I'm such an introvert. I have a social hangover. Does anyone else ever get these? At least that's what I call it, when you need a quiet day to recover from all the holiday social interaction.
yes I know what you mean - VAL D. Zone
Story of my life. :) - rowlikeagirl
i know EXACTLY what you mean. i sometimes get them as soon as i've gotten home...or even on the way back from some event or gathering. - Joe Silence
Doesn't really apply just to the holidays, but I notice it a lot more after large holiday gatherings. - Trish R
Someone once defined introversion and extroversion to me this way: An extrovert is energized, or gains energy, from the people around them, while introverts expend energy around people. The definition was meant to emphasize that introverts don't necessarily hate people; many do enjoy the company of others. They are just exhausted by them, so they need time to recharge. I found the definition to be spot on for me. - rowlikeagirl
@rowlikeagirl, that definition is spot on for me, too. That's how I describe it to people who don't understand, and especially when people think extrovert means outgoing and introvert means shy and quiet. - Trish R
I just packed up my stuff and will be headed back to LA shortly. - Derrick from iPhone
I get those too. - John (a.k.a. dendroica)
I really like the definitions. - LB - not a snow bunneh
Im locked in a firehall for 10 hours ... I need alone time ,,, as soon as I leave - johnpiercy
Definitely understand that. - holly from iPhone
Yes. All the time. - Kol Tregaskes
I get those - Alex Scoble
Me too! - imabonehead from Android
I always do that the following day. Now I have a term for it. - Raphael, Raphael
aye, now i can tell my wife i have a "social hangover" instead of her just thinking i'm going nuts again. - Joe Silence
YES! I know what you mean, because it happens to me quite often. I enjoy seeing friends and family, but it is exhausting to the point that I could just collapse in the spare room for a day or so (if given the chance, which never happens.) - Mark "DerBingle" J
I'm extroverted (moreover) and it certainly applies to me too, Trish. - Micah Wittman
I definately have the social hangover today:) ..xmas was kind of intensive... - anjelina
Family 2 days in a row....lots of drama....you're right, definitely a social hangover! So good to be alone and quiet. - Bonnie Foster from iPod
Yes - Jenny Morman
Depends on the people I guess. Family in intimate surroundings energizes me. Crowds wear me out. - MASTER OF THE OBVIOUS

Letters: The last days of David Foster Wallace - Salon
http://letters.salon.com/books... "Imagine being Sisyphus Depression eats away at everything you think it good about yourself. Every day you get up, and push a rock up a hill like in the Greek myth of Sisyphus, and at the top it rolls down to the bottom again. You are condemned to do this every day- perhaps sometimes finding hope in press releases about new treatments or new drugs that you can leave the rock behind. Treatment-resistant depression is a cruel lot. You see so many others being helped by meds that barely keep your depression in check. Yet, you still must keep functioning because you don't want to give up-- you want a fulfilling life. Going on disability seems like giving up. But whatever you touch somehow gets tainted. You are late to work even though your work can be outstanding. Relationships with intimates falter, people pull away. There is a pain that if you acknowledge it, will cause you to scream and... more... - edythe from email

Thanks Enrique, I'll post some more soon. They are a little more obvious than these ones. As Luke points out; without being able to look closely it's impossible to tell. He's right; but up close it's more obvious. I'll upload the originals to Picasa later, and then you'll be able to zoom in with any photo viewer and see for yourselves. I can't believe how many people liked these. A few people have reposted them already. Thanks! - Michael Fidler
Absolutely awesome, Michael. You are extremely talented. Everyone should repost these pix and help to make you famous. You should be doing this full time - you obviously have some passion for this. Bravo. - Chris Loft
These are really beautiful, Michael. Do you sell them? - Shannon Jiménez
Chris, I would love to say they're mine, but it's not true. I've had them for a while, but I'll find the artists names. It will just require a little backtracking. Besides, they deserve the credit; all I did was find them:-) - Michael Fidler
Cut the bullshit! :) Photos are very good. - Burçak Çubukçu
I draw alot in pencil, but they are amazing, the best for me is the girl, that is the most photo-like one. :o) - Rob Sellen :o)
I agree Rob, the girl is amazing. My favorite by far! Wait until you see it close up! It's really had to tell, even up close! - Michael Fidler
Burçak Çubukçu If these were photographs, they would be very good. As Pencil Drawings,(which they are), they're amazing. - Michael Fidler
Wow, amazingly realistic - Threepwood
@Michael Fidler did you draw them? How can you so sure? - Burçak Çubukçu
dont look like it - Prakash
@ Michael Fidler don't push so hard :) - Burçak Çubukçu
@Burçak Çubukçu I can't tell if your serious now or just kidding around. I hope your just having fun! If you are serious, I've never given you a reason to question my integrity, nor do I ever intend to. However, the second set is up now, so judge them for yourself, but don't judge me! http://ff.im/1BJh5 BTW, I messed up and reposted the shot of the women again. Oh well. Hope you like them:-) - Michael Fidler
@Michael: try deviantART, not Picasa, to submit your artworks - LouCypher
WOW "I can't believe it's in pencil" - sofarsoShawn
LouCypher, I know it well, but I don't see why I would want to do that. I hope everyone knows by now that they're not mine? I'm sorry, but I can't say it any clearer than that. - Michael Fidler
nah, i don't believe it is done in pencil. i am sure it is photoshopped :) - hasin hayder
These would be great even for photos. - tomit
i'm not able to comprehend - Varun Shenoy
I'm finding this both interesting and humorous at the same time. There's a separate message board where this post is being discussed and it has another forty comments on it already. I think its great how this has created some lively discussion, considering that when I posted this I was doubtful if anyone would even like it. When I went to sleep last night there was only had 3 or 4 likes... more... - Michael Fidler
Very interesting. I would like to see them up close and in person...just to make sure. Bill said it's real and possible. Your 2nd set of picts look like pencil. Nice work in finding these! - LaFern Cusack
Kol, I can't thank you enough! Kol found another post which helps to prove that these are done in pencil. I had my doubts about a few of them because I collected them from several different sites over time, but the site Kol found has done a great job pulling together an impressive collection of these drawings and more. Take a look - http://www.flickzzz.com/2009... - Michael Fidler
Actually there are more than what this site shows. There's an entire set with the cats(little cats), which I have, and there's a new portrait set. - Michael Fidler
Found your post here, Michael. :-) I tried my best to find the artists. - Kol Tregaskes
Amazing and very very very good.... Very impressive ... - Linda Zeek-Bobinski
fake. http://lenscratch.blogspot.com/2009... Even if your not claiming to be the artist, these are photographs, well except the woman, thats pencil - james foor
Yeah we know, thanks though, James. :-) - Kol Tregaskes
Excellent pictures - how long did it take you to scan the photographs into Photoshop and then edit them? The only pencil that has come into contact with these "drawings" is the Photoshop pencil. A tip - stop trying to fool people into thinking you are a "real" artist, because all you are doing is cheapening proper artist's works whom have spent hours creating real pictures as opposed to a few minutes on a graphics editing package. - The Wimp
A bell does ring here. And I am remembering why I was so attracted to the tiger...and the lion for that matter. These are exact replicas of prints I had in our bedroom when I lived in Dallas. I had bought the prints (in color) at a department store, - Melanie Reed
Actually, I have learned quite a bit about these drawing since I made this post. Not only have I discovered all of the artists, but I've learned more about how they are created. They are always copied from a photograph or painting, but usually a photograph. It is extremely time consuming and detail orientated work. There are many other artists besides the ones featured here who practice... more... - Michael Fidler
Most of them have portfolio's on deviantart.com and their work is truly amazing even if they are copies of other artists work. I suppose with this level of detail, they have to start with something. Nevertheless, I'm still in awe of their talent. Melanie, the animal prints you refer to are from a very well renowned photographer. The originals are B&W I'll look it up later but I do have... more... - Michael Fidler
wow; they're unbelieavably beautiful. - liladreams

Some people really feel your pain - Telegraph - http://www.telegraph.co.uk/science...
200221760-001[1].jpg
"Researchers found that around one in three people actually feel physical discomfort when they see someone else in agony. The findings could explain why some people are more empathetic to other people's misery. Dr Stuart Derbyshire, a psychologist at the University of Birmingham, made the discovery after inviting 123 university students to watch video clips and photographs of patients and sports stars in painful situations. The videos included a footballer breaking his leg, a tennis player turning over his left ankle and a patient getting an injection in the hand All the students said that, for at least one of the images or videos, they had an "emotional reaction" - such as feeling sad, disgusted or fearful. But a third, also claimed to feel real pain in the same part of the body as the victim they were watching." - RAPatton
"The scientists found that while viewing the painful pictures, both groups showed activity in the parts of the brain that deal with emotions. However, those who said they felt physical pain showed greater activity in the parts of the brain that handle pain - suggesting that they sensations were genuine." - RAPatton
I personally, have an elevated tolerance for my own pain, but I can't stand to even hear about others suffering - RAPatton
:( - Derrick
I feel like, too. I can't watch torture or anything like that on the Tv or films. - WorldofHiglet
I know someone who is like this. - holly
Very true, good to see it is getting researched and attention. If we could learn to feel each others pain, the world would be in a lot better shape - echostreamer

A single sperm has 37.5MB of DNA information in it. That means that a normal ejaculation represents a data transfer of 1,587.5TB - http://inothernews.tumblr.com/post...
So I had to calculate this out: the HGP estimates that the human genome is about 3 billion base pairs (3Gbp) long (Their count includes 22 chromosomes+X+Y) which can be used as an estimate for how many base pairs are in a haploid gamete. Since each base pair can have 4 different values (A-T/T-A/G-C/C-G) a base pair basically encodes 2 bits of information. So 3 billion base pairs = 6 gigabits = 750 MB. On average, there are about 250 million sperm per ejaculation, so that comes (pardon the pun) to 1.875 petabytes of information. Of course, there's a lot of redundancy in that information, but 1.875 petabytes in about 2 teaspoons of volume is impressive in terms of information density. (Bear in mind, my mathematical skills are fairly weak, and I could've gotten this calculation very wrong.) - Victor Ganata
Oh. Victor. =) - Admiral Anika
http://xkcd.com/386/ Can you tell I don't want to do my charts today? - Victor Ganata
Yeah, try telling the girl you're just backing up your data. ;) - Cristo
Jeez, now that's all I'm going to be able to think about... - Jack (a.k.a. Jeber)
LOL @Cristo - Mo Kargas
No wonder I feel tired all of the time. - Akiva Moskovitz
Too.... many..... JOKES! - Haggis (Sean Loyless)
Well, an ATTEMPTED data transfer. Sometimes it's kinda like wadding up a bunch of 1TB USB keys and tossing them in the trash. :D - Chrimmus Tad
That's just about the coolest stat ever. - Chrimmus Tad
This could be really really bad if women take their lead from mobile broadband. $60 for 5 GB would add up in a hurry! - Mark "DerBingle" J
Tad, that's why you have to use the Tiger Woods branded Raid-14 approach. ;) - Cristo
It's like spamming. You're sending out all that data and only 37.5 MB of it will be used. - Morton Fox
And that, my friends, is why every sperm is sacred! http://www.youtube.com/watch... - Mark "DerBingle" J
Another great post! :-) Informational, true, and funny. :-) - Mathew A. Koeneker
Spammers are essentially manwhores then - Itachi
I don't think it's possible for me to love this entire conversation more than I do RIGHT NOW. And I love all of you for making it happen. - tinypants - Hagitha of FF
EPIC. - ha3rvey (Ho)^3
does a vasectomy result in a lower data density I wonder? - jeff hammond
BRAVO! - Uncle CW™
@jeff: it shouldn't; the testicles will still produce the same volume of sperm as before. They just won't go anywhere. The body reabsorbs the sperm over time. So...kind of like performing a regularly-scheduled defrag? - tinypants - Hagitha of FF
So Condoms are firewalls? - Uncle CW™
I wonder how much data a virus contains? It'd be interesting to compare a virus attack to a pregnancy attempt just in terms of data transmission. I'd think virii carry much less data... - Chrimmus Tad from fftogo
Aaagh! It's viruses!!!!!!111!!!1111!!111 - Victor Ganata
Sorry, Tad. Major pet peeve of mine ;) - Victor Ganata
You OK, man? Srsly, here, sit down. Have a beverage. Relax a bit. Maybe read a few entries over at FML or AwkwardFamilyPhotos... - tinypants - Hagitha of FF
Isn't the overwhelming fraction of the human genome "junk DNA"? - Andrew C
My favorite science post ever. Easily. - Jason Huebel
Agreed 137%. - tinypants - Hagitha of FF
"Junk DNA" is kind of a misnomer, though. It's more accurate to say we don't really know what they do. Some sequences are pseudogenes, which are evolutionary relics. Other sequences are retrotransposons--molecular parasites that embed themselves into an organism's genome and copy themselves endlessly. But there are areas of non-coding DNA that are involved in the regulation of gene... more... - Victor Ganata
But to answer your question, Tad, apparently a cough can contain up to 200 million viral particles http://www.livescience.com/health... The size of the rhinovirus genome is about 7,000 nucleotides http://blogs.america.gov/science... while the influenza genome is about 13,000 nucleotides long.... more... - Victor Ganata
And you might possibly cough both or more out at once. Plus bacteria, etc etc - Chrimmus Tad from fftogo
For the record: I just totally hit on my boyfriend using information gleaned from this thread. - Sparky
This? Is why I love Sparky. - tinypants - Hagitha of FF
p.s. we have determined that we have sufficient enterprise storage capacity to continue with the release. - Sparky
Women prefer bigger bandwidth.. No dial up for them.. - Uncle CW™
I think Petabytes is a very appropriate term for this discussion. - Kenton
Now I'm wondering if it's possible to ejaculate as often as you cough when you're sick.... Still, you'd have to be sick with the flu and cough 3,000 times to match the throughput of a single ejaculation :D - Victor Ganata
Thinking (with some regret) about all those sperm I lost so casually in my youth, and how much smarter I might be today if I'd listened to my spiritual mentors! - Mark "DerBingle" J
Let the heathen spill theirs, on the dusty ground. God shall make them pay for each sperm that can't be found. - Christopher A Carr

I don't believe this has _anything_ to do with Iran. It's a clever hack, but there is so small a remote chance of this being anything even near Persia, in my opinion. Somebody having fun. - Louis Gray

After most have put their placemarks on, don't let anyone edit it because there's always someone out there waiting to fuck shit up. - Andrew Trinh

I like the sound and good song. Did the guitarist mix it? Personally, i'd like the vocals to stand out more and the guitar just a tad less in areas but i like it. Very nice. /grats - ·[▪_▪]·
yeah we mixed/mastered ourselves... I agree - the vocals as a whole could be a little more present. getting them to be up front without "hearing the mic" is a tough balance. - Nathan Chase

vocals to the front, guitars to the back, and a great track you have there. - Marcos Marado
Here's us playing it live at a recent gig: http://friendfeed.com/nathanc... - it was shot using Qik on an iPhone to stream it live, so sound/video quality isn't the best. - Nathan Chase

thanks Steve - yeah, we only have the single guitarist, so we just tried to capture what we pull of live, with a bit more polish. Glad you like the track! - Nathan Chase
Dude, this is your band? I stumbled on them today completely unrelated and by accident. Strange days... great band. I love both tracks, want more, will pay ;) - Michael W. May
You're not going to believe this, but I didn't get a chance to hear this when you posted it, and then MWM linked me to the band's MySpace, and I just started randomly listening and was like, hey, great drum work. Yeah, Cherrypeel might be it. That's really the only other place other than MySpace and Facebook that we have songs up online. - Nathan Chase
It could have been Myspace, but I don't see what would have led me to your page. I did end up there, though *points to friend request and blog sub* - Michael W. May
Friend Request Approved! :) - Nathan Chase from IM
Also just sent a Friend Request. Oh, the other thing I thought seeing the MySpace page? Wow, a MySpace page that doesn't suck! ;) - Jandy, ConcertMaven of FF
Nice! Yeah, wanted it to be something different when you first see it. Also tried to keep it as simple as we could (simple for a MySpace page, anyway) - Nathan Chase from IM
Bump that funky music - Josh Haley

Meteor Shower Tonight to Yield 80 Meteors an Hour?
"The Perseid meteor shower will have to fight it out with a bright moon for visibility this year, but astronomers are still predicting a dazzling show tonight. From any vantage point in the world, you might see more than 80 meteors an hour streak across the sky during the best viewing time, when the moon's glare will be weakest—late tonight and into the wee hours of tomorrow, local cloud and lighting conditions permitting." - joey from Bookmarklet
Doubtful we'll get to see it here in Seattle tonight. :/ - Kevin Pedraja
let it rain space-rocks, :) - chaz2b
Kevin, one of the downsides of living here :( If it gets clear at all I may drive out to Snoqualmie or something. - joey
I always screw this up. When they say early morning hours of tomorrow they mean this tonight/morning correct - cheapsuits
In 2002, when I lived on the lake, Akiva came up and we laid out on the dock and watched the meteor shower. It was amazing. I'm tempted to drive over the pass to get a better view since it's so cloudy here. - Rochelle
Rochelle, if I'm not too tired after class tonight I'm going to try to do that. - joey
cheapsuits, yes, tonight. - joey
Can't see em'? Then listen: http://spaceweatherradio.com/ - cheapsuits
Err I'm confused when is it thank you please? Tonight just doesn't cut it, I need digits so I can convert it to UK time - Toby Graham
Well the article says about 1am PST. I'm not sure if they are visible from the UK or when because I'll be seeing them at roughly 9am your time but of course you're in a completely different place. - joey

Happy Birthday! - joey
That's peak time. It desn't start and stop like someone is flipping a switch. When it gets dark start looking. I saw one last night, which is a far cry from 80/hr but still... - cheapsuits
Indeed, but it's most impressive and easiest to catch at the peak. It's a bit cold here now so I don't think I'm going to be spending all night outside. - joey
Who are we kidding.. of course there is an app for the Perseids: http://spaceweather.com/perseid... - cheapsuits
Cool beans, I thinks it's good to go as soon as nighttime kicks in. Cheers joey and maybe a little bit to cheapsuits, only maybe because of the subtle hint at my retardation ;) - Toby Graham
*update* cheapsuits fully redeamed with posting of iPhone app - Toby Graham
