"Good idea and I think it would work for Spaces too. Probably possible to build yourself with Automator. Related feature I want to see: focus-follows-mouse."

"Doubtful they're shutting down. As of today there are 4 open MT related jobs on AWS' careers site and while MT may not be a profitable unit today that API has very forward-thinking business fundamentals. We just haven't seen lofty ideas materializing from developers. Doesn't mean they aren't coming. It's a minor point but after he broke the Terms & Conditions by scraping that data he appears not to have accounted for the visibility filters a requester can place on a HIT such as location, workerID and other qualifications. Having said that, his numbers are probably accurate and I'm glad he shared the data - it is revealing."

"It is an especially good time to be a pragmatist. Communities can help us interpret the wake-up call but at some point the individual must do his own research, think hard and execute on a solid vision."

"Your last sentence rings especially true. Each step is a potential point of failure. I tried to set up cap and passenger one day but got stuck on a couple of steps. Sure I could have plowed through and gotten it to work eventually, maybe switched to a different computer or whatever but time is precious. The word "easy" is thrown around too casually in tech circles. Today I've got three domains running on herokugarden and it still shocks me how short the procedure is. Thanks."

"Maybe what is wrongheaded about auto gadgets is that we haven't designed autos to be upgradeable. Why does the installation of new electronic components have to be such a headache? Maybe we should be designing auto interiors (and exteriors but that is another discussion) to be more Lego like. There are a lot of things people want at their desks that they also want on the road. We don't even have wifi in transport yet. To get a standard cubicle feature in your car today it's a PITA DIY project. I question the vision of people who say autos should not be more accommodating to addon electronics. We need to think more in terms of modularity. Take music for example. Today if you want music in your car there is no respect for wifi or CRUD. The entertainment system is limited to CD player, satellite receiver and iPod. The question cars seem to be asking drivers is Where do want to go the last time you were at your computer? And don't tell me radio is a solution - radio is a joke in most..."

"Yep git rocks and I think yours is a useful recipe. For my needs I prefer herokugarden to running my own server. Cname with them was a snap plus everything is free and if the need arises I can upgrade to heroku (rejiggered, currently in private beta). One thing that had me concerned at first was that I'd be stuck with a banner ad at the bottom of every page - but that's just their config/.yml scaffolding. Also their text editor is beautiful but I find I don't use it, for me TextMate and git gitter done. Their post yesterday on the future of deployment I thought was prescient: http://blog.heroku.com/archive......"

"That blog is sometimes a revealing read. Evidently they offered +$200k for the dot-com name of a small, mythical, woodland creature. They also: budget $15-20k for patent filings, defend Jellyfish's use of PR firms, detail Alice.com's pre-launch strategy, explain why they see every employee as an animal, and reveal why they'll never hire anyone from Michigan State."

"I miss the conversations in West Lafayette. Check out his essay called A Few Tenure Tricks. "#18 Programming languages approach: Show that the natural language used to specify tenure requirements (e.g., English) is inherently ambiguous. Argue that the ambiguity invalidates the requirements. Then devise an obscure, but unambiguous grammar that generates tenure requirements. making sure your vita is a valid sentential form. Point out that you have fulfilled the only set of unambiguous requirements available.""
