Thankfully I don't think I've ever got on the wrong train and I can't sleep on trains anyway.
- Kol Tregaskes
Wrong train once; realised after about three stops and was able to rectify the situation. Fallen asleep coming back from London (Kol, you just need to drink more to do this) but since the end of the line was one stop further than where I wanted to get off it wasn't a big deal either.
- Mark H
Not exactly.. I've woken up at the station *before* mine, convinced that it was my stop and scrambled off the train, only to have that, "Oh, bollocks" moment as the train pulled slowly away from the platform...
- Andrew Terry
That picture is awesome. And yes, I've fallen asleep on the bus several times missing my stop. I've gotten on wrong buses working on auto-pilot, forgetting I needed to take a different line.
- Admiral Anika
I didn't fall asleep and miss my stop, but I did miss my stop because I was talking to someone.
- Nathalie, Dreamer of FF
Oh yeah.In my case I was simply lost in thought and totally missed the stop. Fortunately I got off at the next station and caught the train back. Was only 20 minutes late for my lecture ( but nearly 40 minutes later than i usually get in)
- Roberto Bonini
Distracted by card games, several of us managed to not only miss our stop, we ended up back at the station we started at. Therefore missed our connections (the last of the night), rerouted through another city, and ended up getting home, changing, and going straight to work the next day. Not good.
- Jaclyn
I can sleep on the way in to Grand Central Terminal, because it's the last stop so I can't miss it. On the way home I worry about missing my stop, so I usually don't fall asleep.
- Bill Scherer
I've definitely missed a stop, being sound asleep (long and early commute). The other times that I fell asleep due to too much drink, for some reason, I woke up just in time to get off at my stop. Although that one time, i wasn't looking too pretty with my glasses all askew and drool on my chin as I stumbled off the train. Good times.
- Cassandra
Steven - I fall asleep on trains very very easily. :)

If I forward my normal cell voicemail to GV, can I still listen to my voicemail on my phone, or would I have to go to Google Voice to hear/read it?
- Jandy, ConcertMaven of FF
It can SMS your phone or email you when you get a msg. The email is a transcription AND the actual VM. So if your workflow is mostly to use your phone for checking messages, then it doesn't make much sense to use GV. If you got a new phone number with the GV account it's good to have one number to give out even if you end up changing your home or mobile number that it is linked to....
- Josh Haley
You would have to switch back to your normal VM to hear it I think. Or dial *86? I'm not quite sure. If you switch the VM to GV, all you need to do is call your own number and listen your GV voice mail like you would normally. It's easy to switch. Dial *71 <new number>
- Rodfather
I mostly wanted a number with a local area code to give out when I didn't care to give people my real phone number. Sounds like I should just leave the VM on my real number as it is.
- Jandy, ConcertMaven of FF
Ya might as well leave it. Having a public number to give out is nice. You can choose which phones it will ring. Can block numbers. Set certain contacts to groups and depending on which group a contact is in, ring different numbers..
- Rodfather

really interesting collection of photos. i've been to a few chapels in my life where just the wrong mural or color on the walls just creeped me out

there are tons of these types of storefront churches all over brooklyn, which i believe at some point contained the highest concentration of churches in the entire usa

i believe that. i've walked through the BK a few times and often wondered just how many churches i saw within a 20 block radius.

Yep. No complaints; well I would like to get my 360 running, but no receipt still.
- Michael Fidler
Seriously? That's been awhile, right? Gameless that long would drive me nuts. You should find yourself a good free MMO or something.
- Neal Jansons

It wouldn't be so bad if Windows 7 ran all my new games reliable, but it doesn't. Very inconsistent! Like what. I like RPG's

Anarchy Online Classic is free now, but you have to pay for the expansions. Hmm...
- Neal Jansons
from IM
So I could try it and pay for it if I like it. I don't care about money; scratch that, I do, but not 15 or 20 bucks a month
- Michael Fidler
Well, if you are willing to pay for a MMO, WoW is the way to go, of course. Or EQ2, that got pretty good, but I keep going back to WoW
- Neal Jansons
from IM
WoW is too trendy, not my style. Whats EQ2
- Michael Fidler
I like fantasy D&D type games as long as they're good. So pick one for me.
- Michael Fidler
There is a reason it is popular, but that's cool. I have been playing on and off since beta. My wife and I met in college and courted partially in WoW. EQ2 is Everquest 2
- Neal Jansons
from IM
That's the other reason, everyone has been playing it so long. I don't want to be the new guy.

Graphics are important to me. So that's the one. Pay up front or how does it work?

thing is, as usual with MMOs, there are a few expansions...I played up to Ruins of Kunark, but I don't know the ones after. I liked all the other expansions pretty well...extra races.

I think I'll try it. It has a good history, and Sony is great at MMO's so what do I have to loose.
- Michael Fidler
I had a lot of fun with it, but school and life happened and I just drifted off...oh, and if you ever want to check out an awesome sci-fi MMO, check out Eve Online.

"In most towns, there was some sort of prison, or holding area or place where people were victimized," Shapiro says. "Think about what this means. For anyone who thinks this took place out of sight of the average person, this shatters that mythology. There was one Auschwitz. There was one Treblinka. But there were 20,000 other camps spread through the rest of Europe." Says Shapiro: "What we are seeing in this project is that all of Europe was a camp.""

what a bummer! those guys really made my high-school years when they started playing the Cure, DM, and all the stuff I used to have to go to SF and listen to Live 105 for...
- Bren -- feeling merry
Whoa! You used to live around here? Yeah, KWOD made my high school years as well. I remember they did this funny contest at the Depeche Mode World Violation concert at Cal Expo where one of the DJ's dressed like David Gahan from the "Enjoy the Silence" video and walked around with a chair, and if you caught him when he finally sat down and were the first person to blurt out this lengthy sentence, you won $1000 on the spot. I miss that stuff.
- tinypants - Hagitha of FF
Live 105 is pretty much the only actual "alternative" station we have in the area now. 98 Rock carries some of the same stuff, but it's still in a different vein. Here's the radio station that replaced KWOD: http://90sbuzz.com/ I should point out that right now they're playing Bryan Adams. Someone save me.
- tinypants - Hagitha of FF
Yeah, Bay Area radio has been sucking for the last 10 years or so.
- Alex Scoble
Unfortunately, this pretty much mirrors the problem with radio everywhere. Portland only has one alternative station as well.
- Alex Scoble
Satellite radio/internet radio/ipods... commercial radio just can't really compete anymore.
- Bren -- feeling merry
There was a radio station in Portland that I used to like to tune into when I made my annual trek up to Washington. I don't remember what it was, but I would always find it somehow. Last year I couldn't find it at all. I was bummed as hell. It was kinda alternative...rock alternative whatnot. Hm. Yeah, I knew Bay Area radio was doomed when The Bone 107.7...the best classic rock station in the bay...started considering Puddle of Mudd and Green Day "classic rock". No. I'm dead serious.
- tinypants - Hagitha of FF
Yeah, I knew Bay Area radio was doomed when KSJO went lights out.
- Alex Scoble
Hey! I 100% agree with you. That's the station that really got me into "modern" music, and eventually electronic/techno. First song I ever heard on KWOD in Sacramento was "Baby Got Back"... no fooling. But their best part was the Saturday night mixes. I would record those and listen on cassette all week long. (9th-11th grade era)
- Louis Gray
First song I ever heard on KWOD was by The Cure. *sigh* I have to say...the station they've replaced KWOD with isn't *awful*...they're literally an all-90's-all-the-time station now, which is great because that takes us back to the heyday of KWOD. But it also includes all the hip-hop, r&b, rap, pop, etc. and not just alternative or grund/alt rock. So. Grrrr.
- tinypants - Hagitha of FF
Well, to understand probably why they made this move is to go back in history to the 80's, before KWOD, on the same dial numbers. Back in the 80's it was all modern music and pop. No rock and roll at all.It was almost a mirror of that other famous station down there, I think it was 102.5? But it was more with modern music than that station was, like Depeche Mode, while 102.5 was Madonna. That is why they kept modern music in the 90's and just added more rock and roll and alternative.
- Ken
Actually when I think about it, wasn't it called KWOD even in the 80's? You guys are really lucky, up here where I live in the Sierras, we have 1 single rock and roll station, which is pretty much exactly like 98.5. I still remember when 98.5 was KZAP in the early 80's. Then 93.7 changed to 98.5 in the mid-90's.
- Ken
oh..that's sad. I hate when radio stations disappear. :(
- Anna Lynn M.
Ken - prior to 1991, the radio station technically wasn't KWOD in its current format, which is what is being mourned. Couldn't give two shits about it prior to that period. And the new station isn't doing 80's music, it's doing 90's music. Big difference. Prior to 1991, KWOD played top 40 hits (but was completely unmemorable because KSFM did it better), though when it first acquired the KWOD call letters (named after "quadrophonic sound"), it was originally an adult contemporary/jazz station.
- tinypants - Hagitha of FF
I feel your pain Amanda. For a little while I thought I had lost any good music on the radio when I moved up here. Then I hooked the radio to the town's cable TV system and picked up Sacramento again. But then my favorite station 96.9 The Eagle got overlapped by a local station that is harder rock stuff like 98.5. Plus I think it was messing up my cable TV, so I unhooked it. I could listen to The Eagle on the Internet, but it's just not the same to me.
- Ken
Live 105 isn't all that anymore either. I'll miss KWOD when I visit the parents in Sac, but more and more Sirius's "1st Wave" and "Lithium" fill that void. Oh, 93.7 was KROY in the 80s IIRC and had an AM station too. 102.5 was R&B at that time but had a modern music show. Funny, the only memory of KWOD that comes to me now is listening to "Under the Bridge" in the turn lane from Fruitridge to MLK jr. on my way to school. What is alternative anymore anyway? I hear the Cure and New Order at Nordstrom today.
- Tony Del Porto
Yeah, it's sad that Live 105 is a shadow of its former self. Reminds me of when Alice started going south...they used to play not necessarily an "alt" format of music, but they still stuck to a pretty narrow band of music that paralleled Live 105. And then they started playing crap like Michele Branch and it all went downhill from there. :P I just remember radio being more exciting back...

93.7 was KRXQ in the 80's and most of the 90's.Lots of info here, I didn't know KZAP lasted until the 90's on 98.5.Then it was a country station for a few years, and then KRXQ bought them which is what it is now. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki...
- Ken
Do y'all remember a pop/top 40 station that was in the lower bands in the late 80's/early 90's? I canNOT for the life of me remember what it was...it was 94-something...97-something...I don't even remember the call letters. But it had a similar format to 102.5 at the time (which was also more pop/top 40 than the hip hop station it is today). I remember listening to their top 8 at 8...

I know there was one around the 100 area. It could be the same as 100.5 The Point which was made in 1989 that plays pop and contemporary music I believe. http://www.google.com/search...
- Ken
Nah, that's not it. I'll google around more later. I still have some of my old cassettes from when I recorded songs off the radio back then, so perhaps I have the call letters or at least the frequency somewhere on there. (probably wedged between NKOTB's "Cover Girl" and Depeche Mode's "Personal Jesus")

"here's a scene in David Mitchell's coming-of-age novel, Black Swan Green, which is easy to miss unless – like yours truly – you have spent much of your life fascinated with the work of Ursula K Le Guin. Black Swan Green's 13-year-old protagonist, Jason, wanders into the home of a desiccated but still glamorous aristocrat of the old school who offers to tutor him in poetry. "Tell me," she asks, "Who are your teachers … what are the writers you revere most greatly?" Instead of offering Proust or Rilke, Jason tosses out, "Isaac Asimov. Ursula Le Guin. John Wyndham." (Not exactly what she was looking for.) "But have you read 'Madame Bovary'?" she shouts. "This is your culture, your inheritance, your skeleton! You are ignorant even of Kafka?" I love this scene not only for the way it's drawn, but for what it tells us about its author. It illustrates a journey – from the disreputable world of SF and fantasy to what we still call "literary" work – taken by many readers, including me. More...
