It's the conversation. Without a dialogue it's just a massive amount of noise.

What is important is who you follow to listen. What happens is people follow you that listen as well. Sometimes it is just follow back but I think that is temporary while we learn. Its like meeting someone for the first time and then deciding whether or not to take it to any next step. Maybe?

I still think it depends why you're on Twitter. Lots of people use it for business, fair enough, I use it for entertainment and to see what's happening around and about, I like a random mix of people, the madder the better in some cases, I find it fascinating, the psychology and pathology of the crowd and the various streams of consciousness. But then that's just me :)
- Nicola Quinn
If I had to answer that question, it's "who." Being followed is great, but the people you follow following you back is most gratifying, because you are interested in what they have to say

Who you follow. I use twitter as a source of information so being followed only tells me that someone finds me interesting. :P

For keeping abreast of the conversation, absolutely who I follow. But if I were a company I'd be more interested in who is following me and why.

Great video Robert - I completely agree, and is the reason I prefer ff over twitter. Would be very helpful if ff could aggregate all related posts in some way to ensure you can get the whole conversation as well. With more information though, we need better filters.
- Alistair (alpinefolk)
You know, what really gets me is how we've come to call anything that happens "News". It's not. When my friend's cat does something stupid, that's not "news". My reaction to a new cell phone isn't "news".
- Ken Sheppardson
There are, what, 6Bil people on earth right now? Let's say half of them are asleep, half of those that are awake are bent over in a field somewhere or in a factory where they can't hear the person next to them, that leaves, like, 1Bil people making "news" at any given moment. I'd hate to see what your feed looks like, Robert, once they all have iPhones and microblogging accounts.
- Ken Sheppardson
Interesting to note this Twitter post is drawing more conversation than the post exclusive to FF. Also draws in more voices to this thread.
- Kevykev
KevyKev: yeah, that is interesting. Especially since this one doesn't have a graphic associated with it. The FriendFeed-to-Twitter feature is definitely bringing people over to FriendFeed.
- Robert Scoble
Good stuff to start off a Monday morning, Robert. It's really amazing how much good information is being produced today, andI think FriendFeed is helping all of us to filter the inevitable noise around it.
- Jorge Escobar
Even if we can lengthen the conversation, who is doing that? For example how much time do you spend on current topics vs. older?
- Rob McMurtrie
Isn't half-life a personal thing?! depends on how fast you process your feeds. +1 to FF's threads increasing half-life part.
- Shivanand Velmurugan
Shivanand: nope. Conversations aren't controlled by one person and I've been watching this for a while. The amount of time we, as a community, give to any one issue is getting shorter and shorter.

"Plug a search term into StateStats and it shows how common that search term is in each state relative to the other 49. StateStats colors the states where a search term is common red -- uncommon, blue. This means that for a universally common term, like "iPhone," there are a lot of purple states. There's a more severe contrast between red states and blue states for a term like "Jerry Yang," whose fate seems to interest only New York and California."

Ya, and war didn't end communism, either. We spent it out of existence.
- Kevin Pedraja
Love this one! On a similar note, one anti-war sticker always drives me nuts is "We are making enemies faster than we can kill them." Umm...don't we have a nuclear arsenal that can destroy the entire planet? Point is: can/can't is different than will/won't. Guess that minor detail got missed by the editor. :)

Thanks for nothing, Web 2.0. With each sexy bit of social media that catches fire with users, lame companies get another fresh opportunity to pretend they know how to connect with customers without understanding what they're doing. No business is abandoning traditional advertising in favor of these gimmicky, halfhearted efforts. They're just abandoning any self-respect they once possessed. Whee!

Liked purely for Robert's comment. It sums up most of my opinion nicely.

Rob: I just copied that from the article, I didn't write it.

Unfortunately, the phenomenon of bad corporate advertising ruining things is hardly isolated to social media.
- Aram Zucker-Scharff
Robert, sounded exactly like you though :)

Many corporations are certainly failing at social media but Web 2.0 is great for consumers. I subscribe via Twitter or install Facebook apps if and only if I'm interested. I can't do that with billboards or the inane 30 second TV advert that gets repeated on every break. Web 2.0 makes me feel empowered.
- Andy Murdoch
I work for a company that I'm trying to convince to adopt "Web 2.0"/Social Media practices. They are all gun ho about it - talking about how they are going to invest money into it, etc etc. I bang my head on the desk every time. It's not about money! It's about actually caring - and they don't yet. I feel like I'm giving dating advice to a friend who just takes girls out to nice restaurants and talks about himself the entire date and then wonders why the girl doesn't return the call. BLURGH!
- George Smith
Hilarious and sadly insightful - this ties very well to the conversation about value of webapps in the real world. My favorite from the article: One of my favorite adventures in dystopia is when the corporate Twitter feeds talk to one another. Just this morning the Wachovia Twitterer responded to the Starbucks Twitterer. Starbucks had said, "It's possible to make a Vivanno with soy, but...

I am hoping that the new United Football League is going to tap into social media as a way to market themselves against the Goliath NFL.

Wanted to comment on the blog post but had to fill out a form and give real or fake personal information. Pain in the butt just to leave a comment. I don't remember the last time I actually read ZDnet to be honest. ROI needs to be measured for all sales and marketing activities not just social media. A good real world example of MROI. What's missing is how many deals were closed though. Leads mean nothing if they don't close.
