If you were to pop into a record store and actually buy a vinyl album, what would you buy? Trying to come up with ideas for my brother's Christmas present (his girlfriend is buying him a turntable).
That's a hard choice since I like almost all music. But probably an 80's pop album, like Duran Duran or Huey Lewis and the News. But then I might also buy classic rock like some of Jimi Hendrix, I bet Hendrix kicks total butt on vinyl.
- Ken
The Dukes of Stratosphear vinyl reissue. Or Elvis Costello's Secret, Profane & Sugarcane, which I believe has some tracks that aren't on digital or CD versions of the album.
- Spidra Webster
Oh. I thought you meant new issue vinyl. For old issue, I think I'd get him one of the great concept albums. Concept albums were programmed to work with the break in-between for flipping the album over. It's not quite the same on CD or digital.
- Spidra Webster
It's hard for me because we have a pretty large vinyl collection and part of the fun is browsing through the rows of records for a true gem, so I'd actually suggest maybe a copy of one of your favourite albums of all time and a gift certificate to a local record store. I'm normally not into gift cards substituting for choosing something of your own, but for me so much of vinyl is about the tactile experience.
- joey
a tie between "Chips From The Chocolate Fireball" and "The Dark Side Of The Moon"...or maybe "Wish You Were Here", not sure which. kind of off DSOTM lately.
- Joe Silence is not Santa
The LP isn't "Chips From the Chocolate Fireball". That's the name for the CD that compiled both "25 O'Clock" and "Psonic Psunspot". Not only have those now been reissued as separate CDs, but the original EP/LP have been reissued. Not sure if they're only part of the deluxe box set or whether you can get the LPs separately. Probably only box set.
- Spidra Webster
Picture discs are awesome too. I used to have one of the soundtrack to Miami Vice, like this one: http://cgi.ebay.com/RARE-JA...
- Ken
@Spidra: that would explain why i can't find it! my cousin had "Psonic Psunspot" as a cassette and that's how i first heard it.
- Joe Silence is not Santa
I liked flipping through records and finding obscure 70's rock that never made it to CD. I once bought a Santana album for $2 just because the picture of Carlos was so funny.
- Rodfather
Great concept albums: Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, The Rise & Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars.
- Spidra Webster
There are other albums I think of as "concept albums" even though they're not gimmicky because the songs and tracklist work so well.
- Spidra Webster
Rodfather is right that it's great to target albums that have not (yet) been reissued on CD.
- Spidra Webster
I don't know what kind of new releases you can still buy out there... if you buy used make sure the seller tells you there is no scratches because that really sucks getting a new LP that skips.
- Ken
I started a collection about 12 years ago or so and had quite a few and had a turntable stereo thing.. ended up giving them all away, I just never listened to them.. lazy me... my computer is everything now.
- Ken
Excellent idea, Bren. I knew I wanted to get him at least one Beatles album but was torn on which ones to consider. Revolver was my favorite Beatles vinyl as a kid. :D Thank you everyone for all your suggestions! I'm going to print this entire conversation out so when I hit the store, I don't forget anything. LOL This is going to be a lot of fun. I haven't browsed through vinyl in years...
- tinypants - Hagitha of FF
Any idea what kind of music your brother likes? That would make this whole thing a lot easier.
- Curtiss Grymala
My son likes 70s rock vinyl, Neil Young seems high on the list. He pokes around in used record stores all the time looking for stuff. Most reputable used record stores won't sell anything that is not 100% pristine (unless it is clearly labelled as not).
- Brian Sullivan
I bought an LP by "The Big 3" at the Sally Army store because it was Mama Cass's debut and I hadn't heard it since it first came out. Never made it to cassette or CD as far as I know. I have several hundred LPs and a few 45s. Some of them only exist on vinyl. Those are keepers.
- m9m, Crone of FriendFeed
Tom Petty has a box set coming out on vinyl...it may be out now. Im gonna pick it up it looks good.
- Mary Carmen
I suggest going to a thrift store and just buying up a ton of records.
- Admiral Anika
Mary Carmen, you're my kinda gal. :D Anika, I didn't even think to hit a thrift store! LOL I feel like a dunce.
- tinypants - Hagitha of FF
Id buy some blues - John Lee Hooker on vinyl...
- WarLord
The thrift store around the corner from me has hundreds of vinyl in very good condition for like 50 cents an album. I'd buy many of them for the WTFness of many of them, but we find a lot of gems in thrift stores.
- Admiral Anika
Around here you would be wasting your time at thrift type stores -- all the records will have been picked over by the time you get there unless you are lucky or become a regular. What would be left would be damaged, undesirable or both.
- Brian Sullivan
Well if he's a DJ, then I'll definitely get him a real turntable like the Technics SL1200Mk2 http://www.panasonic.com/consume... - and if he's really into DJ'ing then of course you should buy him some kick-ass electronica LPs that are not issued in other formats :)
- See-ming Lee 李思明 SML
Wow - it is on CD. Listen to "Young Girl's Lament". But I'm glad I have the LP anyway.
- m9m, Crone of FriendFeed
Todd Rundgren "Something/Anything",..maybe one of the greatest albums ever and its a 2 disc album,...download some of it on Limewire for a listen,..incredible stuff and you'll be surprised how many songs you know.
- Sheri Kelly
I would get him something where the cover art on CD doesn't compare to what was available in vinyl/ Some thoughts are Pink Floyd's Wish You Were Here, Jethro Tull's Thick as a Brick, Rolling Stones' Sticky Fingers.
- April Russo (app103)
Grateful Dead - Workingmans Dead or The Band's 2nd album (self-titled). Two albums that just have to be heard on LP
- Philip Tomlinson
I agree with Anika. Just buy a bunch of really cheap ones, try to find some that might actually be quality and others that are for comedy sake.
- Robert DeBord
Definitely depends on what he likes in music. Something classic, though, to keep with the vinyl feeling.
- Martha
I still have a couple of John Denver vinyl albums. Also a Saturday Night Fever album, an orchestral album of superhero theme music and a couple of Barry Manilow albums.
- Jason Huebel
You really can't lose with any vinyl. Vinyl just sounds better.
- Jason Huebel
I'd love to have one of those new laser turntables that doesn't use a needle. (they are pretty popular in Japan) Needles eventually wear out the grooves and the laser doesn't, so it helps preserve your records. They are awfully expensive, though. http://www.elpj.com/main.html
- April Russo (app103)
This one is VERY hard for me. I had no problem picking I, Robot over Reservoir Dogs because it sucked less, but this one I'm stumped. They were both good for different reasons. I even own both. I think I'll go with Lebowski since I watch it more often.

Question: Mozy or Carbonite? I'm considering paying for online backup.
- Eric Geller
Frankly, I haven't tried Carbonite yet. But Mozy isn't impressing me yet.
- Veronica
I'm 10GB into my initial carbonite backup. So far, so good...
- Thomas
from FreshFeed
Carbonite looks to be the best bet simply because I've heard less complaining about it. I don't need external drive backup, but I do need unlimited, low-cost, reliable, redundant storage.
- Eric Geller
Carnonite, has a free 2 month trial if you use the promo code, "twit" you should compare both! Leo will like it ;)
- Fee501st
Yeah, I'll probably do that. Do they ask for credit card information?
- Eric Geller
not until the 2 months are over, i belive
- Fee501st
I like that Carbonite backs up incrementally. Does Mozy do that?
- Eric Geller
I gave up on mozy after trying to upload data for over a week. Fail after fail after fail.
- Robert DeBord
Actually, it doesn't tell you, but it will pick up where it left off.
- Laura Norvig
20 GB? Wow. I just use Mozy for ongoing work. I archive off anything that large and stay under 2 GB per machine. I have several TB of data that's too big for online backups that gets saved via VHD images. So I have never tried that much data over a home broadband connection before.
- Dave Friedel
If you're keeping it under 2GB per machine, why not use dropbox? The free account is 2GB...
- Thomas
I used Carbonite > a year ago and bailed when my HDD developed a bad sector Carbonite couldn't get past, leading to the Endless Backup Of Accomplishing Nothing. Switched to Mozy, and still use it; have about 85 GB backed up at this point. Biggest advantage of Mozy over Carbonite is that if you ever need to do a massive restore, Mozy will send your data on DVD. They charge for the service, but I had to do it once, and it was so worth it. Would have taken forever to restore that much data via the tubes.
- David Gaw
Give CrashPlan a whirl - ok - I'll stop cyberstalking now.
- Matthew Dornquast
I was referring to Dave talking about him staying at under 2GB per machine... :)
- Thomas
I have used Carbonite for over a year now, 70K+ files over that time just over 80 gig never a hic-cup
- Robert Anstett
If you quit Mozy, you will make iJustine sad. :(
- Dave Friedel
If Carbonite was good enough for Han Solo, it's good enough for you...
- Thomas
Yes, but Carbonite will give you hibernation sickness afterward. Then you're out of it for a little while and everyone gets delusions of grandeur.
- Dave Friedel
I don't, mostly because I drank a lot when I was younger and it makes me feel not so good now. So I drink coffee which doesn't do that.
- Robert DeBord
from iPhone
Wife and I are talking about it because the company she works for just created/started selling one and she doesn't understand why I like this one but not most others. She thinks it's my age because I drank them when I was younger but not now. So I want to see who and what ages like/dislike energy drinks :)
- Robert DeBord
from iPhone
I don't usually drink them; my main reason is that they taste terrible. It's like a cross between grapefruit juice, pixie stix, and watered down Pepto-Bismol. Every once in a while (maybe once a year, if not once every couple of years), I'll be in a situation where I need to perk up quickly after being awake for way too long, and I'll drink a couple to get through a few hours. The last time I did that was when I was moving.
- Mark Trapp
If they tasted better, I'd probably drink them more often (maybe once a month), but the secondary reasons of it not providing actual sustainable energy like sleeping/eating/exercising and the huge cost are still limiting factors to regular usage.
- Mark Trapp
I drink them, usually about 2 cans a day. But only if I've been up the night before, I feel like I playing games, or I just feel like it in the morning..kinda like how people drink coffee in the morning. But, yeah, they do taste like crap..so does coffee ;)
- Itachi
I don't drink energy drinks because my body doesn't react well to Ginseng and does even worse with Echinacea. Aren't many that don't have either one.
- Kevin Fox
Do you guys drink coffee or tea or do you just not need the energy? And Maxamad, I'd definitely disagree about the taste of coffee ;)
- Robert DeBord
from iPhone
Kevin, I've never heard that before. If you don't mind me asking, what do they do to your body?
- Robert DeBord
from iPhone
Mark I totally agree about the short term boost. All the worse when you crash after it!

"They're the vanguard of music, a post-rock think tank, the absolute state of the art. They've also been righteous, giving a confused music world a moral center. So we sit, wearing headphones and frozen grins, and continue denying that guilty, nagging feeling that actually, in some ways, when you think about it…Radiohead kinda blow. Few, save for Liam or Noel Gallagher, dare speak this heresy aloud, instead couching it in longings for a "back-to-basics" album or a "return to form," despite the fact that Radiohead are at their critical and commercial peak. Civil (by Internet standards) discussions reside on Yahoo message boards with titles like "Why Did Radiohead Become Dull and Boring?" But while such almost apologetic criticism typically hides online or at water coolers, sometimes the elephant isn't in the room, but onstage."
- Derrick
from Bookmarklet
except for one mainstream charting song, I always filed Radiohead away with The Pixies, Velvet Underground, New York Dolls, The Residents. Entirely unlistenable for real people, but inspiration crack for real artists/musicians who can build off them and make some listenable stuff.
- Matthew DeVries
They've had more than a few things here and there that I've found enjoyable. Karma Police, Optimistic, There There to name a few songs. Haven't really given their latest albums a listen.
- Alex Scoble
I really loved OK Computer but found Kid A and Amnesiac hard to get into...In Rainbows brought me back into the fold, and I liked Yorke's solo album more than I thought. One thing I do have to give to them is that they truly make albums as opposed to hits or singles. Remember albums?
- Derrick
I'm pretty much an all out Radiohead fanboy. I can't think of many songs I dislike, but there's a ton I love. This article coming from Spin makes me laugh a little though. Not to talk smack at them just because they're talking poorly of Radiohead, but I can't remember when the last time I even looked at a Spin mag, let alone bought one. Different strokes and all that, but to me this is like Rolling Stone criticizing Radiohead... big deal.
- Robert DeBord
When I first heard some of Kid A (not long after it came out) I hated it; it took going back and listening to The Bends before I started liking them. I just listened to Kid A again yesterday and didn't mind it anymore, but I didn't instantly love it either. Maybe after a few more listens? I think they were ahead of the curve on that one. MDV - what are you talking about? Pixies, New...

- Jandy, ConcertMaven of FF
Hmm. Loved Pablo Honey and The Bends but simply could not listen to OK Computer. Never bothered since, but still love the CDs I have
- WorldofHiglet
This stuff is subjective. The Spin piece is silly, IMO. Some folks think Radiohead blows, some folks hang on every note.
- Kurt Starnes
Radiohead is mentioned in that best ever rock conversation enough to warrant their inclusion in that conversation, which means you'll see as many if not more vocal haters as you do for a band that everybody (but me) knows blows. That is just the way it goes.
- Michael W. May
Jandy - I'd hardly consider you a member of the unwashed masses. Even though you don't play an instrument, it's obvious you have the ear of an artist and an ability to appreciate on an artists level, to get to a lot of things most of us can't.
- Matthew DeVries
Sorry, Akiva, but unlike Oasis, Radiohead actually makes good music.
- Alex Scoble
You don't understand the point, Alex. I'm not talking about the music. Like Oasis, for Radiohead, it's become more about the band than the music. Radiohead producing music is a side-effect of them simply being Radiohead.
- Akiva Moskovitz
Akiva - I think one could also make your argument for The Rolling Stones, Grateful Dead, The Beatles, Pink Floyd, etc. or any great band. Radiohead being Radiohead is not exclusive of Radiohead making great music, IMO.
- Kurt Starnes
Again, I wasn't writing about the quality of the music. And I never wrote that my correlation was limited to just Oasis.
- Akiva Moskovitz
When did Radiohead get 'dull and boring'? If you think that you just don't get them. They've been my favourite band for years and I can't see that changing. :-)
- Kol Tregaskes
I 'get' Radiohead and have been a fan since The Bends. But I do find them dull and boring now. OK Computer was their last really thrilling release. The only people who seemed to really like Amnesiac and Kid A are people who have never heard of Warp Records.
- Akiva Moskovitz
You forgot about Hail to the Thief...which I thought was a pretty solid album.
- Alex Scoble
Then again, Akiva probably suffers from myxomatosis.
- Alex Scoble
That came after Amnesiac and Kid A. You have to remember that a lot of people didn't get into Radiohead until Kid A and Amnesiac. And, to me, Hail to the Thief sounded like an odds-and-ends collection rather than a full album. In Rainbows, on the other hand, was pretty damned good. But it's still just a pale shade of what Radiohead used to be capable of.
- Akiva Moskovitz
I kinda read through most of the above comments. Do I get a cookie now?
- Micah Wittman
Also, have you seen the dude's eye? WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEIRD.
- Akiva Moskovitz
I've been listening to Radiohead since Pablo Honey, and I like their newer stuff better, although OK Computer is still my favorite. One thing I do agree with: their best days may very well be behind them, since it sounds like they're never going to do another album.
- Victor Ganata
The cynical side of me wonders if Radiohead's choice to not do an album has more to do with their inability to put together a good one than anything else.
- Akiva Moskovitz
And if your choice is between putting out something that isn't up to snuff or doing nothing, I'd be fine with them doing nothing.
- Alex Scoble
Thom Yorke does sound totally burnt out. So that may very well be true.

"In the last few years Chicago has established itself as a spot of smoky supremacy, and Smoque BBQ is reason number one I don't feel compelled to return to Memphis. I've written about the glories of this shack on Serious Eats before, so I won't go in to much detail about it here. But, for those who protest Chicago is a sauce drenched smoked meat wasteland, except for a small layer of caramelized lacquer, the sauce on Smoque's ribs is served on the side. Their brisket is certainly the best this side of Texas, and the quality of Smoque's balanced sides, save the chili drenched tamales from Germantown Commissary, are unparalleled in the informal barbecue world."

- Stephan Planken
I think this may be a misquote -- the way I read it they will support only SSD for boot.
- Brian Sullivan
It actually seems like they're going the Apple route. They don't seem to be targeting this as a general purpose OS that you can run on anything you want. (Although, like OS X, with enough creative hacking, you'll probably still get it to run on unsupported hardware.)
- Victor Ganata
I understood it as the devices will have small amounts of flash onboard to support boot/OS only, and other storage will be handled via removable devices (SD cards, USB keys, etc)
- Chris Reichow
When Apple ditched the floppy disk and first went to USB, the response was a lot like this. Interesting, indeed.
- Louis Gray
Hell, if you can make SSD's the same capacity as my hard disks AND the same price, I'll drop all complaints :)

This is very similar to what Microsoft had in mind. Only instead of a browser it would be similar to an OS that would only act as an RDP client to access your desktop that would be located on their servers. i've seen a lot of employers taking advantage of the economy and doing things to employees that they'd never be able to get away with in a good market.
- Bill Kinney
I'm seeing a lot of that in job listings, too. Like the pay rate above, or the classic 36 hour work week so you aren't full time and don't qualify for benefits.
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)

- Loc
Seems a lot of companies are trying to really screw potential employees over (aka "better bang for buck" or "making best use of economy") because they know there's so many people without work. Someone should collect a list of companies doing this. In a couple years it'll be good to know which companies are scummy and don't care about their employees so as to avoid them when things are tilting back into the employee's favor.

I don't believe in taking the lane unless I absolutely need to for safety. The fact is that it's rude to expect people to queue up behind you if the fastest you can pedal is 15 mph (which it is, in my case). A better solution would be a major overhaul of our infrastructure nationally. It would be nice if gov't on all levels acknowledged that bikes, skateboards, rollerskates, wheelchairs, etc. are TRANSPORTATION and as such need accommodation in traffic planning.
- Spidra Webster
While an overhaul would be awesome, it would take forever. In between now and then they need to AT LEAST start mandating these plans into newly developed areas and new construction areas. At least start with those in between now and however long it takes them to start revamping whats already in place.

The only accompaniment that the Bacon Attack! needed (incidentally, even in the middle of a sentence, the Bacon Attack! should always be punctuated with an exclamation point—it's just that kind of a sandwich) was a batch of homemade B&B pickles to eat between bites and help cut through some of the richness."

I think Will is very talented but I only like about 1/4 of what he's been cast in or cast himself in. However, when he is on he is very very funny. (By the way, I wasn't choosing. If I had to choose, I'd probably choose Carell as well.)

Kol - You're not the only one. I find Will Ferrell even more annoying and unfunny than I find Jim Carrey. Can't stand either of them. Steve Carrell is okay, but I'm not a huge fan. He's certainly better than Will Ferrell, though.

I share Kol's opinion as well. Life's too short to waste more than about 30 seconds at a time watching Will Ferrell. The other guy, maybe 40 seconds and I'm done.

What sick set of minds came up with this? And I thought our reality TV was bad =/ I stopped 1 minute in, once I figured out what was going on.

I don't think 'Punked' ever had anyone getting shot at o_O
