You can now get a daily or weekly email digest for anybody's feed on FriendFeed. You'll get a daily or weekly email with the most popular posts from that person's feed. To get the email, click the "Email/IM" link at the top of anyone's feed, and select the "Best of day" or "Best of week" email option.
Thanks to Kevin for doing a great design for what turned out to be a more complex set of UI options than we had originally anticipated, and thanks to Tudor for implementing the email backend.
- Bret Taylor
I now get the FriendFeed Feedback posts as a Best of Day email so it doesn't fill up my feed, but I don't miss feedback. I also set up a "Best of Day" email for my "Technology people" friend list so I get a pretty good overview of tech news every day via email.
- Bret Taylor
This is a really cool idea Bret, I wish you can make that an RSS feed option as well. I'd be much more likely to read summaries in RSS than in email.
- manielse (Mark Nielsen)
Casey: Thanks for the tip. What's the 7 before the "?" mean in the URL? The number of likes or replies needed to be included?
- manielse (Mark Nielsen)
this is killer, the random influx of email during the day was kinda getting fail-ish. I love the daily digest.
- Drew Lucas
Very cool! Any way to get archives of previous months? (especially helpful for those of us who leave the internet for weeks at a time...)
- Mitchell Tsai
Just curious - at what time of the day will we get these emails ? Midnight US-Time, or will it respect our timezones ?
- Ahsan Ali
Ahsan: it is somewhat random right now when the emails are sent, but we built in the backend capability to control what time they are sent, and we plan on exposing that control to users in the future. Right now, it is kind of random - sorry!
- Bret Taylor
But what exactly is "Best"? Is it anything that has a certain number of likes/comments?
- Laura Norvig
@Bret LOL THAT WAS MY PROJECT! I will release it tomorrow. But you've also did it and killed my friendfeed application **sigh** But mine has multi-reporting weekly-daily-monthly at the same time and adjustable entry count!
- Alp
@Bret please consolidate me or I won't code new apps with you api! :-)
- Alp
Alp: we were not trying to withhold data. Later today the documentation will be updated to reflect the ability to obtain "Best of" for users. The feed id will be USERNAME/summary/N (similar to "Best of" for lists)
- Benjamin Golub
Hi Ben, that is pretty funny, I tried that URL earlier today to see if it has been secretly released :)
- Paul Kinlan
Bret: While Twitter struggle to keep their fail whale under control, you guys are developing stuff like this. Amazing - Thanks!
- Jim Connolly
awesome feature, this will be highly useful for my corporate group ideas / content sharing; projects, etc.... THANK YOU :)
- Susan Beebe
Great work. I especially like that it works on lists too.
- Meryn Stol
my inbox might say different, but I like that :-)
- Dobromir Hadzhiev
Wow, this is really neat! And it links into the idea I expressed earlier, re: reducing signup friction / enabling limited guest privileges. Imagine if I could embed one of my FF rooms on my personal web site, and enable people to subscribe to that feed by e-mail with just a couple of clicks... rather than saying "you can get e-mail notifications but you have to sign up for Friendfeed first." "sign up" -- though admirably lightweight on FF -- is still a huge barrier.
- Adam Lasnik
is there a love button cause I dont like this option I LOVE this option..great work guys
- (jeff)isageek
Three options I would like (1) Can I select "top 100" instead of "top 30"? (2) Could I select both "best of day" and "best of week"? (3) How about older timeperiods? I'd love to get an e-mail with stuff from last week or Mar 2009? Start & end dates? Anything to help me read FriendFeed off-line would be great since I spend long periods off-line at festivals (especially during summer time) or overseas. - Awesome job guys!
- Mitchell Tsai
So this works on groups too, cool! But we still cannot see Best of for groups on the site on friends lists. :-( I have several friends lists that include just groups and when I select to view the best of the page it's empty (even though if I got to the individual best of for those groups there are entries there).
- Kol Tregaskes
does anyone know of a web service that can do this? (I'm thinking weekly email updates of my favorite feeds/people) I don't think there's anything like friendfeed ..

Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry's standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in...

So it's since Tuesday huh? The ultimate thread. How will the thread die then? We must have a limit for that, let's say 24h without one comment.
- Zu from AOD
As a side note, I do have to applaud the endurance and pettiness of those of us on FriendFeed. No one on Facebook gave this status update a second look!
- Mike Nayyar
We pride ourselves in our pettiness and obsessiveness. Um, wait.

Remember. It's not whole Scoble likes. It's who likes Scoble.

According to FriendFeed, that's everyone. And some Twitter marketers and SEO experts.

Mike will get in the last word. Eventually. Everyone else is an idiot for playing his little game. Me included. :-)
- Robert Scoble
I'm not actually playing. Or, if I am, I'm playing to lose.
- Akiva
HAHA! You see that? Robert Scoble acknowledges I will eventually win! HAHA! FINALLY! For once in my life, I win! :) :) :) :) Unless Logical shows up...

Only mostly dead. There's a big difference between mostly dead and all dead. Mostly dead is slightly alive. With all dead, well, with all dead there's usually only one thing you can do.

We're testing the limit on the number of comments.
- DGentry
Nah, the FFundercats live chat pushed that one way over the top. We are, however, testing the limits oh how sick people are getting of setting my face.
- Mike Nayyar
This thread has a lot of comments, that must mean Mike is an expert of some kind...or maybe an A-Lister. Must stalk^H^H^H^H^Hinvestigate him...
- Rah-PM 2012
Olympus too? Good thing Logical doesn't know any Japanese mythological figures.

All right, if you're going to play that way, Raijin AND Ajisukitakahikone are BOTH mad at you. And Raijin was especially unhappy because you interrupted his NOMmage of children's bellybuttons.
- Tinfoil 2.0
Dude, my best friend's sister's boyfriend's brother's girlfriend heard from this guy who knows this kid who's going with the girl who saw Raijin put down the platter.

We'd be content, of course, if you (Mike) issued a public retraction of the assertion in your post, followed by allowing someone else to post the last comment in the thread ;-)

You know at some point, expanding this comment will really put a strain on mortal browsers. It already has a 3 second pause to expand it.
- Mark Philpot
I wonder if at some point we will hit a soft limit and FF won't let it keep going. That or they look at this as a great high-bounds test case for the system.
- Sparky, lurking
Great experiment there, I'm somewhat scared opening the thread here. Funny thing, Even the explosion of words spawned through this, making it a wordle madness. http://www.wordle.net/gallery...

- John D Reasor
cant the person that started this block the comments now? and thereby win.
- Morgan
If you can get buddy buddy with mike and figure out his schedule, you can prevent him from stopping the comments because you'll always be able to get the last word in. We must prevail for great justice!
- Jonathan Hardesty
That would be cheating, and he knows it :)

you didn't disable the comments yet? you could comment and then do it and then you really would get the last word. but then again, that's cheating. and cheaters never prosper.

- Jimminy, CoG of FF
It looks like people are solving it, so hopefully I'm not spoiling it: Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right, B, A, Tab, Return. It's a variation of the Konami code (which nets you 30 lives in Contra) adapted for the keyboard. Figured out the first part from Paul's clue, but it took going through the minified Javascript to figure out a) that they didn't use the original Konami code like Google does and b) what they used for keyboard equivalents for "select" and "start."
- Mark Trapp
AWESOME! but didn't the code net you 99 lives?

In Contra it was 30; not sure what it was in other Konami games.

@phil couldn't you do the embed feature... ? post something to posterous.. and then 'edit' the post and paste the embed? Or maybe simply email it?
- Sean
Phil, click on the 'Share' link of the FF entry, then copy the embed code. Create a new Posterous entry, select HTML mode and paste in the embed code. You'll need to edit the width and height (looks like 500 for width). Then post. :-)
- Kol Tregaskes
Don't forget to tag your posts like this ((tag: posterous, friendfeed)) in the subject line of your emails. That way your posts will be seen easier by all other Posterous users when they use the global posterous search.

How do you all add the little twitter and friendfeed images with links to your profiles here on posterous. I don't know the code to do that. :( Help when u can.
- Amani
http://mylescrew.posterous.com/ Right now I'm just testing, the import from Blogger was REALLY easy. I'm trying to "port" BlurbBits (http://ff.im/4tlY2) to make them work better on posterous. The iframe style parameter gets removed, which is different than Blogger (there is *always* something).
- Chris Myles
Amani, the little images for twitter etc you get if you autopost to those sites but you might end up with duplicate posts that way. There is a friendfeed badge you can put in your posterous profile at http://friendfeed.com/embed... use the image format, not javascript.

@koltregaskes, my posterous is at http://alexschleber.posterous.com "Quick Hits Business Mindhacks". Had been using it quite a bit the first 6 months of this year. I'm a big fan of Garry & Sachin, but really wish posterous would hurry up with some of the much needed feature upgrades (skins and/or CSS, Retweet button - just use Tweetmeme, custom sidebar HTML, WYSIWIG bookmarklet, etc.) Seems like they're stalling a bit right now, no?
- Alex Schleber
They have to be careful not to mess with the simplicity of it, though; that's why so many people like it. If they tart it all up, it might as well just be Tumblr. Which already exists.
- NNR

@koltregaskes weird that you're "what's your GReader/Posterous/FB?" entries from the last few days seem to presage in a way what happened today..

Wish the RSS import into FriendFeed worked a little better. Would make Posterous more useful to me.
- Kol Tregaskes
What's wrong with the RSS feed? that's the whole reason I use Posterous, is because the RSS feed import to FF works so well.
- I like big Botts
I've tried a couple today and the images don't come in and the imported text is messy. Works just fine in Google Buzz so if I could work out while my import is messy in FF then it would be a viable option for posting a few articles to both FF and Buzz in one click.
- Kol Tregaskes
what do you have in posterous that you don't have on tumblr? anyway, friendfeed has problems all the time, unfortunately we're losing it :(

Please stop using ISP email (Gmail is free!). I just discovered that one relatively common ISP seems to be blocking some of our emails because they include the url http://groups.google.com/group... (with that removed, the message gets delivered).
Spam filtering is too complex to be left up to random perl scripts or whatever these people use. Several months back, a different ISP was blocking our email because the from address included the word "friend" (as in "friendfeed.com").
- Paul Buchheit
i've noted a similar trend as well. most people on isp email (ahem, comcast & earthlink) have a setting that kickbacks anything that isn't coming from an approved list...and the default msg manages to come off as both retarded and pretentious in a "i need to stock shelves of canned food in preparation for y2k" kind of way. i think earthlink's notice even suggests you to CALL the person you're trying to contact so they can add you to their approved list. very annoying.
- James Miao
Sadly, for most people, using email that isn't provided by their ISP is like using a phone that wasn't provided by the phone company before Carterphone. You're playing with dangerous wiring, and 'who do you call if the bell doesn't ring?'.
- Robin Barooah
Big deal, Gmail is currently blocking yahoo-inc.com addresses. It is a hard problem and no one does it perfectly.
- Sam Pullara
Sam, it's very unlikely that they are blocking all of yahoo-inc.com. Perhaps you did a "Report Spam" on that address previously? (which could cause blocking for your account) Regardless, the fact that nobody is perfect does not excuse those that are awful.
- Paul Buchheit
Maybe it wasn't obvious, but just because an ISP is blocking some email messages with that URL in them it doesn't imply that the spam filter that it has is awful. It probably has just gotten a lot of spam with google groups urls in them.
- Sam Pullara
it is interesting how many people stick with their ISP email service. I guess it is hard to change your email identity especially if you have used the one you already have for long.
- Davide D'Incau
I was just going to post a question about best practices re: startups sending email. I am sending email directly from a server with SPF, domainkeys and DKIM all setup correctly. Yahoo still seems to want to put our emails into spam folders for some users. Any pointers on what to avoid (the emails I am sending are very short and contain only some text, a link and a unsubscribe link)/how to debug?
- Arvind Sundararajan
As far as I can tell, there aren't any great options. Some startups that don't have to send much mail just route it through Google. I think there are also some equivalent paid services, but I don't know how good any of them are. As you recall, even Gmail had trouble getting past broken spam filters sometimes.
- Paul Buchheit
I haven't used ISP mail for the best part of ten years. I've changed ISP three times in that time, so it would have been a pain in the ass and expense to keep telling everyone and reprinting cards etc. It's worth paying for a domain for that reason alone, or, nowadays using reliable spam-free email like Gmail. (I gave up on Hotmail and Yahoo way back).
- Ian May
gmail works great for me. I do not see any spam on it. Only stuff I am expecting to find there.
- Davide D'Incau
For our 20-person company, we've been using Google Apps + IMAP very happily for over a year.
- Jeremy Dunck
Even people in my own relatively tech-savvy family still use @aol and @earthlink addresses. It's not that they don't want to use Gmail or similar upgrade, its that they don't want to give up an address that they've had for 10, 15, 20 years. Weird when compared to a few generations later (kids today), when email addresses are treated as disposable identities. However, comcast and earthlink should just outsource email to someone more ... modern.
- DeWitt Clinton
I find it strange that people use ISP e-mail because they want to keep their e-mail address. My parents have changed their e-mail address at least once when they changed providers. Also, their ISP only offers POP3 access. No IMAP. Of course, of the free e-mail out there, only gmail offers IMAP (that I know of).
- Robert Felty
The only reason I haven't completely chucked my AOL mail is because I want to keep those screen names for IMing since I've had them for forever and a day. Unfortunately some family members only know me by those e-mail addys, so it's been a slow uphill battle to get them to start switching to either my hotmail or gmail accounts. I'll win one of these days...
- Hookuh Tinypants
Oh I don't use the AOL app for anything anymore. I'm all web-based anyway, and I use Digsby for chat. But the problem is that if I cancel my AOL account, they will cancel my screen names. Which means I will have to get all new screen names because they don't release canceled names back into the wild for like six months.
- Hookuh Tinypants
Not sure what you are saying -- that everybody should only use Gmail? There is a whole range of email providers out there -- free, not free, self managed, outsourced with varying degrees of spam management. Gmail is better than most, but still screws up.
- Brian Sullivan
Back when we got our service from Verizon, they not only included a Verizon email address, but also bundled in MSN, including an msn.com (hotmail) account. I haven't checked the former address in years, but use the latter for my IRL personal communications.

I son't see any problem with a FFer promoting a given web service in their posts. Happens all the time in fact. Gmail is free and ISP email usually sucks. If you don't like gmail there are other options and you're free to post about them. And if Paul's talking about the same ISP that I have, they pull this kind of crap all the time.
- Vicarbott
Point taken, but the tangential question is why do you use a google group as your main vehicle for user support?
- Laura Norvig
Laura, I actually just replaced the groups link with a link to the friendfeed-feedback room. My point however is that I should not have to worry about a groups.google.com url or some other random detail causing email to get blocked by some dumb filter. I noticed another ISP that blocks our daily-summary emails whenever they include amazon.com links (from someone's wishlist). FriendFeed is full of links, so these naive filters will always cause problems for our users.
- Paul Buchheit
As an aside, I'm not quite sure that FF is yet profiting from our data. Google certainly is because of the ads, but FF isn't quite there yet...
- FFing Enigma
V, I would bet that Gmail protects your privacy better than your ISP does. That said, I agree that there should be multiple competent email providers. I wish that Gmail would open up their sender reputation data, since that's the most powerful and reliable bit in the spam filtering equation. However, even if they do that, most ISPs will still suck because they don't know better, don't care, and their customers don't realize what's going on.
- Paul Buchheit
Are there really ISPs who don't give end users control over whether to use the ISPs spam filters or not? I have ATT, which uses Yahoo Mail, and I can choose whether to use Yahoo filters or get the raw feed (and I do both, on different accounts). I do wish Gmail would let me POP/IMAP my spam folder, if I so chose, some of my Gmail accounts are obscure enough to never get spam and I don't want to miss anything.
- Tinfoil 2.0
"I would bet that Gmail protects your privacy better than your ISP does". Having worked at an ISP all I have to say is "here here!". People think Gmail is evil because they "read" your email to put some ads on it but don't care if your ISP sends your email through something like an IronPort to detect spam.
- Benjamin Golub
The irony is that those same heavyhanded span filters can't be particularly effective otherwise span would have been rendered cost ineffective by now.
- Robin Barooah
I said the same to mum in email tonight... she uses aol she sent pictures of her and dad on holinday in texas...they never showed..crap... i set up a gmail account for her..hopefully she will use it. :o)
- Rob Sellen :o)
Every time Verizon/Yahoo gets a twich, my Mozilla Thunderbird goes down and cannot access the servers. But my Gmail still works. So I would like to go with GMail, completely, but, would I still be using the Verizon/Yahoo servers? Is GMail available through its own servers? Not completely savvy about this. Chris
- Chris Conner
Well, in defense of that ISP... Even Google doesn't use Google Groups, for some of its products because of the spam presumably.
- Space Cowboy
Thanks - I love watching real time comments - uber cool!
- Susan Beebe
FriendFeed, if done right, could easily replace Tweetdeck
- Susan Beebe
I think the "Like" button could act as a retweet button. It can already push likes to Twitter. It just needs to follow the "stranded" RT format.
- Pat Hawks
Liked is similar, but takes up too many characters and is less known by general public
- Susan Beebe
@Susan that's what I mean. If I "Like" something here, FF should just push it to my Twitter status in the form "RT @whomever [Original message]..."
- Pat Hawks
Seems to me it'd make sense so have *Twitter* entries go back over to Twitter with RT rather than Liked... maybe as an option... but it makes no sense to me to "retweet" stuff that wasn't a "tweet" in the first place.
- Ken Sheppardson
Pat - Exactly! But I also want a "RT" button as I don't always "like" a post... sorry :)
- Susan Beebe
@Ken Right. I think the system could be smart enough to figure out the difference.
- Pat Hawks
It just seems that the "Like" paradigm is quite similar to the RT paradigm on Twitter
- Pat Hawks
Only if its originally a tweet. But then again, you may not want to RT that item. Too many RT's can be spam, sort of.
- Roberto Bonini
Yes, I should have clarified that (I thougtht that was an obvious requirement) - yes RT for items originating from twitter - afterall we're talking re-TWEET right?
- Susan Beebe
"Like" should retweet. I've been saying it for a good long time now, that liking a tweet in FF should do a proper RT rather than the standard "Liked X" that FF pushes to Twitter.
- Chris Charabaruk
Do you think stickys should be limited, e.g. by 1 or 2?
- Kol Tregaskes
as long as there's a facility for atleast 1, I don't mind :)
- vijay
I'm bumping this again. I think this would be really useful. The ability to lock, say, up to 3 posts to the top of the feed would be ideal and to switch off commenting on those posts. Sure you can temporarily do this but switching the room's settings but I'm thinking of a permanent lock. I'd be more interested in the locking of comments on selected posts than the sticky part. :-) #betakoltag-sg-groups

Kol, we should do a "Top 10 FF beta WANTS" meme.

My mom brought 2 scanned pictures for me to check out at lunch today. First one is my grandpa at about 16: he lied about his age to enlist in the Navy right at the end of WWII (to put into perspective, his family were German immigrants and he was persecuted all through school for being German). Apparently grandpa was quite the hottie...
Crazy Tina. Same with my Dad. German-Irish immigrants. Lied about his age and everything. Whassup cuz?
- Mathew A. Koeneker
Grandpa wound up being a cook on a ship and as such couldn't make food in anything resembling normal quantifies. He wound up having 6 kids (my mom is 4 of 6) and would make pancakes on the weekends. He'd ask the kids how many pancakes they could eat and the boys would invariably say 5+. This was a mistake, as Grandpa's pancakes were the size of the 16" cast iron skillet he cooked them in...
- FFing Enigma
Mathew, if you've got family in Michigan or South Dakota, then yeah we could very well be cousins.
- FFing Enigma
I'm totally digging this old picture meme.
- Will Higgins™
I don't actually know, Mathew. He and my grandmother won't talk about a lot of this period of their lives and keep certain things secret that (to the rest of us at least) don't seem very important. My mother only found out a few years ago that the name on Grandpa's birth certificate is Wilhelm and not William (and my grandmother kinda freaked about her seeing that).
- FFing Enigma
My dad was a fire control PO with a penchant for Boxing which got him from the Cruiser Helena to the BS MO then UDT, and China for another of those secret US wars.
- Mathew A. Koeneker
See if you can do some field recording. We have been doing similar with my Dad and grandparents while they were alive. It is good for your family if nothing else.
- Mathew A. Koeneker
Mathew: this is exactly what i was digging at with my recent All Wordy And Junk blog post - document the oral histories of your family and friends before it slips away!
- Joe The Sausage
Dead Silence: I am off to read your blog now. :) It is amazing what experiences the folks around us have had.
- Mathew A. Koeneker
Um..-- Dead Silence -- I made the mistake of thinking that you aggregated your blog here. Have a link for me?
- Mathew A. Koeneker
Odd.. it won't let me comment. It asks for the type the word people test but no place to type the word.
- Mathew A. Koeneker
*sigh* That's the second heads up I've received about the comment area causing issues. Are you using Chrome?
- FFing Enigma
i can comment fine with FF 3.5.2 and yet another person here using the exact same version had an issue crop up with posting a comment. wtf?
- Joe The Sausage
I'm sorry but this is unbelievable:) I'll give credit to the artist upon more convincing proof! The photogenic look of the tiger and lion really helps the artist's case though:)

I'm with Roney... I find this hard to believe... or maybe I'm just jealous that I can't even get stick people right!

I'm really happy everyone liked these. They're my most liked entry to date, Thanks! There also seems to be some question about whether these are actually Pencil Drawings.I can assure you that they are. When I get home, I should have the links. I have more drawings, too.

Thanks Enrique, I'll post some more soon. They are a little more obvious than these ones. As Luke points out; without being able to look closely it's impossible to tell. He's right; but up close it's more obvious. I'll upload the originals to Picasa later, and then you'll be able to zoom in with any photo viewer and see for yourselves. I can't believe how many people liked these. A few people have reposted them already. Thanks!
- Michael Fidler
Absolutely awesome, Michael. You are extremely talented. Everyone should repost these pix and help to make you famous. You should be doing this full time - you obviously have some passion for this. Bravo.
- Chris Loft
These are really beautiful, Michael. Do you sell them?
- Shannon Jiménez
Chris, I would love to say they're mine, but it's not true. I've had them for a while, but I'll find the artists names. It will just require a little backtracking. Besides, they deserve the credit; all I did was find them:-)
- Michael Fidler
Cut the bullshit! :) Photos are very good.
- Burçak Çubukçu
I draw alot in pencil, but they are amazing, the best for me is the girl, that is the most photo-like one. :o)
- Rob Sellen :o)
I agree Rob, the girl is amazing. My favorite by far! Wait until you see it close up! It's really had to tell, even up close!
- Michael Fidler
Burçak Çubukçu If these were photographs, they would be very good. As Pencil Drawings,(which they are), they're amazing.
- Michael Fidler
@Burçak Çubukçu I can't tell if your serious now or just kidding around. I hope your just having fun! If you are serious, I've never given you a reason to question my integrity, nor do I ever intend to. However, the second set is up now, so judge them for yourself, but don't judge me! http://ff.im/1BJh5 BTW, I messed up and reposted the shot of the women again. Oh well. Hope you like them:-)
- Michael Fidler
@Michael: try deviantART, not Picasa, to submit your artworks
- LouCypher
LouCypher, I know it well, but I don't see why I would want to do that. I hope everyone knows by now that they're not mine? I'm sorry, but I can't say it any clearer than that.
- Michael Fidler
nah, i don't believe it is done in pencil. i am sure it is photoshopped :)

I'm finding this both interesting and humorous at the same time. There's a separate message board where this post is being discussed and it has another forty comments on it already. Kol, I can't thank you enough! Kol found another post which helps to prove that these are done in pencil. I had my doubts about a few of them because I collected them from several different sites over time, but the site Kol found has done a great job pulling together an impressive collection of these drawings and more. Take a look - http://www.flickzzz.com/2009...

Actually there are more than what this site shows. There's an entire set with the cats(little cats), which I have, and there's a new portrait set.

Amazing and very very very good.... Very impressive ...

Yeah we know, thanks though, James. :-)
- Kol Tregaskes
Excellent pictures - how long did it take you to scan the photographs into Photoshop and then edit them? The only pencil that has come into contact with these "drawings" is the Photoshop pencil. A tip - stop trying to fool people into thinking you are a "real" artist, because all you are doing is cheapening proper artist's works whom have spent hours creating real pictures as opposed to a few minutes on a graphics editing package.

A bell does ring here. And I am remembering why I was so attracted to the tiger...and the lion for that matter. These are exact replicas of prints I had in our bedroom when I lived in Dallas. I had bought the prints (in color) at a department store,

Actually, I have learned quite a bit about these drawing since I made this post. Not only have I discovered all of the artists, but I've learned more about how they are created. There are many other artists besides the ones featured here who practice...

I'm amazed that people are still posting these photographs of animals and calling them pencil drawings. This is at least the third case I can remember (and there are probably more) of this happening. The myth about them being drawings was debunked long ago. It's also funny that whenever they get posted the person posting them doesn't make it clear that they aren't the artist, exactly as you have done.
- canadianmaple09
@canadianmaple09 I posted these back in March, 2009 when I was beginning to use FF regularly. I ran them through TinEye hoping to find their source, but it returned no results. When I ran through again yesterday, TinEye returned over four pages of results. If I had it to do over again, would I? Yes
- Michael Fidler
The people you refer do don't join "just to slam" someone, they are concerned members of the online art community that want to see real art appreciated and fake art or photos being passed off as drawings revealed for what they really are. Artists such as Brian Duey, Armin Mersmann, Paul Lung, Zindy Nielsen, and many others do not receive the appreciation they deserve because of scams like this.
- canadianmaple09
canadianmaple09, the worthiness of your motives notwithstanding (and they are worthy, definitely) you could definitely have approached Michael completely differently by say, giving him the benefit of the doubt rather than attacking in a highly accusatory tone.
- Chieze Okoye
When you've seen these same pictures posted multiple times by people that just find them on the internet and claim they are pencil drawings, when it has already been established on multiple occasions that they are not, the "benefit of the doubt" approach seems a little too generous. People post these images and claim they're drawings to get views for their own site or blog or page or whatever it is they post it on. It's wrong and it needs to be stopped.
- canadianmaple09
I can understand that, but you should also keep in mind that everyone is not as well-versed in the issue as you are. All I'm saying is that you would probably be more effective in this case if you weren't setting this up as a us-vs.-them, "must destroy with the validity my argument!" attitude when talking to a guy who's been actively having a discussion on the issue in what seems to me (having been around when he first posted the images and the follow up thread and what not) to be good faith.
- Chieze Okoye
Look at his first comment here. People clearly thought he drew them. He doesn't set the record straight. He also claims that they "are actually pencil drawings" and that "I have more drawings too." Later he claims that you need to look at them closer to see they are drawings and that he will "post the originals". Once again, this makes it sound like they are his. This follows the same...

I would probably qualify as an image analysis expert, but there's no way to prove that online. One thing we can do is look at color. Even though the images are black and white, they're actually RGB images, meaning they contain cyan magenta and yellow. If you look at the image of the rhino you have posted then look at the photo of the rhino at the photographer's site you can see they both...

It was a cordless drill and failure was mostly due to the fact that we have a pretty shoddy pepper grinder to begin with. He's fixed it so it's useable again and was quick to let me know I should be happy he didn't try to use the Dremel: nothing like grinding pepper at 10,000 RPMs.

Rob, except that what you do may affect your friends and vice versa. Many people may want to be done with FB, but it's a chicken-and-egg thing... they don't feel they can leave because their friends are still there.

What pains me is now my wife is telling me about her friends sending her warnings that there's a site out there that will show you all kinds of information that Facebook reveals about yourself - the description goes to the extent of saying it will even reveal your credit score. Leo didn't say anything about credit scores and didn't generate any FUD. He's a smart and well-informed person, he knows what he is doing.
- Tinfoil 2.0
Johnny, I like your idea of Leo giving Facebook another chance to convince him - have either someone who works at Facebook, or someone who is intimately involved with Facebook on the show to debate Jason's case and go off all the facts, not just Jason's name calling and very biased and flagrant opinions.
- Jesse Stay
For a real journalist like Leo he should be showing all sides of the story - I think higher of Leo than I do someone like Jason or even Matt Cutts because of this.
- Jesse Stay
BTW, Jason Calacanis still has both his personal Facebook account and 23,000 like Fan Page. He isn't even practicing what he's preaching, even if it does make sense.
- Jesse Stay
Matt Cutts still has a 1,500 like Fan Page. I'd like to see him delete that as well if he really cares. (he won't, because he's seeing results from it - neither will Jason)
- Jesse Stay
Looking at it, I'm not sure Matt owns the Page, so hard to tell on that one, but Jason's is Jason's.

My non-techie friends don't even know who Leo, Jason or Matt are. We are the influencers of these smaller circles, even the word Scoble has no meaning to them. I know that's shocking but influence goes in layers. Of course ripples of information can transform or start as FUD in that process.
- manielse (Mark Nielsen)
+1 Jason williams... just as i said above, jason is a prick... a hypocrite...
- Rob Sellen :o)
Jason Williams, what's the deal with Mahalo that bugs you? I don't get how you're making the connection between his opinions on privacy at facebook and Mahalo. Care to explain?
- Chris Heath
Jason, did you read Matt's response to the mahalo questions in the comments? Did you see the seobook.com guy (aaron wall) comment later on? and did you then read Jason's response to aaron? and also did you notice that aaron did not respond to jason?
- Chris Heath
the smackdown site has more of a point with the multiple geo targeted pages (that's a bit slimy if you ask me, but seo IS a game and in practice it's okay to do anything you can get away with)
- Chris Heath
The point is that Mahalo used scraped pages to increase pagerank and those pages were spam. Doesn't seem very ethical to me. Now they just create multiple urls with the same content to achieve the same thing. Bottom line is that Jason is doing nothing but schilling for dollars with no real value whatsoever. I stand by my opinion that Jason is just as unethical as he tried to paint Mark, if not more. Those who live in glass houses...

Like the idea of having a share link too... one that you could use to share across all filtered list... like when you subscribe... thats would be a neat idea... you could even have it so you choose the list you want to share it with ;o) keep the like..as is, as its on each list seperate. :o) blimey...who am I to give opinions...lol.. been here a week.. but thought it was worth saying... tell me to shut if not lol. :o)
- Rob Sellen :o)
rob you may talk as much as you like - just look at scoble, he invades every thread and they haven't kicked him off yet!
- Allen Stern
In some ways when you press like you are sharing because you bubbling up the post, on the other hand when you have liked you can reshare the entry so indirectly you are also liking it but putting it a place i.e a room where others could share and hopefully enjoy/find of relevant interest in the future.
- Jason
Allen..scoble is like that everywhere tho... :o)
- Rob Sellen :o)
I think we need: Like, Share, Dislike, Run away from, Laugh, Smile, Cry, Get Angry, etc. And it shows up as "Chacha102 ran away from this." "Chacha102 got angry from this." "Chacha102 smiled from this." etc
- Tyler (Chacha)
"In the English language, the word like has a very flexible range of uses. It can be used as a noun, verb, adverb, adjective, preposition, particle, conjunction, hedge, interjection, and quotative"... it'll do :)
- Johnny
and add a "dislike" or something. Sometimes people post stuff I think is important, but I don't "like" the content (e.g. Mumbai attack, etc)
- Dave Hodson
Gotta be careful of overkill tho eh... :o)
- Rob Sellen :o)
i think adding share and some other options to click would be a nice addition
- (jeff)isageek
I already said it here: http://friendfeed.com/e... but basically, make an additional option of "Flag". All "Likes" would be "Flags", but not all "Flags" would be "Likes".”
- Micah
Any change in the options would change the UI I'm used to, but I guess they could put stuff under More.
- Rah-PM 2012
I've thought a fair bit about the terms of "like" vs "share". There are pros and cons of each. However, when there is some bad news of some sort its very hard to click "like" when you really just want to share it because it's important... as Dave Hodson said.
- Jesse Spaulding
I wish when I "shared" in Google Reader it "liked" the original article in FriendFeed.
- Jesse Stay
I prefer "bump" and "mark", personally... for stuff I wanna pull back to the top for whatever reason, and then totally separate bookmarking, either public or private.
- abacab
I like Like. When I Like something it's not always to share, it's so it shows up in my LIkes/ Comments page so I can read it later. Leave it alone!
- Nicola Quinn
I want more than just like. Just a few more, like 'i sympathize' or 'interesting' or 'user defined.' Like lists, i want to put FF entries into lists instead of users. Yeah you could reshare into private rooms but then you lose conversation and possibly more related links. I'd pay $20 a year for that and an app like Thunderbird with tons of filter abilities.
- sergiooo
I'm happy that its' called 'Like,' I'm "liking" the article not "sharing" the article, the original OP is sharing it. If you want to share it then there is a 'resahre' option for this. I don't agree with having dislike added, let's try and be positive with things instead of adding negatively to a great community here. You would only get people question why you dislike it and cause arguments, I'm not here for this.
- Kol Tregaskes
Besides if you dislike something, then 'hide' it.

Twitter is the Grand Central Trainstation.... I wanna know what Friendfeed is?
- Peter Efland
Twitter is a cross between speed-dating and public speaking. You talk at a lot of people but you only get a minute to say what's on your mind... and you may not hear if someone responds... Or it may be an event no one attends and you're just in a room talking to yourself.
- Lindsay
Twitter is public shouting, but the thing is people do listen to that shoutin
- Varun Mahajan
Plant a seed in Twitter - watch it grow in FriendFeed.
- Chris Loft
Peter, FriendFeed is an elementary school playground.
- Anika
Friendfeed is more like ham radio than twitter is, IMO
- Kevin L
"online post-it notes" I like that one Susan

Twitter is the graffiti on the bathroom wall.

But Paula, you must remember this is where the words of the prophets are written if Paul Simon is to be believed.

Down came the Good Fairy, and she said: Liittle Bunneh Steven, I don't want to see you, scoopin' up the field mice and boppin' 'em on the head.
- Katy S
I have that exact same problem, except it's a stray cat instead of a koala. Do koala's pee all over the place to mark their territory too?
- FFing Enigma
You actually have a Koala, in your yard? ... Paul Hogan is no longer the archetypical Australian in my mind. You are.
- DGentry
The calling just stopped... Which is a good thing... Except it meas I have about 10 minutes to fall asleep or get to listen to koala fucking for the next 30 minutes
- Johnny
from iPhone
so do you love the Koala, or are they akin to the raccoon for us? (a nuisance creature)
- Jason (not an Argonaut)
DGentry. We have about 2 1/2 acres near one of the capital cities (Brisbane). We have Bruce and about 5 of his girls plus it isn't unusual to see a kangaroo out the front yard in the morning as I leave for work
- Johnny

I like seeing the raccoons around here. They're nicer looking than the possums.
- Sue - Friendfeed is best
We have an 'understanding' after Bruce and I's 'encounter'... Those buggers are dangerous when they're horny

I've been to Brisbane, believe it or not. I spent a week in Tasmania, roughly twenty five years ago. I'm sure its changed significantly since then, it was just a moderate size city back then.

And now I'm paying for this. Somehow, my computers always try to get even with me on Thursday for working with that floozy PC at work all week.
