Welcome Baby Ryan!!! My baby Ryan (17 years!) and I are honored to welcome another superstar to our planet! Love, hugs, and lots of kisses to Baby Ryan, Mommy Maryam, Dad Robert and big brothers Milan & Patrick and of course Grandma!!! My guess on Ryan's arrival (predication) was only 23 hours off. I thought he would arrive on Friday, Sept. 18th at 11:45 pm. Love to all, Kelly & Ryan Kim
- Kelly S. Kim
What a moment, eh? I remember when my daughter came into this world, it was so exciting there were no words for it. Congrats on your wonderful baby boy!
- Michael J. Carrasquillo
Congratulations! Welcome to the world, Ryan. :-)
- Yvette Ferry
Congratulations Robert and Maryam! And welcome Ryan. If I was having a baby today, I'd begin a blog for him/her straight away as an online diary they could look back on when grown up.
- Sandra Large

I was a c-section six week preemie in an era when that was seriously life-threatening, they didn't know if I would make for the first week. It always gets me a see a c-section / preemie come howling into the world. Welcome, little guy!

Beautiful baby! Congratulations daddy man :)
- Gary
:) Congrats Robert... best wishes to your family! Get her name in twitter and ff!
- Business Blogger【ツ】™
Right ON! I am so happy for you. I have 4 kids of my own and they are my greatest joys. Take care and I hope all goes so smooth for him and mom.
- Robert Anderson
Congrats! I wish a long and healthy life.
- Muammer Okumuş
Robert, you newest addition is too freaking adorable. I hope you and Maryam are doing well. Congratulations! Here's to a long, prosperous future!
- Mike Nayyar
Impressive! Now you can save real time searches as embeddable widgets. That's just awesome! This is a massively POWERFUL feature. Thank you FF team!
- Brian Daniel Eisenberg
Lol, you flipped the switch before the post came out as far as I can tell. I was searching for it and I couldn't see it.
- Daniel J. Pritchett
Yowsa. Makes quick easy work out of social media monitoring, don't it?
- Ian Wilker
Congrats Paul to you and your team! Another one bites the dust!
- Jorge Escobar
WAAAAAAAAA.. meta real time search.. love the concept of embed a real-time search !! Way to Team FF -- luv u guys !! :)-
- Peter Dawson
Do you guys sleep? Honestly, love the constant output and attention you guys pay to user feedback. I know this highly requested and probably not easy to implement.
- Frankie Warren
@Jesse: It's a dead twitter command "track keyword" sends you realtime updates whenever the word is used. Think of it like realtime google alerts for friendfeed.
- Daniel J. Pritchett
I'm pretty sure Gillmor et al kept calling it "track" because that's what Twitter called it back when they had it for a week.
- Daniel J. Pritchett
On a related note, live embeddable searches mean that I can hack together my own FF embeds for the pages that don't have them yet, like say "comment:dpritchett" http://friendfeed.com/search...
- Daniel J. Pritchett
Daniel, Twitter never had this - this isn't "track"
- Jesse Stay
The blogpost said they're working to implement "keyword notifications" Jesse, that will be "track"
- Frankie Warren
Twitter's brought back track, it's just no one cares. You can now have updates by keyword on Twitter pushed to you, via XMPP, just like track used to. Gillmor says that's not track.
- Jesse Stay
That's why I hate the term "track" - no one knows what it is. The way Paul is explaining it, as real-time search, is a much better way of explaining it.
- Jesse Stay
I guess we're still missing the realtime notifications piece that folks want. You can shape the firehose to watch terms in realtime but you can't yet get it pushed outside of FF via email or IM?
- Daniel J. Pritchett
Daniel, Twitter has that right now, but Gillmor says that's not track
- Jesse Stay
/me prints up a few hundred "That's not track!" t-shirts
- Daniel J. Pritchett
Killer feature. I'm watching news about Honduras scrolling by. Very useful.
- Chris Baskind
Jesse: Oh, i'm with you... Real-Time Search is a better term :)
- Frankie Warren
BTW, integrating this into my blog right now
- Jesse Stay
Me too Jesse. Making a new static page for that comment:dpritchett search I mentioned
- Daniel J. Pritchett
this is definitely cool and all, but what about API? We are falling way behind on feature sets :)
- Tim Hoeck
It's like an alternative to watching TV, in a literary sort of way.
- Ted Gilchrist
Yay! This is the killer feature (once it's in the API, of course ;)
- Brandon Titus
I'd love to see a blog post about how this is implemented. Real-time search has some interesting problems.
- Chris Lamprecht
I take it back - I can't integrate this into my blog until I can filter it to a single list. I really need an embed for "comment:dpritchett list:e20" except lists are still virtual in that no one other than me can see them unless I use the atom export.
- Daniel J. Pritchett
I am sloooooooooooow. But what/where is the template to make the embeddable widget. please?
- Marg Uerite
You're right Jesse - it's not exactly Track but it's getting a lot closer. The old Twitter Track allowed you to set up multiple search terms (e.g. track iphone) and get those delivered to your IM with zero time lag. At any time you could type "track" to see what you're currently tracking and "untrack" to untrack something - e.g. "untrack iphone". There are some third party tools that...
- Mike Doeff
Paul, is there a way to change the title of the embed? The long search string looks kinda bad.
- Jesse Stay
Mike, Twitter offers that today. Gillmor says it's not Track.
- Jesse Stay
Marg, after you do a search, click the "Share / embed search" link to get the embed code.
- Dan Hsiao
Jesse, are you sure? Can you provide a URL describing this feature? I think you're referring to Twitter Search (and saved searches) which is totally different.
- Mike Doeff
Jesse, when / where did Gillmor say that isn't track? I'm pretty sure that Steve just wants the old track brought back, with some filtering capabilities added (the old Track didn't filter out blocked accounts).
- Mike Doeff
Yay! Have been eagerly awaiting this. :)
- Rick Turoczy
Mike, he's said in various comments. Looks like Track to me... Heck, it's even called "track".
- Jesse Stay
I want to 'Like' this *twice*! many thanks!
- topo
The first step in a storystreaming platform!
- Kevin Sablan
Whoa. Wow. And Yes! Fantastic work, FF team.
- Micah Wittman
Good stuff although should support negative operators such as I should able to search my name in the all posts NOT coming from me. I've tried "from:-username" but it doesn't seem to work.
- Ferruh Mavituna
OK, you guys are wicked talented! It's kind of scary, but I love it. So what's next? Just kidding:)
- Michael Fidler
Ferruh: you just have it a bit backwards... try -from:username instead :)
- Ross Miller
WOOOOOOOOOOW. Friendfeed is really pushing some cool features out :). Friendfeed is the best :)
- alfred westerveld
Highly addictive--great stuff! I did notice that if you do a search like [google] you'll see dupe stories streaming by quite a bit (e.g. the TechCrunch story about Google Voice shows up over and over right now). Not sure if it's possible to de-dupe based on destination url a little bit more?
- Matt Cutts
two months after redesign, we have access to real-time search. good news bc my preferred search engine is friendfeed. ;)

We are there, in the battle against Twitter
- Michael_techie
I can't say enough how amazing this is. So, I ordered a bottle of real-time translation to go with this magnificent feast of real-time search :D http://friendfeed.com/friendf...
- Micah Wittman
Just to show what is possible now with this feature, I've built SteroidFeed: Go here to see it as well as download the files: http://friendfeed.com/lph... Latest version is 1.01.
- LPH™ and his dog P™
It's probably deliberate that they're de-emphasizing the application. That megatoolbar looks ugly and jarring, but you can see what they're trying to do, right? Okay, "Translate / Translate", "Zoom / Zoom", and "Send to OneNote / OneNote" are just silly, but I bet that can be fixed. The idea of having actions categorized, with a few popular actions promoted out of each category, doesn't seem like a totally unreasonable approach to managing toolbar/menu complexity.
- ⓞnor
yeah, i'm sorry but that just looks awful. does. not. keep. it. simple.
- MG Siegler
To be sure, the "Actions" category is lame -- isn't everything here an "action"? (Certainly "delete" and "reply" seem like actions to me.) In fact their whole categorization scheme is rather suspect -- "OneNote" is a category, really? Isn't that an app? But somewhere under there is a designer trying hard to make sense of an incredibly complex set of features. At a guess, they've built a pluggable system so that functionality can actually float around from app to app but retain some coherence.
- ⓞnor
But at a higher level, the whole thing feels like rearranging deck chairs. The whole model of applications with a document view and a vast menu of commands that operate on the document feels old and strained, compared to a more web-type UI where the affordances are integrated directly into the view.
- ⓞnor
Only 25% of the window is devoted the most important content. I looks like a ****ing mess to me. The vast majority of the visible buttons will not be used by most users.
- Paul Grav
Did anybody notice voice to text conversion of voicemail? That is super cool! Now, voicemails can be indexed too!
- Jigar Mehta
I'm pretty happy with the voicemail-to-trash conversion of my current system though.
- Jim Norris
I find it disgustingly ugly, but personal taste is rarely a good measure of usability. One thing, though. What about people who don't like clicking, but instead use chains of alt->something->something for commonly used commands? I kind of missed Office 2007 completely - is that option still around?
- Goran Zec
Wow. It looks like someone forgot to include a CSS file or something. Yes, there's a lot of functionality, but it's exacerbated by what I can only describe as a lack of design..
- Jonathan Terleski
Yikes, that's butt ugly. I'm not sure I'd have any idea where to start to get anything done. Somehow I don't think my mom will either.
- Joel Webber
I like the "voicemail-to-trash" conversion feature :) Also, will Google Voice + Gmail deliver all those features?
- Jérôme Flipo
I imagine that everyone on the Google Docs team is secretly rooting for this particular product manager's vision of Office 2010 to come to fruition. (Sorry, couldn't resist.)
- DeWitt Clinton
This is a caricature of an actual application. It tugs hard at my uncanny valley receptors.
- moo. bye.
This hurts my eyes. Can't they add another 100 buttons/controls/widgets? Surely there's something else buried in nested menus just begging to come out and play
- John Koetsier
The Ribbon in 2007 is stunning. I trust them to get it right with Outlook.
- Jamie
On the bright side, even though there is realively little space left for the actual content compared to the 2003 (pre-ribbon) version, they didn't take about 60% of the screen width and fill it with grey "whitespace" like... oh, nm.
- Jim Espinoza
A salutory lesson in how to make a crap product even crapper. Why does anyone bother. 2007 was just astounding for its awfulness, now the MS PR is trying to make us believe they surveyed customers for feedback. I want to find the person they 'surveyed' and give them a good talking to.
- David Eedle
I'm just getting used to Office 2007 :-/
- Amit Morson
You have to understand these poor guys at Microsoft: it's getting a lot harder to slow our new laptops down to a crawl.
- saccades
We're still on 2003 here and I don't particularly like that, but this seems like some sort of unfinished web interface. That ribbon thingy uip there seems like a waste of space.
- Johan Mellberg
from twhirl
I really think the interface is somehow broken. The ribbon was OK in 2007. This screen has 0 interface improvements.
- Andy Gongea
Do you suppose the 'softies put any effort into improving Outlook's pathetic support for IMAP? Or did they focus exclusively on pointless eye candy?
- Pat Rice
So glad I have not had to use Outlook in years. This preview reminds me of how bad the interface design was and they have only added more brightly colored icons and options for 2010. Feature bloat?
- Jackson
Voicemail will only be part of MS Office how many years after the prevalence of VOIP?
- coldbrew
Microsoft, as much as I dislike many of their products, is well-funded and has a team of very skilled user interface testers and designers. There's no way something like this could come out of there. Thus, I conclude that these are either forgeries designed to look bad, or one of the designer's children got hold of a template library and these got accidentally released.
- Mistletoe Glen
OTOH, OOo's interface is also rather awful, but in a different way.
- 9000
Every day I am teased by the Microsoft FTE's who get access to the dogfood versions.
- Sean Oliver
We have separated Groups (the new name for "Rooms") into its own section, and we have renamed "filters" to "Saved searches" to make things simpler/clearer. Saved searches have simper URLs that can be shared, and friend list operations have all been added/cleaned up.
- Bret Taylor
Our primary goal was making Groups more useful again. The friend search / group search functionality is now separate and much easier to use.
- Bret Taylor
Thank you I love the new navigation.
- Russ Jackson
We have also added Atom feeds, Block, and a number of other small missing components.
- Bret Taylor
Organization is a good thing. Thanks and keep it coming. The subtle stuff will come. Color customization, etc. I think the main think is make it look dead easy, with the advanced user stuff just a little symbol or click away...
- kilbuda
i like being able to statically set the groups it shows me on the side now.
- rob friedman
Very cool. Much simpler. Any chance of being able to rearrange the blocks a la iGoogle in the future? Saved Searches were mighty convenient up at the top.
- Mark Trapp
Yes, rearranging and theming are both things we would like to do.
- Bret Taylor
@Rob, you still can set the groups that show up by clicking on "prefs" in the orange bar.
- Ana
Where did the create feed/imaginary friend substitute function go?
- Brian Sullivan
@Ana, I just said I liked it. :) I didn't see the ability to change what was shown there prior to this change. It just seemed like a random sampling of the groups I'm on before.
- rob friedman
Excellent. Very glad to see the "Browse/edit friends" link. I look forward to being able to rearrange to put my saved searches at the top.
- Elizabeth
Nice, but I use filters (well, now saved searches) more than I do my friend lists. Personally I prefer it the way it was, although I'd be happy just to have filters bumped up some (I got a _lot_ of lists to scroll past).
- Chris, Taskerrific Guy
@Brian, I dont think the imaginary friend stuff is in the beta interface yet, I had to use the old UI to add a few yesterday.
- rob friedman
I like the new separation much more than old layout. Being able to rearrange placement of these blocks would be nice but not essential.
- Boris Gordon
Better, but you really gotta do something about that color scheme.
- mike fabio
Great work! Would be really nice to get the last modified time back next to the title of the groups. That saved me a lot of unnecessary clicks in the non-beta version.
- Christoph Studer
rob friendman -- I am talking about the create a feed function that allowed you to create the equivalent of imaginary friends.
- Brian Sullivan
I still think that the "My discussions" link under Friends should really be "My likes and comments", since there are some posts in that feed that are just ones I "liked" and have 0 comments, from me or anyone else. Would you call a post with no comments a "discussion"?
- Nathan Chase
Nathan: you are right, those should probably not be in that feed.
- Bret Taylor
We are still working out imaginary friends functionality. It is on our radar.
- Bret Taylor
Still wish there was a way to hide the top and side bars for use in a widget style browser window. Till then there's always greasemonkey http://is.gd/rBrh
- KyleHase

Thanks, Bret. You guys -- FF team and product -- are awesome!
- Eric Johnson
Thank you Thank you Thank you! Loving the beta and the FFteam's responsiveness

Why is this showing up in my timeline? It says because one of the people I'm subscribed to Liked it. I'm not a member of the room and I'm not subscribed to the original poster (Sorry Bret!) But I swear I've turned off FoaF every day and this keeps happening.
- Paul Reynolds
Its enuf, men, give me more updated info plz.
- kelvin
from IM
We have more consistent terminology now; good. Now can we have more sophisticated feed-composition tools? How about one-touch "create group from saved search"? And how about fixing the "private group - standard FEED - public group" inconsistency?
- Karl Knechtel
I don't think we need full skinning capabilities - just a colour chooser for each coloured element. Also, the prefs link for Groups is a bit ugly. I don't like magically appearing links.
- Karl Knechtel
@patrick: every element of the beta UI should have a beta URL already. Any links that you click in posts are whatever URL is actually specified in the post.
- Karl Knechtel
Bret, this is great news. I'll leave the cosmetics to better people. I like things as is :)
- Deepak Singh
@Paul Reynolds: FoaF can be turned off?
- Karl Knechtel
We just pushed a fix for IE 7/8. If you were using IE, you should refresh. Sorry for the problems.
- Bret Taylor
I love it - especially the filters at the bottom (I use Lists, more often). That said, I like Kishore's suggestion -> let us choose the ordering of the boxes.
- Ahsan Ali aka. Slick
Very good improvement, but would like to have another box of favorite friends. I wouldn't mind if I could set this up like the groups box, or if it would just remember who I clicked on the most.
- guruvan (Rob Nelson)
Simpler... When is the mobile version coming out?
- Brian Kenyon
I would really appreciate if we could drag and drop items and boxes. I want to order all this.
- Stanislas Jourdan
While the new sidebar order is good, I'm having fun getting rid of two saved searches which only bring up an "edit new filter/search page. It'd be nice to have some way to edit/delete searches, like with the groups and friends boxes. Still waiting for someone to give me a tip on how to remove those two links from the list otherwise.
- George Hall (Australia)
George: Click the "Saved Searches" title, then select the feed from the left-hand side, then click Delete.
- Karl Knechtel
like it! only thing i don't like is that i have to scroll down everytime i wanna see my saves searches now...
- Peter Efland
Peter, yep to me that's in completely the wrong place. It's the second most important new feature on FF (behind real-time) and it's now "hidden" at the bottom. I have a large list of Groups and means big scroll down to the Saved Searches, which I use a LOT. Please either return them back to the second tab down or give us the option to select what sidebars we have and what order they appear on the bar?
- Kol Tregaskes
Bret, this is great, especially being able to see all of my groups. But I agree with just about everyone else, I'd prefer to have my saved searches above groups. There is still enough room to add subscriptions as well . . . maybe??
- Chris Loft
Nice change. Please sort out the color palette next :-)
- Alex Gawley
I like it, although the name filter was better, I think. Besides putting the Searches under Friends, it would be good if the Groups would change order in relation to recent activity, like it used to be.
- Alejandro
I like the way things are separated, now. However, I too have a lot of lists to scroll past to get to groups and saved searches. It would be nice to move the saved searches and groups above the lists. Definitely loving the beta, though!
- Seth Greenblatt
A number of feeds I set up are showing as Groups. Is that right? I set up a number of Twitter feeds (e.g. "Twitter - Al Yankovic") for nonFF Tweeters. It's a little confusing since now they're listed as a Group when their settings are "Standard Feed".
- CAJ, somewhere else
I guess feeds that aren't individuals are groups :-)
- Neil Saunders
separate groups section is good. now about labelling content sources rather than people... (would be nice to have this at least as an option: show user avatar OR show content source - then those of us who read by content are happy, and those who read by user are happy)
- Richard Akerman
Alejandro, I first thought I'd miss "filter" but actually prefer "saved searches" now. Well because they are, aren't they? Makes things easier to understand. ;-)
- Kol Tregaskes
I use filters a lot and now on the HP Mini I have to scroll down the window to get to the next filter I want to check which then scrolls the page back up to the top after picking it. I have nine filters that I check probably once an hour. The page scrolling is tedious to go through. Is there a way you could move Filters up above Groups either manually or automatically based on most common use?
- Loren Heiny
Thank you! Navigating to groups/rooms was a pain.
- amygeek
Nice Job, I like it. It feels simpler and will be welcoming to new users.
- Poor Gamer
I also don't care for the name change at the top of the "Search results." The name of the search was better at least for how I use it. I can see the actual search criteria in the seach box. I don't need it in both places. Plus, when I'm clicking through a list of saved searches one at a time I often forget where I am in the list. The title helped me keep track.
- Loren Heiny
"Atom feeds" are not a "small missing components"!!! :) .. as on abay +++++AAAA+++AAAA for beta.FriendFeed
- CantorJF
Just noticed the new groups sidebar. Thank you!
- Carmen
Seems like the green box should be titled "Friend Lists" (in an actual Friends list, I'd expect to see Joe, Mary, Bob, etc. -- right now, there's a pretty big disconnect btw typical user expectations and what's appearing in that box). And maybe the browse/edit should then be titled "Browse/edit friend lists".
- Christopher Galtenberg
Even more unexpected is that when I click on Friends, I also see Groups. There should probably be another split, so we have Lists, Friends, and Groups. Bret, you guys are going to run out of colors soon! :)
- Daniel Sims
And would you *please* give us custom backgrounds and colors?
- Gaby K. Slezák
Karl: tried it, but it only brings up a new filter again. If one could edit one's "saved searches list by the NAME of the filter, it'd be easy to delete it. But your suggestion didn't bring up anything that could help me get rid of the two empty filters. Neither has a delete button.
- George Hall (Australia)
Karl:don't know whether my desktop wasn't showing the left-side bar, but late last night, I was looking at a list of my saved searches with the delete button active for all things in the list. Finally got rid of those two items that were only bringing up a search/filter page. That left-side bar with all listed searches is an elegant solution.
- George Hall (Australia)
Dont like it. No longer can get Twit Conversations to show up in Groups.. only in Home even if I add it to Groups!
- Greg

Interesting that its most recently that we've been seeing more news on this sort of thing. Between the malware in the power grid, these fiber sabatoges, and the Chinese GhostNet (Security Now had a great ep on it), its certainly been an interesting cluster of seemingly related events.

- ralphsaunders
I agree Jamie... to facebook deffinately... the more 'plugged in' group of my friends have also moved to twitter although that is a small minority
- ralphsaunders
Holger; Americans expect a box that answers the number they are calling, and that they can leave a message there
- Jackson Pollock
gunther there's a block go to their page and block (next to subscribe)
- Chris Heath
Yeah I can see twitter being next. I think I might get into user interface development in that area... it might become profitable for a short while :P
- ralphsaunders
i'm on roadrunner, and it's fine for now... no cap - afaik if they change the plans it will only affect new subscribers - i'd be grandfathered in
- Chris Heath
Jamie its only a few hours of xbox live play if your the host
- ralphsaunders
didnt know hosting was so bandwidth intensive..
- Jamie
some people can't afford 150 a month and use that much
- Xenophrenia
How is IPTV going to succeed with this. it's an enormous roadblock
- Jackson Pollock
I don't want to go back to how it was on dial-up when I had a clock by the side of the computer so I didn't spend too much time online and get a huge bill
- Ghworg
Jamie: By definition it's bandwidth intensive :) Hosting = Bandwidth
- Eric Florenzano
Limits cause people to be more conservative in their usage. They will be less likely to try new things, like streaming video.
- Ghworg
Ghworg: Compuserve used to charge by the time and they had a big clock on the top right corner of the app. You could set it to kick you off after a certain duration.
- Eric Florenzano
they are trying to protect their cable tv and prohibit online tv and video
- Xenophrenia
Sure this isn't just a ploy to get people to lock down their Wifi?
- Jackson Pollock
router firmware is the place to put the meter... or even better on the cable modem... then you could check on your account page for the isp
- Chris Heath
$75 bucks a month is a better price for the top tier.
- archaictree
jackson lots of ppl are locking down their wifi here... it's hard for me to get an open ap these days
- Chris Heath
most routers come out of the box locked down
- Jamie
I pay around $55 for 8 down, 2 up. totally unlimited
- Martin Eberhardt
with all media going to the internet, bandwidth caps are going to limit a lot of what you can do
- Matthew
If people have limited bandwidth, they'll put a password on the Wifi and force their neighbors to get their own line.
- Jackson Pollock
they are having an issue with people cancelling their cable and keeping internet and watching their video online ... that's what they are trying to stop
- Xenophrenia
It would be awesome if FriendFeed could figure out how to link an IRC server to FriendFeed conversations. Each conversation could get its own channel.
- Jesse Stay
Here's a request; get the videos of the old episodes hosted. the best twit's by far were 21, 23, 24, and so on, and they were filmed but are no longer hosted. people would love them, but Leo is holding them back, get them out there!
- Jackson Pollock
I like that the bitgravity feed lets you pause and resume without missing anything like the others do.
- Jeff
my favourite was the one after Apple announced the move to Intel.
- Jamie
Jamie; if you read the twit wiki, I listed all the taped live shows, but many are missing hosting, and those who aren't are bad quality mostly. get them really hosted
- Jackson Pollock
actually I think it was the Tech Guy - Leo had John come on to talk about the move to Intel. John said it was a great move, Leo said Apple would die (something like that!)
- Jamie
Jamie; yes that is true. However, early TWiT, the first episode with John on. (I'll check, but around 10) Leo played that interview
- Jackson Pollock
And for those interested. Episodes 15-19 are the best shows they ever made. The I get no spam thing started there, Revision3 early beginning, Kevin talks about first Diggnation shows and so on. Very very very funny.
- Jackson Pollock
I remember listening to them at the time. literally recall when John first said he gets no spam and I think Leo just died laughing
- Jamie
My dad told me he got no spam and then i showed him his spam box :P
- ralphsaunders
Jamie; it was a Steve Gibson - John thing. Steve turned off HTML emails and John yelled at him, saying he got NO SPAM what so ever, with HTML. Steve and John work fantastic together
- Jackson Pollock
yeah John said he had this setup from a friend right?
- Jamie
ralph; sell your pc. if you want to run a program like final cut, a cheap pc won't work. apple is expensive yes, but thats what's needed 90% of the time
- Jackson Pollock
uhhhhh that needs to be Leo's avatar
- Chad DeHaan
I would build my own PC... I'm not stupid :D. But the Apple side of things I think is a bit much for me. It will probably go on a student loan when i go to uni
- ralphsaunders
I thought you didn't have to pay it off till u started earning above a certain amoutn
- ralphsaunders
Gunther; until you want to update it; then you have to format. It's cool in theory, but it does not work. Every update breaks your OS. 10.5 is one download, 10.5.1 is one, and so on. you have to tailor the build for each version. doesn't work
- Jackson Pollock
walt they're going to talk about the diggbar next week
- Chris Heath
they give you a year... then if you earn above £15k you start paying it back. the more you earn the more you pay. I expect them to take out £90 from my salary this month
- Jamie
how about when you tricked Stallman to sing the GNU song
- Jackson Pollock
Although my prefered fields + a few others "User interface designers can make about $86,000 on average each year. Package designers can earn an average annual salary of $82,000." ... although idk if I want to do that full time yet
- ralphsaunders
Jackson: I just don't find him funny. He seems like a smart guy--he should try to do a serious show maybe.
- Eric Florenzano
Oh man, a TWiT meetup for Star Trek would be awesome.
- Eric Florenzano
He's of the Jim Carrey school of broadcasting. But people forget that Carrey is a standup, just being loud and screaming doesn't work
- Jackson Pollock
Plus the show is repeating right now, so it's appropriate
- Ken Sheppardson
This experiment prompted some feedback to Paul RE how they could make embedding easier.
- Ken Sheppardson
we're about to go mac mini system at home - would love to hear your tips - and ps love the dog's name - given that I'm an Aussie by choice - love ya leo
- Linda Johannesson
maybe it's on twitter's end... they have been having problems lately...
- Chris Heath
Leo's FF post that created this chat has already appeared on his Twitter, so the system is definitely working. Just not for me...
- Thomas James
thomas and gunther: have you guys contacted FF about this yet?
- Chris Heath
expirimenting with some embedding. will this scroll...?
- Ken Sheppardson
I sent them a message yesterday. I guess I can't realistically expect an answer during Easter weekend...
- Thomas James
ken i'm on my ibook today (using firefox) there's not enough posts to scroll yet... but will soon if i make this post big enough, also, yesterday i was on windows using chrome (and the scrolling was working fine then)
- Chris Heath
ken... paggin-bottom: 0px !important; (el typo mayor)
- Chris Heath
To have FF embedded alongside BG, would you constantly have to go into the code of the page to change the thread being embedded as the shows change? Or how else could you manage that?
- Thomas James
thomas... it could be done programatically but yeah you're right
- Chris Heath
perhaps it could be programmed to embed the most active twit-conversations thread at any given time...
- Thomas James
i see you fixed that typo ken... maybe even before i noticed it
- Chris Heath
Something somewhere should know what show is currently taping or repeating
- Ken Sheppardson
something somewhere... my favorite ambiguous statement... almost as good as writing pseudo code
- Chris Heath
updated the player to 600px. Seems to balance pretty well. Just need to get rid of the padding/margin/border in the bottom of the convo iframe. hm
- Ken Sheppardson
Gunther have you contacted Seagate support since some have had the data restored free of charge. I was able to recover mine using a simple interface I came across on another website
- Greg
I'm getting the drive, replaced under warranty Greg, I just want to make sure the one Iget back isn't bugged as well
- Gunny doesn't side-hug™
out of curiosity, am I the only person for whom the BG stream (embedded on live.twit.tv or anywhere else) has never worked (or even appeared) in Firefox, but works fine in Chrome?
- Thomas James
ken... it looks like you're setting the height in the iframe
- Chris Heath
all that needs to change for different shows is the iframe src. It'd be nice if there was a big button Leo could click that updated some "Now Playing" info somewhere, create a FF item, update the iframe src
- Ken Sheppardson
Gillmor, is anyone from the FF team on your show this afternoon?
- Thomas Hawk
My guess would be he's probably been tired since Friday or so, Chris. :-)
- Ken Sheppardson
yes Paul Buchheit will be on Gilmor Gang at 4PM Pacific streamed on Twit.TV live
- Steve Gillmor
I can barely hear what Leo is saying.
- Dave Winer
Leo's spent the last few days trying to recover from a tricaster failure and has been tweaking levels on different services, getting resolutions reset on feeds, etc. The ustream feed seems to have the best audio at the moment: http://www.ustream.tv/channel...
- Ken Sheppardson
Paul Buchheit, Mike Arrington, Scoble, Dan Farber, Andrew Keen, and Kevin Marks.
- Ken Sheppardson
Mike says he's writing an article right now: "FriendFeed is in danger of becoming the coolest app no one uses"
- Ken Sheppardson
Mike sorta declares FF missed the boat and won't be able to overcome Twitter's lead/network effects. Paul's trying to defend the fact that they can/should be more than one company in the space.
- Ken Sheppardson
This realtime discussion is amazing... instant realtime chat room!
- Adnan
Mike is missing the standards conversation
- Kevin Marks
Thomas, it's great. I did turn off the replies to Twitter feature though...
- Karoli
Live blogging events pretty much changed overnight.
- Ken Sheppardson
I'd love to ask Paul, will there be any chance to give people the choice for run-Time instead of forcing it onto people. That's what I didn't like. Leave it an option.
- Molly, "sorry"
That's actually a really good point: "Celebrities aren't coming to Twitter for conversation."
- Kevin Fox
I agree with Paul, personally I'm not interested in celebrities and Twitter has very little appeal for me. I'm far more interested in interesting tech and photography and for that FF is far more interesting a place.
- Thomas Hawk
Molly, just hit pause and manually refresh
- Karoli
It's lots of things. It's adaptable. It's sorta infinitely extensible. The trick is making it simple at the same time.
- Ken Sheppardson
Paul seems like a really understanding person.
- Molly, "sorry"
The comment box needs to be above the comment stream so it doesn't get pushed of the bottom of the window if a couple of people post comments while you're typing.
- Phil Maxwell
Kevin: Ask what FF's runway looks like, will ya?
- Ken Sheppardson
Can't wait to hear it. When will it post to the web.
- Tom Parish
I am not giving Twitter or Facebook my content. They keep it
- Karoli
It would be interesting to pick any two: FriendFeed, Facebook, or Twitter, and assign those two arbitrary user counts where one had 10x the other, and then try to make the argument of how the underdog was doomed, or would eclipse the larger site.
- Kevin Fox
I can't understand why it's always a choice between FriendFeed or Twitter and not a choice between Facebook or Twitter. Boggles my mind
- Bwana ☠
When FriendFeed will tip: When people get sick of duplicating themselves across FB, Twitter, Flickr, Disqus, BackType, etc.
- Karoli
There are tautological arguments. Twitter is superior to Friendfeed because it's simple, but Facebook is superior to Twitter because it has more functionality.
- Kevin Fox
I don't think a direct 1-to-1 comparison of users is fair. Does a twitter user have the same value as a FF user under all the possible monitization schemes you can imagine?
- Ken Sheppardson
*sarcastic tone* Yeah get Paul off the line so we can trash FF. *rolls eyes*
- Molly, "sorry"
FF is far superior to either for two simple reasons. 1. It's far better for conversations. 2. Visual representation is significant and in many ways can be more relevant than text alone.
- Thomas Hawk
I prefer friendfeed over twitter because it allows a conversation to beuch less fragmented. I can see the whole conversation rather than having to jump all over the place to pick up what is being said. Twitter is one on one im and not the group chat I prefer
- Iain
Mike has a very typical biz/VC approach to this it seems. Sorta limits the scope of what one sees it seems.
- Ken Sheppardson
We have real-time web around a real-time video show...
- Bwana ☠
When Paul says multiple services converging... does that mean he sees friendfeed, facebook and twitter eventually having the same functionality?
- Adnan
Adnon: No, it means he sees interoperability and a free flow of data between them.
- Ken Sheppardson
Adnan, since Facebook seems to copy everything FriendFeed does anyway... :)
- Karoli
Back in my day, we called this IRC... kinda cool it's on the web now
- Bwana ☠
"Why would you want a private room?" Because some people have friends in real life that they want to share with and not worry about random people on the internets messing it up
- Pat Hawks
Bwana: And we can search it, link to it, hop off form it into peoples' other stuff, etc.
- Ken Sheppardson
Adnan: Matt Cutts and Paul were talking about OpenSocial last Friday night... keep your eyes open.
- Ken Sheppardson
On Twitter, I know 50 people are telling other people to listen to Gillmore Gang. On Friendfeed there are several active conversations in realtime *about* the things that are being discussed on the show right now.
- Kevin Fox
Google at one point was far smaller than Yahoo. And then Google came along with better tech. Sometimes you actually can build a better mousetrap.
- Thomas Hawk
see how this realtime is limited to this thread....Guess what else can do that... LISTS!!
- Bwana ☠
friendfeed has metadata because they don't strip it from the incoming sources - twitter strips all of it but the source and the 140 characters
- bear (aka Mike Taylor)
Lists of comments provide much more semantic connectivity than @ signs on Twitter
- Ken Sheppardson
@Bwana we will get use to it or find better ways to use it. It's just day 1 on this.
- Martin Añazco
someone in the chat room just said short statement metadata is useless. LOL.
- Karoli
@Ahmed I was hoping someone would say that.
- Karoli
Scoble's really on today. Making very good points.
- Thomas Hawk
Bwana, that is where I am, but old comments perhaps should be pushed away by new comments... right now, new comments push away the comment box instead.
- Philipp Lenssen
Here it is again...Explain again Robert lol
- Bwana ☠
if you have comments and likes!! you can filter!!!!!
- Ed Dale
Scoble knows how FF works far more than Arrington does.
- Thomas Hawk
meta data is sadly not a celebrity word :-)
- Ed Dale
Ken...but still, what if we want to communicate from FF. I have to leave to reply, can't send likes there. Even if it's not huge, it would center everything on FF
- Karoli
Scobles been put on the spot so many times, he's improved all his arguments over time! :)
- Adnan
SOMEBODY get this link in front of Mike!
- Pat Hawks
Ed - Let's make a cute name for it.. "Meta Meta" or "MoMeta"
- Bwana ☠
I like how the company founder just sits back and let's Scoble explain stuff. Robert is FriendFeed's "Goose", re the Top Gun analogy earlier today.
- Ken Sheppardson
@Karoli I think he is just on the show to make people angry...
- Ahmed
Oohh also, use the scroll function in the browser, activated using the mousewheel/mousebutton3 and just set it to scroll to the bottom of the page, once it hits the last item, it won't scroll until a new item is added by friendfeed.
- Viran
Ed, I disagree. The Twitterati lists combined with lack of track mean it will be elitist. that's how they want it. Like Google weighting toward corporate sites in their results
- Karoli
Sometiemes trolls are nice to have around.
- Thomas Hawk
I'm on Twitter because my site's readers are there, too.
- Chris Baskind
Chrome seems to handle the ajax in a little smoother way on the thread page
- Amyloo
wow, this is long. I like the trend with FF. They just need to give me some numbers that will boost my ego and I'll switch over.
- Nick Gonzalez
Chris: I thought a troll was somebody who tried to incite you into responding.
- Ken Sheppardson
@Philipp Lenssen Same issue here. I need to scroll down constantly to play catch up with the ever growing conversation. Hopefully there will be a fix for that.
- Rolf Schewe
Mike, this could never happen on Twitter.
- Thomas Hawk
So how does the plugging of networks happen? Open Social? Why won't they talk about that?
- Adnan
Yeah a comment button on the BOTTOM of the feed!!!!!!!!!!!!1 yeah! thanks for listening to my request for this earlier today!!!!1 woooo hooo!
- Susan Beebe
twitter and friendfeed work well together
- Ed Dale
REALTIME BLOG -- Try real time comments when people aren't on your blog using IM for the hundreds of millions of people on their desktop
- Angus Logan
So we've went from it'll fail, to "I want this"
- Bwana ☠
Ok must go... hubby wants BEEEEEEEER :) sorry to hit and run
- Susan Beebe
Susan: Yes, when you're viewing an individual post.
- Ken Sheppardson
I will crush the enemy social media and drive them before me and hear the lament of their users.
- Moved to Facebook
The summary: Twitter has already changed the game. FF could maybe change the game, but whether it will remains to be seen. We are still in the early stages of how this stuff works. Obviously, Twitter and FF (and dozens of other services) aren't mutually exclusive.
- Albert Willis
I hated the way it rendered on the iPhone
- Karoli
will be fun to read while listening to the recording, though
- Amyloo
I do agree with Arrington: realtime FF is nice, but is it the game changer that Steve Gilmore's post implied? Not yet--at least not for most people.
- Albert Willis
less than a month... and with full keyboard shortcuts!
- Jérôme Flipo
You need to promote it to your niches - Thomas to Photographer for example :-)
- Ed Dale
I like how a comment thread is also a topic oriented chat room that can be archived and linked to unlike traditional chat room conversations that disappear once you close them.
- Rolf Schewe
Philipp: Each person could eal with them individually: block
- Ken Sheppardson
Everybody can make their own judgement what's spam
- Ken Sheppardson
Rolf - Yeah this is a lot more IRC-feeling isn't it.
- Mitch
I've had this running as the lead items on my Flickr page all day. I'm trying to promote FF at Flickr and other photography related places as much as I can. Love seeing great photos on FF.
- Thomas Hawk
is direct message here a new thing, or just something i never noticed?
- Amyloo
this doesnt auto scroll on Mac/Firefox FYI ... i have to keep scrolling to catch up
- Garys Wine
Spam is simple - dont follow everyone - follow people you know
- Ed Dale
Track = "friends:kshep or term1 or term2 or term3 or" as a filter
- Ken Sheppardson
@Daniel Boehmisch I thought so, others may disagree, but I am going to give it a try over the next few days and see how smooth it runs...but I agree a dedicated app would probably be better
- Jeffrey Marsh
Watching this on post on Twit.tv while watching it on Friendfeed. Yo Dawg...
- Eric @ CSTechcast.com
there's been very little spam in FF. When you do see it it's almost sort of fun.
- Thomas Hawk
Well, Ed, but in threads like this you see everybody. Not just the folks you're following.
- Ken Sheppardson
Ed, I was talking about specific comments in this thread, which show even when you're not following the person... and I didn't notice any block button when hovering over a name.
- Philipp Lenssen
All thats missing is a realtime list of whos all currently viewing this page.
- Tony, Paradox of FF
@Bwana are going to make a tutorial on how to use Filters???
- Ahmed
lol 16 new results on "Gillmor Gang" on Twitter since Kevin Fox posted it.... and 200 new comments here. We win.
- Bwana ☠
Twhirl client shipping tomorrow: looking foward to see what it does!
- Patrick Chanezon
I tell you what, next time I liveblog something, I'm just opening up a FF thread and going to town.
- Phil G
I've managed to read everything, but could not parse the voice. will have to listen to recording
- Amyloo
Editable chat rooms ... the wave of the future!
- Garys Wine
I'm with Andrew Keen on this one. I find this all hard to understand, and therefore tiresome. So there. I want something simple and compelling
- Francine Hardaway
from IM
yes, we have the swarm/river/whatever... now we need to figure out how to give users the ability to manage scarce attention.
- Brian Roy
You can scan friendfeed but how do you scan a discussion thread such as this?
- Adnan
Jérôme, you're giving me an idea about animated ASCII art here :)
- Philipp Lenssen
will this thin thread just keep digging down until it hits china?
- clewellyn
That window issue sounds like it would be tough on the Android
- Keith Barrett
Shoot. I have to go to work yet. Is lunch over yet?
- Ken Sheppardson
im still using cleaner friendfeed V2 bc the beta cleaner doesnt look much better than the beta ui, aside from what V2 already does.
- Tony, Paradox of FF
I tried the FF Facebook app. 1. It looks abandoned, and 2. I see Facebook as a subset of my overall social content and FriendFeed as my hub.
- Rolf Schewe
We had similar problems with the last Beta Friendfeed release, Digg says "This link does not appear to be a working link. Please check the URL and try again." Friendfeed might be sending the wrong http header for Digg.
- Philipp Lenssen
63283 chars of minified javascript: nice job Bret!
- Patrick Chanezon
digg submit didn't work, even with link from friendfeed.com (not beta)
- jcunwired
"Twitter is currently down for unscheduled maintenance". We did it, didn't we?
- Jérôme Flipo
Very good post, I'm going to be upgrading to a smartphone in the coming year. All my area can get is Verizon so the only choice I have right now is a WinMo phone or Blackberry. I've tried playing around with the phones in the store and the user experience is absolutely dreadful. Also the prospect of my expensive phone never updating is a major turn off. I like the application support for WinMo when you can find it but seems like Blackberry will offer the better user experience.
- Bryan
Anyone else care to chime in on there experiences? I'm curious to know what others thinks of the two platforms.
- Bryan
I'm in the same boat as you, Michael, and also looking at the same unit. At least Verizon left the WiFi antenna turned on...
- MVB (Grinch of FF)
I installed 6.1 on my Moto Q9H a few months ago and am pleased with the performance. I really miss having a touch screen so I will be upgrading phones but it will definitely be a Windows Mobile based device. My wife has a Crackberry and I hate it. I really like what I've seen of the Treo Pro but with no contract price, it's way too expensive.
