totally agree. i can t understand why a Neo-Nazi group is more legal than a Breast-Feeding picture group. this is totally ridiculous and just proves the law is fucked up. Facebook should know it
- Ouriel Ohayon
Also, the Facebook employees can't have it both ways. They already censor lots of people and things. To claim that they can't in this case is lame and inconsistent. They take down mothers who are showing themselves breast feeding, for gosh's sake. And now the employees are saying that they need to keep up this hate speech? Really lame, and I really like some of the employees who are...
- Robert Scoble
Ouriel: exactly. Plus, freedom of speech and the first amendment are meant for governments, not companies. Companies don't have to follow the first amendment at all. And there are plenty of places you can put your hate speech, there's no reason that Facebook needs to support that.
- Robert Scoble
Now, if Facebook had ALWAYS supported freedom of speech and the first amendment principles THEN I would agree with the employees. But they don't. The company is really screwed on this issue.
- Robert Scoble
just wrote a comment on TC: "I am sorry but i don't get this, with all the american jews organization in the world, why has no one sued Facebook already? I don t agree that advertisers should show Facebook the way. The law should. Mike keep up !"
- Ouriel Ohayon
Facebook seems to have a seriously skewed idea of free speech, and of what is and isn't acceptable. One of my friends is using a restricted version of the site because FB say she is 'offensive', yet all she has done is tell a few bawdy jokes. Apparently, if she was calling for whole groups of people to be killed, that would be ok.
- Kate
So, what's the answer? Yes to boobs or no to Nazis.
- Johnny Worthington
People mix Freedom of Speech with Anarchy of ideas. Freedom does not mean you can say whatever you want. The limit of freedom is when the right to exist to a group of persons is denied.
- Ouriel Ohayon
Are you saying that if you want to engage in hate speech you just need to form a company and then you are exempt.
- Marian Pike
Johnny: if you're going to argue freedom of speech I just want consistency. If you're going to remove boobs then you gotta remove hate too and be proud of that. On the other hand, if you're going to argue a vigorous defense of freedom of speech (I've done that many times in my career) then you gotta go all the way. Hint: spam is speech. Facebook removes that. Facebook is inconsistent and wrong because of its inconsistency.
- Robert Scoble
Marian: no, I never even thought through that. I just am pointing out that Facebook is inconsistent and therefore it is NOT a vigorous defender of freedom of speech and is wrong in this case to be proud that it's letting the hate speech stay up. Lots of people totally misunderstand the first amendment and freedom of speech, including the three Facebook employees I see posting there.
- Robert Scoble
Marian: I find it sad that Facebook pulls down all sorts of content all the time (they removed all my content for 24 hours and these three employees never said a word) yet they let this crap stay up. Inconsistency. That's why Facebook is wrong.
- Robert Scoble
Robert, completely agree. I just thought I would just pose the question to the group because in some discussions around this issue that I have seen, some people tend to be good at expressing outrage without then expressing the solution.
- Johnny Worthington
It is easy to censor images. Words are a whole different issue. Facebook have put themselves in a difficult position.
- thinkQuick
Johnny: if it were my company I'd decide up front which road I'm going to go down. Either be a strict first amendment type and resist all attempts to pull down ANY content from the site, or say "we have community standards here and we'll pull down content for any reason, at any time, especially if that content pisses off some of our users." If they took either stance I'd be OK.
- Robert Scoble
Freedom of speech has its own limitations. If someone will argue that calling: "Death to the red-head children of Virginia" is allowed by the name of the first amendment, then he/she has problems understanding Democracy boundaries.
- Nir Ben Yona
Nir: even in USA freedom of speech has some limitations. You can't yell "fire" in a crowded theater, for instance.
- Robert Scoble
Robert, wow, I didn't know the issue is that restricted...
- Nir Ben Yona
Nir: yup, there are lots of places where you can't say anything you want. Journalism students learn about those in media law. Also, go ahead and threaten death to the President and see what happens.
- Robert Scoble
If someone write a comment at your blog that violates your readers and you know that as a result of that something wrong can happen, would you take it off? sure you would. It's practically the same. Freedom of speech is one thing, but if no one is there to take responsibility and control over some of the content, it can lead to a non reversible disaster. I'm actually concern about the situation, and I'm backing Mike on his posts 101%.
- Orli Yakuel
In terms of FaceBook, surely, because of it's global reach, there should be some attempt to take into account thwe different laws surrounding freedom of speech and hate-speech around the world, and come to a balanced view? I know these groupd are blocked in Germany & Austria, where such talk is a criminal offence; shouldn't the existence of such laws, and International Law concerning genocide, be taken into account in framing policy regarding this?
- Nigel
Orli: actually, in the past, I've taken a strong defense of freedom of speech. Lately, though, I've switched my stance and will take off a variety of speech. Just be consistent about it. Freedom of speech only applies to governments, anyway.
- Robert Scoble
Nigel: again, it's consistency that matters. It's perfectly fine to say "we'll keep all content up unless it breaks a law around the world somewhere." Just be consistent, though. Don't take down some content and then say you're defending some principle by keeping other content up.
- Robert Scoble
I absolutely agree with Mike on this one...what do other sites like Blogger or Digg do with this type of content?
- Anthony Feint
Whether Facebooks censors something or not is up to them, they are a private company. I just wish they were consistent if you are going to use the Freedom of Speech mantra, then you need to apply it across the board and not pick and choose.
- Kim Landwehr
I'm appalled to see people like Kyle responding to Arrington's post and saying: "I really don’t understand what’s wrong with hate speech. Of course hate crime is horrible (though really, is it any worse than ‘normal’ crime?), but I fail to see how speech can hurt people. I’m not even going to get into the difficulty of defining what speech ‘hateful’ and what isn’t." This guy doesn't...

By supporting those hate groups, Facebook literally empowers them, and once they'll meet outside of Facebook, it can (and will) lead to irreversible disaster.
- Orli Yakuel
I need to seriously consider whether I can continue to use Facebook after seeing the responses to that article.
- Donald Forth
Freedom of speech is like freedom of religion. Freedom of religion necessarily implies and includes freedom FROM religion as well. Freedom of speech means freedom from speech, it means I don't have to listen. While it is admirable that Facebook does not want to deny anyone anyone's right to free speech, it is well within Facebook's right to say, "Yes. You have a right to say whatever you like, just not on MY website. You are more than free to create your own hate based social network."
- Marvin Price
If sites like Facebook and Twitter want to become "utilities" like electricity or the phone company, they need to figure out a way to remove themselves from the transaction. They're platforms. They're infrastructure. They should provide a system for users to exchange messages and content and for users to filter content as they see fit. They need to get out of the business of "owning" content and controlling what content can and can't be exchanged on their platform.
- Ken Sheppardson

Has no one seen that fb has closed down a Muslim hate group today? Check it out www.theage.com.au in the technology section. "We disabled the 'I Hate Muslims in Oz' group because it contained an expilcit statement of hate." Why is this double standard allowed?
- Travis Koger
Just to be clear I am not unhappy that they have closed the group, but why not close the neo-Nazi one also and at the same time proclaim that they are protecting free speech!
- Travis Koger
Not the first time they have done this - the first time was on Ezra Callahan's note: http://www.facebook.com/reqs... - it's a shame most of the comments are now gone (due to notes' 100 comments at a time limit) - there were some classic and overwhelming displays of stupidity.
- JIDF
Thanks for keeping this live Scoble. I hesitated for various reasons for a long time to say anything about this hoping that facebook would change their mind. But the seriousness of the matter made me change my mind.
- net
The "double standard" is the result of the fact Facebook doesn't exist in a cultural, ethnic, religious or legal vacuum. Its standards reflect those of the employees, and those standards are always going to be in conflict with one group or another trying to use the platform. I can't really think of any belief system that doesn't have some inherent internal inconsistencies, so those...

I'm not too fond of the argument that hate speech is free speech. Free speech is supposed to do no harm. Hate speech is intended to incite harm. This is why it's illegal to shout "Fire!" in a crowded theater when there is no fire.
- Scott Raymond
How much is the value of freedom for you? And who decides for you, what can be published and what cannot be published in the internet? For me as a Facebook user, of course, Facebook has the right to decide - I will and I have to accept their decisions and I will continue to use the service OR NOT! Reading Robert Scoble's posts on the worthlessness of CNN et al, I am reminded of something that a friend of mine who survived Katrina once said: "No one cares about the flood waters until they're come up on your doorstep."
That's not a dig against Robert or Maryam, btw. I know their frustration, because I'm a news junkie, and I know that, if I want accurate, timely information about events that are happening all over the world, the very LAST place I'm going to check is the TV news networks here in the US. If it wasn't for the various news sources on the internet, I'd probably believe that whatever was happening in the lives of some worthless celebrity or on some piss-ant reality show was the most important thing that had happened all week. CNN and its brethren has sucked for at least the last 20 years. Thanks to the net, people are starting to realize that fact.
- Steven Perez
The whole mass media in the US is pretty much a farce, because it is a handful of large corporations that control all news outlets. And since they are large corporations, they are more interested in the bottom line than in independent news gathering. Thank goodness for bloggers, twitterers and social networks ... and Auntie Beeb!
- Rene Wirtz
TV doesn't allow us to empathize with those who suffer - but online, their voice is raw and unedited.
- Ahsan Ali aka. Slick
Yep, and don't forget NPR and the BBC...we do have alternative "mass media" sources out there.
- Alex Scoble
I always laugh whenever my friends mock the BBC. The mockery usually stops when I ask them if they've heard about this thing happening over here in the US or that thing happening just over the border in Mexico, all of which I heard from the Beeb. And then I openly mock them whenever they start telling me what they heard from the TODAY show.
- Steven Perez
from IM
Auntie Beeb is one of the most reliable news sources in the world, if not the most reliable!
- Rene Wirtz
And it's worth noting that NPR gets a great deal of its international news items from ... wait for it ... the BBC.

Ok, y'all are going to laugh at me, but for a moment I thought you were referring to Susan Beebe ! LOL

And the duplicity of the media is amazing. Let some idiot Congresscritter start railing about how Iran needs to be bombed, and CNN and its ilk won't shut up about it. But riots in the streets after an election? NOT. A. PEEP.

Tick one off for the 'real-time' web!
- Travis Koger
Sadly...believe it or not, the Tuttles (motorcycle dudes) are ridiculously popular and I'm sure the ad revenue and viewership during that spot was huge and CNN didn't want to piss any of them off. Reality television superstars vs. real-time web.
- Dana Fosburgh
Dana: yeah, and that's an indictment of American culture right there that we can't pay attention to what's happening around the world because some stupid motorcycle dudes are too popular.
- Robert Scoble
You're absolutely right, Dana. Ad revenue is on top the list right now, as far as I know. The question then is, should the network change their name so as not to mislead the public?
- Moushumi Kabir
Some times we just report news but some times we(real time web) R the news ,CNN could use all the tools that we do,but they don't ,the news here is that old media if far far behind and as soon as they will get the point they will make the change ,the media world will not stay behind, they will learn and come back ,CNN is just one ,and all the others ? where are they ?
- Johni Fisher
"ad revenue and viewership" - the problem in a nutshell. The cable "news" organizations are nothing of the sort. FOX never was. CNN started becoming more like FOX because FOX beat them in the ratings. You haven't been able to find "news" on cable in years, because bluster and celebrity crap sells more ads.
- John Craft
You mentioned it, but it should be emphasized that NONE of the major cable news networks were focusing on this last night, NOT just CNN. MSNBC, Fox, Bloomberg, CNBC... none of them. The New York Times had some excellent coverage on its Web site, though, including nice posts its The Lede blog. And CNN, to its credit, did have some video online when we checked about 10p CDT.

As a business, I understand the need to multiply revenue and profit, more in public companies. But, with it comes responsibilities and priorities, more importantly, focus. - Johni Fisher
"long time ago it was like that" - yes, prior to 2001 CNN had bureaux around the world, a committed news man in Tom Johnson http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki... , and an owner who didn't demand profits (Ted Turner). Ted sold to Time Warner, TW merged with AOL, and Tom Johnson retired, it all changed.
- John Craft
I love being able to comment right from your blog! It's sounds like you had a very interesting night! It might have been a coincidence, but I believe everything happens for a reason. Look forward to your updates this week!
- Michael Fidler
joebrroks, what is the purpose of so many Twitter accounts? Are they official or personal accounts? What's ROI for these accounts? Those would be my questions as a shareholder/Board. Given the economy, how resources are being used (or wasted) ought to be top priorities.
- Moushumi Kabir
CNN will understand sooner or later that they must change ,I am sure that they are reading our news and as "news" its new for them :-)..... its not just being in place and on time ,it is much more from social media that they ignore
- Johni Fisher
Regardless, CNN was broken before twitter.
- Clint Laskowski
CNN only wants to use Twitter when it suits them -- but when they're getting out-reported by citizen journalists, they fold up the tent.
- Curt Mercadante
Curt, trust me many of these accounts are activated by individuals who happen to be employees of the network and have put their work status on their profile. I doubt these Twitteres are official mouthpiece of the network. In fact, I think the network should be concerned by the random usage and waste of company $$$.
- Moushumi Kabir
Moushumi: If CNN has lost "control" of it's employees' use of Twitter, it is only because these individuals realize the story that is being missed/fumbled by their employer. Perhaps we should consider them like whistleblowers -- unable to stand by and do nothing.
- Curt Mercadante
Curt, I disagree. How an employee behaves or misuses resources should be taken seriously by any employer. I doubt many of them are so called whistle blowers, they aren't blowing anything, most times complaining about their work. If they are paid to maintain social space, that's a different story, as is the case with Robert and many other bloggers, microbloggers, etc. But, just to use one's position with high profile companies to promote their own agenda is simply wrong. My two cents.
- Moushumi Kabir
I agree, the US news media has been broken and biased for a very long time. Maybe it's time for the movers and shakers of the social web to figure out a way to help citizen reporting by building in some rules for reporting to help validate/certify reporters/bloggers. I'm not implying that what's being reported is bad or anything like that, but there's enough people that I know that...

Simple abuse of power and total lack of professionalism. Good news though, the economic downturn will force (if they haven't already) companies to shake up org for the good.
- Moushumi Kabir
Interesting... I just started getting news alerts from CNN about Iran.
- Amy D
@Amy, the "movers and shakers of the social web" include some that do this very same thing. I think it's up to consumers to police, not "leaders" -- consumers hand over their control in this country all the time, and it's too bad. We have the power to change the world, particularly in our country, yet we choose to leave it up to someone else instead. It's not a surprise, then, to see what we see happen.
- Patricia
@Patricia, That's why I mentioned the movers and shakers instead of the consumers. :) They will never take the lead on it and will consume whatever is popular. The fact that Twitter is popular makes it stand out for them.
- Amy D
Moushumi: I find it troubling that you are more concerned about CNN employees using Twitter on "company time" to cover one of the most important news stories in the world (while their employer remains silent). That's like scolding your employee for not having his "TPS Reports" turned in on time while the office burns down around you. CNN failed here.
- Curt Mercadante
@amy, but if the movers and shakers contribute to the problem, what will anyone gain? Organize a mass movement of consumers to take control of the media and you'll see change. Otherwise, we won't.
- Patricia
@Patricia - Also, I guess you can say the movers and shakers in this media form would be the people that care about and post news rather than the leaders. Maybe they should be called anti-leaders?
- Amy D
@Amy, most consumers do not know the way it works. they are not aware. that has nothing to do with who they are but what they know. i can spot instantly when something is "placed" in the media, when media has been controlled, etc. i've worked behind the scenes in media since i was 22 years old. Most consumers have no idea. To me, awareness is the only way to drive change.
- Patricia
@Patricia Even with your knowledge, are you still a consumer as well? Most people don't know how Internet routing works but it still stays up (for the most part) and it's a very legitimate media source.
- Amy D
@Amy, not sure I get the comparison of how a technical platform that operates on its own has any correlation to how internet media is more legitimate. Regardless, it's too bad that there won't be a larger movement to push better reporting in ALL media (including blogs, etc.) stemming from the CNN example versus solely focusing on CNN because it could be a chance to usher in real change.
- Patricia
Curt: you misunderstood me. Any company should be concerned about waste. If they aren't, they wouldn't be in business. Otherwise there will be all kinds of drama! :-) and just in case...Mr. Gates, longtime customer, first time commenter. Just keep on doing what you feel you should be doing. It's worked for you thus far. You is, be da man. So if no broke, no fixin.... nuff sed

Paul, I'll give you one: Microsoft is all about innovation. When it comes to innovative software companies, nobody's bought more of them than Microsoft.

moive: Dead Man on Campus - "Bill Gates wants my brain" --- i just had too, one movie quote i always think about when i hear his name!
- shayne catrett
Bill wants his annual letter ritual to eventually rise to Warren Buffett level, so guess it's not surprising he's blowing kisses your way Robert. Or he just plain misses you.
- mark ivey
Full on lurker or might he have an alias account?
- AJ Kohn
Wouldn't Bill Gates employ someone to manage his social networking accounts? Or is the risk of mis-communication too great?
- Bill Romanos
If Bill went on Twitter I am sure he would get a gazillion followers... Though Jobs would probably get a gazillion+1
- Peter Efland
BIG microsoft fan...Until I gotta macintosh that is.
- Zee.
i'm sure someone e-mails him a daily ego-blast of all such things said throughout the Web.
- Andy Sternberg
He has people read it for him, of course.
- Monica Bower
Why do people assume he has people looking at Friendfeed and Twitter for him? Bill might like to read Twitter and FriendFeed feeds.

One would think Apple would take all iPhone related customer service from AT&T
- Brad Arsenault
My co-worker says AppleCare covers accidental damage, as long as it isn't water damage. I dunno.
- MiniMage TKDteacher of FF
From Apple "iPhone excludes coverage for damage resulting from accident, disassembly, unauthorized service and unauthorized modifications. Please review the warranty for further details." Dropping and breaking is a user fail and warranty fail too. http://www.apple.com/support...
- iSteeve
And now I know. So glad I bought a protective case for my 2G. I know iPhones don't bounce, but mine does in it's DLO! No, really, it's fallen at least two or three times, and it's been fine every time. Given that these puppies shatter if you look at them too hard, I'm quite pleased. I'd be really screwed if I killed mine; I don't know where I'd get another used, contractless one.
- MiniMage TKDteacher of FF
The team members, accustomed to working on Macintoshes, found computers outfitted with six-year-old versions of Microsoft software. Laptops were scarce, assigned to only a few people in the West Wing. The team was left struggling to put closed captions on online videos. Senior advisers chafed at the new arrangements, which severely limit mobility -- partly by tradition but also for security reasons and to ensure that all official work is preserved under the Presidential Records Act.
- Leo Laporte
wow. it will be interesting to see what happens. with the new web site, blog, and YouTube channel change is definitely happening.
- Randy Ksar
from twhirl
I am sure that much of this will change in the new administration. You can use modern tools in government work and still maintain public records. You can even work on a Mac and maintain public records. I have to say that I am not surprised at the state of technology in the White House that the new administration inherited though...
- Rob McNair-Huff
Do you think we will see a Mac on the desk in the oval office?
- Michael McGimpsey
from twhirl
Oh dear..that is a step backwards! Grrrr! Obama needs "CHANGE" in the IT Dept!!
- Susan Beebe
I would love to see a Mac on the desk in the oval office. Even a Windows notebook or tablet would be a big change...
- Rob McNair-Huff
but frankly - if what you need to do is manage information, search the web, and write documents, a six year old version of Microsoft software is fine - say windows XP, project 2000, office, email - all of those are 6+ years old and do the job (tablet technology is 6+ years old.and hasnt improved). Also laptops go missing, which probably is a huge concern at this level. New CPUs are wasted on office work
- Joelle Nebbe (iphigenie)
Joelle, completely agree, with the exception of Linux, especially Ubuntu. Mac and Windows, definitely. Ubuntu continues to surpass my expectations every new release.
- Ⓐ ☠ slayerboy ☠ Ⓐ
What did office productivity tools add in the last 6 years? (excluding wide sharing tools which are forbidden for use in the white house anyway).
- Amit Morson
Given how well the rest of the transition went, it surprises me that they were caught off guard by what types of computers and software was being used in the White House offices. Sounds like someone dropped the ball there.
- Ken McNamee
I dont think anyone was surprised, this is just media trying to create a story where there is none, in the scramble to invent more ways by which the old administration can be made to look incompetent. I know many companies who still use an older version of MS Office and XP and everyone is GLAD that they do (except for people whose status is tied to having the coolest gear) - and the lack of laptops is probably deliberate. The UK gov is a good example of how much damage is done by casual use of laptops.
- Joelle Nebbe (iphigenie)
Joelle, I don't think the story made it sound like the outgoing administration was incompetent in this regard. According to the story, the technological backwardness is partly because of the need for security and partly just the White House culture no matter who the administration is. However, it does sound like the new administration walked into the White House the day after the inauguration and was surprised by what they found. There shouldn't have been any surprises.
- Ken McNamee
surprised by 6 years old software, hu? Would be funny to watch them enter a space shuttle and meet technology from the beginning of the 1990's.
- Amit Morson
Testing!: *clears throat*, uhhum... FriendFeed, Robert Scoble, Twitter, Social Media, Boobies, Bacon, Steve Jobs, MacWorld, iPhone, Obama, Sarah Palin, Gaza, Personal Branding, Hide, Block, CES, Top 10 Ways to [insert accomplishment]. This is a test of the FriendFeed-I-wanna-lota-comments system. Please choose your personal favorite hot topic and...
Please choose your favorite hot topic and Discuss! UPDATE: Addendum: LOLCats, Star Wars, LEGO and Robots.... oh... and Ponies. And sheep (for Akiva - don't stop believin')... and BBQ!
- Fa La La La Lindsay
If you had said Rob Sellen I would have commented...
- MVB (Grinch of FF)
Let's talk about the top 10 ways to insert bacon into Steve Jobs. :P
- Laura Lou Who
Only if you can fit boobies into that discussion somewhere. In the same sentence with Robert Scoble, bacon, Steve Jobs, and iPhone. I dare someone to come up with something. In fact, I triple dog dare you!
-
Robert Scoble uses Friendfeed to stream his info from various social media sites like Twitter. Using his iPhone, he can blog about MacWorld, Obama, Palin, Gaza, Personal Branding and 10 ways to get the most comments. Folks on Friendfeed can then Hide or Block depending on the alignment of the stars. For example, posts about bacon and boobies and Steve Jobs may offend some people.
- Yolanda
Cool / Cool / Blah / intresting / Horay for... / NOM / Duuude / Never went :( / Got one and love it / Big job ahead of him / *PEW PEW PEW* / Mess / I'll make tshirts / Seek / LEGO / Want to go / Lube...
- Johnny Worthington
If Obama teamed up with Steve Jobs and sent Sarah Palin to Gaza with her boobies out in only the bacon bra to do a "Top 10 Ways to Get More Comments in Social Media", she could use an iPhone to Twitter and FriendFeed the event and have more followers then Scoble, MacWorld news, and CES news combined, and she wouldn't even have to do new Personal Branding or talk about LEGOs, LOLcats, or Mangos, though lots of us might Hide or Block everyone participating in the memes that would ensue.
- xero
My wife is kinda strange sometimes...
- Chrimmus Tad

STAR WARS AND LEGO ARE NOT ON THE LIST FIRED!
- Mona Nomura
boobies *giggles like an 8-yr. old*
-
OMG! I could only fit so much in the list. I am going to update my first comment to avoid Mona, Richard and Steven's Wrath. And Mo's.
- Fa La La La Lindsay
My bad, Linzay. Still, though, fail on the absence of BBQ
- MVB (Grinch of FF)
There, Mark, updated just for you. :) @teleken, no, I haven't been to Joe's. Tad likes Honey Bear's but we haven't had that since we lived downtown (5 years ago).
- Fa La La La Lindsay
xero, Sarah Palin in a bacon bra sounds delicious. Better than Joe Biden wearing an athletic supporter made of Seagate disk drives.
- Ontario Emperor
from fftogo
By the way, I'll be doing some Joe Biden stuff in a week or so, maybe. One of my lesser-read blogs has a feature called "Empoprise-NTN High Noon" that features an NTN/Buzztime trivia location. I've featured places in DC and Chicago lately, & Springfield is coming up. I think Wilmington is next.

Gilmore Girls is fantastic, the writing, lightning dialog, and copious amounts of witty allusion-filled Gilmorisms was the main reason to watch the show. Well, that and everyone was incredibly hot. *discloses that he owns every season*

But that's not my hot topic. What is Glen going to do with multiple ponies? One pony I can understand, but two? Well, maybe he can put one foot on one pony and the other foot on a second and try to balance, but the ponies would have to be awfully small.

- Roberto Bonini
That's why I like so much Derrick's entries: they never deal with this kind of topics. Seriously, Friendfeed needs to attract audiencie outside of the "geek" sector. :)
- Jordi Soler
The Canon. I'd have so much more fun with a zippy camera than a Big Mac.
- Mike Neumann
Probably the computer. I'm happy with the first gen 5D I'm about to buy and as awesome as the camera is, the MBP doesn't need another $5K in lenses.
- Derrick
Neither, you need at least twice that for glass & equipment to get the "rig" you should want for a Canon MKII - sorry, 3K isn't enough for that toy; and spending 3K on disposable technology (Mac equipment) isn't a wise investment.
- Enrique Gutierrez
Neither, I'd use it to buy food for a year.
- Will Higgins™
Considering I can make quicker cash with my Photography work I would say the Canon 5D MKII and then I would buy the Apple 17 inch MacBook Pro with some of my earnings!
- Patrick Greer
5D Mark II. And then throw the remaining towards some new glass.
- Andy Hannon
2k into the bank, 1k for computer upgrades and other stuff.
- Grant Bierman
5D Mk II everytime ... unless I don't have a Mac at that particular time ...
- Stephen Taylor
I've already got the 15" unibody so I'd go for the 5Dmkii
- Sparky
If I didn't have a laptop, then I would get the 17" MBP. If I already had a lappy, then get the camera...
- William Sellers
Well, I recently moved from a 30D to a 5DMII because it was a huge upgrade for my "system". With a 2 year old Macbook Pro still serving me well for my needs, it's an easy decision. Additionally, I can't see using a 17" notebook over a 15 for portability sake, I'd just as well get an iMac and keep using my Macbook Pro for mobile use.
- Ryan
Aren't you in Vegas? I think there are a few other options in front of you..
- LA Snark
MacBookPro 17-inch. I am a Nikon guy. So, Canon 5D MKII if I had $7K for all the lenses, too.
- Chintan Zaveri
The camera! I already have the 15" MBpro. 17" is just too big.
- Sherry Main
My 1 yr-old MacBook doesn't thrill me; it sits on the desk unused, and I just couldn't pay more than $200 for a camera, unless I was dreadfully rich.
- MiniMage TKDteacher of FF
5DMKII - sell some images on istockphoto, and then buy an MSI Wind and install OSX. It is faster than my 15" MBP!
- Darren Mak
Neither. Maybe 3 coins :). I have a Macbook Pro which I don't use often comparing to my PC. I am not into the consumer electronic stuff, only got a digital cam last year :).
- dexin
Canon. Can't believe Apple ditched the matte screen on the 17" - FCP users and photographers don't want a glossy screen - the idea of the 17" is the ability to use it out in the field for photo/video editing.
- Peter Clayton
So limiting, Robert! If I could pick whatever I wanted, I'd get one of those sweet Asus multi-touch netbooks coming out - and then use the rest to buy Yahoo! stock. :P
- Shawn Farner
MB 13'' and the external cinema display. MBP17 is huge to carry out
- Jean-Charles VERDIE
Well part of it would have to go towards fixing my car, http://preview.tinyurl.com/9dz2kz. Then the rest would go towards buying a second camera body to be my main and at least one lens if not two. Then the rest would go towards bills.
- Mathew™ one of a kind
Robert: Apple products plus awesome SLR cameras...response is a given :)
- Mo Kargas
the camera is nice - especially all the HD video. friend of mine in the movie post-production business reckons this sort of Camera will KILL the movie camera business in a few years time. especially at the low-budget movie (<$30 million) of the movie business. RED already making big inroads. much cheaper than an ARRI.
- Scot Mcphee
The MK II as I already have the MBP 17 inch...older but it works.
- Semipro
Canon 5D is the winner for me. Great digital photography is the gift that keeps on giving.... ;-)
- John Uppendahl
Well.... Given that I have 4 PC desktops, 2 PC laptops, and 1 iMac, all of which are operational and regularly used, AND that I suck at photography, I'm going for what's behind door #3: A whopping big HDTV -- which will get hooked up to the living room PC, of course. ;-)
- Joanmarie
I'd go the MacBook - but I'd also load it up with the full 8gb of RAM I see as an option (and not many people mentioning). Sadly, a nice 17" MBP setup it just over NZ$10k :(
- Mark Derricutt
MacBook Pro. Hands down. I'm a computer engineer, not a photographer.
- Logan Leger
well since I've already got a Canon 5D Mark II... hmmmm...
- Thomas Hawk
I'll buy neither. What I would rather do is try to buy one share of BRK-B if it gets to that price. :)
- imabonehead
The 17" Mac Book Pro, I already have a 5D MkII ;-)
- Jeff P. Henderson
I'd buy the camera, I have always loved photography and wanted to learn.
- R. Ferguson
I would take the cash and build an ultimate gaming PC !!! :D
- ralphsaunders
When you buy an inexpensive camera, you really sacrifice quality, and that lack of quality endures (you want to keep your photos forever, right?). When you buy an inexpensive computer, that's not the case (I don't need a unibody case :)
- David Andrzejewski
Ouch, this one hurts. I suppose I can't opt for a Nikon equivalent to the Canon? If this is the choice, I'd opt for the MacBook Pro. But if I had 3K, I'd buy myself the Nikon D300
- Karoli
The Canon. A 17" laptop is too big unless you plan to use it as a desktop.
- Hartley Spurlock
Mac for sure.I have a first generation Macbook and I need a new one. Kaya Singer
- Kaya
I would save it until I had between $8-15K for a CO2 laser cutting machine. I like my macs small, and while full frame sounds nice, I know I'm not nearly hungry enough to go pro in photography, so 40D suits me just fine.
- Jason Wehmhoener
That's a tough one because I have been wanting to get my first Mac (have to start somewhere, right?!) but am a hard core Canon fan/user. So if push came to shove, I would have to go with the Canon.
- Laura Zickus
That would be either a trip to another continent or a Fujitsu LifeBook P1630, but it would not be either of the options in the question. I seriously cannot understand $3k for a camera, unless you're going to make that money back in a month or two WITH said camera.
- MiniMage TKDteacher of FF
Neither, I would invest in the stock market.
- DGentry
I'd prefer a D300, however no matter what brand I'd take the camera in a second over the MBP. Save up another $500 and get a Windows Notebook as well.
- Kenton
The Canon 5D MKII for sure. Cameras bring me a lot more joy than flashy computers. Though a 17-inch MacBookPro would be nice to edit those new photos on too ;-)
- Ian Holton
from twhirl
Probably the Mac. I would never carry around a DSLR. Too big.
- Rodfather
Neither. The new full frame format with HD Movies (wow! Woopee *rolls eyes*) is crap - only 3.9 FPS?! Who are they kidding?!
- Adam
Seeing my Macbook Pro is 5 months old. I would buy neither...but I would buy a MacPro with more RAM.
- Ryan
I take a cruise with Lindsay - big ass stateroom.
- Chrimmus Tad
Neither, I'd get a Canon Rebel XTi and build a new gaming PC, anything left over would go toward the new home NOC
- xero
If I had the $3,000, Canon 5D and a larger donation here http://tinyurl.com/daniela Pros: it's more portable, takes better pictures, and connects to my more compact 15" Macbook Pro. Of course, it doesn't work with my Nikon lenses, so...
- Lee Dale
Canon 5D MKII only cause I have a Macbook Pro. If I didnt it would be the Macbook.
- Bob Maltais
Nah. Patrick's college fund. 5D Mark 2 or the Macbook isn't all that exciting.
- Joshua Hayworth
cannon.I kill computers, so not worth spending 3 grand on one. Plus I have a (beat up) macbook pro already.
- InPerpetualMotion(Gina k)
Photos shoot at 3.9 fps, video shoots at 30 fps. @AdamGiovane
- Jim Bergman
the new MBP, without a doubt ... my current ones needs a refresh (I'm accepting donations btw) ;-)
- Jeffrey Canton
Since I'll be getting the new MBP anyway, I'll take the 5D. BTW, is anyone keeping score?
- Brad Kligerman
I would buy the Canon, but of course, I would need a MacBook Pro in order to edit/view the photos the way they were meant to be viewed.
- Robert Peña
Blatant self-promotion, but if Robert used re-searchr.com it would keep score for us... I wrote it to suck down inline multiple choice selections so no ne would even have to leave ff
- James Ostheimer
Robert, you're asking the question that's been pondering in my mind from some time (albeit it used to be with the 15" and Cinema display v. 5D/a900/D700 -cannot make my mind-). I want to be able to make a decision before March. I think I'll be going for the Mac, since I might relocate in part of the world where carrying an expensive piece of art around my neck might be more dangerous than here, in JPN.
- Paul Papadimitriou
I'd go for a MBP, mine needs an upgrade and I just bought a 50D not long ago which is just fine for me.
- Andrew Trinh
from Nambu
More lenses. My camera is fine, and this Thinkpad is a good 'un.
- Paula W
Seems like Apple design the 17-inch MacBookPro just can use in 3years.the battery can only use in 1000 times,1time per 1day,3years.But Canon 5D can take more beatuful pics for me,and can stand by me more than 3years.if i really have 3000dollers,i real do this.kick off 17-inch MacbookPro.
- jedorstar
from twhirl
Wow, I came late to this convo. Well, for what it's worth at this point, I'd probably get the lappytop, sell my old MBP and then use THAT money to buy a cheaper camera. :D
- Jon, the Chilled Beartato
Canon 5D MKII, no doubt. I have a 1.5 year old 15-inch MacBookPro which is still more than OK. Going from Canon 400D to a 5D MKII however would be a major upgrade.
- Rutger Blom
Macbook I think. I have a 40D but REALLY want the 5D. Which do you think you could get your hands on first?
- Andrew Smith
The $2800 MBP becomes a lot more compelling when converted to 2080€.
- Brad Kligerman
I'm a Nikon guy but the 5D MKII has me seriously considering a switch
- Bryan Thatcher
from twhirl
As I don't like Macs and into my photography the choice out of the two is simple. :-) But I've rather spend the money on say the Nikon D3 and if you gave me an extra grand or 2 then I'd go for the Nikon D3X. ;-)
- Kol Tregaskes
from twhirl
Without though, the Canon 5D MKII. First up, you don't want to trust another "first gen" Apple product. And with the unimpressive lineup yesterday, maybe the 15" laptops are coming out real soon now, with similar features, and all quirks ironed out
- Colin Charles
from twhirl
I would buy the Mac, get a cheaper camera with the money I have left, and edit and enhance my videos using my Mac.
- Shevonne
I'd go the Mac route. I'm looking to buy one anyway and I've already got a camera. Might not be as fancy as the Canon do-dad, but I'll manage.
- James Ferguson
Wow 202 comments! How did I miss this thread? :)
- AJ Batac
The MacBookPro, I have a Canon 30d but I do not have a MacBook
- Bob Gannon
I wouldn't want a 17'' monster of a MacBookPro and therefore would go for the Canon 5D MKII
- Donald Townsend
Neither. Both are overpriced. If no other options; I'd go camera.
- Wade Dorrell
5D, the 17-inch MacBook Pro is very big. Harder to find bags for it and its less portable.
- seanb
bank it, put in matress, done need either of those things, we need smarter devices that tell us the likelyhood of use-longevitiy in them, "i'm a camera you bought last year, you used me 9 times, i collect dust, owner- please resist replacing me unless you really really really need to, and the data suggests you don't.."
- Dan Rockwell
from twhirl
Not enough to buy what I want with the Canon, and I wouldn't be caught dead spending $3000 on a laptop. What a waste!
- Paul Puri
Neither. A $3000 laptop is not worth it just because of its branding.
- Spencer
ohh.. I can't choose. I want both of them... But if i choose, first canon, second mac... İ have canon 40 d and 15'' mac book pro. And i don't like mac's new screen. It's like mirror...
- devletsah
Spencer: as a recent PC to Mac switcher, it's more than brand. Much more.
- Ryan
I'd buy a netbook for the other three members of my family and put the remaining $2000 toward bills or savings. :)
- Steve Lowe
Agree with Aaron, love my 13" Macbook and really want the 5D MKII
- Kyle
Is this thing still going? I can't remember if I replied to this yet, but I say it depends on what will benefit you the most. Robert, you are a photo-maniac. I know that you have a few cameras laying around the house, but I don't know how many Macs you have. You have to remember that a 17" laptop sounds great on paper, but I know that you do a lot of traveling as well, so it might now suite your means. Then again, I would never keep $3,000 dollars in my pocket ;)
- Michael Forian
of course the mac - doesn´t matter what the second option is...
- Dieter Schwarz
I would buy the Canon 5D MKII but being a Nikonian I would end up buying the MacBook Pro and feel no remorse :)
- Carlos Lorenzo
MacBook Pro. I need a laptop really bad.
- Nick Humphries
The camera. 17-inch laptops are fricking ridiculous.
- Andru Edwards
Impressive amount of comments here, this has to be the highest ever now right?
- Joe Dawson
I'm sorry, can you repeat the question: did you say a "camera", a "computer" or a "shark with laser beams"?
- Micah Wittman
save the money for tougher times. as much as I'd like the Canon, it's going to be just an expensive toy for me. and my three year old Inspiron works just fine for the most things I do on it.
- Franci Penov

5Dm2 because I already have the new MBP 15" 2.8Ghz. Mostly b/c the cam is more revolutionary than the 17", even though the 17" battery life is enticing.
- Thomas Bøhm
Wow, 250 comments - OMG ...FF is really growing ...YEAH !!!
- Susan Beebe
Yeah, this week has produced several >100 comment threads in my feed.
- xero
Not the 5D, but some body+the best lenses, that actually lasts longer. Laptops are out of date in months and often die within 18, cameras and lenses last a lot longer
- Joelle Nebbe (iphigenie)
I would buy a Apple 17-inch MacBookPro, only cause I already have a SLR, so I dont need the Canon 5D MKII.
- Colide81 (James)
I would not spend it, id rather invest 3000 dollars with 10 shares of google
- Kyle Weller
then just buy lenses - you probably already have a computer that can do everything you need
- Joelle Nebbe (iphigenie)
Exxon-Mobile. Oh wait, what was the question again?
- Erik S
Neither- new hardware for the pending Win7 beta drop. :)
- Randy Holloway
from twhirl
@Ryan I am a Mac user, have been for a while. It's just my opinion, but $2800 for a piece of hardware in which you can the same or better specs on a PC, is quite a bit of branding.
- Spencer
Using the MacBook Pro 17 inch now (love it!)- and I am quite happy with my Canon Powershot G9, so I'll just take the cash and pay down some of my debt--thanks!

Canon 5D MKII then buy the 15" MacBook Pro later.
- John Wang
I would buy a new fast lens for my old 5D (around $1000) and save the rest.

Nikon E90 *and* a 15" Macbook. :) I bend rules.
- Daniel Miessler
Canon 5d MKII, i'm not a mac person so that was easy.
- Squid
I've been back and forth on this since the 17" was announced. I am very likely to upgrade to the 5DMKII this year. But I want a more powerful laptop to work on the huge files it creates. Chicken? Egg? Confused.
- Jeremy Brooks
Canon 5D MKII for sure. MBP 15 is still chugging along after 2 years. And the 5D is still doing great after 1 year, but I would really like the new 5D.

asus aspire one; great battery, good enough cpu, the screen is quite good too, and you can get great deals (around $350 in Canada, so that would be less than $300 in the US)
- heri
i'd go for uk version of nc10 hsdpa in black as my own choice. 3g and 6 real hrs batt give best on-net possibilities of all. Weak pound means super price for those paying in euros. nc10 sans 3g a good choice for those not needing mobile internet.
- Steve 'Chippy' Paine
it might be kind of interesting if their next product had a separate touchscreen for the keyboard instead of a physical one - almost like the wheel but slightly more functional :P (and it would be easier to keep clean)
- bob
An idea for friendfeed.... It would be great to have a "tag" or "label" like in gmail feature under each post...next to the comment, then have our list of "tags" or "labels" in the column on the left. :o) even set a maximun amount of them. :o)
I think firefox is the real hero here. I get the exact same message and I'm not using openDNS on this computer.
- James Beake
Aren't you the guy that's always saying you don't need things like AV and phishing software because you "know what to do" on the Internet? Teehee.
- Jim Shireman
I got that site link as well. DM from legitimate account too. Sigh...had to change my password, which is a pain, because I had to then change it in OTHER locations.
- Helen Sventitsky
Actually, James is right. This is NOT an OpenDNS splash page. That's Firefox all the way.
- Eric Geller
Need to add that to my must watch movie list. :)
- Molly, "sorry"
Finally saw it, and really liked it up until Charlize Theron. Once that whole mess with her character started, I got real bored.
- Jon, the Chilled Beartato
I liked the premise, the development of the Hancock character, and some of the special effect. But, the other characters, like Jonathan's comment, and the plot were lousy.
- Pete Delucchi
I agree "Hancock" was 2/3 of a tremendous movie.
- Joe Pierce
Pretty lousy movie, just special effects. A super hero who drinks a lot and then saves people, but in the end makes a mess?
- Alvin
Only moral was how Hancock changed his personality to be kind and respectful
- Alvin
Hancock was great in the 1st half. A Super Hero that doesn't care about people was funny. It's not the norm so its a good change of pace. The 2nd half was a little meh. Still a good movie
- Andy Breeding
Ahh, what a good movie. I agree with Andy, the second half wasn't so awesome.
- Ivan
Smith and spaghetti? Didn't he feed his dog spaghetti sauce in "I am Legend"? Have to start watching for it in all his movies!
- James D Kirk
Good article, I'm looking forward to Win7, but I'm sort of puzzled by the removal of apps from the default build. Do you think it might be some sort of preemptive defense against legal issues?
- Aram Zucker-Scharff
meh. he thinks users will be horribly, horribly confused by taskbar mixing non-running app icons with running app icons. he says mixing the two is "a whopper of a mistake" and will, quote, "actively harm" most users. actively harm? like put someone's eye out? of course if you do the exact same thing (mix running & nonrunning app icons) and call it the "OS X Dock," it's no doubt an intuitive work of staggering GENIUS!!!
- Karim
also he thinks users will be confused by Libraries, despite the existence of "Smart Playlists" in iTunes, "Search Folders" in Outlook, etc. though he doesn't say that it will Actively Harm™ them in this case.
- Karim
After using the earlier build, the taskbar definitely takes some getting used to so I would agree that the new interface is a bit clunky. As long as they can increase security and performance I think they will be ok.
- Brandon Titus
i personally would consider "clunky" separate from "takes some getting used to," though the difference is clearly subjective. some of the time it just sounds like the reviewer is freaking out because something is *different* (not better or worse, just different) and then projecting their own unease onto the rest of the population. the review ends up describing the author's resistance to change instead of a describing the usability of a product.
- Karim
Karim for some reason I find your sarcasm especially sharp today!
- MVB (Grinch of FF)
lol thanks... though that probably means i should tone it down a bit ;-)
- Karim
'Tis sadly true... not many people can breathe at my level of sarcasm tolerance...
- MVB (Grinch of FF)
I had been using TED for several months, but I find that 30% of the time the torrents it suggests are to files that are scams to trick you into downloading and executing a malware. Fortunately I am using a Mac.
- Vinko
So you're saying that you don't have to worry about malware? Cool, don't run any, but you'd better make sure that the relatively larger percentage of macs that can be pwned doesn't become larger in absolute numbers than windows, or you may have a reversal of fortune.
- Mr. Gunn
…just for the comments. can we have more mac vs. win please?
- dK
OSX is unix based and therefore very tasty. However, OSX is designed for drawing pretty pictures and not serious work like downloading TV shows. </debate>
- Will Higgins™
And for the record the best way to download TV shows is utorrent's built in RSS grabber and a GOOD private torrent site.
- Will Higgins™
Can we first have lots of fawning adulation for vertical integration of closed systems? I love that stuff.
- Mr. Gunn
From BBC News: "Microsoft has given yet another reprieve to its seasoned Windows XP operating system. The cut off date for PC makers to obtain licenses for the software was 31 January 2009. But now Microsoft has put in place a scheme that will allow the hardware firms to get hold of XP licences until 30 May 2009. Previously Microsoft extended XP's life until 2010 - provided it was installed on netbooks and low-cost laptops. Windows XP was originally due to disappear off shop shelves on 30 January 2008. It was to be removed so as to make way for Windows Vista which went on sale to consumers early in 2007."

There is an very easy process : 1: Choose a song, right click on itunes, go to tab info, 2: select lapse time, like 00:00:00 to 00:00:30 ... Click ok and close. 3: Choose the song again, right click and choose create AAC version ... 4: Choose the new one, right click and delete. When alertbox asks, say dont delete files. 5: Go to folder, rename it m4v or m4r and double click! Ta daa

I might get around to visiting it after I update the firmware on my router. Right now, trying to go to IRC results in a router reset, and I really don't feel like putting all those MAC addresses, port redirections and static IP assignments in all over again.
- MiniMage TKDteacher of FF
Also, you can join the UStream FFundercats IRC chat at chat1.ustream.tv and #ffundercats.
- Rochelle
Is that one always open? I prefer the freenode IRC because I'm on there for other channels anyway.
- Rahsheen ™, Coach Rah
No idea. I just realized tonight that the FFundercats chat is actually an IRC channel in a webpage so I joined it separately, in my IRC client.
- Rochelle
Bah. Thought for a seconds this was FF via IRC. It's just IRC about/with FF people? Hm..
- Ken Sheppardson
I'm confused. Do you have to have ADHD in order to excel in bouncing from service to service, or do you have to NOT have ADHD?
- MiniMage TKDteacher of FF
What's the point of this? I mean, isn't what we do here chatting already? I'm confused.
- Admiral Anika
there is no random live chat here. anyone who was on the FFundercats podcast may understand where an IRC channel may come in handy :)
- Rahsheen ™, Coach Rah
That really should be the rule the world over. I know that is a rule on the autobahn. Bass Turds who think "I'm going the speed limit, I'm allowed in the left lane" or "I'm going fast enough for everyone else behind me" make me stabby.
- Matthew DeVries
I wish people would learn to at least yield and pay attention to behind them. ++Mathew DeVries comments.
- rob friedman
My experience driving in Europe is that Europeans are much better about yielding to faster traffic. Many Americans think they own the road.
- Rod Bauer
from twhirl
In the U.S. I'd settle for use of turn signals. TURN SIGNALS PEOPLE! It's that little stick on the left of the steering column. Definitely we should adopt Euro standards on this, as well. We could save tons of wasted money on stop signs if used Dutch right-of-way rules. If you even SEE someone on your right, YOU yield. In U.S. we are too lazy to pay attention, give us a kindergarten sign.
- michael silverton
I think a lot of people are just ignorant of the laws. Every other car is driving with its parking lights on, ILLEGAL, flicking ashes out the window, ILLEGAL, passing on the right, ILLEGAL, failing to yield, ILLEGAL, not yielding to pedestrians, ILLEGAL. I could go on.
- Rod Bauer
from twhirl
Driving Annoyances always a great show-filler for that lamer no-show booking situation. :-)
- michael silverton
I'm just pissed that Leo is driving in France and I'm not. C'est une putain Leo!
- Rod Bauer
from twhirl
Once you get in-town, you can choose whichever lane best suites your destination, though. Unless otherwise posted.
- midnightgolfer
In Pennsylvania the left lanes are for passing only. California's driver's manual says: Drive in the lane with the smoothest flow of traffic. If you can choose among three lanes, pick the middle lane for the smoothest driving. To drive faster, pass, or turn left, use the left lane. When you choose to drive slowly or enter or turn off the road, use the right lane. If there are only two lanes in your direction, pick the right lane for the smoothest driving.
- invariant - farewell FF
Here is British Columbia, Canada it is also true, keep right unless to pass or if you are letting someone merge on to the highway, really straight forward really
- Bryce Campbell
from twhirl
And I get to drive from San Francisco to San Diego tomorrow, bobbing and weaving in hopes of "smoothest driving." Well, I'm not much for bobbing and weaving, personally, but it explains why everyone else drives like maniacs and floods into my Safe Following Distance. What a retarded, utterly ambiguous rule. *sigh*
- michael silverton
Yes, kinda shocked me when I moved out here and read the manual for the first time. But I'd have to say the most broken driving law (aside from speed limits) in California is this: if you're making a right turn from the rightmost lane, you must turn into the rightmost lane. This is unlike a left turn, where you can turn into any lane as long as it is safe. Nobody actually follows that one, and I bet 99% of drivers don't even know about it.
- invariant - farewell FF
In the US some highways are designed with exits on the left side. In that case you have to be on the left lane to be able to take the exit. So leaving the left lane to speeders is not even possible. Also having different speeds of vehicles on the highway is more dangerous than having a steady flow of traffic.
- Baris Seker
In Germany you definitely have different speeds, but the accident rate and death toll is at the lowest in years, less than 5000 traffic deaths in 2008 (on population of 80 mio).
- Nils Sandin
FYI: It varies by state, but passing on the right in the US is only illegal if you use the shoulder to pass. So many people get this confused.
- xero
getting a car license in Germany is closer to getting a pilot's license in the US, that's the main difference. A US driver's license means the driver got a random 20% of the laws correct when asked, most of which were related to identifying the meaning of a sign.
- xero
Postlinearity, that figure is only helpful and relevant if you compare the number of miles/kilometers driven per person per year in the respective countries. Germany is a much MUCH smaller country than the US when it comes to landmass: we might have fewer drivers, but our drivers are likely going much longer distances over the course of a year. Accident statistics should take this into account and report 1 accident per every X miles driven.
- FFing Enigma (aka Tina)
Spent some time in Germany. In a way, I love how most drive in a structured and respectful manner. Then, after arriving home I'm immediately disappointed.
- Shawn Poulson
In Germany you have to get like 20+ hours of private instruction to get your license. It costs a lot of money and the result is people know how to drive. I actually witnessed people parallel parking successfully! Amazing.
- Todd Hoff
For a CD ripper, I used CDex a long time ago. It was light and worked. http://cdexos.sourceforge.net/.... I'm not all that picky these days so I'll just use WMP or iTunes.
- Rodfather
You have to have AT&T specifically unlock the GSM for overseas. US GSM uses a different frequency.
- Eric Rost
does the GSM stand for 'give some more'? as in money? why can't we just make a worldwide standard for phone networks and get it over with. that would help things chill in the world
- Morgan Haley
We'd all be using GSM if not for Qualcomm. Ironically, GSM is more "open" than CDMA, if I understand correctly.
- Victor Ganata
Yes, a US iPhone should work in France. Have the G1 shipped NextDayAir to you? (And, I agree, it is a roaming 'thing' setting via ATT, I believe)
- CLC Radio
Because the iPhone is locked but if you haven't upgraded your firmware to 2.2 yet, you can unlock it and purchase a pre-paid regional SIM card, Leo. :) And the G1 has MAJOR data roaming issues, where the apps connect to the Internet, even when roaming is turned off. :|
- Mona Nomura
My iPhone worked fine in Paris last week but you needed to call At&T first and turn on international roaming.
- Robert Scoble
Make sure you have an international rate plan as well as roaming. I was messed up on one trip by then Cingular
- Greg Flynn
@Victor, CDMA is being phased out, Qualcomm slowly adopting more widespread standards.
- Amit Morson
That is SO expensive - when you roam in lieu of utilizing regional SIM cards. AT&T charges an arm and a leg.
- Mona Nomura
@Amit, but isn't whatever Qualcomm is adopting still not compatible with GSM/EDGE/3G?
- Victor Ganata
Most of the carriers in the world are migrating to LTE (Long term evolution) including both US GSM carriers (AT&T, T-Mo) and Verizon. Sprint is doing its own thing (WiMAX) which is incompatible with either GSM or CDMA (go figure).
- Jan Dawson
@Victor, they are dropping UMB in favor of LTE and moving away from CDMA to support 4G. Obviously they will continue to support past technology, but not develop it further.
- Amit Morson
I guess ultimately, my question is, is everyone going with SIM cards, then?
- Victor Ganata
I want know what's the highest cell phone bill Robert Scoble has ever paid. :o)
- Paul Reynolds
What was AT&T thinking not having international roaming on from the get go?
- Eevee
Glen, ask Louis - I bet he would beg to differ ;-)
- Jesse Stay
Although I don't think Scoble got naked that night - I do know at least one person that was with him that did though, and got locked out of his hotel room! What happens in Vegas...
- Jesse Stay
Actually, I drink Scotch, Wine, and Vodka (only occasionally). But usually I drink Diet Coke.
