Fresh cherries + plain yogurt is surprisingly good!
0.jpe
I like to add walnuts into yogurt and then add a packet of Splenda. Tastes like a treat, but quite good for you. - Matt Cutts
Would you classify it as an "Eureka!" moment? - ianf ⌘
Yogurt is also great with bluberries and maple syrup drizzles on top - Bob Morris (polizeros)
Splenda is not food Matt :). The surprising thing about this combination is that the cherries make the plain yogurt taste rather sweet. - Paul Buchheit
Paul, you should try and make your own yogurt -- it's not supposed to be sour. You need a spoon or two of yogurt to inoculate bacterials in fresh milk and keep it at 38C for 8 hours (more than that and it gets too much sour). I made my own yogurt maker with an Arduino (plus relay and temp sensor), a 40W lightbulb and a temporary box made out of some polystyrene I had at home. Don't spend money on commercial yogurt makers, they simply suck (no control of the temperature whatsoever) - alieb
The yogurt isn't really sour, though a little tangy, which is good. (the Straus yogurt is quite good) The cherries make it sweet though, and without any refined sugar or splenda or anything like that. - Paul Buchheit
do they have Stonyfield on the left coast? http://www.stonyfield.com/ - they're my favorite - and their french vanilla is awesome w/ real maple syrup and/or fruit - Chris Heath
Paul, didn't you, at some point in the past, accidentally make yogurt when you left a cup with a little bit of milk leftover sitting out? - April Buchheit
Straus is sooo great. I'd love to tour their dairy farm. They used to carry it at Trader Joe's and I would get it there all the time. Now we get Mountain High from Costco which is good but not as good as Straus. My kid has plain yogurt and berries for breakfast every day (frozen berries most of the year). - Laura Norvig
I buy it from Andronico's. - Paul Buchheit

Just got done at the accountant's office. I like him and he's good at what he does, but I swear he could talk the ears off a corn stalk.
That's like this lady I have a meeting with tomorrow. She needs to learn to economize her words. - Shevonne
Today's topics included oil reserves, solar and wind energy, the Social Security Administration, his service in Vietnam, mine and Dave's allowance structure, his first motorcycle, and his 1968 Bumblebee. At least the allowance structure was financial in nature, and hopefully the SSA discussion put a bee in his bonnet to finish my dad's extended return from last year, so all in all not a totally lost hour. - FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
My head just started spinning - Shevonne
Mine hasn't finished spinning, but I'll just chalk it up to needing to eat my lunch. - FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
Good line, Tina! (And, dare I say, very "southern"?) - Stephen Mack
I almost ended it with "bless his heart", Stephen ;-) - FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
Heh heh! What kind of accent do you have? - Stephen Mack
Depends on who you ask. To people around here I sound like a 'yankee'. To people from the northern US I either sound like I'm from the midwest or (if tired and/or angry) from the south. To people from abroad I sound like a crazy American =D - FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
Judging from the (very few) times I've heard you on webcam, you don't sound Southern to me. More accentless, which probably means Midwestern, since that's where I'm from. My mom grew up in rural Alabama - now HER family has a Southern accent. ;) - Jandy, ConcertMaven of FF
LOL! There are umpteen kinds of southern accents: Charleston SC vs eastern TN vs Mississippi vs New Orleans are all unique and so many in between. - FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
I am frum Alabama those SC peeple all tawk funny. Bless they hearts - Moved to Facebook from IM
See, in SC we'd say "ya'll all talk funny". Crazy dialects! - FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
I was born in South Carolina but only lived there till I was 2. However we would go back every now and then to visit or vacation and I always loved just listening to everyone talk. Sometimes I would pick up some of the accent while there, but that was mostly acting background more than anything else. I have to say I liked this post mostly for the "talk the ears off the corn stalk" line, which made me smile! - Rachel Lea Fox
Tina, true! We used to drive down to Florida from St. Louis twice a year to vacation and visit relatives (most Alabama relatives relocated to Pensacola), and I swear there was a line right at Tennessee where the accents suddenly started. Verifiable by McDonald's employees. :) Your accent, when it comes out, is a lot softer. - Jandy, ConcertMaven of FF
the expression "talk the ears off a corn stalk" is new to me. Charming.. - ron k jeffries
I heard another expression for this same type of person last night "he could talk the horns off a billy goat". Idiomatic turns of phrase always intrigue me. - FFing Enigma (aka Tina)

Guerilla bootstrapping aka bootstrapping for people who don’t have a million bucks. - Anthony Feint
Bootstrapping on $5k? How about $250, Canadian? :( - Chris, Taskerrific Guy
on $250 you say? Not impossible but hard. It all depends on how much you can do yourself. - Anthony Feint
Well, obviously VPS is out, there's no way I'd be able to afford it. And right now, so long as I don't hit the limits of the shared hosting, and I cut back on features... - Chris, Taskerrific Guy
I can do the development side of things just fine, that's what I do. It's handling all the business stuff that's my problem. - Chris, Taskerrific Guy
business side of stuff is easy - the most important thing is getting your concept to market. And a VPS on Slicehost costs like $20 a month - Anthony Feint
Are you factoring in the conversion rate? Remember, this is $250 Canadian, which right now is lucky to be worth $200 US. And I'm far from even private beta. So that $20 a month is wasted money for a while. - Chris, Taskerrific Guy
OTOH if that $20/mo VPS lets me throw on my own custom services, that might be good. But I sure as hell won't be profitable to afford the service after 6-10 months, and that's if I'm lucky. - Chris, Taskerrific Guy
And, it's no sale if they don't support .NET. I'm not going to delay things even further just to rewrite everything I've done so far. - Chris, Taskerrific Guy

I'm a bit of a PHP guy myself, but I'd not give up ASP.NET MVC for the world. Not even for Ruby on Rails. - Chris, Taskerrific Guy

Research by business scholars has shown that, when it comes to major innovations, the first movers rarely find the greatest success. They’re usually outmaneuvered by the copycats — the companies that follow in the innovators’ footsteps but end up dominating the market because of their stronger managerial and marketing skills. Conservative innovation follows a different path, a third way. Conservative innovators neither pioneer a new technology nor copy it. Rather, they combine it with an older technology to create a different sort of product altogether. And, often, it’s exactly the product that today’s customers actually need, want, and are willing to pay for. - Nilesh

Testing a niche before developing your own product, Which method to choose?: Guys the 30DC way is to create a blog, get it ranked high, drive organic/paid traffic, and see if the affiliate product converts.
The other way is - create a squeeze page. Drive traffic via PPC to squeeze page, build a small email list, launch email autoresponder sequence, convert to affiliate product sales. It seems one advantage of the 2nd way is that it's less effort consuming and faster too. Which method should I choose? Would love to hear how other 30DCers are testing niche viability, and pros/cons of each method. Many thanks gang :-) - Ritesh Lal
Well explained Ritesh! That is like Mass Control to the dot! You rock! I think those are probably the best ways as well. For extremely popular markets...I have used forums to sample my market...and then do tests to see what sort of traffic my competitors sites are getting. Then use common since to improve their products. Not the best way but pretty easy for me! Though I recommend your ways. :) - TrafficBug
The other advantage of the 2nd method seems to be that you end up with a highly targeted email list, to which you can occasionally send out promotions of other products over their life time. One of my non 30DC partners asked today, "So why spend time building a blog, and spend up to 2-3 month promoting and ranking it, just to test a niche?" I didn't have a satisfactory answer unfortunately :( Anyone wants to help me out? - Ritesh Lal
I think it depends on the niche, the product, the target customer, and your long term goals (if any) for the niche. My product requires some level of trust, and is my day job. I guess for me it's more about branding. I know the $ is there! At this point my focus is social/relationship/forum stuff. Understanding the competition, what works, what doesn't, AND knowing what the customer isn't getting from them will be critical for me. I'll probably try PPC to test hard to come by keywords! - DaleK
Thanks for your very well thought out comments Dale, big T :-), and Sean. Dale: I totally agree. If you know that the $ is there, then niche test is already over, and you need to have a rich content blog to engage with your market. Sean: Those are exactly the kinds of rumblings I have been hearing. One of the major guru newsletters recently put out an emergency update saying that readers should no longer be using their squeeze page techniques. - Ritesh Lal
The argument for or against Squeeze pages depends on your own analytics. - Robert Worstell
Sean: What if instead of having squeeze pages with little content, you actually have a 20 pages mini site? E.g a site with sections- Home, About, FAQ, Contact us, Articles. Within the Articles section you could put 15 commissioned or self-written keyword rich articles. The advantage I see is that this mini site is so much less resource intensive compared to a blog, where you have to keep adding posts. The mini-site can be made rich enough to pass the Google test for PPC quality scores and page-ranks... - Ritesh Lal
... I have seen several such examples on the net (mini-sites with high page ranks). So why go for the blog format as your ranking vehicle/sales vehicle, rather than a 20 pages mini-site? Thanks for your patience and hearing me out :) Would love to hear any thoughts out there. I am sure Immediate Edge answers these and other questions, but have to wait a few months, before I can start that subscription ;-) - Ritesh Lal
Wordpress is a PHP script that stores content in it's mySQL database. You can use it to create any type of site you want, squeeze page, mini-site, shopping cart, blog. The advantage is all the code is there for linking one page to another and posting those links on every page, you don't have to write your own code. Tools such as XsitePro can also work for a minisite, but with all the plugins for Wordpress, why use anything else. - California Jerry
Ritesh, I believe that the 30dc recommends the blog format because Google loves blogs. That's probably because blogs are updated on a regular basis. Also, if they're on-topic, Google would I guess regard them as informational rather than just as sales pages. - Isha (Marysia)
Thanks Marysia, you're a treasure trove of info. I did some research of my own after posting my question, and Blogs do seem to better than static sites for google ranking. Caro on 30DC forums says "Robert (GuruBob) who heads the Lab, has done extensive testing. Blogs have demonstrated netting better results more quickly in moving up the search results pages." - Ritesh Lal

I'm a happy camper. I just noticed that one of my sites ranks higher for my primary keyword than the affiliate product page (and its also their primary keyword). Kinda cool.

I finally did it!, took all the advice from 30DC/30DC+ and Immediate Edge and came up with my own product!, at last. This is a very proud day for me!. A big huge thanks to Ed,Dan,Bob and all the others 4 ur help, this stuff works!!. take a look, let me know what you think . - http://www.thetwittertechnique.com/
Elliot my friend! It is so awesome to see your first product! We went through the 30DC together and I haven't talked to you much lately. I guess we have both been very busy! :) Nice looking squeeze page! Let's catch up! - Michael Roberts
Absolutely!, Ive spent so much time on this I forgot to eat and shave, I've lost 100lbs, and the other day my wife had me arrested by animal control, they got reports of a yeti in her home!. Its great to see your Traffic Bug coming out!, you must be very proud too!:). - Elliot Webb
Submitted a PRWeb press release to give it a try, ill let you know how that goes too;)) - Elliot Webb
Many congratulations Elliot! That is a nice sales page & a great-sounding product. - Isha (Marysia)
Your product looks very awesome Elliot. :) Congrats! Would you mind sharing a bit about the process? Do you basically just make a product, set up a sales page and start marketing it right away? Or do you have need to have a main twitter website which you build up first, and then send visitors to your sales page? - Art Y.
Hi Art, are we talking about the process I took to make this product, or are we talking about the process inside The Twitter Technique?. let me know Art and ill get right back to u:) - Elliot Webb
I want to launch a product too, but I'm not sure if it's ok to start up with a sales pages straight away, or whether I need to build a website with traffic first, and then put up a sales page for them to go to... If I can just go straight into product creation and sales, that would be so convenient :) - Art Y.
Oh. I mean the process before you make the product. Like, in the TDC we learn to build up a niche site first, then put up affiliate links, and gradually get a lot of traffic first, then move on to product creation. But I was wondering if you could go into a niche, and immediately start with product creation (if you know what the ppl want already), and then put up a sales page right away without making a separate niche site - Art Y.
Sure Art, you can do it both ways, obviously if you have an established site traffic will be easier to come by, but even if you have just started you can put up a sales page and use PPC to drive traffic to it. Remember what Ed says in the 30DC, PPC is one of the quickest and most targeted ways to get traffic early, sure you have to pay for it, but if you do good keyword research you can find long tail keywords to add to your PPC Ad, that way you only pay around 10-25c a click. - Elliot Webb
I say if the keywords are right, and you know what your customers want, just go for it Art!!, if u need any PPC help let me know ok:) - Elliot Webb
Oic. Ok. Thanks Elliot! I've been wanting to make a product for so long, but my niche site failed miserably because the competition was too tough, so I couldn't use it as a pivot... I'll go directly to the sales page then :) - Art Y.
The only thing about a high competition niche is, if you do use PPC in that same niche your cost per click (CPC) is gonna be huge too, if you have Market Samurai Art check out the estimated adwords price in that first, this will just give you an idea of how much per click you will be paying. - Elliot Webb
Ok. It's not that the competition is high... it's quite low actually... but the thing is, the ppl at the top are extremely strong... and the keyword I'm targeting is strange... I won't rank for the long-tail keyword, but i'm ranking so easily for a short tailed one - Art Y.
Congratulations Elliot! We are proud of you too! - Buff Toast
Thanks Buff!!!:))) - Elliot Webb
Looks pretty good. I'm not buying, because of two facts. 1. On the video I can see that there's 200 followers, but you are following more people than that, which makes it look like the usual follow everybody and hope they follow back (I assume that you go into detail on how to find the right people to follow / target - not really the point). 2. There's no authority... I don't know you from a bar of soap, yet, there's no money back guarantee, so there's too much risk. Not meant to criticize, just my view. - Riaan
good lookin' sales page... let us know how it goes! - Jeremy Weiss
That a completely fair comment Riaan thanks for posting it, my argument to it is would you not want to follow potential customers back?, not only is it great feedback from your market, but you also get to see what they are talking about, maybe even possible product ideas to market to the in the future. And to be honest id rather be a shower cream than a bar of soap if you dont mind;). Good point about the guarantee, ill be looking into that;). Thanks Riaan - Elliot Webb
Sold my first report;))) - Elliot Webb
Fine, You can be a shower cream :) I'm with Ed Dale on this. If I follow everybody, it gets too noisy and I can't meaningfully interact with everybody. Thinking of creating niche specific accounts where I follow more people, but difficult to manage multiple accounts... Maybe use twirl for all niche accounts and tweetdeck only for main, dunno... Just not crazy about idea of following people to get them to follow back, That doesn't necessarily mean I'm right though. Congrats on the sale btw :) - Riaan
Congratulations Elliot on the sale! Very big day for you! *sniff sniff* Our little guy is all grown up now! - Michael Roberts
Brilliant work Elliot, so glad you are getting there, well done, you have taken a big step, we new you could :) congrats on the sale, you will have many more :)) - Tash
Congratulations on the sale! :) - Art Y.
Ya its a great feeling!, thanks to you all for your support over the last few weeks, hopefully by doing this I can give something back to you 30DC members by showing you how I did it all;). I made sale #2 about 10 mins ago!;)) - Elliot Webb

Someday Twitter will support the equiv a "like" in FriendFeed, and retweeting will disappear, which is where it needs to go. Imho.
agree, the re-tweet can add a significant amount of noise - Lou Paglia
I think RT is like "reshare this entry" in FF. It's different (it doesn't put items in your stream but in the FoF one). - Jérôme Flipo
That would be cool...perhaps if a twit gets 'liked' 10 or 20x then it gets sent to everyone? - Cheryl Allin from twhirl
People who follow me see the things I like. No?? Do I completely not understand this? - Dave Winer
I never use "Reshare" -- which I think of as a "pass by value" -- it creates another entity, rather than just a pointer, which is what "Like" does. - Dave Winer
Re-Tweet is useful as a way for content to move from one social graph to another. The equivalent in FF is the Like... Dave got it right. - Brian Roy
Whew. We ought to start a wiki somewhere to translate concepts between the various systems, to see which ideas need to percolate where. Twitter is desperately in need of some *simple* tweaks. If they won't do them, maybe Identi.ca will. And FriendFeed is desperately in need of a Lite product that just does what Twitter does, plus the things Twitter doesn't that FriendFeed does (if you can follow that twisty maze). - Dave Winer
RT is required, because a "like feed" would be optional, no one would watch it. RT=forced viewing, thus stories span the net fast. w/o RT, twitter=facebook's poke, vampire bite, snowball tossing apps. RT IS the power of twitter - Matthew DeVries
Let me summarize: The killer app in this space, imho is FriendFeed Lite. (And please support changes.xml and weblogs.com compatible pinging so I don't feel I'm undermining the common infrastructure by supporting you guys.) - Dave Winer
Matthew: when I click "like" it forces that item into your view unless you've turned off friendfeed's "friend-of-a-friend" feature. - Robert Scoble
Robert: The only natively "on" feature I turned off in FF is the Spam my twitter feature. But in my home feed, I only see the things you post, and the things your friends post, but I never get a message saying "Robert Liked this and that is why it's now on your home feed" - Matthew DeVries
If I "favorite" a tweet, it could be considered a like. It just needs to be more discoverable on Twitter. It should then automatically come to ff as a like. - Andrew Smith
Matthew, that's how Friend of a Friend works on FF. Anytime you see a post from "User (friend of Robert Scoble)" then you're seeing that post because Robert either liked or commented on that item. Otherwise, you wouldn't see User's post because you're not subscribed to them. - FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
Stupid Blogger --> That's a revelation to me. I had no idea. - Dave Winer
Tina is correct. You can see the things I've liked at http://www.friendfeed.com/scoblei... and you'll see those things pretty closely align with the items you'll see in your "best of" feature. - Robert Scoble
There should be a Facebook for Dummies ;-) - Marcel Körner
Tina: I didn't know that, I thought I was getting everything your friends of friends were posting, I didn't know that you "liking" it was the gate keeper for dumping it into my feed. Ok, now I guess I have to figure out how to get more FF followers too *sigh* - Matthew DeVries
Tina - but if I'm subed to you and you like something Dave posted - and I'm not subed to Dave... I see it cause you liked it... no? - Brian Roy
IMHO 150 words is a way to bring down the ranting and overloading of information, a varity of both worlds would be the best - jimmy howe from twhirl
Thing is, I don't consider myself to be that great of a content creator. I'm a pretty good RT/Like relay (my RT of Jkrums's picture was the first I think), but no one follows you cause you're good at knowing who is creating the good stuff, you have to create the good stuff yourself. - Matthew DeVries
Isn't the "favorite" on Twitter the same as FF "like"? I'm on the fence with re-tweets. - andy brudtkuhl
Favorite are like bookmarks. They don't notify your followers however. - Valley
@Valley ahh I see... But if they notified your followers, wouldn't that just be the same as a retweet? - andy brudtkuhl
good idea - Mike
Agreed. There needs to be some kind of first class construct for this in Twitter if only for the reason that adding the proper RT attribution inline often puts me over the 140 char limit. - Buddy Brewer from twhirl
Agree with Andrew here, fave on Twitter = like on FriendFeed just not as well done on Twitter. - Kol Tregaskes
Very much sens into it. - Dani Radu
So twitter are just going to push their favourite option and make it more useful? - Nicholas James
If Twitter makes favorites bump tweets to the top then those would be like "like"s. - Morton Fox
Agreed - RE: retweeting going away. :) I actually use faves on Twitter like I do stars in google reader - to remind me to see them again (usually because my first look is on my phone). Haven't "liked" much on FF but when I have, it's been to do just that - mark it as something I like or agree with. - Bill from twhirl

The more I use Friendeed and Twitter, the more I use Friendfeed and NOT Twitter. Twitter should be worried. I think Friendfeed will overtake Twitter.
This is a conclusion some of us reach some of the time. I see Twitter as a good complement to FriendFeed. It's obvious that I spend a lot of time here, but Twitter has its utility. - Louis Gray
I've noticed a big difference since using friendfeed. I'm really starting to like friendfeed now. It's a really interesting opportunity because it's encouraging me to click on links and follow through, and discussions are so much easier to follow. Twitter feels outdated now. Oh jeez. - Mona Nomura
The geese aspect of the story is not confirmed yet. - bill giltner
Oh give me a freaking break. I love animals, but some people go way too far. And I know Canada (that's what they are, they aren't Canadian) Geese are protected, but they are becoming a big pain in the ass. - Mol, Santa Claws

Do you honestly believe that Scoble's affiliate links are the first time a tech writer has sold you something without disclosing its commercial nature?
art_of_laughter2.jpg
*guffaw* - AJ Kohn
I Think its great he was "caught" in his own words... :o) - Rob Sellen :o)
I still don't see the fuss over it - Tyler (Chacha)
In all these hypothetical cases, it was bad. - Meryn Stol
I don't see the fuss, either. Every link to Amazon products on my blog is my affiliate link and I don't disclose that fact. - Joey Gibson
what about if I did it? or someone else, like you chacha? Would there be this fuss? - Rob Sellen :o)
Likewise, I do the same as Joey. It's not like it's making things any more expensive for the buyer. - Chris, Taskerrific Guy
On top of that, it's not like Scoble's a shill or anything. This is like one of those moral panics about nothing at all. - Chris, Taskerrific Guy
Nope. Which is certainly not an allegation I would have made. And Chris, how would you characterize my summary of it as a "moral panic"? - Louis Gray
Don't see the scandal. I'm always suspect of any testimonials. He's just a techy Billy Mays. - Ernie Oporto from Nambu
@Ernie: LOL! I can close my eyes and almost see that, myself. - Chris, Taskerrific Guy
Now with power of Seagate oranges! Shamwow! - Ernie Oporto from Nambu
Don't see the problem. - Yuvi
Come on, Gray, you're freaking out! Seriously though, my concern would be Scoble is cashing out his social capital for some affiliate revenue. Still selling himself short in the long term. Not only that, but Gray is talking about the concept in general (yes?), and what happens when others follow suit? - coldbrew
In fact, in this lean economy I EXPECT to see it more as people try to capture alternative revenues. Just be wise enough to look for it. - Ernie Oporto from Nambu
coldbrew... so what? if its not spam it is ok really is it not? I mean you still pay the same amount whether an aff link or not.... so who cares? you could be helping someone EAT... or NOT. - Rob Sellen :o)
Coldbrew, I'm freaking out? Doubt it. Pretty calm over here. Just reporting something that's newsworthy, in that Robert can finally try to make some return on his efforts outside the blog. - Louis Gray
what you mean finally? he has made money INdirectly from his efforts... ;o) - Rob Sellen :o)
Sellen, anyone trying to dispute the merits/drawbacks of affiliate links? Why is this straw man being presented? There is more context to this discussion, namely, leveraging your social connections to drive affiliate sales, and the slippery slope it may present. - coldbrew
Rob you mean.. ;o) I never said any one did dispute it? what slippery slope do you refer to? - Rob Sellen :o)
@Louis: I'm not saying it's a moral panic. I'm saying that the issue is a lot of fuss over nothing truly significant, which is something moral panics have in common with the issue here. - Chris, Taskerrific Guy
Apparently, I fail at sarcasm (though I thought starting the next sentence with, "Seriously though" would be an indicator..). Slippery slope of being a reliable source for product suggestions>>>profiting from them>>suggesting products one is not 100% on b/c of financial interest - coldbrew
