Let me know when you want to race, I'm ready. Finally ranked up to #1 last week after leaving this game on the shelf for a long time.
- Richard Lawler
RJ: the quickest way to play me in any 360 game is to say you *suck* at it, not that you just ranked up to #1. Tell you what: you drive the Mini Cooper in every race and I'm in. :)
- Kevin C. Tofel
Lindsey, it actually does make noise, but not the typical engine sound. More like a golf cart on steroids.
- Kevin C. Tofel
Ha, it's really not that hard to get to #1 on the normal difficulty, it took me a bunch of seasons. In fact I lose allll the time, lol.
- Richard Lawler
And it also works on windows machine.. at least something useful for my old win box :-)
- Alessandro Galetto
from twhirl
I use teleport http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn... thats free, there are more, but the name escapes me of the other one im thinking of at the moment. Can use win and mac machines together.
- Simon Wicks
Thats the one i couldnt remember the name of David :)
- Simon Wicks
I think you guys are completely missing the point. This isn't the same as Synergy or Teleport unless they've both baked in this feature and I didn't know about it. This will allow you to use a second computer as a second monitor for the host machine so that you essentially end up with a dual monitor setup. You're not just throwing a input data from one machine to the other over the network. If you go to the Screen Recycler web site they have a video demonstrating the process off getting this running.
- John Reynolds
They even take a Quicktime Movie as it's playing and throw it to the other computers screen. The playing and rendering of the movie is still technically being done by the host computer, it's just outputting it to it's "dummy" secondary display witch is just being viewed on the slave computer via VNC. The magic is all happening behind the scenes over Ethernet. I wouldn't want to try this over WiFi, it would NOT be pretty!
- John Reynolds
Ah OK I stand corrected. This is useful for desktops
- David McDonald
Charging stations and drive-through battery swaps: California is "all in' and electric cars. Note that Renault-Nissan has their hooks deep into this program. Nissan intends to dominate the electric vehicle market, and they're prepared to spend whatever it takes to make that happen.
- Chris Baskind
from Bookmarklet
Yeah, I think electric is winning the battle for next-generation passenger car transport. Toyota is still doggedly refusing to move beyond hybrids, and GM's Volt platform is a transitional drivetrain. Watch Nissan and Mitsubishi: they're *really* serious about all-electric drive.
- Chris Baskind
from IM
this was talked about back in the 90s for the GM EV1. never happened. maybe this time will be diff. too bad US auto industry will not be in teh lead on this (again).
- MikeAmundsen
GM is in the best position to compete. By the Volt powertrain is a compromise. Nissan wants to completely electrify its passenger line. Pretty radical.
- Chris Baskind
from IM
I thought GMs hydrogen car should have been be relatively easy to convert to electric. It was pretty cool.
- Todd Hoff
Honda actually has a limited number of hydrogen fuel cell cars on the road in California test markets (it's the FCX Insight). But a hydrogen infrastructure is even more daunting than an electric one. We all have charging stations already: our driveways.

California: May the rest of world follows you

It'll be interesting to see how they fund it?!

@simon, I just bought a new logitech mouse... my mighty mouse wasn't so mighty.
- Joshua Schnell
@joshua yeah, i got min when they were first released, the 'nipple' started causing me problems after about a month, even after cleaning it loads it still never really got back to how it should be. So dont think i'd get another one.
- Simon Wicks
probably Final Cut Pro and all the lessons that go with that.

I'm with Stephen. I want to get a MDP-VGA cable as well as a DVI-capable KVM to switch between my Vista workstation and the MacBook Pro I bought a week ago.

I-Phone!! Yes It's official I'm the last one here to own one...
- orionstarr
orionstarr, you are not alone... im a BB user for so long...
- AJ Batac
I don't have an iphone, but i use a BB (work-issued)
- imabonehead
The more teething one is the mighty mouse. Faced with the same problem as some of you guys. Scrolling works sometimes but not as often after 3 months down the road.
- Jonathan Kong
A NORMAL wireless mouse. I'm sick of this bar of soap of a mouse and this tiny trackball
-
maybe you know this, but flipping the MM over, and rolling the scrollball -hard- against a surface--way harder than you'd think OK--will break up the crap and dirt that screws these up. We've prolonged the life of many of these since they were introduced. We hate them, tho, for the most part. Scroll ball too small, mouse itself is cramping over time, etc.
- abacab
abacab I did that trick loads when I was using it, but it got to the point I was having to try it every hour or so as it wasn't responding. No I didn't just have real dirty hands either :) gave up and I use a small laptop mouse now but want something more hand friendly.
- Simon Wicks
my apple wish list includes the apple TV and iMac.
- Don Martelli
Yeah, but you did too. Wait. Shoot. I just did again. Sigh.
- Ken Sheppardson
Not only that, but I just made it echo out over Identi.ca, Twitter, bounce around on bridges... Aaaahhh....
- Ken Sheppardson
Maybe this is why censors in China and Iran don't block FriendFeed. They are too bored. :-)
- Robert Scoble
Or they figure there's little enough real signal it's not worth it. ;-)
- Ken Sheppardson
No, I didn't mean that... I see the signal. Just frustrated by tools.
- Ken Sheppardson
I just had to stop the "replication" pieces of FriendFeed. Much better tools are out there for this feature.
- manielse (Mark Nielsen)
Yeah, I've got to turn that off. I just saw @karoli respond to me in three different places because I was sending stuff to Twitter. Everywhere except as a comment here, that is :-)
- Ken Sheppardson
Lists work to keep noise down to a dull roar. Track would work better. but you knew I'd say that. ;-)
- Karoli
Karoli: Yeah, I did. ;-) Didn't mean to start the 1,423rd conversation about filter v. track v. lists or following ideas v. following people or Twitter v. FriendFeed or VHS v. Beta. It was just more of a guttural "ugh". Y'ever go behind the desk and unplug everything then try to plug it in neatly again? Time for me to do what with my microcontent stuff.
- Ken Sheppardson
You find new signals by sifting through the noise. Traditional signal/noise is really just a reinforced echo chamber IMO.
- AJ Kohn
I just consider stuff I care about signal, stuff I don't care about is noise. A fundamental problem is that's changing constantly, even with respect to people I might have on various lists or terms I might track and/or use to filter. e.g. I'd like to turn off all fire, Obama YouTube, and prop 8 stuff right now, but be able to turn it on after Miss St v. Alabama.
- Ken Sheppardson
@Ken: Absolutely. I get that. For me, I hide a bunch of stuff and then sometimes I find something I wouldn't have otherwise. Recently, I hid a whole bunch of pubcon inanity (which is more in line with my business) but was interested in Scoble and others' views on China - something I wouldn't have normally been seeking.
- AJ Kohn
subscribe to interesting people and you will find a better ratio ;)

Sorry Robert. Couldn't resist. It's 5:00 on Friday and I was feeling giddy.
- Andy Roth
Andy: that was well played, I'm just jealous! :-)
- Robert Scoble
@ricksanchezcnn is really understanding how to use social media now. It has changed his program a lot!
- Francine Hardaway
I was gonna hit liked it till i got rick rolled. as far as an A lister being featured. conrats and it is about time

from twhirl
Oh come on, Robert! You are bigger than CNN...at least when it comes to integrity. Theirs is divided, not multiplied, as shown by certain compromises which may alas be unavoidable. Perhaps it is they who should be saying, "Hey look!" If not now, surely one day. Peace.
- david beckwith
I'm only not jealous because he quoted my tweets. twice. and read my blog post telling him how to do it better. months ago. ;) yep, (gotta take what I can get...)

It's a little scary how much Google is able to pre-populate into your profile, before you even have at it. And still a major confusion is that Google has multiple profile across its services.
- LogEx
It's been a couple of weeks since they added this stuff I think. I updated one of my profiles with photos at the end of Oct. At the beginning of Nov. I did another profile and saw thought it was nice to see that I can import services

I have to use it at the school comp lab and if I use Blackboard for some reason it won't behave correctly in FF. I'm not sure if it's just some addon I have that is throwing a monkey wrench in the mix or what. So I have the IE tab addon and use that at home for Blackboard.
- Mattie Kenny
I only use IE to test the Web sites I maintain to see what I have to fix to work in IE. (sigh). I'm the volunteer Webmaster for the Spaulding Wooden Boat Center in Sausalito. www.spauldingcenter.org

Yes, for work and because a bunch of my University's web services only work on IE.

I love Firefox 3, Internet Explorer is SO 1999.
- J. D. Ebberly
I intensely dislike IE (compared to Firefox), and cringe whenever I occasionally have to use it.
- Sean McBride
I just use it to test sites we develop in the company.
- Leandro Ardissone ⍨
IE users tend to not hang around sites like this one.
- Vincent van Wylick
On my work laptop, but I don't have a choice. Also a home for the odd page that doesn't work in Firefox but I tend to go to Chrome nowadays. I do save some web pages to Web Archive format and IE is the only browser I know that does this (or at least does it well).
- Kol Tregaskes
many banks in Europe require IE for online banking and don't support FF. Typically its only the authentication parts where physical one time pad calculators are used. I am using Chrome for everything but.....

I tend to use Flock and sleipneir over IE anyday however having IE on is rather useful

I am a total non-l33t n00b when it comes to Linux. I have an Eee PC just to mess around with, and, after bricking it a few times, I must say for a device for basics like email and music, it works great. With 'cloud-ware,' such as Google Docs or similar, this may be the way to go.

about to pick one up for my daughter. She needs to make straight A's during a 9 week period, and she almost did last time. She's unaware of the rule that she has to maintain that to keep the notebook. /evildadlaugh

I converted my Toshiba with XP on it to a Red Hat Enterprise server :) amazing....thinking of making it my iTunes and Skype VoIP server :)

Darn kids with their Gooey! I remember having to hunt for distro's (usually in Linux books) and installing from command line! Bah! Now you gots yer Ubuntu! :P Linux is good stuff, though. But for chronic-upgraders, can be a little hassle. I could never re-compile a kernel without breaking something. :(
- Arlan Koizumi
finally set up my home server with Ubuntu 8.10 and it's awesome!

even my children (3 and 7 years old) use Linux, watching videos, playing games and so on.. the box is an old Toshiba AMD K6-2 with 96Mb RAM. Yeah, since 1995 all my computers are Linux PC. My next computer 'll be a Linux PC. Sure! ;-)
- Thierry R. Andriamirado
I have an old P4 driven laptop with only 384KB Ram. It struggles with XP, but Linux runs fine.

Linux is perfect for netbooks and second machines. If you're not using proprietary software, Linux is better then Windows hands down. Faster, more customizable, easier to upgrade, free. http://distrowatch.com/ pick your flavor!
- Will Higgins™
Netbooks are almost useless for me. If you need a good solid Linux Distro and you're new to the Linux community, I recommend Ubuntu 8.10.

most people don't CARE that there are newer tools than office 2003
- mjc
It's not that they don't care.. It's that they don't have the TIME to care. Any business owner worth a damn is going to focus on the things that create cash flow in order to keep the business alive. If they are given a tool to help them manage the digital age the divide will become smaller.
- Kyle Lacy
...that's because they are too busy doing the job and they don't time to look around. Their managers like to keep them so busy they never get a chance to educate themselves which suits the managers just fine - no-one to rock the boat with that pesky 'change' thing..../rant
- WorldofHiglet
Took them 10 years just to get the public to come to terms with working on a computer every day. The general public doesn't like change unless someone is holding their hand through it and showing them why it's better. And +1 for @Kyle Lacy / @WorldofHiglet comment

I notice you didn't mention NPR/PBS. Is that the model to follow? Independent government-funded corporation with additional public funding?

Sorry about missing NPR/PBS. The challenge is the depth of the pieces without gov't ties or public funding.
- LPH™ and his dog P™
I'd write it from a global perspective, more like the economist vibe, more emphasis on straight news reporting, less sensationalism and bank on the part of the population that i believe would be responsive to it. i'd map things by topic on one page, aggregated, so people who focus on causes or social change would have an area where they can track news. i'd allow commenting and focus on...

Apparently my blogging rate is inversely proportional to FriendFeed's growth rate - I am going to try to improve that so Louis doesn't make fun of my blog's lack of posts at every FriendFeed open house :) No promises, though - source code seems to flow better for me than prose most of the time...
- Bret Taylor
Same here. I stopped blogging since May. What about writing an AI app to automatically blog for you? :P

I like the model of start-ups that the way to get them to be popular is just to stick with them. (Maybe I got this formulation from Paul Graham.) I'm not sure that's meaningful, but at least it's prescriptive.
- j1m
Thanks for any and all shares, Bret. Love to see. I really hope at some point the team feels comfortable to talk nuts and bolts architecture, so we can learn and provide great products like you do. I think you could do the equivalent good of a Jesse James Garrett, talking even in the abstract about what a modern architecture means.
