them none. - Lo

Vista or Windows 7? (One year macbook experiment is over -- going back to windows...)
What happened? (Or didn't happen?) - Chris Lasher
95 or Me. - pn
ME, definitely. Best. OS. Ever. - Chris Lasher
2nd the Ubuntu recommendation ;) - Mitchell McKenna
thanks for the thoughts. (Well, except for the snarky ME thoughts... ;) ) Ubuntu maybe as a VM. I'm in the corporate world, and playing nice with the rest of the infrastructure is important. - Andrew Su
were you able to play nice with the corporate infranstructure on a mac? - Mitchell McKenna
I can play nice with the corporate and academic infrastructure with a Mac. I don't waste hours of me time fighting to make Windows bearable and don't waste days trying to configure my video card to make the UI less crappy. Not mentioning fighting with OpenOffice. - pn
@Mitchell, yes, the mac platform is fully supported for me. I just didn't like the OS. Very few things were more efficient (shell scripting) and many things were less efficient (office apps, the lack of an alt key for keyboard shortcuts, exchange). and even with 4GB memory, I found myself fighting apparent memory issues all the time. My Dell XPS 13 with 256GB SSD, 8GB RAM arrived today... - Andrew Su
I'll be running what little Win I need using VirtualBox on my Mac. For reasons I can't go into, I need MS Access for a short time, just until I port over to MySQL. Ick. - Christopher Fields
Windows 7, b/c Vista I think is (unfairly) being euthanized. Also, I heard 7 is having a coming out party, so get your tiara ready! - delagoya
apparently IT wasn't ready to go 7 quite yet. I guess that means I'll just get them to reimage when they do (or maybe VM it)... - Andrew Su
win7 is very similar to vista, with modifications to lower system resource usage. disable aero in vista to achieve something similar - Mike Chelen
Win7 and its not even close. Lots of UI improvements and back end stuff. - John Hogenesch
Are you sure it wans't that you weren't understanding how memory is reported? 0 free memory is the most optimal state. - Rich
win7! Been running it since beta came out and now have the final version (out ahead of time by our uni) on all my work machines. Best OS for me so far (and I've tried most of them). - Björn Brembs

To all those people asking about Wave invites a) I don't know if/how many we get b) please form an orderly queue :-)
Since I have seen lots of people asking, but nobody offering, I conclude that the new invites haven't gone out yet. Has anybody actually received a new account today yet? - Matt Leifer
Is this the queue :) - Kubke
Are we forming the queue here then? If so, here I am :) Thanks! (allyson.lurena at that gmail email account) - Allyson Lister
The BBC suggest that each account gets 5 invites (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1...), but I read on Techcrunch yesterday that each account got 8 nominations (not invites, merely suggestions...). There's obviously no definitive info out there. Anyway, if there's invites going, and this is the queue, count me in :) (sjcockell at googlemail) - Simon Cockell
I saw some comment about release at 4pm BST but no idea where that came from or if it is accurate - Cameron Neylon

Those Ebay buyers are going to be sorely disappointed when they find that it's not an invite but rather a nomination, which I read a Google's way of saying "we'll know if you try to let in a SEO or spam account". - Mr. Gunn
Ok - it looks like I have eight - can other people on the sandbox confirm numbers and we can see about dividing these things up. Also can anyone who got their own invite delete the comment above? - Cameron Neylon
I can confirm 8 invites... which are really nominations, it seems... - Egon Willighagen
Line gets crowded ;-) pls count me in: yar.nikolaev [] gmail.com - Yaroslav Nikolaev
I make it 17 names above - and I've seen at least three other requests (Richard Akerman, Mike Ellis, David Bradley). So not sure how to do this. My inclination is to prioritise based on people who will be able to put some direct effort into building (but not necessarily coding) things. - Cameron Neylon
Can I just check whether Bjorn, Andy, and others with sandbox accounts have any free invites? - Cameron Neylon
Would it be worth getting those interested in obtaining accounts to write a short abstract (say 100-200 words) about the sorts of projects they'd use their account for? - Dan Hagon
According to http://twitter.com/larsras... no more invitations are being processed until tomorrow (Sydney time) - Nick Lothian
To all those wondering what is going on here - we are trying to coordinate the invitations we have with the people who want them. Its a bit of a slow process. - Cameron Neylon
Shouldn't Wave make that process faster? :) - Jan Aerts from Android
Yes, Jan. There's a wave weve set up for tracking who's got them and who still needs them. Everyone from this thread (that I know - please don't spam this thread ;-)) has been added. - Mr. Gunn
Since I haven't heard from Google, yet, I'll place myself in this queue for Wave invites. First name, last name, gmail. Thanks for organizing the process. - Chris Lasher
Cameron - Thanks for your efforts to match requests to invitations. Hopefully there'll be enough to go around for everyone on this thread who asked for one. Btw, because I didn't mention it above, my gmail account name is axiomsofchoice. - Dan Hagon
Jan, Wave makes the communication faster and more efficient in some ways but it doesn't help that much for human processes - like making difficult decisions. Also as far as I am aware the invitations I haven't sent haven't actually flowed through the system yet so you're not missing anything as yet... - Cameron Neylon
Oh, I'll add myself late to the list. rni.boh at gmail (you know the rest...). - Bob O'Hara
Would like to add myself to the queue as well ;-) - bala chandar
I would like to add my name to the list too - mhanwell at gmail if there are any invites still out there. - Marcus D. Hanwell
I have now been nominated for an invite (it's "in the mail"), so I've removed my comment above. Thanks @robsyme ! - Andrew Perry
I got mine too. Thanks - Deepak Singh
Got an invite as well today, and removed my comment above. Thanks anyway. - François Dongier
I have some Wave invites now. If anyone here still hasn't got one, post your email here (or direct message me if you prefer). - Andrew Perry

terminator_trailer.jpg
Is it just that online multi-player is growing? Would you like to see split screen regardless? What games are good to play split screen? - Kol Tregaskes
Nobody plays games together in person anymore - Rodfather
Split scree=co-op. And most of the time, you are playing online, or solo, as there are fewer and fewer co-op mode games available. - Justin Whitaker
when you have friends over, why not? sports games don't use split screen though. - Alfredo 亜瑠布れっど
we do at home, but i'm on the couch with my laptop and she is at the desk with her PC :) Console games are better as a spectator event IMO - bear (aka Mike Taylor)

@mndoci 100 slides, 30 minutes: ru serious? what's your usual rule of thumb?
What feels right - Deepak Singh from iPhone
I'm a teacher/A-level lecturer. I'd say that a slide every 3-5 minutes is fine. Depends on the content though. I'd rather have lots of slides with hardly any info on than few that are crammed full. - Rich
My slides are sparse to say the least. Usually either a picture or one line of text - Deepak Singh from iPhone
that's how I figured: 1 slide is about 15-20 sec this way so you're ok w/ your 100 slides for 30 min - Attila Csordas
Yep .... that's pretty much the drill. There are a few where I do slow down - Deepak Singh
25 minutes is what it took. I was down to 92 slides by the end I think - Deepak Singh

"This poll will only be relevant to those of you who actually use the viewfinder of your digital camera (or those who have cameras WITH viewfinders as not all do these days) - but it comes from a conversation I had at a party a couple of weeks back with a group of friends (yes we’d had a drink or two). It started when someone asked me what eye I look through the view finder with? I’d never considered the question before (and had to actually grab a camera and take a picture to work out which eye I use). I use my right eye - but as we surveyed everyone at the party we discovered it was 60/35/5 (right/left/both). So today I thought I’d see if that were the case with a larger sample of respondents." - Kol Tregaskes from Bookmarklet
