The Great Google Wave invite thread. Anyone who wants an invite post your Gmail address here and anyone who has invites available please use to invite the people on this list. There are also a bunch of requests in the Invites group here: http://friendfeed.com/invites
I have a few but holding them for a few people who have already asked me. I'm at kolint [at] googlewave [dot] com btw. A pain I know but if you can, could you update your comment when you have an account or just delete your comment. Ta! :-) EDIT: Try this site for invites: http://googlewaveinvites.com/
- Kol Tregaskes
Are people on this list getting invites or at least been told they have an invite on the way? You might have to be patient, it could take a long time for one to come through.
- Kol Tregaskes
Adam, yep agree. Maybe because I did that (month ago though) helped me get mine through from Vijay so quickly!
- Kol Tregaskes
@Kol, the invitation process seems to be based on nominations. For example, everytime someone nominates/invites you, you get bumped up the queue for an account until you're at the top and you get sent an invite by the team
- Ysabel Legaspi
Ysabel, ah I see, So lots of people must have nominated me. Darn, so a few users I have nominated could be waiting a looooong time. :-(
- Kol Tregaskes
if that voting system is right I'm very annoyed. I asked for an invite months ago, now all the numpties are all over it I'm not going to get a look in. It's like I've been sat at the front of a shop queue and everyone's just walking right past me into the shop. I am British but I detest both queuing and waiting, so this is pretty tough going
- Toby Graham
Like most other people, yesterday I wasn't aware of that I «needed» a Google Wave invitation this badly...but now I am!!! quackofdawn at gmail dot com

neternity@gmail.com and i promise to send a wave of 100,901 twitter followers to your doorstep each of whom will have averaged 1 tweet in their existence - this might not get me an invite but surely it will get some notice - must have that something special - my google wave invite special sauce ingredient is twitter juice PS Not to be construed as an offer, not valid in any of the 53 US states, do not try this at home, caution: contents are hot.
- Ross Button

How does anyone know if someone has already been invited? You could go back and edit your comment when you receive an invitation, but since that takes days, it could be ages before you know.
- marziah
I've not even had a nomination, RK. At google dot com I'm suezanne , in the event anyone wants to make a nomination. I've asked before on friendfeed. It's kind of humiliating to beg.

On upgrading to 2.8.1. I'm running 2.7. Am waiting a bit to upgrade given the few horror stories I've heard, but these do mostly seem due to rogue plugins. I do use the ancient Spam Karma 2 and wp-cache. They've given me no problems so far but maybe it's time to replace them with something modern. Suggestions welcome.
It's faster, and fixes a few critical bugs and one important security problem. No database changes from 2.8. No reason not to upgrade. It *might* break a few plugins, because of the security fix. But it'll only break their admin screens, not their functionality.
- Otto
What? There's another view? Please post.
- Ken Morley
I'm pretty sure it's in the collection "Never Eat Anything Bigger Than Your Head", published back in the early/mid 70s. I know I've got it around here somewhere...
- ɐ ɯıʞ sıɹɥɔ
There's a line in Swiss Family Robinson about wrapping one in a thong, so they can more easily float it to shore. To this day I have no clue what that means.
- Matthew DeVries
I'm not convinced. I'd be happy with a printer I could print to from anywhere in the world. A browser of sorts on the printer itself? Hmmmm... Not sure.
- Martin Bryant
you can do that already - the browser you can print from anywhere in the world...but why on earth would you want that? I can't think for a second why that would be useful...give me a scenario
- Zee.
It's an HP. It *will* still give you paper jams. Love that feature. :|
- Admiral Anika
Think about your parents. Then again... what's the price?
- l0ckergn0me
Zee - I'm on the train to another city and want to print a map for a friend to find where we're meeting. I log into his printer, and it's printed in his house without him having to do anything.
- Martin Bryant
i guess, but unless they could make it super easy to connect to literally any printer in any household - it's not worth the pain. Just send the mofo an email with a link to gmaps
- Zee.
@DGentry yeah, ideally...I don't want to give up on my iphone and from what I know, the next model is going to be 3.2mp..I'd ideally like to be able to share photos from an 8mp camera fast.
- Zee.
@Manuel: Possibly because I don't wanna have to go through reinstalling all my apps, etc. When you use as much different stuff as I do changing OSes - even generations of the same OS - is no minor undertaking. I'll upgrade to that when it hits store shelves and if RTM benchmarks show it faster than Vista. Also maybe after Office 14 drops too, as I don't want to re-install Office 13 only...

why is it forcing me to enter an sms if I only want to use email for notification?
- bear (aka Mike Taylor)
Mike: I hear you. we're reworking the entire registration process to make it a lot easier - it will be optional to enter your number. just enter a 123456 if you don't want to enter your number
- Anthony Feint
thanks anthony - I was curious to see how your date parsing works to be honest. it's an interest of mine (I wrote a python lib to do natural language date parsing)
- bear (aka Mike Taylor)
well i won't go into too many details mike but - we actually use php to do ours (which does make it difficult in some ways because normalizing the dates in php takes quite a bit of code). Perl would have been our second choice
- Anthony Feint
yea, the perl date manipulation code was what I used as a test when I did mine a couple years ago. the ruby gang have also done some great work with date parsing if you wanted to create a server side helper routine. FYI "2 days from now" didn't parse
- bear (aka Mike Taylor)
thanks mike - yeah x days/weeks/hours are still in the works. I'll look into the ruby stuff
- Anthony Feint
glad to help :) -- are you working on an XMPP bot interface? Let me know if you need help, pretty familiar with that area.
- bear (aka Mike Taylor)
not currently in active development but definitely will be down the track. I'll keep you posted
- Anthony Feint
you can now email reminder@task.fm with what you would like to be reminded about. So, you now don't even need to visit the site to use Task.fm. Try it out!
- Anthony Feint
Oh... Didn't know that was a requirement... It is shareware

Thanks, Sean :) I'm trying to find a utility that people have actually used and recommend! But I guess I'll just try those.

Without a doubt, for a self-hosted blog, WordPress is the best blog CMS that you can get. However, being a popular and open source software, it also means that hackers have full access to the code which they can scrutinize to find any exploits they can use to hack into any WordPress-enabled site. On the good side, one of the best things about WordPress is its plugin system that allows anyone to install any plugins or create your own plugins to extend its functionality, including improving security. Here, I have listed some wordpress security plugins (and a couple of tricks) that you can use to secure WordPress blog. All the plugins and tricks listed below are meant for WP 2.7 and above. If you are still using an older version of WordPress, it’s time to upgrade your blog.

2021!! Gotta ditch this internet and build a new one!

w/o internet explorer no one would be able to keep their pc's updated fyi :)
- John Blanton
from twhirl
@JohnBfromMemphis: Ummm Windows/Microsoft Update is separate from IE, at least on Vista and newer Windows versions AFAIK. MS unlinked Windows Explorer and IE from IE7 onward. For example, on my Vista PC typing a URL into Explorer & hitting enter brings up Firefox, my default browser
- LANjackal
2021? The web will be of different form and factor as we know it
- Thomas Chai
Ha, Internet Explorer is the best browser ever made, and the first browser that showed how the internet should be shaped, It is not going to die any time soon.
- TrafficBug
What about it makes you like it so much?
- amygeek
They spent way to much time making it look pretty, and very little on making it functional. This is the only native Windows twitter client that I've heard of though.
- Daniel Sims
I currently use Digsby as my IM and Twitter/Facebook/etc.. client... Though it's severely lacking much of what a "Twitter Client" should be, I really DON'T want to use a second app just for twitter (I need all the screen real estate I can get, even with dual 21" 1600x1200 screens). Not to mention, I WANT A FRIENDFEED CLIENT! FUCK TWITTER!
- LarchOye
tried it 'cause I'm a fan of beautiful UI. came away completely disappointed.
