Sorry, just replied on Twitter. Trinity Lutheran in Pleasanton, CA. Bishop Mark Holmerud.

Rick- Sounds serious; with a happy outcome. What happened? Church controversies can be some of the most painful. I've been through a few myself. If this is too personal, no need to respond. But please accept my sympathies. Best, Rich

That might of been me. Was it about an API?
- zeroinfluencer
No, it was someone trying to figure out how to add contacts. I just thought the initial IM "I have a question for you about Aardvark" was pretty humorous.
- Rick Klau
Yep. Brizzly included the parenthesis to bit.ly... I deleted the tweet and re-did it, pointing instead to a site where you can see Orwell's essay. I'm writing an opinion piece for a big website (stay tuned!) that goes into more detail on this...
- Rick Klau
I do not like the feedproxy.google.com URI because it violates the HTTP protocol. It tries to hijack the content provided by the destination URI http://www.fakesteve.net/2009... with a 302 redirect. It must perform a 301 redirect because feedproxy.google.com/... does not serve the content, and never will. Of course, the post is awesome, as usual ;)
- Sebastian
@Sebastian - there's no hijacking here... it's only in place because the original publisher (in this case, Dan Lyons) wants it there to capture click-through data. Further, everyone who uses this feature has the choice of using a 301 or a 302, so this is entirely under their control.
- Rick Klau
Fair point, but capturing click-through data can be done with a 301 too, hence the 301 should be the default HTTP response code. How many publishers are aware of the difference, or the setting at all?
- Sebastian
Well, since it's presented where they enable the feature, I'd assume most are aware of the setting. As to the difference, FeedBurner explains the difference in plain English (optimize for search, optimize for data).
- Rick Klau
Ok, I'm a fundamentalist ;) And you're right, the major search engines don't index feedproxy URIs.
- Sebastian
It's not me, Rick... it's all Blogger.
- Louis Gray
No idea, Scott. I am not in charge. :)
- Louis Gray
who can tell? the "secret sauce" is a moving target...that's why they keep pissing off the power users. I wonder if people still sell front page access for $$$ ?
- Richard pancakhaus Walker
from Android
The same kind of black art dominates the Spanish equivalent Meneame. Well, in fact, it is "controlled" by a tight and nearly closed user community who knows the rules very well and manages the front page news stream.
- Jose Maria Pelaez
My guess is that the submitter is not a huge digg user, so the number of diggs required is much lower than what is required from top diggers.
- Rob Diana
I Love Blogger!! Super Tool for EZ Blogging + some Fab looking Templates + coloured Fonts without going thru the Programming Pain of Crappy WordPress!! Do U wanna Blog or do U wanna be a Programmer!! + Flickr works Brilliantly with Blogger - Super for getting some awesome Visuals into Blog Posts compared to Boring Text Posts on even more Boring White BG on WordPress!! ;))

Lore, all the facts and traditions about a particular subject that have been accumulated over time through education or experience. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki...
- zeroinfluencer
Sorry, I'm lost in "particular subject" ...
- Sebastian
As in folklore - how we tell stories and over time - they morph and change, essentially becoming more messy and interesting, not refined and specific.
- zeroinfluencer
That will perfectly solve Rick's confusion!
- Sebastian
"They" did not cover each and every way to spam.
- Sebastian
Seb, Spam is just untimely messaging. Wave is a time machine..

Just post a link to an URI you own in such a thread and monitor it ... your URI will gain reputation
- Sebastian
@David SEE ABOVE! "No one is...."<more sexy than others>
- Lora Lufark
@dearest +1 <your URI will gain reputation>
- Lora Lufark
Seb, but reputation is not does not equal attention. They are parallel processes, mutually beneficial, but not equal.
- zeroinfluencer
@David IT DOES <Seb, but reputation is not does not equal attention> at the mooooooooment
- Lora Lufark
Also, my cyberpunk activities WRT spreading <strike>spime</strike> spam are way more sexy than ... reputation from a search engine's perspective might me measured by link popularity, during the first phase of a peak even w/o looking at human traffic. IOW artificial reputation is worth spamming.
- Sebastian
Sorry. with regard to ... in other words
- Sebastian
Artificial reputation? (Nice phrase, what does it mean?)
- zeroinfluencer
BTW What is the opposite of natural? ROFL :)
- Lora Lufark
Separate attention (click throughs from SM participation) and indirect attention gained by (artificial) reputation. The latter means search engine traffic resulting from spammy or natural SM activities. For a definition of SM optimization please ask Lora ;)
- Sebastian
Can't wait for the sales pitch of the SexySEO book ... more than 4096 scroll-down-clicks to reach the signup form?
- Sebastian
Seb, they are a little too toxic at the mo - they are still in development. I run a couple in private Twitter accounts to see the results. The idea behind them is to build an identity from demographics. They're weird to watch, but do work in a funny way - that is - they do RT similar users.
- zeroinfluencer
Just tell me how I can attract a gazillion of Twitter users to RT my promotional links ;)
- Sebastian
The DGR (on mass) will do that. I was trying to work out how many RTs it would take to create a ripple of action across the whole of Twitter.
- zeroinfluencer
@David fie! It's a bit vulgar to my taste :)))
- Lora Lufark
(Undetectable) commercial Twitter waves ... neat. @ biz @ ev will love that. ;)
- Sebastian
Is Rick still lost? Maybe we should talk about blogspot spam?
- Sebastian
Seb, exactly. 99.9% of Twitter use is 'conversational' - where are the continuous mexican waves?
- zeroinfluencer
Yup. There's no such thing as bad traffic. IOW nearly everything is convertable.
- Sebastian
@Rick! Where are you, dear? *sobbing* @dearest anything interesting and fresh? <blogspot spam>
- Lora Lufark
I'm much more comfortable on Twitter, where 99% of the posts are about voting for SXSW panels, Robert Novak dying, or Brett Favre re-un-retiring. I thought I didn't understand FF before this, now I'm fairly certain I understand it even less.
- Rick Klau
I gave up on blogspot spam ages ago when I moved my blog to my own domain.
- Sebastian
Rick, Seb, Lora & mcgrey - I've gotta go. Lovely chatting this evening - I'm sure we'll pick this thread up again :)
- zeroinfluencer
Lora, could you please reverse the bg img?
- Sebastian
I have a feeling that in a few years, I will look back on this thread as the day I stopped grokking the Internet. It's been nice knowing y'all.
- Rick Klau
Will have to pick this up later; shuttle's arriving at the stop, have a meeting tonight for my son's Scouts troop. And will have to read your post in more detail before I can intelligently respond. Will check back in later.
- Rick Klau
@Rick Klau "see you" then :) Yes, pleasssse ;) <I can intelligently respond>
- Lora Lufark
Lora: "I really do believe that there are plenty of much more important things in this world than KGB and their attempts to take over this very world altogether". Exactly, they could possibly contradict my world domination plans.
- Sebastian
@Lora - you lay the argument out in two steps: there was a DDoS attack, and that it was alleged to have been orchestrated by the KGB. My blog post spoke to the former, and I stand by those comments. As to the latter, I have no idea.
- Rick Klau
Blogger has just marked our blog as a potential spam site and has temporarily disabled it. I have to fill out a review form to have it brought back up. I will do so immediately, but IMO this is a "one strike and your out" thing for Blogger to do and I would suggest we consider alternatives. Not that we have to, I'm just 1 voice out of 20 after all. Discuss here what you think. I'm away from the pc but will check back in from the phone.

Meanwhile there is a terrible libelous blog that people have been flagging and no one at blogger will respond. What a bunch of idiots.
- Andrizzle Gizzle
did you consider wordpress.com? you know they have their own url shortener now, right?
- Chris Heath
I'm guessing it was just the speed of how it went up. 20 people added all in one day, with about ten or so posts coming in right after the other? Probably raised a flag in some machine somewhere. That's typical spammy activity. anyone actually looking at the content, however, would know different.
- pea
Yes I had a similar challenge with an earlier blog, it was a old health blog and I had changed the name, and had it redirect to the new blog, and I got the same issue. Wordpress could be an alternative but everyone who is an author there must also have a wordpress blog or they cannot be invited. There is also I think something like Weebly.com or something.
- Ubuntu101
Oh my. I will get this solved. Watch. :)
- Louis Gray
</takei> Sorry, couldn't resist =) I've submitted the request, but if your super powers can get it done Louis we'd all be grateful. Still likely looking for a new platform, but grateful nontheless.
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
Without paying, I think Blogger is as good as it gets, for that many authors.
- Matthew DeVries
Tina, I have put out the Bat signal. :)
- Louis Gray
I second Mr. DeVries - Blogger's probably the way to go for this many authors
- Dean "Karnatos" Michaud
Hey Louis, is Rick Klau the batman in this scenario? I'm assuming so..
- Matt Cutts
I'll host it for free if you want a wordpress blog or something else. You can either have the subdomain of your choice on wtfcat.com or supply your own domain name.
- April Russo (app103)
This happened once to my blog, too. I'm still not sure why. And that was after I had already been blogging there, at a relatively consistent rate, for a year or more.
- John (a.k.a. dendroica)
3 things I know of that will trip their automated system: 1. lots of links in every post. 2. almost everything is duplicate content (even excerpts) 3. lots of posts made in a short period of time Your first clue that you have tripped their system is when you have to solve a captcha whenever you post. If you continue to post, they shut you down and make you request a review. If you request it, then it's checked by a human.
- April Russo (app103)
Matt, yes, Rick is the secret weapon. He has followed up with me, and I sent his comments to Tina.
- Louis Gray
I've not posted there today, but there were no capthcas as of yesterday. The content is still there and the blog is still viewable, you just have to click thru their scary possible TOS Violation page...
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
from fftogo
To be an author on a wordpress.com blog, you don't have to have a wordpress.com blog. You do need to have a wordpress.com account, which is free. Again, no separate blog needed. : )
- Will-Pastor of FF
Tina, Louis, whomever, then do you think we hold off posting until this is sorted out?
- Amy℠
Hey-ya ~ that's the Matt I mentioned in my blog post that broke allwordyandjunk :)
- Micah Wittman
pffft, i posted a new entry anyway. DOWN IN FLAMES!!
- Joe Silence
Hmmm, I don't see our All Wordy FF-Group updating ... does RSS get killed if you are marked as spam, or is it just being slow?
- Dean "Karnatos" Michaud
I just tried to comment on Dead Silence's blog post, but Blogger threw up a non-scrollable window that prevented me from entering the word verification. Argh....
- John E. Bredehoft
weird, cos i just succeeded in commenting on Micah's microwave oven post around the time i put up mine. WTF?
- Joe Silence
i just commented on it a second time to see if i could still do it.
- Joe Silence
commented on the Ice Cream Truck one as well. looks like commenting is fine if you're logged in to one of the account types Blogger recognises.
- Joe Silence
i got that once but i didn't have to scroll anywhere to type in the word and hit the button. WEIRD. i blame Blogger cos i'm on FF 3.5.2 as well. wish i knew the solution here but i don't. :(
- Joe Silence
From what was said on ffundercats this week I believe Posterous was ruled out for some reason but to me that is a great alternative - no no themes but I'm sure that'll come in time but it's certainly very active and appears that lots of us are already on there. Might I also suggest a FF group for pumping in the feed into and allowing comments? WordPress is another alternative but fiddly...

- Kol Tregaskes
Blogger has been having some recent issues wrt automating the spam blog identification process. They really scared/pissed off people at the beginning of the month!!
- Chris Myles
Tina - Look at it this way. 1) Some of us never saw it roll out (IE: I had no idea it was there). 2 - You got some get rank on Google for 'All Wordy and Junk Down' ! (check it out :) 3 - I use Blogger for lots of projects beyond the obvious. Wouldn't be so fast to jump until one of the group wants to get all 'codey' with Wordpress.
- Charlie Anzman
Other alternatives to Blogger - Blog, Blogharbor, wikispaces
- TrafficBug
Yes, Posterous was ruled out for lack of theming, but theming is of course lower on the feature totem pole than "keeps the blog". I believe Dean has already setup a group on FF but as mentioned earlier the RSS isn't feeding in properly right now what with the issues at blogger. I appreciate the many offers for space for a self-hosted blog; once the group decides on the direction it wants to go to handle this we may take someone up on that offer.
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
No word yet from Blogger, but we're all able to post and I was just able to make a comment so the blog is functioning as expected. Thanks for the group link, Kol: I had it somewhere in my DMs but have gotten so many the past day I hadn't dug it up yet =)
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
I was just given orders to post about All Wordy and Junk on the DonationCoder.com forum, and it was pushed to the blog (and most likely the next newsletter) http://donationcoder.com/blog...
- April Russo (app103)
I saw the post April, and thank you for the mention =) I'm intrigued about who's giving those orders though!!
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
mouser ...the founder & site admin, and good friend of mine. I dropped a link in our IRC channel and he got all excited over it.
- April Russo (app103)
Hi all - sorry I wasn't able to check in here yesterday. Louis called and DM'd me (thanks, Louis!) and I routed this to our support team who whitelisted the blog so that the spam classification was removed (and won't be subject to similar false positives again). Now that I'm back from vacation I'll check in on why this got flagged at all. Sorry for the trouble, and be sure to keep my contact info handy if you have any other Blogger-related issues in the future. (rklau -at- google.com, @rklau on Twitter)
- Rick Klau
I'm sorry we wound up bothering you while you were on vacation, Rick, but we really do appreciate you taking the time to have this looked at. Thanks again!
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
Another reason Friendfeed RULES. There are people here who can just get stuff done. :)
- Gunny doesn't side-hug™
Very cool stuff from Louis and Rick (and maybe another reason we need to keep FF separate from FB ??!!) ... Just sayin'
- Charlie Anzman
"I love the smell of false positives in the morning" ;) - but seriously, great work everyone who was on top of this.
- Micah Wittman
Steve, the ads are supposed to be targeted to the post that was written - so it *should* be targeted. If it's not, that means something's wrong. I'll look into it. (I'm the PM on Blogger.) Thanks for pointing it out.
- Rick Klau
I can't believe how many Spam comments exist.. Maybe Blogger could flag their accounts, that _might_ get them to knock it off. What exactly are they thinking?
- Chris Myles
Chris - those aren't spam (well, mostly), it's just a colorful crowd. :) The blog was featured prominently on a show on MTV earlier this week.
- Rick Klau
It's the other blogspot bloggers repeating their blog URL over and over that gets to me!! Bloggers who do that should be flagged.. it's just not right. What I love about the FF environment is spammers get booted.. gone!!
- Chris Myles
BTW It IS very cool the site is picking up so many followers. It would be interesting to study how they use the GFC/Blogger integration.
- Chris Myles

I have admired WordPress for a while but always been worried about the migration, hosting and maintaining!
- Joe Dawson
Thanks for letting me know, Joe. I'm checking in with our support team to see what could have tripped the flag; will get back to you asap. (I'm a PM on Blogger.).
- Rick Klau
I just removed the spam classification from your blog, Joe. Going to look into why this got flagged in the first place - but this won't happen again with this blog. Thanks again for letting me know, sorry for the hiccup.
- Rick Klau
Thanks for the prompt resolution and communication Rick, great service through Twitter/Friendfeed :)
- Joe Dawson
My 9 year-old's first solo blog post. No help from Dad. And no, I have as little idea what "infernape", "jolteon" and "flaereon" means as you do.
- Rick Klau
Hey Louis - wrote up my thoughts about this on my blog: http://tins.rklau.com/2009... Short version: I think that we're addressing different issues, not really solving the same problem. And Lijit's stats and content networks are pretty slick.
- Rick Klau
Rick, I will look again. Micah didn't like my approach either. Hmmm.
- Louis Gray
I'm glad to hear they're still working on Blogger and its interesting to hear that they have to have 3 people constantly watching it to stop Dos Attacks and Spammers. It would be interesting if they opensourced it like Wordpress have and released a self-host version
- Nicholas James
The hard part about summarizing the discussion is not discussing what's next too early. But there's enough there that I'm not jumping to WordPress, Nicholas.
- Louis Gray
I've played with all three platforms and went with (and continue to) WP. I'm still shocked that Google hasn't monetized Blogger. The profile area (rich with Books, Movies and Music) would be an easy place to do this. (Trust me, I tried to convince them while at Alibris to put links there!) That, along with the lack of flexibility and plugins etc just makes Blogger a very bland platform. It might be more stable more ... accessible ... and that might be enough. *shrugs*
- AJ Kohn
AJ, interesting you say that. Rick says Blogger is monetized, and they, unlike Wordpress.com, make it easy for bloggers to post ads. The product has also integrated directly with Analytics.
- Louis Gray
The ads bit I get ... though WP has very easy AdSense plugins and does Analytics in the same way. I just think that they have a huge opportunity via affiliate revenue on profiles. If I'm on a Blogger profile of someone I like and I see they like a certain band ... why make it tough for me to go and find that band and purchase their music. It's probably my own personal nit since I worked in the book space for so long and saw such a missed opportunity there.
- AJ Kohn
AJ, you worked at Alibris? Cool. I've spent a fair sum there.
- Jack (a.k.a. Jeber)
@Louis: Does Blogger allow you to flight other ad network ads? Rubicon etc.?
- AJ Kohn
@Jack: Yes, three fulfilling years at Alibris, leaving as Director of Marketing for both consumers and sellers. I am still passionate about books and think Alibris is a great site.
- AJ Kohn
@AJ Yes, users have complete control over their page, and can include any code from any other ad network. AdSense is quite popular, but affiliate programs and even a few other ad networks get a lot of attention from our users. I like the affiliate idea on profiles - will have to give that more thought.
- Rick Klau
@Rick: Good to know and appreciate the response. And please do think of affiliate idea of profiles ... heck you can even split the revenue with the blog owner. From a purely marketing and commerce perspective (which is my background) I just see so much rich content that naturally lends itself to affiliate commerce - books, movies, music - and it would almost be a service of sorts to...
- AJ Kohn
I think Blogger deserve praise for offering a free platform that's optimized out of the box and (unlike a wordpress.com hosted blog) allows the user to monetize their blog. Wordpress.com hosted blogs have so many restrictions - allowing wordpress.com to monetize YOUR blog, but not the blog's owner!
