"The valid points posted here represent some of the primary motivations behind releasing the Service Gap data. These Styles data are not intended to uncover the whys behind the Gap, but rather to ignite a conversation that can help us to meet the challenge of reducing the Gap head-on. What makes this challenge particularly interesting is the backdrop of our current President’s commitment to service and the record-breaking participation in the MLK Day of Service in January. The Gap exists, yet the numbers of volunteers on MLK Day illustrate an undercurrent of energy and enthusiasm that if tapped into, could help us bridge it. I agree that there are numerous examples where individuals’ interests don’t match available volunteer opportunities. But, the Styles data also reveal that there are some opportunities where more than one-in-ten adults indicate that they have donated their time in the past 12 months. These are not huge figures, but at the same time, they are not inconsequential. As..."

"Hey Amber- I think a key question is \"how do you scale the program?\" especially given the current economic climate that isn\’t going to allow for ever expanding budgets for monitoring tools, community managers, etc."

"Nice post. Coming from the PR side, I think we need to adjust our perspective on measuring social media. I think there is a lot of focus on finding influencers and gauging their power to distribute messages. For me, social media really represents feedback on our outreach efforts, what IPR would call Outtakes. Thus, what PR should really be looking for is slightly different than traditional media measurement. Instead of counting and weighing the value/influence of a post/tweet/etc., PR should be focused more on changes in tonality of the conversation, frequency of the conversation, quality of message playback (did the audience hear what we were trying to say?), etc. What we're really seeing is raw, unfiltered feedback from our target audience, not an intermediary. Such an approach would account for the effectiveness of both programs to directly reach out in social media but also the influence exerted through more traditional PR programs (media relations, analyst relations, events,..."

Great video Robert - I completely agree, and is the reason I prefer ff over twitter. Would be very helpful if ff could aggregate all related posts in some way to ensure you can get the whole conversation as well. With more information though, we need better filters.

You know, what really gets me is how we've come to call anything that happens "News". It's not. When my friend's cat does something stupid, that's not "news". My reaction to a new cell phone isn't "news".
- Ken Sheppardson
There are, what, 6Bil people on earth right now? Let's say half of them are asleep, half of those that are awake are bent over in a field somewhere or in a factory where they can't hear the person next to them, that leaves, like, 1Bil people making "news" at any given moment. I'd hate to see what your feed looks like, Robert, once they all have iPhones and microblogging accounts.
- Ken Sheppardson
Interesting to note this Twitter post is drawing more conversation than the post exclusive to FF. Also draws in more voices to this thread.
- Kevykev
KevyKev: yeah, that is interesting. Especially since this one doesn't have a graphic associated with it. The FriendFeed-to-Twitter feature is definitely bringing people over to FriendFeed.

Good stuff to start off a Monday morning, Robert. It's really amazing how much good information is being produced today, andI think FriendFeed is helping all of us to filter the inevitable noise around it.
- Jorge Escobar
Even if we can lengthen the conversation, who is doing that? For example how much time do you spend on current topics vs. older?
- Rob McMurtrie
Isn't half-life a personal thing?! depends on how fast you process your feeds. +1 to FF's threads increasing half-life part.
- Shivanand Velmurugan
Shivanand: nope. Conversations aren't controlled by one person and I've been watching this for a while. The amount of time we, as a community, give to any one issue is getting shorter and shorter.

Ya, and war didn't end communism, either. We spent it out of existence.
- Kevin Pedraja
Love this one! On a similar note, one anti-war sticker always drives me nuts is "We are making enemies faster than we can kill them." Umm...don't we have a nuclear arsenal that can destroy the entire planet? Point is: can/can't is different than will/won't. Guess that minor detail got missed by the editor. :)

This is a great post. Press releases used to be enough when we lived in an "old school," mass media world where PR only played a function up until the launch. There are so many more opportunities now AFTER the launch to engage niche audiences that are interested in your product/service, that the press release is becoming more of a starting point than and end point. The purpose of a release is subtlely changing from a tool for the dissemination of information to an excuse to gather information that powers the ongoing conversation and development of other tools (case studies, blog posts, etc.) The reason that most companies and PR people don't engage in this way is FEAR. Because they don't realize that consumers, customers, press, bloggers, etc. crave a dialogue that allows THEM to make intelligent choices, they resort to press releases and other one-way conversations that the company can control. To think that your audience isn't out there looking for a complete picture on your product or service is fo

"Wow, that’s a whole lot of reading, and I guess catch up time I deserve from spending the day working with clients and trying to counter the reality that I’m old, washed up and broken, versus keeping up with the blogs. Seriously, tho, interesting stuff above, lots of great perspectives. My snarky remark is just this: CNET, Wired, DEMO, move on over and welcome us PR folks!!!! B/c, I guess, Michael thinks we are worthless too! Frankly, it’s kind of a nice group we are growing. Michael, no hurt feelings, we will still welcome you to Austin late Sept!"

"As I’m less than 3 weeks away from popping out another kid, and was home single parenting for the night with my 3 year old, I missed the party of the year. Seriously. Mashable, thank you ALL for coming to Austin and giving us such a great reason to get all together. We’ve always adored you guys, particularly Kristen Nicole - props!, and getting to be such a big part of the evening (us PN Texans love nothing more than the front door real-estate to see all the comings and goings) was honestly a lot of fun and appreciated. Thanks for being a catalyst to bring us in the Austin Web 2.0, Interactive, Internet Tech, call it whatever you want, scene together. Want you to know some follow up meets have already happened to make sure we make momentum like this happen more often, and keep it going and growing. Yes, during March and SXSXi, but all year long! We got it going on here and we are going to start being louder about it. It is NOT Valley Envy at all. We are totally apples to the Cali..."
