I'm such an introvert. I have a social hangover. Does anyone else ever get these? At least that's what I call it, when you need a quiet day to recover from all the holiday social interaction.
i know EXACTLY what you mean. i sometimes get them as soon as i've gotten home...or even on the way back from some event or gathering.
- Joe Silence
Doesn't really apply just to the holidays, but I notice it a lot more after large holiday gatherings.
- Trish R
Someone once defined introversion and extroversion to me this way: An extrovert is energized, or gains energy, from the people around them, while introverts expend energy around people. The definition was meant to emphasize that introverts don't necessarily hate people; many do enjoy the company of others. They are just exhausted by them, so they need time to recharge. I found the definition to be spot on for me.
- rowlikeagirl
@rowlikeagirl, that definition is spot on for me, too. That's how I describe it to people who don't understand, and especially when people think extrovert means outgoing and introvert means shy and quiet.
- Trish R
I just packed up my stuff and will be headed back to LA shortly.
- Derrick

I always do that the following day. Now I have a term for it.
- Raphael, Raphael
aye, now i can tell my wife i have a "social hangover" instead of her just thinking i'm going nuts again.
- Joe Silence
YES! I know what you mean, because it happens to me quite often. I enjoy seeing friends and family, but it is exhausting to the point that I could just collapse in the spare room for a day or so (if given the chance, which never happens.)
- Mark "DerBingle" J
I'm extroverted (moreover) and it certainly applies to me too, Trish.

Every day you get up, and push a rock up a hill like in the Greek myth of Sisyphus, and at the top it rolls down to the bottom again. You are condemned to do this every day- perhaps sometimes finding hope in press releases about new treatments or new drugs that you can leave the rock behind. Treatment-resistant depression is a cruel lot. You see so many others being helped by meds that barely keep your depression in check. Yet, you still must keep functioning because you don't want to give up-- you want a fulfilling life. Going on disability seems like giving up. But whatever you touch somehow gets tainted. You are late to work even though your work can be outstanding. Relationships with intimates falter, people pull away. There is a pain that if you acknowledge it, will cause you to scream and...

you cannot win on the interwebs. draw some crap it doesn't get noticed. draw something amazing in pencil and people say it's not real.
- Joe Breen
I'm really happy everyone liked these. They're my most liked entry to date, Thanks! There also seems to be some question about whether these are actually Pencil Drawings.I can assure you that they are. When I get home, I should have the links. I have more drawings, too.

Thanks Enrique, I'll post some more soon. They are a little more obvious than these ones. As Luke points out; without being able to look closely it's impossible to tell. He's right; but up close it's more obvious. I'll upload the originals to Picasa later, and then you'll be able to zoom in with any photo viewer and see for yourselves. I can't believe how many people liked these. A few people have reposted them already. Thanks!
- Michael Fidler
Absolutely awesome, Michael. You are extremely talented. Everyone should repost these pix and help to make you famous. You should be doing this full time - you obviously have some passion for this. Bravo.
- Chris Loft
These are really beautiful, Michael. Do you sell them?
- Shannon Jiménez
Chris, I would love to say they're mine, but it's not true. I've had them for a while, but I'll find the artists names. It will just require a little backtracking. Besides, they deserve the credit; all I did was find them:-)
- Michael Fidler
Cut the bullshit! :) Photos are very good.
- Burçak Çubukçu
I draw alot in pencil, but they are amazing, the best for me is the girl, that is the most photo-like one. :o)
- Rob Sellen :o)
I agree Rob, the girl is amazing. My favorite by far! Wait until you see it close up! It's really had to tell, even up close!
- Michael Fidler
Burçak Çubukçu If these were photographs, they would be very good. As Pencil Drawings,(which they are), they're amazing.
- Michael Fidler
@Burçak Çubukçu I can't tell if your serious now or just kidding around. I hope your just having fun! If you are serious, I've never given you a reason to question my integrity, nor do I ever intend to. However, the second set is up now, so judge them for yourself, but don't judge me! http://ff.im/1BJh5 BTW, I messed up and reposted the shot of the women again. Oh well. Hope you like them:-)

LouCypher, I know it well, but I don't see why I would want to do that. I hope everyone knows by now that they're not mine? I'm sorry, but I can't say it any clearer than that.

nah, i don't believe it is done in pencil. i am sure it is photoshopped :)

I'm finding this both interesting and humorous at the same time. There's a separate message board where this post is being discussed and it has another forty comments on it already. Kol, I can't thank you enough! Kol found another post which helps to prove that these are done in pencil. I had my doubts about a few of them because I collected them from several different sites over time, but the site Kol found has done a great job pulling together an impressive collection of these drawings and more. Take a look - http://www.flickzzz.com/2009...
- Michael Fidler
Actually there are more than what this site shows. There's an entire set with the cats(little cats), which I have, and there's a new portrait set.

Amazing and very very very good.... Very impressive ...

Yeah we know, thanks though, James. :-)
- Kol Tregaskes
Excellent pictures - how long did it take you to scan the photographs into Photoshop and then edit them? The only pencil that has come into contact with these "drawings" is the Photoshop pencil. A tip - stop trying to fool people into thinking you are a "real" artist, because all you are doing is cheapening proper artist's works whom have spent hours creating real pictures as opposed to a few minutes on a graphics editing package.
- The Wimp
A bell does ring here. And I am remembering why I was so attracted to the tiger...and the lion for that matter. These are exact replicas of prints I had in our bedroom when I lived in Dallas. I had bought the prints (in color) at a department store,
- Melanie Reed
Actually, I have learned quite a bit about these drawing since I made this post. Not only have I discovered all of the artists, but I've learned more about how they are created. There are many other artists besides the ones featured here who practice...

"Researchers found that around one in three people actually feel physical discomfort when they see someone else in agony. The findings could explain why some people are more empathetic to other people's misery. Dr Stuart Derbyshire, a psychologist at the University of Birmingham, made the discovery after inviting 123 university students to watch video clips and photographs of patients and sports stars in painful situations. The videos included a footballer breaking his leg, a tennis player turning over his left ankle and a patient getting an injection in the hand All the students said that, for at least one of the images or videos, they had an "emotional reaction" - such as feeling sad, disgusted or fearful. But a third, also claimed to feel real pain in the same part of the body as the victim they were watching."
- RAPatton
"The scientists found that while viewing the painful pictures, both groups showed activity in the parts of the brain that deal with emotions. However, those who said they felt physical pain showed greater activity in the parts of the brain that handle pain - suggesting that they sensations were genuine."
- RAPatton
I personally, have an elevated tolerance for my own pain, but I can't stand to even hear about others suffering
- RAPatton
Very true, good to see it is getting researched and attention. If we could learn to feel each others pain, the world would be in a lot better shape

A single sperm has 37.5MB of DNA information in it. That means that a normal ejaculation represents a data transfer of 1,587.5TB - http://inothernews.tumblr.com/post...
So I had to calculate this out: the HGP estimates that the human genome is about 3 billion base pairs (3Gbp) long (Their count includes 22 chromosomes+X+Y) which can be used as an estimate for how many base pairs are in a haploid gamete. Since each base pair can have 4 different values (A-T/T-A/G-C/C-G) a base pair basically encodes 2 bits of information. So 3 billion base pairs = 6 gigabits = 750 MB. On average, there are about 250 million sperm per ejaculation, so that comes (pardon the pun) to 1.875 petabytes of information. Of course, there's a lot of redundancy in that information, but 1.875 petabytes in about 2 teaspoons of volume is impressive in terms of information density. (Bear in mind, my mathematical skills are fairly weak, and I could've gotten this calculation very wrong.)

I don't think it's possible for me to love this entire conversation more than I do RIGHT NOW. And I love all of you for making it happen.
- tinypants - Hagitha of FF
@jeff: it shouldn't; the testicles will still produce the same volume of sperm as before. They just won't go anywhere. The body reabsorbs the sperm over time. So...kind of like performing a regularly-scheduled defrag?

Isn't the overwhelming fraction of the human genome "junk DNA"?
- Andrew C
My favorite science post ever. Easily.
- Jason Huebel
"Junk DNA" is kind of a misnomer, though. It's more accurate to say we don't really know what they do. Some sequences are pseudogenes, which are evolutionary relics. Other sequences are retrotransposons--molecular parasites that embed themselves into an organism's genome and copy themselves endlessly. But there are areas of non-coding DNA that are involved in the regulation of gene...

yeah we mixed/mastered ourselves... I agree - the vocals as a whole could be a little more present. getting them to be up front without "hearing the mic" is a tough balance.
- Nathan Chase
nice song, so re: the tech - you ended up w/ enclosure generated by postero.us then reshared to your main feed, that produced the playbar?

"The Perseid meteor shower will have to fight it out with a bright moon for visibility this year, but astronomers are still predicting a dazzling show tonight. From any vantage point in the world, you might see more than 80 meteors an hour streak across the sky during the best viewing time, when the moon's glare will be weakest—late tonight and into the wee hours of tomorrow, local cloud and lighting conditions permitting."

Kevin, one of the downsides of living here :( If it gets clear at all I may drive out to Snoqualmie or something.
- joey
I always screw this up. When they say early morning hours of tomorrow they mean this tonight/morning correct
- cheapsuits
In 2002, when I lived on the lake, Akiva came up and we laid out on the dock and watched the meteor shower. It was amazing. I'm tempted to drive over the pass to get a better view since it's so cloudy here.

Rochelle, if I'm not too tired after class tonight I'm going to try to do that.
- joey
Err I'm confused when is it thank you please? Tonight just doesn't cut it, I need digits so I can convert it to UK time
- Toby Graham
Well the article says about 1am PST. I'm not sure if they are visible from the UK or when because I'll be seeing them at roughly 9am your time but of course you're in a completely different place.

- cheapsuits
Indeed, but it's most impressive and easiest to catch at the peak. It's a bit cold here now so I don't think I'm going to be spending all night outside.
- joey
Cool beans, I thinks it's good to go as soon as nighttime kicks in. Cheers joey and maybe a little bit to cheapsuits, only maybe because of the subtle hint at my retardation ;)

BEX, I love how your profile bit says "I can kick your ass!" :) Not only do I believe that 100%, but I also think it might be enjoyable for some reason.
- Josh Haley
I'm sure that I could get a little whimper out of you ;)
- BEX
Yep, I was right. I'll be in my bunk.
