Very smart move by eBay. Did they really announce 2 acquisitions this morning? Is the DBA deal real or just still rumor? - Rob Diana
yes dba is confirmed on the call too - Allen Stern
The deepening credit crisis calls for a Bill Me Much Later service. Feel free to steal my idea and run with it. ;) - Aviv
I am now waiting to hear about eBay Layaway, the new way to pay. - Rob Diana
+1 Rob - Charlie Anzman
Is this going to mean that Amazon won't be using Bill Me Later now? Isn't the reason why Amazon doesn't use PayPal anymore because of ebay? - Mathew Ballard
Mathew - they briefly (very briefly) touched on that saying that they value the amazon relationship greatly - but that was about it. - Allen Stern
Rob: Forgive my self-promotion, but I couldn't quite understand the DBA.dk deal either, so I did a little research and now I think I know why they boiught it. http://www.thebetanews.com/eba... - Dennis Bjørn Petersen via twhirl
So, eBay is looking to rev up Kijiji. Not a bad strategy actually. - AJ Kohn

“So my post on Facebook dropping 20-50% of app traffic gets ignored, but Scoble's resume post makes front page of Techmeme? Makes no sense.”

Watch, now that it's getting attention on FF it will make TechMeme. I totally don't get TechMeme. A lot of news doesn't get reported there. - Jesse Stay via twhirl
TechMeme has a heavy bias towards previous sources. So, Scoble has the reputation already and his posts generally get considered. Because other "big-name" blogs pick up the story, it hits techmeme. I do not totally understand techmeme, but that is the general pattern I have seen. - Rob Diana
Essentially. If I want to hit techmeme, I've got to write it on Mashable or a "known" blog. Personally I take almost no stock in Techmeme anymore. - Ben Parr
+1 Rob - TechMeme just doesn't know you yet, but your post was really interesting & informative! Great work. - Sarah Perez

@Tom Beardshaw responded: "Hey Alexander - good point. I think your description of the attention economy is spot on, but perhaps we should also think about the contexts and purposes of communication. I don’t think that substance will die… in fact it may become more important than ever, depending on how people’s values shift (and it seems that within the US election, the electorate is shifting towards placing more value on substance - let’s see how they vote, anyway)." - Alexander van Elsas
I answered: @Tom I hope you are right. I’m not so optimistic. Media is trained to think in terms of sound bytes. It’s a process that is hard to fix, unless we fix it ourselves. If all we do is go for the one-liners then nothing will change. If we are willing to explore, to get our hands on substance, which means investing time, then things will change eventually. - Alexander van Elsas

Strands and FriendFeed aren't competitors as much as they are complimentary. Also, Strands' operation Mainstream is quite a good idea, if they can pull it off. - Louis Gray
Louis, honestly, I don't see myself using more than one lifestreaming service but I do see a lot of promise in what Strands does even now and hopefully the community will help add some more reasons to use it once they are open. - Svetlana Gladkova via twhirl
Well, the problem is: You want to show your friends what you like and what you care about. If you filter the "likes" out, it's probably senseless. I mean I don't do this for telling myself I like something. All of my followers should know it. - Ryo
@Ryo: Quite reasonable but the reasoning may be that they wanted to offer ability for anyone viewing your profile to see your tastes - what you like (without making everyone to take a look at that), what you dislike, etc. Could be a nice functionality if you are really interested that much in some particular user. - Svetlana Gladkova via twhirl
It's not just *what* your friends share too, it's learning their tastes over time...like knowing that Louis likes 50's rock...because he's old ;) j/k - drew olanoff
drew, that's obviously an interesting idea but it will only work for a close circle of friends. But if it could help build a list of topics (or tags) for every user to help others find the people they will actually be interested in listening to, this could be truly great. - Svetlana Gladkova via twhirl

Very good point about soundbites/headlines. I think the problem may be that people stop at the headline because they feel they do not have enough time to read the whole article. Of course, you could learn more by reading the whole thing. - Rob Diana
To me it feels like a deadlock situation. Media is trained to talk in sound bytes to draw attention, we seem to take less time to get into the substance (that's one of the side effects of the attention economy). Just look at the presidential election going on now. No substance, all one-liners. And that is to acquire the most powerful job in the world. Scary. It can only change if we change our consuming behavior. - Alexander van Elsas

For those wanting to go a little old school, solutions to the SICP exercises. If you do not know what SICP is, think of it as an intro to programming but using Scheme (a variant/subset of Lisp) as the language. - Rob Diana

I dream about coding quite often, it was a really bad habit in high school. I'd code all night in my sleep and couldn't get out of bed until I imagined coding a wake up routine. Then I'd realize that all of that crap I coded while asleep didn't happen and have to do it all over again. At least it went faster the second time around. - xero
In my MUD days, I'd dream about being on the MUDs. When the alarm clock went off, I'd reach for it with both hands and try to log on. - MiniMage
