MacBook Pro. I love my iPhone but there is still much to be said for the experience of typing on a keyboard and being able to cut and paste. - Thomas Hawk
When I had an iBook and a Win Mobile phone, definitely the laptop. Now that I have an iPhone it has been almost 90% phone usage instead (I know, I know, why did I get an iPhone when I'm still on an iBook? ;). - Joel Falconer
a computer, but i know that may change more when i get an i-phone - orionstarr
I posted a similar question two weeks ago -- stunned that on a recent vacation my iPhone was sufficient for all my needs, and in fact more pleasurable than my firefox-encased PowerBook experience. iPhone gave me simple direct access to all my media sources, and the wife and I have been playing ongoing Scrabble games ever since. Perfection! - Marko
Before my Iphone, my mobile devices were Motorolas with little functionality, aside from that of a phone. My laptop serves indoors and the Iphone outdoors. - Jason Lovett
Kind of a three way split between my desktop, laptop, and N800. - Jake (aka Jawee)
Office? Like...you mean when I have my laptop in the living room or in the kitchen? Or maybe when I'm in bed? You'll have to be more specific... - Rahsheen(isSoAwesome) via NoiseRiver
I use my Nokia N82 whenever I'm mobile: photos, videos, Podcasts, Web browsing, etc. and before the N82 I used the Nokia N93i. - LonelyBob
currently I use my Treo650 more than anything (no iPhone, still prefer a keyboard) but I'm still heavily considering getting an EeePC or an N810 or such, so until then I don't know, with an ultra portable I don't know which I'll turn to more. - nick carrasco
blackberry mostly, though I prefer paper for reading newspapers/books - clarke thomas
definitely my iPhone, although I've been using an LS800 over the past week, which has been really sweet. The iPhone is what MSFT was shooting for with Origami but missed it. - Rob Bushway
Mostly I use my ppc6800 but some things are still easier on the laptop - Richard Kannegieser
Depends where, on train or somebody else's office Mac Book Pro, on bus or generally outside WM6 phone, if free wifi available iPod Touch instead of phone. (so 75%, 20%, 5%) - Nick Cowie
No lugging around a laptop for me. Hit me on my iPhone. - Hao Chen
Its 80:20 in favour of my My MacBook Pro. When i don't have an accessible WiFi Network, my phone, a Sony Ericsson W950i. I'm hoping the iPhone will balance the equation once it I get it. - Parth Awasthi
Predominantly iPhone to consume or eee PC to produce on the go. - simonpure
Desktop computer, PocketPC for RSS reading, managing stuff while moving from a place to the other. - [ zu ]-eBailey via twhirl
anyone that spent a million dollars on purchasing or building a tool got conned...people that understand social networking should make these purchases - Sagar Kamdar
can't imagine anything worse then going to a manufacturers web site to make friends - what does that say about you if you do? - ben rogers via twhirl
is email another social network that is a waste of money as well? - Nik Cubrilovic
“FriendFeed should tell me via my google reader behaviour, when my friends add new feeds. That would rock. I know at moment this moves beyond using the shared items public rss feed and would require login info - but id provide it, just so i could track and add what other people were adding. Killa.”
Way to remain level-headed on this, Corvida. Your friends do care about you. - Louis Gray
Corvida: Louis' article really enraged me. I just am tired of dealing with the nasties online. Normal people are always nice. Something about the Internet makes nasty people feel entitled to get in your face. I'm actively working against that. If I see someone be a jerk against someone else I block them. I just have zero tolerance anymore for jerks. They can go someplace else. - Robert Scoble
Robert, doesn't that count as censorship? It's great to see you and Louis bringing these issues to light btw since you reach so many people... - Mona N.
@scobleizer - cannot agree more. wonder why there are so many oversized egos today - ming yeow
Mona: no. censorship is only done by governments, not by individual citizens. And, anyway, censorship would only happen if I took away their right to publish what they want. That's what their blogs and/or their FriendFeed accounts are for. Freedom of speech does not guarantee that anyone will listen. It also doesn't mean you have the right to pollute my communities. - Robert Scoble
Mona, Robert isn't saying he's going to stop people saying anything. He's just stopping listening. - Michael C. Harris
... and, beaten. Do you people just constantly hit refresh ? - Michael C. Harris
Robert: Do you moderate all of your comments? ---which I think is great due to the sheer volume of responses and feedback you probably get. Not that many people take the time to do so :) - Mona N.
Mona: yes, I do now. I used to let anyone comment. In fact, on my blog, I still let most any random jerk still post there. But I'm definitely decreasing my tolerance for that kind of behavior. - Robert Scoble
Robert: Now that I think about it, I see how your patience can run thin. Especially in the www where it's avant-garde and people use individuals like you and or Louis to gain exposure..... It's fascinating - Mona N.
Mona: yeah, one tool of an attention-hungry person is to start a fight. Think about high school. Did anyone pay attention to the geek? No. But did everyone pay attention to a fight? Yes. Humans are attracted to jerks and bullies (and salacious stories). It's the downside of our culture. - Robert Scoble
Robert: You think? If anything I think it's opposite on the internet.. People recognize attention whores and disregard them... - Mona N.
Mona: I think that's true long term, but short term they definitely love a good fight. - Robert Scoble
@Louis @Robert Thanks for those words. You shouldn't get yourself worked up over this Robert. You're strategy for ignoring them is the best you can do, but those people just aren't worthy putting the type of energy necessary into getting angry with them. It's terribly draining and it's more negative for you than it is for them. - Corvida
Mona: in general the FF crowd is absolutely wonderful. I think that block is going to let this community go on for a long time without getting polluted. Corvida: oh, I have built up a thick skin about this stuff, but there's no reason why I need to have it forced in my face anymore. They can take their vitriol to some other neighborhood. - Robert Scoble
Robert: That's why I am SO addicted to FF... quality > quantity and most of the individuals ignore the negative attention whoring individuals. It's quite refreshing and I have to admit, I prefer the FF interactions over real life... wow. maybe i need new friends =\ - Mona N.
Corvida, awesome response at SheGeeks. I think this demonstrates that social media is not inherently good, and the banality of evil can be amplified as well. - Elliott Ng
The same people dishing abuse will also be the most vocal when it comes to them being blocked. - Ross Maguire
The world is full of crazies, both on- and offline. Thankfully, they seem to be an annoyingly vocal minority, but their reach is sometimes disproportionate. Most of all, they love seeing themselves talked about. - John Samuelson
With all of the amazing things to learn and share with each other it saddens me that cowards (and that's exactly what they are - insecure, socially awkward cowards) have to hide behind their computers and spew ignorance-laced venom. I love FF and the social communities for the building of my personal and community knowledge. People that look to destroy that special creation (knowledge, community, etc.) are dead to me. Rock on Corvida. - Morgan
Scoble can I have a private conversation with you somewhere? I won't take up much of your time. - Corvida
Corvida: call me anytime. +1-425-205-1921 - Robert Scoble
Mona: my cell phone number has been on my blog for years. I get very few calls at all, which is just great, and almost all of the ones I get are very high value. You can call anytime too! - Robert Scoble
wow, that's insane! people don't crank call you?! - Mona N.
Mona: I get a couple a month. Think about it. If you call me I have your phone number and can crank call you back. (I don't answer calls that don't use caller ID). - Robert Scoble
but... that's so personal! Maybe it's because I've always separated my real life with my internet life I'm more apprehensive. Actually I'm thinking of inviting myself to the dinner you're planning to have with your family and Louis'.. I'm a good babysitter HA - Mona N.
Coming in late on this one. I've noticed it more and more that people are becoming abusive on the web (in chat rooms, in comments on blogs...including TechCrunch), it's ridiculous and I'm glad to see people are trying to take a stand against it. Stand strong Corvida...the FF community has your back! - Justin Korn
I agree 100% with Robert Scoble. "I just am tired of dealing with the nasties online. Normal people are always nice. Something about the Internet makes nasty people feel entitled to get in your face. I'm actively working against that. If I see someone be a jerk against someone else I block them. I just have zero tolerance anymore for jerks. They can go someplace else." - Joao
Great article...but even better discussion. The FF community has become just that. - Chris Nixon
The greatest part about Louis and Robert is they involve themselves in discussions.. As I become more immersed in the Twitter/FF community, I've noticed most "A-listers" are one sided... I truly adore FF... actually I think I'm in love with it. Like.. I want to marry FF and have FailWhale babies together <3 - Mona N.
@Chris Nixon, agreed. I'm glad to be here among thoughtful people. What went down in Corvida and Wayne's interview is just disgusting. Corvida, your continuing to do your work with dignity will always draw people to you and away from what I hope is an ever-decreasing hateful minority. - Ayşe E.
Mona N, I thought you wanted to marry Google. Now you want to marry FF too. - RAPatton
Haven't been in a Blockbuster (or similar) for nearly 4 years (during baby run-up) and still feel good about the time I save. Time - our most precious resource these days. - AJ Kohn
ive heard of people hunkering down but never bunkering in! 9 movies - i hope you got the weekly rental :) - Allen Stern
@Michael Tefft: I have a Roku and it's terrible. Not the device - the selection at Netflix. It's really really bad. My wife and I haven't found anything to watch on it yet. :( AppleTV, and to a lesser extent, Unbox on TiVo and movies on Xbox 360 ftw. - Don MacAskill
Have fun! I love the unlimited monthly plan at Blockbuster for watching 18-hrs TV/day when I'm sick... - Mitchell Tsai
@richard some people chill better alone .. when you deal with deadlines and people in your face all the time , the last thing you want to do is go to a busy crowded club . Im a fulltime firefighter in canada , after being couped up inside with 4 guys for 10hrs , I look forward to "alone" time . - fotographic
One of those movies better star Steve McQueen....partial credit for Paul Newman - Cains
Michael: too bad, I was gonna invite you to Half Moon Bay for a drink at the Ritz! The weather here is stunning. - Robert Scoble
i want my copy of legally blonde back. you can't keep it forever mike. - Calley Nye
Me two, need a rest, rented a bunch of movies too - Jeremiah Owyang
Mike, that sounds like an awesome time. If anyone deserves some time off it is you! Let us know how the movies went. Take Care. - Shannon Coolican
Hangin' at home with no cell, IM, twitter, etc. and watching movies sounds like a good day to me. Hell, I should do that this weekend and catch up on all the movies I haven't seen. - Miiko Mentz
Louis, if you're going to del.icio.us a link (is that a verb?) you don't really need to FF it as well. It creates duplicate entries and you are already aggregating your bokmarks into your FF. - Marc Vermut via twhirl
I didn't FF it (except to the LouisGrayish room) - Louis Gray
You lost me on 3. Is the comments fragmentation a problem or a benefit to my friends? - Alejandro S.
Comments fragmentation is only a problem if you use a bunch of diffrent sites. Most people just use Facebook. - Pat Hawks
Alejandro, I was referring more to the problem of jumping around to different social sites to see what your friends are doing on those different social sites. If you and your friends only use email, Facebook and Flickr this isn't really a problem. If you and your friends use a ton of social sites, it is. - Andrew Meyer
This probably bears more thought - why are more average mainstream users not getting into FF? I think Scoble also mentioned he was having a hard time convinicing others. I think people are turned off by the aggregation aspect and not fully aware of how the conversations are an attraction in and of themselves. - Jason Kaneshiro
I think people equate social networking sites to profiles, comments, and private messages. FriendFeed just isn't that. - Rahsheen(isSoAwesome)
First time I saw FriendFeed, I thought it looked too much like Jaiku. Wasn't until later I realized it was like Jaiku except people actually used it. - Pat Hawks
My best friend from high school just joined Facebook. Yesterday. These things take time. - Louis Gray
Jason, I think the beauty of FriendFeed's conversation centralizer doesn't come into focus until you use a lot of different social sites. Most of my friends don't use a ton of social sites. - Andrew Meyer
I hope you will see that we are centralising the comments a LOT more Louis on http://fav.or.it - plus we send comments back here - to twitter - and to the blogs! - Nick Halstead
My 63 year old dad just friended me yesterday on Facebook and it freaked me out - Marco (aureliusmaximus)
I have this problem with my friends. I don't understand them. I finally got two onto plurk of all places. - Josh via twhirl
@Louis: funny, a few of my high school friends and college friends have recently (< 1 month ago) discovered Facebook. Their status lines read something like "oddly addicted to this Facebook thing!" - AJ Kohn
Maybe the "friend" in Friendfeed and Facebook will evolve to let you write in the relationship or connection. My 15 year old son sent me a Facebook invite recently and there was no family category. - Larry Kless
I just saw my wife's name pop up with "...favorited photos on Flickr", so I've apparently got *someone* on board. - Roger Benningfield
I think alot of it is the difference between the early adopter crowd that flocks to things like FriendFeed and Twitter and everyone else. "Normal" people (used with affection) are attracted to social media sites in order to do specific things, accomplish specific tasks. They want to stay in touch with friends - they use Facebook or MySpace. For Normals the application is just a tool that facilitates their goal. For Early Adopters experiencing the tool itself is part of the goal. - Marco (aureliusmaximus)
@Larry.It's labeled "In my family" and it gives you a dropdown where you can specify how you are related. - Pat Hawks
If FriendFeed is used as a dashboard to manage all your social services, and responses posted here can be imported back into the source service, then it doesn't matter if your friends are on FriendFeed, right? You can use imaginary friends to import non-member content...the biggest thing missing is Facebook import to FriendFeed (SocialThing! does it, why not FF?). - Bryan Landers
FriendFeed is the first service of it's kind I've shown non-geeky friends/family and not have them laugh/snicker/confused/eye-rolling/just not caring. It's interesting how important being able to view media inline is to folks. Oh, I subbed you LG cause of your feed, plain and simple. - Jim Stanger
@Jim: Is that good or bad? Meaning, did they just not even grok it enough to laugh? ;) - AJ Kohn
AJ: Still working on that Q. Many friends/family that are plugged in at all tend to think of these tools as a waste of time. I don't count those not plugged in as they tend to view being plugged in at all as a waste of time. ;) It goes along with my belief that all these Web 2.0 web apps are, in fact, lifestyle tools more than anything else. - Jim Stanger
I was expecting "Reason #4: Your friends are losers." But seriously, a few of my friends are on Facebook, but I'm not. I have dragged a few onto LinkedIn, but two have said it's too invasive. I'm not even going to try to get them onto Friendfeed for a while. - Harvey Simmons
I'm still trying to find "One reason your friends are still on Myspace" - Pat Hawks
i use friendfeed because andrew took advantage of my situation and i love him for that - Chris Nguyen
About 20 of my Flickr friends went to FB but after 3 months most of them left. There are about 30 hardcore Flickrites that use topics. I like FF because I can hang with the cool kids. - Russellreno
FriendFeed-sounds kind of cannibalistic,no? - Mark Forman
@Chris Sorry for freaking you out with the Imaginary Friend thing. - Andrew Meyer
My college friends are just now starting to jump on Facebook, and I just never had the desire to join myspace. Friend Feed is the juice that I am drinking. - Mathew A. Koeneker
For me it's always "It looks interesting but I can't use it" or "I'm not into social media" or "What's wrong with x" and so forth. =\ - Jake (aka Jawee) via twhirl
Dragging friends here is futile. When we get them all here, we will be on the next big thing, so no good use of it. Just keep walking. - robertocastro
My friends aren't on Friendfeed 'cause they're not cool. Oh, well. - Chris Baskind
Well, I'm stuck following Louis Gray because he told me to. - Cyndy
LOL - that's all I follow - Louis Gray and Scoble...none of my friends get FF - James Hull
is there something bad about only following Louis Gray? :) - Jason Kaneshiro
James isn't kidding. Just Scoble and me. That'd be a different experience. - Louis Gray
What proportion of FF comments are about FF? Sometimes it feels a little like lawyers - existing largely to make work for more lawyers. - Elaine
my brother-in-law signed up for FriendFeed today. Does that count? - Thomas Hawk
they're not my friend _unless_ they use friendfeed - Tyler Gillies
More of your friends will start using FriendFeed when comments left on FF items are also pushed to the comments of the original source. For instance, when I see a friend atspond to my Twitter tweet using Twhirl, I check Twhirl out. - Andrew Meyer
I started using Friend Feed when it emerged from the cloud of tweets after I joined Twitter. I still trend to post more there as I started there but I am seeing what seems like an orderly progression to FF being my one stop shop. - Mathew A. Koeneker
"And while I once questioned why anybody who wasn't a Web services junkie and RSS maven would join, I've seen users who want to be consumers of information instead of producers of information enjoy the service, solely for communicating with friends." - Clare Dibble
I would argue that communicating with friends is producing information, but just not distributing it widely. - Chris White
Well now, this article has gotten kicked up to the top of techmeme. I hope you realize this is coming out of your 15 minutes of fame. - j1m
"Looking at Duncan's stream on FriendFeed (http://friendfeed.com/duncanri...), I can see he imported his service and added friends, but he didn't participate. He didn't comment on other items. He didn't respond to others' comments. He didn't "Like" anything. He took a very passive approach and it's the interactivity of FriendFeed that sets the service apart." This is so true. - Ginger Makela
Just 15 minutes, j1m? :-) It is kind of nuts. I was at a baseball game when all this was going on... - Louis Gray
While I don't want to repeat the comment that I left at the blog post itself, it should be noted that FriendFeed's comment/like features provide an overlay of metadata over the original artifacts that is easily accessible. - Ontario Emperor
Louis: 'He (Duncan Riley) didn't participate. He didn't comment on other items. He didn't respond to others' comments. He didn't "Like" anything.' God. That is exactly what I did. I gave FF a 7 min trial and thought 'OK - interesting enough'. Now I am going to use FF for a full week and (try to) participate. I guess one concern is that any blog comments will move off my blog to FF and, for some odd reason, I feel uneasy about that (i.e losing my current miniscule audience) - Andy C
